Hubby and I have stopped in after dinner for a cappucino and dessert to-go, but we've never stayed for a meal ... until last night. We'd been out house "shopping," and purposely ended up on the east side of town in Bown Crossing because we just love the area. We stopped in with a few minutes left of Happy Hour (every day, even weekends, from 3 to 6) and ordered the hummus and pita plate. The hummus was wonderful with a great spicy flair to it; the pita was warm and a little buttery, which added some extra comfort flavor. Although our plan was to grab a quick appetizer and go somewhere else for dinner, we ended up staying. The menu is sourced from local Idaho places -- we love supporting our local businesses. I ordered the Rosemary Polenta with Garden Ragout, and hubby ordered the Mac and Cheese Trinity with bacon. Both were wonderful. I loved my meal, but that mac and cheese combination with the bacon was heavenly! My caesar salad was a little lacking -- it was just lettuce, croutons and (kinda bland) dressing, but hubby loved his split pea vegetarian soup. They have a nice selection of vegetarian, gluten-free and can-be-made gluten-free choices, as well as a nice local beer and wine list. Happy hour appetizer, dinner and drinks were under $50. The service was welcoming and friendly. We will be back -- I've only heard raves about the breakfast and we can't wait to try.

My family tried this place twice, thinking it may be different the second time. We are fans of local organic food stops. Really disappointed service was excruciating, presentation sloppy, flavor bland. I think the wait staff is really the major offensive. Both times ,we had the same off putting results. We will not go back not worth the frustration.

I love, love, love the idea of restaurants embracing local cuisine, but this place was terrible. I had trout with a poached egg and home style turnips and potatoes with capers. The trout was edible but an odd flavor, and the hash was extraordinarily bitter. I couldn't even finish it. I also tried one of the local brews, but that too was too sharp to choke down. I can't echo the previous reviewer about the wait staff, because at least our service was adequate. The only positive experience about dinning here is the cool glasses made by local non-profit organization, Sustainable Futures.

Lucky find. On vacation and had to take our dog to the vet, Habitat, right across from Locavore. I eat mainly plant-based food, so sometimes it hard to find good tasty and nutritious. This hit the mark on both. Ordered the vegan split pea soup and Mediterranean pita wrap (minus feta and sour cream). They were absolutely terrific. If I lived here, I'd be a regular.

I've eaten here twice as a party of four for breakfast. The first time, the waitress completely lost my order and I ended up watching people at my table eat first, then they watched me eat. The water was served from a wine bottle, but was warm and included zero ice. The second time we got the same luke warm tap water. It's NOT cool to serve warm water EVER! My wife ordered a breakfast trout that tasted like chicken and had a very wrong breading on it. It came with no sauce and when she asked for something the put on it, the waitress recommended several things, including ketchup. Ketchup on fish!!! Seriously. We all ordered the "fruit' instead of potatoes with our meal. The fruit was "watermelon". I like watermelon, but I suggest if you go there and want fruit, ask for some specifics. This place is in a location in Boise where people expect decent food, decent service and a little bit higher prices. They way it's getting done now, they're missing an opportunity to do something cool for their clients. Likely won't revisit this place.

This restaurant is NOT good. The service is terrible. This is my 3rd time here and I wanted to give them the benefit of doubt, but, there were 4 of us for breakfast. It took them 20 minutes to take our order, 30 minutes to get our food and at the time they delivered three of the meals they informed us that they didn't have the 4th meal cause they were out of oatmeal. Could they have told us sooner so we could order something else? Never came and refilled the coffee or water. It wasn't like they were that busy. Brittany is a terrible waitress. You would probably be ok just getting a coffee to go, but to sit down and order? Forget it. Our waffles were cold and dry and the applewood bacon had been cooked long before and put in a microwave. It was hard as a rock and cold. I will not eat here again. Frankly surprised this place hasn't gone out of business!!!!

Amazing location. Poor service. Bad coffee. Ok breakfast. Nice owner. If I owned the place I would pay top buck for amazing coffee to get people in the door and replace the service staff so that people would return. I return every few months to see if anything has changed. I wish the place luck.

There's something really special about Locavore. My boyfriend and I live in Southeast Boise and love when we take the time to walk over to Locavore for a bite to eat! We feel like we're at a friend's home, with the simple yet thought-out decor style. All of the dishes are fresh and delicious. The whole concept behind local, fresh food... Well, it just cannot be beat. We've always had a pleasant experience with friendly staff and a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere. Thanks for something different and unique, Locavore!

First, let me say, my experience at Locavore is limited. It's just not terribly compelling. I did not get anything at the espresso bar. Breakfast was good. Baked goods were pretty limited. I liked the oat-mill. Service was fine, though they were not particularly busy, so the attentiveness was not unexpected.

Friendly service. Bitter espresso shot, mediocre omelette. If it wasn't called locovore, I'd say it met expectations. With a title like locovore, I'd expect some attention to actually making good food and drink.

Reading past reviews it's hard to believe they're about the Locavore I know. I've had nothing but creative and wonderfully paired foods, friendly efficient service, and not to mention a great happy hour! $5 glass of wine or $3 pint of beer? Sounds good to me! Try it out for yourself and prove all the naysayers wrong.

Love Locavore. If you are only coming in for coffee and breakfast you are missing out on some of the best they have to offer. They have a great happy hour with great beer and wine selections and also a few food specials. The dinner menu has some fantastic unique items on it. Oh and breakfast is very good as well. i also love the sweet choices that are always changing. Great place to ride you bike to. And we have always had great service here.

Unfortunately, my visit to Locavore disappointed. Atmosphere is a bit bland but inviting enough, and their patio is lovely. The beer is cold, and the selection of wines appears to be decent. Unfortunately, though, I made the mistake of ordering a side "lentil" soup (actually undercooked split peas) and a vegetarian dish, and it tasted like something I might make by accident then throw away before sharing with my family. The polenta had a hard crust, not a crisp crust from being well fried, but hard like they made it last week. My son enjoyed his dinner, and the homemade chips would have been excellent except the oil smelled old. Overall, this is probably a place discovered too late. Two positives: the server was very pleasant and efficient. And the dinner salad another diner had looked quite fresh and inviting, basically the opposite of what I ordered. So it might be an issue with what I happened to order. But I don't know if I've got it in me to try again.

Breakfast here is amazing! My 7-year old frequently requests the Egg Baguette sandwich. The steel-cut oats are filling and flavorful and the potatoes are perfectly seasoned. Kayla is our favorite waitress! Excellent lattes as well.

I come here 3-4 times a week. Gluten free options are outstanding as is the happy hour. Staff is wonderful and take the time to learn your name. Try the gluten free cookies...yummm!!

The service was fantastic. Everybody was so sweet and I wish I lived in Boise so I could come here more often. The baked goods are so tasty!! & kombucha on tab! I highly recommend this spot.

Have eaten lunch here several times. The food is always delicious. I will continue to return. The staff is very friendly. I would have given 5 stars if it were not for the amount of flies inside. If weather permits, I recommend eating outside.

I had dinner here. No complaints on the service. Food was excellent. Everyone found something they liked. I am normally a meat eater, but went veggie with no complaints at this place! My wife had the trout poor boy, and the trout was cooked to perfection and not greasy. Nice outdoor seating in a very new "walkable outdoor mall mixed use development." Drove all the way from Eagle to try it, and I would go again. Nice area to walk around before/after dinner. Accessible from bike trails in the area.

i've been to locavore many many times but this is my first time for dinner. usually i get a coffee and the awesome pow wow bars. lunch menu is pretty great too. but our dinner was awful. we had the Steak Diane. i had to throw tons of salt on it to give it any kind of taste. even the steak was bland, not sure how. but my biggest complaint is the service. the service used to be great when it first opened. Roshana, if she still works there, is also fantastic. but the newer staff give you the menu upon entering and say 'seat yourself wherever you want." i wonder if the owner knows this. not exactly high class. the waitress did not ask what we thought of our meal . she didn't actually come back after dropping our meal off. in the morning when i get my coffee, people other than Roshana just give me a cup and say fill it yourself. they don't even give me a sleeve or top so i have to go to the wall and get those myself. why don't they just put the cups out then and i'll help myself completely? i've been there when a gracious host pours the coffee for me. this felt so good it made me want to come back. now, if Roshana is gone, i'm not sure i will.

This restaurant was a very pleasant surprise. The food was amazing. Fish and chips were to die for - thin trout dipped in cornmeal and lightly fried. The fish sandwiches (salmon and trout) were delicious. The accompanying salad was large and well done. The goat cheese and fig appetizer was superb. All was very reasonably priced. Will definitely go back when I'm in Boise again. Best of all is that it's locally produced.

Very disappointed with dinner! Have been many times for happy hour and it has been great, but will not go back for dinner. Limited choices, then some things not available. Steak very tough and fatty. No mashed potatoes left at 7:00pm that were supposed to accompany 5 out of the 6 meals. This is a prime location that should take more pride in their menu. The service was excellent. No complaints there!

Best meatloaf on planet earth. I hate meatloaf. But I %*@&ing lovvvvvvve Locavore's meatloaf. Beyond the meatloaf, most entrees are pretty good. Mostly hits, a few misses. Soups, you can roll the dice. Appetizers, mostly good. Dinner salad is almost always great. Far more good and great items on the menu than bad. As for the pricing, I think almost all of the items on the menu are a great value. Service-- (compared to other reviewers) I guess we've been lucky and have always had a polite, friendly server. Maybe on 1 out of 10 times, a server was inattentive. But normally they're very friendly and relatively attentive. I definitely recommend giving Locavore a shot and seeing for yourself...

I went here a few months ago to have breakfast and was pleasantly surprised at a great different little fun restaurant ,It had a nice alternative menu. Well just went again today and I was so disappointed with the service and the food, with 5 people running the front of the house it was so slow it seemed like 2 were working the rest just there to socialize ,the menu hasn't changed but maybe the chef has 30 minutes to get my burnt bacon and over hard eggs that were to be over easy asked for toast they have only wheat??? that came 5 minutes after my poorly cooked food and it was like dry cardboard. The glass display case in front with nothing looks like there back of house refer full of milk cartons etc....It looks like a business that is on its last leg right before they close which is so sad to see.

I had the Eggs Benedict. I had ordered this some time ago & was very disappointed, but even more so by the response when I informed the server. But the owner is very talented and it was time to give it another shot. This time, the order was much better. The eggs and the potatoes were both cooked appropriately and I enjoyed the food, the presentation, & the service. My one suggestion is that they need to add some / more cayenne to the Hollandaise Sauce as it was on the bland side or they should offer cayenne at the table for the customer. The hollandaise sauce needs some zing to it. The potatoes, were perfect... they nailed that. I was brutally honest with my 1st review & want to make sure it is clear this place has dramatically improved. The patio is perhaps the best in this neighborhood & worth waiting for. It's a beautiful development & on the Sunday we were there, there was a small Sunday Market in process. The market isn't exceptional, but it is quaint and gives another element to the mix for an enjoyable visit.

We have been going to Locavore since it opened and have enjoyed the food & service - until recently. The food is still great, the chef is very accommodating but the service has gone downhill. Our waitress (5/15 didn't catch her name, sported a few tattoo's) was not friendly, and acted annoyed that we were there as she told us to sit anywhere with a mouth full of food! To the owners: please evaluate your waitstaff and make this the place we rely on for great food and service, like we used to.

This used to be one of my favorite places, but the past three visits have not been good. Twice, I have ordered the Eggs Benedict (veggie). Everything was mushy and the eggs were very watery. The avocados were too ripe and the Hollandaise Sauce was very bland. I'm also not a huge fan of the foccasia break they use in the Benedict's - small slices, think - so they soak up all of the egg water and the sauce - mushy. But, I can live with the break. Last Friday, have multiple meetings there - so, lunch and breakfast. I had the Aunt Pat's for lunch - chicken was definitely fresh and was slimy. It was also warmish, like it had been left on the counter for a few hours. Pears were overripe - almost on the rotten side. This sandwich has been my fav for years, so I was super bummed when it was not good. The other issues I've encountered at Locavore has been the flies - makes me wonder about food storage. In general, this used to be one of my fav's - now, I do not think I will go back. Super bummed that it has gone downhill. :(

A perfect place to stop for afternoon wine, beer and "Small Plates" on our bike ride. The food is and service has been great on our 2 visits...but the 5 stars are for the Pommes Frites with curry ketchup and REAL Aioli. Have not had any better this side of Belgium!

I stopped at this coffee-shop/restaurant while walking along the greenbelt with some friends. It's cozy with a nice ambiance, including outdoor seating. It's also child friendly and had lots of available high chairs for our baby laden group. A ginger cheesecake caught my attention as it was lunch time, and I'd walked about three miles at this point. I didn't realize they also served actual food. The menu was posted outside the door, while inside it had the appearance of a basic coffee shop with pastries and other treats. So I ordered a lemonade and a slice of cheesecake. She gave me the cheesecake and was busy with someone else while I waited for my lemonade. It turns out she forgot I wanted a lemonade, and she rang up another order. My receipt didn't indicate what I purchased so I asked for clarification regarding the price of my cheesecake to make sure that I wasn't being charged again for the lemonade, and I received a huffy reply in response. I get that it's made from scratch using organic ingredients, but it was a really small slice, and, again, I wanted to make sure I wasn't charged twice for the lemonade. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have been as cranky about the price had my order been rung up correctly the first time, but when someone else makes a mistake and you have to reach back into your pocket, it's a little annoying...even more so when they are the one to give attitude. I shelled out another couple of bucks for the lemonade. At least they said it was lemonade. The cheesecake was described to me as having a mild ginger flavor. It was not mild. It was so strong in fact that my lemonade tasted like a gingerade. But my sons seemed to like the cheesecake, and they were welcome to it. Next time we stop in, I'll order a sandwich and maybe give the lemonade another try in hopes that my palate was just overwhelmed by the ginger in the cheesecake, and it wasn't the lemonade that tasted so awful.

I used to come here a lot for lunch and dinner. It's a great place to have coffee (they have dawsons!) and the food never ceased to amaze me. Although, I am not surprised that they have 3 stars, seeing that the service is pretty...eh. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is that I always sat at the bar, and got great service because of it. Please note that the last time I was there was April 2011, but I hear that they have done some staff cleanup and the service is better. As far as local food goes, you get more for what you pay for here than at Fork.

  • Chad M.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more (really 4 stars, but i gave it 5 to hopefully counterbalance the 1's) I've eaten here twice and each time the service was attentive but not overbearing (but to be fair the place was not busy either time). The food was delicious. The trout served with egg was delicious, the meatloaf Wellington is delicious (love the rich gravy), and the gnocchi special was also well prepared and tasty. The chicken piccata with buerre blanc was piquant, rich and tender complemented by polenta and veggie ragout. The cheese sampler was great. Although modest, the wine list has a selection of truly excellent wines (with generous pours - and several great LOCAL selections). Meat was NEVER spoiled with multiple entrees sampled. The portions and quality of entrees make the entree prices bargains. The coffee is good and the baked goods are likewise scrumptious (pumpkin spice cake, shortbread and choc chip cookies) Admittedly, there are many items that are not local - California and Oregon wines, British beer and as one reviewer pointed out mangos (nutella, bananas and oysters) are not idahoan, but there are many items that are indeed seasonal and local, more so than most restaurants. It is locally owned and contracts with local farms (especially for brunch items! Gluten free dairy free nutella/banana waffles?? - okay wait, where is nutella from? And I haven't seen a banana tree in boise yet, but darn-it that sounds delicious if you have Celiac sprue) so I do not think the namesake is an entirely hollow moniker as other reviewers imply. I hope this restaurant survives and I look forward to excellent brunch, paninis and hearty, satisfying dinner entrees in a trendy setting and hip location!!

Every time I've eaten at Locavore (brunch, lunch and dinner), it's been spot on! Their brunches are stick-to-your-bones good. The sandwiches are fresh and tasty (try the Bohemian). And at dinner, if you don't try the Campfire Trout, you're doing yourself a huge disservice. It has the most perfect beurre blanc sauce I've had yet. Next up: try the coffee and pastries, and their fabulous happy hour tapas from 3-6!

I'm not one to quibble over how many angels can dance on a head of locally grown lettuce. I've read the books by Michael Pollan and others (if you haven't, you should) and am very supportive of anyone trying to serve locally sourced food. It's a laudable and challenging endeavor, particularly in a city so heavily rooted (pun intended) in big agribusiness. So why 3 stars? Unfortunately, like so many restaurants founded on a cause, Locavore falls down on some of the basics. The ambience was suitably funky, but the lighting was too high for ostensibly fine dining. They serve water in recycled wine bottles; the idea is cool but the water was not. Lukewarm tap water is no way to make a first impression. They also did not serve bread, which I thought was odd, because I'm pretty sure we grow some wheat in Idaho... The food was passable for the price. As one might expect, the vegetarian dishes are their strong suit, and the Caesar salad was excellent (this is the perfect time of year for salad in Boise). However, if you know or care much about the venerable traditions of fine dining, I would steer clear of the meat entrées. All that said, I will be back. I rarely criticize on Yelp, seeing this mostly as a platform to call out the bright spots I find in the world, not a place to harangue overworked restaurant owners and workers. Hopefully this will be taken in the spirit of constructive criticism it was intended, and I can give more stars next time! :)

The food deserves 4 stars but I cannot believe how horrible the service is. Every time we come here I want to grab the waitress and shake her!!! After our last visit I won't be returning. The tall blonde waitress was in the back talking to a group of friends while our order was forgotten about for 45 minutes. (We were the only customers eating). finally after an hour we got water and food. She blamed the cook, but if the service was better we would have been served on time. After waiting so long after we were finished I had to go ask for a box only to find her in the back on her cell phone. THEN she charged my room mates card twice! She ruined this place for us.

It seems that Locavore was did a bit of service housecleaning. We went in the other day for brunch and were greeted as soon as we entered. We were seated and orders taken by a very friendly waitress. Our food did take a little time but good food is worth the wait. It was actually the crab cake benny that took a while. Once the food arrived we all ate and were on our merry way. It's good to know that Loavore's service now matches their food...quality stuff.

  • James S.

I concur with previous reviews, the name is a misnomer. Locavore this restaurant is not, though I do appreciate the sentiment, and the efforts to source some foods locally. To do the name justice they really ought to revamp the menu to offer exclusively regional foods. That would require a constantly changing menu, and much more attention to food sourcing, but it would be an experiment I would like see played out. I have eaten here only one time. The service was lack luster, the food mostly bland. I was unable to find even a single menu item comprised of exclusively local ingredients. The recent reports of the kitchen knowingly serving spoiled meat is very alarming. It is clear that this restaurant will need some serious adjustments in execution if they intend to continue operating here. I wanted to love this place...

I was pleasantly surprised to find they had many gluten free options and were able to answer all of my questions about how the food is prepared. The menu is healthy, unique, and full of options for all types of diets. I will definitely be going back!

This place was absolutely fantastic! Great service, delicious food and a fun atmosphere. They are very accommodating for gluten free and have many great choices, there home made gluten free bread is delicious. Our server was great, took amazing care of us and answered all of our questions even asking the chef if she was unsure. Will definitely be a repeat customer.

I haven't had bad service here as some reviews indicate but it has definitely improved over time. I eat here for breakfast quite a bit and it's always delicious. Recently tried the Campfire Trout for dinner and it was absolutely amazing. It can be a little crowded on weekend mornings but is worth a visit.

I read on here the meatloaf was best on earth - ahh no unfortunately not. The idea is great - Meatloaf Wellington - but the execution was not. The beef was a bit fatty for my tastes. The gravy to me was a strange flavor and not enough of it. The buttermilk mash potatoes were just ok as well. The server was very polite even if she did recommend the meatloaf.

Wow... it pains me see such low reviews partly because I have had nothing but really good experiences at Locavore. Admittedly, I have only ever been their for lunch and for coffee. The sandwiches are excellent (I mean all of them are really good.) I can't remember the names right now but I recommend the turkey, pear and gorgonzola sandwich. Also the pesto chicken. Their fries are tasty and their fry sauce knocks me over with how good it is. The coffee is adequate- I am a coffee snob. Most people would probably say their coffee is really good but I have lived the last 6 years in the land of amazing coffee (San Francisco). At least it's fresh and strong. They make their own pastries and I have had some really good ones (Christine's bread pudding with blackberries- you've got to try it if you get the chance.) The staff are attentive and friendly. I know them decently well now but I don't think that they are just friendly with me. Last note: I am really pleased to see this kind of restaurant in SE Boise where there are not a lot of restaurants with a Local emphasis. Incidentally, I do a bit of business with Locavore and I work with an organic refugee farm. I know that Locavore has taken some heat for not actually being that local and I feel like I can truthfully say that is not entirely true. I think potentially they could operate more locally (there is potential for growth in this area) but to say that they are not local at all is pretty uninformed. Good job, Locavore!

I love the idea of Locavore. Wish I could love the actual place. The food and the experience were both so...mediocre. Arrived hoping to share some wine and dinner before heading to adult Halloween night at the Old Pen. We ordered at 7:30 on Saturday night. Should be prime time for a restaurant, right? Only four other people were in the restaurant when we arrived but more did trickle in as the night progressed. We ordered the meatloaf wellington, house salads, fries, and crab cakes. Our waitress came back to tell us the meatloaf was sold out. At 7:30pm on Saturday. With a nearly empty restaurant. How does that happen? The house salad was similar to a salad kit I've purchase at the grocery store, basically some field greens with a few dried cranberries and cheese that was supposed to be feta but wasn't. The crab cakes were gray(!) and their texture suggested they were either stirred within an inch of their cake lives or more likely were made in a mixer with crab bits and pieces. No tasty lumps of crab to be found and the color, shiver. If we weren't so hungry and left without an entree we probably wouldn't have eaten them. The fries were good but I can get good fries plenty of other places in town. Such a bummer.
