I've been here twice. It is a basic breakfast place, with nothing hugely special. That's just fine by me. I like basic breakfast. I like omelets and skillets and they have those. The service is good and speedy. As is typical with many "family" restaurants in the Chicago area, you're going to find that the menu variations tend to be Greek or Hispanic touches. Nothing wrong with that. I ordered an omelet with chorizo and the waitress brought me some home made salsa. This is very much a neighborhood joint. Lots of regular customers and a few folks drawn from the hospital. One morning, there was a crowd of football players from York HS. Nice kids and they were treated well by the staff. Prices are reasonable. We'll be back.

Probably the worst customer service my significant other and I have ever had at a restaurant. To start the service was slow and the waitress was rather unattentive, as she never checked in to make sure things were going well. After receiving the wrong order I was rudely told I had received exactly what I ordered and that nothing could be done. Obviously this was an unenjoyable experience and we will not be returning.

This place is yummy. Don't let the scary plaza fool you into thinking this place won't be good. I can actually say that I am guilty of that, but I am glad I finally went there!! Their oatmeal pancakes are fantastic. All the breakfast food here looked pretty tasty and the prices are fantastic. I will definitely be back!

Visited here this morning for the first time today. I ordered a egg white omelette and my little one ordered pancakes. The pancakes were light fluffy, and he ate them all. My omelette was good, although I didn't get quite what I ordered, as it had bacon in it and I wanted mushrooms, oops! Even so, it was quite good, and way too big. Our server was quite nice, as well as quick. Since we got there fairly early, it wasn't too busy. When we left, the place was getting crowded. We will have to eat there again and see if the food is still as good. They also have a bakery, with donuts and pastries that looked pretty good...all for another day!

Hidden away in a strip mall in Elmhurst, Fresh Start Cafe has plenty of free parking (gotta love the burbs!) and offers up a wide array of breakfast and lunch offerings. We stopped in on a Saturday morning. While busy- the place was not packed so we were seated in one of the booths along the front windows with no wait.. Definitely the best seats in the house! Our server was busy but managed to get our coffee served all the while bantering with other customers who were obviously regulars. Families and seniors make up the majority of the crowd. The menu includes all of my breakfast favorites so it was hard for me to choose what I wanted. I finally went with the ham. cheese and tomato omelet that was served with hash browns, toast and jam. And my friend ordered the Southern Eggs Benedict which looked alot like biscuits and gravy but on a muffin instead. He said it was good but it didn't look all that appetizing . . .sort of a "white on white" display. As for my omelet- it was overcooked (darn!) and I prefer chunks of ham and this was more like ground up ham. But it was tasty if I didn't eat the bottom and it came up quickly. Breakfast for two ran about $25. The manager (owner?) was pleasant and welcoming and even took a few minutes at the end of our visit to talk with us. If you are looking for a place for breakfast or lunch in the burbs- Fresh Start is a solid choice.

Catered a lunch for 24 people. The order was ready exactly when I needed it. Friendly staff, everyone at my meeting raved about the sandwich trays. I will definitely return for future catering needs. Very affordable and great value... if only they would deliver. This should be the go to place for pharma reps in the area due to the affordability, proximity to the hospital and a menu that fits perfectly!

Smells a little funny in here. Service is nice and swift. Ice tea wasn't too watered down.

We were in town for a Reds/Cubs game at the same time Lollapalooza was going on. We ended up staying in Elmhurst and found The Fresh Start Cafe on Yelp. We took a cab from downtown as soon as we arrived in Chicago and had a great breakfast early Saturday morning, but then found ourselves at a loss for how to get to our hotel four miles down the road. I asked the owner, Dimitri, if he had any suggestions. To our surprise, Dimitri offered to give us a ride! The food was good, the service was good, and we got to the hotel ready for a nap. I recommend The Fresh Start Cafe if you're out in Elmhurst. Tell Dimitri that the firefighters from Cincinnati sent you!

Started working pretty close to this cafe and I had to check it out. I love the food and service. I go in and carry out. They offer breakfast and lunch items and both are great!! I love their chicken pita filled with feta cheese!! It's great!!! I recommend this Cafe for breakfast and lunch!!

My wife is big on breakfast, so she Yelp'd Fresh Start and we decided to try it out...except for take out, which is unusual for breakfast...but anways....we go there and are delighted to see a huge menu (I personally like smaller menus because selection is easier, but I digress)... We ordered a bunch of dishes for our family and the food came out relatively quick...the prices were good and the waitress was SUPER MIDWESTERN NICE! There is an amazing family feel to the place and it is very cozy and welcoming at the same time, with some awesome murals on the walls...got check it out ppl! The food all tasted really good too: I got the crepes and a veggie sandwich...portions are HUMONGOUS!

There is nothing fancy about Fresh Start Café, but they serve delicious food and the service was good. South Elmhurst does not have any other breakfast places that can compete.

I'm from Elmhurst originally, and when I go back to the burbs to see my folks, we often grab breakfast at Fresh Start. The service is always really nice and efficient. The restaurant is big, which is good because I hate waiting for breakfast. Everything is true to their name - fresh. I usually get the same thing, the Simple Skillet with poached eggs. Their spinach and tomatoes are always nice and again, fresh, and their rye toast is yummy and actually toasted. I love a good breakfast place, and in Elmhurst, this is the go-to place. The coffee does leave a little to be desired, but I'm pretty particular about my coffee. Get some juice and perfectly cooked eggs, and then go take a nap at my mom's house.

The menu is reasonably priced, as well as delicious. They've created a comfortable atmosphere. They also have an orange juice machine that squeezes oranges and makes the juice right in front of you!!!! Service was fantastic.

Great little place. Nothing too fancy but what they have is very good. My favorite is the oatmeal pancakes! Delicious. Only issue I have is the free wifi seems to be a little hit and miss. But probably a sign that I don't need to be on the internet at breakfast. Definitely a staple in my breakfast rotation.

I chose this restaurant based on the good reviews. I saw in the pictures posted on yelp that they had red velvet French toast, which was another reason I wanted to go here. When we arrived I looked at the menu and I didn't see the red velvet French toast. I asked the waitress if they had the red velvet French toast she quickly replied no and walked away. I was not deterred though and chose the Banana Fosters French Toast instead. My fiancé ordered the potato Pancakes and we both ordered a side of bacon. Once the food arrived I could smell his potato pancakes it was a strong smell and kind of made my stomach turn. I started eating my French Toast covered in bananas and pecans. It was a very underwhelming experience as the bananas didn't taste very caramelized, instead they just tasted old and mushy. The pecans were just plain pecans, I was hoping they would have at least used candied pecans. They syrup had no flavor at all! I then tried some of the bacon, the bacon was awful, very thin and had no flavor at all. The bacon at McDonalds has more flavor than this place!!! If you specialize I. breakfast and Brunch you should have some phenomenal bacon!!! I was very disappointed. The actual French toast itself was mediocre. My fiancé couldn't even finish his Potato Pancakes, as other reviewers had stated the potato pancakes were undercooked and over seasoned!!! They looked like mashed potatoes rather than the properly shredded potatoes that potato pancakes should be, the consistency was gross and the flavor of onion and garlic was overpowering!! I would have had a better breakfast at a fast food drive thru. Very disappointed, food was mediocre and flavorless.

My wife and I were in the area for our anniversary weekend. We stopped in for a late breakfast and weren't sure what to order because everything on the menu sounded so good. Our waitress was really good at answering all our questions. The food was, as the business name points out, made fresh. My wife's chorizo skillet was the best I had ever tried. I had their sampler breakfast of pancakes, fruit (strawberry) crepe, and Mediterranean omelette. The omelette was superb because of the excellent feta cheese they use. It had that great sweet and salty taste to it. The pancakes were good, and the crepe was also very very good. We both tried the fresh squeezed orange juice and it was very good. My wife's chorizo skillet was the highlight though. There is free wifi in the restaurant and everything was very clean. The best breakfast we have had in a long time. I need to find more excuses to be in Elmhurst so that I can try more items on the menu. We are definitely coming back for lunch. Breakfast for two (including tip) cost us $38. Not the cheapest breakfast around, but the quality of the food and service were exceptional.

We've eaten here more times than I can count. The food is generally good and it's close to home. I had the Denver omelet, fruit, and pancakes. The omelet was good, though I ended up with a chunk of ham cartilage. I'm not a fan of spitting out food ... discretely. The cantaloupe was good, but the watermelon looked sad ... I thought watermelon was supposed to be red, not orange. The pancakes were good. My wife had the oatmeal, which she said tasted good, but it came lukewarm and runny. She had to send it back to get reheated. It was as hot as lava when it came back. If I was a first time customer, I probably wouldn't go back. Step up the game Fresh Start! You're still the best breakfast in South Elmhurst, but only because you don't have much competition. As of this writing there are ninety-six restaurants in Elmhurst. I plan on eating at, and reviewing, every one. Follow me on Yelp!

great local restaurant for breakfast or lunch. Standard menu with the food you'd find most places.. Their soups are good.

Great place for a relaxing and very good breakfast. Everything is made fresh using quality ingredients. Fresh squeezed OJ is a plus! It was nice they had a newspaper for me to read with my coffee while I was waiting for the food to be finished. I'll be back again for sure.

I've been here now around 5 times. I've never had an issue with their food at all - its actually quite good. Big portions. I got lunch one time, but all the other times I've gotten breakfast (that you can get all day). I really like their omelettes. I like that you can get pancakes instead of toast. I took away 2 stars because of the service. I've had a different server every time and the service is very forgettable. I've had waitresses from young too older and all were like robots and never even cracked a smile. Not very welcoming. I don't go out of my way to come here. Its more out of convenience when I am in the area.

This restaurant is decidedly average. Food is not good, not bad. The same goes for the service. We'd probably not go back because there was nothing special about our visit.

Decided to stop in yesterday based on previous YELP reviews. Not worth the trip, that's for sure. Food was ok, pricey. Service was not good at all. Sadly, the server seemed annoyed that we were seated, as it was 1:45 and the place closes at 2:30 p.m. It's a tough job, that's for sure, but a good attitude really helps. Won't be back, that's for sure.

Always super friendly and helpful staff. Great food. They beautifully took care of our table of 6 with all of our special orders. Everyone got their food exactly as they requested. The Texas Style Egg Tacos with its homemade salsa and the Mediterranean Fresh Wrap seemed to be two exceptionally good meals we had today.

I'm not quite sure why everyone is giving amazing reviews to this restaurant and no one has complained about their service. Maybe, I am the only one who received rude service?! My boyfriend and I were driving back from the city and decided to stop and grab breakfast and Fresh Start jumped off of the page on yelp for him so we decided to stop there. As for ambience and interior, it is your average looking diner located in a strip mall. We were greeted promptly but the waitress was not friendly and kind of spoke to us and to other people in a military tone. I ordered the create your own skillet with poached eggs and added spinach, onions, and mushrooms. On the menu, it states that the skillets are served with toast unless otherwise noted. Asked the waitress instead of ordering toast or pancakes, could I please have a side of fruit. She simply stated, "NO." At first, because of how rude her answer was, I assumed she was joking as though, of course you could what silly question so I started smiling. Then I glanced up and realized that she was being serious. She did not offer me any options or explanation, but just a flat no. I asked her why and she said that it was not considered a substitution for the skillet and that maybe she could place a few pieces of fruit on my plate. I just stated that I would order the greek toast, which came out almost untoasted and dry. Apart from the toast, the skillet was exactly how I had envisioned it. The prices are expensive for the create your own skillet; it is already 6.99 for the skillet and then it is over a dollar to add an extra ingredient. I do not believe I will be returning, there are much better restaurants in Elmhurst where I do not have to be treated rudely by the server.

We were looking for something local after a trip to Elmhurst Hospital. This place was just up the street- easy to miss as it's buried within a little strip mall but I'm really glad we found it. Breakfast is served at lunchtime, which I LOVE. Our server was friendly and efficient and the food was served quickly and was quite yummy. I had the florentine Benedict and my husband had the egg, bacon and French toast combo. Simple food, but nicely prepared. We would definitely come in again!

They remodeled a little while ago. The booths on the north wall used to be very comfortable. Apparently in the name of cramming more people in, anyone with even a small pot belly will find themselves with the table crammed into their chest and wishing they had asked for a table. Prices are up again (and again and again). We're through with Fresh Start.

Fresh Start is one of Elmhurst's best kept secrets. Located on the west side of York Road in a strip center, it's easy to get to for Oak Brook based folks like me to meet with colleagues, prospects or clients. I've had several sandwiches, and recently their strawberry and almond topped salad with grilled chicken, which was great! What they lack in decor, they more than make up for in friendly servcie and great food.

I went here for lunch with one of my former teachers and current best friends after watching her amazing pitbull overnight! I miss you, Duke! She lives about five minutes away from this place on York Road...it is hidden in a strip mall just like one of my other local favorites, Jam n' Jelly in Darien. If this was at harbinger of things to come I was in luck. Dishes ordered: Build your own omelet and Simple Skillet. Sides of cottage, toast, and fruit cups! The service was standard. We got a pitcher of water and a tall giraffe (ha) of coffee, so she didn't have much to do. I'd give this place four stars, but it just does what a local diner should do. Serves breakfast and lunch at a reasonable price. As stated on their website, there is supposed to be a bakery. There was no bakery! I also stated to my friend that we were about forty years too old to be dining there. I went up to pay the 25.83 after the line of old timers (They all got separate checks). I'd suggest if you're in the area. Elmhurst is a big town with Chicago aspirations. They are close, but not quite.

The first time I tried Fresh Start was a non-inspiring experience. I was in the area and impulsively stopped in for breakfast today. I perused the menu scotch taped sloppily on the front door and decided on oatmeal pancakes. The hostess seated us in a booth where the wall was partially painted. I was brought pecan pancakes with a tiny wedge of melon garnish and an equally small garnish of pecans. I questioned the waitress who insisted they were oatmeal despite the pecans in the batter. The pancakes were undercooked so I sent them back. My wife ordered potato pancakes that were thick, undercooked and heavily seasoned with onions and garlic. We were over charged for the potato pancakes and where told that we had an old menu. Fresh Start fails to even come close to the fine restaurants Elmhurst has to offer.

Our server was the nicest lady! I can't handle huge amounts of food, so she let me order off the kids menu, and it was so good! I went back in 2012 and got crepes but hated them, but this time I got the french toast and it was great. I recommend this place, just not the fruit crepes!

  • Ada L.

Food is great. I ordered a crepe and it was perfectly done. Services was nice, and they gave you a whole pot of coffee by yourself instead of asking them every now and then. There's free wifi there and it is very fast. On our table we also ordered 2+2+2 (sausage, Pancake and egg) and skillet. Both are very good as well. Highly recommend.

Went their with coworkers for breakfast 2 days in the row. Omelets were pretty good as well as the pancakes. Pancakes were home style and tasty. The staff were friendly and reminded me of the show 'Mel's Diner'

Omelettes the size of your head. Seriously. Fresh Start is a great local breakfast joint (lunch is alright, but breakfast is stellar) of all the breakfast places I've been to in the area this is the only place I 'm willing to give 5 stars.

You can always count on a great breakfast here. The biscuits and gravy and the Pancakes (regular and oatmeal) are my fav's. If your local they'll even Deliver. I live 5min away and it always makes it to me warm. But dining in is always my first choice.

We were in the area and hungry so decided "lets hit this place" but I couldn't figure out why it was so crowded and busy! Well DUH, the food is great! It's casual but bustling with customers and good food. Over all, nice place to eat at and food was very good. It's a bit hidden (strip mall). Service was good and there is a huge menu. When we're back in the area (we are from Chicago's Southwest Side) we'll definately be back in.

Food was ok. Nothing special. I ordered eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was too lemony. Straw crepe was good

Nice alternative to the soulless breakfast/brunch chains. Food is good with fresh and quality ingredient and perfectly prepared; the service good. Prices are better than the corporate chains. Worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood.

Mediterranean-influenced cafe perfect for a quality bite at reasonable prices. I'm not really a fan of wraps, but here they are crisp and tasty.

  • Nicole L.

It's been a long time since I last ate here, but when I worked in Oak Brook it was a favorite. The atmosphere and service is great and the food is very tasty. I might have to take a special trip here sometime soon as it's been too long.

I finally found a place that knows how to make a breakfast burrito. Yahoo! (It's called a wrap on their menu.) Plus you can get it with a regular, wheat, or spinach tortilla. It's not all that "Mexican," no chorizo, etc. But if you put some hot sauce on there, it is dang good! Lots of other great breakfast items as well.

  • Todd B.

Great local breakfast or lunch spot - Service with a Greek smile - very family, very local - seems to be a place where the business crowd can enjoy for lunch where they may even feel like their "going home for lunch." I particularly like the omelets and Greek potatoes - fair price - easy to park and walk right in.

    (5)
  • Big Z.

Very good breakfast at reasonable prices. I am big fan of the skillets here (I create my own with zucchini, bacon, and jack and cheddar cheeses over hash browns and over-easy eggs). They are also usually very quick about getting you your food.

Always a tasty breakfast or lunch in a great atmosphere with good service at nice price.
