Family Table Restaurant - this restaurant has been around for years and years, as an A&W, and a few other things prior to that. In 1973, the current owners (isn't that nice to hear, and it's 2012!), bought the place, and named it the Family Table. It's good food, at good prices. They are open 6am to 8pm daily, and prices are very good, with lots of food. Interior - close quarters, with lots of tables! I'm not sure how many they can hold, but it's quite a few. Considering this is a college town (Luther College), feeding lots of people, whether it's students, or parents/family visiting for Luther's Parents' Weekend, or Homecoming, whatever, the table space is a must! Oh, did I mention that it's clean too! Menu - Breakfast, sandwiches, dinner. We were there for breakfast. My nephew had the Texas Bill's Pancake Meal - two large buttermilk pancakes, hash browns, and choice of bacon, sausage, or ham. It was quite a bit of food, and for a 16 year old - it fit the bill. Price $5.79 My husband had the Two x Four (two by four) - two eggs, two pancakes, two strips of bacon, and two sausage, also very delicious. Price $5.79 I had the All American - two eggs, toast, hash browns, and bacon, no complaints here. Price $5.49. My niece (the one who is attending Luther College - in her second year), as well as my sister, both built their own omelets. Their basic cheese omelet is $5.49, and each additional item is 55 cents each. My brother-in-law had the pancakes. No complaints from anyone. Service - very good, not in your face. The staff works very hard, on their feet all the time, and they have to be, as the place is always crowded. That alone, should tell you something. Good food, good prices, great service, clean, quaint, small town where "everyone knows your name." You CAN'T beat that! We will go back to the Family Table Restaurant, the next time we are in Decorah, Iowa, visiting our niece @ Luther College. Thanks!
Great spot to grab breakfast... not to expensive either:-)
5-Stars, classic diner breakfast. Busy, fast service. Breakfast was great. Inexpensive.

Had lunch there today with my advisor from Luther College. Dr Pillsbury is my advisor took me there for lunch I had the food is always warm served in hot plate delicious the staff is always in uniform I served 35 years and hospitality and you should always you should know something about a restaurant when you eat there if you go early enough you'll be sure to have good parking like I did this morning we ate at 1130 it wasn't cramped the food is always always always and the drinks if you're going to have a little nosh before dinner you can do that there also because their license for liquor . If you go out to eat there on Saturday during the season you know to hit a couple garage sales and you can get all the good sales without having to get up so early to drive around town and Decorah to find them tell us all day this is Val the older senior Luther telling you to have a safe weekend bye
Good Mexican food -- definitely better than what you'd expect to find in a small Iowa town.
Salsa was good. Food average but not bad. Margarita could have used some tequila in it. Overall not a bad place but far from best I've had.

Rubaiyat

A nice restaurant, nicely decorated. The wine list was four+ pages long. Service was very attentive with a friendly waitstaff. Wine and food arrived with nice timing. A very pleasant experience. Best of all the food was interesting and tasted good. I was surprised to fine a restaurant of this quality in Decorah.
My wife and I recently moved to Decorah from Chicago and Rubaiyat immediately instituted itself as our favorite restaurant. The menu changes seasonally, and we always watch to make sure that we visit a couple times during each menu. Fresh, local food prepared by a chef who understands how to combine flavors to create cohesive meals. We've ordered pretty much everything -- pork, steak, chicken, fish, duck, pasta -- and leave impressed every time. If you are unsure what to get, go for the pork chop, you won't be disappointed. Portions are good, especially considering the quality of the bread & soup or salad that come with every entree. The wait staff fosters a particularly friendly ambiance for an upscale restaurant -- we celebrate special occasions at Rubaiyat, but we can also bring our one year old for a cozy dinner out. It is worth calling ahead, but you can usually walk in and sit immediately. The bar area is always hopping and they have great beers on tap and an extensive wine list. Rubaiyat is not open for lunch but does have the best Sunday brunch in town -- varied standard menu, quiche of the day, bloody mary bar -- at downright cheap prices. Don't miss it!
This place is amazing!!!! Before you even get your food they bring you a soup or salad. Also a loaf of bread and the soup I got made the taste buds go to heaven!! It was tomato basil. The bread was fantastic also!! =) Then when the main course came, it was just amazing. After the main course, our waitress brought out a desert tray and there are no words to describe how heavenly the desert tasted!!

The place has a very relaxed, homey atmosphere with friendly, courteous service. You won't find many better places for breakfast.
It's a fabulous neighborhood diner. Wonderful service. Yummy homestyle food. Amazing cinnamon rolls and caramel rolls. A cozy place to relax and enjoy some small town charm and great food.
I'm not a bread or sugar eater so I was a little concerned but the menu had lots of options. I ended up with the Mexican omelet and loved it! Perfect for low carb-ers, even brought me sour cream on the side. Clean, friendly and delicious!

In short: Every Dairy Queen in the world aspires to be a Whippy Dip. I only get up to Decorah once a year or so; long enough that I manage to forget, every time, just how amazing this place is. The soft serve is perfect: creamy, clean, and rich. It's made from real milk from a local dairy. And it's unbelievably inexpensive. They're purists, so they only have chocolate or vanilla, or a swirl of those two. But for extra flavor you can get any number of mix-ins. They also have a limited menu of snack-type food ... but I've never tried any of it! No trip to Decorah is complete without a trip to this place. I think that's written into the town charter.
Local favorite. Recommended by a friend. Appears popular because of long lines but we found the lines were due to super slow service. Took 20 minutes to get served with only 2 customers ahead of us! The owner was behind the line but was doing nothing to help serve. Tasty soft serve but ours will be a "one time only" experience. Go only if you have lots of time to kill.
A fun, tasty, classic ice cream stand. Service can sometimes be slow but only when there's a huge line in the summer. Great access off the bike trails.

We had dinner here on 24 April 2015. Delicious fresh food, good value, nice variety, friendly service. We ordered some of their vegetarian options.
Pie. Yum. Didn't try the prime rib. Probably should have. The pork chop was a little underdone. Drinks are various, generous and hilarious. A great list of funny Midwestern wine mixes. The only thing I have against the place is finding it! Try to get directions from a local and it's "go up the hill, go down the hill, turn left and left and left". Which is pretty much spot on but still very confusing. "Just behind the Super 8" is a little easier but it's still very much tucked away.
We're in Decorah a number of times every year and have frequently enjoyed the Stone Hearth Inn. It's conveniently situated directly behind the Super 8 and just down the road from Country Inns. The menu is basic American but the prime rib and burgers are very good and reasonably priced. A local brewery with very good product, Toppling Goliath, is available. We loved the Gold Nugget!! The staff is great and gracious and very accommodating. On this trip, we ate dinner here twice in two days. I had the prime rib dinner both days and was very happy with it! Laurie had the prime rib the first night and share fettuccine with chicken and mushrooms with our grand-daughter the second night. Our grand-daughter, 3, took a sudden turn and was acting up and wanting to leave. The staff did their best to placate her but in the end, were very gracious about packing everything to go. Back at the hotel, the feisty grand-daughter loved the fettuccine and prime rib and wanted more!

Wow. Best BBQ I have had in ages . You must get the pulled pork. So tender and perfectly seasoned, doesn't even need sauce. But, great sauces too!
Consistent way to break up the drive. Pickles are a little on the odd side but one can always depend on the rest.
I had the beef brisket platter with bacon green beans and smoked beans. Green beans were cooked perfectly and fresh. No canned beans here. Side jalapeno cornbread was a nice extra. Highly recommend this place.

I came here while I was in town with my parents and was excited to try and new place and I wasn't disappointed. I am a very picky eater and they accommodated my requests very kindly. Our server Kim was outstanding. Best service I have had in a long time. She makes all the desserts and her tuxedo cake is worth the calories. I had a salmon salad (healthy and just what the doctor ordered) with the cucumber salad (delicious) but had a bite of my dad's beefy j (pretty good) and fish chowder (yummy) as well as a bite of my mom's gyro burger (which was delicious).
The staff and clientele are friendly! A chef-driven small restaurant, the food is really good and tasty. The daily specials and menu variances keep things interesting. One of the best places to eat, IMHO, in Decorah! Kudos!
We stopped in here after visiting the Hatchery in early June. The pickle in the name got me as I love pickles. It was crowded when we arrived but, we were soon seated with menus. My first choice was a bowl of homemade fish chowder which was outstanding. Sort of similar to NE Clam chowder but, better. Next we tried what we really came for, the pickles. Simply delicious. Our main course of fresh fish was excellent. The food was great and the service very good. Add this to your list of eateries when you visit this area.

Happy Joe’s

105 E Water St

Reviews:
Dude. Duuude. Happy Joe's set the bar for Taco Pizza in my opinion. As a child of 9, I first encountered their taco pizza in Davenport, Iowa. When I got out of colelge and moved here, I could pretty much subsist on pizza 4 days of the week; Mabe's, Pizza Ranch buffet on Wednesday, $5 medium pizza special at Domino's on Thursday, and Taco Pizza Tuesday buffet at Happy Joe's. The buffet consisted not only of Taco Pizza, but 3 DIFFERENT varieties of taco pizza, soft and hard shell tortillas, and a full taco bar. No one ever showed but me. I wonder if it still goes on? It was totally awesome, though, and even though it wasn't a healthy lifestyle, it was always good to know I had the options. There was also an ice cream option, and if you told them it was your birthday, they would run the siren and bring you some ice cream. Rockin' good!
We had just arrived in town for my niece's college graduation from Luther College. We had driven 3.5 hours from Minneapolis-St. Paul, checked into the hotel, and now needed food. I saw the sign for the pizza place across the street, but decided to go to Happy Joe's Pizza instead. In my opinion - Happy Joe's Pizza is ok. It is nothing spectacular. Knowing that Decorah, Iowa is a college town, and it was Thursday night, I expected more people to be in the place. There were 4 other people there, not what I expected. Interior - the inside needs to be updated, as it feels outdated, very worn. It feels like an old 1950's A&W place. The prices were fine, the service was ok, but it really needs a face lift, and a good cleaning. Parking - street Food - the pizza was just ok, nothing spectacular. In my opinion, we should have gone across the street to the other pizza place in town.
Great time! Great service. Great food. It's been decades since I've eaten here, glad I came back - will be back again, soon, will definitely not wait 30 plus years before I go back!
