Love this place. We live no where near it but will drive there just for ice cream!!

Reading the bad Yelp reviews of this place I can draw no other conclusion but that these reviews must be coming from Ruth Reichl herself. She is on special assignment in Boise, seeking the country's best burger joint. I can see it now, she's disguised herself as a hirute middle aged burger connoisseur sitting at a plastic table in 100 degree heat, makeup melting, carefully considering whether the special sauce sweetness is adequately balanced by the sour notes of the pickle. Your expectation at a place like this is a gross 45% lipsburger with soggy fries and a runny shake. My expectations were shattered. A juicy burger with a real tomato slice and quality pickles. Solid fries. Fry sauce! Good shake. Marshmallow banana anyone? Ample tables, spots in the grass. Only the truly confused would expect more. Finally and most importantly there is a personality test at every table: the washcloth. To the young reader who is dating, I humbly suggest you make this your regular first date spot and observe what your date does after his/her meal. Does your date wipe down the table or not? If they do, congrats, you have a keeper (provided their shake flavors were not some kind of crime against nature).

Denizens of Treasure Valley, I may be getting grumpy in my "old age" but it seems that I just cannot find a burger place to satisfy my craving when I really want a hunk of beef. I've tried a lot of the local favorites... Golden Wheel, Big Jud's, and now Fanci Freeze. And while they are all decent enough, I have yet to find that one "go to" spot that I know I will get a great burger. But that's not why you're hear. How did Fanci Freeze stack up? Read on! I'll start with the good in this case. The service is awesome. The menu is pretty big and so I loitered quite a bit in the drive thru lane just looking. The attendant asked if I needed any help and even offered a recommendation, so no complaints at all in terms of how I was served. The food itself is just......... ok. I got a double cheeseburger, fries, and a shake. The burger and fries were par for the course, freshly prepared and with all the usual toppings, but certainly nothing extraordinary. The shake was above average, certainly better than what you'd find at a chain like Dairy Queen or Sonic, but again, nothing spectacular. There is certainly nothing wrong with the food at Fanci Freeze... but to me there was nothing outstanding about it either. Which brings me to my major reluctance in returning. My burger, shake, and fries all came to nearly $11 total. Now I know $5 doesn't get you as far for fast food as it used to, and I am certainly not above paying a bit more for good food. But I just didn't feel like I got anything close to my money's worth here. For less than that I could have scored a burrito and some Dutch Bros and felt a lot more satisfied for my money. So that was really the kicker. Bottom line folks, good but not great. Solid but not spectacular.

Got a marshmallow and mint shake with a spicy chicken sandwich. The shake was hands down the best ice cream I've ever tasted. If you haven't tried one you're missing out. The sandwich came in a nice old fashioned wrapper and the best part is it wasn't smashed. The bun was nice and round with no finger imprints and was nicely laid out. It wan't very spicy but it tasted good.

Typically I don't write negative reviews but I was thinking of the flavor the freshness and overall service, and unfortunately in my displeasure with the food I had received I forgot different methods of date formatting. However that doesn't take away from the amount grease that that was still coming out the patties and things that you request on your burgers shouldn't look and feel mushy. The only good thing I received was a strawberry smoothie. I have to say that they're smoothies are exceptional.

Fanci Freeze is a cute little place not too far from the capitol. They have a ton of dessert options, but also burgers and other lunch items. They have a patio with multiple tables and chairs and there was a small mister set up for the kids to play in. I got a small sundae with cookie dough. I definately got my money's worth! There was a ton of cookie dough on top. The ice cream was smooth and delicious.

I've always loved coming here over the years. It's quick and tasty! The cashier was absolutely adorable and ready to pop any day now with a boy! I couldn't believe how cheerful she was considering her uncomfortable situation, but kudos to her!

I'm updating my review because the ice cream didn't taste as good as it usually does. Especially after going to one of their competitors...I think there is better soft serve ice cream out there. Regardless, it's Fanci Freeze and I still love it for what it is!

We are in town visiting Boise and heard about this place from my friend back in Ca. It truly is a must bidirectional place if your in Boise. I had a Boston shake and it was great. The strawberry were fresh and delicious. My daughter had a vanilla shake. She said it was awesome. Besides the shakes the atmosphere was great. Small town USA. We ate at the tables and watch as the line get huge to order. I would recommend this place for sure

  • Wayne S.

We went to the window to order. It was very crowded in the small room with no place to be comfortable. I ate fish and chips...others in my party ate hot dogs and burgers. Overall, it was all right. We sat in the tent with the heaters. It wasn't bad.. Wasn't great But it was pretty inexpensive

Because I'm hard-headed, I suppose, & because this joint has been in business a long time, I gave it three tries. I hoped the first two unpleasant experiences were aberrations. The third try has convinced me that it is the norm. Quite simply, the worst cheeseburger I've ever tried to eat, even worse than the Westside Drive-In. Bland, half-done patty, fake cheese, stale bun, yucky sauce. Sheesh. As for the fake ice cream, the only way anyone could think that glop is good is if they've been huffing paint or something. And over 4 dollars for a small milkshake? Seriously? The profit on one of those must be about $3.50.

I am giving 5 stars because the only thing I have tried was amazing but I can't speak to the entire menu. I was told by a Boise local that I had to try the raspberry lemonade they have during the summer. It did not disappoint! They serve it with giant straws and you can suck up entire raspberries through the straw and they put tons of whole raspberries in it! On a hot summer day this can't be beat!

I patroned Fanci Freez with a friend per his recommendation. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the milkshakes were. Thick milkshakes that are tasty can be hard to find. I'll be back again in the future.

    (4)
  • Joe R.

Fanci Freeze rocks the house when it comes to great ice cream dipped in your favorite flavor. Milkshakes are great and so are the specialty drinks. The rest of the food is sub-par as it's all pretty basic fast food. This is the spot for hot summer nights.

This place is exactly what you'd judge it to be just by pulling up. Greasy burgers and fries and ice cream. They have a decent selection of cones and ice cream assortments which are very tasty! Fair prices and outside seating only. Not bad for a fun stop with the friends and fam.

Omg get the raspberry milkshake!!!!!! The French fries come out hot and it's so goood!! Also the best corndog!!! I love the corndog with lots of mustard and the French fries with ranch sauce! Yum! It's really cheap and it tastes good!! Definitely recommend it!!!

This place received its 4th star solely because of their amazing mozzarella stixs!!!! OMG they are the best in the valley!!!! They are good with marinara but amazing with the ranch!! Small dip cones are actually pretty big! My husband loved his chocolate dipped cone and I loved my coconut dipped cone we scarfed them down! Way better than dairy queens! Banana split is HUGE! Great for sharing! Caramel sauce was thin. I also ordered an orange flavor burst in a cup it was okay, and there was some weird mystery green coloring on the bottom that was unappetizing! This place is hopping! Full drive thru and full patio. Been in drive thru line for a while but it's moving pretty steadily for how busy it is. Drive thru speaker interaction could have been a bit friendlier, I'm guessing she was a little short with us because they are so busy! Also she had a hard time hearing us over the speaker at times but no one is perfect. At the window she was taking orders at the same time while handing out our food! She is doing a good job multi tasking :) also gave us a sweet smile once we received all our goodies. So service is overall friendly and they are working hard to accommodate everyone! They forgot my ranch cup that I was charged for but my husband went up to the window and they cheerfully said "sorry about that" and brought him a ranch with a smile lol (2nd visit almost left the parking lot without my water bottle, double check before you leave the drive thru) It's a great place especially for a summertime treat and snack!!

Everything is terrific. Customer service is great. We ALWAYS leave satisfied. Our children are grown and when they come to town we always make a point of coming to Fanci Freeze.

Never again for a corn dog! Sometimes ya just gotta have a corn dog and Pronto Pup is not around. Now don't get me wrong, corn dogs are not my fav food but I had a jones for one. The "homemade" corn dogs at Fanci Freez used to close to the real thing, nice dog, crispy light batter and good. They DO say homemade after all. I got two today but when I bit into one I was sorely disappointed!!! The batter was really thick and REALLY tough and didn't even taste like corn. These tasted like they were fried a couple of days ago and then microwaved when I ordered them. I was bummed out. Didn't even finish them. Guess nothing stays the same but this change was NOT for the better! And they are expensive at $3.09 per dog. Hot dogs are cheap (obviously they are not using a quality dog and I don't even know what to say about the batter. YUK

Awesome Sundae shakes and dipped cones

i grew up going to Fanci Freez so I'm probably not the best independant reviewer... Had a hot fudge and pecan shake. Was amazing. French fries werre good, just a bit too salty. The butterscotch cone was exactly as I remember with great soft serve ice cream and a crispy outside. I absolutely love this place. Four stars just because of the salt.

My kids attend Boise Rock School about four blocks away and it's been an occasional treat to go to Fanci Freeze afterwards. We love thier shakes and the burgers are moist and well made. The crowning jewel, however, was their delicious steak fingers. Tender, juicy pieces of beef dipped in a lightly spiced batter and fried. Yum. Why would anyone go to McDonald's for a quarter pounder when you could have a burger made with fresh mushrooms and swiss at Fanci Freeze for less money? ($5.99 for a meal)

    (5)
  • John B.

Okay, I've read most of the reviews and you people just don't get it. It's not only about the food the food is a little above average for Boise. I'm gonna make this short. For $29 you get two finger steak meals that come with tots and a drink. And a medium onion rings which we had five. Not five orders five onion rings in a cup of all things. When I called and talked to the owner, her reasoning was we have to marinate are steaks for 24 hours and then dip them in the batter and hand fry them. Really? Every restaurant in town pretty much dips their finger sticks and frys them. That doesn't mean they're worth ten times the amount of money. I've been coming to this establishment for over 20 years. I've never really had a bad meal but the price now far far exceed what the food is worth. If you want to spend a lot of money and be hungry when you leave go visit fancy freeze.

**this review is only concerned with their burger/fry fare--as far as ice cream/shakes go, I stand with my previous review of 4 stars** This was our second stop on Burgerpalooza--in search of the best burger in B-town. Our group gave this place an average of 2.40 stars. So, almost to a-ok but not quite there, which is, I believe, a fair score for their burgers. Their highest score came in the fries category (once again Cannonball Jack topping the charts with his 8 of 10 score...that man does love his fries). Their lowest score came in the freshness category. What your dealing with here is a frozen patty, fried and placed on a small, indistinct bun, with limited veggie toppings. A truly ho-hum execution of an American classic. Their fries are similarly ordinary and came out a skosh on the lukewarm side. On the plus side: Their outdoor seating is fun and always full of people. They have a drive thru for convenience sake. Their service is usually friendly enough and though not necessarily fast not inordinately slow either. They have fry sauce and don't make you pay extra for it (yay!). This is a true neighborhood joint and I LOVE coming here on a hot summers eve for a milkshake cool down. However, as far as their burgers and fries go? Meh.

Had the #9 Budget Cheese Burger. It was excellent and only $3.89 with tots and a drink. Would definitely come back here.

This is what I've been looking for! Love the environment, great service, and they have amazing shakes (after you choose your mix from a hug list of flavors). I had a mint chocolate chip with oreo. Next time I go I'll have a hard time trying to try something new. But they have about 5-6 sizes to choose from, so maybe I'll just get 2 of the smallest... Or 5. ;) One of my friends that went with me got a strawberry float, and she said she really liked it, it wasn't to sweet, and it was different in a good way; exactly what she's getting next time. All and all, love it! Can't wait to go again. :)

Cherry scotch and soda... Need I say more? Fanci Freeze is home to many of my all time favorites... And is our family's favorite local spot to hit for ice cream cones after swimming in the summer. I have had some mix ups with incorrect orders and pricing at the drive thru, but both times it seemed to be a new employee. Overall, I like the food and the atmosphere and plan on being a regular for years to come.

We drove by this place and it looked like one of those dives that would be really good but not a lot of people there. Got there and ordered hamburgers fries rotor beer floats and shake. The hamburgers were horrible!!! I mean small soggy tasteless except for all the mayo they flung on it. It was so bad we couldn't finish it. The fries were small and dry but the root beer float and shake we're great. Service was as expected from a high school girl working for the summer, not very friendly or professional. Will not be eating there again not even for their shakes.

It's been hot all week here in Portland, how I wish I'm in Boise. It's going to be hot in Boise too, but at least you guys have Fanci Freez. WHY O WHY, there's no Fanci Freez anywhere else in this world? Get the fresh ice cream milkshake (I had the Raspberry...delish) and get it Boston style. What is Boston style you might ask? Basically you will get a sundae on top your shake and you can choose the flavor as well. I had the Raspberry shake with Coconut sundae on top. It was one of the best things I've ever had. The small size is pretty giant. It was icy, creamy, sweet, delicious, and comforting. Thanks Fanci Freez, now I'm going to crave for your Boston shake for a loooonggg time.

Good ice cream but very inconsistent. Family and I went there on Monday and got a small cone each. It was totally enough and the right size for what we all wanted. Went back on Wednesday of same week and ordered same thing same price. The guy handed us a bite size cone with a few licks worth of ice cream in it. Son also had a big chunk of what seemed like gum in the middle of his ice cream. He threw his out. Went back and had a great banana shake. Real banana in it.

My boyfriend's father brought us here while visiting him. As an ice cream fan this place does not disappoint. I can't remember the name of what we had. It was pretty much a shake with a sundae on top. We shared a large size between my boyfriend and I. It was HUGE. Apparently they have even bigger sizes then that. The ice cream was creamy and the hot fudge was very chocolatey to me. The shake was thick which was great since I didn't want it to melt fast. We had to use the large spoon and straw to eat/drink it. It was worth the trip to stop by this place. The staff was friendly when ordering. We received our food in minutes. The outside seating was great to enjoy with our ice cream since it was a warm afternoon. Over all I will stop by again if in the area. Great shake and great ice cream in general.

Love the Boston Shake! Also, the folks behind the counter are always moving quickly to get your food out fast.

This is a fabulous place to get a bite to eat and a sweet treat, wonderful customer service, I have never had a bad experience once and I eat there four or five times a week. Great food and amazing service, you cannot go wrong.

If you took a trip back in time, you'd expect Fanci Freez to still be there serving up artery-clogging food and ice cream. Decent prices.

    (3)
  • Anna S.

This review is for their shakes! Thick, creamy, and made with REAL ingredients... I like that you can order a "baby" size for $2.50, which is actually plenty! I also appreciate that you can get a "Boston shake", which is a shake with an entire sundae on TOP of it... whoever thought of this was some kind of sick genius.

    (5)
  • Brian H.

If they stuck to just dessert options, I'd give them a higher rating. The food options have never reached anything above diner-level passable for me. The prices for the value meals seem fair until you realize that the burgers are so dinky that they could almost pass for the size of those dollar burgers you get at fast food places. The fries are bleh. The soft-serve ice cream is the reason to go there-- thick and rich and the best I've had in the city. Dairy Queen can't come close. And the amount of options when it comes to various toppings for whatever you order is impressive. The Boston Shake (a shake with a sundae on top) is a meal unto itself and proves to be a little too excessive for my taste, but it's still a tasty treat. The wait can be toe-tappingly long, especially on a hot day obviously. There never seems to be enough workers in there on days like those.

  • Justin H.

Boston shakes are amazing! Try hot fudge over heath shake, amazing

    (5)
  • Ranee S.

There is something about the hot fudge here that makes me crave it fortnightly. Good thing I no longer live anywhere near here. However, I do stop by at least once (or twice) every time I return to Boise. This time the banana seemed a bit off the first time I went for my traditional hot fudge and banana milkshake during this visit - as if it had been mixed with the pineapple or something. I remedied this today by omitting the banana. Hot fudge shake alone was still delicious.

This little drive through/walk up style eatery offers up a much needed dose of nostalgia. We love to come here on hot summer evenings for the best shakes in town. The burgers are great (artery clogging for sure, but oh so yummy!) It's a great place to hang out and poeple watch too. My only disappointment is that they close by 9 Mon-Sat and 8 on Sunday. I'd like to see them open a bit later during the summer months.

  • Bree B.

I love, love, love this place. I've been going here since I was a young girl. For as long as I remember they have had the best ice cream cones dipped in the hard shell coating. Even their burgers and fries are amazing. The burgurs are actually unique, not too big and not too small. Just right for me. There is something about the ingredients they put on their burgers that is unique, I can taste em right now just thinking about it. I love the location and the staff always rocks. I have found that if you're going through the drive through it might take some time, but it's best to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere in the summer. I recomend this place for a plain ol' burger, fries, and some BOMB fry sauce!

    (4)
  • Brian W.

While I love fine dining in all forms I have a special soft spot for the classic American institutions, small places, diners, drive-ins etc. and I love it when a place delivers on its promise. Enjoying a great strawberry shake, which is always my first hurdle for an ice cream place.

  • Julie E.

Fanci Freez is just up the street from my office, so I go once or twice a year, during the summer, because the only seating is outside and sometimes you just need some sunshine! I've had better burger stand fare, and sometimes the flow of people is a bit chaotic, but overall Fanci Freez is a decent place for a quick bite. I can't speak on their frozen treats, so you might refer to other reviews (Ophelia and Olivia speak well on the frozen goodies). I will say that their 'tater gems' are good, and I love that you can get a 'barrel' of them. One of the first things I tried when I began working downtown in 2007 was the chicken nuggets.. I do NOT recommend them. Oh and the street noise from State Street can get kind of loud. If you have several people in your group, have one procure a table while others are in line, on a sunny day the shaded spots can be hard to come by.

One of the best Burgers in town, and the milkshakes are awesome too. Very glad they are teamed up with Big Bun now, the two best privately owned fast food joints in Ada County.

    (5)
  • Colleen P.

Stick to the shakes & ice cream (delish!). Skip the food - they lost a star for using pre-packaged fry sauce --- blasphemy!!! Tots were nothing special, either. And everyone knows you need something salty to go with your sweets. Totally unfortunate. Atmosphere is perfect for an ice cream place in the summer, & the kids love it.

    (4)
  • Diana L.

I came here during lunch hour on a weekday. It was swarmed with high school kids like myself, but I had my food in less than 10 minutes- which is very impressive in my opinion. I had a small order but I can say that both the milkshakes and the fries were delicious. I'll definitely be revisiting!

  • Zoe F.

My husband and I had lunch here this week. We ordered the fish & "chips" and a bacon cheese burger to share. Fries were over cooked and dry, burger greasy and ehhh. No chips - just fries. The fish was just ok. For $20 we expected something better. We have had worse but would have had a better meal at Wendy's or Burger King. Won't be back.

4th of July - 9:49pm. The sign reads OPEN TILL 11! So, I decide to pull in and take my "new to Boise" friends to my favorite ice cream spot in town. The guy behind the window said, "sorry bro - we're closed" with a smile on his face. I told him, "the sign says you're open until 11 and it's 9:49...So, do you close at 11 or 10 and if that's the case you're still open for 10 more minutes." He responded, "it's Fourth of July, bro...there are no rules". I hope you get fired you arrogant brat. If you were my employee, I would fire you in an instant. When I worked in a shop, I worked until the store was closed and if I still had customers - I stayed open, because it was the right thing to do. I was so embarrassed standing on the street with my friends. So, flabbergasted by the laziness of Boise's minimum wage crowd. I'm not sure I'll be visiting Fanci Freez ever again. :/

Yummy yummy ice cream! This place is really good. I only tried their ice cream but im pretty sure im gonna go back there to try more of their menu. Even though its winter time and cold here in Boise, ice cream never tasted so delicious! Made me feel like a little kid again - eating ice cream during dinner time. HA! :)

So my wife and I went back to Boise to visit my parents and attend and wedding and while we were there we went to Fanci Freez 4 times to get milkshakes (Total trip was ten days). My parents hadn't had their shakes before and after the first time my dad said it is a good thing you don't live here or we would be buying these all the time and get fat! Good thing but Sad thing. Until next time!

It isn't fancy: it's a soft serve stand with some picnic tables. But the chocolate malt was malty and the tater tots were fresh out of the fryer, and at a place like this that's what you want.

    (4)
  • Doug W.

Great drive-through soft-serve ice cream. The food is ok; the ice cream and all the variations are what this place is all about. Huge favorite of the kids.

  • J B.

The coolest thing about this place is how old school it is. I can go so far that I believe the food could use an update. The patty was kind of small compared to the size of the bun. It was good but I think if they had a bigger beef patty this place could be epic. They have a huge selection of treats. I am not really sugar person but if I was I would give this place another star...
