This is our favorite place! The guys that run this joint are great guys. They know us and are always smiling and happy towards us... (plus good food sooooo why not try it!) We typically go once a week because it wonderful and fast! They're so helpful with ordering and even remember what I like and I basically never have to ask for a thing. (unless I want to try something different ) I've wanted to review them for a long time now but I never had yelp. I do own my own business and have since gotten so weird reviews of my own. I noticed that people only like to review icky stuff! Negative nellys! So I took the leap so I could send some good MOJO out there to the places that deserve it! If you've never gone here you should go, FOR SURE! **Take note after 5 they are typically very busy (because it's good and that's a great thing) although I don't think I've ever seen anyone waiting to sit because they're very attentive up front. It's authentic food so if it's busy you may have to wait for it. They have great drinks and all kinds of beers with tvs and usually sports on so you won't miss a thing! Try it!!!

Try the hot salsa! It is my regular lunch place. The fajitas are terrific and so is the Veracruz plate. Service is good and the place is kept clean.

Best Mexican restaurant in Dekalb county. We come here once a month. Waiters are excellent and very polite.

Went during dinner time around 645pm * service was sub par, every time I needed a water refill I had to flag someone down but the server was constantly at the table asking if I wanted a second margarita lol *the food was ok typical Americanized Mexican sides beans and rice but my tacos were pretty authentic and had great flavor

We came here when they first opened and...well...did not have the greatest experience. Since then, they have changed hands and what a difference. The food is exceptional and authentic. This is one of the few places you can get and actual fish taco, most places just chop up their battered fried fish but not here, seered talapia. Wait staff is very friendly and tends to remember you after a few visits, if not, they do a good job making you think they do. Food come out fast, at least it appears to. Maybe we didn't notice because of the fresh chips and excellent salsa, which also is my only little "complaint' is that they are not consistent with how much heat they add to it so check first before downing a big bite. Would highly recommend.

Make sure to visit this location on margarita Monday! A 12 oz. margarita is $2.99. I went for a date night with myself for a margarita and some queso... The cheese was a bit bland but it hit the spot nonetheless. The live music made for a great environment... I'm not sure if music is daily or just during specific times. I will definitely be back!

Decided to come to this place because every other place had a 1 hour+ wait, but I'm glad I did! I had the Mexican enchiladas which was the special for the night. It was delicious and the server Miguel was attentive and courteous. My meal was also under 10 dollars!...without dessert of course, but the $4 fried ice cream was completely worth it. I'd recommend to anyone wanting some good Mexican food at a decent price.

I went to Los Rancheros quite a bit my freshman year( 2011) and the steak tacos were to rave about. Went back that summer while apartment hunting and the steak had an awful liver taste to it. Went back a couple more times to continuously be disappointed. Will not return.

We tried this over the weekend for the first time and we're fans! The food was fabulous all the way around and we will be back. I had their flag enchiladas, which included one each cheese, chicken and beef enchiladas with a different sauce on each. Others in our group tried the tilapia tacos, one of the combo meals, and fajitas. Everyone at our table came away happy with the flavors and quality of the food. Service was subpar and is the only reason I knocked off a star. We went after NIU football Saturday night, so we weren't too surprised that they were busy and that service was a little lacking. We waited so long to even have drink orders taken that we we would have walked out on any other day. We were expecting a certain amount of post-game craziness, so we waited it out and we're glad we did. Our waiter appeared to have a lot of tables, but once he finally came to our table, then he was attentive the remainder of our visit. Prices were reasonable. I had a margarita and everyone else had sodas. We had four dinners and one dessert, and our total tab was around $60. We'll be back!

This place is pretty popular in DeKalb. It has a reputation for great food and good service. I definitely appreciate the attentive service and warm ambiance. However, the food was average. The prices are okay. However, the rice and beans were a bit salty. There is nothing extraordinary about this place. Perhaps I went on an off night? I had the chicken tacos in a corn tortilla with rice and beans. The meal was not terrible however it did not live up to its reputation. While you wait for your food, the chips and salsa are regularly filled. They are delicious. Head on over and try it out. It was not a tragic meal.

I love this restaurant! The best Mexican restaurant in DeKalb. There are other better known ones downtown but neither comes close to the quality of food and friendly service as Los Rancheros. They always have great food & drink specials too. Did I mention the food is the best?!?

Not authentic. Tasted worse than taco bell. Slow service. We were tempted to leave without paying bc the food was so bad and the service was so slow. I can honestly say it was the worst mexican food I've ever had.

Visited here around Christmas 2010, and was not very impressed. There are better restaurants in the area. The Chips were pretty ordinary, though the Salsa was ok (not great). The Guacamole appetizer was chunky with strong flavors (usually a good thing), but the onion was too strong, almost overpowering. I had the Shrimp Diabla, which I thought was OK, but kinda ordinary. When I wrapped the Corn tortillas around bites of shrimp, etc., they fell apart. The Flan was overcooked. We did not order the Soppapillas, as their description have them starting with tortillas and ending by adding ice cream.

Sorry to say but I will not be going back. Don't get me wrong, the food was not bad but it was not that good either. I had the steak quesadilla appetizer. Usually I would expect the quesadilla to be cut in 4 pieces and a garnish of lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole -or at least this is what I have experienced at EVERY other restaurant I have ever gone to. It was literally just a huge quesadilla with steak thrown on a plate with mixed taco blend cheese that I could have bought at Walmart. My boyfriend ordered a steak burrito and as another person wrote in a review, "Mexican food is kind of Americanized," but there was nothing in the burrito except meat and cheese. Basically we ate the same meal. If he wanted lettuce, tomato, beans, whatever....it was extra. Not what I expected especially since the review on here aren't bad :-(

We had two of the vegetarian combos, an order of guacamole dip, and a chile poblano, which is the vegetarian chile relleno (their chile relleno has ground beef in it). The poblano had some essentially liquid cheese in it, as well as egg, and came covered in red sauce and more cheese. The food was basic, not spicy at all; on a future trip we might order one of the salsas listed as side dishes. The chips put out before the meal were unremarkable; the salsa was nice, with bits of cilantro. They do mixed drinks, sodas (Pepsi products, including Dr. Pepper and Sierra Mist), and Jarritos Mexican sodas, in addition to horchata (but they were out). The decor is a little odd, as if this was a repurposed TGI Fridays; in addition to all the Mexican decor on the walls, there are ceiling fans and stained-glass fruit hanging lamps. Big TV on the back wall; kind of sports bar-ish. Service was a little slow.

Okay, get over the fact that this is one of the only Mexican restaurants in town, and get on with the food. The food tastes somewhat authentic, but jeez real authentic Mexican doesn't have to be THAT expensive. Sure, I'm a college student and am really poor, but really $8.49 for 3 small tacos and a ramikan of beans and rice? THEN USE Mexican 3 cheese from KRAFT instead of real Hispanic cheese... it does not make sense. I guess nothing will ever compare to my default of La Taquiera back at home in Carol Stream... Chips and salsa served, service is speedy, but like my rating says, "Meh. I've experienced better."

My boyfriend and I love coming here!! They give you chips and salsa before the meal. They make the salsa different each day, and usually medium "hotness" which is perfect for me! I usually get quesodilla (spelling?) or tacos, and my boyfriend gets something new each time we go. We're never disappointed. The service is usually very prompt. The first day we went there it was on a Sunday, and there was a guitarist going around to play for each table. It was something new for us, and certainly spiced up the evening. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a casual night out from some good Mexican food!

This restaurant is the closest you're going to find to authentic Mexican food in Dekalb. All Mexican food is kind of Americanized anyway but this restaurant is good. Much better in a long run than Rosita's and better than Eduardo's. Less Expensive too. They had excellent Carnitas which most other restaurants haven't even heard about but is standard Mexican food. The Carnitas Fajitas Salad was excellent. Also, Carnitas Taco's Enchiladas were great. The servers are all really nice and on Sunday's they have a guy an his wife that sing Mexican songs strolling around the restaurant. The one thing that bothers me is the Salsa does keep changing. Sometimes it's excellent, other times it's really plain. I took my parents there when they were visiting here from Los Angeles where we were all born and raised. I thought they would really be impressed because the Mexican food in this town has always kind of been lousy. That was of course the night where the salsa wasn't that great and the chips, usually fresh seemed to be from a bag. But, all in all, we have had really good meals here and are regulars at this restaurant now, eating there sometimes twice a week.

Not great. I enjoyed my meal, Carna Borrachos (steak in lime and beer) my spouse was alright with her combination: burrito, enchilada, chiles rellenos. Salsa was nice but basic, ingredients were fresh and decently cooked. We had flan for dessert, nothing special, but a nice way to end the meal. I wouldn't guess it was made from scratch. Flavor was a bit bland, and things were a bit soft. Not horribly awry, just a little on the lazy side of cooking. I would go back, but would have to be in the mood. Pricing beats Taxco in Sycamore, and this is less bland than Taxco, but still not an exceptionally memorable Mexican restaurant.

Good Mexican food, fair drinks ($1 margarita night is a steal), and excellent service. Ample seating inside and a comfortable atmosphere. Sometimes there is a musician walking around doing his thing, which honestly, annoys the daylights out of me, but people seem to like it. Try the mocajete if you want a LOT of food with a little of everything.

I really like this restaurant. I've been in twice and have no real complaints. It's nothing super quaint or nice, but decent. I equate it to going to Chili's. It's good and a fun atmosphere, but nothing out of this world. The servers however, are phenomenal. They are really nice, and put up with my stumbling attempts at spanish with smiles. I always get the Enchiladas platter with ground beef, and they are actually really good. The only time I've had better was for double the price!

Authentic Mexican food in De Kalb? This is it! My uncle had the Rancheros Enchiladas and I had the Vegetarian Fajitas. Both were delicious. Also the food came out really fasy.

do not order the nachos. It was a soggy mess of what looked like chicken, beef, chips and the thinnest cheese sauce ever. :(

Mmmm good Mexican food finally! :) My sister and I are from California and we've been looking for a good Mexican restaurant to frequent. I think we've finally found one!! The best by far is the service, I can't stand bad customer service, but the staff here are great, very friendly, and very efficient. Atmosphere is welcoming, salsa and beans definitely taste homemade. Overall food was good service and atmosphere great and we will definitely be back for more! :)

I will preface this by saying if I go back, I probably will give another star. The waiter we had was awful. Our food came really quick, but when I needed a refill on water I think he literally just went in the toilet and scooped out some water. NOTHING LIKE LUKEWARM WATER to cool down the spice from a spicy jalapeno. I got a new steak dish and a pork tamale, and I enjoyed both very much. The service was awful, and I will go next Cinco De Mayo and let you know how it goes!

My friend and I go here about once a month to get together and have dinner. We really enjoy their cheap margaritas and they are the right size to not get drunk on. The food is pretty good and tasty, I have only once been disappointed in the quesadillas, they were tasteless. The fried ice cream is so good, I recommend it! The price of the food is reasonable and the service is outstanding!

So we went here after a 2 or 3 year break from Los Rancheros and while the service is better, the food isn't. I dunno, it's like weak, underseasoned, wanna be mexi chow. Almost as if the food was not cooked to order, but cooked ahead of time and re-heated. I mean bland Carne asada? How can that happen at a somewhat successful Mexican restaurant? I didn't get sick this time so they get 2 stars. I still maintain that El Burrito Loco is the best place in town.

I love Mexican food and this place always satisfies my cravings. You get chips and salsa immediately and the service here is fast. I would say the food here is average but I mean that in a good way. It's great for lunch, dinner or just drinks. It's nice to have options in a small town like DeKalb. I wouldn't think twice about going to Los Rancheros, I like it.

This was the first restaurant I tried since moving to Dekalb. I really liked everything about the place- the ambience, food, service, and margs- I tried the premium over ice and my company ordered frozen. We all agreed that the chips are not greasy yet tasty (much different than typical Mexican restaurants) and the salsa is definitely unique, a little spicy, and with fresh herbs too. The fajitas for two actually serves a family of four! We are definitely going back.

Place has gone down . We started coming here about 2 years ago and really fell in love with the place. The guacamole was great and the rest of the food was pretty good as well. The only problem back then was how busy they were could cause a little bit of a lag in service. The last 2 times we have gone the food was bland, smaller portions, higher prices and we just weren't happy with that. The service was better because the crowd was smaller. I hope they go back to what they were doing before. I will probably go back one more time to give them another chance before not returning again. Makes me a little sad at how it has changed.

Simple Mexican food with authentic flavors. I have had better Mexican food, but also much worse. I was told by a co-worker about the Molcajete dish, so I had to try it for myself. It is a hot bowl with all kinds of meats(beef, shrimp, chicken) with cheese, onion, and peppers. They serve it with warm tortillas. It was nice to have so much variety with one dish, and this one dish can feed two people. My only two complaints about this dish was that the shrimp were on the rubbery side and it was too salty. If you tend to salt your food, do taste before you add. I have also tried the tacos on another visit, and they tasted authentic.

Had a good experience here. I'll definitely go back. The food was decent, well-priced.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
