In short: Every Dairy Queen in the world aspires to be a Whippy Dip. I only get up to Decorah once a year or so; long enough that I manage to forget, every time, just how amazing this place is. The soft serve is perfect: creamy, clean, and rich. It's made from real milk from a local dairy. And it's unbelievably inexpensive. They're purists, so they only have chocolate or vanilla, or a swirl of those two. But for extra flavor you can get any number of mix-ins. They also have a limited menu of snack-type food ... but I've never tried any of it! No trip to Decorah is complete without a trip to this place. I think that's written into the town charter.

Local favorite. Recommended by a friend. Appears popular because of long lines but we found the lines were due to super slow service. Took 20 minutes to get served with only 2 customers ahead of us! The owner was behind the line but was doing nothing to help serve. Tasty soft serve but ours will be a "one time only" experience. Go only if you have lots of time to kill.

A fun, tasty, classic ice cream stand. Service can sometimes be slow but only when there's a huge line in the summer. Great access off the bike trails.

Very good ice cream! I had a vanilla "tornado" (blizzard) with M&Ms for $4 and it was huge. Always order the small or baby here. They do not take cards at all - cash only. Fun fact: in Vermont, this would be called a "creemee stand", almost every town has one, and they're very popular.

Locally-owned ice cream stand similar in feel and offerings to Dairy Queen. Broad list of toppings for mix-ins includes standouts like cookie dough and cheese cake. Cult favorite in town, so be prepared to stand in line during peak times.

I don't get it. I see all of these rave reviews and I'm like..."It's just ice cream" and it's not even the best I had. I asked the girl waiting on me, "What makes this place special? What is something that is like Whippy Dip classic?" She gave me a vapid look and said, "Well, lots of people like the cookie dough." I got a vanilla cone. I think the best part of this place is it's name and it's nostalgic feel that those who frequented here get. Had the t-shirts not been $22 I would have got one. Whippy Dip. Whippy Dip. Whippy Dip. Yep, just fun saying it.

Decorah....you can ride your bike from one end of town to the other in 10m and maybe see 1 or 2 cars. With that said....there aren't a lot of choices for soft serve ice cream and other delicious deserts if you don't want the fast food horror show of McDonalds. You will be pleased....this is a staple of Decorah...will be around for ever and they do serve some quick lunch items. Besides....with the name of Whippy Dip you have to try if you are in this town.

If you want ice cream, from one of those small, walk-up ice cream places, located in a small town, the Whippy Dip is for you! While visiting our niece, who attends Luther Collge, in Decorah, Iowa, we stopped at the Whippy Dip. It has your typical ice cream sundaes, malts, shakes, ice cream cones, and tornadoes (the dairy queen blizzard), and more, all served with the small town smile and hospitality. Not much more to say, except it's a local favorite, as it should be. Fun and yummy! Who wants ice cream?!

Soft-serve twist cone on the way home from the pool. Chocolate-banana malt after a baseball game. A slushy whip on a hot summer evening before the thunder storm hits. Bad puns on the iconic sign. What's not to like?

Great product, unexpected quality service - I don't know how they can remain so pleasant and calm in the chaos that is the Whippy Dip -- there seems to always be a line of eager ice cream connoisseurs awaiting the delightful Whippy Dip experience. If you are in Decorah, for a day, a week, or live here -- the Whippy Dip is a MUST.

Ground Zero for soft-serve style ice cream in a good ol-fashion setting.

This place is clearly a staple to Decorah and the college crowd. Ice cream is yummy! Be sure to stop here in the summer since they are closed in the winter.

I was so excited to bring our children to the Whippy Dip for the first time last summer. I have some great childhood memories of standing in line for a slush. The kids loved it! What a great spot to stop by after swimming all day in the hot sun. The Whippy Dip is the best!

The Whippy Dip is a Decorah institution, but not because it serves "terrific ice cream". It serves two flavors of very airy, soft serve that is already melting before it hits the cone. So don't order anything in a cone on a warm day unless you want it to run all over your arm. The Whippy Dip's long lines are mainly due to its location (next to the river between the town and college), goofy name, nostalgia, prices, and "witty" signs (feast on our foot long, put your tulips on our cone, etc...). The social element also contributes to its popularity. So if you want to experience a slice of Decorah/Luther College life and are happy with Dairy Queen-esque fare, it is fine. But if you want real hand-dipped ice cream, try the locally-owned Sugar Bowl Ice Cream Company (they serve Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream) or Happy Joe's.

A local favorite and a must stop with visiting friends, but one can hardly eat only this ice cream all summer long... No real cream ice cream here.

Fantastic. Town landmark. Must do. Terrific ice cream.

This is a great summertime hangout for all ages! The staff is friendly and the ice cream is delicious. There is another ice cream place that is right downtown Decorah, but the Whippy Dip is much better in my opinion! This is a great place to go after a long day of swimming at the pool or on a hot late August night after studying (if you attend Luther). There is only one picnic table outside, so you shouldn't expect to be able to find a place to sit. But, the food and the atmosphere are so good that that never seems to matter. Whether you are a local or just passing through Decorah, you should visit the Whippy Dip.
