This is by far one of the best places to eat at for Mexican food in the Northwest Indiana area. I have tried many Mexican food restaurants and this one is great every time. The salsa is great and the fajitas are amazing. The service and atmosphere is always perfect. I really enjoy seeing how clean the restaurant is too. I would go here any day.

Fernando and his wife are wonderful people (owners). The food is solid. My personal favorites are the Tacos El Pastor and the Southwest Chicken Salad. The servers and atmosphere is fun and friendly. Every time I eat here I feel like I'm on vacation

This place is really great. The fajitas were just as they should be and brought on a sizzling plate that kept going for several minutes. Very tasty spices. Will definitely come back here when in the area.

Best place in town, way better than El Salto definitely a must place to go

I've been to El Cantorito twice during it's first couple of months in town and if you're trying to figure out if you should go there or to El Salto down the street, I would heartily recommend heading to El Salto. The food I've had was quite bland and wasn't nearly as tasty as El Salto. Like El Salto, it's a bit noisy, but the atmosphere is good.

Loved the fact the server was honest about the tamales not being homemade. Also, liked the fact he was attentive, friendly and offered recommendations. Carnitas were greasy but that's the way they should be if fried in pork fat. Guacamole just ok and the rice/beans sides just "blah." Wouldn't seek this place out but feel safe grabbing a meal there if dragged.

I love going into this place, they have the friendliest staff and who cares if they have broken English. Authentic food and help. Margaritas are excellent especially if you are a regular. They take care of there favorite customers who treat them right.

I pretty much echo the review by Heather H. It might be better as a non-vegetarian, but the typical enchilada / quesadilla basic food was bland enough that I almost didn't bother finishing my meal. Don't get me wrong, i'm a man that enjoys bland food more than i'm happy to admit, but this was just too bland. The chips and salsa were good. Beer selection was typical, but good. The margaritas are cheap and gigantic. Come here for the drink, go somewhere else for the food.

I've come here twice now because I honestly forgot how the food was on my first trip, if that gives you any idea of my experience. - Good service - Decent margarita - Not much in the way of vegetarian food - The vegetarian food we did get was bland at best (side of steamed veggies was clearly of the frozen variety), and honestly overall rather disappointing. Perhaps this place is better if you eat meat? I would come back for a margarita and some guacamole, but that's pretty much it.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Went with my husband and two kids. We were starving after a full day of hockey tryouts. Walked in, and it took a few minutes for anyone to look us. Finally got to sit down and had a terrible waiter (he used to work at EL Salto, so I knew he was going to be bad. Took about 15 min. to take our order. After he took our order, that was the last we saw of him. He never brought us more chips....the waitress at another table did. I drank my water and needed more. The waiter looked right at my cup and kept walking. Another waiter noticed and filled up the water. After 50 minutes of having no food and no waiter, we put $5 on the table and went to Mcdonalds. We just walked out. We saw people get their food who came after us and eat and leave. Our waiter never once said a word to us!! I have no idea how the food is, because we walked out! I wish I knew the waiters name, so I could complain. On a positive note....all the other customers looked happy! We will NEVER go here again!!!!

Moved to Chesterton in August and have been to El Cantarito six times since! I've had a different entree every time I've come in and have been very happy with every dish! Margaritas are very good as well. Service has been exceptional all but one trip when we got a new waitress, other than that, pure perfection! Highly recommended!

Steak fajitas taste good but they're not really fajitas. It's a skillet of green peppers with steak on top. Don't get the chiles rellenos they are super greasy and the cheese isn't good. It tastes like greasy cream cheese. :(

Fresh and fun atmosphere with great healthy options if you know how to order here. It's small but clean. Steamed veggies tastes watery and boiled. And the kids enchilada was very flavorless. Felt a little neglected, ordered orange juice for an adult and it came in a juice box. BUT my veggie fajitas were great! The enchiladas were supposed to be beef and we got chicken.

Ordered food to pick up over the phone, the staff was friendly. However, the food was average. The beans were not very good & rice was just OK. Chips and salsa weren't bad. My boyfriend ordered fajitas and we didn't even receive any tortillas. The taco I ordered was disgusting, but the floutas were good.

Basic cantina chow...close to freeway...clean restrooms...food was decent. .. servers don't speak much English,so order was a bit off. .. but not bad for freeway-side independently owned casual Mexican. .. saved my sanity from sitting in redic traffic...so there's that ..

Get the volcancitos!! 1. Anyways our server was very friendly and attentive +1 star 2. The restaurant was clean and likewise the restrooms.+1 star 3. The decor was very inviting +1 star 4. We absolutely loved the volcancitos one of each mini tostadas! Very tasty, very meaty, and cheesy... Full of flavor and good +1 star 5. We shared the pobanzo? Torta with chorizo, cheese and your traditional Torta fixings/sour.cream lettuce tomato, etc..dipped in guajijo so definitely unique. The chorizo was a little overdone for our taste... A bit burnt to be honest and the.guajijo needed pairing with another, possibly sweeter pepper -1 star 6. The music wasn't your standard Mexican hillbilly cantarations? Instead peppy, Mexican added a nice vibe +1 star 7. The meats on our volcancitos were very rich in flavor, quite tender, I know the other food will be better. +1 star... 8. The prices are more than reasonable and they gave nice drink specials

Their fajitas are the best around. I definitely suggest you eat in though, the food tastes better when eaten there.

We went to el salto and there was a wait so we came here. As soon as you walked through the door you were met with unbelievably great service. The food was also excellent and the presentation looks like a 4 star restaurant. I don't think we will be back to el salto anymore. This is our new go to Mexican restaurant. Must try!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
