This review is only for the "ahi poke nachos". A must if you go or are staying at the Hyatt! :)

This garners four stars based on the Nachos. Oh my, they were grande indeed. The pulled pork nachos were crazy good. It came with multicolored really salty (the way I like them ) chips layered with multiple great things like sour cream, guac, a fabulous roasted salsa we got an additional side of, olives, green peppers and this psuedo velveeta like cheese product that made one gooey fabulous mess. I know it is poolside but drinking a margarita from a plastic cup makes me testy. So does being in a beautiful place with wall to wall tall cement buildings all clamoring for a 1/2 mile of what was a pristine beach. But love those nachos!

Would go everyday! Resort prices but large portions, tasty, and healthy Recommend: Ahi salad, chicken salad Fish tacos, caprese sandwich, chicken sandwich Informal place, order inside, two tables inside. To go size is just as big.

Such a convenient place to have lunch when on property. After a nice swim or walk on the beach, you can roam into this great area to grab a bite to eat. Then open at 11am and offer a nice assortment of lunch and kids meal. The kids meal seem very reasonable. We ordered kalua pig nachos which was packed with the pork, guacamole, olives, cheese and salsa, hummus, fried beans, (slightly spicy) lunch for the kids and ended with a scrumptious chocolate cake. The service seems like a hit or miss so far. The first time the waitress was horrible. Second time, another waitress was very kind and pleasant. Overall, a good simple place!

This place is so simple, and I really liked that. After spending an hour at the pool, it was nice to take an easy eating break. No shirt or shoes required haha. We started off with a couple mai tais. They cost $13 each!!! But they were extremely strong, to the point where I didn't actually finish mine which was really sad. They were good, but so strong. For my entree I had the "local style" flat bread. Flat bread with BBQ sauce, pineapple, pork, and mozzarella (I had them hold the onions and cabbage). It was delicious! We also had a side of fries - very tasty. My husband had one of the burgers and he said it was good. Overall - great place! Easy good food.

Really good poolside drinks, loved the nachos and Cobb salad. Didn't eat there another time than when I ordered from the pool, but we kept coming back. Could hear people screaming at the TV from the pool so they were enjoying the games, nice touch for sports fans and not a bother to those lounging.

I'm not going to lie, I was impressed by the quality of the food that we came to have dinner here twice. Perfect for the kiddos as well (crayons and something to color on was provided along with a kids menu). Food: Grassfed burger with grilled mushrooms and onions - Burger was cooked exactly how I asked, served on a pretzel bun. Its the type of burger that gets all over the place, so obviously it belongs in your face! lol I say it was close to a 1/3 of a pound or more, great flavors and perfect size. The pickle on the side was simply a bonus. Furikake Fries (seaweed, sesame, garlic) - It tasted more like garlic fries with furikake seasoning sprinkled all over it. Wife was hesitant to order this but after trying one, she couldn't stop eating them. The fresh garlic gave it a kick which was a nice surprise. Inbetween a wedge and a regular size fry, these were pretty awesome and the servicing size was large enough to share. The wasabi ranch dipping sauce was also a zinger! Fish and Chips - Fluffy yet crunchy batter, fish tasted fresh and was flaky. Only wish there were 3 pieces instead of 2! Either way, these didn't last long! Slider Trio - Blackened Ahi, Kalua Pulled Pork, and a grassfed burger with blue-cheese I believe. All were unique, bold flavors, perfect cook and seasoning. Definitely filling for a "appetizer" and could be eaten as a main entree. Favorite out of the three was the blackened ahi. Great sear on the fish, nice and thick, pink in the middle. Ceviche - I'm used to the mexican ceviche, so this one had a twist. Something inside of this made it have a hint of sweetness. Not bad, just different. I would probably pass on this one. Mac n Cheese (kids) - super cheesy, my daughter loved it! Service was great, even though they are under staffed during the sunset/evening hours. We even witnessed the chef come out of the kitchen and walked around to each table asking how the food was. The ONLY thing that sucked was the prices... most entrees started at $17, but for the quality that you're getting, it was worth it.

Typical corporate Hyatt food- such garbage. A. $38 entree of ahi ( I doubt it's local fresh caught today ) on top of a round of rice and four not ripe asparagus- just a monolith of flavor and texture. Another dish we ordered was the volcano ahi, more uninteresting flavors on top of bad lettuce. Sweet potato fries- a huge portion of frozen sweet potato fries - just boring and bad. We also had mahi mahi and rice that was apparently acceptable to our third diner. I know- the Hyatt has you- you don't feel like going off property and you are captive. I wouldn't head back to this spot or any of Hyatt's offerings after this. What a poor effort Hyatt -you can do better but will you. Really, I feel sick.

Been here at least 20 times in many visits to Maui,, great service, unreal drinks, I recommend the Mutiny drink for sure. Angus sliders are out of this world as are the boneless buffalo chicken and the pizza is delicious. The bar staff is super friendly and service is impeccable, and even though I come maybe every 6 months they remember me every time. Lastly this is like the only place in this resort area that actually is open till midnight and serves food till then also, this is a must for anyone coming to Kaananpali Beach are resorts!!!

I had a decent cheeseburger here. It was large and filling but made me walk a few miles after the meal to get rid of that uncomfortable too full feeling. The server needs some lessons in manners and how to take an order. I was basically rattling off what I wanted on my burger and was interrupted when she said, "Hun, that comes with it". I said I can read, but I don't want the pickle and I would also like some mustard with it. First of all for you servers out there, I don't like being called Hun. Just keep it professional and say Sir. And of course my burger came with this big ass pickle. I'm sure the F & B guy would have loved to save a little on the food costs. The beer was just okay and not very cold. Hyatt needs to make sure that the beer is chilled.

Came here twice since we stay at the Hyatt. I order a to go the first time. The drink is light, had a slider and nacho. Slider is not bad. Nacho doesn't taste as good. Came back at night because the gym was flooded, Had some drinks. Overall it's ok. Nothing special, would want some peanut for the drinks would be good to get us to drink more but the again the drink is pretty light.

We came for an afternoon drink and later a nightcap. ATMOSPHERE: The former Pavilion self-service buffeteria is now a more upscale eatery. Gone thankfully is that nasty sandbox floor where the tables are, replaced by normal tile/stone work. The colors are bold. The umbrellas were torn and tattered. It's located poolside which is convenient. The bar is pretty big and has great views of the pool and ocean. MENU: Burgers, sandwiches, salads. BEVERAGE: Heineken - Boring, I know, but I'm a beer guy. SERVICE: Our female server was friendly, professional, and attentive. OVERALL: Pricey, but what resort isn't? Nice ambiance, good service.

Every time we visit Umalu, we have the most fantastic time! The drinks are great, the food is great, and the costal/poolside ambiance can't be beat. Bartenders Glenn and David are a great team, and they make us laugh every time we visit. These guys make every visit enjoyable.

    Chef Jared Krausen presented a fabulous Poke and Ahi tuna salad was to die for! The Volcano seared ahi tuna with ahi sashimi kula Lettie's mango avocado edamame candied pecans crystallized ginger dressing so light with wasabi aioli ;

  • Rachel M.

If you are staying at the Hyatt, it's a good place for poolside or outdoor dining. The food isn't bad, but is not worth the $15 average price tag. It's what I expected for convenient resort dining. Some of the better items are the Volcano Seared Ahi Salad, Kalua Pork Sandwich, "Dakine" Chicken Sandwich, and Kalua Pork Quesadilla. You can skip on the Fish Tacos and Nachos Grande. Cocktails are around $13 with different daily specials like Mai Tais for $8. When we rented a cabana for a whole day, it was nice that our waitress checked up on us often.

  • Serene E.

Ordered Kalua pork nachos. What could be better than that? So disappointing. No flavor. Had chicken Katsu that came with Mac salad ( but had potatoes in it) and rice. It doesn't come with the traditional bulldog sauce, but with ketchup. It's poolside bar food so I can't really complain, but don't come down for a decent meal. The service was great

  • Sapna D.

We ended up eating here due to the sheer convenience of being in the hotel. The food was decent but VERY overpriced. The atmosphere was nice, but eating there once was more than enough.

  • April C.

For bar food pretty good. We had on different days, salad, fish and chips, loaded fries and many drinks. The staff is excellent and a pleasure to be around. Very courteous and helpful, would go back there before driving into some of the town bars for food and drink.

If there has ever been a restaurant to return to, this is the one! While the food is mainly traditional bar food with a Hawaiian twist there is one aspect to Umalu that puts it a step above the rest. That thing is simple: Glenn. While Larry over at the Hyatt's Grotto Bar will make you a Mai Tai so strong that your wife will be throwing sunscreen bottles at you, Glenn will treat you will class and compliment your significant others at what fine bar-goes you are. His drinks are first class; his service is world class. Give him a big tip and ask to hear a story or seven.

  • The O.

If you are on Hyatt property and don't want to go off, this place will do. The food is average and overpriced for what you get. Beautiful bar and setting with friendly service!

    (3)
  • Jin D.

Expensive and not tasty. My chicken katsu was $19 and cold. I can get better, fresher food for $8-9. Avoid.

  • Andrea Marie B.

I vacationed alone in Maui and felt extremely welcomed and taken care of by the bartender Glenn. Aside from the incredible frozen drinks, Mai tais, pizza, and breathtaking ambiance, Glenn made it even more amazing. He was on top of getting drinks for me, and just made my overall experience at the Hyatt a fabulous one. I would highly recommend umalu, Glenn, and if you're a chocolate lover, their chocolate rehab frozen drink... To die for!!!

    (5)
  • Katherine M.

Hawaiian pizza is perfection! Get the "Diamond Margarita" - it's $18 but you only need 2 or 3 of those strong drinks! "Skinny" drinks are excellently made with coconut water!"

  • Michael F.

My mother and I have been here before about two years ago and the last time we were here was great. However, this time was not the greatest. The bartenders were not very attentive, nor friendly. Drinks were moderate and the food was good. Overall the experience wasn't the best.

  • Doug R.

I went there for dinner and the atmosphere would have been great, however they were blasting classic rock from the attached bar. Even sitting as far away from the bar as possible, the music was obnoxiously loud and drowned out all sounds of the ocean. For being a more casual poolside bar / restaurant, I felt their prices were a bit high even by Hawaii standards. Average cocktails were in the $12-15 range which is significantly higher than many of the surrounding restaurants. My wife had a pepperoni pizza, at $25 I might add, which was marginal at best. The next day as a leftover it was down right terrible and after a few bites we threw it out. How do you completely screw up pepperoni pizza? On the flip side I had a cesar salad with blackened chicken which delicious. Their choice of music (classic rock doesn't quite fit in with the Hawaiian vibe amongst the tiki torches) and excessively loud volume which they played it really hurt the atmosphere. A generally overpriced menu for casual dining combined with some bad food and some good food yields me with a 2 star rating. I will not be coming back here since there are many excellent choices nearby.

Very nice happy hour from 11-12. $8 Mai Tai's. Nice place to rest, drink some reasonably priced cocktails, and watch your family/friends jet skiing. Thank you Adriana

We stayed at the Hyatt and had the opportunity to eat here multiple times. The chicken Caesar salad is amazing...skip the hot dog. My boyfriend tried almost all of the appetizers and gave rave reviews. Perfect pool food. The bartenders are super friendly but the drinks can be a little pricey. Take advantage of their happy hours, which at noon are $8 and from 4-5 pm are $4 for certain drinks (or at least that is what it was when we stayed there last month)!

We decided to check out kannapali, drove from Wailea. Read about the happy hour here so decided to start here and make our way down the long beachfront path past other resorts According to online resources happy hour from. 4-6. We arrived about 4:15 and were told happy hour was now from 5-6. Ok, not a problem, we let the waitress's know we would probably be back during happy hour. She acted annoyed but no big. We took a nice long walk and ended up having a drink along the way at the westin. Got back to the Hyatt about 5:15. The same waitress coldly greeted us, her name tag said Jessica I think, blonde in her late 20s early thirties. Any how good was good we ordered onion rings and sliders. My complaint with the food is order of onion rings was literally 4 smallish onion rings. Really? There were only $4 bucks but a dollar per small onion ring leaves me nothing to feel happy about. That aside my biggest gripe is the server. We've been on island for 10 days and only had wonderful happy engaging service. This server was very unpleasant, quietly rude I would say. The sunset drum song and dance was great!!

David and Becca were perfect and took great care of us. They dealt perfectly with our late night drink and TV requests and made sure we had a good night.

Mai Thai Mondays are good, $8 Mai Thais all day. Aside from that I ordered 5 different items from here while staying at the Hyatt and enjoyed 0 of them. That is some of the worst odds of any restaurante I have been to. Extremely bland flavors, but this is a common theme with every restaurante on this strip. Only gave two stars for the Mai Thai mondays

    (2)
  • Andrew K.

The atmosphere is nice for an easy casual dinner. The drinks are a tad overpriced for what you get. I had the 'mutiny on the carthagian', which wasn't that good or strong for $14. I'm sure the happy hour prices would be better. The create your own pizza was delicious and large enough to share or take home for breakfast the next morning which I did. My partner in crime got the pork quesadillas. Very tasty but you only get two this slices for a quesadilla wish it was four. Someone else posted a photo of the pork quesadilla. Think we may return for the create your own healthy dinner. Lots of options and good food. Just a tad expensive when you get your bill. I guess you have to expect that on the beach on vacation.

Best poke on Maui (well I didn't get to try Foodland). Fish tacos great as well! I didn't give 5 stars because drinks and pours were inconsistent.

I was waiting for my husband who waos in a meeting, so I decided to have a beer and the ahi poke nachos. OMG! Sooooo ono!!! The bartending staff was nice, friendly, not too chatty (which I prefer). Nice atmosphere, yummy food, cool staff. PS - The bartender gave me extra taro chips!

  • Darren P.

some of the best food on the resort enjoy solo or with cohorts plenty of people by the pool or bar catch the game where you sit, no matter how far the service is great whether its lunch or breakfast buffet korean bulgogo sandwhich and the maui onion flatbread enjoyed with some taro chips, happily my stomach was fed there is not a lot that is offered on the menu list however the tasty in-house drinks will make up for their lack of endeavor great choice to eat here when too lazy to leave the hotel the birds will hover at your table no matter how loud you yell and thus ends my sad attempt at poetry to help break some of my yelp review monotony

    (4)
  • Geneva H.

I don't get it. Why 5 stars or even 4 stars? I thought it was incredibly over priced (yes, I know it's a hotel in Maui but still...). We split a barbecued pork sandwich. It was sooo salty. Yuck. Our waitress was very friendly but it took 30-40 minutes to get our bill. So our bill was $30 for a sandwich and onion rings. No booze. LAME!

  • Gina B.

So Umalu... where to start... there food ranges from awesome to ehhh... so, I have to go w/a-ok... The fish tacos were ok, but I got sick afterwards. :( The poke nachos were off the chain... seriously! I would marry the chef. Is he available? The the rest... pass... They have a really unimpressive selection...only restaurant in the resort open for lunch. Uggh... Terrible selection for a gluten free. You get tired of this QUICK after 10 days!

  • Jennifer A.

We stayed at the Westin and walked the beach walk to Umalu. Very nice scenery. The tables are set up right by the ocean and pool. We came here to grab a bite to eat and listen to live music which was advertise till 10pm but the band left at 8pm. Its just expensive salad, burgers, and drinks. Our waitress was also very rude and suggested for us and another table to eat at Japengo.

  • Joy L.

This the only eatery open in the afternoon at the Hyatt. The service was pleasant though slow. The mia tai was the worst I have ever had (totally tasteless). Additionally, I sliders with grilled onions and blue cheese were also tasteless. On a positive note, the Maui onion rings were very good. Probably will walk to Whaler's Village or drive into Lahaina next time.

Stopped here for a quick bite as we were passing through. I had clam chowder and a Mai Tai. Both were great! The staff was attentive, friendly, and professional. Definitely recommend!

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency so I'm a little bias about Umalu. By comparison, I also had the chance to eat at the Poolside Grill at the Grand Waliea (Waldorf Astoria) and came back with a great appreciation for Umalu. Food and drink prices are a little higher than people might be used to, but for a resort poolside restaurant they are completely reasonable and I dare say the food is really good. The Grand Wailea was at least $4 more per item and $2 more per drink and neither was close to the same quality. The other three places to get food at the Hyatt are all much more overpriced in my opinion. Fish tacos, Ahi nachos, quesadillas were really good and even the hot dog is 1/4 all beef and done well. Beer is $7 and mixed drinks are $12-18...reasonable given that you're at a resort. Happy hour is a mixed bag. They do $4 Mai Tai's and beer along with some food which is a steal, however, its only from 4-5pm..literally a happy "hour." They were also strict about making sure it ended right at 5. I get that the prices are super low, but come on, give people at least 4-6 or 3-5pm. Bartenders and servers were consistently friendly and helpful throughout the week as well.

    (4)
  • Luca R.

The food is edible but far from being good. The service is nice, the setting is kind of too busy for me. We has a cesar salad that had way too much mayo. The fish tacos were better. The pina colada wasn't good. Being at the hawaii i would expect a better quality drink of that kind.

    (2)
  • Jessica H.

Best pool bar in Maui! We have stayed at the Hyatt twice and on this trip (honeymoon) we stayed at the Westin. We still made it a point to go to Umalu and recognized many of the bartenders and had a great time! You also cant beat their Happy hour (food and drinks) from 4-6. Great atmosphere and ambiance and cant wait to go next time we are in Maui.

    (5)
  • Danielle F.

Ya know, there's something about Umalu that screams cheesy. Maybe it's the singing man in the corner of the place that makes you feel like you could be at your cousin from Jersey's wedding. (I can say this because I have cousins from Jersey) That said, the staff is very friendly and there is a lot of activity during happy hour that makes the place come alive. I was really hoping the drinks would be good. I enjoyed watching the sunset here but I did not enjoy my happy hour Mai Tai which was undrinkable. Everything comes in a plastic cup which is nice because its portable but who wants to drink an expensive foo foo ($12) out of a plastic cup?

  • Grace M.

I ate here just about EVERY DAY for lunch and twice for dinner during my stay at the Hyatt! Seriously - best ever. And you wouldn't think that of a restaurant that is poolside of your hotel. But the appetizers were awesome. Kobe Sliders, Ahi Poke Nachos, Buffalo Wings, Garlic Fries, Regular fries, Chicken Nachos. Entrees: Orange Chicken, Seafood Combo (market price), Sushi (Sushi here was AMAZING! Better than Sansei's HANDS DOWN!). Servers were pretty awesome and knowledgeable about their menu and suggested great entrees. The girls in my group loved this place as well. I didn't do the breakfast buffet here, since we ate at Sonz' everyday because we enjoyed the view. Umalu's is one of the many things I miss about Hawaii.... yummmm

  • Latisha P.

Good poolside food. Had the Ahi grilled fish tacos. Glad they gave a salsa with it. The sauce in the tacos was really good too. I also got a fresh coconut from the market. The chef there, Chef Kevin, actually opened the coconuts up for us. He was really nice and it was entertaining and cool to watch him slice it with the knife. The potato stix were good too. I love french fries. You get a lot so definitely share them! My sisters had the veggie caprese sandwich and said it was really good.

  • Marie K.

The atmosphere is nice, I mean what can be better by pool side and the view of the ocean. The drinks and food are over priced. I even ordered a margarita and I could clearly see and taste that they put very little or no alcohol what- so - ever because I compared mine to the lady across from me. We ordered an angus slider and it was just 1 for 4 dollars on the happy hour. I mean it was nothing special that a restaurant should put on their happy hour, I would def have them consider putting a small side. Not something that was presented well.

  • Cindy W.

We only had cocktails here (3 different days) - they were amazing! The lava flow and the mango banana lava flows are scrumptious! Great draft beer selections. Views of the pool and ocean! Many people were eating here as well. Food looked yummy.

One of the best pool bars I ever experienced. They made the best Pina Colodas, Blood Mary's, Mai Tai's...... The list goes on. Great salads, sandwiches and appetizers. Service was also great - some of the nicest servers here. It's open late night, so you can have a few drinks after dinner here as well.

I'm writing about the children's menu options... Chicken Nuggets? Hot Dog? Kraft Macaroni & Cheese at a Resort in Hawaii? Really? Where is the local island fair? Spam Musubi or maki rolls? Healthy veggie options for sides? The only "fresh" option, carrots and celery - you get literally 2 of each (dry and old, no wonder why no one picks that option), Pick the Fries, there is enough to feed a family 2 adults and 2 kids...sad...

Really good poolside fare, with a terrific view. Everything we ordered was good (we ate here probably 5 times over the course of the week: once for breakfast, once for dinner, and a few lunches/snacks when we'd be back at the hotel between activities), plus grabbed drinks if we were at the pool. The bartenders are great, the drinks some of the best I had in Maui, and the service friendly. The bar's a pretty good place for watching a game, too, and the nachos aren't bad if you're looking for a TV-watching snack. Oh, and if you're a breakfast buffet person (I'm not, particularly, though this one had a lot of fruit, which was very nice), the Umalu buffet is about $10 cheaper than the one inside at Sonz. I don't know how they differ, though, as I didn't try the other. My only real complaint is that you can't get in/out of the hotel right by the restaurant, or through it. Also, there should be separate bathrooms from the ones for the pool, or the facilities should be expanded. You can slip off to freshen up and end up waiting in line for 10-15 minutes.

  • Cat H.

After some time by the pool, we decided to hit the bar and get some food. After ordering a round of mai tais, we ordered some grilled fish tacos and the paniolla salad. The salad was so good that I watched my friend literally lick the plate. And the tacos were so good that as the bartender handed me chalula sauce to spice them up (bless you) I devoured them nearly in one bite. Yummmmmmm! I ordered at the bar instead of waiting inside, so things were so much better than what I saw people dealing with inside.

If staying at the Hyatt or taking a stroll on the beach walk this was a great find. We stayed at the Hyatt so- when were ready for a bite to eat on our lazy beach days... we def. didn't go hungry. The have a Share with 2 menu and my husband and I split the nachos (chicken) and also tried their flat bread sandwich. The prices were typical and the service was excellent. My favorite frozen drink was the papaya chi chi - so yummy.... and pretty. Breakfast was also included in our room price - so is the Swan Court was too busy you can also use your breakfast coupons there as well. The same food is served and there is no need to then leave a tip - since it's cafeteria style.

In the realm of hotel/resort food this place is exactly what you can expect. The food is good but it definitely comes with a price.

    (3)
  • Bryan B.

I've eaten lunch here a few times when I was at an event for a few days at the Hyatt. It's pricey, but you're at a resort on Maui and it's got a nice view so what do you expect. The food is pretty good... I really enjoyed the seared ahi salad, got that twice. I've also had a sandwich, but I forget what was between the bread, so it probably wasn't that good. Lots of other things on the menu looked good. Haven't had drinks or dinner here. Torn between 3 and 4 stars. I settled on 3 because of the price/touristy factor.

  • S C.

Had the loco moco and it was REALLY GOOD - definitely recommend if you've been curious about this no holds barred dish. My wife had the mahi tacos and they were delicious as well. So why three stars? The service. Seriously, I've had better service at a Souplantation. Now, if this were a TGIF's or something, I wouldn't complain, but for the location, vibe, and prices, I definitely expect more. Just an example, we were there with our daughter and since she's younger, we placed her order first thing so she could get a head start on the meal (parents of young kids know what i'm talking about). We ordered the petite steak (which was also good - she loved it) but then it took 15-20 minutes or so before the waitress came and took our orders. Not only that, but they didn't bring my daughters dish until 5-10 minutes after we got our food! It just made for a very long night, couldn't get the waitress' attention for water, the check, whatever... quite frustrating. Sadly, this type of service has pretty much been status quo for all our interactions with the staff at the Hyatt resort - from Swan's Court to their concierge. Bottom line - the food is good, just be ready for crappy service and you'll leave fairly content.

  • Brad S.

I had the fish tacos (fried) and the Ahi poke nachos. The fish tacos were excellent, and I would have eaten them again if I had a couple more days here. Its fried mahi-mahi with a spicy remoulade type sauce and lettuce. There is also a spicy verde sauce that I added liberally, as the portions of fish were very large. The Ahi poke nachose were interesting, but taro chips didn't really suit my taste. The wait at the bar for an accompanying drink is the only real downside I could complain about.

Awesome bartenders!! They even comp'd me a few tonics bc we had walked from the beach when we couldn't find an attendant. Awesome kulua pork nachos! They serve up great mai tais; a absolute must when in the islands. I brought my original rating down a couple stars because it is a must to take a food allergy serious. I spent the entire day with swollen cheeks and a tongue when I didn't notice the jalepenos in my nachos and just thought they were spicy! The sunset here is beyond amazing and again, it's a great place for drinks and snacks and/or a light dinner during your stay at The Hyatt.

It's very expensive for what you get, but at least what you get is halfway decent. At all the other places I ate at on Maui, the food was expensive and they served you dog food. One of the better places I ate at in Maui. Try the Paniolo salad, the chicken sandwich or the nachoes with Kalua pork.

I can't speak to the food at all, buy their Mai Tais at happy hour for $5 are pretty decent. The live entertainment is good too. Holy crap the flies are bad! You'd think I was made of poo the times they've landed on me! Probably won't come back because of the flies.

They changed what was a great place for lunch into an overpriced mediocre cafeteria. They give you a number , like Carls Jr. They fired the waitresses I guess to save money.

Unbelievably delicious food, which was so unexpected for a resort hotel. We were expecting overpriced, factory, bland food, but you won't get that here. Stayed at the Hyatt for a week and had at least one meal a day here. I could eat the ahi poke nachos for every meal, every day. The appetizer was served with a generous amount of big chunks of fresh ahi lightly bathed in a delectable sesame soy, tobiko, an edame puree of some sort, and dabs of goat cheese. The ahi alone was heaven, but dip a taro chip with a little blend of everything it's served with, and it's a party in your mouth. They don'tskimp on any of the dishes, all served with big servings of protein. The kalua pork quesadillas were yummy; the steak flatbread was so falvorful, tender with its carmelized onions; the nachos were loaded with more toppings than tortilla chips, sushi was great, salads were large and fresh. Also had breakfast one morning when we wanted a fast meal, the buffet had many of the items offered at Swan Court, and there was hardly anyone there. The bonus is that the wait service when you're lounging at the pool comes from Umalu, so order your lunch poolside. You won't regret it. Great food, great view, great service.

Quite possibly the best meal we had during our week-long visit to Maui. We stayed next door at the Marriott Ocean Club but thought we'd stroll down the path to the Hyatt Regency to see how the other half lives. Boy, we were not disappointed. The Regency is a stunning hotel - and Umalu is a terrific restaurant, WAY better than Longboards, the equivalent casual, beachside eatery at the Marriott. We happened to arrive with our two children during happy hour (4-6) and so while the youngsters ordered the obligatory cheeseburgers from the kid's menu, my wife and I sampled from the items on the bar menu - all of which sounded tasty, and most priced at little more than $6 or $8. The mahi-mahi fish tacos were excellent, and I think I could have eaten six of the pulled pork version (they were that good), but stopped at two. We added a basket of maui onion rings for the table (crispy and not at all greasy) and while the kids split an old-fashioned milkshake for dessert, we grown-ups splurged on "da bomb" - deep-fried pineapple-coconut ice cream, served with whipped cream and fresh berries. Yum. Our waitress Michele was a true professional - friendly, prompt, courteous, and only too eager to please even when we made special requests like splitting a milkshake for the kids or asking to have our photo taken (I know, I know: tourists!) First-class food, great view, fabulous service. What more do you want? The regular dinner menu is a touch more expensive but if the food is anything like what we enjoyed, it's worth it.

We came here for lunch today and just fell in love with this restaurant. We got seated at a table with perfect views of the ocean. For lunch, I ordered the jerk spiced seared ahi salad and the roasted chicken tortilla soup. The soup came first and it was excellent.....filling, spicy and super flavorful. The salad was also outstanding....the ahi tuna was seared to perfection....the dressing was super tasty and mixed trememdously well with the pecans, ahi and greens. Lastly, the service was excellent.........a perfect lunch spot at the Hyatt!

Umalu is located right in the Hyatt Regency Hotel. This is where my wife and I stayed while on our honeymoon, and was the first place we ate at while on Maui. First off do yourself a favor and skip all of the burgers on the menu, there are prepackaged patties and you'll be disappointed. Virtually everything else is to die for. In particular the fish tacos awesome. Very nice ambiance in the outdoor dining area, with tiki torches lit all the around the seating area. There is an outdoor bar as well that is a great place to hang out after a long day of actvities. I recommend the Strawberry Lava Explosion or the Hawaii standard Mai Tai must have drinks here. I also asked for the bartender to make a Strawberry Margarita which is not a speciality drink of theirs but was excellent. Only drawback is prices which can be a bit high, but I think for the quality of the food it is worth it.

Almost $90 for pizza, wings, and two drinks is steeeep. Maybe it helps that the pizza and wings were pretty good (or maybe my brain is trying to trick me so that I don't stroke out)...In all honesty, this restaurant is hit or miss on the food/drinks. We ate at Umalu 3 times during my week-long stay at the Hyatt (mostly due to the convenience). The pizza and wings were good (1st time). The Jamaican jerk sandwich was bland and generic and the chicken quesadilla was something out of this world---I didn't think they could screw up a quesadilla, but I was wrong (2nd time). The breakfast was good (3rd time), and I actually preferred to have my "free breakfast" here rather than at Swan Court. Where Umalu excels is in the service category. The service was a 5/5 every time and I never felt neglected by the bar tender or the waitstaff. Their drinks are a 2/5, mostly because they skimp on the alcohol. If you charge over $14 for a 10-12 oz. drink, and down the street I can get the same thing for half the price, it's not a good practice to egg me to move on. On one occasion, the manager sent my wife and I free drinks because we were honeymooning. I felt this was a good way of adding the "we care about you" touch to our dining experience and it was appreciated. The ocean views from most of the tables and the convenience of having the restaurant next to the pool make this a decent little restaurant. P.S. the Umalu Kitchen provides the offerings of a small convenience store, complete with icee machines and all--again, pretty convenient.

I wish I had a magic time machine that allowed me to visit Umalu's whenever I had a hankering for their amazing Maui Onion Rings! These are THE BEST onion rings you will ever eat in your entire life! We went here a few times just for the onions rings. I also had a fish taco at one point that hit the spot and split some sliders with the hubs that were dang good. Also they have a ice cream sandwich dessert that is way yum and a perfect cap to a nice day n the beach!

Great happy hour from 4-6p with live music by the Hyatt pool/bar most days. For $5 per Mai Tai (rather strong as well) and good atmosphere, this place is hard to beat during this time frame. Waitstaff is friendly and drinks came out from the bar fast. Will say that my husband must have been wearing some sort of fly-attraction cologne or something because they were landing in his personal space a lot. Not in mine. And no, he didn't step in anything either.

Restaurant & bar both excellent. We often stay at the Hyatt, so malu is very convenient. They give you lots of food for your money, and it's good food! The Kuala Pork Quesadilla was great! The Maui onion rings are excellent. I ordered the chicken nuggets and fries and got about a dozen tasty chicken nuggets on a mountain of fries. My wife enjoyed the Grilled Mahi Ceasar Salad with Anchovies (and she doesn't even usually like anchovies). She said they were the freshest ever. She also liked the fish tacos and ahi burger. All the food I've had there is good. The pizza was also very good (and filling). The service is very good, and they have live music every night. The drinks are also good. Try the Landslide! The Banana Martini is very good. As is the Mango special they had for $8. The Mango Dream was ok, but heavier. Highly recommended. Worth a trip to Maui for: Lahaina Lemonade, Maui Onion Rings

This poolside/beachside restaurant is part of the Hyatt Regency resort in Kaanapali. My wife and I were crashing their beach that day, but we neglected to pack a picnic lunch, so we strolled over here for a meal. We had the beer-battered mahi fish tacos, a cobb salad, and the Maui onion rings. The fish was hot and crispy on the outside, and flaky on the inside. They give you two on the plate, plus a garnish, for $20. The cobb salad was served in an edible rice bowl, and was too huge for my wife to finish. The onion rings were very good--crispy and not greasy, with a passion-fruit BBQ dipping sauce. The whole meal here, including two bottomless iced teas, tax, and tip, set us back almost $60, but, at least we really enjoyed it. You know you are not going to get off cheap eating at a hotel restaurant. I would have even been willing to come back for dinner, but didn't have a chance.

Twelve dollars for a cocktail and seven dollars for a beer? At a pool side bar? Seriously? I thought the prices were ridiculous but who can resist the lure of enjoying a frosty beverage poolside while lounging in the sun and looking out over the ocean. By the third day I had figured out that they do have specials. There are like three happy hours a day... at the first from 11am to noon you can get $6 bloody marys and mimosas... then at 3pm it was the same price for pina coladas and frozen daiquiris.. and the regular happy hour from 5 to 6 it was like $2 off anything... or maybe $4 off... something like that. They don't really advertise it so ask your server. The drinks they make are actually pretty good. The do a lot of stuff fresh, without a mix. I also thought that it was cool that they had some of the local beers on tap. We only ate there once and it was decent, but its pretty hard to screw up pizza.

I was very pleasantly surprised with Umalu. We went for an afternoon snack since they were serving lunch until 4 and got the poke nachos which were so good with taro and sweet potato chips and the pulled pork tacos and redeemed our complimentary bottle of champagne that they gave us for our anniversary for staying at the Hyatt. After two glasses a piece, we knew we reached our limit so they had room service deliver the rest of our bottle to our room at a scheduled time which was a nice touch. Would definitely come back.

Two good reasons to come - Kalua pork quesadilla and Korean BBQ bulgogi beef sandwich. Make sure to ask for the Maui Hot Sauce. Dying to go back to try more!

Ah sweet memories. Writing this review makes me wish I was back at the Hyatt Regency in Maui. This was the first meal me and my wife had and we split several different appetizers. My favorite was the kalua pork quesadillas. The pork was very juicy and full of great flavor with melted cheese on top, it was one of favorite things I ate the entire trip. No medley of appetizers in Maui would be complete without onion rings made from Maui Onions. These were cooked to perfection, no onion slipping out when you take a bite. It's not the cheapest place to eat, but with the quality of food and view, it's a great place to get a snack.

It's good a good place for a quick bite to eat if you're staying at the Hyatt, but I probably wouldn't go out of your way to stop here. Also, I wouldn't go here if you want something quick. Both times we stopped in for lunch, there appeared to only be one waitress working the entire area, so it took forever to get anything... including the bill. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to write home about either.

While the Hyatt Regency is absolutely stunning, I can't say that I was as impressed by the poolside restaurant, Umalu. It was convenient, but I would not likely return on my next trip to Maui. After a long day at the beach, my fiancé and I ordered two happy hour mai tais ($5 each from 4:00-5:00) and an order of pork nachos. The drinks were OK -- I enjoyed the slice of pineapple, but Aloha Mixed Plate had tastier and stronger drinks (cheaper too!). The pork nachos were not bad, but they were also not outstanding. A decent amount of pork, but not much flavor. Overall, I would say that the price was not worth the meal. I would recommend that in lieu of one meal at Umalu, get two at Aloha Mixed Plate or Local Food. (better food, cheaper cost).

One of the other great spots in the Hyatt. We used this place for lunch, pretty much every day. The ahi burger was awesome, as was the ahi poke nachos, the BLTA, and the maui onion flatbread. Great salads, etc. too. Right by the pool, has a bar.... Pretty much a great place to have lunch. We didn't try dinner here.

Solid 4 Stars here folks! Walking along the beach, Hottie and I were intrigued by Umalu, as there was a solo musician playing top 40 music Hawaiian style. On day 5 in Hawaii we were missing main land music, so we meandered in and snagged a table right by the musician. The drink menu was pretty robust, but what caught my eye first was the mango mojito. It was soooo good, the mango really pairs nicely with the mint! Next I ordered a pa'ia passion martini; it was also tasty, but not as pleasing as the mango mojito. We started off with the Island style hummus. At first I was taken back by the price tag, but that shock soon wore off after I tasted it! The hummus was served with the best pickled olives/garlic/red pepper mix that I've ever had. (As a self proclaimed olive Connoisseur, this says a lot!). The dinner menu was pretty weak on vegetarian options (Salad or Pizza), but since I wasn't starving I decided to order the Paniolo salad without chicken. This may have been one of the best and filling salads I have ever had. It was the perfect mix of black beans, corn, avocado, and butter lettuce. The cilantro dressing was sweet yet tangy and perfectly refreshing. Too full for dessert, I had to pass on the macadamia nut ice cream sandwich, but if (when) I make it back to Maui, I plan on starting with it!

My husband and I had a solid experience at Umalu, but I have to say it wasn't what I expected. The seating is outdoors (expected), but I was surprised to see paper napkins and plastic drink cups because the menu prices seemed to dictate better service. They had a really great band (unexpected) which really added to our overall experience. Our server (Taylor) was attentive and really friendly. Two thumbs up. We had the carmelized Maui onion flatbread (very good) and the beer-battered Maui waui style fish tacos (to die for, as long as you use the salsa that comes on the side). We're usually beer and wine people, but we did try a couple of cocktails. The mango banana rush was really tasty (though it was practically a dessert) and I enjoyed the Ka'anapali sunburn as well. While I *wouldn't* come back here for a romantic or upscale experience, I would come for a laid-back, tasty meal with fun outdoor entertainment.

This is one of the more casual restaurants at the Hyatt Resort in Maui. The food is actually far better than Cascade's, at 1/2 the price. Of course, this is because Cascade's is disgusting. Try the various salad dishes, or the interesting pork quesadilla. The meals come with a 3-sauce condiment set, all of which are very tasty. The service is also good, and the tables are set between the hotel and the ocean, which is not a bad spot! Nice view and comfortable setting.

We were staying at the Hyatt so we ate here several times by the pool. Grilled fish tacos were good but nachos were overloaded and soggy, chicken panini was NOT a panini! I've had plenty of great panini's in my life and this was dry chicken in a bland piece of bread that was not grilled. Couldn't eat half of it. Ahi tuna salad was so so. Last thing is drinks were in plastic cups - I get that this is poolside but we were sitting at the tables and for that much money I'd expect glassware!

We stay at the Hyatt most of the time when we are in Maui. It seems as if we wind up at Umalu after walking down the beach path and finding the usual food. Umalu has the usual food but it is the quality of the food and the wonderful service and outrageous drinks that keep us eating there. The onion rings are beyond good. The ahi burger was devine! The fish tacos were over the top. The only bad thing I can say about this is that it is pricey; but what isn't on Maui? We bought a time share at the Westin Villas and will probably never stay at the Hyatt again, but we will always go back for Umalu! If you are there, give it a try!

Food was eh. I know its hotel food but i figured since it was the hyatt i might b impressed...wrong! I had the veggie wrap which was cold and obvioisly had been prepared prbly the day before and sat in the fridge forever. My bf had the fish tacos which is one of the dishes the place is known for. He said they were good. Do yourself a favor and get outta touristville for dinner. Learned my lesson :/

For a hotel pool restaurant, a very high quality lunch! One star off for price. Basically, a burger will cost you $20. I had the ahi burger which was well made with bean sprouts and served with taro chips. The server was accommodating and split the chicken quesadilla for our twins, which they liked. You pay for convenience on hotel property.

This is the casual poolside restaurant at the Hyatt. Food was good but grossly overpriced, as with much at the resort hotels and on Hawaii in general. The happy hour is at 4pm where several of the items become $4, but beware, the normally priced $12 sliders don't become $4, it's actually only one slider for that price. Cocktails were tasty but not very strong.

Cafeteria food at ridiculous prices. Unless you get seats at the bar, you have to order in the cafeteria (with table service, but no actual server). However, the location is beautiful and convenient.

I didn't care for my meal (upcountry steak wrap of some sort), but my friend had some sort of upcountry steak salad which looked delicious and she finished it. The quesadilla looked like it would be delicious. There were a couple other things I wouldn't mind trying. I might have just ordered the wrong thing, so I'd give this place another shot. Great for guests staying in the resort area since it is located at the Hyatt on Kaanapali beach.

We ate at this place too many times because it was situated within our hotel. This place is very pricey and the food is nothing spectacular. My husband really enjoyed the prime rib and eggplant dish that he ordered. I ordered the seafood dish (the priciest item on the menu). The only thing that was really good from my dish was the tiger prawns but everything else was mediocre. I am sure there are definitely better places to eat so if you have a chance to do so in Maui, I would.

We had many meals here and it was always up to excellent standards. I got the Maui style fish tacos a grip of times and I would not hesitate to say they are the Best! My wife got a veggie burger which you can substitute into any burger they serve. It was what you would expect from a veggie burger. A cherry on top was the garlic fries. Ital! Look forward to eating here again and again and again. Great Service!

I love that it is perfectly acceptable to sit down at a pricey restaurant in a bikini or a barely there coverup. But anyway, out waiter was awesome. He was constantly filling up our cups with water even after we decided to just lounge around and had already paid. The food was delicious (though of course overpriced). We asked for 4 extra slices of bacon and wasn't charged extra. Overall, great service. Food was pretty good though nothing to rave about.

Unfortunately, Umalu has closed their dining area for dinner as of September 17. Now only the bar area with a few high top tables is available. And that area was so understaffed we waited 30 minutes after getting drinks for the server to return to take our dinner order.

We went for the 30% OFF sushi that runs between 5 and 7 PM - no coupon required, just mention it. The sushi was pretty good, actually, but most menu items were pretty pricey and wouldn't have been discounted so we just stuck with the sushi and received the 30% off on our check. Recommended!

Came here for dinner w/ 4 adults and 4 kids. Start out we had bad service. There were only 2 waitresses. They only open 4 tables w/ regular chairs. The rest are tables w/ bar chairs. So we had to wait because the 1st waitress told us the table with high bar chair is not for kid. We were ok with that answer but then few minutes later we saw a white couple w/ a kid were being seated at the high chair table. I want to leave but my friend wanted to try cuz of good review on the food and a table was open up. The 1st waitress was a white woman. I'm Asian. So I felt discriminated by this white waitress. Anyway, that waitress ends up not waited on our table. the table was for 4 so we had to wait for another table. So when a table became available, no waitress was around to clean and set up the table for us. Another customer in line almost took that table but we had to tell them we're waiting for that table and the waitress to come back to clean it. Get ready to fight for a table if u want o eat here. Food was ok but not worth waiting and fighting for a table and being discriminated.

Another ridiculous spot to watch a Maui sunset! Happy hour is 4-6 daily and includes bar grub and the most delicious $5 mai tai yet. Our $4 Maui onion rings were the perfect ratio of meaty onion to crispy batter. The $6 nachos were piled high with all sorts of goodies. Good selection of local beers on tap, sadly these aren't a part of the happy hour but for a Hyatt $6 a pint is practically a steal. Great live music and given the shorter December days, our happy hour excursion concluded with a torch lighting ceremony.

If you are on Hyatt property and don't want to go off, this place will do. The food is average and overpriced for what you get. Beautiful bar and setting with friendly service!

Expensive and not tasty. My chicken katsu was $19 and cold. I can get better, fresher food for $8-9. Avoid.

Hawaiian pizza is perfection! Get the "Diamond Margarita" - it's $18 but you only need 2 or 3 of those strong drinks! "Skinny" drinks are excellently made with coconut water!"

My mother and I have been here before about two years ago and the last time we were here was great. However, this time was not the greatest. The bartenders were not very attentive, nor friendly. Drinks were moderate and the food was good. Overall the experience wasn't the best.

I guess you have to expect that on the beach on vacation.

some of the best food on the resort enjoy solo or with cohorts plenty of people by the pool or bar catch the game where you sit, no matter how far the service is great whether its lunch or breakfast buffet korean bulgogo sandwhich and the maui onion flatbread enjoyed with some taro chips, happily my stomach was fed there is not a lot that is offered on the menu list however the tasty in-house drinks will make up for their lack of endeavor great choice to eat here when too lazy to leave the hotel the birds will hover at your table no matter how loud you yell and thus ends my sad attempt at poetry to help break some of my yelp review monotony

No booze. LAME!

So Umalu... where to start... there food ranges from awesome to ehhh... so, I have to go w/a-ok...

  • Luca R.

The food is edible but far from being good. The service is nice, the setting is kind of too busy for me. We has a cesar salad that had way too much mayo. The fish tacos were better. The pina colada wasn't good. Being at the hawaii i would expect a better quality drink of that kind.

Umalu's is one of the many things I miss about Hawaii.... yummmm

Had a NY steak here one night and a steak sandwich another night. Both were just OK. Go to Japengo or the other restaurant at the Hyatt instead as they are much better.

Sushi was hightlight of this place. Ate here 2x for dinner, and once for lunch..overall not too impressed. I ordered the mahi for dinner, it was overcooked and dry. Kids meals are not good.

Place is awesome with an awesome view. If you like sushi and are down for some Hawaiian style get the poke nachos. They aren't what you think and have a great blend and the slides are ridic. and best staff in MAUI!!!!

Food was pretty good though nothing to rave about.

this place is great. we stayed at the hyatt for one night and decided to eat here. service was great as well as the location. food was right on, she had the ahi nachos with taro root chips, i had onion rings, both were great. we had a bottle of champagne that was given to us by the hotel for her birthday, thank you. amazing place to relax and have good food and drinks
