It's a great place if you want authentic Thai food without much of a fine dining experience. Service is of supreme level in its own way. I said in its own way because Chef/owner sings off key , make jokes and the waitress is too humble and welcoming. Flavor of food might be little different from other Thai restaurants because as I said it's more authentic and recipes are not modified to suit taste of most of the local people. But if you want to taste real Thai or just want to try something new then this place deserves your visit. Thai hot is just medium for me but you can ask for spice tray and add more heat. It's simple quite ,relatively small restaurant with plenty of parking.

Best pad thai you can get anywhere! Their spring rolls are amazing as well! The guy there is pretty hilarious as well

I am so happy. This place is still thriving. Was on a little rush when I came in!! Just found out they have brown rice! Not sure how I missed that all these years! I had #52 which says it has ground chicken. The chicken was not ground, but it's good and I asked for extra veggies. It's so good!! The owners are hard working and prove that it helps to stick to it.

I've been here many times...but never really reviewed it. *happens a lot* It just isn't very good...that is the simplest way to put it. That being said...I continue to come here because I love Thai and it is the ONLY place to go in Carmel! *CRY* I do hear that a new place opened up just recently in Carmel, and I will have to check it out. What is wrong with this place? First of all...cleanliness.....this place is dirty...floors are gross, silverware will be frequently not cleaned. I received inconsistent food quality over different times, which is odd because it is a small ma & pa run place and the guy is always the one cooking. Speaking of him, he is probably the only reason this place gets the extra star. I always get good service and he is always very cheerful. Will I be back? depends on how this other place in Carmel is...but as my trust 8-ball says....."Stars say No"

I stopped in for lunch and had the special. I found the Pad Thai (Chicken) to be very good. Nice reasonable portions and the special includes warm rice paper egg roll and a house salad. Both were tasty with a sweet Thai dressing. Service was quick and professional with and mom and pop feel too restaurant. The facility itself isn't much to look at, a basic strip mall box...go for the food not the decor. I would recommend for quick and tasty Thai. Bonus is the Pad Thai and rice paper egg roll are gluten free if that's important to you.

For Carmel, it looks a little sketch, but it is definitely good. They have kind of old cheesy decorations and smooth jazz int he background. However, I come here all the time because their food is of solid quality.

We were the only ones in here on a Monday night. Since the place was empty, save a really odd looking talkative lady picking up food, we were concerned. But the food was really good. I had the ginger chicken and the peanut tofu. The peanut sauce was like a gravy but so good. and the ginger was super gingery. The service was fast and the owners were funny with thier broken english comments about who should pay for dinner. I would come back.

I had the stir fry with chicken. While it had good flavor, there was something gritty about the sauce. The chicken is questionable, as well. The silverware was dirty and my water glass had a hair on it. I probably will not go back.

Really great Thai food. After living in Chicago for 10 years, I've had excellent Thai food; I've yet to find a place on the North side that has such authentic taste. It's is a large menu. Soups are awesome, (I wish the appetizer menu was more diverse), the soft egg rolls are amazing, and the Pad Thai is great. I'm not a meat eater, so disappointed I don't receive a better price when ordering as an herbivore (foregoing meat clearly has a lower cost to them). Dinner prices are slightly high, but in a high rent district what do we expect? My family eats here often, and we don't eat out too much. I wish the inside of the restaurant was cleaner. The bathroom needs a good scrubbing; a cleaning crew would be useful. I love that it is a mom and pop. They are so kind and give the place a WONDERFUL atmosphere. Pop is the cook and fun to be around. Mom is the kind waitress and always brings us fruit as dessert to round out the meal.

I'm a Chicago transplant and Thai food is a bit of the stereotypical take out in those parts. My first full day as a (back again) Hoosier, I needed some Thai food to go with my unpacking. The guy who answered the phone was super cute. It's definitely a mom and pop place and by the three seconds I spent in the restaurant while grabbing my food, it seems like the service was good. Unfortunately the food was only okay. I was having a very hard time deciding between three and four stars. The food just wasn't that flavorful. The soup was bland and the Crab Rangoon was super greasy. Yes, I know it's Crab Rangoon, but the grease factor was too much. I was worried that I didn't see Tofu on their menu, but I was able to order it. I got the 52 which had my beloved Basil sauce and although I asked for spicy, it still didn't have much flavor. Yes, I know I'm pasty, but I do like heat. What's more I asked for it! If I could give 3.5 stars I would. I'll probably give it another go when the Thai mood strikes again.

Don't go! They have slipped terribly and the food isn't worth eating - and is so NOT authentic Thai.

Thanks for yelp for helping me find this spot. I am originally from the Chicago area and I have tired several Thai places in Indianapolis and have been unable to find one that satisfies my craving. That was until I find this gem. Although their hours are kinda weird, it's a great place to pick up some Pad Thai. I have recommend this place to several co workers and even my sister. They have all enjoyed it and have become frequent customers here.

Went on a Saturday evening with our family of four. Seated with no wait and really only two other couples as customers. Service was friendly, helpful and sweet! My children have never eaten Thai so they ordered safe with the fried rice (which came out very hot and tasted great, we all agreed) while the adults got sweet and sour shrimp and shrimp with mixed vegetables. All tasted good. The steamed roll that came with dinner was very good. Opinions on the calamari appetizer were that it was just so-so. Nice light meal that leaves you full but not stuffed! The best part about this place is the prices! Decent prices for good food.

Yum!! Great food, great service, affordable. The decor is a little outdated but the place is cozy and the server/waitress/owner (?) was so friendly and sweet. We'll be back..... Soon!!

Come on, Yelp, let us have 1/2 stars. How tough can that be? :) Let me start of by saying that I am by NO means an expert on Thai food. Someone who is well versed in this cuisine might have some insights for us. We visited Thai Castle for lunch, our first visit today. We have to Thai restaurants that we like..Thai Orchid at 86th, just West of 69, and Thai Taste, at 86th and Allisonville. We were excited to see how Thai Castle compared to these two. First of all, the service was simply outstanding. And the owner/chef is simply a HOOT. You can hear him singing along to the radio at the top of his lungs from the kitchen. Slightly off key, but still...to hear such gusto in his singing was really something. We enjoyed that quite a lot. Our waitress was personable and friendly, and took very good care of us. Very high marks in the service area. I tried the Pineapple fried rice with beef. It was....OK. The beef was overcooked, and it wasn't very "pineapple-y". It was good, just not as good as I expected. I ordered it hot...Thai hot. The waitress said "Are you sure??" and I replied "Yes, I'm sure". I adore hot food. But, it was...less than medium. I was very disappointed in the spice/heat level. Holly had the Massaman curry, and she liked it quite a lot, but, like me, she was disappointed in the heat level. This has to be the mildest Thai food we've ever had. We both had an egg roll, that came with our lunch, she chose the soft and I chose the fried. She raved about hers, and I do believe that's the best darn egg roll I've EVER had. I can't say enough about it. Overall, I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5 on the food...just average. We'll certainly go back and try something else off of the menu. Service? 5 out of 5, no doubt about it.

Location was great and so was the food! The staff is super friendly as well. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 star is that the place is a little out dated in terms of decor. But definitely worth the money. (Very affordable)

You know, there is really nothing better than a home cooked meal from a Thai family and when you order they really make you feel like you're at home. The cook is always singing and talks to you from the kitchen and the waitress is constantly attending to you. As far as the food goes, it is pretty damn good Thai food. I can't speak to the authenticity, but it is as good as any Thai food I have ever had in the Midwest. I definitely recommend Thai Castle for everyone looking for a good home-cooked ethnic meal in Central Carmel.

The one thing about this place that keeps bringing me back is the Pineapple Chicken Fried Rice. It's fantastic. Peanuts, pineapple, rice cooked to perfection. Delicious. What's not fantastic is everything else on the menu. I have yet to try something else on the menu I like. The place itself is always empty when I've been so it's not really inviting to stay. I'd almost recommend it as a take out place. Food: 3/5 Location: 4/5 Service: 3/5

Just terrible. We are used to Thai Taste in Castleton where ingredients are fresh, the heat is deep rather than overt. The spring rolls (not fried) were tasty but otherwise we will never order from here again.

The food was so so. The pad Thai was gummy and tastes like it had been reheated. The soft Thai rolls were disgusting. Customer service was good.

Thai Castle is one if those out of sight places that you would quickly miss if you weren't forced to stop for a traffic light. We have passed by this intersection a hundred times and said we're going to have to stop here some time. Today, we stopped and had lunch since I was off work for the Memorial Day holiday. I love the decor and the atmosphere. The music is a track of covers of pop hits that sound very karaoke-ish. The most entertaining part is that the chef sings along with the songs! The guy knows what he likes...gotta give him credit for that! My husband and I ordered different lunch specials. He got beef pineapple fried rice (ordered Thai hot) with a salad and fried egg roll, and I got a curry (ordered medium heat) with soup and a soft spring roll. Our soup and salad was very basic. i enjoyed my soup quite a lot - a broth with a touch of hot pepper and cilantro. Rick says his crispy fried egg roll was the best one he'd ever eaten. The soft roll I had was very tasty also. The dipping sauce made it! It was hot and sweet. So far so good on our experience! We were hopeful for the entrees. As it turns out, they were only average. Rick's dish that was ordered Thai hot was not spiced as such. The curry was pretty good. Not the best I've ever tasted. After I spooned a little of the meat and sauce over my rice and tasted it, I decided to pour the whole bowl over the rice. That made a huge difference in the flavor. All the spices that were sitting in the sauce were now swimming with the rice on my plate - very tasty. The chef came out and thanked us personally for being there. He was full of energy and thanked us for being there. I would definitely go back, but I would definitely order a different dish from the menu.

I knew from yelp reviewers the food needed some kick, so I ordered it Medium spice. The servers were prompt and friendly. Unfortunately, the food was forgettable. I really wanted to like this place, and would have no problem going back but would not be inspired to return.

This review is for two different times. The crab rangoon didn't taste or look like it had any crab, just pieces of carrots. Also, the "cream cheese" didn't tast anything like cream cheese and was very yellow and was nearly liquid. The dinner portion of pad thai was average in taste but was the size of an appetizer. My boyfriend got a whole fish both times we went and that was a decent portion and good. On the second visit I got Thai Barbecue Chicken Breast. It was absolutely bone dry and again the portion was very small. In the description it described it as "grilled and marinated" which I assumed meant it was marinated in the barbecue sauce. No, the sauce came on the side and tasted like a standard garlic sauce. We mentioned the dryness to two of the servers. They both insisted it was supposed to be like that. One said it was the thai style and the other explained it was grilled overnight and served with the sauce the next day so it took out most of the moisture. It was inedible but they wouldn't take it back. The chicken I did eat had to be cut with a knife and chewed extensively. There was zero moisture left in the chicken. Afterwards it did not sit well in my stomach and remained that way for more than an hour after eating. They did give us half price on the chicken dish and promised that next time it would be better. This was of little consequence to us however. We won't be ordering that dish again nor do we plan on returning to the restaurant. Overall, unless you order the whole fish, the portions are small and hit or miss in the taste department.

Great spring rolls, good curry, wasn't wild about pad Thai. This is a cute little place and seems authentic, but it's not my favorite Thai spot.

Love the chef that shouts from the kitchen upon arrival and departure. What it lacks in frills, it's made up for in attentive service and great food. Highly recommend it.

UPDATE 2012.3.9 My girlfriend and I have been here to dinner twice. On both times, I got dishes in which a whole fish was cooked that were truly excellent in flavor, and the portions were good for the money. But there are also negatives that have dragged my rating down, and I am crossing this restaurant off my list of places to go to. First, the pad thai dinner portion was way too small. It seemed no bigger than the lunch portion, but of course it cost more. Second, they have the worst crab rangoon I've ever had (excepting dried-out crappers on cheap Chinese buffets--but that isn't even trying). It was like green liquid inside a tough rice-paper shell. The taste itself was not too bad (though not like typical crab rangoon at all), but the texture was really tough and unappealing. Truly an F on the report card. Third, we ordered a dish that was truly horrible (yes, worse than the crab rangoon above!): Chicken breast in Thai barbecue sauce. Here are were the problems: 1. The portion was very small. Even had it been an appetizer, I would have considered the size medium at best. But this was supposed to be a dinner portion. 2. Not dinner-like. It was just a chicken breast with no veggies or anything. It really belonged on the appetizer menu. 3. Name is misleading. There was nothing about this that seemed like "barbecue sauce." It seemed like it had been marinated in fish sauce or something like that, and there was some garlic chili sauce on the side. 4. The driest chicken I have ever eaten. Apparently it is marinated, then deep-fried (without any kind of breading), and then grilled. The serves said that it's supposed to be like that, and it's a "Thai thing." I don't want to be a philistine. I've lived in Japan and eaten (and loved) all *kinds* of dishes. But it stretches my imagination that this chicken breast was an example of excellent and authentic Thai cuisine. Even if that were the case, points 1-3 were enough reason to be upset. The restaurant would not take the chicken dish back, but the did give us half off the price of that one dish. Hmm. Hey, please the customer or lose the customer. They lost us. --- I've been slowly visiting all of Indy's Thai restaurants, and Thai Castle is now my second-favorite after Thai Spice. Actually, they are running neck and neck at this point. I had lunch here twice in the past week. First I got the pad thai. This is of course a classic dish, and I think it's a good one by which to understand a restaurant's approach, since it's so variable from place to place. Thai Castle's pad thai with beef was simply superb. The beef was medium-tender with an excellent grilled taste. The level of salty/sweet/sour was perfect. The texture of the noodles was also perfect. Just a really well-balanced dish. A+. Today I got the deep-fried whitefish with vegetables in Thai basil sauce. This dish really showed the skill and care of the chef (who is as lovably crazy as people here have described him--it's clear he truly loves his work!). The breading was light and crisp, the knifework on the veggies was super clean, and the sauce was to die for. A+ again. People in the reviews here have said the food was bland. I don't see that at all thus far. I ordered my food "hot," and it was not super hot but still hot. So if you like really hot Thai food, you might want to order yours "extra hot." Nevertheless, the seasoning and flavors overall were anything but bland. The soup and fried/steamed spring roll that come with lunch are quite good. I preferred the fried spring roll to the steamed; YMMV. The atmosphere is great, as people have said. It's cozy, and the vibe is good. There are a couple of downsides. The lunch portions are not huge. I was still a little hungry afterward. But the lunch prices are also quite low. Thai Spice gives you a little more food but also charges a little more. Thai Castle does not offer shrimp as an option with the lunch specials (except for a separate, more pricey shrimp and scallop dish), whereas Thai Spice does. I am going to have to try a few more dishes and see how big the dinner portions of food are (at Thai Spice, they are huge). But right now I am extremely impressed with Thai Castle overall.

This is one of our favorite work places to "lunk." It's fast, simple, good and a value for the cost. You get a soup, spring roll and your main course, then the dessert is typically a fruit. All of this for around $8. It's definitely mom and pop and you always hear some odd music, whether it's the chef singing or Lionel Richie on the tunes, but it definitely adds character to the place either way.

Great food and service. My husband has a wheat allergy and the staff is incredibly helpful in ensuring we order only the food he can eat. I always have concerns when we order from a staff that doesn't speak English as a first language. Fortunately this staff makes it easy and we've never had an issue. This is thai we can trust- and its delicious!

Great Food, Great Service! Perhaps a hidden gem in the area, the place wasn't packed (but we went at 2:00pm) however the food was outstanding and the Chef is really funny.

A chef that sings! That garners a star in it of itself! Somewhat small, but extremely welcoming family-owned restaurant. Yes, it's in a strip mall, and there's not too much in the way of ambiance, but the menu has plenty to choose from and my date (who spent 3+ months in S.E. Asia/Thailand) could testify the food reminded him greatly of his travels. The service and staff are the best part of this place for me--their family has been here for over 20 years and even though there isn't much English, the attentiveness (and singing...did I mention the chef sings?) is 4 star. It's never been very busy when I am over there, so hopefully with the upcoming opening of the Palladium business will pick up for this cozy joint.

I really love thai food, and this cute little restaurant is tucked away in Carmel. I have been 2 or 3 times now, and every time it has been very quiet and relaxing for 2 people on a date. I noticed a lot of people ordered take out while I ate (which is why I think it's so quiet inside). The lady who serves you is so polite and very quiet as well, but service is always wonderful. Quick and efficient. Affordable and the best place to grab thai food on the north side of Indy.

Maybe I'm eating at a different restaurant than the rest of these reviews but I have always had a great meal here. Small friendly with a crazy singing chef, who, by the way, will sing requests. Maybe it's that I find a good dish and always order the same thing!! At times service has been slow but always with a smile. Not much decor but hey who cares I'm here to eat not sight see!! Anyway I love the number 1.25 take out green peppers and add squid comes with soup and salad or soft roll. I like it extremely hot so they cannot put enough heat on my food but it is always great. I recommend trying this little "Joint" if nothing else to see a crazy little guy from Seoul sing Quanta remerra!! Pretty freaking funny!

Carmel's best hidden jewel! An incredibly authentic place for the discriminating palate on Thai cuisine yet, the most relaxed atmosphere! The first time strolling in on a Saturday afternoon, I immediately notice this extremely quaint ambience of what one would expect if they were actually in Thailand! I'm a huge supporter of privately owned businesses.. (restaurants, especially)... and I really fell in love with this place! I'm a stickler for really good PAD THAI! (Rice noodles with peanut sauce and choice spices)! I've become so fond of it here that when I walk in now, the owner walks up and gives me this higher than normal toned "Heyyyyyy... How you doin' todayyyyy?" And I love it! Every item is fresh to order, very hot (temp) and DELICIOUS! Great place to take a date; awesome place to enjoy a nice relaxed conversation w/o the distractions of kids and definitely a place for something different! ENJOY!

I would agree with previous poster. It's good to have a Thai restaurant in town but it seemed as though it was a bit toned down. I had take out so I cannot comment on the dining experience. I would try it again and urge you do so too!

  • Rachel L.

Family-owned restaurant in a small strip mall. Acceptable but nothing memorable. Bland food. Maybe the spicy flavors are toned down for Midwestern tastes?

    (2)
  • Chris E.

There's not much flavor to speak of. Their 'mild' translated to bland, and 'hot' needed 4 spoonful of chili sauce. Salt was all I could taste in the red curry dish. The Thai 'gravy' in their fat rice noodle and vegetables was essentially diluted shrimp paste with corn starch, nothing Thai about that. I like my Thai food exciting but all I got was disappointment. The only redeeming item was the steamed spring roll, sweet and tangy, maybe next time when I go back, if I ever go back, I'll just get a dozen of those and that's that....and the wait staff was attentive and friendly.

    (2)
  • David G.

This is one of my favorite Thai places in town. Service is always outstanding. The fish dishes are excellent. The fat cap on the duck breast is rendered perfectly giving you a crispy skin with the layer of fat. The spice level is on the milder side. Order up one level of what you normally get.

    (5)
  • Lily E.

The restaurant is rather tiny and the main man who is the waiter also helps make the food and is the cashier. I didn't expect much from it at first, but then I had to pad Thai noodles- and they were excellent. You can choose between mild, medium or spicy for the seasoning. Again, simply amazing noodles. The man in charge has very bad English and is kind of weird but is so funny and nice that everyone seemed to like him. In the end, he brought us a tiny slice of free cheesecake! It was great. I definitely recommend it and will be going back.

    (4)
  • David O.

Won't be going back. Had the red curry, and it was bland. Friend had the Thai Basil Fried Rice: also bland. The "soft egg roll" would have been better served cold, though this would not have fixed its fatal flaw: It was bland. This might pass for good Thai food in Carmel, but if you are in Central or Southern Indiana, head for My Thai, the best Thai you'll find around here.

  • Adrienne G.

I love Thai food and when I found out that there was a Thai restaurant within 5 minutes of my place, I had to try it. This place sits in a quiet strip mall and you wouldn't know its there unless you really looked. The decor is quiet and understated but the food was the main attraction. I had the Eggplant with Chicken in a basil sauce (served medium-hot) and it was delicious! I think their spice levels are on par with other Thia places I have been. Service was great and prices are average. Dinner for two was around $25. I will be back!

  • Jeff R.

I love good Thai in hole in the wall places. As I travel I seek out these types of places and they rarely let me down. The red curry was excellent; not as spicy as I prefer but it is probably toned down for the Midwest, even though I had the hottest. The chicken satay was good but likely a mass produced peanut sauce. I wish I had Thai Castle in my backyard. Don't expect ambience and tip top service, just good food, good value, and service to please the diner.

  • Greg F.

Bland. Almost any Thai I have tried in Indy is better, and def not like Thai Spice on the southside, which is great. I ordered basic Pad Thai because we didnt have much time. I asked for hot, and it wouldn't pass for mild at Siam Square. My wife ordered the Tom Yum soup. It was hot watered, uncooked mushrooms, 2 hot house tomatoes, and 2 hard lemongrass strands. Bland. Place is also dirty. Maybe that is the authentic part.

I'm not huge on thia but this place is great! The staff is super nice and the food is amazing ! If you're in the carmel area i would totally recommend. They have decent prices and the amount of food you get is enough for lunch the next day .
