I was pleasantly surprised with my experience at Sock Hop. The service was fast enough (I was their only customer at the time, though) and the carhop who took my order answered all of my questions with ease. My Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich was incredibly delicious despite not having any mayo and only one thin slice of tomato. The only food complaint I would have was that my fries had cooled off quite a bit by the time I got my food home, but I don't know that that is their fault.

The drive-in burger place is a part of 50's nostalgia that is surprisingly under-represented in Wichita, reserved only for Sonics and buildings that used to be Sonics, but the appeal of Sock Hop otherwise stops there. Despite being open for eight months, the restaurant was having their "grand opening" the day prior to my visit; everyone was probably all drive-in'd out after it, because I was the only place in there for Sunday lunch. I ordered a burger, fries, and vanilla shake, and watched the kitchen spin into action. Well, maybe more like slowly reanimate themselves out of paralysis - they looked pretty bored. My enthusiasm received a little bit of an uptick when I saw the 5-gallon jug in which the potatoes were sitting, but alas, the thin fries succumbed to the same limp, greasy profile that dominates this city. No such enthusiasm was warranted for the burger, a drab overcooked sandwich with too much leaf lettuce haphazardly piled on the bakery bun, which wasn't toasted and began to turn to mush upon meeting whatever grease was left in the burger, along with residual pickle juice. Even the shake was botched - it was significantly more milk than ice cream, to the point where I'm not sure the kid didn't just mishear my request and poured me a large cup of whole milk. Grand opening or eight month anniversary, the building, staff, and food didn't really give much of an impression that anyone was putting much effort into this.

Visited around 2:00p.m. or so on Saturday, October 20th 2012. This place is using the building that used to be a Sonic in South Derby. Decided to dine inside since that's my preference and I was curious to see the layout. This place is supposed to be a 50's style drive-in but despite the fact that this facility just (re)opened the decor/upkeep of the interior is really lacking. Before they opened maybe they should have at least painted over the crumbling baseboards, dirty walls, etc. Can't really tell about the food though because despite the fact that we were there for over 40 minutes we never got any. The waitstaff were totally disorganized and it became apparent that we were placed on a low service priority (presumably because we were inside?) Anyway, we just got up and I asked to pay for the drinks and forget the rest. The waitstaff continued to fumble around for another five minutes in the process of actually charging me the $4.00 or so for the drinks after this debacle. Completely ridiculous, there are perfectly acceptable alternatives in and around town where you won't be treated like this.

Just ate there today 11/02/2012. I love to support local businesses. The car hop came to my car to place my order. She was not friendly at all. I ordered my meal of kids chicken strips and Swiss mushroom burger with a chocolate shake. She came back just a few minutes later and said they were out of chicken strips. I found that crazy since it is Friday. Tells me they have not planned for the weekend. I told her just make it an order of fries since my son is picky I knew he wouldn't eat anything else. As I waited for my order I could see they were making my shake. They were using the really cheap ice cream that come in the plastic tubs. I frowned as I saw this since this is supposed to be a burger and shake place and that it cost me $2.89 before tax. I got my ordered and drove home to eat. The fries were soaked in oil making them extremely soggy. My hamburger was not any better. Had no flavor due to lack of seasoning. I will not be visiting again. Our lunch of hamburger, shake and order of fries was almost $12.00. I could have had a better meal else were for that price.
