I could not be more pleased with the kind service provided at Trattoria Sorrento. I recently brought in a large group of about 20 people, and admittedly had my concerns as to how the restaurant would handle our party. My concerns Everything was laid out and prepared upon our arrival, the waitstaff was kind, knowledgeable, and patient, and the food was fantastic! The atmosphere is lovely and relaxing with wonderful decor that makes you feel as though you've stepped into southern Italy. Every single member of my group had nothing but the most complimentary of remarks regarding every aspect of the meal. I cannot recommend this fantastic restaurant enough! If you are in Bethesda, be it for work or if you live there, you must pay a visit to Trattoria Sorrento!

I pretty much love all Italian food, and this restaurant did not disappoint. They have an extensive menu, the kind that makes it REALLY hard for you to decide what you want to order. I got an eggplant-ricotta dish that was delicious! And of course I HAD to get a cannoli for dessert, and it was exactly how a cannoli should be: crispy outside, perfect cream on the inside. I will definitely be coming back!

I'm a bit biased. I love authentic Italian food. This is real southern Italian cuisine. The decor is really typical Italian, as is the ambiance. It's like being in someone's kitchen. The wait staff here is amazing and is really good about giving you good service. The food is delicious. I recently had the veal with capers and a lemon-wine sauce. It was tender and light. Even though I was totally stuffed, I could have easily eaten more. I've known the family who owns the restaurant for quite some time, and I can say that the food here is like going to their home for dinner. It's made with love. I don't often go out for Italian food, nor do I frequent Bethesda very often, but when in the mood/area, this hits the spot.

Food Poisoning. enough said. We went here for my friend's birthday. I had never been before. I felt like our server ran the bill up for us. He would catch the birthday girl mid conversation or on her way to the bathroom and say "do you want the appetizer sampler?" but failed to explain how much food or money it was. he also did this with the desserts saying a desert platter, which for a group of 12 sounded nice. he brought out 2 with no mention that they were $35 each! and no one wanted them! Past just that I got sick all through the night from the food! Cute place but that was about the best part.

Great service, ample parking, but very average food. My pasta was overlooked and the sauce was just okay.

Family owned, careful preparation of food- with eye towards pleasing diner. Wonderful pasta made in house, tender veal and great fish dishes. Food served hot and always pleasing to the eye. A place we return to time & again and always bring friends to enjoy with us.

Unfortunately our experience was just a-okay. We ordered some clams to begin which were a bit too salty for our taste. Seafood risotto and Ravioli were delicious but nothing too special. The decor is super cute in the inside though so def recommend for a date night. But as for food, nothing so special.

I really enjoyed the capellini al granchio puttanesca. It was quite flavorful and the crab meat was very good. I also love the homey atmosphere and the Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, etc. songs that they play. The tiramisu was interesting.. not bad but not great and really different from most other versions of the cake. I don't think it was moist enough. The servers were also friendly. I would love to come back and try the chicken marsala!

The food was good. However, they need to work on their service. We had to wait quite a while to be waited on despite the fact that they were not busy. A compensation on at least one our drinks would have been appropriate.

Love this restaurant. I've been going here for years and have gotten to know the Italian family that runs the restaurant. They are very sweet authentic mom and pop restaurant, and their children work as the servers. This restaurant is good for a traditional Italian meal- I have no had one dish here that I did not enjoy Recently, I attended their opera night with my family and was presently surprised (considering I don't have a particular affinity for opera). The opera singers were very lively, the prefix for 4 courses for 60$ was delicious! Started with shrimp bisque, second course was gnocchi in a tomato sauce, third was salmon or meat, and the fourth was tiramisu. I loved this night and everyone at the restaurant was having a blast. Truly a perfect dinner and a show! They do opera night one Sunday every month! If you like opera, you would love this!

This place is an absolute disaster. Saying the service is terrible just doesn't cover it, so I'll go through it in detail. We arrived less than 5 minutes after our reservation, which did not appear to be a problem at first. The hostess sat us at a clean table that did not yet have plates or silverware, but said she would bring them. We waited for our server. Over 10 minutes later, a busboy finally brought the plates, silverware, and ice water. After placing my date's silverware, the busboy dropped mine in the middle of the table and walked away, apparently exasperated that my left arm was on the table while he was trying to place silverware. Where are my manners? Disturbed but not yet ready to abandon our dinner, we waited about 5 more minutes for bread to arrive; still no server. Our server finally arrived between 20 and 25 minutes after we were seated. We ordered a bottle of wine. We gave her our IDs. She left with them. After about 5 minutes, my date spotted her serving a large party. Our IDs and wine were missing in action. A few minutes later, the hostess returned with our IDs and asked a second time what we would like to drink. About 5 minutes later, a full 30 minutes in, we still had not received drinks. We still had not ordered an appetizer. We decided we had had enough and walked out. Luckily, our night was saved by another Italian restaurant across the street (La Panetteria), which was the complete opposite of this dumpster fire. The food at Trattoria Sorrento could be phenomenal, but I will never know. No guest should ever have to endure such horrendous service.

We are regulars at Sorrento, loving the delicious dishes this family run restaurant consistently serves. One thing about being a regular is you have the opportunity to work through the menu! Beyond the daily specials -- order the fileted bronzino served simply with olive oil and garlic when they have it -- we love the fresh pastas with the cavatelli with crab meat becoming a recent favorite. Food is always served in a no-nonsense way that makes you feel like you're part of the family.

We've now been to this restaurant 3 times, once with 2 kids, and twice by ourselves. We have used restaurant.com certificates each time, which makes it quite affordable. The good -- endearing family, including grandmother who cooks, runs the place. Decor is a bit dated, but perfect for less formal meal. Some of the food is superb. I loved my beet & gorgonzola salad, and will go back anytime for the cheese tortellini or gnocchi in creamy tomato sauce (pretty rich, but delish). I tried the calamari fritti appetizer and found the seafood high quality. My husband loved his Branzini filet, and he & teenager have enjoyed the Chicken Marsala. The bad -- the pizza isn't wonderful, and the bread is poor quality and often completely stale whereas good bread is great with pasta/sauce. Desserts are good but not stellar. Tiramisu was a bit dry/off (it might have been a bit past its prime), but they cheerfully replaced it with an Italian cream cake which was super fresh & moist. We haven't ordered wine but it looks affordably priced. I feel the hostess/owner is a lovely woman who got to know us very quickly (it helped that we've gone on weeknights -- I can well imagine they get overwhelmed on busy weekends as mentioned in many reviews).

I should've heeded the reviews. The service was way below par. The waitress kept apologizing for all her mistakes and the terrible slow service, but nothing was comped and to add insult to injury they charged us for an extra entrée. When we ordered three coffees and one hot water, they charged us for the hot water. I would not go back here again. They're too many other good Italian restaurants.

I thought this place was just ok. I'm kind of a snob when it comes to bread at Italian restaurants. The bread was kind of hard and they just gave us those plain tabs of wrapped butter. I prefer the soft warm ciabatta bread with olive oil and spices for dipping. I ordered angel hair with shrimp and crab in Alfredo sauce. I didn't think the dish had that much flavor at all. Our server was nice but she seemed a little distracted by one other table that she seemed to know. At the end another server had to take our check because he noticed it was sitting there for so long. I've had much better Italian food.

Came here two months ago and had an enjoyable dinner. The calamari was quite good, and the entrees were delicious. I ordered the Capellini Cardinale, which has a light tomato cream sauce with crab meat and shrimp. The sauce was super tasty, and it tasted great as leftovers too! My friend got the Gnocchi Al Pomodoro. As other reviewers noted, the gnocchi was really light- unexpected but so good! Overall, the dining experience was good. Most of the staffers were friendly, but our waitress was seriously slacking. Everything was fine until we wanted our check, which took her over 40 minutes. There was a line out the door, so it didn't make sense to us why they didn't try and get us out the door quickly. The table next to me waited over 20 minutes just to be greeted. They need to hire another waiter/waitress or replace her with a more competent one. Despite the waitress, I would definitely consider coming back here again.

Yelpers...I came here last night upon the reviews I read. And, this place did not disappoint. The service was great and the food was wonderful. I had the daily specials. I started off with a seafood (shrimp and crabmeat) bisque soup. It wasn't the typical American style bisque with heavy cream. It was tomato based but didn't taste tomatoey...thank goodness, as I'm not a huge fan of tomato flavor. It was simply delish with a lot of seafood. For my entree, I had the Osso Bocca with homemade pasta and a medley of fresh vegetables. The braised meat was divine and the pasta was so tender. I'm not a fan of cooked carrots but the medley of vegetables were seasoned just right. I loved every bite that I could eat. They do not skimp on portions. I had to take some home. My friend had stuff spinach and cheese homemade ravioli with a marinara sauce. It was delish too. We both had dessert. I had the tiramisu and the espresso in it was too bitter for me, and the waitress noticed I didn't eat my dessert and she took it off the bill. My friend had the cannoli and said it was a bit sweet. I also had an Italian martini...I drank it but it was too sweet too. I will definitely be back!

Trattoria Sorrento is simply the best Italian Food in the area. (I am surprised by any rating that suggests otherwise.) Everything on the menu is delicious and the ambiance and service are wonderful. The folks at this family owned restaurant are warm and welcoming - hospitality in its truest sense. Favorites include the bread :), the salads, the pasta with calamari, the chicken paillardine and the bronzino. The homemade pastas are wonderful. The true test of our local favorite came this past June when we hosted a dinner for 55 out of town family members visiting for a special occasion. With tight parameters (we needed to be done by a certain time and come in at a certain price point) the dinner was truly spectacular. Family style plates of appetizers (including excellent white pizza), a pasta course, and a choice of salmon or chicken and then family style desserts - accompanied by carafes of house wine - wowed everyone, including the most jaded New Yorkers. A true gem that we don't get to nearly enough.

We're officially becoming regulars. Had the gnocchi and lasagna tonight and both were incredibly hard to stop eating once again. The gnocchi was light, which is something I had never experienced before, and it was delicious. I don't think the leftovers will last till the morning. Our server, Miranda, was perfectly attentive and obviously invested, granted the fact that we were the only table there at 9:30 pm on a Saturday night. She even asked us our names before we left which have never happened at any restaurant before, but it was much appreciated. Would have definitely been a 5 star night had it not been for the fruit flies that were bugging us during our meal. However, we can't wait to return and give Trattoria Sorrento many more chances! Amazing meal!

Finally a restaurant where you actually can have a conversation without shouting. The services is friendly and attentive, there is no rushing you from one course to the next. The price for a bottle of wine is very reasonable. The food is nice and home style Italien but with a smaller portions, just right for someone with a normal appetite. Overall a nice experience.

I'm just going to throw this out there - I'm really picky about my white sauce. It is just hard to get it right without being overwhelmingly cheesy or creamy. You need to have just the right "cut" to it for me to be able to finish a whole plate and this place does it right. I ventured into Trattoria Sorrento a few months ago with a friend, we were just exploring and finding new restaurants to try. The place is nice, dimly lit, and cozy. I have never seen a big happening crowd at this place, reservations were never necessary. I ordered this dish with fettuccine, prosciutto, peas, mushrooms and white sauce and I was practically licking my plate clean. Instantly I was trapped into having a favorite at a restaurant that calls my name and prevents me from venturing out to try other dishes at the place. Since my discovery I have taken the boy toy here a few times, he ventures out for me and he proves me right. No other dish quite compares to my discovery. As a side note I also learned that the owner's are from a FOB Italian family who takes pride in their food, invites any feedback. It seems like they never take a day off, always preparing and prepping food every day to serve you dinner. Gotta admire that dedication :-)

Ate here for Dad's Day celebration. Just as Maya B. described. Cozy atmosphere inside. Only issue was the Calamari being bland. I assume someone forgot the seasoning on the breading or they heavily rely on the marinara sauce to compensate. Ordered the Hangar Steak (Special of the day), Chix Parmigiana, Lasagna and Cheese pizza and portioning is easily good for two. Fyi, not a big fan of carbonated lemonade. A bit on the pricey end but good to have a cert from Restaurant.com . A good option but with so many choices in Bethesda it can be reserved for special occasions.

We walk into Trattoria Sorrento, which looks like a tiny hole in the wall place and is competing with several other Italian spots on the same block, and it is surprisingly large and vibrant (and quite packed--good thing we had reservations!). We're seated at a table quite close to another couple, but the place doesn't feel crowded--it's rather cozy. The waiter pops over and--somewhat brusk--asks to take our drink order. We go for the carafe of the house pinot grigio--I suggest doing the carafe of house wine as it's a good deal and you end up with about 8 good-sized glasses. We eventually decide on several plates: Smoked salmon with greens and capers (love it!) Mussels in white wine and butter (the mussels are tasty but REALLY small) Swordfish with veggies and pasta (very large piece of well-cooked fish) Frutti di Mare pasta with scallops, shrimp, & calamari (kept finding shrimp and scallops under the pasta + whole baby calamari!) Angel hair pasta with shrimp and crab (a heavy, feel-good dish) For dessert, some sort of caramel flan (a bit heavy on the egginess). Overall the place is a pricey yet affordable, fancy yet homey (I mean they do have valet and white linens) Italian spot that is worth checking out.

I know, I know, another Italian restaurant in Bethesda. However, the food at this place is spot-on and really tastes home made and comforting. The wine list is a little sub-par, but the food menu is simple and none of the items have overwhelming ingredients. I ordered the whole wheat parpadelle (think thin and long lasagna noodles) in a mushroom cream sauce. It came out looking fantastic and tasted even better. I was worried the cream sauce would be heavy, but it was light and very tasty! My wife ordered the spinach ravioli in their homemade red sauce which was outstanding as well. You could tell that the chef made sure there was just enough green in the filling and it mixed perfectly with the soft cheese inside. The melted mozzarella on top was a big hit as well. Our meal with us each having a glass of wine came out to around $47.00, so that is definitely a good deal for a nice meal in Bethesda. The only drawback to this place is the ambiance. I think it would be wise to ditch some of the clutter, update the walls with some deep colors etc... I don't think we dug the cheesy Italian music that was playing either, maybe they find some happy medium between classical and Sinatra?

I have to disagree with the other reviews on here. I went here recently with a group of friends after we decided the wait was too long at MIa's, next door. Overall it has a nice atmosphere inside but it's a bit much decor with the large mural plus all the Italian framed posters and other tchochkes. The waiters were attentive and efficient. But the food was meh. I got a pasta with marinara, and the red sauce was very oily - the kind that gives you heartburn about an hour after you eat it. The bread looks like it came from a grocery store bag, and unlike most Italian restaurants, if you like olive oil you'll have to ask for it. The entrees are fairly expensive for what you end up getting taste-wise.

I give it a B- overall. The food was tasty, although it was quite cramped (think each table knows each other's bid-ness). Bread on the table was bland, and the service was so-so. Food is always really good here. I mean excellent! The wine list, although is extremely lazy. they either do not have the wine on the list, or they have jacked up the price, and won't back down to make amends by giving you the same price listed. it is not hard to print a new list out,and pass it around. My overall experience was good, though I won't be back for a long time. Pet Peev = False advertisment

If you grew up in the Northeast, this place will remind you of your neighborhood Italian place -- it has the same cozy decor and hearty (though ordinary) dishes. Nothing exceptional on the menu: a good range of pastas and a handful of traditional meat and seafood dishes. A few of the pastas are handmade -- gnocchi, lasagna, ravioli -- and they taste quite fresh. But nothing extraordinary. Wine list looked decent, though I didn't try anything, and they have a few bottled beers. The service is warm and helpful, and the restaurant is pretty big, so getting a table shouldn't be a challenge. The clientele tends to be older; I wouldn't take a date here if you're under, say, 35. But it seems like a nice place to take your kids, or to go with your family (as I did).

This is too great of a restaurant to not have any reviews for. I love Trattoria Sorrento! The food is great and the service is commendable. The atmosphere is ambient and quite romantic. Most people who patron Trattoria Sorrento are families and older folks. The first time I was taken to this restaurant I was wearing sweatpants and a hoodie. I felt so out of place with most customers being the older and more affluent crowd. The busman and waiters helped me to feel more comfortable being so well mannered and cordial despite my friend's and my attire. The veal pasta that I ordered was so flavorful and the meat so tender and juicy that I didn't want to finish it off. I wanted to save it and savor it more later. The chicken and portebello dish my friend had was great too. The veggies were all cooked just right and had great texture. Honestly, I think this was the best Italian food I'd ever had.

I have been to Sorrento's half a dozen times and have consistently enjoyed a tasty meal in a comfortable setting. The food is moderately priced, delicious, and everyone always has a great time. My husband and I enjoyed a delicious chicken with marinara, spaghetti and vegetables and we both loved it. The grilled calamari appetizer was enjoyed by all and the desserts were delicious (tiramisu and tartufo) and with generous portions. Definitely recommend.

Amazingly, last night was the first time I had been here, and I will be going back. The first Sunday of the month they have a special Opera night, with a 4 course menu, and although our reservations were for the regular seating and menu, we could see and hear the opera singers in the adjacent area, which was lovely. The diners were singing along and seemed to be having a great time. My 20 year old daughter and my 69 year old father both enjoyed it as well- just keep in mind if you come on Opera night, it is hard to have dinner conversation. We shared the Antipasto, loaded with excellent meats and cheese, perfectly roasted red peppers, artichokes and pitted olives ( a nice touch, in so many places you have to akwardly spit out the pit...) on a bed of baby greens, a refreshing change from so many places chunks of iceburg bleh. Dad ordered the crab bisque, but we shared that too-and wished we had ordered our own. It was fantastic. My daughter's Capellini Cardinale was chocked full of crab and big shrimp, in a tasty tomato sauce. Dad's veal saltimbocca was "just how I like it" and I had the lamb- a special, that was a rack of baby lamb, cut in chops, with a mushroom gravy, steamed veggies and the best mashed potatoes I have ever had- really. Who would have thought? Laced with nutmeg, the potatoes complimented the perfectly cooked lamb and still crisp veggies. Well worth the higher than I normally spend 29 bucks-it was one of the best meals I've had in Bethesda. Although very busy, the service was fabulous and efficient. Next month, I'll be making reservations for the Opera seating.

Best Italian restaurant in the area. Nothing gets more authentic than eating the food, and sitting in this realm, while you eat, than this establishment. After traveling to Italy, and coming home, going here made me feel like I never left Europe. Thumbs up across the board.

I can assure you that Bethesda has plenty of Italian eateries to go around. If you want upscale decor and white linen, pick another one. Don't be fooled by the laid back atmosphere or lack of ornate decor, because the food here is top notch. There is definitely a home cooking feel to this place, and I'll take that over 30 dollar chicken parmesan any day. We started with the grilled calamari, and this is a must try. I have never had calamari grilled but it was flavorful and tender with a great wood smoked taste. For an entree, I picked a grilled veal dish which was juicy and full of taste. They have at least 5 ways to get your chicken and veal prepared which is a nice departure from the usual scallopini, parmesan, and marsala. The service is top notch and the bread they rush to your table is a treat as well.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
