The nigiri and rolls were excellent , my hats off to the Sushi chef. but, I love Pho and ordered their seafood Pho. It came with whole shrimp, half a lobster tail and a couple of wonderful scallops. All that was great, the problem was the bases of a Pho, the broth. It lacked both depth and flavor. What a disappoint! I was expecting that rich, simmered for six our base that I'm use to. Just last night we ate at the Saigon Cafe on the other side of the island and the Pho broth was exceptional and a third the price. I left Japangos with the feeling, that they just threw together the broth. If there was an issue with their 'regular' broth, just don't offer the dish.

The food was the best we had in Hawaii and everything we ate in Hawaii was outstanding! Not only was the food perfect, but the service made it even better. Our server was Sheri. Lots of energy, very helpful, and lots of fun. We would for sure go back and she has to be our server. A++++ on everything. We had duck potstickers, quail egg sushi starters, tengu roll (eel), salmon, tuna and scallop. Never had scallop sushi before, but this melted in your mouth. They also served me a happy birthday dessert. Very good and I don't usually eat dessert. The meal was on the pricey side, but it was worth it. Oh, the quail eggs are only $1 each. Order 10!

One of my favorite restaurants during my stay. A must try if you are in the area.

Great sushi, service, and ambiance. Would definitely go again. A little on the pricey side but worth it IMO.

Beautiful restaurant with really delicious food! Our server was really great and made sure we had a really nice time, and celebrated my husbands birthday with what he loves most...food! :) My husband was very happy I found this place and was raving about the dinner for the rest of the time we were on Maui. If you're on the island and you want a really great dinner, don't worry about it being a part of a resort, it doesnt have a resort-y feel, and the food is just spectacular!

Really good food. Great view but it was raining when we went. The braised short rib was excellent and the yellowtail watermelon. Great ambiance and service.

We've eaten here on 3 occasions. We can't say enough about the quality of the food and enjoyable professional staff. Hamachi Kama was exception. We will probably work through most of their menu.

Most amazing sunset view and happy hour to go along with it! This place is a but ridiculously overpriced in my humble opinion but the happy hour makes it kind of reasonable. We always snag a seat outdoors which is perfect for the kiddo!

Japengo was a fun experience during our Maui trip. We ended up sitting at the sushi bar, which probably added to our experience. Our sushi chef was great! He recommended different rolls for us to try and even made a custom made to our liking. Overall, it was a fun experience but the sushi wasn't anything very different than what we've had before. We thought for being such a nice place, the food would be extraordinary, but it was just okay. It was nice but nothing too special.

  • Brianna C.

Service was great, food was great. We had the hamachi Kama, perfectly cooked, the tootsie roll, which was amazing and good for kids or people who don't like raw fish- the mushroom they put on top is hardly noticeable. We also got salmon sashimi which tasted very fresh and was very tender, and for a side we had broccoli and tofu. The broccoli and tofu had too much sauce but it was thin enough to get off. Beautiful setting as well, we got a great table overlooking the ocean, and the torches make for great ambience.

Delicious food. Incredible ocean views. Friendly and accommodating staff. I can't say enough about fantastic this restaurant is. Appetizer - Black cod poached in butter and served with lobster cream and sweet and sour asian fusion sauce. Without a doubt the tastiest fish I have ever eaten in my life. Main course - Pork chop with plum wine sauce, dusted with peanuts and served with a sweet potato/bacon/peppers/onion hash. Out. Of. This. World. Dessert - Chocolate Molten Lava Cake. Cooked perfectly and delicious. Expect to pay a high price for the food but it is worth every last cent. A perfect culinary experience from start to finish. Highly recommended.

I ate here with my husband during our stay at the Hyatt Regency. We had heard good things about this place so we decided to try it out! Unfortunately, we were quickly disappointed. Once we were seated and got a good look at the menu, we were surprised at how mediocre it was and also by the fact that it was very expensive! We are from California where great, inexpensive sushi is easy to find so this was quite a shock to us! We debated on leaving...but we ended up staying and ordering rainbow rolls and fried rice. It took over 30 minutes for the food to come out and when it did it was unfortunately average at best. Also the soy sauce the waitress brought out had 2 dead bugs in it. GROSS! We won't be back.

Great view of the sunset!) beautiful ambiance! Highly recommend watermelon cocktail so refreshing! Sushi rolls were good, sashimi was so fresh and great choices: we had tuna, salmon, snapper, mahi mahi, 12 pieces for $30.00! Dessert: flaming pineapple creme cake! Absolutely amazing!

  • Paul S.

You know how people have their 'happy place'? I've finally found mine! Food and drinks were decent, had the special man chong that comes with the shrimp dynamite, an awesome deal for $40. The grilled mahi mahi was a little dry, but nothing a little alcohol can't fix. We ordered a dessert and an appetizer, but the food isn't the important part. The view is absolutely amazing, we had a 6pm reservation, make sure you ask them to seat you at one of the tables OUTSIDE so you can enjoy the sunset and the sea breeze and sounds of waves hitting the beach. One couple waited 30 minutes extra to get seated outside as opposed to inside, very smart choice Food is good to great, drinks and service are good, view is amazing, can't wait to be back!

Was looking forward to this after a long flight after arriving at the Hyatt but was underwhelmed. Ahi poke was good. Hamachi sashimi was buttery. Salmon sashimi wasn't that fresh. Rolls were just average without a big selection. Fried rice tasty. I've had better black cod. Maybe I'm a sushi snob or we get better fish flown into the New York area, but this just wasn't what I expected for a Hawaiian sushi restaurant. Beautiful views and good service.

  • Lily L.

The service is superb and decor of the restaurant is breathtaking, but I don't expect any less considering you're in Hawaii. However, when it comes to the sushi, I was not blown away. I've heard so many great things about sushi in Hawaii and because of that I probably had higher expectations, therefore, I was not blown away from the food. But, nonetheless the freshness is ... W-O-W. And, regarding the drinks, I can't remember what the boyfriend and I had, but they were both amazing.

    (3)
  • Andrew Y.

surprisingly good. don't expect any uber exotic pieces, but what they serve is in fact fresh and generously portioned for a hotel restaurant. if memory serves me right, expect hamachi, snapper, salmon, tuna, and tako. services was solid, and nice ambiance. worth a shot if you're staying at the hyatt and craving sashimi.

  • Angie T.

Japengo rocks! My boyfriend and I live in Kihei on Maui, and we enjoy occasional staycations at the Hyatt in Ka'anapali. When we stay there, Japengo tops our list of restaurants. The service is phenomenal, and the sushi and sashimi are amazing. The food is always prepared beautifully and with such style and care. We have never been disappointed and will return time and again.

Beautiful views and great service. We had the end table with an amazing view of the sunset - it was breath taking. The food, not so much. Over salted and maybe not so fresh - we did go off season, but expected much better quality, especially for the prices. The rolls - as reviewed - are huge and good. Very filling. We sent back both of our entree dishes, the salmon and the ahi - both were dry, over cooked and mealy texture (result of being frozen? not sure, but gross.) The server was more than willing to take back and never gave us a problem about it. We also had the duck meatball starter - good, nothing special, heavily sauced and couldn't tell what kind of meat it was. We also ordered the curry calamari - the flavors were good, but the batter was heavy on flour that wasn't entirely cooked out, but still good. We ate it all. I would go back if i was getting a great table with a view of the sunset - in fact we did - we just ordered the rolls and skipped everything else and enjoyed the amazing view. The bar area looked pretty cool and nice, while also having two tv's showing ball games - and the lounge in the front of the property seemed like a great spot to enjoy the evening and have an after dinner cocktail while listening to some local music.

If you are staying at the Hyatt or on the west side of Maui this place is a MUST!!! The food , service and atmosphere are amazing. I am big sushi lover and this place has some great sushi. We had the Kani(fresh crab) spicy tuna roll, shrimp tempura roll and all were very delicious and beautifully presented. We also ordered a half portion of the fried rice(it was more than enough for two people especially when ordering a few rolls) they were very accommodating when we asked to modify the fried rice due to a dietary restriction. The server was excellent I believe his name was Jun. This place was a great start to out trip will def go back before we leave.

  • David W.

WE thoroughly enjoyed our food, dessert, the ambience, the view and listening to the ocean waves crashing. Great last night out! Would be great if you can get a reservation so you can enjoy the sunset, we were a bit late. Server was very nice, a bit clumsy with the wine bottle but extremely nice and attentive. note: their corking fee is a bit ridiculous @ $40, so better make it a good bottle!

  • Denise G.

I don't get all the hype. Yes the rolls were gigantic thanks to the pound of rice they use. For $22+ $3 for soy paper I expected more. Yes I'm a sushi snob,my BFF is a Chef at a private club, so I know what a good roll should look like and a over priced roll of rice looks like. Don't listen to the hotel staff raving how good it is . And "best on the island"? Well, that's just sad and disappointing if it's true. The do have Delish saki if you just want drinks. Aloha.

Excellent service, great ambiance, fine setting, and a discount for locals! I am ALL for it! Our server was awesome. She didn't miss a beat. . . just wish I could remember her name. The sushi was great and the big bowl of edamame is another star on the board! Would love to go back again someday.

Restaurant entrance from the boardwalk is hard to find. Make sure you enter after the pools at the Hyatt, which btw looked amazing! The service was good though food took a long time to arrive. The appetizer ( ahi tartar) arrived with the main courses which kinda took away from it being an appetizer. We got three rolls, crunch, Hawaiian, and tootsie. The tootsie and crunch were awfully similar. If the server had let us know hat would've been helpful. The rolls were ok. They were pricey, but what isn't on Maui. The location was close to where we stayed, the food was okay, and the service was good. Truly the 3 star review.

Delicious sushi rolls and great location with ocean views. We ordered the blackened ahi and honolulu rolls for the main course and loved them. We also had the half portion of the fried rice which was also delicious. Great food and atmosphere! Definitely a must while in Maui.

Sushi was gross. Crab in the California Roll was salty and not fresh. All the sushi we ordered was not good. Expensive. Based on reviews I expected it to be at least decent. It was not. I would not eat here again for free. The attentive did refund part of our bill and sent free dessert to our room which was very nice of them. Staff and service was good.

Sashimi was really exceptional. Ahi, salmon, hamachi, kampachi and octopus. The salmon and ahi were the best I've tasted. I had a crispy soft shell crab roll that I thought was a bit mediocre. I remember having better soft shell crab in Austin, Texas of all places. Very pleasant restaurant and service. Good selection of non sushi food. My wife is not a sushi fan and we both enjoyed the meal.

Very nice location - overlooking the beach and you can feel the breeze. We had some decent dishes and some failed ones. Service was impeccable- team of runners, waitress and bussed made sure we were well taken care of throughout dinner. We started with : duck meatballs- very good, clean presentation and savory with a hint of sweetness. Curry calamari- blend, chewy and not cooked very well. It was sliced thin and fried in some batter- it was not crisp nor was it well thought out- Manila Clams- Clams came slightly small, but plenty - it was okay nothing to write home about. Veggie Roll - again nothing to exciting, it was fairly plain- but then again it was a veggie roll. Char Sui Ribs- poorly executed- it came brown soaking in some kind of 5 spice BBQ sauce- not the classic lacquered red glaze traditionally with Char Sui. The 5 spice overpowered the whole dish. Entrees- nothing impressive we ordered 2 dishes family style for 4 people- ended up taking 1/2 of each dish home.. That's how great it was... Seafood Chow Fun & Fried Rice... Okay Dessert we (4 top) shared some sort of ice cream cake... And it didn't get finished. Overall- the location and service was stellar, but the food never lived up to the space.

Really like the ambiance and Asian flare in the air. For the overall raking I would recommend this restaurant for all events, dinner for two, or special occasions with friends or family. Most of the dishes we had were very tasty and satisfying. However, the pho was not worth the money. It did come with lots of seafood, but it was not tasty. We love sushi and their sushi is fresh and very creative. Worth the price for the quality and quantity. Located in the resort area which is nice but can be pricey.

Amazing place! The Octopus Pancake was very wonderful and full of seafood. The Shrimp Roll was ugly but it tasted great. Similar to Roy's but not as good. Similar though. Great service and awesome view - day or night!

You pay for the view (which was amazing). Food wise... Overpriced and decently tasting. My group got a bunch of rolls and some appetizers as well as the flaming pineapple upside down cake. The cake was the outstanding. The sushi rolls, were good. Nothing spectacular given the price point. Would I come back? Nope.

Extremely nice and accommodating waitress. Started with the curry dusted Calimari and hamachi sashimi, both delicious. Then the Chinese chow fun which had pork, scallops, shrimp, and crab which was also delicious. Finished it off with the pineapple upside down cake with coconut crembrule on top. Definitely reccomend it. Also overlooked the ocean, beautiful view.

The only reason we tried this location was because it was in the Hyatt (which was where we were staying), we got decent input as to their sushi, and it was a busy night in the area and we needed to get in somewhere quick. Having picked the location that way, it lived up to my expections (low). While we got seated pretty quickly given we didn't have a reservation, the service was beyond slow. I'm sorry, but when you get into a restaurant at 7pm with kids (one small), it is in the servers best interest to make sure that the food is moving and keeping the kids occupied. We got edamame to start and even that took forever to arrive. It was warm, but that was about it. No seasoning and mushy. The kids both had items off the kids menu (orange chicken and a vegetable noodle bowl). The chicken was awful and the noodle bowl was just ok. We had two sushi rolls (the Honolulu and the ??). Those were both pretty good and the highlight of the meal. We also ordered to half sized entrees of Pad Thai and a Chow Fun. The Chow Fun was ok but the pad thai was the oddest flavor i've ever had. I'm a thai fan and this was unlike any thai I've had. Plus they served both dishes with big shrimp with the heads on it. I know that is a personal thing, but it grossed me out (especially when my husband removed one of the heads for me and yellow stuff oozed from the head). I couldn't eat them after that. To make up for the awful service, which the server admitted to, she brought out a free smores dessert and discounted our bill. It was a nice, appreciated touch, but didn't fix the bad dinner experience.

Went there after reading reviews. as usual many people are on vacation and in love with new setting. food was good(only good), views were nice(if you were near windows), drinks were strong, server was knowledgeable and courteous (but slow and a bit distracted at times), price was high end. menu was not so much local infused ingredients (as described). overall, I would absolutely not go back. nothing was worth a second try, or a cherished memory.

Had the best meal! Fresh sushi, great rolls. Been coming to Maui for over 40 years. View is superb! Service is top notch! Best kioke coffee we've ever had! Recommending the nicest waitress, Julie. Great service, great view, great food! 5 stars!

Would have loved to try the place. After staying at the Hyatt for seven days, we were excited. The setting and surroundings are absolutely beautiful. But we didn't realize is that you would have to wait 30 minutes to sit in the bar area where there are open tables. On a Friday night they don't have staff to serve their entire restaurant! Oh well, headed to the Westin, guess we missed out on a $23 sushi roll!

    (2)
  • Blair H.

Service was horrible both times I went. Waited forever for just a glass of water. They are very unorganized. The price of the food does not match the quality. $8 miso should have been $3. $16 for a BASIC California roll. Nothing extraordinary about it. For a pricey place, you would think they would have something other than basic paper, white napkins. Will not be returning.

This place is amazing. First off, the Hyatt is beautiful. The pools are amazing. There is a great ocean view from the restaurant and super romantic. We started with the ahi poke tar tar which was made with locally caught ahi and super creamy. We had a half order of the curry calamari and duck meatballs. My kids are almost all the meatballs. The curry paired really well with the calamari. Came with a delicious cold noodle and sea weed salad mix. The kids stir fry noodle was a huge portion. A bit oily but very delicious. The tootsie roll was yummy with the shiitake mushroom. The best were the sushi. We ordered the kanpachi, which is usually pretty hard to get, the scallop which was super creamy and melts in your mouth, the ahi which was the best ahi tuna I've ever had, and the flounder, who knew Ariel's friend could taste so good. Another amazing dish we had was the side dish of different cabbages stir fried with truffle oil and black beans. For $8 the portion was huge and you could really taste the truffle oil. Yummy! Now I am going home to stir fry all my veggies with truffle oil! By far the best place we have eaten yet in Maui.

Definitely go for happy hour which starts at 5pm. Open seating and great tables over looking pool and ocean. Full dinner menu is available. Live music was actually nice, not too loud, and good mix of songs. Food was great, however it is pricy which is why only 4 stars. Expect to pay $20-$25 per roll and $12 per cocktail. We had the curry calamari which was delicious and part of happy hour ($9). We also ordered the salmon and tuna sashimi which was really good and really fresh but small portion. Six small pieces of each. Tootsie roll (soft shell crab) was also great. Make sure you have a reservation if you want to eat in the main dining room!

I'll make this quick so you can stop reading reviews and start enjoying the beauty that is Maui! If you want excellent sushi with great ambiance, eat here. Live music, the beach is right behind you, and the food is excellent. Ummm uni sushi, sea urchin, you have to try it. It's creamy, and full of flavor. It's an indescribable taste and texture in your mouth. The hamachi, yellow tail, is just like eating butter. The "tootsie" roll is crunchy, sweet, and the flavor for the mushrooms give it extra depth of flavor. Now go! Get off your phone and go!

Fantastic Sushi spot. Great prices on the rolls and the quality/freshness/taste was outstanding. Would highly recommend to anyone staying on Kaanapali Beach. We asked for the Spicy Tuna roll with sprinkled Macadamia nuts on top. Crazy delicious!

Came here after the pre-wedding activities for more substantial grub and drinks. Trying to get service was a bit difficult especially getting our big group together but we managed. We ordered calamari for appetizers and a couple rolls but I forgot the names and all were pretty good and fresh but a little pricey. What else would you expect from a restaurant in a hotel? At least they had live entertainment that night...the guy with an ukelele was dishing out some lovely tunes. If you're staying at this hotel and don't want to drive out for food, guess this would be an ok option.

Hands down one of the best sushi places I've ever been too, we ordered the big roll, Honolulu roll, SWAT Roll, crunchy roll, blackened ahi roll! Great service and super nice staff! Defiantly coming back and would recommend it !

We didn't make it past the bar.We had a reservation 8 pm showed up a few minutes early looking forward to a great meal, sat in the bar area for 15 minutes. Saw zombi waiters walking all around us asked a wait person if we had a waiter that could help us,no answer .Sat for another 10 min no help . Complained to the person at the podium ,She acted like we were way out of line. It was Halloween but zombie wait staff ,not good!

I went here with a group of 6, and we had a lot of fun and ate a lot of food. We ate the following: Dragon roll- amazing we ordered 2 more Blackened ahi roll- very good Spicy tuna- ok Ahi poke- ok Duck meatballs- really good Duck won tons- really good Moriawase- ok Char soy glazed pork ribs- awesome, I could not stop licking my fingers Korean seafood pancake- yummy!!! We ordered a second round Donuts- awesome. They weren't called donuts but looked like donut holes and came with 3 dipping sauces caramel chocolate and something fruity, it was all very good but by this time we were so full we couldn't order more:)

The ambiance of this restaurant could not be more beautiful for outside seating. I honestly could not think of any way it could have been more beautiful. The service was pretty on top of their game as well. It seemed as though they were trying not to disturb us, which resulted in empty drinks for quite a while. The food was a huge disappointment. I was so excited to go to a new place for sushi on the island - and the only way I can describe it was, well, bland. I am a huge sushi fan, so I have tried a ton of it. I would definitely rate this as average. We had the big roll and the super crunch. Very disappointing. We did also have the kapalani pie and it was AMAZING as well as the corn on the cob with lavender butter. I would say this restaurant is definitely worth the view though - will most likely have to return for drinks and to try some of the entrees on the menu.

This is fairly typical for resorts in Hawaii: mood setting with tiki torches and a local guy on guitar singing a variety of styles of music, but heavy on Hawaiian (of course!). A nice little place located in the Hyatt. Dave was our server, and he was excellent. The food was fairly decent, but the overall menu definitely lacked variety. The curry calamari was yummy, and I'd go back for that. Happy hour prices made the drinks and pupus more tolerable, but I don't think they were memorable enough to pay full price.

Great food, had the Honolulu & Dragon Rolls, recommended. Also had the short ribs substituted with jasmine rice instead of kim-chi potatoes. Was surprised to get a complementary birthday cake.

It's all about the blackened ahi roll!! The rest of our dinner was very good, but weeks after our stay on Maui, I am still craving the blackened ahi roll. My fiance and I had a wonderful dinner here and have been recommending Japengo to all of our friends planning to visit Maui. It has a wonderful view from the bar, charming ambiance, great service, and most importantly, excellent food.

This place reinforces the poor quality with regards to service and food found in hotel restaurants in resort destinations. These places penalize guests for being lazy and not taking the time to find better fare. The view is vey nice, unfortunately the only available seats according to the hostess were inside by the sushi bar, thereby taking away anything magical about the restaurant, no sound of the ocean, no island breeze. So without being brainwashed with ambiance we are left with an overly enthusiastic waiter, this guy knew nothing about the overpriced food he was serving, didn't check to see if food was ok, didn't refill drinks on his own, forgot parts of the order, and spaced about 30 min between clearing apps and serving man course. Either he was new to the profession or just spacy. Food matched the service, grilled ahi roll, essentially no evidence of grilling on the tuna, making it just an ahi roll. Wasabi tobiko placed in a manner to encourage it to completely fall off the roll so it could be eaten as a garnish, and roll was not tight. $22 was just too much for imprecise sushi. The mahi overcooked with a coconut sauce that was under seasoned and needing acid. Forbidden rice was a hockey puck, one solid piece of mashed together starch. As for the ribeye the steak was properly cooked, miso sauce slightly too salty, and the mushrooms must've soaked in the sauce because they overpowered the steak to the point where they were all you could taste and it wasn't good. The side was some sort of mashed potato and corn puck with tiny specs of shellfish cooked to a jerky. (Chef must be a hockey fan) and the slice of squash that was undercooked seemed like an afterthought or a waste of food. Worst part was the overly sweet dessert kaanapali pie, which reminded me of something you would get at a Denny's with a cook that was getting fancy with his chocolate sauce bottle. Both dessert and sushi roll was the waiters recommendation. This meal wouldn't be so bad if they charged half the price, or maybe if we were sitting outside with the ocean waves crashing and the salty breeze blowing by. But in reality it was full price sitting indoors on an uncomfortable bench seat that was paired with a table that would've been comfortable for someone 6' or taller. Like I said worst meal in years.

We stayed at the Hyatt and had come here one evening while waiting for friends for a couple of drinks. They have great happy house specials (6.00 for a speciality drink, I had the Hawaiian Sangria). After hearing our friends were running a couple minutes late we ordered an app. We had the Certified Angus New York Grill, with Plum wine ginger demi-glace, kim chi & edamame potato. we had it sliced thin so it was more of an app style dish. It was amazing, super tender and cooked perfectly. Right then and there we knew we had to come here for dinner. We made reservations for the following evening. The next night, we arrived and were seated at a beautiful table with a view of the ocean. The group I was with are all HUGE foodies, so were ordered a little bit of everything. Korean Pancake ( I Thought it was good, but this is my first experience with any kind of a korean pancake) The Crispy Ahi Poke - Poke is supposed to be full of flavor and amazing! The fact that they flash fried this just took every part of this away. It was just blah! The Hoisin glazed pork ribs were so tough.... you couldn't even eat them. Singaporean Chili Crab which is an entree we all shared. it was AMAZING! Maybe the best thing all evening. It was crusted in this amazing chili sauce. it came with steamed bao buns. Sushi was eh.... We ordered too many sweet sushi rolls. Our fault. We had a Spicy Tuna Roll, Blacked Ahi, and the Tootsie Roll. The blacked ahi was the best out of the 3. The maui onion really set it apart. We were so full we couldn't even consider the idea of dessert. Next time! Service was decent. Not out of this world amazing but good.

Had the sashimi platter and some rolls. The sashimi was really good, but on the expensive side. The rolls had good flavor but had so much rice! 1/2 the roll was rice. I expected so much more from this high scale restaurant. I would not return, even if it was free. On a high note the Kanapali Pie was amazing!

Hubby and I live in Maui but played tourist and enjoyed a stay cation at the Hyatt. Hadn't previously had the pleasure of dining at Japengo's. Unfortunately we didn't have reservation but were able to get the full menu in the lounge. Beautiful view, good food, but the best part of the entire experience was the Service we received from Dave. Excellent menu knowledge, with the ability to make everything sound amazing. Enjoyed him so much we came back again the next night for Happy Hour!!!

I think Hawaii has the best and freshest options for fish. Their prep of ahi was sloppy and weak at best. The sushi rolls were not very tasty and I would not recommend if you really like sushi. Service was great as was the view. Food was absolutely not worth the price.

Good food, AMAZING VIEW. Is it a little pricey? Yes, but it is well worth the expense even for one night to see the sunset. Make sure you call in a request to sit on the patio overlooking the pool so you can take amazing pictures as you eat.

Beautiful view especially during sunset. The service was great and very helpful. The food was just ok nothing to rave about and pricy! Then again the restaurant is located at the Hyatt.

Expectations were high. Newer restaurant, great view, wonderful weather. However, reality hit. Place was half empty (never a good thing) - yet 2.5 hour wait for a table. Ordered a Grey Goose martini for the wait and was served a gin martini. Ordered an appetizer (pupu platter) but received clams at our table. When we tried to rectify the issue, plate was removed from our table and served to another table (bad cricket). We decided to move on and tried to pay with a gift card and was promptly told that the transaction probably wouldn't work as their machine was acting up. We think she was angling for cash to put in her pocket. Disappointed because we really wanted to find a nice home base in Lahaina.

OK food, high prices. Ordered some sushi and a cooked fish dish. Atmosphere was good.

Great food, service and view. We ate here our last night in Maui and it was by far the best meal we had in 10days. (We had eaten at Spago, and Morimoto's) I only wish I had eaten there sooner because I would have returned multiple times. We started with the Curry Dusted Calamari and the Clams which were delish.... We order the 1/2 order and I did not want to share the Calamari. It was the best combination and the lime vinaigrette made the dish. For dinner we shared the Vietnamese Pork and it was perfection. The prices are very responsible and I will be going to the San Diego location every time I have a chance.

Great service from (Sherry I think her name was!) We had a very large party of 17! Delicious food, I had the ahi tuna with garlic rice and enoki mushrooms, and started with some hamachi (super super fresh) and some tobiko with quail egg. YUM. The ahi dish was superb, fantastic flavor, I would go there again just for that dish. Extremely romantic setting right on the ocean, firelit torches, live Hawaiian music, delicious cocktails. One review said service was slow, I don't agree, it wasn't the service, perhaps the kitchen... to that I say... you are in Hawaii, what's the rush?

Great place to dress up and go out, sushi was good waiters we're awesome, 1 reason I left 4 stars is cuz there soda tasted like water

Amazing sashimi plate. You can get the Combo $30 (13 pieces) or $60 (25 pieces). We had the calamari too and it was really good. Everything was fresh. The service was also excellent and then the best part outside of the food is the view. It's gorgeous!! Best to make a reservation to secure a good view.

I came here for dinner after a funeral. OK. Sorry. I started writing this review a while ago and I don't know where I was going with that but it's not true. I was in Maui for my 30th birthday, maybe it had something to do with that. The death of my 20's. That seems too poetic for me. Anyway, I came here twice, actually. Both times, I was very pleased. One time my poor lady friend entered the restaurant feeling sick (aka it was not their fault) and had to leave before I did. Which means I dined alone. In Maui. That probably seemed pretty sad to anyone who was watching me. The first time I came I believe it was a Tuesday. The house musician was tight. We walked in and he was playing an older Daft Punk song that immediately caught me. Loved it. Sushi was very good, overall, in case you care about the food at a restaurant. It was a while ago so unfortunately I can't remember anymore. This one is gonna get a bunch of useful comments, I can tell.

If you're looking for a romantic, seaside atmosphere and you're willing to try innovative dishes, this is the place to go. Japengo offers an incredibly menu none like any other Japanese restaurant that I have been to. The rolls are phenomenal, with a generous portion of fresh seafood in each one. Although expensive, you get what you pay for and you will be full! The appetizers, fish with watermelon for example, are unique and refreshing. Ill come again!

Where do I start? Went there with friends for a later dinner (8pm). We shared all the dishes. The upcountry broccoli and tofu with red curry was amazing. Even the carnivorous tofu hater at the table couldn't stop talking about it for days! The fried rice was killer too. Totally up to par even for the hardcore local pallet. Yellowtail sashimi was super fresh and nummy. This is one of those places where everything on the menu sounds so amaze, you know you'll be back to try the items you just can't stop dreaming about! This is my new favorite west Maui spot!

WOW! Best & freshest sushi I've ever had. Sit at the bar.. Warm, friendly hospitality, great personal attention. Not too crowded (shhhh....lets keep it this way!) We ate here 3 nights during our stay - each time wonderful! Suggestion.. Skip the rolls & sushi rice - go straight for the sashimi platter. All the fish is amazingly fresh & flavorful on its own. No need to add the extras, although delicious as well!

Meh. Meh, meh, meh. Perhaps I'm a bit jaded, but the tourist thing is just no fun. The food was fine, but I've had better in my own town. For the price...no way. BUT, the service was absolutely great. Servers were wonderful.

We went to Japengo couple times since we stayed at Hyatt during our trip, the service was great! The food was awesome! I love their sushi and sashimi, very FRESH!! That's sushi & sashimi suppose to be!!!! Desert was nice as well, with the beautiful view, you will love it!!

  • R C.

so-so sushi, irritating lighting & music (music from hyatts bar combined with whatever new age sounds japengo plays) doesnt make for a relaxing dinner...defeats the water view/resort appeal. If you're in the resort it is a fine option, but I wouldn't bother with a special trip.

Another awesome night. Jimmy was great as usual with the aloha spirit and friendly smile. Wayne our favorite server was the best. We love this guy. These are the two people who make us keep coming back. Good job guys. We love you. By the way...the other day some people vacationing here asked us the best place to get good sushi. They were going to go to Sansei. We said "no don't go there, go to Japengo" They were so happy we made this suggestion to them. 1. Any rolls are good. Fresh as can be. 2. Duck potstickers are good. 3. Calamari very good 4. Malasadas so good 5. Pineapple upside down cake -oh yeah 6. Deserts are all so tasty

First your in a resort on Maui so expect your food to cost you an arm and leg. That said my kids loved the noodle dish on the kids menu as did I , next up were the honolulu, rainbow and dragon rolls that were all quality and no bite was left unbitten...besides the bill this place was great.

Excellent service, amazing view, and a 15% kamaiana discount! What's not to love? The sushi was amazing. We had a tootsie roll, my first time having lobster teriyaki and mushrooms in a roll, very tasty, and something else that had hamachi and salmon on top. I loved all their sushi. Very big rolls. We shared a half portion of the steamed clams, came with pita bread, and a half order of the curry calamari, as well as half order of the thai chili king crab. The crab is normally priced at $40, but the half is $20, and a steal. The plate has so much crab it's ridiculous. The flaming pineapple cake was superb. The creme brulee on top of the cake was so smooth and creamy. If you're staying here, just stay on property and enjoy a fabulous meal, without having to deal with the drama of trying to get a table at Sansei.

It's been three chances I've given this place and still I can only rate it as okay. I detest their rolls. Too big, too much rice, too much sauce. I like to taste the flavors of the fish or shrimp not have it drowned in sauce. Kioso in Kihei has spoiled me! On valentines day I ate here and had an amazing bone in rib eye and I've also had the kobe kalbi and both steaks we soft and perfectly cooked. I also enjoyed the watermelon and hamachi appetizer. I've had the crab here and it was missing spicy heat for me and was way over salted. It's funny that the waiter recommended the fried rice but during my first meal here but it was my favorite item. While I'm not big on the food I do have to compliment the amazing staff here. Every time I've eaten here the waiter/waitress was amazing. Too bad I can't say the same for the food.

What a great find! I was asking around The pool for suggestions as to where to get good sushi. We were at the westin, and walked all the way down to the Hyatt. It was a bit of a walk, but we were glad to wKj back after eating way too much sushi. Lived the spicy tuna roll, and my husband had the Big roll. There is a reason it's called a big roll. Should be called the huge roll. Our eyes were way bigger than our stomachs, and we also ordered fried rice...don't do it! Too much food! Great outdoor atmosphere and great food! Pricey, but everything in Maui is pricey!

We went here twice during our trip this year, the first time was for my birthday and the second time for happy hour. The sushi is really the best sushi in Maui but it comes with a price. Our favorites were the 50/50 because we ordered it twice for happy hour (regular price tho), the big roll, and the clams (happy hour price is 50% less but you get a smaller portion too, we got five orders to satisfy our cravings). I'd have to say that their happy hour prices are reasonable but you still end up spending a lot because their food is so good that you'll keep ordering more. The drinks are really good too. Try the strawberry shortcake and the Ka'anapali pie for desserts. The ambiance is nice, the seatings are mostly outside, come by 6pm and you can watch the sunset at 6:30pm. There's also a live band around 6:30pm in the bar area.

The family came here for our last dinner (together) in the island... and it was a good dinner indeed. We made reservations since we're a big party... got seated by the beach / water area outside - it was windy that night so I was a bit cold but with the sake / champagne - that was easily fixed. Our server Chris was friendly / understanding / prompt with our food and drinks. He actually kept us entertained while the rest of the family were playing tag team with the nephew. We ended up ordering the following: - JAPENGO FRIED RICE = this was actually really good... which surprised us a lot. It was tasty... no skimping with the ingredients... good portion to share with the group. - Wagyu beef dish = it was well seasoned and grilled perfectly... juicy but not bloody and it was tender. Unfortunately... I ended up forgetting the rest of the dish since I was also in and out of the dinner table... The food in general were all good... there wasn't any dish that I didn't like... I know it's a hit or miss with the rest of the Yelpers but I guess that night... we got lucky. Thanks Chris for making it work with our requests!

Located in the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa. It is a 5 minute walk from Whalers Village. Pricey, but SOO worth the money! Food is 5/5 (must order: small side order of the fried rice, but do not order the King crab. If you are craving crab, go to the Westin Ka'anapali Villas Resort for their all you can eat snow/dungeness crab dinner on Tuesdays) Sushi 5/5 (so fresh! 50-50 roll is amazing. No imitation crab here. Only opilio crab, the way it should be :) ) Drinks/cocktails 5/5 Service 5/5 Amazing views at sunset. Ambiance is relaxing and beautiful.

After eating on the Maui for the past week my wife and I decided to stop in at Japengo for a few rolls and sashimi. After being slightly disappointed with Sensai (rolls and sashimi) we were looking forward to a great meal......we very impressed with freshness of the fish and selection of the rolls. We had the Big Roll, the SWAT Roll and some AHI-Big Eye Tuna.....hands down the best sushi on Maui!

Great atmosphere and view of the ocean. The 50/50 sushi roll and the hamachi was delicious. The Clams were ok. I love guava but the guava cheesecake tasted like soap.

Beautiful location and good, flavorful food and drinks. We sat outside and enjoyed the view of the pool, surrounding garden, and ocean. I really enjoyed the white sangria. It was sweet and tropical but definitely not overly sweet. The edamame was like any other Japanese restaurant's and the miso soup was the same. The veggie sushi was tasty and a bit different than what I've had before. It was wrapped in a soy wrapper instead of seaweed, and takes two bites to devour one piece... I don't recommend shoving an entire piece in your mouth at once, unless you're a sushi-eating pro. The fried rice was probably the best part. We ordered a veggie version with no meat or seafood and it was very flavorful. The tofu veggie stir fry had nice flavors too, although bok choy tends to be watery and bland. I didn't try any of the blackened ahi sushi roll but it looked yummy. The brownie banana ice cream dessert slice was delicious as well. You might want to order your own or just share with one other person because it's on the small side. Be prepared to spend a lot here because it's kind of expensive! A special occasion dining experience for sure.

Just had dinner here last night and thought it was great. My wife and friends ordered a bunch of different items and shared everything. The sushi and fried rice we very basic and nothing special. The entrees were amazing. We had a special which was pork with goat cheese and macadamia nuts and a steak with lobster tail and tempura vegetables both entrees were over the top with great presentation. So much so we had to wait till our wife's got back to the table before eating it so they could see the presentation. Everything was really nice, service got off to a slow start but a soon as we said something and older Japanese man stay right with us and took great care of us.

Had dinner and drinks here on our first night. The pupu platter was bigger and tastier than expected and a happy hour special. We had two sushi rolls as well and both were good. Kind of pricey but not worse than expected at a Maui resort. The staff was pleasant and they had love music as well as great ocean views.

Very average. Service is poor and everyone from reception to the bus boys use the busy excuse. Fish is fresh but nothing original. Half the restaurant is inside near the kitchen which doesn't add anything to the experience. That said the kitchen staff is quick to yell when overworked.

More of a 4.5. If this was a stand alone restaurant, it would be 5 stars and comparable to Mama's Fish House. That side, the price for sushi is the best on Maui. Quality was exception. The service staff seems experienced and knowledge. Even more so than Mama's. There's not a lot of good sushi options on Maui (Sansei and Koiso) and those places require advance reservation (easily to rsvp here because they have the space and it's on open table) and probably will not have the great ambience as this place. There's a nice little lounge and great views of the ocean and sunset. There's a also a nice lounge with live music to relax before or after dinner. Awesome relaxing vacation spot. I don't understand the complaints about value either. This was the best value restaurants on Maui. If you want sashimi, get the $30 moriawase. That's 12 pieces of sashimi and even though it says chef's choice the awesome staff will just get what you want...Also mention maui dining app for a free appetizer. Definitely 5-star if it was not for the few resort quirks. It's a solid 4.5. It was mainly the lack of restroom nearby and the terrible valet service. You have to cross the lobby to a small restroom. The valet was jammed packed because apparently they valet luau guests as well.

Decided to give Maui Japengo a try since we love the one in Waikiki so much. The location is top notch. Not on the water but close enough that you can see and hear it without the chilling wind effect. Seating arrangements were great too; not too close together but not too far apart that it looked awkward. We only tried a few things on the menu but we loved what we had. Clams were very good, a little spicy but it was a good spicy. The Big Roll lived up to its name and was very filling. The Flat Iron Waygu with the edamame mash potato was top notch. We were very impressed. Our service was even better than the food! Sherri, I believe her name was, gave us valuable insight on the menu and really did a fantastic job!

Decent happy hour from 5-6:30 . By decent I mean compared to other places within walking distance . $45 for a 6 oz filet mignon? Haha you've got to be kidding me. I ran for the hills before I even ordered. Went down to Ruth Chris steakhouse and got a steak that was twice as big for the same price and likely was way better.

Japengo is a nice place to enjoy the evening. I highly recommend the mango passion drink. Main course was the flat iron steak, very well cooked and comes with the best mashed potatoes I've had. Sushi rolls are very well portioned bu t I dont recommend the hand rolls.

First, thank you to Jimmy (the host), and Bobby (the amazing server) for two of the best meals we have ever had at a restaurant. This place has unreal views, on a rock with fountains and tiki torches. Overlooks the sunset (we did this both times). GREAT food- we have had several things, (sushi, salads, fish, stir drys). The prie fix is a great value. I loved how easy going and not trying to be something they are not. What sets the place apart- is everything is good. The food is good. Views are perfect. Facility is amazing. Drinks are great. The employees are soooooo cool. We had friends arrive late to dinner, and had already made a 4 person reservation. They were not there to meet us in time to eat, but were able to come at the tail end. We had already taken a table for two, and without hesitation, Bobby grabbed us two extra chairs so we could be together and enjoy our time. Most places would never dream of doing something like this. Both times on this trip we were amazed at it all. You will be amazed, and there is now two must dos on every trip we take to Maui (the other is Kimos at sunset with Hula Pie). Visited January 2014

Hands down the best tasting meal I had while on the island. Unfortunately it was also hands down the worst experience with service. We sat on the patio and our drinks were bone dry throughout the meal. We had to bring the check to the counter to pay because the server never came back. Compliments to the chef for such fresh and great tasting sushi! Get a manager who will not overseat and will jump in and help the staff. Such a shame such a beautiful restaurant with great good had such subpar service.

location was nice, depending on where your table is at, you get a great view of the ocean. Food was ok, nothing spectacular, definitely not worth it for the price. But then again you are in Hawaii... so expect the price to be higher than mainland. The service was good, they were very attentive without being annoying. Over all it was just a ok place to eat with nice views.

  • Howard T.

Yet another amazing restaurant on Maui! If you can, hold out for a table on the patio around sunset (need to book a day or two in advance) and the views will blow your mind! As for the food, the down-to-earth friendly unpretentious service and you have a winning combination here! Visit them and enjoy the experience.

Well executed sushi rolls - very fresh fish (it should be in Hawaii!) and creative combinations of flavors. Pretty pricey but no more so than every other place in Kaanapali.

Yellowtail sashimi melted in my mouth like heaven....with a little shiso leaf, and thinly sliced daikon...it was perrrrrrfection! Tootsie Roll was spectacular as well!!!! The Poke was different...packaged in a roll with nori, and then deep fried with crunchies on the outside. It was good, but I prefer regular poke instead of this unique version. (The poke at Umalu by the pool is aaawesome served with taro chips!) Grilled Ahi was pretty good, but tasted even better with the garlic rice it came with! Delicious! In the evening, there's live music and has a nice relaxing ambiance! - takes song requests!

Let me start out by saying that our server Wayne, was great and the service was fantastic. The rating is based on food/taste alone. We were staying at the Hyatt & decided to come to Japengo to try something new. We've gone to all our usual dinner spots in the Ka'anapali, Kapalua & Lahaina area. Japengo is very overpriced! First off, my sister had the vegetables with tofu for her entree- for $24, the least they can do, is give you a side of rice along with it. I expected the sushi to be out of this world being in Maui and having access to fresh fish but I wasn't impressed. I had 3 rolls-the veggie, the tootsie, & the swat. For being priced in the $20-24 range for sushi, the flavor & taste weren't all there. I really wish I would have liked it more since my expectations were set high. If you want sushi, try Sansei in Kapalua (located by the Ritz Carlton).

The view is fabulous and unlike mama's fish house , they welcomed our large party. The food was delicious, my husband is not a sushi lover but thanks to my sons in law and daughters I was able to experience it, all the rolls were beautiful and tasty, my husband dish was very good too. The server was professional and pleasant, we had drinks on the patio before the meal, sweet spot. Overall a great experience , pricey but after all you are in Maui , will become one of our regular spot

This is my favorite spot on Maui. If you are looking for a nice, romantic, relaxed place to eat or grab drinks you should come here. We like to sit outside where there is open seating. The atmosphere is really nice with tiki torches and trees all around. I love the big, comfortable chairs. Life music was just perfect. Guitar and vocal by one talented hawaiian man. The food is amazing. The sushi and fish was out of this world. Definitely order the black cod from the starter menu. Love it. The drinks were ok. My husband ordered the 1944 mai tai and they brought the Maui Tai instead which was great. Then they brought the 1944 (too much rum in it, too strong). They didn't charge us for the Maui Tai. So not a big deal! The service was great! Our check was like $120 plus tip and we had 5 drinks (one free), 2 starters and 1 sushi (3 sushi rolls), and desert. So not too bad for Maui.

  • Lauren W.

Japengo was pretty good, however I have definitely had better sushi. I would have given 5 stars based on the view alone, but the sushi was just mediocre. I ordered the edamame, blackened ahi sushi roll, and the banana/chocolate/ice cream dessert (I forgot the name). Everything was just okay... nothing was amazing, besides the view. I wouldn't recommend the desert. Also, the hey validate when you park valet so that is a plus.

Pricey - some items are very small for what you pay, however, the meal was delicious. The bartender wasn't the nicest guy, but when you're on your last leg of vacation, you can overlook those sorts of things. It was a great good-bye to paradise meal.

Can't say this place is "A-ok," hence the 2 stars. Way over-hyped -- everything, the host/ess, cocktails, appetizers, all the way to desserts, screams "hotel restaurant." It's a beautiful place to have dinner, and I think people get carried away with that. My wife and I each had a cocktail -- they're served in tall, pilsner-like glasses, and look huge, but aren't. My mojito was undistinguished. We shared a decent bottle of sauvignon blanc, Curry Dusted Calamari, Broiled Kasu Alaskan Black Cod, the Korean Seafood Pancake, the Tootsie roll, and nigiri Tobiko. Could have gone more toward sushi, but didn't, because we've eaten sushi day after day here. We also had the Molten Chocolate Cake for dessert. Bleh. Overall the food is overpriced, bland, textureless and boring. Did I mention heavy? I wouldn't eat here again. The $200 would be better spent at Sensei, where a vastly more creative meal can be had for -- oh, wait, I wouldn't need $200 at Sensei.

Wonderful! Hubby and I had dinner there. We were originally sat outside, but it was really quite warm and humid that night so we asked to sit in the sushi lounge where it is air conditioned. We loved it! The sushi was truly amazing. The sushi chefs are so talented and friendly, but not overly intrusive or chatty. They were local boys who were so easy to talk with. When the found out we were local residents all the way from Wailuku, they told our wait staff to give us the *Ohana* discount. Woo hoo!!! All in all.... beautiful and relaxing atmosphere, attentive staff, fast service and amazing sushi!! Definitely going back!!!!

My husband and I have eaten here every time we stay at the Hyatt Regency. We love Japengo. And last Saturday was no different . It was our 28th wedding anniversary. Our dinner was superb, the service top notch, and dessert on the house, with Happy Anniversary written on the plate in chocolate. Beautiful presentation. Thank you Japengo for a wonderful evening!

Went to Japengo twice during our stay at the Hyatt, once for happy hour and once for some takeout to eat in our room. Considering that Japengo is located within a resort, I was pretty happy with the $4 beer and wine selection at happy hour. As others have mentioned, there is no sushi on the happy hour menu but there are about 4-5 appetizers to choose from. We ended up getting some calamari which was ok. What makes this happy hour great is the view from the bar of the beach and ocean and the live music. On our second trip to Japengo we got the 50/50 roll and the SWAT roll, both were good. Pricewise, the rolls were a little expensive, but nothing outrageous.

It's a cute place. Service was mediocre. Our waitress kept forgetting to give my sister a menu, plates and utensils. The hoisin ribs appetizer was really good. Some pieces were more tender than others...I was hoping they'd all be tender. The duck potstickers were nothing special. We ordered several sushi rolls and nigiri. The salmon and hamachi nigiri were some of the best I've had. The slices were thick and fresh. The big roll, Hana and tootsie rolls were really good. The Honolulu and blackened ahi rolls were nothing special. The fried rice wasn't that good. If I ever went here again, I'd just stick with the ribs and the 3 rolls that I enjoyed.

When we arrived, we were taken to the best table in the house, overlooking the pool and an incredible coastal view north and south. We started with the Curry Dusted Calamari, which by itself was pretty mustardy, but with the chukka salad, it was great. Our server Joey recommended the Big Roll, the Honolulu Roll, and the Blackened Ahi Roll..and WOW! All 3 were huge, and amazing! We also ordered some ahi sushi, which wasn't on the menu, but it was amazing as well! We had a double order of that, then went for seconds. The fresh wasabi and white ginger were excellent. For dessert, we had Ka'anapali Pie, which consisted of layers of chocolate ganache, macadamia nut ice cream, fresh bananas, and an Oreo crust. So delicious!!! This was the best sushi we have had, hands down, on Maui. Excellent service, food, ambience, and overall experience. Mahalo Joey & everyone else at Japengo!

Nice dinner at the Hyatt. We were seated promptly and treated to a complimentary valet. Service was great and attentive. I strongly suggest requesting a table outside. Given our large group we sat inside and it was pretty chilly. You will also not hear any music. Sushi was just OK. Tootsie roll is not worth the 24$ although it is filling and well-made. Go for the split plates like Chow Fun and the Mahi.

I was expecting a better experience at this restaurant just given the prices and the reputation of the Hyatt alone. Sushi rolls are ridiculously overpriced for what you get- a small teeny tiny piece of fish with lots of rice. $160 for 4 and still hungry.

Joey is an amazing server at Japengo! He's super attentive and made the best recommendations! He made the whole Dinning experience! The sushi is soo good and the potions are huge!!! The fish is fresh as can be! One of the best restaurants in Maui by far! Great food and impeccable service!

Horrible service and over priced sushi, no thanks! We were seated and left there for over 20 minutes before I finally flagged down the host that sat us. We finally got service and no apology. During our wait we also saw several tables served that arrived after us. We would have left but we had just checked into this hotel and we were ready to just stay put for dinner. The rolls were less than impressive and the service did not improve.

Casual by day, more dressy at night with a wonderful view of the Hawaiian Coastline. Delicate and fresh sushi, we ooh'd and ahh'd at each roll that was presented. The JAPENGO FRIED RICE is worth every gram of carbs, with an interesting balance of cinnamon and cumin spice. The DUCK MEATBALLS will melt in your mouth. You must not miss the FLAMING PIÑA COLADA CRÈME- grilled upside pineapple cake, served with an individual portion of coconut creme brulee, topped with a rum caramel sauce. I meal to remember in Maui.

Food is very good, but the service isn't great and it is very expensive. Quantities are on the small side, but acceptable. The three of us shared all the food, but I would recommend at least two or three items for a single person. Total, we spent over 160$, but were reasonably full. We got two salads, which were pretty small, especially for the price. The one with prawns and mango was nice, but the tatsoi was a bit too salty. We also got the eel/avocado roll and the spicy tuna; both tasted fine, but each piece was WAY too big, with too much rice. Sushi should be single mouthful sized, and the spicy tuna in particular was too big. The quantity was not bad, with ~8 pieces each, but also was ~20$ each so not great in the price per piece. We got the sashimi, which was very fresh; I liked the shrimp a lot in particular. The uni was really fresh as well, and super tasty. We also got a half plate of the noodles, which were really good -- lots of seafood, and came out cool enough to eat but still warm. For dessert, we got the cheesecake, which was wonderfully fluffy, and the espressotini, which was a pretty decent size.

This place is incredible! Amazing sushi, fried rice, drinks, staff, and view! Always love music playing and it's very modern and romantic! Definitely check this place out if you are craving some sushi! Every time I have been here has been flawless! Highly recommend!

Worth the small wait. Food was uniquely wonderful. Service was fantastic. Black cod miso dish melted on our dancing palates. Desserts were amazing, especially the cocunut creme flambe pinnapple upside down cake. We've found our Sansei replacement within walking distance of anywhere in Ka'anapali.

Great food! Excellent service! Beautiful scenery! Definitely recommend it! All the sushi rolls were delicious. The malasadas were also a big hit! Not sure if I like the guava dip, but the chocolate & caramel were yummy!

Food was excellent. Well balanced and well thought out flavors. Curry seafood was perfect. Sashimi was fatty, flavorful and melts in your mouth. Ahi dinner was delightful. House made soy sauce was surprisingly good. Some minuses, though - service was fair at best. Server was very nice but initial round of drinks took 15 minutes to arrive and needed a reminder. Server also got us the wrong appetizer. We ordered sashimi and got sushi. Water was not refilled until we specifically requested it. Prices are resort prices and high but that's what you expect at a place like this. Overall, good food that is overpriced but simultaneously on par for a resort. Service could have been a lot better on our night but willing to give a second chance. I'm not rushing to go back but am open to a return trip. However, nearby Roy's is likely a better choice.

I wish there was a way to give a million stars! Not only was the food delicious, but the entire dining experience was incredible. I would suggest sitting outside, or ask for an ocean view table. Our server was very sweet, and she very knowledgeable about everything on the menu. She actually guided us through the menu, starting with appetizers, and concluding with the most popular entrees, as well as her favorites. We decided on the Blackened Ahi Roll, the Honolulu Roll, and the Japengo Fried Rice with prawns. I would suggest choosing a few dishes, and take it from there. The portions are very generous, and we were very full after sharing these 3 items. I really have to say that the experience my boyfriend and I had at Japengo in Maui made our vacation that much better. I can't wait to go back and have another amazing experience at Japengo. :)

I think this place has a service issue of some sort as the reviews seem to be very inconsistent when it comes to the wait staff. Either you aren't staffing enough some days, or you have a handful of servers that are terrible. I loved the food. The ahi appetizer was perfect and I loved my rolls. The ambiance is also quite pretty on the patio. The plating was great and although a bit pricey, I would come back for the food. That being said, the service was terrible. Took us 20 minutes to even be acknowledged. Another 10 for waters. It was probably 40-50 minutes before we even got our drinks. Just completely unacceptable. There weren't enough people to warrant this. Furthermore, when they brought out my water glass it has a big lump of something on the rim. Totally gross. THEN when they brought out my wine glass, there was very clear lipstick on the rim! They apologized profusely, but I have no doubts their dish washing is not good at all. Oh also...there was live music that night and the guy was great, except for he for some reason felt like he should sing some of the songs in a woman's voice. Like, he sang as Katy Perry. It was just bizarre. I was ok with it, but I don't think older people would like it very much. Sort of unsettling.

Seriously! This is a beautiful restaurant! How often do you get to eat sushi on a lanai in maui. Ok, the rolls are expensive... $20/each? They are pretty big though and you'll be filled up on one pretty much. The sushi won't blow your mind, but it's pretty good and I enjoyed it... it was fresh, tastey, and the ambience set the stage for a great meal. Oh, and they make some great martinis at their bar. Probably the best restaurant at the Hyatt.

I think if this was anywhere in CA, I'd be giving it 3 stars or less. But because of the ingredients available, it was delicious. I had the Blackened Ahi and Rainbow roll and the fish was super fresh. You just don't see redness on the tuna like this anywhere else. Happy hour is 5-6:30 so try getting there early and the bar is open seating.

My husband and I decided to walk down to Japengo at the Hyatt from our hotel just north on Ka'anapali beach on a night when we were craving sushi. We loved the food so much that we came back for our final dinner on Maui later that week! Our first visit was on a Tuesday night a little before 8 p.m., and although we were not hotel guests and didn't have reservations, we were seated promptly at a nice table with a view of the resort and ocean. Our second visit was a Thursday evening right at 6, no reservations, and we got an even better table with an unobstructed view. As other reviewers mentioned, the service was a little slow on the first night. We experienced no delays at all on our second visit; therefore, if you don't want to wait for anything, make sure you arrive early. The ambience at Japengo is spectacular; open-air, tasteful decor, great scenery. It did not feel like a typical hotel restaurant. We started with cocktails both nights. On both visits, my husband ordered the Rappongi Fling, which I tasted - interesting, fresh mix of flavors, but because of its sake base, quite light on the alcohol. I ordered the Wild Sparkling Lychee the first night, which I wish I had gotten again on our next visit; the second time I had the Japengo Mojito, which was stronger but less tasty. On our first visit, we ordered the abalone appetizer (which was much smaller than expected and came AFTER our rolls), then shared the 50/50, Wow, and Honolulu rolls. All three were fantastic! The Honolulu roll, although quite simple, was our favorite, primarily because the fish was the star and it was fresh and tasty. That was plenty of food for two people. For dessert, we ordered the Halo Halo - WARNING: unless you are Filipino (as I am), you will not like this! Super authentic - the chef is Filipino - but if you know Filipinos, you know our desserts often include flavor combinations that are not exactly mainstream. On our second visit, we decided to go with the regular dinner menu, and it was another great decision. We started with the kobe carpaccio, which was hands down the BEST appetizer we had during our trip (and we had a lot of great food!). My husband ordered the filet & prawns, which he enjoyed (warning: prawns come with the heads on them; again, Filipino chef). I had the Mahi Mahi, which was better than the fish I'd had at Lahaina Grill. Dessert the second night was coconut creme brulee and the mochi; I wouldn't do the mochi again, as it was good but wasn't anything different from mochi I'd had before, but the coconut creme brulee was to die for. We've eaten here twice and I'd certainly come back for more on our next trip. Best meals we had on Maui!

Japengo was one of the dining highlights of our trip to Maui - easily the best dining experience of the trip. The food and service were both amazing - food came out at just the right pace, server was friendly and professional, and everything tasted freshly prepared. My wife enjoyed the sushi and said that most of it was best-in-class, though there were a few pieces that she wasn't a fan of (I honestly don't remember which fish/pieces they were). I had red meat, as a non-seafood eater, but the hot food was amazing even if this is a sushi place. I'd come back here in a heartbeat.

If only the service was better. My husband and I had our last meal in maui here. Pros: Great view Huge menu Sushi was delicious. Had the lobster dyno-mite and it was so sweet and flavorful and salty at the same time. But $$$. Cons: Price. I ordered $20 crab cakes and they were the size of a silver dollar. The rolls were also overpriced...but I guess that's how the whole island is. Service. The service was so bad we had to ask the busboy where our waiter was. Seeing it was our honeymoon it kind of killed our special night. Honestly...WHERE WAS OUR WAITER? Ordered the sashimi platter and they gave me octopus...that was a waste of $30 bucks Have I had better sushi? Yes...but this was one of the only restaurant in maui that didn't leave me disappointed... except for that Gosh awful service.

My husband & I were recommended to come here by our surfing instructor. He said the food was insane & it was! We eat a lot of sushi and this was hands down the best! The service was fantastic too! For dessert, if you don't save room for the Kahlua mud pie your missing out!

Updated review: We had a really bad experience at this restaurant a few weeks earlier and had made a complaint. We were invited back for a complimentary dinner. Everyone was amazing and the restaurant defiantly redeemed themselves. Our server Joey was very very accommodating, funny and put up with us six crazy ladies very well ( I will admit it we can be a little much). The chefs sent out many extra dishes for us to try and they were amazing! Best dishes of the night; honolulu roll (actually all the sushi), ribs were great, tempura shrimp roll, mashed potatoes with onions, and the desert was the BEST!!!!! Everything about desert was fantastic! We had one of each but my favorite was defiantly the layered brownie with ice cream chocolate and mac nut! Thank you to Joey for making such a memorable night! If you go ask for Joey

I am giving this place three stars for service only, the food is plentiful and delicious, and the view is one of the nicest on the island. The problem with this restaurant is simple. They don't have enough servers, and the servers are responsible for getting everything to your table. Ours had a helper, but he too was stretched thin. Our table was left with empty plates and drinks that needed to be refilled long ago. Our server was great, when she was able to get to our table. This place caters to families with small children. Lots of heads to tend with. I'll go back for the food, but I will eat at the Sushi Bar section. Wake up management, your losing money by being cheap. When people are waiting, they are not eating or drinking your expensive food!!!!!!!! Update: I have been back 3 more times since my original review. Each time I have eaten in the Sushi Bar section. The service in this section is excellent. Obviously the servers do not have to go to far to get your food. The room does not have much of a view, but it does have A/C. The Sushi Bar has quickly become my favorite spot to eat on the W/Side.

First we had the most amazing view from our table... Amazing!! It was the perfect last dinner on our honeymoon. Next best thing was we were able to pick items and order half so we could try more items. You have to try the china town chow fun... Amazing!! I wasn't a fan of the ribs or the clams as our appetizers. We did have the crunchy roll and I wasn't as thrilled as other places I have tried. The shortcake was amazing... The lavender scone was wonderful with the creams and strawberries. Wonderful.

I think there are other great spots to check out before I would recommend this place. Some of the sushi was a bit crazy...way too much going on. I like when they feature the fish, which I did not think they did. Prices of course were steep as it is part of a nice hotel.

This is one of the best restaurants we have eve eaten at. The ambiance is great, the calamari is AMAZING, the sushi is fantastic, and the pork was to die for! We will eat here every night when we are here in Maui. It is worth whatever it takes to get you here. It is also family friendly. Go now!

Very disappointed with this place. The sushi was average. Presentation was great but I have ate better tasting (and cheaper) sushi in Indiana. For a place who charges $20-25 for a sushi roll and $35-50 for a dinner I am going to have high expectations. This food was not special in any way. Our food was brought out to the wrong table beside us. It eventually got taken back and people who sat down after us got served before we did. Our food was brought out much later and the waiter blamed it on a mix up in the kitchen. They made no attempt to make it up to us, but on the bright side they still expected us to pay our $150 bill. Very disappointing experience. I would never come back here under any circumstance.

We stayed at the Hyatt for a week so naturally we had to hit up Japengo. As to be expected, the sashimi was very good. We ordered their fried rice and that was delicious and filling. I have to be honest. I really don't remember much of the meal except the food was good and the service was friendly because we spent most of the evening doing sake bombs. A nice upscale place like this allowing us to do sake bombs? A-OK in my book.

Yep, a 5 star rating! I have had sushi all over the globe and I have to say that this is one of the best locations I have been to. The location is beautiful and the staff is very welcoming and hospitable. Upon sitting down at the sushi bar we were served wasabi and ginger on a banana leaf. The chefs immediately engaged us and asked about our preferences making several immediate suggestions. The fish was beyond fresh and the rolls were delicious and creative. We were so happy with our first experience that we returned a few days later. Upon telling the head chef about a negative experience we had at Sensai down the road the night before he bent over backwards to thank us for coming back to his establishment. He even made my wife her favorite roll that she gets at home after scouring the resort for cream cheese! Then he didn't even charge is for it and said it was just a thanks for coming back! So cool! We will always make Japengo a stop when visiting Maui. Thanks to the Japengo staff for one of the best experiences of our honeymoon. P.S. Make sure to ask for the chefs special... you won't regret it!

Awesome sushi restaurant. I loved my sushi. Very fresh. Black miso cod appetizer was amazing. Beautiful view. Bring a sweater @ night bc it can get cold. Salmon sushi & yellowtail sushi were great. I got a side of ponzu to go with my sushi. If you like sushi come here. If you are not a big fan of sushi then I wouldn't come here.

Food was great. Management was terrible. As we approached hostess desk we easily overheard the manager talking about how quickly wanted to overturn tables to get people In and out. Then they tried to seat us at a 6 person table away from any view in a completely empty restaurant. Upon asking for a better table, they reluctantly sat us closer but we were still obviously not considered to be of any importance. We sat for 2 hours and watched many 'better view' tables sit empty. Not impressed. You will be treated better elsewhere.

This place is great and I would have loved to give it 5 stars but the service was lacking and it was a shame because the food was excellent and the atmosphere at sunset was awesome. I had the chef selected sashimi and the fish was fresh and cut perfectly. The ahi tuna dish was excellent and a good sized piece of ahi made it a nice dish to share. The miso soup was forgettable but the flaming piña colada creme was an perfect finale to dinner!

Best sushi on Maui! I recommend Omakase (Chef's choice) sushi. The Korean Pancake and Curry Dusted Calamari is very good. Save room for the Malasada for dessert. Service is very good, I like to sit at the sushi bar so I can chat with the sushi chefs.

My new bride and I stayed at the Hyatt for our honeymoon. Our first night we decided to celebrate and dine at Japengo. We were really excited because this was advertised to be a great Asian fusion restaurant. I was a bit disappointed. Let me start with the good things: 1. The location and the decor was awesome! We sat on the patio over looking the ocean. The breeze was fresh and really highlighted how special this occasion was. The lighting was very romantic but also relaxed. We did not feel like we needed to be in formal dining attire. 2. The menu selection was very diverse and on point. I could tell that this restaurant had a theme and its menu reflected the theme. Now for the bad: 1. We expected a five star restaurant. After all this is the signature restaurant of a high-end resort. The price and atmosphere all indicated that we would receive five star service. We were disappointed. Our waitress was very nice to us but was obviously busy. When we tried to speak with her about what we should order she attempted to make reservations but at the same time I could see her looking over at her other tables. I don't fault her for doing this, I used to be a server at Red Robin. I would often do that on a busy night. I know that servers have a lot to deal with and a lot of expectations to meet. But, the fact was that were were not at a Red Robin. We were paying fillet minion prices and getting hamburger service. I felt that she could have been more focused and attentive. She was slow. Our appetizers came just a minute before our meal. And we had to wait a while after we were done for her to clear our plates. That brings me to another point: 2. If you are paying so much for a meal you expect that there will be several service staff with individual tasks. We expected our waitress to ensure that our food came out on time and evenly spaced. We also expect that there would be persons assigned to clear the tables (even Red Robin has that). Perhaps Japengo does have such persons, but they were absent from our table. Our server did the clearing. 3. Food! When paying near to top dollar, I expect top quality. We tried the fried rice, and several rolls. They were all good, but nothing I haven't had before at any sushi restaurant in Chino Hills. I could have had the same meal to go for less than 1/4 the price. I you have had good sushi before and know what to expect, then I do not recommend this place. You will be disappointed. Save your money and go to any chain sushi place for half the price.

I am a huge fan of the Japengo's in Honolulu and so I was excited to try their restaurant in Maui. Big difference and a big disappointment. It tasted at the same level of "mall sushi". We had a couple of rolls along with a special request of scorched hamachi which is a specialty at their place in Honolulu. It was a big letdown on all the order. Not bad just boring and I rate it so-so because the cost for 4 orders of sushi for two people plus one dessert was $96. STEEP. For that kind of money and an average of $22 a roll the food should have been excellent and it was not. I was bummed.

First time we came here for a complimentary champagne and app, we liked it. The second time we came, we stated we were only here for dessert, quick and easy. The server gave us menus to review and walked away nicely. We sat there for over 15 minutes and he never returned. You could clearly see we didn't even have glasses of water to start off with. we stayed at hyatt for a week and we were not happy with japengos customer service. Very disappointed. We got up and left.

Love the atmosphere here! The old Cascades at the Hyatt was transformed into a beautiful oasis with stunning views of the Pacific. There are several outside and inside seating areas, an open bar area, and a sushi bar -- all are very attractive and comfortable spaces in which to dine. The Pacific Rim style menu, complete with full sushi menu as well, has so much to offer, it was difficult to decide what to order. My eyes are always bigger than my stomach! Typically, if there is sushi, we go for it, so we started with the Tootsie Roll (Soft Shell Crab, Snow Crab, Cucumber, Shiitake, Avocado, Lobster-Teriyaki). The roll was huge -- more than two bites per piece with a total of 8 pieces, which is quite unusual. We asked for 1/2 with avocado and 1/2 without. They brought it out on two plates, separated for us. Absolutely delicious, especially the lobster-teriyaki sauce. For our entree, my husband wanted the China Town Chow Fun with Spicy Ground Pork, Day Boat Scallops, Crab, New Caledonia Shrimp, Oyster Sauce, Mushroom Shoyu, but once I spied the Vietnamese Style Kurobuta Pork with Asparagus, Portabella Mushrooms, Japanese Eggplant, Jalapenos, Glass Noodles, and Hoisin Sauce, I convinced him to split it with me, along with a side of Forbidden Black Rice. It was plenty for two people to split. The Pork was dazzling -- a beautiful presentation to start, and then a burst of flavors in my mouth with the light spice of the jalapeno and the sweetness of the hoisin sauce. Combine that with the coconutty Forbidden Black Rice (they could easily put this on the dessert menu), and the meal was just a perfect medley of stunning freshness and flavor. Service was good . . . a little slow at times, but the restaurant manager did come by and chat about our experience and apologized for any wait. Considering so many restaurants rush you in and turn tables too quickly, it was really a pleasure to be able to sit there, enjoy our cocktails and soak up the atmosphere. Speaking of cocktails, we had a lovely Asian Pear-Suasion made with vodka and sake. Seems like the Asian Pear cocktails made with sake are the latest and greatest of cocktail creations on this particular island! Prices were reasonable for a resort restaurant. Considering the size of the portions, the quality of the food, and the beautiful surroundings, it is well worth the experience and the cost. P.S. If you are there in the cooler months, make sure you bring a sweater or jacket for the cooler evenings . . . especially if you sit outside.

This is by far one of my favorite restaurants not just because of the location and atmosphere, but also for the amazing food and service. I really don't think one could go wrong with anything on the menu. The rolls are really good but they also serve really fresh fish for sashimi . One of my favorite dishes was the appatizer of hamachi and watermelon, YUM! They also have a decent happy hour menu if you're looking for something cheaper and quick. There is no sushi on the happy hour menu besides some handrolls, but the clams were really good. The prices were higher than normal, but its Maui. Everything is going to be more expensive than the mainland.

The food was great! The atmosphere was even better! I had a reservation for 6:00pm and it was the perfect time to eat outside and enjoy the sunset. We had a Rainbow roll (sushi), a Prime Ribeye Steak, and seared Ahi. It was all very good! And the servers do a great job and are very friendly! They'd even be willing to take your picture in front of the sunset.

Excellent food. Incredible view of the sunset. Attentive service from our waiter, Joey and his busser/assistant. We couldn't ask for more. One of us went with the prix fixe and the other had a half order of the salmon in order to save room for the flaming pina colada creme brulee which was incredible.

We stayed next door at the Marriott Ocean Club and had dinner here twice! Sushi was fantastic! Try the Honolulu roll. For a side .... Regardless of what you order, the forbidden rice is a must! The Mahi Mahi grilled dish is wonderful. The views from the patio, dinner settings, are wonderful and have a view of the sunset. The only disappointment was the desert - do not recommend the s'mores. Great cocktails and wine list!

Excellent service and great menu. We enjoyed the dining experience. The Asian influence was done very well and has the capacity to cater to Asian and mainland customers. Recommend anyone staying in the area to experience Japengo. My wife and I truly enjoyed the table overlooking the ocean during sunset as well as the finely prepared appetizers of sushi and the dinner of Ahi tuna. The staff was helpful and ever present, but never intrusive. When in Maui, enjoy a romantic dinner at sunset with a bottle of Saki. You will have an experience you will never forget.

We had an amazing dinner! Made the reservation with Yelp, got a great table, and had a great meal. Ordered the Chef's Sampler sashimi platter, and it was delicious. Came with some great ahi, snapper, fried shrimp head, it was all good. The two rolls we had were great as well, with the freshest fish I've ever had. I live in Michigan and we never get fresh Ahi, and certainly not for this price. While the meal was a bit pricey, it was worth every penny. I've paid far more for far less superior food, in a far less enjoyable atmosphere.

Food was decent but pricey. Pad thai is good. Crab cake portion was small(only 2) and very average. Desert we had the shortcake which was just okay. There are better places to eat on the island.

Bottom line: The food/service is not worth the price. My wife and I had a hankering for sushi during our trip and we "settled" with Japengo due to the lack of available sushi options. I was skeptical going into it after reading reviews etc. This morning I woke up, looked at the receipt, ate a piece of leftovers and realized it was bad choice.

The service was really bad. We could overhear the waiters complaining about having too many tables and other supposedly bad customers. The waiter did not take our drinks for at least 15 minutes, which was way too long to sit there. The table that we got was right by the kitchen. It was busy, and the waiter was nice enough to take a couple drinks off the bill, but it still detracted from the whole experience.

I really struggled with what to rate this place because my husband and I had two very different dining experiences there. We had dinner there our first night in Maui and it was early enough that we got a table with a gorgeous view. This place is on the same level as the lobby and sort of perched on a little cliff overlooking the pool area with great views of the ocean. There are high top tables and lounge furniture on the outdoor patio but the dining room offers a more upscale and intimate feel. Even sitting in the dining area, we still had the same view because of the indoor/outdoor setup; the few exterior walls are all made of glass. We had been given a coupon when we checked in which entitled us to a free bottle of champagne (due to it being our 10 year wedding anniversary) so we started with that and some calamari. This appetizer was fantastic... lightly breaded with panko and it came on a bed of noodle and seaweed salad in a citrus vinaigrette. A very different presentation but sooooo tasty. Our server had recommended this and he was right on. He was a great guy and really made us feel comfortable and welcome on our first night on the island. He was very friendly but still deferential and attentive. For my entrée, I got the Honolulu roll. Their sushi rolls are pretty large here so I was satisfied and enjoyed my meal very much but I did also snag a few bites off my husband's plate. He got the New York Strip with King Crab legs and both components of the dish were amazing. The steak was perfectly cooked and came drizzled with a Asian inspired steak sauce. The crab legs came split down the middle (so no need for messy cracking at the table) and were brushed with a creamy butter sauce that is making my mouth water right now just thinking about it. Again, the crab meat was perfectly cooked. A truly phenomenal meal and we finished it off with a Hawaiian Creme Brulee served in a coconut shell. How awesome is that? Flash forward to the end of our trip when we visited Japengo for dinner once again. This time there were no open tables in the main dining area so we were seated at a table in the "sushi lounge" area in the back. This location is the only part of the restaurant without an ocean view which would have been OK except that was also next to the kitchen. It was very hot and loud. That plus the fact that our server literally only visited our table to take our order, give us our food, and to drop off the check gave us the feeling that we had been shoved in the corner and forgotten. On that night I talked by hubby into ordering a bunch of sushi to share which turned out to be a big mistake. The nigiri was decent but each order only came with two pieces (for like $10 each!). But the rolls we got were pretty bad. I think the problem was the nori they used. It had a very strong, bitter flavor to it. I don't know if it was spoiled or what. I didn't notice that bad taste in the Honolulu roll from our previous visit... but maybe that one had a different type of nori or rice paper instead of seaweed... I don't know. The whole dinner was a huge let down since we spent over a hundred dollars and did not enjoy our food or experience at all. On the days between the incredible dinner and the awful dinner, we did visit the outdoor patio a couple times. The cocktails are very good but expensive. They do have a happy hour from 5 to 6:30 but still. The bartenders are all friendly and it is a relaxed casual vibe outside at the bar and bar patio. We also sampled some other appetizers and they were pretty good. So, overall I would recommend this place for a romantic fine dining experience if you are prepared to spend some money, or some happy hour or late night drinks and apps (again, be prepared to spend some money). Just stay away from the sushi.

I think it's impossible to get good total value on any meal at any Maui hotel restaurant. (By total value, I mean the combined quality of the food, service and experience.) I had no illusions that the cost of the meal would be fairly priced, but I figured the service might make up for it. Nope, instead we had a barely-there waiter to go along with our very good sushi. The waiter really couldn't take the time to come over and be friendly? I don't want to be your BFF, I just want some attention. Another place where the busser had to step in and make up for our weak sauce waiter. The fresh wasabi was tasty, the fish was very fresh and the $20 specialty rolls come as 8 large pieces, so at the very least you won't leave hungry.

The atmosphere is awesome. The food is tasty, the people are cool. We had sushi, grilled tuna, and filet mignon and shrimp. All were really good. Give it a try and remember you're in Maui, it tastes that much better.

I have to say it was a mixed bag...I'll have to go back for more traditional Sushi. To start, the manilla clams were awesome really nice broth, some fresh peppers for a kick and a little bit of lemon grass...no complaints. I found the poke roll eh...not super flavorful. The spider roll was good, the crab part, however as Mitzi D. commented too much rice. Takes away from the filling. The spicy Tuna roll was okay..again not super flavorful or spicy. The more traditional sushi looked really good, however will have to try on the next visit. Again, the clams were really good and the service was perfect..friendly helpful but not overbearing. I'll be back to try some ahi, hamachi etc.

Definitely one of the Top 5 best restaurants on Maui! I usually stick to the appetizers and sushi since they are all amazing and the sushi rolls are so huge I never have room for an entree. My favorite, never miss items on their menu are the beef carpaccio, crispy ahi poke, hamachi & watermelon, blackened ahi & swat roll.

While in Maui, I stopped by Japengo as I wanted to give sushi in Hawaii a try. It was not too busy and we waited for a good 30 mins at the bar. The bartender was pleasant and suggested some delicious drinks. The sashimi was fresh and melted softly in your mouth. Japengo is pricey, all that I had was worth it.

Decent veggie sushi (rice was a bit soggy) & delicious ocean seaweed salad. The view is stellar & the chef was very accommodating with the kids' nut allergies.

A five star is rare for me, but,I have to say our night here was tremendous. We were sat at a great table and we were recommended many great specialty items. The korean pancakes are fantastic and the creamy sake kept us all in a good mood.. We all had great meals, drinks, and desserts. The server Joey was more than gracious and his sidekick Dave was right there for our needs. The ambiance can not be beat ,and being our last night I think we saved the best for last!

Ate here again. Got here at 9:10pm and was told they close at 9:30. Who has ever heard of closing a restaurant that early at a major resort? We just wanted appetizers so thought we would be quick. Waitress didn't come over and table wasn't clean. She basically ignored us hoping we wouldn't order and leave. The other waitress came by and was very helpful and took our order. The sushi we had was awesome and our original waiter never came back which was fine with us.

PHENOMINAL!!! This restaurant is sitting on top of a waterfall in the Grand Hyatt in Maui, while overlooking the waterfall you're also staring into the gorgeous ocean, pool, mountains and palm trees of Maui. Another spot in Paradise. My husband and I really enjoyed ourselves here. This was one of the best nights (of our lives) we had in Maui. We ordered some of the best sushi and oysters, while drink a large bottle of Saki. Our taste buds were dancing!

I came to this place with extremely high expectations after reading the reviews here on Yelp. But it was not as good as I thought it would be. This place is very pricey but we had the advantage of going with a well known local so were given a discount wich was great! But I would not go back if we had to pay full price. As it was not all its cracked up to be at most the sushi was mediocre.

We loved this place so much that we went here 3 nights in 10 days. We absolutely loved the sushi here. The service was outstanding. The view at sunset is unbelievable. We highly recommend this place. They also have a happy hour everyday from 5 to 6:30 that is perfect for pre-dinner drinks.

The only thing good about Japengo is the ambiance. Food: Blah. Salad not good; sushi not good; service awful. Go to KAI at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua. FABULOUS

Great service and amazing....so tasty. Food just melt in our mouth. It was one of the best meal we had. Wish we can go back soon. Portions are big, we thought it was going to be small. Our waitress helped us how to order and when to stop. They go through a long training to really understand food. Great cocktails as well. You need to stop by and enjoy their amazing food. We will be coming back

Came here with some friends for sushi. We are all sushi snobs (being from the Bay Area) and we all agreed it was very very good. We tried about 5 different rolls (came with an appetite) and we were not disappointed. Only negative was in one of the rolls the crab was a little dry and didn't have much taste. Service overall was okay, fast refills especially on water. Our main waitress was a little slow taking our order and we told her after we finished our initial 3 rolls we would probably order more. We had to was 20 minutes with our plates cleared away before she came and asked if we wanted more or wanted the check. I almost gave up haha. Good ambiance, has a laid back but romantic feel. The views of the ocean and sunset can be fantastic if you get the right tables. When we walked I'm there was live music performance in the bar patio area. Would go again for sure, and is recommended

By far my favorite restaurant on this property! I had sushi here with my family and friends when we were in town and we had some good eats for sure. We all had the Melville pinot noir to start, and some calamari. The calamari was yummy! Then we shared a bunch of rolls. Well, grandma had the chicken bc she's never quite trusted sushi. But we had everything from spicy tuna to various nigiri (who knew flounder was so good??) and a couple of other rolls they had on special (bless you for adding the jalapenos for me!) We also loved the ahi tuna and the oysters. Yummy! Definitely a must try on the island!

Ordered fried rice, asparagus, mango salad, miso soup and 2 rolls. Overall, food was ok compared to price. Miso soup not very good, fried rice and salad was good. The rolls were overpriced. Service was good but not the best. Ambiance was good for the evening.

Absolutely amazing sushi here. Better have the Rainbow Roll and Yellow Tail Niguri Dushi was probably the best I've ever had !! Nice ambience too, it's an outdoor patio Resturant that over looks Kaanapali Beach with tiki torches burning and a shady tropical tree arbour. Good service and great food. You're gonna break out the some bucks for this place thou $$$$ but amazing sushi is worth it !

We recently went to Japengo for dinner and had a wonderful experience! Bobby, our waiter, was friendly and attentive. The view was Amazing and the food was exceptional! We enjoyed Duck Potstickers that were cooked perfectly, Thai Chili King Crab Legs with Fried Rice and a Steak and King Crab combo that was divine. Dinner was topped off by a dessert of S'mores that we made at our table...so fun and yummy! I highly recommend Japengo!

The views & ambiance are the very first things you notice as you are seated - gorgeous views from their terrance. Because of this, I HIGHLY recommend outside seating - especially for sunset! I also love their wonderful hand muddled cocktails and fabulous fresh food. Their Japengo Mojito and Champagne Sangria are wonderful. The Lychee martini is intoxicatingly delicious as well. We go here pretty frequently and often bring our friends from out of town or even a client dinner. Its quiet, beautiful and the service is usually outstanding (only once was I unhappy with our service & I have been several times). We have tried several of their dishes - the duck meatballs, the thai inspired (curry dusted) calamari, the Vietnamese pork chop, their filet, many sushi rolls/hand rolls (the Honolulu roll is bomb) and if you are visiting, you need to try their malasadas! Their food is fresh, flavorful and presented beautifully! I will continue to frequent Japengo and recommend them to my friends and guests on the island.

We were staying next door at the Marriott and yelp showed this place a few feet away for sushi. We walked over in 2 minutes. The atmosphere is modern and hip. We sat at the sushi bar and split a bunch of stuff. First roll was a "Big Roll". It definitely was big and loaded up with goodness. Salmon, tuna and avocado rolled over a shrimp tempura roll. Second roll was a "50/50". This was like a jacked up Cali roll with salmon on top mixed with thin lemon slices and ponzu sauce. This roll was amazing to me. I think I declared it my favorite maki roll ever. They use real chunky crab meat in place of crabstick. The addition of the lemon was memorable. We got some other items which I don't recall but all was fantastic. The sushi chef was super nice and entertaining. Prices per roll could go up to $20 each but they are substantial and worth every dollar.

There are some fantastic things about this place so I hate to give it 3 stars, but looking at everything, I have to. First off, the crab entree is simply phenomenal - that entree alone makes it worth going to (and coming back to) Japengo - it is a full king crab that has been properly cooked/prepared so that the meat is simple to remove. It is cooked with a delicious sauce that makes the dish heavenly. I can't overstate how great this main dish was. We also enjoyed the Pad Thai and Chow Fun entrees, but they were "good" rather than spectacular like the crab. Why the 3 stars? Service had a lot to do with it. Our waitress (white woman with tattoos) simply wasn't attentive to us and made mistakes. We ordered the calamari and goyoza appetizers (I really liked both) but she informed us that they were sent to the wrong table 30 minutes into the meal - so we ate our entrees first, then got our appetizers. Also, the bar staff was the worst in our time on Maui - they simply didn't know how to make basic drinks. The place has a very nice view and seating as well. Overall I'd like to give it a 5, but it really has some improving to do with the staff/service that takes away from the potential this place has.

Really great sushi. Rolls are maybe a little heavy but they are good. Had the mahmay, tootsie and 50/50. They use real crab. Very nice sake list. Duck potstickers very yummy. Sweet potato cheesecake also yummy! Once again - great view, great staff. Continue to be amazed at overall restaurant quality in this hyatt. This was one of the best meals of the trip. Awesome view from the patio area of this place.

Nice view average food which is a crime for the crazy price you pay. $170 for a family of five with just a few glasses of wine and some sashimi. Absolutely nothing edible was par for the price. Gets you thinking on the value that a standalone restaurant brings. Better going to Roys in Kahana. Killer view and nice modern decor, though.

Keester is still hurting from the rape we encountered. I read all the reviews, I know good food and proper service and as much as my gut told me-don't eat at a big chain hotel- I did. I dropped over 400 bucks on 4 people and the bottom line is I could prepare a better meal with 100.00 and 20 minutes and two rows of shopping at Trader Joes. Not kidding.

We ate here as a last minute choice and love sushi coming from Vancouver. I realize prices are higher here in Hawaii but the $60 sashimi platter was awesome! Good value and great selection including a lot of local fish (salmon not being one..) we had some nigiri including fantastic hotate (scallop) and amaebi (raw shrimp). Everything was great and the service exceptional. I would highly recommend their sushi, can't vouch for the other menu items. My mojito rocked however... It's only 4 stars compared to Vancouver sushi..probably 4 1/2 anywhere else.

We had dinner at Japengo the first night we arrived at the Hyatt resort. I ordered a salad and found that a good portion of it was not fresh, a couple of small pieces were actually rotten. When I pointed this out to our server, she instantly got defensive, saying that it's mixed vegetables and some are dark colored. When I showed her how sloppy and crumbled those dark colored pieces are and pointed at the rotten ones, she just said that I can change it if I don't like it. Of course I don't like it, who would like a salad with rotten lettuce?! What makes me really upset in this incident is the lack of basic professionalism. It's ok that you served something sub-quality, but I expected a simple apology, not an insult to my ability to tell apart fresh and sloppy salad. Other items my family ordered were ok but nothing special, the grilled mahi mahi doesn't taste bad but was on the over-cooked side, not worthing its price tag. We certainly won't return.

Probably the closest thing to a disappointment in Maui. Not terrible, but nothing was great, and it's a fairly pricy meal, so you expect it to be pretty good. The service wasn't bad, though, and they have cute Japanese bottled sodas if that's your thing. I'd recommend going somewhere locals eat if you're hungry for Japanese, or eating at Umalu if you're just looking for something at the resort itself.

Pretty solid menu with good variety. Portions are definitely large, but it helps with the value for your $$. Great ambiance. Service was decent - not great. Highly recommend the grilled mahi mahi with coconut salad and jasmine rice.

Delicious rolls and they are huge! We ordered 2 of them for 2 of us and we took some home for leftovers (surprisingly they were just as good the next day too). Ambiance was great and service was wonderful. We stayed next door so it was a fantastic stroll home. Loved it.

The food was amazing and delicious!! Especially the Honolulu roll and curry dusted calamari... Sashimi was super fresh and melt in your mouth good. Bobby was the best waiter I've ever had...super attentive and hilariously entertaining, and the ambiance and views were perfect... It's getting 5 stars because there wasn't a single thing to complain about! A must!!

I was a bit disappointed by this experience. The view was incredible--I'd recommend a patio view at sunset--but the food was just okay. I eat better sushi all the time in Denver. The one impressive item was the Honolulu roll. Otherwise, I'd skip it.

Yummm - good sushi, but nothing I haven't had before. Location was great and really convenient for me since I was staying at the Hyatt. Outdoor area is nice - soft, live music playing while you dine. The waitress messed up on our order, but other than that, overall good dining experience.

Great atmosphere, beautiful views! We made a reservation on open table (seems like the way to go) ... They offer happy hour in the lounge only so get there early an take advantage before your seated. The prices are high but you get a lot for your money! 3 rolls is A LOT!

This is a hard one. I'd really like to 4 star it but I have to be brutally honest. The decor is beautiful. We stayed at the Hyatt so obviously the fact that one of the newer hot spots was where we were meant we were ecstatic we didn't have to travel. I ordered maguro sashimi to begin and my friend ordered a roll. Both excellent considering we spent almost $20 on each. We both ordered the duck entree. Here's when skid marks happen. It was served and it looked absolutely beautiful although I'm used to duck being served medium-rare, I should have known as I was concerned with its odd color the second it was placed in front of me... I took my first bite, second bite and third bite and could not fathom why it was tasteless. The sweet sauce off to the side of it didn't help much. The vegetables it was served with were also tasteless but cooked in an oil so they LOOKED like they should have been tasty. After about ten bites, I finally told the server. I never do this and was quite mortified. He was very kind and we figured out that I didn't like the dish b/c it was cooked medium well --- I just have never seen/heard/eaten cooked duck like that and didn't want to wait around for the chef to re-do it medium rare if that ain't his thing with his art. Longer story short, I chose another sashimi and was satisfied. We ordered the pofiteroles for desert; they were served with ice cream in the middle and salty macadamia crumbs up top. Extremely average, nothing inventive here. All in all, if I were to come here again, I'd just order sushi. I think that is what this place is being known for and for good reason.

Dont pay attention to reviewers complaining about prices... its a chic sushi lounge at the Hyatt overlooking ka'annapali beach, you want cheap? The view outside is exquisite and the sushi is perfect quality. I put my order in the hands of Billy, a skilled and friendly sushi chef. He placed me straight in heaven with 7 courses of nigiri. I'm salivating just thinking about this meal. Great cocktails, great atmosphere, great sushi, impressive service. Definitely 5-stars.

We wanted sushi and - surprisingly - there aren't a ton of options near where we're staying. Japengo just opened, but service was not bad for a restaurant a week old. We got a great seat after reserving from OpenTable, but it started to rain so we had to move right after we finished our appetizer. Still, location is thumbs up. The cocktails were well mixed, though mine coulda used a couple more shakes with the ice. Kudos to the bartender overall. We got the Seoul Cake appetizer and it was quite good. A sizable Korean kimchi seafood pancake that was close enough for this Korean boy. We then opted for sushi for dinner. First the pros: the rolls were HUGE. The pieces of tamago: also HUGE. The cons: sushi was just okay. Now, this is somewhat dependent upon your point of reference. But for us Seattleites who are used to Nishino and Shiro's, it did not hold up to those two places. Basically, there was too much Krab in the rolls. The dragon roll had Krab instead of shrimp tempura (huh?). The "spicy tuna roll" left out the first word. But it wasn't awful. Just not great. Also, with 2 cocktails, our bill came to $115 before tip. For that kind of cash, I expect.... well, Nishino or Shiro's. But it's the islands and it's a hotel restaurant, so you can expect about a 30% markup from comparable places on the mainland, I guess.

First of all, please look past the fact that it is in the Hyatt. I know hotel restaurants can be overpriced and mediocre, but Japengo FAR exceeded our expectations. We are from San Francisco where there's excellent sushi aplenty, so this was a major treat. This is a sushi restaurant, so if you get the duck, that's your fault. I'd also like to note that we ate at Sansei a few nights earlier and Japengo blows Sansei out of the water. Food & atmosphere combined. We had the Abalone appetizer ($18), the $60 sashimi platter, and the 50/50 roll ($20). The sashimi was incredible. Spot on for our expectations of being in the middle of the ocean where you should have the finest sushi. Amazing, melt in your mouth selection from the chef. Large pieces and fresh as can be! Martinis were very tasty ($11 each). The 50/50 roll was one of the best we have had ever. The waiter informed us that it takes 2 months to make the ponzu sauce they put on it. It was fantastic and a big roll at that! Dessert was out of this world ($10). The coconut creme brulee in the edible chocolate shell was awesome. We spent the same amount at Sansei that we did at Japengo. We won't go back to Sansei, but we ate at Japengo twice during our 5 day trip and would definitely go back. Beautiful setting and a very chic experience. It's like a little slice of city on an incredible island.

Japengo is a definite GO! My husband and I were staying at the Westin and did a yelp search on nearby sushi. Japengo was the only place on the Kaanapali beach strip, so despite the 3.5 stars we decided to go. The server came up and before anything told us that the sunset was beautiful and asked if we'd like him to take our picture. Camera crazy that I am, I was delighted - and the pictures he took were some of the best from our whole trip! We ordered the ahi roll and various sushi items. ALL of it was delicious. I'm a regular sushi eater back in LA and this place did not disappoint. Super yummy, beautiful view - the best dinner of our trip hands down.

Ok where do I start. This place apparently has a bunch of midwestern non foodies reviewing it because more than one star is too much. No joke. The worst seasoned food (lack of) and it was cold. I also found a coarse dark hair in my "forbidden rice", which is maybe why they called it forbidden? I don't complain about hair, unless its like tangled around my food, but still....gross. It was beyond lackluster. I had to ask for lemon to add flavor to my mahi mahi. that didn't help. My girlfriend ordered a California roll (yes, I know...boring) but none the less its a sushi restaurant so it should be spectacular right? Wrong again. It was the most mayonnaisey and pasty thing Ive ever tried. Miso soup was extremely fishy tasting. Totally dissapointed. Spent $70 dollars on a meal that maybe deserved a $15 dollar price tag on it at that. Also, the Grotto Bar is directly underneath the restaurant so its like sitting in a frat house listening to guys yell at the sports on tv. Never again. Sorry.

This is a beautiful spot for a restaurant, and only in Hawaii is eating al fresco ever worth it. The hotel grounds are so freaking gorgeous, even if you couldn't see the island, ocean, and Ka'anapali Beach views, this would still be a beautiful place and restaurant with breath-taking views. The sushi was delicious too. We enjoyed all the rolls we had. The ambiance is wonderful here, and the server we had was very attentive and caring. He had some great recommendations. They had some nice drinks, too, so that was really delicious. West Maui, in general, is a pretty expensive place to eat, and this place is no exception. That's the only warning. We look forward to coming back here, though! So much fun and deliciousness to be had!

We stayed on property and decided last minute to grab a bite to eat. I had steak and my wife had some seafood concoction. Our meals were excellent and the view was amazing. Relatively quiet and tables have some space around you so you don't feel as though you are part of everyone's conversations. Our server was nice BUT really wasn't that attentive. I tend to drink a lot of water and soda and I had to ask for refills. I could overlook the service though as it was the best meal we had in Maui!

I was very pleased with the sushi bar here. The sushi chefs were very friendly and outgoing. The sushi itself was excellent although a little pricey but worth the price tag (you get what you pay for people). I ordered some tuna sashimi and blackened Ahi Roll and both were mouth watering good. I recommend this place for the sushi bar and can't wait to eat there again.

Ate here twice during a stay at the hotel. Nice decor for a resort-based store. However, blasting cheesy music over the entire restaurant was not expected nor liked. Stay with the live stuff at the bar or play some vintage Hawaiian stuff instead guys. On to the food, specifically sushi. So what that I'm from CA? Sushi in the beach cities of LA isn't the greatest anyway! That's not to say I was blown-away by the fish here though. But, the freshness and the portion size is commensurate with price. Take for example, Uni. $8/order anywhere in Los Angeles, $16 here. In LA, the Uni portion is generally smaller than the rice portion unless you booze the guy making it. Uni here is huge and you could say it is double the size of perhaps the smallest you'd find in your town. Unagi, huge, huge huge. Ikura, super-fresh and also large-sized portion. Anybody bitching about price must be from the island. You're on vacation, blow it. Wait staff that I had both times were not "fitting" for a Japanese store. If you don't know what Asahi Super Dry is, get the hell out. Also, when I ask for vegetable tempura, you say yes sir, how many. Not, gee, we don't have the vegetables. GET SOME! Overall, great potential here but missing on some high points as Japanese restaurant. Go for the view. KILLER stuff at sunset.

I loved Japengo the moment I arrived at the door. The decor was esthetically pleasing - modern, earthy palettes with an Asian twist, outdoor fireplaces and views to kill. I have been to the Hyatt many times....but even now I cannot remember what stood here before the newly renovated Japengo was born...I don't care :) Dining with my family...you would think we hadn't eaten in quite some time. But never confuse blissful gluttony for hunger....my family loves to dine! Having lived on Maui for so long, it's not unlikely that upon returning for a short visit, you would happen upon friendly familiar faces....so we had the chance to "talk story" (as we say in the Islands) with some old friends. The meal was just getting better by the moment. People - this fish was fresh; we almost joked that it was still moving! Can I just tell you that I LOVE it when we can go into a fine establishment with surf shorts and rubbah slippahs and you are never judged....ahh love to be home. I truly appreciate hospitable, humble and friendly service so this was just a real treat on my last evening with my family. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Service very good. Food was delicious. Cool and breezy outside.Took one star off for price. $8 for an ear of corn ...really? This place is very pricey for the level of items on the menu, if you don't feel like driving back out for dinner it is very convenient. Plus ask for kamaaina discount. Every little bit helps!

What a great experience! First, they have the most amazing dishes. But they also offer the option of ordering HALF portions for HALF the price so that you can try more things! That's service!! The normal portions are very, very adequate, so half portions are perfect for lighter eaters. Ask for Joey, one of the most knowledgable and friendly servers I have ever come across. If you're a Hawaiian resident, you get the local 15% discount! The hamachi with watermelon was unforgettable and the cleverest thing ever. Ribeye was perfect, the roll was wonderful, and dessert looked incredible! Didn't have any because we were just too full, but will definitely be trying the pie very very soon. Mahalo, Joey! This dining experience has defined our stay at the Hyatt.

Loved it! Yes, it's pricey, but everything in Maui's expensive! The quality, ambiance and service was excellent. We made a reservation but showed up an hour before and the friendly host staff was able to accommodate us. The restaurant and bar are very cool- tv's near the bar, lots of glass and a good over all vibe. We took the recommendation of others and ordered the "forbidden black rice" it was great. the sushi was fresh and the rolls creative and tasty. I especially liked a drink i ordered, a akai berry/saki martini kind of thing. it was refreshing and not too sweet. I will definitely go back next year. Jun our waiter was super pleasant too!

This is my husband Peter's account to be upfront right away, I'm Amy. We just returned to our condo on Ka'anapali Beach, Maui from having dinner at Japengo. It was our second time this week going to the restaurant. The other night we had a decent dinner. Great sushi (we love sushi, the real stuff not a New England California roll!). So dinner the other night was great. Fantastic service (Bobby!) and good food. The rolls are a bit too much. But everything was so fresh it didn't matter. (also, it's a hotel...so the price is high....but so isn't everything worth it anywhere!!!) Today our plan was to eat at a sushi place up the road which had been recommended; we were planning to go there until we decided we didn't want to drive and the sushi a few nights before was really good. Now granted, we're from Boston. But we have a really great sushi restaurant we go to (see Pete's other reviews for Imari!). So we're not totally illiterate on what good sushi is. Tonight we decided to eat at the sushi bar at Japengo! It is by far the ONLY place to eat at the restaurant (no offense Bobby!). We had a blast. First and most importantly, the fish was fantastic. (We ate sushi- salmon, yellow tail, abalone, eel, local tuna, local pink snapper). Above and beyond the excellent quality food was the service. Our waitress was outstanding, pouring wine when we didn't even know we needed refills. And Brian, Normand, Scott and all the other guys I know I'm forgetting were amazing. They answered our tedious questions about local fish and knives and were equally informative as entertaining. We have been to several restaurants on our travels to Maui and each have been wonderful in their own way. BUT, if you LOVE sushi....please come to Japengo for the sushi bar. You will not be disappointed by the food or the service (only potential negatives are the rolls are too big - ask for less rice and they will accommodate)

I read all the reviews other people posted and was 50/50 if I should go. Our service was wonderful and the food was pretty good. Our server recommended some food that was really delicious. The view from the restaurant was the best we had all week.

This place is a lot more pricey than I am usually ever willing to pay, but after the first time going there, I still returned. It was so worth it. The food is amazing and the service is excellent. Everything we ordered was delicious. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was great. The first time we went, we had a table on the edge with a beautiful ocean view and watched the sunset. Both times were a perfect dinner. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Really good food! Loved the calamari and the sushi. Our favorite were the Honolulu roll and SWAT roll. Super flavorful. The cashew crusted chicken was delicious also. Great ambiance as well.

I read a bunch of reviews before going here, so I was a little nervous because many of the local reviews seemed pretty negative. We were staying at the hotel and I'd had great sushi there in the past few years before the remodeling. We made a reservation for a table for 2 at 8pm on Monday night. About half of the tables were full when we sat down. It took longer than usual for the waiter to great us and get our wine order, so I wasn't sensing a great start to the meal. However once he took our wine order he seemed to get his act together and we went smoothly from there. Having eaten a large lunch we just ordered 2 sushi rolls (having been warned they are large) and an order of fried rice. The waiter asked us how hungry we were and recommended getting a half order of fried rice, saying that he rarely sees people finish a whole order. Definitely redeeming for him.... and when the order came we were really glad that we took his suggestion. The Honolulu roll, as I'd seen in other entries, was great! i would definitely get it again. The california roll was fine... nothing spectactular but then again it's hard to wow anyone with a california roll. The half order of fried rice was very tasty, not too salty, and not too mushy. We didn't even finish the half order. The waiter was attentive once dropping off our food and getting our second order of wine. We had a table out on the patio (not under the awning) with tiki torches lit around it. It was VERY dark and we really didn't have much of a veiw. This didn't bother me, but if you are going for the view, I'd go earlier. All together it was a good experience there- not much bad, nothing really overly exciting. I would go back if I was staying at the hotel again and needed a consistant meal.

We eat at this restaurant while vacationing. Both the food and service were disappointing. We ordered at least $120 worth of food for 2 adults and a child but left it on the plates and left. I guess they need to explain the menu better. Everything we ordered ended up being fried. I would never think that fried calamari should have cinnamon in it. Too bad because it is a nice hotel.

  • Dawn G.

We ordered a shrimp and crab cake appetizer the was SUPER delicious!!! The problem, there were only 2 half dollar sized cakes FOR $20!!!! Ridiculous. The sushi was just ok. Way over priced.

This place is upscale and elegant with a nice wine list and good portions. Everyone seemed to like their selections.

We actually went back for the second and last night of our trip, and this time just stayed in the bar area, with a table on the edge for the beautiful view. We loved it, and wish we had tried it earlier in our week. The music, food, view were all excellent. The service was also very good, and the only reason I rated it very good versus excellent was the bar was packed and they were doing the very best in these circumstances. All definitely an excellent experience, and a place we will, upon return to Maui, be very early in our visit. .

  • Bryan K.

First time at Japengo we gave it a higher rating (5). Second time at Japengo good but the food did not meet the high bar set from our first visit. The online menu is outdated and so no Singaporean Chili Crab;) as advertised on the website. The happy hour drinks were very good and the Fried Rice dish is awesome. The Blackened Ahi Roll was amazing. The service and view are awesome, but the menu was average to slightly above average for the price. Because I have had an average and a "5' visit, I will try again when in Maui.

The best sushi ever!!! Expensive but worth it. Also a lovely setting for watching the sun set or if you wish to sit further back in the bar area the view over the pool and beach at the Hyatt is very nice. We went back and if we get to Maui again this will be a stop for us!

Service was great. Sherry from Pacifica ca is wonderful. Food wise is kind of hit and miss. Great deep fried fish dish and sushi was really fresh and good however surf and turf was "nothing" special. Crab rice was great but forbidden black rice was "ok". I guess for the amount of dollars being paid I was expecting more was the bottom line.

I am currently vacationing in Maui with my family and good family friends! With a party of 7 we took on Sheri (and her unique personalness) through an entire 3 course dinner. Amazingly throughout the entire night Sheri kept her shining personality vibrantly glowing, as well as staying on point with the service! I am pleased to say that during the whole night Sheri was a complete treat to us, acting so sweet and completely genuine, the best waitress any of us have ever had! She was an absolute pleasure and treated us like best friends! One of the best nights out we have had so far! THANK YOU SHERI!!!!!:). -The Carlson's and Goto's

Japengo had decent sushi, snacks and drinks but it truly is about the location with this place. My wife and I stayed at the Hyatt Regency resort and found ourselves gravitating to the patio at Japengo each evening to take in the sunset, live guitar music, and a few tropical cocktails in the twilight. Definitely "Maui priced" but friendly and responsive service, frequent cocktail offerings, solid food and the view made this place a welcome visit at the end of a day trekking around the island. Go for the drinks and the views, stay and snack on some solid asian fusion nosh while listening to island music.

Top notch sashimi. The hamachi was fantastic as was the tootsie roll and the blackened ahi roll. The big roll was decent but not worth $20. Pricey place but the scenery was awesome and the service was great. Stay away from the miso soup. It was very standard and definitely not worth $8. That was my only complaint.

I am a tough grader when it come to sushi and even tougher when it comes to finding value at pricey hotel restaurants. So I am happy to report that Japengo was simply outstanding in all respects. We have good sushi in California but the rolls here are a cut above. We enjoyed the Big roll and the SWAT roll - yes they are $20 each but they are also about 3x as big as your average sushi roll. Our server was fabulous - friendly, helpful, attentive but not overbearing - one of the best waiters I've had in a long long time. As others have noted you can't beat the view even at night. We walked from the Marriott timeshares, but Hyatt will validate parking. The only disappointment was the sliced ahi appetizer which was delicious but way too small. Great sake selection. And we were shocked when the bill arrived - it was actually less than expected, and much less than you would pay in SF. All in all I think it would be tough to go wrong here, and we will definitely be back.

Would you take bbq tips from someone not from TX, or pizza advice from someone not from NY? Nope. So a tip: when you read reviews at a tourist area, learn to judge the reviewers. Sushi reviews from CA are the ones you should focus on. I didn't do this, and we paid...literally. If you spent $9 on miso soup, it better be one hell of a miso right? Nope, you could go to any gas station and get miso in a cup and that's what this was. And that was pretty much the dinner...whack ass sushi with a nice view.

We still love our Sushi King in West LA, but for West Maui, this food is good. We ordered mainly nigiri sushi and two rolls. All of it was tasty, even if it a little over priced. Way better than Sansei in terms of food quality and ambiance. The sushi chefs have good team communication and our chef was very friendly and humorous. 90% dining near the sushi were Japanese. That's usually a good sign for authenticity. Our bill came out to $100 after one drink each, a selection of nigiri, and two rolls

The food is fantastic and the view is beyond amazing!! Sheri, was our waitress last year. When we walked in a YEAR later she remembered us and greeted us with a big welcome back. Sheri is a sweet, wonderful waitress. The one drawback is the sushi bar gets slow at night so order sushi right when you sit at the table. The restaurant and view are so beautiful that your don't mind the wait.

We had dinner there last night. The restaurant offers a variety of exotic dishes, however we were there for sushi and did not regret that. My wife had the Haha roll (Papaya, spicy tuna, cucumber) and the Eel-avocado roll, I ordered sashimi and a bowl of sushi rice. Rice was good, yet I think they use a single/universal sushi rice approach for all rolls, I expected it would be different for those two rolls as one was more on a sweet side and another in the spicy category; that been said, it was one of the best recipes of universal sushi rice in my experience: good texture, spiced and sweeten/soured perfectly. Rolls were prepared just right not too tight yet held perfectly allowing to enjoy rice, fillings and the composition. Selection and quality of fish in the sashimi was good (about a dozen of pieces or so, well-cut and presented) with salmon and shrimp earning exceptional marks and the rest -- very good. Overall very good experience with dry sake, magnificent view, professional stuff and perfect evening weather with outside sitting. Price of the dinner including drinks and tip -- $105 Place to come back again.

My husband and I were skeptical to eat here as typically, hotel restaurants are overpriced and only okay, but we were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious, our waitress was very helpful in helping us determine how much food to order, and the atmosphere is great! This isn't a cheap meal but it wasn't early as expensive as I thought it would be - it was worth the money.

I usually write reviews because I am so happy with experiences. However, I am compelled to write this review simply because the service at this place was just too atrocious! Atmosphere: fantastic. Indoor/outdoor seating and design is excellent. Very romantic, but also could work for groups. Just beware that it can get extremely windy & a lot of people like us decided to move inside. If there's no tables left inside - you have outside or the sushi bar whether you like it or not! After seating we quickly realized our server was incredibly slow - we understand the restaurant is new, but after 3 months of being open, it should not feel this understaffed. We moved to another table because it was too windy outside & thankfully had a much better server. We thought it could only get better from then on.....Not quite! WAITING TIME: 40 minutes for a bottle of Champagne. This is not acceptable! To not be told why until last minute is shocking. Apparently the manager had to run and get the bottle from somewhere....fine, but if that's the case why not warn me so I could have a cocktail in the mean time?! Also, beware the appetizers are massive - definitely sharing portions. Calamari with curry was gorgeous. The rest of our food was far too salty....you really don't need to crack sea salt all over beef carpaccio!! Leave it up to the customer, please. Then when our main course finally arrived, I realized it had been 1 hr 40 mins for it to turn up!! Wow, that's just crazy. We had a child with us too - that's a long time to wait. My Husband said his fish entree was fantastic, but it still came with noodles even though we asked for vegetables instead. Plus, the duck was actually beautifully cooked, but it was about 2 huge portions-worth of meat......definitely not French portions :-) We won't be going back, which is a shame as we had high hopes for this place.

Very good sushi--but a little pricey. Rolls are large, so go for the most expensive and just have two. Ahi, Wow, and Big Roll work.

Food was good but not outstanding and really pricey. Then again, it's in the Hyatt so you're basically paying for the location. Service was really slow. We had one dish then placed an order for additional sushi (3 items) and waited 15-20 mins for order to arrive. Surely there are better places to go for sushi.

3.5 stars. This is a really beautiful restaurant and we had an amazing table at the very end which looked out on to the ocean. I wish we had been there at sunset bc I am sure it would have been beautiful. We came here bc hubs loves sushi but I do not so I wanted to find a place that would cater to both of us and this was the perfect place. Service was really slow to start, we waited almost 20 minutes before getting in a drink order. Our waiter was very apologetic and from there made it up to us by being fabulous. I ordered the mahi mahi which was amazing. The reason I gave it 3.5 instead of 4 was bc hubs said the sushi was okay. He ordered the Honolulu and Big rolls. Portions are really big and unfortunately neither one of us had room for dessert. I think we would probably go back and give him a chance to try the sushi again as the rest of the meal was wonderful.

Japengo opened on December 23rd and we went (my wife and two kids) for a special Christmas Eve dinner. Knowing it had recently opened, I was expecting slow service and for once, a restaurant didn't let us down. Service was a bit sketchy (does it make sense to open a restaurant at the peak of the holiday season???), but even with that, it was an very nice dining experience. First off, we made the reservation from NYC about two weeks ago...so of course, when we arrived at the restaurant, the hostess couldn't find it. Either she did, or she made it look like she did, because we were ushered to a nice table. The restaurant is mostly outdoor (sheltered) on an outcropping above the pool. Later in the year, when sunset is at dinner time, this will be a spectacular place to dine. The decor is very nice...spare and Asian. Tables were well spread apart so we felt we weren't on top of each other. We had just sucked down a bottle of Pinot Grigio in the room...so we didn't feel a need to imbibe at dinner. The sake selection looked very nice as did the collection of beers (local and imported). The kids did have Ramamune Japanese sodas (pineapple). These are the sodas that have a marble sealing the bottle and the waiter had to use a special cap to dislodge the marble. Opening the bottles was better than drinking the sodas (I just checked the bill and they didn't charge us for the sodas!). We ordered a Japengo Salad to start, along with potstickers. My 12 year old son got Miso soup. Okay...here's where the growing pains kick in. It took 50 minutes from the minute we sat down to get our first bit of food. My nine year old daughter was so hungry she started whining like a bad outboard motor....to appease her, we let her have almost all of the dumplings. They were tasty....five kind of small ones though. They were duck, but couldn't really tell. There was a dipping sauce, but the hidden treasure was the mint sauce they were sitting on., The miso soup was standard...and the salad was fine...not too large, with phony crabmeat. At $13 it wasn't cheap...but it was standard. Potstickers were $16, a bit on the steep side (over $3 per dumpling). For entrees, my daughter had the mussels and clams appetizer, with some white rice. The rest of us decided to go the sushi route. We ordered maguro (tuna), sake (salmon) and unagi (freshwater eel) along with three rolls...a Blackened Ahi roll, a spicy tuna roll and an "L" roll (unagi and avocado). Each order of sushi comes with two pieces....and the rolls had at least 6-8 pieces. The rolls were huge....especially the Blackened Ahi. I have to give the sushi an A+....all of the fish were sublime and the rolls were really, really good. It was the perfect order for three people....we were full when done. The sushi pieces were substantial as well....very, very nice. Ironically, the best part of the meal was what we didn't expect....we got the jasmine rice and ate it with the sauce from the mussels. The sauce had tomatoes, lemon and tofu (besides the clams and mussels) and it was saffron flavored. With the rice it was absolutely delicious. I could see that as an entree on any day...plenty of food and outstanding. We passed on dessert....still on NY time so we couldn't handle any more...we could see a nice selection of desserts and they also had mochi ice cream (looked yummy). So...would I go back? Absolutely. As far as cost...it is pricey, but what do you expect for a high end asian fusion restaurant at a luxury resort in Hawaii? Entrees were in the $30-40 range (beef, fish). The sushi was market priced....sushi orders were about $9-10 each for two pieces. Rolls ranged from $9 for the spicy tuna roll to $14 for the "L" and Blackened Ahi rolls. Again, market priced. Dinner for four with no alcohol was $160...tip not included. Expect to pay twice that if you go the cooked entree route and booze. Service was friendly and accommodating....it was overall a very nice experience for a special dinner. It was fine for kids too. I have had much worse meals in hotel restaurants....this one looks to be a nice addition to the Maui dining scene....especially when it gets some time to establish itself.

New restaurant at the Hyatt, they have been opened for 4 months. The sushi is very good quality and they use real crab in their california rolls not the imitation krab from fish that a lot a places use to be cheap. The clam and mussel dish in sake and miso was over the top. Had the shrimp and mango salad, different but good. Overall very impressed with the service, food quality and the ambience, especially for a hotel restaurant, would go back again

LOVE this place. The sushi is amazing and we are manhattan food snobs!! We had the fried rice, yum!!! Then I had the ahi dinner with garlic fried rice. Everything here is amazing. The staff is so nice and the views are great. Go and enjoy. Pricey but we split the entree and fried rice and were full!

Service could be improved. We waited a long time for our drinks and even longer for our food and the place didn't evn look that busy. For sure expensive and honestly if you have never had sushi before you would think this place was a 5 but the sushi/rolls were just OK - nothing out of this world. I think I've had better sushi in LA.

What a wonderful surprise! And right at our hotel. This was our best meal on Maui this trip, even beating out Mama's Fish House (though admittedly much different). Fabulous atmosphere, great service, great menu, and wonderful food. Loved the California rolls. The location is spectacular, looking out over the upscale grounds, the Pacific in the (short) distance. A little pricey, but not unexpected going in.

great views nice menu, service horrible and food just ok. After hardly seeing the waiter we were served food that was cold. The restaurents repsonse was to take the cold food and heat it back up. Doesnt work with seafood. The only reason they get 2 stars is the great location. The sushi wasnt bad. Hard to recomend this restaurant with all the other choices. Roys in Kahana is always great

Am staying at the hotel and didn't feel like travelling for dinner. Sushi was oustanding! SWAT roll melts in your mouth. "Specialty" cocktails were small and expensive but good wine list. Service was very attentive and view was great. Very nice - great place to relax, enjoy the sunset and have good food!

While food in general was decent, the king crab entree was a total disappointment. There was no presentation, just a bowl of crab legs in some kind of blobby coating, stacked in the bowl. There was nothing else served with it. No starch, no vegetable, no garnish......nothing. Asked for the cod appetizer to be served as an entree size. Think it was the small piece of cod plopped on top of a large bed of rice. Waiter didn't follow requests for the sides even though he said that it was no problem. In general, a very poor culinary experience. Waiter more interested in schmoozing at another table. Previous experIences were more positive but won't return anytime soon even though we live here.

Great food and beautiful views but the atmosphere was ruined by excessive noise. The sashimi was the best I've ever had and the miso and sushi rolls were delicious (try the honalulu roll). Service was ok and the view was stunning. However the noise spoiled the evening. Simultaneously, there was a rock concert on our left and an outdoor movie playing on our right. Also there were plenty of families with children running around the restaurant grounds. Great food, just not the romantic evening I was planning.

Ultimately love this restaurant! I had the Tootsie Roll, which was the best sushi roll I've ever had ,even compared to Sanseis & I really love Sanseis! I also had the Singaporean crab legs which is really big and the shell is pre-cut so you don't spend an hour trying to open the crab legs! The sushi was $20 and the crab legs was $40. So it was pretty pricey but a tasty meal. Also got a spritzer and it tasted mostly like pineapple juice, so don't waste you money on that. Dined with lots of family so we all got to sample each other's entrees. The Korean pancakes were really good as well as the calamari (i still think mama's is better though). My sister had the ahi and it was good too. The rice also had a coconut sauce underneath and I found that tasty! For dessert, YOU MUST get the creme brulee---- it's one of the best one's I ever had, and I had my share of creme brulees!

Great sushi - perfect Maui sunsets at a great location....and the servers don't roll their eyes when you ask them to take a picture! Great selection of sushi rolls and sashimi (with unique local selections too) If you want a 5 Star sushi experience in Maui, then Japengo is THE place to go!

I must preface this review by saying that I avoid restaurants in the tourist hotels.......but my island sistahs rec this place for sushi. This island wahine has found a new sushi bar... YES!. We have tired of Sansei so we were pleased to find a quality sushi bar, albeit expensive sushi bar. Come on now.....most of Maui's restaurants are expensive and frequently over priced for the fare. This one was good enough to overlook the high prices. We shared the Tootsie Roll as a starter and it was so ono and huge. My spousal unit had the ahi dinner special and he said it was fab. I asked the waiter for a rec. and he suggested the seafood chow fun. It was delicious and a very generous portion. Service was a bit slow, but I could see that the waiter had way too many tables to offer better service. His rec. made up for that. Beside, It is a terrific view to keep you entertained, so relax and go with the island flow. This is a great piece of real estate to while away the dinner hour. BTW lichee martini was ONO too!

Great location at the Maui Hyatt. We tried this restaurant out the first night we got to the island. Nice option of sitting outside overlooking the water or in the dining room. They have an extensive menu and the sushi was pretty good. Not our favorite on the island (Sansie) but it was fresh and tasty. If your staying at the hyatt or close by check this place out. Even if you go for happy hour and get a few rolls. Service at happy hour on the patio is kind of slow if they are busy, so be patient.

First time in Maui and we stumbled on Japengo since we were staying at the Hyatt. We ordered 2 sushi rolls and cam you say melt in your mouth! Best sushi I have ever had! Will definitely go back before we leave.

Worst restaurant service ever!!! You expect more from the Hyatt and though the accomodations have been superb, this particular restaurant falls in to the typical mediocre category that is prevalent with most resort destinations. However, Japengos was far below the mediocre level. Dare I say BOTTOM OF THE BARREL!!! I have no idea how they got 4 stars but if you look closely at the negative reviews, the common theme is average food and terrible, horrid service. The latter I can certainly testify to. There were three couples that walked out cause the wait was soooo dreadfully long after being seated. The server neglected them and never brought over the initial order of drinks. We walked out as well due to a similar, frustrating wait time. The server brought us champagne glasses but never brought the champagne! 20 minutes of our lives wasted! Fortunately, I was able to salvage the night with my wife by taking her to a surperb meal at David Paul's on Front Street. Both venues were similarly priced, but with Japengos, you are paying extraordinary prices for frustratingly disappointing experience! That's like willingly giving your lunch money to a bully so that he can beat you up!!! STAY AWAY!

Lovely setting, mostly wonderful food. Ask for a view table - spectacular! Very expensive, but worth the splurge. The curry dusted calamari are terrific, the chow mein to die for. The crab and shrimp cakes were excellent. The downsides? The pork chop was OK but served on a strange "hash" that was dry and weird. The fried rice is over-rated. All in all, though, good food and impeccable service.

Overpriced. Guy seating interviews you like his watched too many cop shows and he should not be working in a service industry. You need a reservation. If you're offered a seat in the sushi bar so no as you get zero ocean view.

Great food! A little expensive, but fresh food. I had the seafood grill which had scallops, prawns, crab, mahi mahi all grilled with a great coconut curry sauce on the side. We also tried the calamari and the Korean pancake. Both were good and would order again. Portions are big. Starters could be shared by 2. Can't wait to go again.

Great food. Rainbow roll, shrimp tempura roll, and spicy tuna were all excellent. The ambience was lovely. Our server, although slow to take our order and deliver our food was very nice, apologetic, and knowledgeable.

My wife and I went to Japengo's our last night of our honeymoon and were so disappointed we went. We ordered 1 sushi roll and 2 other pieces of sushi. It took them over 45 minutes to deliver our meal. The waitress checked in with us once the entire 45 minutes and didn't seem pleased when I asked her if I should order dessert before the meal gets there. Service was terrible, food was terrible. I never complain about restaurants but it was so bad I had too.

Great ambiance. Very good sushi but slow service and a waiter who knew nothing about the sushi he was serving us. The abalone starter was dry and tasteless. Sashimi platter was excellent. Liked the profiteroles but nothing special. We have had better of all of the above in San Francisco!

I'm giving this place a two star rating instead of one solely because of the atmosphere. The restaurant is beautiful and in a nice location. I never review anything on yelp, but felt compelled to do a review of Japengo when I used yelp to go there based on other folks' reviews, only to discover the worst sushi restaurant I have ever been to. The fish was like nasty rubber, I actually had to spit a piece out in my napkin (which was horrifying). I could get better sushi at Ralphs. The drinks tasted like a hot syrupy (is that a word?) mess. Please, please please do not waste money on this restaurant.

We called in yesterday at 5pm and were able to get an ocean side table for 715. Upon arrival we were greeted politely and immediately seated at our table. Our waitress was very polite and helped us out with all my dietary needs (gluten intolerance). They even have a separate gluten free menu for those that have the same issue. We ordered sushi and rolls for dinner. They were some of the freshest and tastiest we have ever had. Very clean and professional restaurant who did a great job overall. The price was more expensive then when at home but based on the portion sizes and location it is reasonable. We would definitely come back.

I use to think all restaurants in hotels are over priced and not that great. Japengo is a great exception to that rule. We definitely over ordered because even the half potions were huge! If I had known how good this restaurant was I would've came here every night. We ordered - 1/2 order of the fried rice - 1/2 order of the mahi mahi with forbidden rice - 1/2 order of the ahi tuna on white jasmine rice - hamachi kama (this appetizer is really big!) - purple sweet potato tempura (this is their special side) it's called the japengo everything was delicious and reasonably priced for how much they give you! The fishes all came with rice, so we probably could have skipped on ordering the fried rice. If you're a platinum member, they also give you a free ice cream cake :) A+! mahalo hyatt!

I am normally very skeptical about Japanese restaurant in hotel, but Japengo is solid. We chose to sit outdoor, next to the bar area, they have got chairs with big cushion, very comfortable. It's facing the ocean with great view. We ordered spicy edamame, Raijin Roll, Fujin Roll and Rising Sun Roll. All the rolls are delicious, they came in good size and the fish are extremely fresh. It's difficult to pick what I like the most, they are all very different, but if you are salmon lover, then Rising Sun Roll will be an excellent choice. Raijin Roll is also delicious, but the shiso leave carries a very distinguish flavor, so if you are not very adventurous, it's probably not the roll for you. Fujin Roll is delicious, especially if you like Hamachi. The edamame came in spicy and normal one, we ordered spicy one, probably shouldn't have, because it's quite oily but the spicy taste didn't really go into the edamame. As for desert, we had Japengo Malasadas, it was a revised version on donuts with 3 different dipping source, the salt caramel dipping source was most delicious. Oh, one last thing, I love their Expresso Martini as well, if you like it on the sweet side, this is a must try!

Epic food and excellent services. The setting is amazing overlooking the ocean. This was a solid 5 star dinner and was my third time going here. I stayed at the Hyatt which made for a relaxing dinner since was on property. I had some and amazing salad and the ahi tuna was fabulous. Desert (pinnacle upside cake - flaming) was very good and the presentation flaming was fabulous as well. Cocktails were excellent as well. A+ wish I could go back tonight ...

Make sure to make a reservation! Went here for our last dinner in Maui and I loved it. We ordered the dragon roll, Fujin roll, moriawasa sashimi . All of it were delicious !! I always order dragon roll when I get sushi but this had a lot more flavor to it . The Fujin does contain raw fish which I'm not a fan of. But my boyfriend convinced me to try it and all I can say was : omg. After years of sushi this is the first one that I'm able to eat without wanting to gulp down a ton of water . My boyfriend ordered the sashimi and he loved it. Also the calamari yummyy A must try If you're in Maui! The view is great too since its outdoors . Loved it !

The quick and dirty if you don't want to read the review: Order: hoisin glazed ribs, kurobota pork chop, rib eye, ka'anaapali pie Don't order: duck meatballs The longer version: So generally I believe in supporting small local restaurants but I like to splurge on an expensive meal at least once on vacation. Japengo was probably my favorite meal my whole Maui trip. We made a last minute reservation an they were still able to accommodate a table with a view. I like that the menu has many half order options, so you can sample various starters and noodle/rice dishes. We ended up ordering the duck meatballs which was the only dish I didn't like mostly because of the consistency of the meatball was mushy and the inside of the meatball lacked flavor. The hoisin glazed pork ribs were finger lickin' good, I just wish they were meatier! So let me start off that the entrees are shareable especially if you are a light/medium eater. We ordered the Vietnamese kurobota pork chop and the rib eye. The pork chop was salty, yet sweet from the caramelized onions and seared to perfection. The bone in pork chop was extremely moist. The side of purple sweet potato/edamame/onion/mushroom/red pepper hash was tasty and HUGE in portion. My husband's ribeye steak came with a delicious mushroom gravy, zucchini and asparagus and a lobster/potato cake. Again both were so large in portion they can be shared especially if you are ordering other items. The price tag for the entrees was about $40-45, which is great considering the amount of food and quality. I was telling my husband we usually just get the steak without any sides in Vegas for that price. And the finale and showstopper was the Ka'anaapali pie! OMG amazing with brownie crust, frozen bananas, macadamia nut ice cream, chocolate fudge layer with a drizzle of caramel. Essentially a great ice cream cake! Every bite was like heaven! This will be our go too fancy dinner spot in Maui from now on.

I made the mistake of ordering meat maybe their seafood dishes are good. Their rib appetizer was bad. The hamachi appetizer with lychee balls was awesome. I got the pork chop entree which j is around $43? For that price it wasn't great. The sides to the dish are a mish mash of edamame, purple potatoes and a few other things. Had no flavor. I get that pork is rich tasting and you don't want the side to be similar but there was zero taste. We got the kalapani cake for dessert. That was pretty good. Kinda like a fancy carvel ice cream cake. Considering how expensive this place is, mediocre at best. Definitely a nice location with great view for dinner though.

The happy hour was pretty good. Decent selection. We had the fried rice, app platter, and clams. The good was good and the prices were even better. The view is phenomenal just try and go a little early because this place does get a little busy.

Japengo was good...but not awesome. Food was good, better than average, but nothing we'd absolutely have to go back for. The Seafood Pho was $43...the absolute most expensive pho we've ever had. Came with only half a lobster tail, 2 big scallops, and 2 shrimps. In comparison, the crab ramen is half the price and much tastier (though to be fair, with much less seafood). The sushi was good....but again, nothing special. The malasadas came with a really tasty salted caramel sauce. Short of going to Oahu for Leonard's, they were good. Soft, fresh, warm. We could've passed on the pineapple cake. The service was excellent. Bobby was friendly and attentive. We ate outdoors overlooking the ocean with a sunset view. Ambiance was very nice.

I give the view and ambiance 3 stars. I started with young coconut water. Don't do it. It's out of a can. I ordered the veggie roll, asked for no daikon radish. My roll had radish in it. Meh flavor, minus one star for the radish. 1 star sushi. The corn with sea salt and lavender butter was good, not epic, good. 2 stars. You want 5 star corn? No prob, head over to Shark Pitt Maui, and Kavi will hook you up with epic corn dressed in wasabi aioli, seaweed, and other secret ingredients. They do the corn justice. For dessert I had the molten lava cake with passion, orange, guava gelato. The cake, 4 stars. The gelato doesn't really vibe with the flavors of the chocolate cake tho. It just kinda hangs out there, on the side, kinda stalkerish. Would I go back? Nah, I'd hit up the Fish Market or Lahainaluna Cafe for din instead. That's what's up.

Seafood ramen was top notch. Chefs selection of sushi was heaven. The curry calamari was incredible. The clam app was the best of everything!

For 2 ppl: Blackened ahi roll-awesome (husband thought crab salad inside was too creamy/mayo-y) 1/2 order Manila clams-delicious 1/2 order ribs-awesome 5 spice flavor, but ribs could've been meatier and richer. Would choose other app next time. Sake (salmon) sashimi - couldn't be better. Beautiful and buttery Hawaiian tuna sashimi-good Ka'anapali pie-good, but not great. Annoyed with myself for eating it anyway; a zillion calories that would have been better used on cocktails! Beautiful ambience. Very nice food. However, over-hyped. The awards and reviews lead you to believe it will be the best meal of your life. Very enjoyable, but not in my Top 20 meals...if we went again it would be for reliably fresh sushi and beautiful setting, overlooking the ocean.

Absolutely delicious. The service was great. Attendant and friendly. Knowledgable and friendly. The food was amazing. For dinner we had the Kung poa duck meatballs for an appetizer. So good. Ahi burger, and ahi sushi roll. I also had the sake flight which was a sake sampler of Ruby, Diamond, and Pearl. For dessert we had the Upcountry Shortcake. It was so delicious. Lavender, strawberries, deliciousness. The outside seating is so nice next to the ocean and they have live music every night. I highly recommend Japengo at the Hyatt in Maui. Just make a reservation or you probably won't get in!

Very delicious restaurant. It is pricy, but of course for food like this what do you expect? First we sat at the bar and had a couple drinks our bartender was helpful and helped me find the right beer I wanted to start off at. After our table was ready we went in the back. The dim lights are def a romantic setting. We ordered the seafood pancake.... Amazing! My friend and I had sushi while my other half had the steak. All delicious. Asian flare but amazing! The also validate your ticket too when you valet at the Hyatt.

My favorite sushi bar in Maui!! The menu is well rounded and I love the half portions !!! My favs: Black cod, Manila clams, calamari, mahi mahi and miso glazed salmon. All the sushi hamachi / Maguro and sake are always my favorite.

Service was best we had in Maui by a wide margin. Sushi was fresh and tasty. It wasn't out of this world but was very good. Not a ton of options but adequate selection. Views of ocean were spectacular. All open air seating, so be mindful when it's hot and humid.

Enjoyed the steam clams as an apetizer. Seasoned perfectly. As an entre I ordered the filet of beef (Was getting tired of fish). It was cooked perfectly and tasted great. A little bit pricey, but very good. F

PHENOMINAL!!! This restaurant is sitting on top of a waterfall in the Grand Hyatt in Maui, while overlooking the waterfall you're also staring into the gorgeous ocean, pool, mountains and palm trees of Maui. Another spot in Paradise. My Wife and I really enjoyed ourselves here. This was one of the best nights (of our lives) we had in Maui. We ordered some of the best sushi and oysters, while drinking a large bottle of Saki. Our taste buds were dancing!

We had dinner at Japengo last night. It was fabulous! We have never been to Maui, everyone we talked to said it was great sushi and a beautiful restaurant. It was the best California Roll I ever had! Sherry was delightful, she made our dinner very special. Thanks, Sherry!

Japengo did not live up to the high expectations I had going in. The ambiance is beautiful even though it is part of the Hyatt Hotel. It is close to the beach and you can hear the surf from table side. I ordered the California Maki which was stuffed and topped with fresh crab. This was good, but there wasn't anything standout about the roll. I had expected the chef to really do something special to make the fresh crab sing, but unfortunately, they missed the mark. For my entree, I ordered the Japengo shrimp fried rice. Thank goodness the server suggest the half portion because even that was huge. Unfortunately, the dish was another miss. It was completely bland and flavorless. The shrimp in the rice were stark white. So, no soy sauce? No chili sauce? No nothing!!! I actually had to ask our server to bring me a side of sambal to add a little something to the rice, but I just couldn't stomach it. I ended up eating less than a quarter of it because it was so bad. The server noticed I had barely touched it and was gracious enough to take it off the bill, even without complaint for me. That was a classy touch and I really appreciated it! I was so underwhelmed by my meal that you couldn't pay me to order dessert. That says a lot. Thanks, but no thanks Japengo.

Excellent sushi, near perfect service, heavy on the budget. Food: 5 stars Sushi was probably one of the best I've eaten outside of Asia. Not only of good quality but also innovative. Non-sushi menu was also very good, even though probably a little too expensive for what they are giving. The menu is large, so easy to find something for everyone. Service: 5 stars As expected from a fine dining restaurant service was very attentive and friendly. Nothing left to be desired here Atmosphere: 4 stars Overall very nice. Ocean view of course and live music most evenings. Can get a bit noisy with families dining here. Price: 3 stars Totally expected, being at a upper scale resort, this restaurant is very expensive. Didn't stop us from going back for the 2nd time during our stay, but just be prepared.

Good food in an amazing location. The sushi is good but nothing special in my opinion. The roll they deem spicy, to me, was not spicy at all. The restaurant won me over with the seafood curry bowl! This dish was bursting with savory flavor that wasn't too overpowering as curry dishes tend to do. The dessert was very delicious. I would recommend to anyone who would like the convenience of walking from their hotel to eat versus fighting evening traffic. The wait staff and people are extremely accommodating & friendly. Again try the desserts! So delicious!

First time I came here was for my birthday. We got there a little early, but the lounge area was open for Happy Hour. I LOVE THEIR HAPPY HOUR, but more on that later.. For dinner our server was Bobby. He was fun, friendly, & offered really great service. Give the man a raise, Japengo! For dinner we got: - Misoyaki Alaskan Black Cod -- Bubu arare lobster cream unagi glaze - Steamed Manila Clams - Kaffir lime sambal crispy onions grilled flatbread - Tengu Roll & Shrimp Tempura Hand Roll - Sake-Soy Braised Beef Shortribs -- Kalbi glaze kim chi and edamame potato - Tengu Ka'Anapali Pie -- Brownie crust banana macadamia nut ice cream whipped cream caramel chocolate The misoyaki cod was delicious as well as the manila clams. The short ribs were super tender (like butter!) but the rest was just ok. The sushi surprisingly left something to be desired, but overall the food was good. I would say however that they are overpriced for what you get. The real shining star here, I feel, is the HAPPY HOUR! That alone bumped up my review to 4 stars. My friends & I came here just for happy hour recently and it didn't disappoint! We opted for the big cushy chairs to settle in & relax for the evening. They had live entertainment and they sang Happy Birthday for my friend as well. For pupu's (appetizers), the manila clams (YES, again!!), char siu ribs, & curry calamari were our favorites. They also have a kid's menu & you get your money's worth for just $14! Good food, good drinks, at a GREAT price! I'll be back again next week for more :)

Went here for dinner with a party of 10 and sat on the patio with a gorgeous view of the sunset. Made for some great family pics! We started out with the calamari and drinks and I have to say it was probably the best calamari I have ever had! Soooo delicious! Bobby and Jon were our servers and their service was impeccable. Very attentive. I went with Bobbys recommended of the fish special and had the Ahi and again not disappointed. Great setting for an evening with the family and we will definitely be returning again before our trip is over!

Patrick was our waiter here and he was sooo sweet!! We came here for happy hour and the ambiance was a perfect way to end our trip in Maui. Elaine Ryan was singing live music - Norah Jones style - and the entire bar is outdoor ocean front, overlooking the gorgeous Hyatt pool. Tiki torches and palm trees only add to the perfection. We both ordered drinks and my hubby had a meat happy hour dish. I wanted the fried rice but I'm vegetarian so Patrick said they could make a veggie fried rice for me even though it wasn't on the menu. The regular meat rice was $12 on happy hour and he gave me the veggie rice for just $8 and it was a generous portion!! It was suuuuuper yummie wok fried rice and I happily packed my leftovers to go! The Hyatt has complimentary valet parking; get it validated at Japengo. Take note that getting your car takes 5-10 minutes since everyone valets!!

This review is for Sushi. Our favorite Sushi on Maui or anywhere - period. Have been coming here since it was Cascades with Hiroko-San & Norman making rolls (back in the day, so for about ~15 years). Today Hiroko has retired the name has changed but Norman is still there making great sushi with a new crew. Pretty much anything on the sushi menu is FRESH I like the Moriwase options too! Fresh Maguro/Ahi are probably my favorite. Madai the other day was awesome. We don't go for the crazy rolls too often but they do have a few we like. Note, this place isn't cheap, but for the quality of fish they serve (check out how deep red their Ahi is) we feel the price is fair. We have eaten off the hot menu. most recently in 2013 and everything our party ordered was delish; butterfish, chili spiced crablegs, more...

Stellar service and food. The waitress was friendly and alert and the restaurant itself was very accommodating for a last minute reservation. We ordered the ahi tuna roll, side of corn, beef dish, and their pie and strawberry shortcake dessert. All were fabulous. This was our favorite restaurant during our time on Maui and we will definitely be back for more!

Japengo didn't live up to the hype. The setting is fantastic: oceanside seating, with a cool breeze dancing against the tall tiki torches, it makes for a romantic backdrop. But the food failed to deliver. I started with the curry calamari, fried variety dusted with curry powder on a shallow bed of white noodles and sliced grapes. The flavors were interesting and while the curry added interesting aroma, it didn't really do much in terms of distinguishing the flavor itself. The sushi I had was disappointing. The swat roll with spicy tuna, sake, jalapeño and ponzu sauce was bland, it didn't come together. The blackened ahi roll with crab, ahi, avocado and spicy mayo was slightly better but just good at best. The cocktail I had was a wasabi margarita and while it packed a punch, the flavors lacked any memorable quality. If you want to pay for scenery, then this is your place. But the food was mediocre and didn't come close to justifying the prices.

We made reservations here, and actually dressed in our "nicer" clothes expecting a great dinner evening (even with the kids). What we got; GREAT service, beautiful views of the ocean and the Hyatt Pool, and mediocre food. Starters: SASHIMI STYLE HAMACHI & WATERMELON - Interesting twist with the watermelon and tobiko lychee pearls. Off to a great start creatively and taste wise. SWAT ROLL - INSIDE: spicy tuna / OUTSIDE: sake | jalapeno | ponzu sauce - Great roll, nice and spicy, perfect balance of fish and rice. DURHAM RANCH ALL NATURAL FILET OF BEEF with a side of Kaui Prawns - Nothing special about the filet. It was perfectly cooked medium rare, but there was nothing really exciting about this dish. The seasoning/salt/pepper was lacking but still a tender cut. The side of two shrimp were a bit overgrilled so you know what happens with overcooked shrimp. TENGU GRILLED SEAFOOD CURRY BOWL (scallops | mahi-mahi | prawns | salmon hanbun rice | thai red coconut curry) - Scallops were under cooked (no sear at all), prawns were average, salmon and mahi mahi were overcooked, and the rice looked like it was packed in a bowl and plopped upside down on the plate. Yes, there was a hint of curry for flavoring, but overall, this dish was a total fail with all of the different cook times of the seafood. There was no real blend of flavoring going on which made it taste bland. Kids had a menu as well, so we ordered them Chicken Tenders and a Stir-Fry Noodle - both portions were huge! Enough to feed an adult. Summary: Beautiful views, great staff, good sushi with fresh raw fish. I was craving pho but there's no way i hell I would pay $44 for a bowl of pho (even though its supposed to come with a lobster tail). Beef was average, nothing to rave about, cooked seafood needs help! If you want a glass a wine, and eat some appetizers, and enjoy the views/sunset, then this place would be ideal.

Live band, food was off the chain! Vibe was beautiful and the service was fast even during happy hour and how busy it is. The employees were really kind. Here on a vacation and I couldn't ask for more. 5 stars just because I can't put 6.

Great Japanese and Japanese fusion style inside the Hyatt hotel. We were surprised to see that the food is very authentic and service is excellent! Steam Clams were very tasty, clams were huge and the broth was delicious! Hamachi with watermelon was great! they went well together. The fried rice was great too! Kimchi pancake is a must try as well Another plus is that you can order half portion for some of their famous dishes so you get to try everything.

This restaurant is so severely overpriced that I almost cannot fathom it. I had a $35 plate of cashew chicken with a few bell peppers and a small scoop of steamed rice. It was "average" at best and maybe worth $18. The sangria was warm and instantly gave me a citric acid heartburn, the Singapore sling tasted like kool-aid and cheap gin. The worst part of this mediocre dinning experience was sitting out on a humid lanai with slow service. I'm shocked that the whole menu is seafood!? Prawns, crab, calamari, sushi, tuna and fish.... What about a nice burger or some chicken dishes (besides the cashew chicken). The Hyatt made a poor choice by having this as the "main" restaurant of the hotel.

Decided to come here because I love the restaurant Japengo in La Jolla, California. What a disappointment. This is supposed to be a 5 star restaurant with top notch chefs. I've had better sushi in Woodstock, IL. Go ahead and look up where that is. How do you screw up an Edamame dish. I think they steamed them in catfish water. Fishy tasting edamame? Has anyone ever heard of that???? My wife and I order rolls for dinner. They were mediocre. Which is unacceptable when you are being charged $23 for a sushi roll. We ordered noodles and fried rice for our 7 and 12 year old children that we brought along. That was the only thing that was exceptional. And they gave them gelato with their noodles and rice. Perhaps a 2nd star might have been justified because of the kids meal. But you can decide. I'm not donating one.

I like to give businesses at least 2 chances to woo me, so here I was again, ready to eat. ATMOSPHERE: Nothing much has changed. We still had a great table but dined earlier than last time and got a great sunset view. FOOD: Cali & Caterpillar Rolls - I'm not a sushi fan but these two were good, mainly because these are what I call "American rolls," things you'd never find in Japan or a traditional sushi bar and what I prefer. Pot Stickers - These were yummy. Soft with a nice crust, and a tasty filling. Meatballs - I really liked this dish. They were tender and had a great salty flavor. Chefs Special - The special of the night was a filet of monchong over a coconut curry mac nut sauce, with a steamed lobster tail, plain mashed potatoes, and spicy deep fried green beans. The fish was a little overdone, the lobster a little underdone. The sauce was tasty. The mashed potatoes were very good because they were plain and not infused with any junk. The green beans were too spicy and were breaded which ruined the whole dish. It's like adding fast food onto a restaurant-quality dish. I would've liked them steamed or sautéed. Lobster Chow Fun - 3.23.15 - What an odd combination. Any Hawaii local knows that chow fun usually has ground pork as the main meat, so why not try this unusual concoction? Unfortunately, it was over-powered with garlic which made the noodles bitter. The lobster tail was delicious. The two should be kept separate. SERVICE: Our greeting was inviting and friendly. Our male server was friendly, funny, professional, and attentive. TIP: We were told by a member of the hotel staff that the soy sauce used in Japengo is a secret homemade recipe from one of the chefs. And being a Hawaii-born human, we're the ultimate judge on soy sauce! And I can vouch that this concoction is damn tasty. It's not over powering, just a bit sweet, and the perfect amount of salt. Kudos! OVERALL: My experience was better the second time around. I hope to see a wider variety of dishes in the future.

I stayed at the Hyatt Regency and thought I would pay this place a visit since it was located in the hotel. Here are my thoughts: The Good: -I made same day reservations and had no issues upon arrival. This place gets busy, make sure to reserve a table! -My husband and I loved the ambiance! It had a modern Asian feel to it with a touch of Hawaiian coziness. -Our orders came out in a timely manner. -I recommend the calamari! The fried rice was decent but for parties of 2, a half portion should be good. I ordered a full size for my husband and I and we barely made a dent! The mahi mahi I ordered was incredibly delicious and juicy. My husband ordered the rainbow roll and said it was pretty good as well. The Bad (the only reasons that kept me from giving it 5 stars): -When I made the reservation, I let the hostess know we were celebrating an anniversary. Unfortunately, there was nothing Japengo did to acknowledge this. It's a fancy restaurant and people will visit for special occasions. It's something the management should work on. -Although the food was quite tasty, it is way overpriced. To me $20+ sushi rolls and even $8 miso soups are just plain ridiculous! -Minor detail but our waters were never refilled. For a place that expensive, we shouldn't be thirsty during our meal. I'm not sure if I'd go back unless I stayed at the Hyatt again. However, I think it's one of the restaurants that you go just to try at least once.

Fantastic. Great service and great food. I am in sales and have the luxury of doing a lot of entertaining (on the company dime.) I have a lot of very nice dinners in a lot of high end restaurants. Normally, I'd avoid a hotel restaurant. But, this place came highly recommended from an employee at the Ritz Carlton (who has their own sushi bar.) This place is the bomb! My wife and I shared a couple of rolls. Honolulu (awesome) and the Tootsie Roll (good) and I had some sashimi. The rolls were large and fresh. I have had sushi everywhere, including in Japan. I cannot think of a better plate of sashimi. The tuna was deep dark red, sliced thickly, and tender beyond compare. The salmon was like butter. Hamachi was sublime. We aslo tr My daughter is not a sushi eater and she had the Wagyu Filet and said "It's the best meal that I have ever had in my life."

We were a little hesitant going to Japengo based on some of the reviews on here but on a whim we ended up going, and we were glad we did. The Honolulu Roll was amazing, it's definitely worth going back for before we leave. Michele was an excellent waitress with great people skills, we mentioned being on our honeymoon and she comped our dessert. Overall, it was an amazing dinner with a great atmosphere and a fun staff.

GREAT and FRESH sushi! The service at the Sushi Bar was great and the restaurant atmosphere was very nice too.

This restaurant has a wonderful ambiance. Nice relaxing music, great views and very fresh sushi. I ordered sashimi and asked for Mackrel and scallops to be added. I got 3 pieces of tuna, mackrel, scallops and hamachi. I wish the sashimi had more selections of fish instead of just 4 different kinds of fish. Also they don't include ginger. You have to ask for ginger on the side. The menu doesn't have pictures or isn't very detailed. Example the sashimi said "premium selection chosen by the chef" 12 pieces = $30 24 pieces = $60 Which is a bit pricy for not knowing what you're getting. The staff was very friendly and quickly addressed my concerns. I asked for lychee martini without the pineapple. I got their original lychee-tini with pineapple vodka which I had to return. I specifically asked for no pineapple flavor in my martini. So to sum it up this is not your typical sushi restaurant. Even the ginger tasted different but the fish was amazingly fresh and really good.

Eh. Just had dinner here. Astonished at the price. Go to Morimoto instead. The sushi was just okay. The mojito - avoid!! The mahi mahi was good. It took a very long time to get our food. Service okay, just slow. It doesn't warrant the price. All in all, mediocre.

We had reservations for 8 pm, but went a little earlier to catch the sunset from the bar, at check in they were great and seated us right away, nice table with a ocean and Black Rock view. Amazing sunset sipping wine and some pretty darn good sushi. Our waiter and the food runners were on their game. We started with some calamari a few rolls and a shared dessert. One of our nicest meals on Maui. I would return in a heartbeat.

I would definitely give the view at sunset 4 stars but overall I think this was a bit of a tourist trap. The food was overpriced and mediocre at best. Given the view and atmosphere, I had high hopes but the food was a bit of a let down. Started with the hamachi and watermelon which was a unique combination that fell flat. The hamachi paired with the watermelon and lychee pearls turned out to be all too sweet for a fresh sashimi dish. Would have benefited from a little spice in this dish. We followed this with a few roles that were pretty average. I would have loved the chef to be inventive with some untraditional style roles unique to this restaurant. All in all, I loved the view at sunset but the food was not worth the high priced bill.

It's hard to rate this place coming from LA as it was very expensive for just decent sushi. The pupu platter at happy hour was pretty good and the drinks are excellent. The view is nice too. I would probably not come here if we were not guests at the hotel.

We loved this place! It's a little pricey-er than most places around, but totally worth it. The food was amazing, and the service was very good as well. We were a group of 5, some people got the specials, some sushi, some meat, and it all came at the same time. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a nice dinner out!

Dear Japengo We had the opportunity to have Sheri as our server May 15, 2015 for dinner. There were may Restaurants during our vacation that we ate at, however her service and attention to detail was 12 stars..If she is a reflection of the the training staff at Japengo, your company has done a fine job. We are home now and Sharing both pictures and the great time during our vacation, Sheri name came up along with your Restaurant. What a great place to eat the food and service match each other, hats off to both our server Sheri and Japengo.. Always ask for sheri when dinning @ Japengo...

5:00pm Happy Hour after a long day of travel? Perfect. I wish there was sushi on the happy hour menu. Grab a table early and enjoy the view of the whales, water, and sunset (slightly obstructed). Get the Maui dining app. They have a coupon for a free appetizer with a purchase of an entree. We also ordered the small moriawase (chef's sashimi selection) and uni. Yummy!! Why only 4 stars? Our waitress was terrible. She was extremely slow, kept forgetting the shrimp head, and delivered our food after taking away our chopsticks without bringing us new utensils for the next course.

This review is for their Happy Hour. What a nice setting and ambiance. We went here on a Saturday early evening for their happy hour. Great prices for a resort happy hour. The drinks and appetizers were very good. I liked the friend rice which included a lot of shrimp and chicken. The performer playing the guitar and singing, set the mood nicely. Good and attentive service. A solid choice in Kaanapali.

We had dinner and drinks here after a long day and really enjoyed both. I don't really eat sushi, but my husband had the Lahaina roll and Take sushi (Scottish salmon) and really enjoyed both. I had a half order of mahi mahi and fried rice ( both were excellent)! This place gets busy so you definitely want a reservation. Strongly recommend that you give it a try! They also have a great happy hour from 5-6:30 with great drinks and some appetizers too :)

Ordered a few cocktails and chilled listening to entertainment. We stayed at the Hyatt and this was ideal for a shirt break for happy hour. View was nice and the staff was friendly. Waited a bit for our appetizer though.

Great food, great service, great location! We went twice during our honeymoon, and I am only disappointed I didn't try the clams on the first visit so I could have had them multiple times. They were incredibly flavorful, and we wanted to drink the broth up with a straw. Delicious sushi, and good desserts as well. If I am ever back in Maui I will be back!

Cocktails were good, service was excellent, very friendly staff but the food is just subpar. The setting is beautiful; the view is what you are paying for. We started with the Korean Seafood Pancake which was described on the menu as follows: KOREAN SEAFOOD PANCAKE 22 lobster | kim chi | crab | shrimp | calamari kochujang aioli | sesame soy sauce It did not look or taste like a seafood cake, more like a greasy doughy pizza with very few pieces of overcooked tough seafood in a creamy casserole-like sauce. The inside of the dough was undercooked and raw in some bites. We also had miso soup, which was good. As far as the sushi, we ordered the following: BLACKENED AHI ROLL 22 INSIDE: crab | avocado | cucumber OUTSIDE: blackened ahi | spicy mayo maui onion | ponzu | wasabi tobiko HONOLULU ROLL 20 INSIDE: maguro | avocado | cucumber OUTSIDE: sweet chili sauce | tempura "crunchies" The Ahi Roll had good flavor and the fish tasted fresh; however, it had a lot of raw onion slices laced over the outside which didn't seem to pair well with the amount of ahi that was served on the roll. A little less onion or a little more ahi and it would have been more balanced. The onion just seemed to overpower everything. The Honolulu Roll was good but didn't taste fresh, like the Ahi roll tasted. Instead it tasted more like something that was pre-made and sitting around for a few hours. It reminded me of sushi you buy pre-made at Wegman's or another supermarket. Just before our waiter came over to ask if we wanted dessert a large cockroach came over to say hello which sort of ruined our appetite for dessert. But it is Maui and we were sitting outside so what do you expect. Overall, the experience wasn't bad but didn't leave a great impression & had me wishing the food was better. I would come back probably for sunset and a cocktail because the view from the restaurant is stunning.

We live up the hill from the resort. If we're looking for a easy place to get something to eat we always head to the Japengo bar. Darlene is a great bartender and is one of very few that can mix a Orange Cosmo to perfection. The menu offers a lot of options. Everything we've had is great.

Where do I start? Happy hour. The Japengo PuPu Platter was most awesome. Ambiance, drinks, service all exceptional. Now to the main course. The fried rice was awesome I mean AWESOME. Hamachi completely great. There is not a bad thing I can say about this place!!!!!

One of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Such a nice view and ambiance. The food is incredible. Everything is so fresh and unique. I absolutely loved the Mahi Mahi (which had a delicious coconut cream sauce) and the tuna sashimi (was so so soft.) So yummy!

I ate at this restaurant he first night I arrived at the Hyatt and never again will I eat there. Every step in the experience from the service to the food was terrible to the point of comedy. The dining room was full so the hostess offered the sushi lounge which was fine we were very hungry and just wanted good after traveling all day. We ordered miso soup that arrived without spoons. When we finally saw the server again to ask for them he brought back standard flag wear spoons which anyone who has experienced miso soup with such a spoon knows that the spoon absorbs all the heat from the soup making it difficult to use and they serve eye soup in ceramic pots that also absorb the heat making it so you cannot drink eye soup either. We were never given napkins until after our sushi rolls arrived and we had to ask he food runner for utensils when he brought them back we were given one paper napkin each.... Paper napkins with $20 rolls left me giggling at their restaurant ideology. I felt like because we were sitting in the sushi lounge we were getting less than subpar service even though we were paying the same price as he dining room. Furthermore the sushi rolls were awful. The roll I ordered must have been sitting out for some time cause the fish on the outside of the roll were room temperature and it tasted fishy. I stopped eating it after two rolls when on the third I saw a scale on one if the pieces. My friend was very nonplussed about their roll to which i only tried one and quickly gave up on the restaurant. They wouldn't even manage a water order. After the meal was already served I asked again if we could have water and he server brought back only one water for me even bough I asked for water for the table. The only thing that was good was my beer. The food was overpriced and the service was terrible. Never going here again and I hope others are weary to dine here too. There are much better places in Front street which is a short three minute drive.

Great service, great view, amazing sushi (best we've had). A bit pricey for what you get -- but worth it! With a reservation (made a few hours in advance) we had a beautiful front row view for sunset.

Staff was great, but the sushi was not the best. I am sure if you are from the mid west it would be great but I am from Newport and we have fantastic sushi! It was dry and not rolled tight.

Had a great dinner tonight at Japengo. The ambience was nice, outdoor, and romantic. My boyfriend and I had the dragon roll to start with and it was delicious. I had the parmesan crusted monchong special and it was yummy. Our server Sheri was very pleasant and we were very happy with our service. I'm glad we decided on having dinner here. I recommend making reservations, especially if you want to watch the sunset from here.

Had dinner here on our last night. We weren't dissappointed ;) Uni was so fresh again. Blackened ahi roll was so good we ordered 2 orders. We also had the Big roll and swat roll along sashimi platter. The Great service by out waitress and the hostess NATALIE was so helpful do to a reservation snafu. We originally had reservations at 7pm but had to chng them to 830 because of an emergency. I called and notified the restaurant and was told by a male host that this was fine. However when we arrived he claimed we had "no" reservation. He was rude but Natalie was awesome!!!!! She had us wait in the bar area and soon had us seated ;))))

We went here with a large party for my husband's 40th birthday...the atmosphere is amazing! Beautiful ocean view with the best service from our waiter. Our waiter was friendly, sincere, accommodating and patient with us the entire evening (we had 6 adults and 6 kids in our party). I will say that we all took a deep breath when we saw the prices on the menu...but everything was very good quality and tasty. Definitely worth it!

I highly Do Not Recommend! We made reservations dinner and we made than at 5:30 because happy hour was from 5:00 to 6:30. When we seated and when it came time for the drink order the server said we could not get the happy hour drink specials because we were dinning in? That the happy hour is just to get people in the restaurant to dine in. The food was ok..nothing special, the server was nice...nothing outstanding. Told the female manger Natalie about what the server said, she looked concerned but never I'm sorry. Won't be going back during our stay and I suggest no one eats there either. You can get food somewhere with good taste and drinks.

This was one of the best meals I've had on Maui! The sushi rolls were the best I've ever had, and as a HUGE added bonus for people like me, they offer gluten and dairy free preparation for almost everything on the menu. They even have tamari sauce to serve with the rolls so that us gluten free folks can truly enjoy them! Our server was fantastic and everyone in our group of five was very happy. I couldn't recommend it highly enough!

Food was very good but the service was even better. We went twice and both times Bobby waited on us - seemed like he would annoying when you first meet him (talks a lot) but that guy was awesome - really astute and was magnificent with us as we had two kids under 3. Great desserts too - well worth the visit and we will keep going back each time we visit.

We are here on our honeymoon and went here yesterday (1st day of arrival). Happy hour was great: curry powdered calamari on top of seaweed salad & ribs (a little sweeter than I expected but still good). 2 specialty cocktails which were great. Paid the check and went to the dining room for our dinner reservation. Our server's name was Grace and she was the highlight of our meal. She was so friendly and genuinely seemed to care. I worked as a server for 10 years and honestly, know it's hard to stay genuinely nice to guests. But Grace, you made our dinner so special. Thanks! The food was phenomenal. Nothing to complain about.

We stayed at the Hyatt for our honeymoon and kept hearing how great Japengo was, which being sushi fans intrigued us. We saved it for our swanky dinner night, seeing how it was a pretty pricey menu. The food was a total disappointment! I would highly recommend Roys right up the street instead.

Despite the high prices, the food, presentation, and service Japengo has is phenomenal. Their food quality is some of the best we've had, we ordered the salmon plate, the short rib plate, and the white fish bowl. DELICIOUS! We also had an amazing server to give us tips for our drive to Hana the next day!

Service and atmosphere were great, sushi was not good at all! I would not eat here again. Discussed with a couple of other people around us and they agreed. Hopefully it was just a bad evening any bad experience for us. Previous reviews seemed solid which is why we made the decision to eat here

We took the $50 menu and we were really impressed by the food quality and the taste of each meal. It was delicious, the view was astounding, and the service was perfect. We took the opportunity to try all plates (there are 2 choices for starter, entree and desert) and they were all fantastic. I definitely recommend trying out the menu there. Can't really say anything about the rest as we have not tried them out.

Another overpriced tourist trap. My wife and I had a $100 restaurant credit because we were able to sit through a Hyatt timeshare presentation without running away, screaming; so we decided to try Maui Hyatt's top restaurant, Japengo. First, the view can be gorgeous (depending on your table location), and there's nothing like watching a Pacific sunset while you enjoy dinner. The food, however, does not justify the high prices. Call me crazy, but if I'm "paying" $42 for a medium-rare prime rib, I really hope it doesn't come out medium-well, with thick strings of fat. Also, the potato-corn-lobster croquet was fairly bland. My wife seemed to enjoy her fried rice, but how can you mess up fried rice? For dessert, we tried the layered chocolate cake with macadamia nut ice cream, bananas, etc. It was absurdly sweet. I'm not sure why tourist hot spots seems to assume that every patron wants three pounds of sugar cooked into every breakfast/dessert dish, but sometimes it's nice to cut back on the sugar and allow the other flavors to come out from hiding. Altogether, our bill used up most of our credit, and while the food served its purpose, I can't help but feel like $100 at Japengo buys you a meal that would sell for about $40-45 elsewhere. Advice: If you happen to have restaurant credit at Hyatt, don't shy away from using it at Japengo, because it's probably Hyatt's best on-site option. Of course, that isn't a particularly high compliment.

Requested a table via OpenTable for "the point" and it was great. Could not see the sunset because of the vog but it was still nice. Order some drinks, curry calamari, roasted asparagus, sushi and a seafood special with scallops, lobster and shrimp. Everything tasted great. Started off kind of shaky for me cause I felt that the waitress rushed over the explanation of the seafood special thinking that I would order it because of the price. She explained it in more detail to the table behind us. Oh well. Other than that, very good experience.

Incredible view for sunset. Our waiter, Bobby, was a really nice guy and very helpful. And the sushi was amazing. Incredibly fresh! My wife typically makes our sushi orders and I was in no way disappointed. This place delivers. Oh and there are penguins at the resort. Interesting and informative touch!

This is at the hotel I am staying at. It was recommended to me by someone at home. I ordered the soft shell crab hand roll which was very good and the beef short rib with edamame kimchi mashed potatoes, also very good. This place overlooks the ocean at the Hyatt resort. Service was great. The food was great, but not quite 5 star. I was still very happy with my meal. I also had 2 happy hour drinks. It would be great if they provided some happy hour sushi options and spruced up their happy hour drink menu.

  • Jannae V.

Some of the best sushi I have ever had! Started off our vacation with this place for dinner and bookended with it. The fried rice was our app, supper yummy, you only need a half size. Downside...I sent my drink back, and I NEVER do that! It was just way too strong, which let's face it I usually wouldn't argue with, but this was just too much. The waitress said she even tried it and was taken aback. Staff was super friendly both visits, even offered to take our photos out on the grounds for the sunset.

  • Lianne G.

On our last night of our honeymoon, we made a last minute reservation at Japengo. WOW. We got seated on the patio facing the water, during sunset. I don't need to tell you how beautiful that was. Our server was attentive. Even when she put in our order incorrectly, she was fast to remedy it. The malasadas... GET THEM. The hubby is NOT a dessert person but he is still raving about these. Will be visiting again when we're in Maui!

Just okay. I had two sushi rolls...maybe I have high standards coming from Seattle. Eatable but nothing memorable....wife had the fried rice and ribs....the ribs were awful...the fried rice is actually pretty good. Also had a pineapple martini which was excellent....overall besides the rice the food just wasn't good.

Excellent excellent excellent. Best sushi I have ever had, and I have eaten a lot of sushi. Ambiance is great, Mai tai's so good, fried rice to die for, the only possible downside is it is pricey, but in my opinion totally worth It.

First night of mine & my husbands honeymoon couldn't have asked for a better more romantic dinner with an amazing server! Bobby is the man! He helped us with selections off the menu & was just overall a wonderful pleasant outgoing person! We may be back before we leave! I had Honolulu roll= melt in your mouth yum! My husband had an ahi stake which he loved and we shared a bowl of fried rice and still had a whole bunch to take back to our condo!

My wife and I visited on our honeymoon 15 years ago, and now again with our 3 kids. The sushi was as amazing as we remember, the wait staff was friendly and helpful, and the drinks were strong! (and good). Our children even ate the sushi and teriyaki beef, which was surprising. Beautiful views of the water and sunset. And when we accidentally left a bag there with our glasses and important items, the manager locked it away and kept it in hopes we'd come back the next day to get it (we did). It's a place that caters to tourists but did not treat us like tourists at all. Great experience.

One word: AH-MAAAZIIING!!! Every part of our experience in this restaurant was outstanding! We've visited a few times before for dinner, but our latest visit happened to be earlier and during Japengo's "Pint Night" with Maui Brewing Co. and everything was amazing. It was our first time enjoying their Happy Hour and, while it is short (only from 5-6:30pm), it is definitely one I will strive to catch again. Their pupu platter was a perfect start -- it consists of some char siu ribs, a couple of shrimp tempura, spicy edamame, and of course the famed curry-dusted calamari (which never ever disappoints!). Among the other items we had for dinner (shrimp tempura roll and a 50/50 roll), their fried rice is legendary! For drinks, the boyfriend enjoyed the Lorenzini from Maui Brewing (which I hope eventually becomes a staple) and I tried out Japengo's different cocktails. I had a few of the ones on happy hour, so I forget most of their names, but they were all terrific. Our server Patrick was super duper! He was attentive without being overbearing, and was always prompt to address any of our needs (like more cocktails!). We also got an extra treat on our visit. I had no clue Japengo offered live music in their lounge area, but we were thoroughly pleasantly surprised to see local talent Kanoa jamming! He is both talented and charming, playing a variety of songs with different genres and being able to engage such a diverse crowd. All in all, our last visit just solidified why Japengo is one of our favorite spots on the island. It's on the pricier side, but the food, the service, the experience in general is definitely worth it. Mahalo to the awesome Japengo staff who make it all happen!

Let me start by saying I have eaten at some of the best restaurants, high end and low, all around the world. Japengo in Maui was a giant let down. First, we arrived for our reservation 15 min early and the restaurant had plenty of open seating but decided to make us wait. I don't know if this is to keep up the facade that this is a high end restaurant. It has high end pricing, but DO NOT let that fool you. The wait staff had a very blasé attitude in general. To paint a better picture we ordered a typical salad at most sushi restaurants, a cucumber sunomono to start. I wasn't expecting a bowl of plain sliced cucumbers. No flavor whatsoever. Then we decided on the boss roll. It was so salty we each ate one piece and decided that roll was out of the question. Then comes the thunder roll. Now the description says it's made with extra spicy tuna. Most spicy tuna I've eaten elsewhere is on the mild side for me and when it's described as really spicy I enjoy it the most. Both my husband and I can handle our spice, but this roll was inedible. We immediately felt sick to our stomachs. I understand some people like that much spice but the waitress could have said something like "Warning. This probably spicier than what you would expect. " upon ordering. Now comes the worst part. When I asked to have a word with the waitress and explain that we weren't enjoying our meal, we were so badly condescended, even my husband was put off, and he is a very patient man. She spoke to us as if we were two teenagers on a first date. This isn't our first time eating at a "high end" restaurant and certainly not our first time ordering sushi. Oh and also... We are full grown adults! She was kind enough to not charge for the rolls but we left with a bad taste in our mouths, literally!!!!

My husband and I spent our last meal of our vacation at Japenga and we are glad we did. Everything was phenomenal, from the view, to the food, service, and atmosphere. We got a table with an amazing view of the sunset. Our waitress took her time explaining the menu and what specifically were the fresh and local options. We decided on the potstickers and hamachi with watermelon for our starters. The hamachi was out of this world, and very unlike anything either of us had ever tried. I highly recommend it. Loving sushi, we got the the Blackened Ahi and Honolulu rolls. Both spectacular. We also got some local pieces of nigiri and the sake salmon. The salmon wasn't local, but we had to get it, as it is our favorite. It was the best salmon we had ever had in our lives. Being the last few hours on Maui, we splurged for dessert and got the flaming pineapple upside down cake. The perfect end to the perfect meal. Even though he meal overall was a bit pricey, it was worth every bite.

This place is delicious!! Great food, fresh fish, and service is wonderful. They are very accommodating with food allergies (gluten free menu available) and there is a lot to choose from. Definitely recommended!!

I like the atmosphere. A restaurant in Hyatt Maui right on the beach setting. Listening to the sound of waves eating dinner under the torches was romantic (but was kinda dark lol). Over all I gave three stars because: Waiting time: 30minutes w/reservation.... What the hell. Waitress: barely came by our table to check on us, the only time she was friendly and acted like she cared was when it was time for us to pay. We did spend about $300 and the services we had was junk. Food quality: it was ok but with the price I would not pay that much for the quality of food.... Oh well it was my bf and my anniversary vacay. Would I go back? Um..... Maybe not.

Amazing fish. Breathtaking views. Live Hawaiian music. We were celebrating for my mom and we absolutely loved it. We enjoyed the Korean pancakes and the chefs special at the time which was a lobster sushi roll. Shrimp tempura in the roll made it #NextLevel good :)

They say Japengo. I say Japen-don't-go. The food was not good at all and our server rushed us to order and checked on us every couple minutes. Waiter: "How is everything tasting guys?" Us: "Good, thanks" 2 minutes later... Waiter: "How is everything tasting guys?" Us: "Still good, thanks." Literally a minute later... Waiter: "How is everything tasting guys?" Okay, I think you get the point. The food itself was just bad. Not sure how else to describe it but the chef must not have taste buds or something because all the dishes were way off and completely unappetizing. Bad food. Bad service. Don't waste your money here.

My bf and I were at the Hyatt for a vacation and decided to stay at the resort for a late dinner and tried Japengo. We were FAR from disappointed! First, the atmosphere was amazing. Candles and standing torches dimly lit the outdoor seating area and made everything look very beautiful with the view of the ocean right in front of you. We ordered the clams, a couple rolls, and the chef's selection. The chef's selection really stood out. The sashimi was so fresh and practically melted in your mouth. So good. Highly recommended. My favorite were the hamachi and shrimp. We didn't get a chance to try their drinks because frankly I was a little hungover from the day but their sake cocktails looked refreshing

Japengo is the ultimate tourist trap for this resort. It has a fun name with menu items that sound better than they actually are with service that could be so much better. The service (2 stars) started out great but then just went downhill. Our server was nice at first but then seemed a little rude afterwards. The cocktails were strong. I ordered the pineapple lychee cocktail (2 stars) which did not have as much fruity flavor as I had hoped. The mai tai was good (4 stars). The Cucumber Sunomono (1 star) had the taste of all vinegar with no sweet balance like others I have tried. The Grilled Mahi Mahi (2 stars) was a good portion for one, but it was just okay. The fish was a tad dry. The lemongrass was subtle and everything needed more flavor. The Blackened Ahi Roll (2 stars) was just a standard sushi roll with tuna. The flavors were expected and nothing special. The Tootsie Roll (2 stars) was better, and the mushrooms added a unique flavor to the roll. However, both rolls were a bit dense bit and felt too heavy. I always save room for dessert, but I did not want to spend another penny. I regret this pricey meal and tried to convince myself that it wasn't too bad. I should have left the hotel and gone to Star Noodle again.

Best advice for Japengo- be a sushi lover and an adventurous eater, and don't bother coming if you're worried about prices because it'll severely limit your experience. I'd compare Japengo to Nobu if you've ever visited one on the mainland. Food- we loved all the raw nigiri, the couple rolls we had, and the cooked dishes, with highlights being the black cod miso and the sea urchin (uni). They even brought out a wonderful slice of dessert for my wife whose birthday it was that evening. A couple, doing it properly, including a couple drinks each, should expect to be paying at or above $200 including the tip. I can tell you it's worth it. Mahalo Japengo, keep doing what you do.

Japengo was only okay. We went there for dinner because of the four star plus reviews by so many Yelpers. We ordered a Tengu roll, Japengo fried rice, and the steamed mussels. The mussels were not bad, somewhat tasty. However the fried rice was quite poorly done, and the Tengu roll was just too much unagi teriyaki sauce on top, while the unagi wasn't that pleasant to eat either as it was full of not too soft bones. In anyway, there's nothing terribly wrong with this place, and I can see myself eating it after a few drinks and don't want to drive out if staying in the nearby resort, but there are better restaurants if you have to drive.

My family and I ate here for a couple nights when we stayed at the Hyatt recently. The food really is delicious; I highly recommend the Honolulu roll and the sake-soy beef short ribs. I really enjoyed the ambiance (definitely make a reservation to sit out in the back for sunset) and stayed for coffee and dessert. We had the Kaanapali Pie both nights we ate here because it was so yummy! For the high price we payed for the meal, I feel that we definitely got an experience out of it. If you're looking for sushi, this is the place to go.

Ambience was perfect!!! We got sushi. The Honolulu roll was divine!!!!! The dragon roll was nothing to write home about but was still good. The waiter recommended the blackened ahi roll and we wish we had gotten that instead of the dragon roll. But we were both mmmmmm-ing with each bite of the Honolulu roll. Good service too.

OMG! This was fantastic!!! Staff was beyond fabulous!! The steamer clams were to die for. The curry dusted calimari were awesome as well... I had the Swat Roll and it was to die for... I can not say enough about the staff and this restaurant! You will not be disappointed.

WAH?! This is a fancy restaurant?! Totally unassuming by day, you would scamper by in your flip flops and bathing suit and not bat an eye. But by night it comes alive with gorgeous lighting and modern Zen decor. The food is classic foodie fare. Artfully plated perfectly balanced bites of delicious Asian inspired dishes--primarily Japanese inspired. I purposefully asked for nigiri that was fresh from the island (which is not much of it actually.) I figured since in California we have great sushi but it's not usually caught near by either, I really wanted local raw fish since I KNOW it's possible in Hawaii! Mainly the fish caught locally for sushi is tuna, which I had. It was fantastic. I also had the half order of seafood chow fun. I was pleasantly surprised how large it was! Great if you are ordering other things. The onion rings were tempura style and probably could be reclassified as an illegal substance. Totally addictive. Lastly my man had the glazed ribs which pretty much melted in your mouth and had a wonderful balance of sweet and savory. If you can't get a reservation, never fear, I think the bar is prettier and the service is wonderful. Like most of Maui, customer service is a priority and it shows.

Awesome vibes! Really enjoyed the ambiance to this place. Fortunately we were seated on a table with a beautiful ocean view. Service was awesome! Food wasn't the best sushi ive ever had but I will be back to try out some other roles on the next trip to Maui.

Poor service!!! Excellent food. So we are staying at hyatt hotel and decided to try this restaurant. We ordered edamame and 2 rolls.... First arrived the rolls and one wasn't the one we ordered. They changed them. We finished them and after 15 min the waiter ask anything else? Yes the edamame!! ( which are supposed to be appetizer!)

Went to Japengo last night, Wow!! My son made the reservation, great choice. For appetizers we had the Korean seafood pancake and the duck meatballs. The pancake was crispy and the best one I've ever had. The duck meatballs were succulent in a slightly sweet sauce. Fantastic. I had a raw shrimp sushi which was great. The sushi looked fantastic but we didn't order much because my wife and son are not sushites like me. I had the pork chop which was well marbled, tender and delicious. My son's ribeye looked fantastic, but I didn't get to try it because my son polished it off. My wife had the seafood curry bowl another hit. For dessert we had the brownie banana fudge thing. Perfect ending. Oh, our waiter Bobby was extremely entertaining and ultimately knowledgable. He truly made the experience perfect. Great guy. If you go you won't be disappointed.

For the price you pay, I expected better service. Our waiter was nice, but not very attentive or informative. Took forever on our food, and I requested dessert first, but why did it take freaking 45 min. to get 1 cup of plain chocolate ice cream? I'd be more understanding if it were presented on a plate with pretty garnish and berries, but it was still in a paper cup like it came straight out of the 7-11 freezer, with no toppings or anything that justified the 45 min wait! Food was great, so we decided to get take out the next night, but were sorely disappointed. maybe it was a different chef? or they just didn't care since we were getting it to go? I ordered the same thing again (the $35 plate of chow fun) noodles overcooked, actually, it was burnt. And seafood was not fresh, shrimp tasted old and moldy almost. And the kids fried rice was really salty, it was just awful =(

Tonight we decided to celebrate our 9 year anniversary at Japengo. We wanted to splurge so we decided on getting the Manila clams and the curry dusted calamari for starters. It was our second time getting the calamari and clams and it did not disappoint. Then we also ordered 3 sushi rolls, the tengu roll, the blackened ahi roll and the dragon roll. All 3 were great. Then for our entries, we ordered the rib eye and the seafood curry bowl. Basically everything was delicious. They even gave us a free Kaanapali pie for dessert to celebrate our anniversary. How sweet of them! I ended up not finishing my entree so I asked if I could get a box. A nice man offered to box it for me. A few minutes go by and he comes back to our table and said that someone had thrown away my food and he was sorry about it. I wasn't to mad about it, people make mistakes. But what really impressed me was when one of the managers came up to me and offered to box up an appetizer or dessert, so I choose the dessert. That was really nice of them and it shows that they care about customer service. The guy came back and had said that he actually did box it up, and just had put it down somewhere and almost forgotten about it. I went home more than satisfied. I love this place. Definitely going back.

Very good sushi stop, but be prepared to pay. Ordered 3 diffrent rolls, but my favorite would be spicy ahi roll. All the rolls had alot of thought in respect to flavor, no wasibi or soy sauce needed, they were amazing on their own. For non sushi eaters there is a somewhat small menu and pretty pricy. A friend ordered a $26 or so vegtable stir fry with tofu (no meat) and it came out in a small bowl could've gotten the same thing at a mogolian BBQ for much less. Service was average waitress clearly saw doing certain things as below her pay grade and called in another man to do everything except take our order (wish I could've tipped him), but she was well informed and all. Overall good sushi, will return, but if more than half of your party dosent like raw fish, I would recommend looking elsewhere

Location. view, and interior decoration , and of course THE PENGUINS are all 5 STARS. Unfortunately that is all that was special. We went out of our way to go to JAPENGO before 6:00. It was worth it, the sunrise view was worth the early reservation, the food and service was not. After a few minutes the sunrise enjoyment was passed to thinking about dinner. The waitress came to the table weak in charm and passion. Later on she seemed incapable or unwilling to check on our table. Lucky enough an elder busboy did seem to try to take care of us. A small example of the waitress. We have been going to Sansei for sushi for years now while in Maui. Sansei give major discounts before 6:00 and after 10:00. I asked the waitress if Japengo gives discounts similar to SANSEI. She totally understood the question and comparison, she then made it very clear No Im sorrybbut Japengo does not give discounts'. I went to YELP and looked at pictures at Japengo, there I saw a board showing the early discounts. Just a small point but it is a point about her ability. When we ordered items the waitress forgot about certain of our orders. More so she never asked after receiving the food if we were happy. Our dinner for 4 was $251 before tip the waitress received a 15% tip but I was being generous given her time and ability. We order a few large rolls as well as some Nigri pieces all were fine nothing was special. There were rolls that I did not order, they were well presented rolls, the rolls where the fish is rolled around the roll. Pretty but been there seen that. Personally although the presentation is positive often rolls that have the fish oustide the roll often fall apart when dropped in soy sauce. For that reason I generally avoid those presented rolls. I am rating this Sushi restaurant 3 STARS but be certain I think of it more like 2.5 STARS. You will love the room, live with the service, be fine with the food but you will hate what you received for your money. Have a drink at Japengo then go to SANSEI for dinner.

Two Part Review: $26 for fried rice. Does that say enough? Kind of ridiculous pricing on a crazy level. Music and ambiance was nice. Our waiter did the bare minimum in asking for our order but never once engaged. We sat in the patio area because the dining room was full. It felt more relaxing because it was lounge seating style. Made it a tad hard to eat but we didn't mind. Wish we got here sooner to enjoy the view everyone talked about. Pitch black by the time we sat down so nothing to stare at except for each other. Overall, I just think it's WAAAAYYYYY overpriced and not exactly worth the cost.

I love this Hyatt, I love all the restaurants in here and when I sit at the bar here with my wife the service is impeccable. Unfortunately it only takes one bad apple or in this case an employee to ruin the rating of this restaurant. Came here twice over a 4 month period and twice the same thing happened. My wife and I wanted to sit in the bar area in one of the 8 open tables, when we sat down we were told those were reserved??? For whom I don't know. Same thing happened when we asked for one of those tables when we were there a week ago, said there was a wait. Now the kicker, both times we went to the bar and both times those tables and about 5-7 others remained unused for the two hours we sat at the bar. I addressed this with the Manager and he said he would look into it. Apparently this one hostess has a goal of not seating nor servicing the customers, maybe she needs to go away so I could rate this place a lot higher, as the bartenders are great and so is the food, if only they would let us sit in the bar area????

Lovely experience. Wife and I are in Maui for the 2014 Ram Dass retreat, so we're not staying at the Hyatt where Japengo is located. However, it's a short drive from our resort, so it was our choice tonight for an offsite meal. Excellent choice, as our food was delicious and the service was great! We shared pork ribs for a starter, my wife had the filet mignon, and I had the ahi tuna. I can confidently and wholeheartedly recommend each dish!

Its my first time here and decided to have some steak for dinner for my birthday. The ambience in Japengo is amazing! The Rib eye steak is a must try!. Dave was the server and he was excellent! He was very professional, calm and accomodating, he even gave me a free birthday cake! That was awesome! Thank you!

I enjoyed their sushi. They are overpriced on a lot of their menu but it was good food. The service was very slow. We sat and enjoyed the live music while we dined, so it ended being a pretty nice evening. The rolls seemed fresh and tasty. Good portions.
