If I could give less than 1 star I would. We waited like 30 minutes and was told we had to take a flashy thing. Some white couple walks in and takes a table in the bar. We were told we had to wait for those as well and they just sashay right on in and took it. They didn't say one word. I did and they were to worried about other things. Making out like I was he bad guy. I am assuming because my husband is black! The other patron who were waiting were appalled! I have never been so humiliated in my life. I promise from now on I will be going to jalepenos right down the street to the left. The food is better and cheaper! The staff actually speaks some English. They will never get another dime of mine! The other people left with bus and went to tgifridays. And it was delicious!

Went there last week with my family and service and food was awesome. There were 8 of us so we got quite a sampling of the menu. All left satisfied...will definitely be back when I go to visit the family.

Not sure why the good reviews or why it is crowded. Been here 3 times. Service was slow and everything on the menu tastes similar. Maybe I am missing something.

Service is usually good and the waiters and waitresses are nice. They have a good drink selection and I love that you can get quality draft beer in different sizes from 16 oz to 42 oz. I haven't tried their margaritas but the person I went with did and said they were pretty good since they weren't too syruppy however they lacked alcohol. I've eaten different dishes, but my favorite is the spicy steak taco dinner. I really like that you can dress your tacos how you like. They separate the tacos from the lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Then on a separate plate you get rice and beans. The portions are great and at under $10 for this meal it's a steal.

The food was very ordinary. The highlight of this place is the 60oz Margarita. These guys know how to mix a drink.

This place was really amazing, we went on a weekday afternoon, and it wasn't too busy. We were seated right away. I wish I could remember our waitress' name because she was fantastic. Answered any questions we had about the menu checked on us regularly but not so much that it became an annoyance. Refills were on our table before our drinks were empty she really was great. The food was very very good as well, my fiancee had the taco lunch special and I had the chalupas both had a very generous amount of meat that was very flavorful. My daughter ate up all her chicken fingers and fries. Overall we were very impressed with this place, amazing service, great food with good flavors, and good prices. We got food for all of us got a few tamales to share and desert for under 30 bucks not to mention free chips and salsa. Try it out if your in the area.

The food is good! And the drinks are the bomb! I will be coming back! Good food for being a Mexican restaurant in Indiana! Most of the time I go to Chicago for Mexican food but this is good food!

I have been going to La Caretta for several years and the food has been consistently good. I find this to be rare for Mexican restaurants. I will add that I generally get the chicken fajitas and have by no means sampled most everything on the menu. But my wife and I have had several other items and found them to be very good. One reviewer stated that she received jarred salsa and bagged chips--that is absolutely not what I have experienced. It is clearly homemade. The reason I know is because one batch may not taste the same as another. Don't get me wrong, it's always good but if you visit the restaurant enough times, you'll notice the variance. Sometimes its absolutely great and other times very good. Perhaps the other reviewer was jaded because she went in thinking it was Cuban food as implied in her review. Yelp needs to correct the type of cuisine because it is clearly Mexican--and good Mexican at that! Enjoy!

The food is great and the service is just as good. It does get very busy on weekends or on the dinner rush times, so be prepared for a wait at those times. It is well worth the wait, but even better if you can avoid those times.

They are okay. Drinks are a little pricey and food quality is inconsistent. Went here once about two months ago and ordered the carne Asada and they were great. Went there Saturday and the steak was dry and took over an hour to get our food. I prefer casa del mar in Munster or mi ranchito on Lowell over this place.

This is our favorite go-to bar/restaurant because we know we are always going to get good food, great margaritas and the best salsa around. The staff is very friendly.

Went Friday night. Love the chips and salsa. Had the number 2 combo and really enjoyed it. Love the charro beans. Great margaritas.

I had the Carne Asada w rice and beans. Also guacamole. All were bland and tastless. The plate looked like slop too. I've given this place three chances...I won't be going back. Too many other good Mexican restaurants around.

Nooooo! This place is NOT Cuban - hell its barley Mexican. This place is a Mexican joint for folks that have no idea how Mexican food is supposed to taste. One reviewer mentioned Taco Bell - well that is about how Mexican this gets. Now I did not go in expecting top line Cuban food - I expected and hoped for authentic Latin food. That was not the case. I knew it was not going to be good food when, on Saturday afternoon, I entered into the "Mexican" version of TGIF \ Chilli's. Oh how Yelp let me down with this one. Come on reviewers - be honest - so I can make a better decision of my food selection. Everything tasted as if it came out of a can or some sort of package. Nothing was fresh. And when I say nothing - I mean nothing On our table was placed bagged chips and jarred salsa. We ordered: ~ Chicken and rice soup - which happened to be the best thing on the table. - even though they just threw some frozen vegetables on top of some chicken soup. ~ Enchilada Verde - one bean and one chicken - came with beans and rice the beans tasted super processed - worst then can version and the rice was flavorless. - guacamole was prepackaged and green - nothing else. What a let down. I was hoping that Schererville had some sort of hidden gem. Not at all - they got another chain like place that is passing boxed \ canned \ packaged food off as Mexican. Oh the shame. The shame!

I wish I could give it a -5 seeing that my friend and I have been sick with food poisoning since last night, about 9 hrs after eating lunch there. My water tasted funny, should've walked out then and there. She had the texas burrito and I had flautas. I contacted Lake County Health Dept and filed a complaint. I also called the restaurant to speak to the mgr in hopes of preventing anyone else from getting sick. I explained what happened and was told to call back in a bit because the mgr very busy right now with something else! Are you kidding me right now! Wow! I tried to do the right thing, too bad they couldn't. I hope no one else gets sick like we did!!

Hello potent margaritas. A place that makes good margaritas is a place I need to frequent. They have some excellent lunch specials. I ordered the chicken fajita dish which was pretty good with the complimentary chips and salsa. It was funny coming here since everyone knew my friend. Also, it seems like in Indiana, you can still smoke indoors in the designated smoking area (for those of you that do smoke) The workers are very friendly here. It definitely persuades anyone to want to come back again.

Great food. Lots of space so you never have to wait for a table. Huge drinks if needed. Personally I like this location better than the Merrillville location. I think their food is better.

Food is good, staff is pleasant - perhaps not super efficient; but not horrible either...prices are very reasonable and portions are equally accomodating. Been here twice already - likely to return.

my wife and i love this place. we always go to the schererville location and we get the best service from anywhere we've ever been. The food is always perfect and they have the best carnitas and margaritas. These people on here that are complaining and saying the service was terrible must be really high maintenance. This place rocks.

Review based on first time guest. The place was not very busy. We asked if there were any specials and the waitress had to check. No biggie, it was only 1 special that basically was 1.00 off of one of their burritos. Not that special. The chips were really thin and crispy and were warm which was nice. The salsa was good but had a lot of cilantro and it was really runny. Cilantro is good but just not for my stomach. You did not get little plates for your chips and salsa, which we found odd because every mexican restaurant we have been to so far gives us an appetizer plate. My hubby got a margarita said it was tasty and had a good amount of liquor in it. I let the waitress know that my hubby and I were going to share food. She nodded and smiled. We got chicken taquitos (5.00 and some odd change) and fajita quesadilla. I must have read the menu wrong... I thought it read that you get a side salad and rice and beans. I asked her if we could get 2 plates so we could share she nods. The waitress asks us if we want more chips and I said yes since we have beans coming. So our meal comes out, taquitos were ok but have more veggies than chicken. For the money I felt they should have been a little more filled. Fajita quesadilla booo... It was large and cut in half more like a tortilla sandwich. The flavor of the steak was just charred it was ok but nothing to come back for at all. The side salad was on the plate and I wouldn't have called it that. To me it was just a garnish or a condiment to put on your quesadillas. We have rice but no beans and I ask the waitress if I can see a menu. It actually said that the $10.00 and some change quesadilla comes with rice OR beans. She never asked. I would have rather had the beans. I asked for the 2 plates again but they never came. Our bill came to 36.00 but would have been 26 without the margarita. So why the low rating? Most decent places that I come to I give from 3-4 stars and if it is excellent in service, quality and beyond I give it a 4. This gets a 2 because of the dirty bathroom, the waitress not asking about the beans cause I was bummed (and not bringing us plates after asking 2x) and mostly the food quality for the price. PS- I'm writing this the day after and I've spent most of the morning in my bathroom

I've been coming here over the years since this restaurant opened in Schererville and unfortunately, the last few times, I've had not so pleasant experiences. Some of the things that occurred: -One of the menus was dirty with food in it, to the point where we were grossed out by it. -My friend found the paper that keeps the napkin and utensils together IN her glass of water. How is that even possible? -Our waters didn't get refilled during the entire meal. -The chips and salsa were empty so we asked for another salsa. I guess we were too specific because we got more salsa, but no chips. -The waiter was nowhere to be found so we had to ask another server for boxes and our check. More often than not, I would order the spicy steak tacos because I really crave and like the spice. However, the quality and flavor of food is truly deteriorating. There was no "heat" to the steak and it also seems like the portion of meat is decreasing. The last time I went in, I was hoping that the other times were just bad nights, but I was still disappointed, both with the service and the food.

Bland food that was not at all weekday I expected. I'm a big fan of burritos, but I would rather eat taco bell than get this place again. One person in our company ordered a cheeseburger and despite my initial making fun of them, I have to say they're the ones one's that enjoyed the meal. Even the chips we're gross. Only reason they're getting a star is because of the big margarita.

I have mixed feelings on the food here. If you know me at all though you know my "rules" for a Mexican restaurant. Which explains the 4 stars. The food isn't bad. It's all pretty much just average though. Maybe an item here or there slightly above average. I know I've been behaving like a fatty lately, but I'm always still kinda hungry after my dinner too. The margaritas will rock your world! They are delicious and require a designated driver. They make me happy!

Hands down...best Top Shelf Margaritas in the region. The staff is always very friendly. Good fish tacos and pico de gallo. Love their fajitas.

Loved it! I was worried it would not be as good as the original, but this is definitely not the case. As a consequence, the wait times are just as long as the original. (an hour for dinner on the weekend) -Food was great, everyone in our party enjoyed what they had, although for my tastes, I would not recommend the carne asada tacos. -Servers and staff were friendly. -Full bar serves up all kinds of delicious looking drinks. -Prices are reasonable, and the portions are huge. -Restaurant is decorated very festively. Bottom Line: In my opinion, this is my second favorite restaurant in the region (behind El Taco Real). I highly recommend this La Carreta. PS Their refried beans are some of the BEST I've ever had. Also, ask for their spicy salsa. It's smokey and delicious.

Outstanding service. Food is good with sizable portion...it is a well execution for the non-adventurous type looking for commercialized mexican items (there's nothing cuban about this place...not sure where that descriptor came from) ...This is not the most authentic Mexican cuisine out there, and some of the ingredients lack in quality. But this place is consistent in their execution and the staff are very attentive. If you are looking for a place you can depend on to get your mexican food fix, this is the place by schererville...Although for something that will out and out wow you...you'll need to drive a bit.

Better than I expected! This seems to be a place people go for drinks late at night, but I took my dad here for lunch one day and we had a great meal. I can't vouch for the beans and rice (which can make or break a Mexican place) because we ordered entirely a la carte. The $4 chile relleno was small, but delicious. The tacos were big. The "carnitas" taco was just slow cooked pork. Very tender, but hardly any seasoning. It's better at Taco Trader. But the chicken tacos were surprisingly flavorful. Each taco came on its own plate with VERY generous portions of cheese, lettuce, and tomato. There was a nice array of hot sauces on the table, too. The menu and the vibe here is very much like Jalapeno's, so it's authentic, but a liiiiittle on the simple/bland side. Prices for many dishes were well over $10, but there were some interesting seafood/steak options. The inside was nicely decorated, though, so this is a pretty nice place to go. Especially considering how crappy the strip mall it's near has become.

Beyond slow service coupled with unremarkable food makes me as a consumer not so thrilled about this place. The drinks were alright.. I had their spicy carne asada tacos and they were worse than if I would have gotten them from say Taco Bell. And chipotle would have been miles better and I hate going or comparing to chain restaurants but they do provide a valid baseline in which to compare against. Definitely won't be going back here.

It was dinner time on my 7.5 hour drive back to the 'sha (from the 'ville) and I just happened to have some friends in the area. When I told them I was coming up 41, they suggested La Carreta. The place is easy to find and there is a lot of seating inside, we didn't have to wait to be seated. They have a bar and plenty of t.v.s if you want to watch a sporting event. They have a large menu. It was hard deciding, but the chips, salsa, and guac are delicious! I ended up having the Carne Asada Tacos with corn tortillas. I love Carne Asada... in fact I am missing an artery clogging helping of Carne Asada Fries! Anyway, the tacos came on two plates: one plate had the tacos, covered with foil and lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. The second plate had rice and beans. There was no pico or sour cream, but I didn't want to ask if it costed extra because I was told by my friends that they were paying and not to argue. The Carne Asada was so good! They double tortilla and because the tacos are so full, you could make six tacos if you half the amount of meat in each taco. The rice and the beans were pretty good too, but I kind of stuck to the tacos because they were delicious. The service was really fast too! If I am ever on the drive down to the 'sha, I will probably stop in again... next time... the Carnitas!

Probably a 2.5 restaurant. Really, this place reminds me of the Chi-Chi's restaurant chain of years gone by, this is present day Chi-Chi's but with a Red Robin type feel [help yourself to the lollipops at the cashier's station at the door]. Sort of tacky, over done commercial decor -- just does not feel authentic. Gigantic menu that makes choosing a entree confusing and difficult. Plus, there's something about a gigantic menu [plastic and laminated] with so many entrees [which I don't believe is a good thing] that signals (to me) greasy spoon diner -- processed and ready to go, that's the only way a restaurant of this size could operate. Commercial style red, green and white chips with very so-so salsa that is mashed to a pulp. Why is it that Mexican restaurants fail to provide small dishes for your chips and salsa? Messy, drippy salsa and no dish? Come on. Should not to ask for a dish. Beers were nice and [very cold] and at least they asked if you'd like a frosty mug -- very good. Staff was nice and attentive, although I am not a big fan of cash receipts from an adding machine that just list amounts w/out the item to refer to. I had the Carnitas Tacos, which actually, were good, not overly seasoned but definitely, somewhat dry -- I had to soak them with salsa. DH had fajitas which he liked. Yes, I'd go back but wish that NW Indiana had a really upscale Mexican / Oaxacan to choose from when you feel like getting something more authentic and made to order from fresh ingredients.

Didn't the lake county health department close them down for a few days recently?

  • Julie M.

I really didn't like the food here, but my friends did. It kinda tasted a little "processed" to me. Like the regular "chain" type, been there done that food, but then again I live in a neighborhood with tons of authentic Mexican food, so I guess for Indiana this is good food for them.

I am Mexican and I love Mexican food and this does not deserve to be called Mexican food. Maybe Mexican style but that is a disservice to real Mexican food. This should be called Mexican't Food. If you want real Mexican food, seriously folks don't do it. If you want a step up from Taco Bell go right ahead.

No matter what you order on the menu, everything is amazing!!! I'm trying to eat healthier, and they have plenty of options for that too. Who doesn't want a salad with steak in it?! Will always come back. Service is very fast and friendly too. Food is always fresh and wonderful.

This fantastic little restaurant is the perfect addition to one of Schererville's main thouroughfares. I must have driven by it 6 or 7 times before I asked a friend about it and after she said it was good, I decided to try it out. *This place is the perfect place to throw someone a surprise party!!! The atmosphere is nothing short of charming, thanks largely in part to the beautiful murals on the wall. They depict life on a rural Mexican ranch, (la vida de rancho) with children joyfully scampering in the foreground, a sunset in the background, and a big hairy rooster standing on a post. (HMMM...I'll have to do my research to confirm the existance of this supposed Wooly Rooster...just cuz you can paint it on a wall, doesn't mean I will believe it exists, Buster!!!) Just as my cohorts and I had begun to openly ponder a rooster with fur, our food arrived. I ordered the Enchilladas de Maria (or something like that...) and they were pretty darn good. They were served at a suitable tempurature, unlike those OTHER Mexican restaurants who serve the food boiling lava hot!!! Ay Corumba! That's way too picante for my discerning pallette. Fortunately that wasn't the case here. So who should go here? Everyone, of course! You can take a date, a friend, your kids, or people you work with. Yay!!! The noise level is just about perfect, as you can easily carry on a coversation with your cohorts, but you never forget that you are in a place that' designed to for F. U. N. :)

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
