This was the place where I ate my first burger ever, in my life. As a German immigrant, I never had a desire to try traditional American food, and something about round, pressed meat patties turned me off. However, my Elmhurst-native boyfriend insisted that I try a burger, and so off Hamburger Heaven we went. The place had kind of a nice retro feel, with outside seating. The cheeseburger I ordered was actually quite tasty, even though I was hesitant to eat it. All in all, it convinced me to keep eating and finding new burgers to try, so the mission was a success. I've loved them ever since.

Experience tells me that when you are hungry and drive by a rundown shack on the side of the road called Hamburger Heaven, you stop immediately and have lunch. No matter how long you have to wait in line. Hamburgers are admittedly McDonalds-esque, but somehow not nasty? Thin patties with special sauce and squishy bread. I added olives as any olive-lover would, but it just made the burger super salty and that's it. Cheese fries are of the Kringle-cut and fake cheese variety. Root beer is tasty! Super smooth and vanilla-y. I love places like this for the charming experience and the nice people who run this business that's been around forever (since 1948). It makes me happy to patronize businesses like this but admittedly, better burgers are found elsewhere.

Saw a sign for "root beer" and had to stop! I have to say, the location of this joint is not ideal. Getting in and out of the parking lot is definitely an ordeal. The only things we ordered were root beer floats and onion rings... What a great combo ;). The onion rings were very uniformly shaped and pretty flavorless. I wouldn't get them again. The floats were delicious! Yummy soft serve ice cream dumped in a cup of root beer. We will definitely be returning for more floats!

This is an Elmhurst icon. Is it great, not really, but that doesn't mean you should try it. The reviews are mixed. I know some people who love it. A friend who comes in from California (went to Elmhurst College) loves to stop here when she's back in town. Since, I think there are better burgers in town I generally get the corn dog. Yes, that's right, the corn dog. I'm like 99% sure this is the only place in town where you can get one. Margin of error - plus or minus 100%. Also, I occasionally get the butterscotch malt. As Yoda might say, "Healthy, not is place for diet." Worst bathroom in Elmhurst according to my son. As of this writing there are ninety-six restaurants in Elmhurst. I plan on eating at, and reviewing, every one. Follow me on Yelp!

Rude staff! I had my sleeping son in the car but had promised my daughter a cone. She was not feeling well and had her heart set on it so I parked and hurried over to get her a cone. I apparently stood at the pickup window - which is not marked as such - and when they opened the window they told me I had to go back to the other side and get back in line. A cone is a quick order - why not just take it? Why not mark the window as pickup and orders? Ridiculous...won't be going back anytime soon.

Decent food. Although the fries are the simple thick crinkle cut fries. My problem is that they don't wear gloves. We got two small shakes, 2 burgers and 2 fries and it came out to $22.99. Good coy stoner service tho.

  • Danielle B.

Very underwhelming. The burgers were super greasy and the fries/onion rings were just bland. Cute location but probably won't go back.

Absolutely the worst burger experience of my life. The dog Le cheeseburger was like 4 bucks and tasted much cheaper than a dollar menu double cheeseburger from burger king. Definitely poor quality. I also ordered the onion rings which tasted like cardboard. They were not only frozen but of the utmost poor quality as well. They tastes like long john silvers cheapo onion rings. My wife ordered a malt and that tasted fantastic. Stay away from the burgers and fried food....I warned you

We have lived in Elmhurst for 12 years and finally got a chance to go to Hamburger Heaven. I honestly do not know how this place has stayed in business so long, This was our first visit (and last) today. I got the "famous double decker hamburger with olives", fries, root beer float. Husband got Italian beef and chocolate shake. A customer waiting for her order told me that the Big Mac is modeled after this double decker. I said I certainly hoped it was better. It was not! The burger patties were those pathetic frozen cheap hamburger ones - and cooked more wet and grey then browned nicely. Their sauce was too gloopy. The Big Mac has better sauce, cheese, onions, pickles - much better AND I HATE MCDONALD's generally. Hamb Heaven's fries were typical crinkly cut frozen and fried - and not enough. The root beer float was totally flat - no fizz in the root beer. The It Beef was okay, but it probably was made by Sysco; the chocolate malt was a chocolate shake. DO NOT BOTHER going here. Maybe nostaligia is keeping it going cuz it sho ain't the food. Go anywhere but here - Portillo's has great burgers. Even McD's are better.

Stopped last night for the first time in probably 25 years. This place ain't what it once was, that's for sure. Their burger patties are vanishingly small. Fries leave a greasy taste in your mouth. It'll be another 25 yrs before I go back. I should have gone to Culver's!

just the signage and old skool energy seemed so promising of wayback machine goodness, kids running around screaming for ice cream, local couples molesting each others backsides while waiting for their fried goodness, smiley people behind the counters calling out more orders... the weather was warm, the sun shined and the air smelled right to consume a taste of heaven. alas it was for not. as the rootbeer float was tasty, but not as thick and rich as you would hope from a burger heaven. Onion rings looked processed and similar to burger king style rings all uniform and tasting more of onion product rather than onions as they do at fitz's with their version more fresh cut and different sized. the burgers...I passed as these 2 items failed to draw me into sitting in the square for the final pitch and possible out. hopefully heaven is better than this, as this place would make a better purgatory burger delight stop for those who enjoy a sinful indulgence once in a while

    (3)
  • Dave W.

Unimpressive. Overpriced. Overrated. Burger lacked flavor and the the bread to meat ratio was 10:1. Onion rings were out of a premade bag. Same with fries. Cheese sauce was good. Shake was good. For $17 bucks I won't be back any time soon.

Unique place yes...A good place to eat no. This place over charges for what is basically fast food. It has been at this location forever and is part of the Elmhurst landscape. It is better than going to dairy Queen so that is saying something but not really much.

Worth it! A lot of people seem to have great childhood memories of Hamburger Heaven which adds to it's charm. I don't (because I wasn't introduced to it until recently), but I can say I do like the food very much and would happily give them repeat business!

  • Kevin W.

One of my favorite restaurants in the world...i indeed do have plenty of great childhood memories of bike riding to hamburger heaven and getting fantastic chocolate shakes, hamburgers, etc. The burgers do taste a bit like a big mac, but better... I would suggest the root beer...it has been the same root beer since 1940's and WOW a great root beer float. There is ok parking, kind of hard to get out of... Go here and induldge in a large shake and a few corn dogs...It is worth the tae bo video and what not...

I'm a huge hot dog and burger joint fan and am always looking for the next best thing. I've been driving past this location for years and finally got the chance to stop for a bite with my wife. I should have kept going. We ordered a few hot dogs, cheese fries, and root beer. The skinny dogs were overloaded with mustard and bad relish, fries were not fresh, and the root beer was warm, flat and watery. I anticipated the dogs not being anything special by the lackluster demeanor of the staff, but the root beer is their claim to fame! I expected much better. I don't mind paying the price for good food, but this was overpriced garbage. I realize every place has it's off days, and opefully this is not the norm, but after this experience, I'm not willing to try it again.

Haven't eaten here in over 20 years but I used to love the food here. Great burgers and root beer floats. I love the drive thru.

I do not understand how this place has only 3 1/2 stars. I have been going here since I was little, and it is my all time favorite burger joint. Best burgers and, seriously the best root beer ever! It is so creamy and delicious...mmm. Everyone needs to go here, not one bad thing on the menu. Now I want some! Looks like I will be makin' a trip to the suburbs this weekend.

The price of the food doesn't justify its mediocrity; however, the shakes are spot on.

This place is Awesome. Burgers are pretty dang good. love the toppings, especially the sauce. If you're in the area I would definetly go eat there, but wouldn't go out of my way just to go there. Root beer is real good too. Everytime I go, i get a burger, root beer, and onion rings. I think most people like the old school feel that this place gives, but its still good food.

a beacon of hope in a land of chain restaurants and strip malls. i saw hamburger heaven on the way back to the city after an evening in the burbs and had a sudden craving for soft serve... which i was certain they would have. this is one of those places that just oozes nostalgic charm. you order at the window and you eat your food at one of the many sticky picnic tables around the back. the menu is limited but has basically all you'd ever want from a hamburger stand. i had a small swirl cone and my mans had a root beer (apparently a specialty). the cone was good (how could it not be?), but the root beer had no ice! i assume it was intentional, but odd none the less.

My husband and I were on a historic food tour in and around Chicago today. We specifically stopped at Hamburger Heaven for some Richardson's root beer. I was disappointed as I also found the rootbeer to be weak and watery (as another post states). The rootbeer at rainbow cone is much more flavorful. I cannot comment on the food because we did not eat anything here. The staff was friendly.

  • Tim Y.

I can't believe I'm the first to review the Heaven, and I'm sure I won't be the last! They've been around forever (my mother used to go there as a kid) and for good reason! Everything here is great. The burgers are fantastic and get me to break my no-fast-food diet every so often. There's a reason people from out of town who know about this place go out of their way to make a stop. Doesn't look like much from the outside and they're not open year-round, but it's well worth it. Cheap, good food with plenty of charm. Nothing beats it!

Nothing special.......your basic fried foods, hamburgers, and ice cream.

My parents took us to Hamburger Heaven back in the 1950's as a special treat and I always looked forward to their mouthwatering double cheeseburgers and we'd watch them being assembled through the side window into the kitchen. Wow. That was 50 years ago. God Bless em for staying in business with little change, but in my return visits (about twice a year...originally to return for delight and now to see if somehow they may have fixed the problems) I've been consistently disappointed. The mantra of any restaurant, even a dinky dive like this one, should be FRESH. Consistently, the buns served exhibit a staleness, even though they're run through a litle toaster. The biggest disappointment is their craft Root Beer (inexplicably served without ice, unless specifically asked for) which about 50% of the time tastes "off," and sometimes downright "skunky." Oh, I'll continue to go back once or twice a year and reminesce, but I hope that the operators take a close look at the product and realize that about 2 minutes of effort and $2 of quality increase could put them on the map again. I can hope

  • Amanda D.

Sub-par. The food is just ok for the price, better to go to portillos, you dont have to wait outside, the price points are similar and the food is much better. As well i have never had a worse chocolate shake in my life

I heard of this place like it was Mecca for like a decade before I actually went there, All I can say is "not bad". The root beer floats were actually worth praise , I loved em , the burgers ... I've had at least a dozen better. I have been there a few times because of said root beer floats, different strokes I guess. Stop by if you want a float , eat the burger , not bad , maybe you'll like it more than I did. Can't bash the place , it just got the hard sell by a few friends and local celebrities , and it didn't really live up to my expectations. Fries were OK , I don't really have anything else to add.

  • Tanya L.

I used to intern down the street from this place. From what I can remember, they had a fantastic chocolate milkshake and nicely seasoned fries. I would DIE for a t-shirt from this place: it is guaranteed to be an absolute revolt against vegetarianism. A smiley faced burger picture with wings on the shirt made me laugh hysterically. I think I gave this place an extra star for their silly emblem.

Not really a review but I am THRILLED to know this place is still open. Family always went here as a kid (in the '60's). I loved the sauce on the burgers and hopefully it's still the same. Will be sure to stop by the next time I'm back home from MI.

The double cheeseburger is delicious. The root beer float is awesome. The cones are tasty and the service is good. I wish they had a larger selection of ice cream.

I am 32, and I worked here when I was 16. The owner was bonkers when I worked here....wouldn't let us even go outside for fear that the staff would leave and never come back and banished hair spray (in 1992!!!!) because of his "allergies". However, from what I remember 15 years ago the burgers were bomb, as were the shakes. When I make it home for a visit, i dig on the nostalgia of H.H! And,, yes, I used to own the awesome tee-shirt! ;)

Jim's Hamburger Heaven, one of the best drive in burger joints ever. I first discovered this place when I was 8 years old, my mother and I were desperately hungry and came here and instantly got hooked. I still till this day love this place, I come here at least once or twice a week after a great workout session. The burgers are amazing literally "Heaven" fits the burger right because that's what I feel with one bite. Honestly recommend it and prices ain't too shabby. If you're stil reading go on and get yourself a double decker fool!

  • Susan B.

This summer is the first time we have tried Hamburger Heaven and I wish we would have tried it sooner! Yeah, they don't have thick burger patties but I like that. The burgers here almost taste like In-N-Out burgers to me, not a 100% match but close enough. I usually get the double burger and it is pretty filling. The cheese fries are amazing. My husband tried the beef sandwich and that was really good too although I will stick with the burgers going forward. Root beer can't be missed! The first time we ordered we were given root beer floats by accident and they were super tasty and highly recommended. Very reasonably priced, outdoor seating only.

  • Ryan T.

The only reason I could really see for frequenting this place is if it is for nostalgia purposes. I've been there a handful of times now mostly because I like the feel of a drive in and I desperately want it to be good. The chicken fingers are actually really good. Everything else is pretty much awful. Prices are actually pretty unreasonable too considering the quantity and quality of food. Unless there is some kind of emotional attachment or you really want low quality food for a high price I would just avoid this place. If you find yourself there get the chicken fingers. But the again KFC is right down the road.

It probably didn't hurt that I ate here for lunch on a Friday, on what was arguably the nicest day of 2014 (so far). The excellent root beer, the hefty portion of fries, and what I felt was a delicious cheeseburger made for one happy Yelp reviewer. Yes, their signature 'double-decker' burger is in many ways like a Big Mac, but it's not processed the same way that a corporate giant like Mickey D's would. This place has been around since 1948 (just a few years after WWII), and not much has changed since. Everything is a-la-carte, and prices are very reasonable. The special sauce on the burgers gives it a certain 'je ne sais quoi' that I loved. SPOILER ALERT: the special sauce is essentially honey mustard+tartar sauce/1000 island dressing. 4 1/2 stars for the experience. BUT WAIT! Bonus star awarded for: sheer persistence in the face of adversity. Hamburger Heaven has endured being in business for decades despite threats (and significant financial compensation, I'm sure) from Elmhurst to raze the location, and build something new on its corner lot.....probably another fucking Walgreens or Chik-Fil-A. But nope, they gave the big 'up yours' to the township and continued running a little ma-and-pa burger stand on a slice of prime North Ave & York Road real estate. These guys get an extra star (we're up to 5.5 stars now) for being just --that-- stubborn. It's a must-go during the summer months. On behalf of all the kids who will enjoy a soft serve cone here on an early August evening after a little league baseball game..... For all the junior high school couples that'll come here on a first date because it's fun and easygoing and it's all they can afford..... For all the old folks who'll come back to Hamburger Heaven to relive simpler times and remind them of the days when they were in middle school..... ....I thank you for not caving in and selling. The appreciation shows in the tens of thousands of smiles that'll you see here between now and October.

  • Bill H.

I wanted to like this place, has a certain kitch appeal, but the root beer was flat and had a bad aftertaste. The hamburger was mediocre at best I kinda wish it was more like a slider really. I'm not kidding a whopper Junior tastes about like this reg burger.

  • Mopsie B.

The place is cute and I wanted to love it but...the ice cream was standard soft-serve. It actually tasted like water to me. Way too much of it in a "small" cone. My husband got a chocolate shake- he said it was awful. Dairy Queen has a much better taste and consistency but this is still a cute little neighborhood spot. And it's local, so...Weirdly, they don't post what they have available in terms of ice cream. I think the flavors are basically vanilla and chocolate. Not sure what the shake flavors are.

Horrible place never eating there again! My wife and I had some pizza at papa johns right around the corner and we decided to have some ice cream and a few appetizers from here, we haven't finished all our pizza and took the rest of it in a box with us. After we ordered our food we sat down and started to eat and out of nowhere the owner comes up to us and tells us we have to leave because we have papa johns pizza with us, he went on saying how we can't eat pizza here (even tho we weren't) so we have to leave because we brought in pizza! And on top of it all they forgot to give us our ice cream! Went up got my ice cream had to show a receipt. Horrible place! They had us walking away with ice cream a paper bag and a pizza, by the time we got to the car it had melted all over my hands and the food was cold, very uncomfortable to walk with a pizza box and ice cream. Ruined my night completely just the worst hospitality ever save your money and go somewhere where they don't kick you out for having your own stuff!

Let me start by saying that I've been going here since I was a kid, and the food is just as great as it was back then. The staff here is so nice, and the service is quick and efficient. This is always my first stop when the weather gets warm. So nostalgic!

Amazing old fashioned burger stand that marks the start of summer. It's a staple in our family. The Olive Burger is out of this world. Don't forget to try the ON TAP Root Beer!!!

First time here. Burgers are the best. Root beer is the best !!!

  • Judith B.

I drove by this place a million times saying to myself " I need to try them one day." As soon as the weather turns nice, there's a line for their fresh, home-style burgers. Don't expect a gourmet burger. These are typical burgers of greasy burger joint type places, but not as greasy. Fries are good and shakes are too. I want to try their homemade root beer. Seems to be a fan favorite! Delicious food, nice staff, quick service and fun location

  • Landon B.

Definitely love this place. Their burger is fantastic. The sauce on it is unbelievable. The meal really fills you up. Great fries. And how could you forget about the root beer. Its a must when visiting. I definitely recommend this place.

  • Glen M.

My dad took me here when I was about 7 and I've been an occasional customer for over 40 years! I love the root beer ! Shakes are great too but the burgers are the best! Prices are reasonable too!

  • Naomi S.

Really it's only good for nostalgia. Burgers are like over priced big macs. Fries are ok. Malts are good, but if you screw those up you're in bug trouble. Staff is always friendly, line is always ridiculous and waiting by North and York is uncomfortable. Seriously save yourself the money and the wait and just go to McDonald's.

On the corner of North Avenue and York Road in Elmhurst sits a building that harkens back to days long before I was born. This 40s/50s style corner eatery brightly advertises Root beer, Ice Cream and Hamburgers. Over the years I've stopped here a handful of times and tried a variety of items so I'd like to take some time and cover not just what I had on my most recent visit. But also things I've had on previous visits. First off, since it's called Hamburger Heaven let's go over the hamburger. Well, it's not exactly heavenly, in fact It reminds me a lot of McDonalds burger. The double decker burger here is a lot like a big mac. It's a thin patty double cheeseburger with a piece of bread in the middle. It wasn't bad, but definitely different than one might expect to see from a mom and pop fast food joint. Next off is the hot dog/red hot. The hot dog here is served on a somewhat dry non-poppy seed bun. The sausage itself was skinless and well heated. There was no pickle slice or spear included. It had long slices of onion rather than chopped onions as found on most Chicago area hot dogs. The application of mustard and relish was fine and both were suitable brands for this type of dog. There were also quite a few sport peppers on the dog which added a good amount of heat. Simply put, this was an average hot dog. Since they advertise it right on the top of the building, the next thing to cover here is the Root Beer. The root beer had a flavorful body, not a lot of froth and not a lot of bite. I liked it, it's definitely better than most canned or bottled root beer. Finally I'll cover the ice cream here. I've had both an ice cream cone and a shake here. The ice cream here is fairly run of the mill soft serve. But on a hot day in downtown Elmhurst it was inecpensive and hit the spot. The milkshake was quite thick and was more ice cream than milk. Overall I thought it was a pretty good milkshake and the cone was decent and you get quite a bit of ice cream on that cone for the money (easily double a McDonalds cone, so the value is there). Overall, I like Hamburger Heaven, it has a wonderful late 40s early 50s era look to it. It's a neat place to visit and has a fantastic charm to the building and grounds itself. The Root Beer and ice cream make it worth visiting but the regular food isn't anything special. Overall, I'm going to give Hamburger Heaven three stars. It's worth visiting but nothing spectacular.

I was driving by and saw the big sign that pulls you in. The one about the root beer. It is homemade. After checking the reviews, I decided to try the root beer float. It was pretty good. After reading the reviews, I did not want to chance anything else. I've attached the picture of their root beer keg and the drink itself.

  • John H.

Here on business. A very pedestrian burger. They used what amounts to a Costco beef patty. Pretty pathetic. The root beer didn't come with any ice & was flat. No love or care went into the burger. Not gonna go back here.

  • Mike W.

Classic! I love it and hope it never goes away. I'm moving out of state but will always remember HH. This became my favorite place for a treat...double cheeseburger with everything, cheese fries and chocolate malt. LOVE IT.

Very disappointed. My friend and I drove by the a lots of times and like many thought we should try it. I think their condiments are few no grilled onions no mayo crazy. My burger was dry and the fries. Were good I also thought there for sure they would have diet root beer!! For goodness sake they make the root beer themselves. My friend had a large root beer thinking that had to be delicious nope it was watery and he has had much better. No sorry guys don't like leaving bad reports but I don't like my yelp friends to buy bad food and waste their money Oh BREN thanks for lunch!

  • Mike M.

I was passing this place and though it looked vintage so I figured I'd give it a try. There was a long line which was a good sign. Good food, super cheap prices, and friendly girl at the counter. If I'm ever up in this area again I would find time to stop and eat.

  • Bart S.

I like the milk shakes at Hamburger Heaven, that's about it though. I have had the soft serve in the past ..it is no better or worse than what you get at Dairy Queen. I would give 4 stars for the milk shake, but must stick with 2 stars, this place is closed on Sunday's! Life must be good for the owners. they are only open half the year, and then close on Sunday's. .. The place is a throw back to another time, I like that, but really think it's only average at best.

I used to live in elmhurst for 25 years, moved out 2 years ago, but this place is amazing! Food is always great, although there burgers have gotten a little smaller than they were but still great. Whenever i come visit my family in elmhurst i always try to make my way here. Everything on the menu i recommend you wont be disappointed.

Round two. We came here after awful sushi nest experience. Pretty god shake, a little heavy on the Choco flavor. Really solid burger, basic, classic.

Found this place by accident when I walked right past it. Definitely a great place to stop for a quick burger and fries. Will definitely go back if I'm in the area. Very old school charm and appeal.

A 5 star all day long for being exactly the place you think it is- a GREAT greasy burger joint and lazy summer street corner hangout. No inside seating, this is strictly Old fashioned walk up, order, slide over and grab place. Eat in your car, take it home or best yet, sit around the patio tables with a twist cone or awesome thick shake. Childhood memories of this place make all negative reviews invalid to me- it's just... Heaven.

So if you love burgers or root beer or authentic Chicago folksiness you gotta get over to Jim's Hamburger Heaven. It tastes like a really great homemade burger. You gotta try it.

Hamburger Heaven is a great place to experience. A summertime go-to instead of McDonald's or Portillos. Their food is greasy and there floats are great! Inexpensive and a night time treat why not at least try it once? If you're just looking for good tasting food and a classic place to go take a visit!

  • Amanda W.

Hamburger Heaven is a great place if you want a cheap burger and amazing shakes and malts. Located on the corner of North Ave and York Rd, it's usually fairly busy. I absolutely LOVE their milkshakes. The root beer shake is the way to go! You get a very good potion for the price, and the shakes are extremely creamy and thick. If you are craving ice cream or root beer, grab one! I had the fried shrooms, and they were a little on the "too greasy" side, but they were very good. A generous portion for the price. The cheeseburger comes with 2 patties, and all the fixings. The burger to me wasn't anything special. It was very bland, but a definite quick cure for my hunger blues. The people are very friendly and the wait times are fast. They offer picnic tables outside with a view of the roadways. All in all, Hamburger Heaven will be seeing me again just because of the yummy milkshakes!

I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now and finally got my chance earlier this week. The double cheeseburger was really good - it reminded me of a Big Mac from the 80s (because they were bigger and tastier back then) minus the special sauce. Hamburger Heaven puts their own special sauce on their burgers which is a pale yellow (mayo mixed with a little mustard perhaps???, although mild as I didn't taste much mustard) and really compliments the burger. Their crinkle cut fries are damn good too. I know we'll be back again sometime this summer. P.S. I should have snagged a pic of the food but it was so good I just inhaled it instead.

Love the burgers here. They don't taste like others - for me, they are similar to the Fatburger burgers in Vegas (not the ones that are/ were in IL - they weren't the same) and that is the best thing about them. The regular burgers are two patties but they are not an excessive amount of food. The olive burger is a very good thing. Lots of yummy green olives and they seem to have fixed the problem with the bun getting too wet and falling apart on those so yay for that. Tasty fries, especially when they are fresh. And a lot of people love the rootbeer but it, too, has to be fresh in order for it to be really good. Sometimes it seems like it might have been sitting out for a while. They're only open for the nicer months of the year but if you're driving/ riding/ walking by and they are open, you should stop and have a snack.

Mediocre. I ordered a chicken sammy and it was bland and dry. I will say though, I've had a burger here in the past and it wasn't bad. (Thats the only reason they get two stars). Shame on me for trying a chicken Sammy at HAMBURGER heaven. Ha

We are constantly driving by this burger place that looks appealing (I love hole in the wall joints) and loved the name! After a while, we decided to finallly give it a try. Hmmm...yeah, not everything I guess I thought it could be? Burgers are mediocre. Shakes were okay. Fries were meh. Only thing I DID enjoy - the home made root beer. I wish they did a little something more..flavorful?

Burger-frozen patty not good! Hot dog is a disgrace the smallest lamest dog I have ever eaten! The rootbeer was flat and not great. And the only thing I would recommend was the chicken strips my son had. Service was super slow and to make matters worse the people working there have attitude!!!

Hamburgers here are not so heavenly! I've been living in town for several years now and finally decided to get my butt out of the car and give this joint a whirl. I love these old mom and pop places that hardly exist anymore so I thought it had to be good since it's still around, right? Wrong. I was so let down in the burger department. It sort of resembles that of a Big Mac, but the Big Mac (gasp) is probably tastier. Fries were also lackluster. On that note, the root beer was good as well as the soft serve!

One of the best burgers I've ever had. Rumored to have been the burger that spawned the Big Mac. Great place to catch a bite to eat. Loved it.

The star of this place in my opinion is the double cheeseburger. I have been eating here for over 40 years and have learned that you must order it with "extra mix" which is what they call their "secret sauce". I live nearby and have their phone number on my speed dial. I'm not a big root beer fan so I can't comment on it. Also, have never tried their fries. if I am hungry enough for fries, I just order a second burger.

Did not much care for the burger nor the Root Beer.. The burger left me feeling that I would have been better off at Mcdonald's (no taste) The root beer was flat and not anywhere should be declared great!!! :( waste of time and money will not stop again...

I stopped by here when there was construction on North and York a month or so ago. Worst Italian Beef ever. Dry, tasteless beef. Tasteless, stale bread. Small portions, especially for the price. Non-existent cheese. Will not be visiting here again. The reason why I'm not rating this place 1 star is because the service wasn't horrible.

The reason I love spring and the reason I hate the end of summer. NO BURGERS from hamburger Heaven. I have only limited my taste to only the burgers and fries but other have told me that everything is pretty good.

I had lust in my heart. It's all I could think about. The thought of a root beer float, the way I had always remembered them at Hamburger Heaven, burned in my brain. I was like a crazy woman. Was this hormonal? So, not good. My car got me there like it was pre-programmed. I even refrained from pushing those in line into the seemingly endless York Road traffic and waited my turn. I proudly ordered my root beer float; the kind my Dad and I used to have together, smiling the whole time. In went the straw, then the first drag, and then ... complete and utter disappointment. What has happened? I will admit, the root beer was very good; but I think it was the ice cream. Gone was the fabulous, custard ice cream that made this drink. It had gone from memorable to mediocre. My advice, go to Culver's; then the custard ice cream will stand on its own merits; and drink yourself into complete nirvana.

Good root beer. Terrible onion rings. Why are the rings so expensive, for so few, for so bland and soft? Ugh.

After spending time with great company at the Yelp Wine & Vine event in downtown Elmhurst, I was driving home and spotted this little corner shack before hitting the expressway. I had already eaten too much but I can always find room for dessert...and sure did this time around. I got a medium ice cream cone, with twist flavoring of course (chocolate/vanilla). It was delicious and sadly enough, reminded me of McDonald's ice cream---machine ice cream is all the same unless the temperature is off. But I loved the little walk-up burger stand. Also the root beer barrel is uniquely cool. Next time I'm in that area I'd love to give a rootbeer float and triple-decker burger a whirl! I wish I had a Hamburger Heaven near my house as a kid...although I'd probably be much heavier if that were the case.

Hamburger Heaven? We shall see! I've gotta be honest...if it weren't for the yummy and plentiful green olives on the burger I would have given Hamburger Heaven 2 stars. And had their root beer actually lived up to the hype they would have gotten 4 stars. Bustling downtown Elmhurst has sprouted up all around Hamburger Heaven since it first opened in 1948. I do like this type of hole-in-the-wall local stop where you sit on picnic tables and chow down. The burger patties are a bit small, probably why you get two of them Big Mac style. They were generous with the toppings though, so that was a plus. AND you have the option of adding green olives to your burger! Say what?!? I've never heard of such a thing! Since I'm a dirty martini kind of girl I was all about adding the green olives. This made an okay burger totally yum-o. I was disappointed in my other two items: the fries and the root beer - both of which have been given some hype as to how great they are. While the fries were cooked to crispy perfection they are just the regular old frozen crinkle fries you can buy at the grocery store. The root beer, while I could taste it was definitely creamy, it was also definitely flat. And that was the consensus amongst my dining companions - flatter than a pancake. Time to check the carbonated water line... There is no indoor seating so if you're coming here do it in fair weather or plan on taking it to go. And if you come during peak lunch hour plan on waiting in a long line to place your order. I'm not writing this place off, though. The green olives will most certainly draw me back, though I'll probably go for the quarter pounder next time. And I'm willing to give the root beer another shot. Everybody has an off day, right?

OK, first things first..... People, don't confuse nostalgia with a really good meal. Pizza burger, onion rings, small drink..... $9.65. That's not nostalgia, that's a rip off. Pizza burger is premade patty, dollop of pizza sauce, slice of cheese. About 9 premade onion rings. Nothing to write home about. I need not cover the diet coke. "Dining" on a picnic table on crushed gravel outside while traffic and large loud trucks whizzed by..... Wished I had trusted my instincts when I have driven right by this place about 500 times before and not come in.

It's 10:30 on a saturday morning, I'm very hungover with the talking heads floating through my head: well, how did I get here? A saturday off isn't supposed to be in elmhurst, but yet, it is. At first I was regretting playing tag along with my friend who was visiting from the UP, but there was hamburger heaven and I needed me some ice cream and root beer. I know, it's not exactly the breakfast of champions, but I didn't care. I was just operating at the pace I felt like and I needed some friggin root beer damnit. I got myself a cone of chocolate ice cream to start it all off. This was exactly what I wanted. While it wasn't the greatest ice cream in teh world, it was pretty good and more in the soft serve category. How do I not speak of the root beer. Well, it was pretty damn good. While not the best root beer I've ever had, it more than made my day right there with it being damn tasty. Most of all, it was pretty cheap. I know I didn't order up a ton of stuff, but it was only a few bucks for the ice cream and large root beer. I'm sometimes in the area as Chicago Wine Co isn't too far from here, so I'm sure my root beer thirst will be quenched yet again

If your looking for a fun nostalgic experience, this is the place to go. If your looking for really good food, then this is not the place to go to. The burger is consistent with an ordinary fast food burger and the fries are decent crinkle cut frozen fries. The root beer has a strong vanilla taste but it is not very carbonated. I though the food was a tad pricey for the quality. But it is a cool place that you can eat on the picnic tables.

Stopped by today for my first Hamburger Heaven experience, and it was good. A little pricey for a cheeseburger and it does taste like a Big Mac...or should I say a Big Mac tastes like Hamburger Heaven. The fries were good. The place does not have any indoor seating but there are a few picnic tables outside.

  • Rene F.

First off - for a place called Hamburger Heaven, their hamburgers are pretty dull - thin patties, lots of bun, and no sliced tomatoes or pickles, or onion. They are not greasy, and taste okay, but that's all the faint praise I can muster. Next time I go, I may order the 1/3 lb. hamburger, just to see if I can taste the meat more than bun. The fries are good - very potatoe-y and well cooked. What I really like at this place is the root beer floats - get the big ones, and you will be sipping happily for a long time. The limited picnic table seating is all outside, and the bored teens manning the takeout window don't like you, but they get the job done fast. This is a good stop on your way home from somewhere else - get a root beer float and drive away!

I have fond memories of this place from high school and I've been thinking about going back the past few trips to visit the parents. The last trip into Elmhurst we set out on an all family excursion despite the so-so reviews on yelp. The reviews are right on. The burgers were alright - nothing special to write home about. They burger reminded me of a Big Mac but without the satisfaction. I will give HH props for the suggestion of green olives on the burger as I had never heard that before and it was an interesting twist. The cheese fries were good but I was left longing for fries from the jukebox shaped establishment across town. I'd say give it a shot. The food isn't terrible and I feel like you get to experience that 50/60's magic that a walk-up burger joint has.

The best - be sure to order fries too! and slurp it all down with the homemade rootbeer.

Couldn't help but stop in this place when I drove past... its old school and looks like its been there forever. I ordered the cheeseburger and onion rings and of course a large root beer. Order was quickly filled and staff was friendly. The onion rings were standard fair, but made to order so crisp and hot. The burger was delish with normal american toppings. Burger was cooked perfectly and juicy.. just like I wanted. I can't say enough about the root beer... I almost went back for another glass. Something about tap root beer just makes me wanna stick my head under the tap and chug lol If in the area is a must stop

Well, a few days after eating at an In-N-Out, I checked out this local joint and was surprised! They have an extra bun in the middle like a Big Mac but it tastes almost exactly like an animal double from In-N-Out. A little over priced but good enough to curb the hunger of flesh.

Tried ordering at 9:01PM, as I was in line right behind other customers, but was rudely turned away by the employees... all I was going to order was a root beer float!

Having spotted Hamburger Heaven on previous drives through Elmhurst, we took advantage of the lovely weather Saturday to explore downtown Elmhurst and have some lunch. While Hamburger Heaven is not the omg-orgasmic-best-ever burgers, they are made fresh, juicy and very good. As I told my husband, it's like a Big Mac would be if it were actually GOOD. Next time I'll ask for extra pickles and no mayo, though. The fries were tasty, again, not *amazing* but very solid. The root beer float was deeeelicious. Bottom line: Fresh, hot, tasty, affordable fast food. With an added '50s nostalgia on the edge of a great downtown area. Worth going to; worth going back to.

This is the sort of root beer stand and burger joint that you really want to love, but Matt G put it well in his review...don't just love it for nostalgia's sake. Burgers are pre-made (frozen?) disc patties and frankly just not all that great. The root beer is quite good and the crinkle cut fries are pretty solid. However if you can't deliver on the burger itself, those just become an after thought. I suppose if you went here as a kid and enjoyed the experience then the burger might not matter as much. For a first timer, it's pretty meh by comparison when there are so many better options out there.

I love this place! I go for the root beer, chicken fingers and honey mustard sauce. Plus, the fries are delicious. We get our food and quickly drive home, well, maybe not so quickly because the chicken fingers are always really hot. So we get home and have our yummy food feast. The food is good, the nostalgia is good, and the root beer is amazing.

I guess it depends what you are reviewing at Hamburger Heaven b/c it sure ain't no heaven for hamburgers. I've been here a bunch of times for soft serve, shakes and malts but stopped going for burgers years ago. I know that some people have that nostalgia thing going on because its been there for, like, 100 years but really folks...they could try a little harder on the food. They do make a decent malt and soft serve is, well, soft serve right...can't mess that up? I give it two stars. Go for the ice cream after you've had your burger fix somewhere else.

Heaven is stretching it a bit, but I'll give it maybe the third level of Heaven, which I learned from Wikipedia is "Shehaqim." Still possibly misleading since Shehaqim is the place with the manna. You order a basic burger and get something resembling a Big Mac - a double with sauce and other similar toppings. The burger wasn't excellent, but I got caught up in the nostalgia nonetheless and enjoyed. I LOVED the root beer. It's a burger shack - you walk up to the outdoor counter and eat in your car or while walking, I guess.

Tonight, on the way home from the city my friends and i were approaching this place when i INSISTED that we stop! I pass by it all the time and never seem to pass it when it is open. Despite my seemingly bad timing, I have always wanted to try it because I have heard people boast about their fabulous rootbeer, and the place looks pretty cool since it's a landmark and all. I really should have heeded my poor timing as an omen that I was never destined to stop here. BTW - this is going to be a lengthy review so if you don't feel like reading it - here is the bottom line: The root beer float was the worst one i've ever had in my life and the servers inside had terrible attitudes that were so rude and condescending they made me feel like i was out of place and stupid. Definitely two good reasons not to ever go back. My boyfriend and I both ordered root beer floats, and no food. He mentioned that his co-worker grew up in Elmhurst and swears that they're the best, so i had a good feeling. When i got it, i took a sip and for a split second thought that they had filled it with water and not root beer. I took it in the car and opened the lid and saw that it LOOKED like root beer, but tasted totally flavorless and watered down. The ice cream wasn't bad, though. My boyfriend's tasted the same and as we tried to choke it down i couldn't help but think something was wrong and decided to take it back. I went to the window and explained to the woman that i really thought something might be wrong with my float and told her that it tasted strange. I told her that i've never eaten there before and that i didn't know what the root beer was supposed to taste like, but i explained that it was so bland it was like drinking sugar water mixed with ice cream. She made a face and walked away, spoke to another person behind the counter, they exchanged words and she came back to the window and said to me, "Well, the root beer ain't flat. What do you want?" I asked, "Can i get something else? What are my options?" She's like "You want a diet coke?" I asked her if i could at least taste the root beer to see if it maybe it was the ice cream, she sighed deeply and grabbed a sample cup - which i tried... and it was soooo awful, lol. I wasn't trying to be rude and i didn't want to be insulting so i asked her "This is really what it should taste like?" and she replies, "Well this ain't no A&W, it's Richie's." I laughed and said, "That's fine. Can i get a shake?" Afterall, i paid like $5 bucks for this horrible concoction and thought it was ludicrous she was trying to offer me a diet coke. She then started arguing with me about the cup size and how she couldn't just GIVE me a shake and told me i'd have to pay again, and i told her i thought it was a rip off that i wasn't offered my money back and that they were trying to compensate me (if you can call it that) with an item half the price of what i ordered. As i'm standing there deciding on what i want to do, this heavy set woman behind the counter says to the woman helping me "Just give her the f-ing shake if she's going to get f-ing P.O'd about this." I was astounded. I realize this isn't some 5-star restaurant and it's not like i'm really sensitive about foul language, but this is a business and i would at least expect the employees to conduct themselves in a more professional manner! Not to mention i was trying SO HARD not to be belligerent and i did apologize a few times for complaining. At this point i told them "you know what, forget it. I don't want the shake - you can keep that and your root beer, I'll just never come back here ever again." I really doubt this place has been in business since the '40s by consistently hiring people with attitudes like that. It demonstrates why places eventually fold up, and then you wonder how a landmark could just disappear! The owners really need to re-evaluate who is working there and how they are treating their customers if they expect to stay in business for decades to come.

The double cheeseburger was really nothing special. Perhaps if I grew up near Hamburger Heaven, I would feel differently. However, the root beer float may warrant a return trip! I'm always a sucker for old burger joints with nice old neon.

Why? WHY?! do people waste their time/money at Mc Dummy's? Thank God for places like this! Awesome burgers, The fries are perfect. The Root Beer floats will make you float to the stratosphere. You can see the family working in the grill area and see how each burger is prepared...it's cool to watch the owner flip the burgers around in the wrapping...he's very particualr about how it's done. I love this place, can I marry it? Maybe in California. Price doesn't matter when the food is this good. Anybody who doesn't appreciate this place is either from 1: California, 2: Thinks Mc Dummy's named a burger after the AC/Dc Guitarist, 3: Votes for community organizers.

I'm giving this joint a 4.5 Stars! I'd give them a five if they were open all year round! Their Olive Burgers are the best... their root beer floats are just awesome... omg... I'm going to have to go there today! Yum-mo... as Rachel Ray would say!

I love the burgers and the special mix they put on. I would say that sometimes there is more bun than meet though. They use crinkle fries and they've been mostly over cooked the past few times. M-F they're open til 10:30 pm. Sat open til 9 p.m. Sun CLOSED

I think to a certain degree this place is riding on nostalgia and a lack of great lunch options in the Melrose Park-Northlake-Elmhurst area. Having no connection to the area other than the fact that I work down the street I thought it was just okay I got a cheeseburger (I guess the default option is a double?), fries, and a root beer. The cheeseburger and fries were fine, but not exceptional and really not noticeably better than what you'd get at McDonald's. The root beer, for which Richardson's is known, was a huge disappointment. It was really weak and watery. I don't get the hype. Hamburger Heaven is also a bit too expensive given the quality; my lunch was a little over $6. All in all I wasn't impressed. The little stand is cute and quirky and it's nice to see independent places like this still exist, but I won't be making a special effort to trek here for lunch and I'd certainly never go out of my way for it.

Hamburger Heaven just gets a big "eh" from me. I think people that love it have just had it around in their lives for so long they are mesmerized by the memories it gives them. The exterior is straight out of a 1950's teen movie. Brick with neon signs, you place your order at a window (no going inside) and then you get to eat in your car or take it home. there are no tables. Pretty cute and unusual for this intersection in Elmhurst, (which sports a lot of new strip-mall type businesses like Panera and CVS) BTW they are NOT open year round! I think its just from May-September. Things like hamburgers, Italian beef and hot dogs are the norm here. When I worked in the area a while back, I would stop sometimes to get a soft-serve cone, which are very nice on a hot day and pretty inexpensive. Someone told me that the french fries were the house specialty and should not be missed. When I ordered them I got not the thick, hand-cut, skin-on fries I had imagined, but crinkle fries that were on par with Ore-Ida. The "Red Hot" was nothing more than a basic hot dog slathered with yellow mustard, green pickle relish and ketchup (!!! I thought that wasn't allowed in Illinois!!!! Ketchup! On a hot dog! Horrors!) I guess if you are in the area and are hungry, then its an OK place to stop. But I don't recommend making a special trip. Its not that great.

First of all I NEVER eat at Mcdonalds!! I love the burgers here, They are not gross and greasy and don't have the obvious char-grilled artifical flavoring of some "other" fast food places. The burgers are more light and airy NOT big fat and greasy and I love that about them. The Root-beer is really good, the fries are really salty and the combo of the two with the hamburger is addictive. The only negative comment i have is that they don't do refill of any kind with their drinks.

  • Jon G.

Some people rave about the root beer here. I think it is eh. Dog N Suds rules! Who's with me?! The crinkle cut fries here are good. Plenty of salt and that is how i like it. As far as the burgers go, they don't knock my socks off, but they are good. One of the burgers is pretty much like a Whopper, but still good. The thing I like here is green olives are an option for a topping. I love that. Green olives on a burger really fix my wagon. It is for sure worth it to try this place once.

The quintessential 50s style suburban hamburger joint. At the intersection of two major roads, where other restaurants (and businesses) have come and gone, this place lives on. Yep, that's Hamburger Heaven. Where you can get a good burger, fries, and shake for a good price. Keep in mind, this place is NOT open in the winter.

UGH! I L-O-V-E this place! Doesnt help that I am 8 months prego and I want the chocolate soft serve ice cream on a cone ALL THE TIME! They do have some great burgers and fries as well! Oh and the rootbeer floats...MMM What a great little place...wish it was open all year round...but I guess it's something to look forward to in the sping!

I have been eating the double decker cheeseburger since I was 5-yrs old living in Elmhurst back in 1958. Back then, the original owner still owned the joint. For a span of 30-years, I was there on Opening Day (April 1st) and Closing Day (November 1st), but I've dropped off lately. Every single time I go there, I order (2) double decker cheeseburgers with everything and extra mix. The mix (sauce) makes this cheeseburger; there's nothing like it. The combination of the mix and the raw onions is a TASTE SENSATION. The recipe is a closely guarded secret, and has not changed since 1948. It has become very pricey over the years, so I normally don't order anything else. The trip from Oak Park to Hamburger Heaven is filled with anticipation, every time I go there. This joint is unique; that's for sure!
