I had never been to MCL although I've seen it many times. After reading reviews about it being like "mom's home cooking" I definitely thought I'd give it a try. Well, if you are one of the folks who thinks this is like "mom's home cooking" then I have some terrible news for you. Your mother didn't make her food from scratch. She microwaved some Banquet Frozen Fried Chicken for you, topped her spaghetti noodles with Ragu brand spaghetti sauce, mixed up some Hungry Jack instant mashed potatoes for you, made you some generic brand mac & cheese (she didn't even use Kraft brand mac & cheese), and for dessert you get a slice of store bought pie. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I know that sounds harsh but those are the exact flavors that the food reminded me of. Now I know what you're thinking. Based on my picture my parents have got to be from another country so there's no way I would know what "real American home cooking" tastes like. Well my friend, that's where you're wrong. Precisely because my parents are from the Philippines, when they wanted to serve us "American" food it was Banquet Frozen Fried Chicken, spaghetti with Ragu brand sauce, instant mashed potatoes, generic brand mac & cheese, and store bought desserts. So I'm very familiar with the taste of boxed, store bought food. When I have had great "homemade" food the quality and flavor were instantly evident. A restaurant that comes to mind is Marie Callendar's. (Don't think they have a Marie Callendar's in Indy.) That's what I thought I'd be getting here. Unfortunately, the quality is much, much lower. Now, I'm not saying the food was bad. Like I said, I grew up eating food like this. But to say it's "delicious" is a stretch. I think it's fitting to call this "cafeteria food". Sorry if that sounds mean, it's just really a fitting description of the flavor and quality you get here. I will say that the service here was excellent. They were all very kind and accommodating. I came on a busy night and even though they were slammed they addressed everyone with a friendly, "Hello!" and a, "I'm sorry for the wait, I'll be right with you." And they were quick to get my order for me. So unfortunately, I walk away disappointed. Nothing about this visit makes me want to come back. I mean, besides...if I wanted this kinda food I could just go down to the grocery store, stop by the frozen food section and make this stuff myself.

I crave comfort food and "home cooking" a lot, but let's be honest, my mother did not cook like this! I love MCL! Some of my friends make fun of me and say it's for the elderly, but I don't care. Other friends know how yummy it is and when I check in, they drool! They have THE best beef and turkey manhattans, and freshly baked pies (coconut cream is one of my favorites)! They prepare their foods fresh daily with mostly wholesome ingredients, and it's a cafeteria so you can choose what you like. Oh, their cinnamon rolls are big & awesome as well! It may be a little pricey (because things are al a carte & I tend to get carried away) but they have value plates where you can get a reduced portion of many entrees and a couple sides and bread item. They also have a veggie-plate combo that comes with three hot side-items, bread and a drink. Give it a try!

C'mon, admit it. Every once in a while you crave a little mom's home cooking. Sometimes she knocked it out of the park, others not so much. But you had your faves and she fixed it for you whenever you asked - or she knew you were coming over. That's what MCL is to me and for half the price of Shapiro's. So I roll in to get one of my standard faves: beef manhattan coupled w/ their most excellent pecan pie - better than Mrs. Wicks by a mile - AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BOTH. It's nearly the only thing I get now because it ticks all the boxes! I crave it from time to time. One of my buds (diabetic) loves their no sugar added blueberry pie. I've only got an hour for lunch total. I can drive over, roll in, get my order without much of a wait, snarf and be back in my office in less than 60. It's always quiet at lunch and I skew the demographic 20 yrs younger for 'em!

I know plenty of people wouldn't dream of eating here because it's a cafeteria. But, having survived on MCL food when I was an undergrad down in Bloomington, IN, I am still a fan. The truth is, if you can bet beyond the cafeteria stigma - carrying your food on a plastic tray to a table, etc. - this is a good place to grab a decent meal when you've forgotten to plan ahead at home. For my extended family this is a "go to" place because we have "near vegetarians," "no veggies at all" and everything in-between eaters that all have to be satisfied when we get together. It's also one of the few places that's ready to go with a full menu for the older folks among us who sometimes want to eat well before 6pm. Also good for carryout when the chef is under the weather...hint, hint. Besides, I love their Irani brand iced tea :-). Cobb salads and most of the veggies here are a safe bet, too. In the end, MCL food reminds me of what mom cooked growing up - back in the days when the entire family gathered for dinner.

Typical cafeteria food. Nothing that really knocked my socks off. Just met a friend here, as it was a convenient spot to meet. I will say that the person who was put in charge of taking care of our table was nearly invisible - and not in a good way. We had to go get our own drink refills the whole time, we got our own butter, our own boxes and everything. Each time we'd come back - she'd spot that we had to do all of this ourself and she'd apologize all over herself, but the restaurant was nearly empty while we were there. Not really any good reason for poor service.

We went tonight knowing it was a cafeteria and having read the reviews which were mixed at best. but thought a meat and veggies night was in order and how bad could it be... it was packed with customers (95% elderly) The line was loaded with lots of good looking choices and we all ordered and the cost was pretty reasonable - $32 for a family (2 adults and 2 kids). After that it was down hill. Fried chicken was dry and the breading tasted pasty. The cooked spinach was awful, bitter and uneatable. My wife's mac and cheese was bland and tasted like it came from a kraft box instant version. The roll my son got was hard as a brick it was so stale but at the same time soggy on the bottom from god knows what... (it was on its own plate, so not from juice of other food) my daughter liked her corn on the cob and the green beans were over salted but tolerable. My wife had the pie and my son had jello. both of which were too sweet. almost too sweet to be enjoyable or easy to eat. I have to assume that the old folks there are there because it is cheap, you do not have to tip anyone and the food is bland or over salted. we will not be back. Way too many really great local restaurants all around the area, to ever need to go there again.
