Since my initial review I have been berated with negative and profane emails from Taco Trader. Sorry guys but the truth hurts and trust me you cannot silence me.

This place has the same food as the old Mexican Inn in Chicago. The food is all delicious and their salsa is the most amazing you will find (mix it with their refried beans). Drove almost 2 hours to this place and it was well worth it!!!

Solide Mexican food. Clean restaurant with friendly staff. Chicken tacos were very good and the ingredients seemed to be very fresh.

Updated review: The food is still as great as I've said in my previous review. This is a review of the atmosphere inside the restaurant. The management needs to change their attitude towards customers. My family went visited the other day and heavy metal was blaring the whole time. My father asked the manager/owner to reduce the volume a bit and his response was "that's the way we keep it" and refused to change it. He then proceeded to ignore my disabled father at the counter for another customer when all he needed was a take home box. If there's anything to keep me and other customers away it is the unfriendly management. Food = 5 star Service = 2 - 3 star

Great guacamole and good lunch specials for a-la-carte items.

The Tacos were delicious and reminded me of Sonora AZ! The service was super and I'm glad a coworker referred me! I'll be back!

Loved it!! We will definitely go back. The crispy tacos are really good and the service was great!! Very friendly!

Love this place! Must try the cheese sauce and the steak burrito! Unfortunately, I do not like any of the salsas, really, so I can't give it five stars. If you're a nacho oerson, definitely try their nacho dish (has guacamole, sour cream, etc. on it). The workers are super friendly and all the food is fare trade. Sort of like a Chipotle without the person wrapping it up for you as you progress down the line.

I live in Chicago, but my husband's parents live in Dyer. We tried this place while in town and it was awesome! It's like really authentic mexican (vs Chipotle) and seems pretty healthy. The shredded chicken was awesome! I got the bowl and my husband got the tostadas. Both were excellent! We will definitely be back. not sure who all the people are that are saying it's horrible. Haha, also it isn't expensive at all. Totally in line with all the other fast casual places.

The only reason why I gave three stars is because all I tried were the crispy tacos and the fresh-cut fries & I must say the taco were really good fries were delicious I was pretty surprised ... Place is called taco trader for a reason THE TACOS not gonna lie I'd be a lil skeptical on trying any thing else. So with that being said go get u some taco and SHUT YO ASS UP !! o yea tellem (real T) sent u

I'm giving this place 5 stars because I was quite satisfied with my visit today and it's my first time trying it out. - Fresh food and appropriately priced portions. - Fast and friendly service. - The restaurant is very clean. They have restrooms! - Great for families. I ordered the Trader Bowl with pork. Very tasty!! It comes with Spanish rice, lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole, some salsa and a sprinkling of cheese. Their salsa is surprisingly good, considering they make it themselves along with their hot sauce. It was comfortably spicy (for me at least) and flavorful. Overall, I was very satisfied with their food and friendly service. I'm definitely coming back to try something else from their menu - that Soft Cheese sounds good!

We always wondered why it looked empty inside every time we passed by. Now we know. Don't waste your time or money here.

Okay, so I tried something new today. This place definitely isn't a vegan haven, BUT, they do have options! I walked in and was immediately greeted with a friendly smile from the young man behind the counter. The atmosphere is clean and quite nice for an independant store... Simple, not over done and everything is very sturdy- I didn't feel like I was going to hit the floor. I asked about the menu and was given very courteous answers. On the downside: The beans DO have lard in them and there is no other 'veggie' meat option for the dishes. Upside?: The fries are absolutely fantastic! They put them in their own fryer so vegans/vegetarians don't have to worry about the meat issue. You get a nice large box and you cannot beat the price!! The guacamole was fresh (and there is no sour cream for you vegans!) but I personally would have liked more lime and cilantro in it. They may not have a bunch of vegan options but I will definitely be coming back! What I did get was fantastic and great for the price :-)

Still is horrible overpriced food. What a disappointment. In my opinion the food is unsafe and from what I see not so sanitary. Get ur act together. My prediction is this will be a empty storefront by 2016. Atleast I hope so

Not very good. I went here and the food was expensive (which is fine if its good), but the food was worse than most normal mexican restaurants around here. Definitely not worth going to.

  • Katie G.

Love this place. Great quality food at an affordable price. We mainly order takeout and food is always ready on time. My kids love the kids meal. Chicken, pork, and steak are all delicious, and the nachos are ridiculously good!

  • Michelle F.

I wanted to try this place, and I did. I'm sorry I did. Everything you order on the side is extra. The large pop that looks like a small is $2.00! The salsa is just tomato paste with spices...bad! The steak burrito was so small, and the meat itself was cut in large chunks. If you want real Mexican food, go to Ruebens!

  • Coach H.

The food is FANTASTIC! I absolutely love the crispy beef tacos and guacamole! Have you tried their new Fish Tacos? Absolutely a must! The topping for this taco is fresh and sweetened with honey. It is just a wonderful fresh combination. All fish lovers must try this one.

I came here on the recommendation from a friend that raved about how good the food was here. I tried the crispy chicken tacos and got the dinner that came with rice, beans and salad. It was underwhelming and I actually didn't even finish the tacos. They were watery and not very flavorful. I came back a second time because my friend again told me that I had to try the beef tacos before I made my final judgement. Well, I tried again and I was still underwhelmed. I got the crispy beef tacos and they were just ok. Much better than the chicken, but still just ok. I did like that they were piping hot and fresh, but they weren't very flavorful. The owner, I think, was very friendly but that's not enough for me to go back and try them again.

I'm giving this place 5 stars even though it's not even my favorite Mexican place. It's kinda odd, to be honest. But there are a lot of things this place gets right. 1) Whenever I'm here, the service is exceptional. Someone comes out to greet me and take my order, at which point they immediately wash their hands and get to work. 2) The decor is very impressive for an independent restaurant. Nice tile, heavy chairs, a few booths, and nice painting/signage. 3) Everything is served in PAPER boxes! I wouldn't say I'm an eco-nut, but I'm sick to death of the wasteful and potentially harmful styrofoam/plastic food containers that these places put scalding hot food into. 4) I'm not the biggest fan of beans/rice, but they're terrific here. I tried the fries last week and my god, it was the BIGGEST order of fries I've ever seen, and they were delicious. And a steal! Only $2, I think! When my take-out order was ready, the guy let me know that he left the fry box open on top in my bag so the fries wouldn't get soggy. So they definitely pay attention to details here. 5) The tacos themselves are pretty small. The "soft cheese" was a flour tortilla taco, modestly filled, with liquid cheese on it. Not very special. I stick with the "Trader Bowl" which, despite not having staples like beans or cheese, was a large, filling salad of romaine, rice, guacamole, salsa, and tomatoes. I got it with pork, which was FANTASTIC and came in cubed chunks that fell apart when I touched them even with my plastic fork. Now that's how you do pork. It costs about the same as a burrito bowl from Chipotle/Qdoba but was a little bigger, I'd say. So I get some of the lower reviews here for the tacos themselves. But whenever I want a mexican salad with a side of fries or rice/beans, this is where I'm going.

The food that I received was not the greatest. The food was definitely not fresh at all. Restaurant was clean, but the quality of the food was poor. I have not returned ever since.

Such a mixed review by yelpers! I would give more stars if the prices were reflected by size. The tacos are small but I liked them. I was excited to try a bacon taco but it didn't live up to my hopes. The soft cheese were good but so small!! My favorite entree on their menu is their version of the burrito bowl. Yum!!!! And I was actually full after eating it. Their salsa def needs work and the guacamole could use some pizazz... The chips are good but the FRIES are the best!!!! My favorite fries hands down in the area!!! And the portion on them is huge!! I wish they'd have fried ice cream on the menu. All in all I like this place a lot, just wish it was kinder to my wallet or potions reflected prices.

I was very disappointed to say the least. Although the folks here are nice, it does not overcome the situation. I had their signature shells that were very greasy and small. You may think this is funny but I don't, for I had diarrhea for 2 days from eating their food, I think it was the greasy shells. I spent $12 and was hungry from the small portions so I went to Burger King on the way home. The menu is difficult to understand, very pricey and does not look appealing. The tacos are so small where as you cannot put their rice, beans and green vinegar onions and something I could not recognize to fit in the shell so you have to eat it separate. I don't believe this place will be around in one year for no one will go back a second time. I prefer Bull Pen in Schererville or Blue 82 in St. John for their taco specials because they are tasty and only cost $2 each. Taco Trader you are a great disappointment.

Not sure what the other Yelpers were thinking with less than 5-star review. For just over $7 for three tacos, I was very happy. Grilled chicken was really tasty and the lettuce, tomato, etc. were very fresh. Attentive staff and clean restaurant.

Great tacos!!! Food is very fresh and chips are excellent. The service was very friendly and attentive.

Pretty quick, and pretty tasty. I had a trader bowl- thought it was a decent size. Looking forward to trying the taco fries and bacon taco (everything is better with bacon) I will definitely make a return trip.

the pork dinner is my favorite but the crispy tacos are also good.a mexican restaurant that sells fries is good in my book!!

  • Kristin P.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't addicted to this place. I've tried nearly everything on the menu and enjoyed it all. The crispy chicken tacos a with a half bean/half rice side is my current obsession. The staff is friendly, the food is delicious and fresh, the price/portions are good too. My only complaint is the lack of steak tacos on the menu.

My husband and I love this place . We have been going there once a week for the last two months and have not had a bad experience! The food is tasty and the personal service is great! I'm in love with the guacamole and chips. We get the usual soft steak tacos and I changed it up with the grilled chicken and fell in love with that too. I recommend this place to everyone!

The first two reviews must have been written by friends, family, or the owners themselves. This place is terrible, just terrible. My husband was dying to try this place, he couldn't wait for it to open and talked about it for weeks until it did. He brought home hard shell tacos, soft cheese tacos w/chicken, and a side of chips and salsa. The portions were those of an appetizer. (I am not a large person, and I really don't eat that much, 2 tacos and some chips from this place and I am still hungry!! Like ready to go out to dinner somewhere else, hungry.) The cheesy tacos were tiny and smothered in a flavorless cheese sauce. The hard shell tacos were also bland to my taste. The salsa is nasty, I would be really disappointed if it was good because you get a ton of chips and just a tiny cup of salsa. I hate to give a new establishment such a bad review but nothing we got was worth talking about. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. There are too many other great places to get Mexican food in this area, and that is where we are headed now...another great place in the area to get dinner after our appetizer. Sorry Taco Trader but I will not be trading with you anymore. My money is going elsewhere. P.S. I wouldn't have given this place even 1 star, but Yelp made me.

Dead on Stacy. I too was looking forward to the opening of this new semi-fast food restaurant and could not have been more disappointed. The server recommended the crispy tacos and they should be called greasy tacos because it left a large amount of it in the bottom of the basket. 3 tacos for $6.25 was pricey as they were pretty small. I added a beverage and generous side of refried beans and my bill was over $10. The decor was dull but clean and the staff were all friendly and attentive. Next time I want pricey semi-fast food I'll head to Chipolata in Munster.

  • Todd J N.

Kind of pricey and the tacos are small but it is fresh. Loved the side of beans I purchased, they tasted so fresh and not that just out of the can taste. Too mother and sister and they had gotten an order of guacamole. They loved it. Had their crispy beef, yes there were greasy but good. Also got to try a bacon and bean taco, it was great. The smokey ness of the bacon with the freshness of the beans. Will go back.

Wow...what a difference a few miles makes. Just went to Ruben's on Sheffield in Dyer and it was delicious. The ambiance was welcoming from the start and the service was outstanding. But most of all, the food was delicious ! And guess what...they give u free chips and salsa..unlike Taco Trader which charges u for them.. If the owner of Taco Trader wants to get a lesson on welcoming and ambiance, they should visit Reuben's...these employees smile, are accommodating and want their customers to come back. I don't think the Taco Trader's owners gives a care if a person comes back or not. Not recommended at all.

don't waste your time steak taco dinner cold and tough sent it back same GARBAGE . Fish tacos small and nothing on them but fish and a tortilla so people save your money go to a real Mexican restaurant

  • Jen T.

I really enjoyed this place! I love the crispy chicken tacos, soft chicken tacos, beans & rice! The dressing that they put on the salad is so good. I'll have to admit that I don't get very full after I eat the entire entrée but let's be REAL they're tacos!!!! I have to put lime on everything and they do not charge when I order lime on the side. The prices are kind of high but that hasn't stopped me from traveling there to stuff my face. I'm so surprised to hear all the negative reviews in regards to the owner. He has been so incredibly kind whenever I've went there to eat. My sister accompanied me one day and she didn't order anything and the owner noticed her sitting there while I was eating like a maniac (don't judge me I was 8 months pregnant LOL) and he gave her a free taco because he wanted her to sample the menu. She had asked if they served dessert and the owner said no but he came back out 10 minutes later with a dessert he cooked up in the back!!!! Now that's A++++ service!!!!! BTW, I have never gotten sick from the food there and the place is spotless every time I visit.

For years my favorite place to eat was the Mexican Inn in East Chicago. My husband and I would drive an hour just to eat there. The Taco Trader is owned by the nephew's of the Mexican Inn owners and have brought all of the best items to us in Dyer. I have been a few times now and it has not disappointed. I can recommend the tostada's, taco's, taco salad and soft cheese! I wish they sold the salsa by the jar! The atmosphere there is comfortable, clean, the staff is very friendly and there is even free wifi... I think everyone should give this a fair shake before taking the opinion of others...And eat in if you can, taco's to go are never a good idea. (there is a reason food critic's never order to go) The only thing I would change is the fact that you can only order things in 3's....It would be nice to order however many you wanted of each. It would make it easier to mix it up.

When I visited Texas I fell in love with tex mex. I couldn't find any tex mex style restaurants close to my area. Thank goodness I now live in Dyer. I love this spot! Everything was delicious. I will be a regular patron here. I can say they do need some kind of really hot sauce or salsa for us spicy lovers!! Other than that its a good spot.

    (4)
  • Caryn B.

Just like the old Mexican Inn. And no, I am not family or friends of the family...just a patron of theirs for 40+ years. For those that are hating on the place perhaps you should go back to Taco Bell for your "authentic" Mexican food.

My husband and I come here often. We live relatively close by in IL. I'm not sure how people are saying that the portions are small. The tacos are made with great tortillas which are standard size. Once you fry them, of course they're going to shrink. They usually stuff the tacos and aren't cheap with the portions. I love how the chicken is cooked and seasoned; it's definitely not bland or dry like some yelpers are saying. Their beans are great, just like my mom and abuelita make them. So their salsa isn't hot, who cares? It's still very tasty. The staff is extremely friendly and very accommodating. They'll go out of their way to make you happy, and I really appreciate that. We like this place so much, we had them cater my husband's graduation party this summer and all of our guests were very pleased with the food, not a drop was left over. We've introduced and recommended this place to a lot of our friends and family and everyone has had a great dining experience. I would choose them over Chipotle's cheap and skimpy portions any time!

Love this place just like the Mexican inn I grew up on only fresher! Soft cheese and crispy beef delish!

  • Kary H.

Very good crunchy tacos. I really liked the Spanish rice as well..it is a little pricey, but fresh food.

    (4)
  • Sasha K.

(Based on carry-out) I like that their crispy tacos do not use the preformed shells as those are my favorite. With that being said, the filling is a little bland. The price for the portion size is rather high. I do not like beans so I requested double the rice. On both occasions I received one container of rice which leads me to believe the small bowls are only half full when getting the beans and the rice. Not a big fan of the fact the tacos are only sold in 3's.

Many of the old neighborhood places from the South East Side of Chicago have found their way out to Indiana now that most of us have migrated east. Taco Trader is the fresher, more modernized incarnation of Mexican Inn, the taco place that I grew up on in my neighborhood. I'm glad that the same great taste and tradition that has meant so much to me growing up is being preserved for future generations. If you're not down with the prices or the best crispy tacos this side of Mexico or if you enjoy tons of guacamole on a taco, you probably didn't grow up in OUR neighborhood. In that case, I'm sure there are plenty of chips and salsa at Pepe's for you. But if you grew up on the East Side, you'll feel like you're right back on 95th Street. If you're tired of bland, garden variety gringo-ized "Mexican" food and you're looking for some real delicious Mexican food, get on out to Taco Trader.

Ate here with my son - I would have to agree with some of the other reviews. Food was very fresh, and the sides were really very good. We got 3 crispy chicken and 3 crispy beef tacos. These came with super tasty fresh tomatoes on them, which was a great touch. We both liked the chicken better, but the beef was good. We also had chips, salsa, guacamole, and Spanish rice. All were very good, the salsa was especially excellent and had a really good smokey chile taste. We had all of the above with two drinks for $21 and change, which I didn't think was so bad for food cooked fresh when we ordered it. Special thanks to the owner who personally came to our table to make sure our food was good, then thanked us twice for coming in. We will definitely be back.

I couldnt wait to come here when all of my follow Mexican Inn lovers told me about this place opening. I have to say that the flavor and the style of the tacos were spot on. Unfortunately the tacos are about half the size of the ones at the Mexican Inn. Although I totally will go back and pay the harsh price of $6.25 for 3 tacos that didn't fill me up, I have to say, if you're very hungry, I would eat something before you go. Still worth it in my eyes, but im not even a big eater & I ate 5 crispy beef tacos and was still hungry :( Im still giving 5 s though, because I have been craving these for years!

I have been missing the Mexican Inn since it's been gone. It was a neighborhood icon. Thankfully the taste of the Mexican Inn lives on through their nephew at Taco Trader. The same tastes that made the Mexican Inn a staple for 50 years are here. I am so glad to have found this place!

Too greasy! I really wanted to like this place. I'm always willing to try new establishments, and this one looked promising- clean, modern interior, good design and advertising, but that's where it ends. The menu is sparce, the tacos are small and deep fried to death. The salsa is nothing more than chunky tomato sauce! Actually tomato sauce has more flavor. Hubby ordered the beef which, we were told was the house specialty. It was luke-warm at best when it arrived at our table. Now, mind you, this was not the lunch rush... This was 6 at night with approx. 4 other patrons. I hate to sound like a food snob, but my stomach was in utter distress when we got home.

The food is really good and that's as far as the good points go. The pricing is kinda high for the quantity you get but the worse part Is the extremely limited menu, I guess the name says it all.

The Soft-Cheese Tacos are the best! I live in Chicago and will be patronizing this restaurant on a regular basis.

Glad I finally ventured in! Nice little place to stop and refuel for lunch on a day of errands. I had the 3 chicken tacos and asked for them on soft corn instead of crispy. Everything was fresh and tasty, a clean and stylish restaurant, imo fair price for 3 tacos, very friendly and attentive staff, felt full when done eating and I'll definately go again and tell my friends and family to try it out too. I hope it does well and that other curious folks try it out for themselves too. Also, hope that when the weather gets warmer they'll have some shaded outdoor seating.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
