Let me just say from the start that this is a hard place to rate, even though it's a regular stop for me in Boise. Judging it on "coolness" and aesthetics, it's 5 stars. Grabbing a stool around the sushi "river," waiting for a little boat with $1 plates of sushi to float by, and grabbing a favorite before it passes you is fun ... and kind of cool. Sure it's crowded and a little noisy, but the ambiance is like a backwater sushi bar in Tokyo--a fun and unique experience for Boise. On the other hand, the sushi is really hit or miss. Some nights I've been there the sushi has been fantastic with a lot of varieties. However, other nights the sushi is substandard with very limited options. The sushi chefs vary greatly in their skills, speed, and selection. While generally they keep the sushi flowing down the river, some nights it's been a long wait between palatable choices. On the right night, Shige Express is a solid 5 stars, but on others it's more 2 or 3 stars. On average, I'll give it 4 stars.

As another reviewer noted, if you want amazing sushi, this isn't the place to go. The quality was below average compared to other kaiten sushi places I have been to. When I went, they only had rolls, no ngiri or gunkan or anything else. It took about 15 minutes for the two of us to get seated, and there were long breaks during which there was no sushi going around. All this aside, I had a good experience at Shige. The "boat on a river" version of kaiten sushi was novel to me. The rolls were unconventional, and though I seldom knew exactly what I was eating, most everything tasted good. They had deep fried rolls, rolls with spicy tuna, rolls with salmon on top, rolls with avocado inside: all good things. Though this may not be the sushi that dreams are made of, their rolls are pretty tasty and the price of $1 per plate can't be beat.

Best dollar sushi plates in Boise. OK, the only dollar sushi plates in Boise, but they're still very good. It can get a bit cramped at lunchtime, but everyone tends to be friendly and the atmosphere is fun.

This is a great place if you are looking for sushi as a quick snack or and in and out bite to eat. It is nice because sometimes I am not super hungry so at $1 per plate you can eat as much as you feel like eating and can't go wrong that way. However the sushi selection is pretty hit and miss. This is a regular place for my husband and I and we have found that on the weekends when it is busier there is usually a better variety of sushi rather then on a slower weeknight. This might be a better place for someone who is just starting to try sushi because lots if the rolls are pretty safe for first time sushi eaters. Nothing too adventurous. The fried rolls are delicious. The atmosphere here is great and the staff is friendly. It is a little small and pretty cramped when busy so don't be afraid to sit close to strangers. Overall a good choice for some quick and yummy sushi.

We decided they deserve 4.5. The sushi and the service are both great. And at a dollar a plate, a very good deal. The ambiance is all that is lacking. As repeat customers, Austin and I recommend Shige Express. :-)

So bad it was surreal... The most singularly pathetic attempt at a sushi bar I have ever seen, and I've been eating sushi every week for the past 20+ years, in numerous countries. No one offered a drink, not even a cup of hot tea. (I noticed no one else there had drinks either.) In the entire "river" conveyor loop, there were maybe 3 or 4 boats total. All of the boats had little pieces of maki with orange goop on top. All of them. Finally, after watching the orange goop boats circle the river for almost 20 minutes (during the lunch hour on Friday), the "chef" started added some fried pieces which looked something less than appetizing. After wasting my lunch hour watching this sad procession, I decided to pay, and it took another 10 minutes to get change. I love Boise and the local food scene, but this place does not belong on anyone's list or merit even the least consideration.

I am unsure how to rate this. Do people here not know what good sushi is? If not then I feel badly for writing this post.... I just ate there by myself and sat at the bar. I ordered a nice bottle of Nigori (they only had 2 and this was the nicer one) which was delicious! I loved it, great recommendation by one of the servers. Then I ordered a roll which I modified ( I know thats annoying) but I did anyway. They offered some of their rolls without rice so I just asked for this one without rice. No where on the menu did it say it was deep fried. If I am ordering it without rice its because I am one of those annoying girls watching calories... I prefer to drink mine instead. I need to save some calories somewhere since I eat like a sumo wrestler in training... However, the roll came out fried. The server had them redo it which I appreciated, however the next one came out with 3 times the amount of rice normal sushi has. Oh well, fine. I ate it. Barf, the sushi just wasn't good quality. But being hungry I ate it. Fortunately (depending on how you look at it) it was so damn spicy you could hardly taste it anyway. My mouth was on fire the whole time. This was not labeled a spicy roll. Whoever writes the menu should be fired. The expression use your words that we tell 2-4 years olds still holds true today. Just mark fried and spicy. Or if those are too tough, flames would suffice. I was also a bit annoyed that I was asked to close out at 9:04 pm when they are open until 10. I waited tables and know what its like to get out early. But there is a time where it is ok. Plus more people walked in after me. Anyway, i will never come back.

Do not EVER eat here. You are taking your life in your own hands if you do. There is no door for the sushi chef to get behind the counter in the express area. They have to CRAWL ON THE FLOOR to get in and out. When I visited with a friend in November, the sushi chef crawled in and out three times in less than an hour. 1) crawled out with his gloves still on...was gone for awhile and then crawled back in and turned on the water in the sink and simply ran water over the same gloves...no soap...no glove change...no scrubbing... then he went back to packing sushi rice, cutting up raw fish, and making rolls. ::dry heave:: 2) crawled out with the same gloves on...gone for awhile again...and crawled back in and changed the gloves. No hand washing. ::wretch:: 3) crawled out with the gloves on...gone for awhile...crawled back in and - you guessed it - NO hand washing, no glove change - just back to packing rice and touching raw fish for you to eat. I called the health department and they followed up by letting me know they spoke with the owner and gave him instructions on proper hand washing. Whoopteedoo. It's not a matter of IF they are going to kill someone, it's a matter of WHEN. It still makes me sick to think of this, and people deserve a fair warning. I told my friend who ate with me which hospital I preferred and where to donate money if I died after we left there. It's depressing because it used to be a fun and tasty place to go - years ago. Do not eat at Shige's!

Shige is great. I stumbled across the place while in town for a Utah State football game, and now I go every time I'm in town. The staff has always been nice, and the sushi floats around on funny little boats. If you see a plate you like floating by, it's yours for a dollar. This really is a great place, HOWEVER, you need to know what to expect! Shige IS: - A fun little "hole in the wall" type place. - A place to have a good time with some buddies or kids. - Cheap enough during happy hour to eat yourself into a food coma. Shige IS NOT: - Romantic or intimate in any way. - The best sushi you've ever had. - Somewhere to go and ask for custom made rolls. Basically It's fun and friendly. It could also be very quick if that was your goal. Take some buddies and have a good time, or treat your kids for earning good grades. Just don't go there if you are a sushi snob... It's not for you.

Eating in small cramped places and having elbow affairs with two strangers can be unappetizing. I always wonder if the person next to me will grab my water and we will simultaneously unknowingly share water or I'll become food jealous and like what they have better- it ruins your meal every time. Shige's Express is small & cramped, however, if you are food jealous you just have to wait for the next boat of sushi to come along. This place is my kind of "fast food" because it's real/authentic & and most importantly cheap. Especially on Thursdays ($1 sushi plates). Don't go on Thursdays though, because that's when I go and I don't like waiting for people ;) The staff are what make ANY experience, so get to know them and they will make your belly happy.

Very cheap, good quality sushi. There's always some nigiri floating around here (and edamame, seaweed salad, all the essentials), but pretty much every roll I've seen has been uramaki (rice on the outside). Good news for most, bad for others. The chef does make a very good TNT roll, though. If he has time, he may also ask if there's anything you like in specific and hand it right to you. On weekdays it's sometimes not completely packed, and there's always a fresh stream of sushi coming out for the amount of patrons eating. It's a good place for a quick bite to eat, but if you're wanting a lot of variety and it isn't very busy I've usually found it best to sit in the restaurant through the glass doors around the corner. The unagi especially is always snapped up in a hurry. Just be warned; if you come here starving with any specific cravings, you may not get everything you wanted before you give in and stuff yourself with each tasty-looking morsel that floats by.

I'm living in NYC now but most of my family lives in Idaho. Shige Express is definitely my go-to sushi joint when I'm in Boise. Inexpensive, great tasting sushi floating around on boats.... I'll take it.

It is what it is. Nothing fancy, just great, inexpensive sushi. Gee knows how to make his customers feel welcome.
