Sands of Kahana sits right across the street from the Kahana Falls. Cross the street and look for the blue roof and you will eventually get there. Very short walk. This restaurant is located in their hotel by the pool. We found out that they have a cheap no non sense breakfast if you're an early riser. The deal is: $3.99 breakfast special from 7:30-8:30 by the pool:) It's eggs however you want it cooked, bacon or ham and potatoes. Believe me this is a great deal in Maui or any island at all. You have an awesome view of the beach with the pool sorta in between the view. It's meant to be an open setting with low walls... Service is slow..I mean the servers are..:) But no rush...cheap food, great view...repeat the mantra...and you will be good for the day...

Horrid service, incomplete food orders, and the whole place is just weird. All the waiters are running around stressed to the limit - they all look like they really hate it there. Oh, and my husband's coffee arrived in a mug that turned out to have a layer of cream (or something...) caked on the bottom. It never got washed. (!!!) So, if you like clean cups, don't eat here. They did comp his meal, but this "wonderful" experience will stay with him forever. When we asked for the Manager, our waiter told us that there wasn't one on duty. I then asked for the person in charge, and he said - "well, we are all equal here." Ugh. Wow. Who trains these people? Anyways... not recommended.

Terrible. From what I can tell everyone who works here hates their jobs. But why wouldn't you? Food drink service all terrible.

The other reviews have complained of average food and bad service. I can't refute anything, but I enjoyed their happy hour deals. We showed up last minute and still received the discount. Our server comped our nachos when the service was slow. Their strengths were having live music with cheap and tasty (though not strong) drinks.

I don't like to complain but this place makes the Olive Garden look good. It belongs in a small Midwest town and not in Maui. The portions are weak but that's probably a good thing because the food is mediocre at best. I recommend going elsewhere, anywhere. The service was marginal too. We own here and I thought I would give it a try. Mistake. Never again. Ever. I consulted with my family and they said that "it was not that bad". So I'm going from 1 to 2 stars. I've just come to expect better in restaurants. This place fell way short of expectations of what I consider a great place to eat.

Yummy!!! We stopped by for a late (230pm) lunch and got sandwiches and a dessert and it was great! Nothing fancy, but if youre in the area there arent a ton of options so this worked for us! It would be great if you had kids who wanted to swim because you could get a seat that looks at the pool and enjoy a meal that way.

This used tone a great restaurant, but it recently changed owners/management and it is terrible. Over priced and bad food. Happy hour, which was great under the old ownership, is now 50 cents off colors or bud light and $1 off wine. Terrible. Quite sad to see it change as my family really enjoyed the old place for breakfast, happy hour and dinner.

Tried to go for happy hour only to find out it ended super early. We stayed anyways to take advantage of the %50 off dinner deal and shared the macadamia nut crusted fish which was really good. The calamari was pretty good too. We ordered drinks which were just ok and very expensive. Also we kept getting splashed by kids in the pool and there was a singer there who kept talk-singing. Seemed like some sort of inside joke, but for us it was just kind of annoying. Might be better on a lively night but the evening we went there the atmosphere was just not great and we left as soon as we could

My husband and I stayed at the Sands of Kahana and decided to go to the restaurant by the pool. What a wonderful surprise. We went during their half price happy hour. Starting with the bread everything was great. The papaya seed salad dressing was fabulous. I had the Macadamia nut crusted Mahi Mahi and my husband had the meatloaf, both were wonderful. We decided this was the best dining experience we have had in 2 weeks here.

This place is across the street from our time share and we noticed the $5 breakfast special. Not wanting to pass up a deal in Maui we jumped on it. We got a table facing the beach and the property pool. The view alone is worth the $5! I ordered some oatmeal while hubby ordered the two egg breakfast. Very basic, 2 eggs over easy, home style potatoes, and 2 pieces of scrawny bacon. Oatmeal was served with brown sugar , raisins, and milk. We didn't expect much for $5 so it served its purpose. Service was prompt and efficient . We sent our friends over when they arrived the next day and they enjoyed it but said their was some confusion over the $5 pricing. We stuck to our condo for home made breakfast the rest of the week to save moola. Another day I returned to get a smoothie which was pretty highly priced at $6, I was disappointed it was made with a mix instead of fresh fruit. Stick to breakfast and happy hour here and come early for ocean side seating.

Terrible food. We went for lunch and had toast with both sides burnt, a burger charred on the outside and raw inside, wilted lettuce. No redeeming factors about this place because even the chips and salsa were disappointing. 0/10 would not recommend.

Good restaurant!!! It's a family restaurant not overcrowded. The prices for breakfast are cheap compared to restaurants in the area. Open air restaurant with a beautiful ocean view with a friendly "down-home restaurant" feeling.

This is a generous review because of the atmosphere. Good vibes and decent service right on the pool and ocean. Nice chill spot. Mac banana pancakes were just ok $11 The 5$ breakfast was decent but a little small I added the Portuguese sausage and it was 4 small slices ($4) but good.( $1 a half- bite hahaha) Kids breakfast was French toast for $5-- it was one slice of bread (tiny slice)!!??!! For real ? Bread is like $3 a loaf! The link sausage was another $4 A cup of watered down coffee with virtually zero flavor another $3.50 - Starbucks is half that price!! Don't bother coming here for breakfast. They give you "tourist" prices and tiny portions.

The best deal here is go between 5:30 and 6:30 for the half price dinner happy hour. We had the macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi for $13.00 instead of $26.00. The mixed green salad for $9.95 was a rip off as it was small and really just spring mix lettuce. The sides on the entree's and we had eaten here both during the happy hour and at normal priced dinner times and at both meals were very small. You get a ice cream scoop of rice or mashed potatoes and 2 spears of asparagus as a veggie. The bread is fantastic. Our first dinner here service was exceptional and our waiter really took care of us, which is why we returned for a happy hour cocktail and appetizers one day and a dinner the next. Service both at happy hour and the second dinner was fair to poor at best.

Visited here twice during our stay at SoK, after our first visit for drinks, we vowed never again! The bartender was tipsy and more concerned about serving the staff who just finished their shift then the guest. And when he wasn't serving them , they were helping themselves! I won't even go into how crappy the drinks were, Where's Bar Rescue when you need them! We tried again this morning for breakfast out of convenience, the waitress more then made up for our first visit. She was slammed but handle all well and the food was good! We returned later in the afternoon for a drink, there she was, doing it all. Mixed the same drinks we ordered on the previous visit perfectly! I wish we would have gotten her name as she was awesome and totally redeemed this place. Oh and by the way.. The other bartender was arriving for his afternoon shift and we got the hell out of there!

So bad service and bad food should tell you to stay away but it sure is easy to get to if your walking from the next door condo but this place is so bad have to say tourist be cautious. May get food poisoning. The bartender can't even smile as he collects for the drink. Pretty sad they have a chance to kick ass with such a captive audience but it's a car wreck. Even had the thrill of seeing employees about to duke it out over getting us silverware. Do yourself a favor and go to dollys across the street. At least the food was great.

Had a last minute meal instead of cooking in condo. We split two of their main dishes that were good. Waiter of 30 years..Jeff was very helpful and enjoyable. Breakfast is great there too.

  • Richard R.

We went for happy hour and the beer was great although they were out of IPA. We also ordered lava flows and two virgin lava flows. The regular lava flows were $4.00 during happy hour but the virgin ones were $8.00. I told them that the virgin ones are cheaper to make what's the deal? They told me that happy hour pricing was not for kids!! We were also not told that they are twice as much when we ordered our drinks. No apologies. Don't waste your time and beware of undisclosed pricing.

JULY 2015 - This place is GONE! It has been replaced with a new restaurant with a limited menu selection and uncomfortable seating. I'm devastated - the former restaurant will be sorely missed!!!!!! [[[[JULY 2014: I can't get enough of this place!!! Jeff's homemade bread is incredible!! ((They don't have that bread every night-call and ask first. It's that good.)) Eliana is the best server I've had there! It's open air with a roof over you-it looks out over the pool right to the ocean! You HAVE to come for the half price early bird special (5:30-6:30pm) and the $5 breakfast special (7:30-8:30am)!!! You can see the sunset if you hang around long enough after the early bird special! The banana chicken and macadamia nut crusted mahi are incredible-and the sauces that come with them are exquisite!!! GO! ]]]]]

Don't waste your time , poor quality food and even worse service . you would expect a higher end resort establishments to have people trained in customer service . the bar tender needs to stay behind the bar and not serve the dinner guests no skills what so ever . Do your self a favor and walk across the street to Dollies where you will get a quality meal at a much more reasonable price and great customer service

When you stay at the Sands of Kahana, you will almost certainly throw yourself into the Sands of Kahana Terrace Restaurant. The best time is happy hour, 3-5pm, draft beer @$3.00 and selected wines and mixed drinks at $4.00. Unfortunately you can only drink in the bar area, last time I was here I'd get drinks and enjoy them by the pool - no more! I found the bartenders to be surly, and not overly friendly, aside from 'Dino,' who was plenty nice with a great personality. The food piece of the Terrace is dead average, with SLOW service. I got some nachos on this trip and they were horrible! Cheese out of a can poured over greasy chips, with salsa and green chillies, C-. I did talk with someone who said breakfast was OK, for what that is worth. All that said, consider drinks at happy hour, but eat at your own risk, knowing slow service and average food is likely what you are looking at. Wish I had better news to report.

Stopped by today on our way back from the beach. We saw the road sign and popped in. Easy finding a seat. Very friendly service. Cold beer on tap. Big screen TV for football viewing. Food was great. Our daughter loved her slider and fries. Hubby had BLT and I had fish and chips. Excellent meal and service. We'd come back!!

One thing we discovered about west Maui is that good food is hard to come by. Over-commercialized and over-priced tourist traps abound. We stayed at Sands of Kahana Resort and out of time for dinner on our first night we ate here. Totally awesome, service was great, ingredients fresh and cooked perfectly, it was easy to tell this restaurant puts time and effort into preparing their menu. I wanted to eat there again but the girls wanted to go into town, next review... Aloha!

We stayed at the Sands od Kahana and had been here 5 years ago. We remembered that the happy hour was awesome for the area. We flew in and went right to happy hour to figure out what was next for us for the week. We were not greeted by the waitress that walked right past us, when we asked where we could sit for happy hour she said anywhere. We selected a table and ordered two drinks, a lava flow and a Mai tai and nachos. The drinks came out and were okay, did not taste like alcohol and were very weak. The nachos came out and we both laughed!!! A SMALL plate of stale chips, with raw onions, canned salsa and cheese out of a can with a few chopped fresh tomatoes. The taste was probably one of the worst things we have ever eaten! We ate very little as this was the start of the vacation and didn't want to spend it sick! Our waitress was not very attentive, did not ask how the food or drinks were. The place maybe had 10 people in it so not busy at all! It took her 10 minutes to give us the check and another 10 minutes to run the credit card. It is too bad, we would have made this a regular stop every day we were in the area if it had good quality food. We walked away saying this needed one of the restaurant rescue shows to come and help it!

Service was good, fish tacos were really good! The kids were able to get chicken with no breading, fruit cups and a carrot side. This made them and me happy!!

  • Ary K.

Rudest waitress ever. Had a huge attitude the entire time and took forever. We ended up being late for our activities because she took so long. The food was ok but not worth the price. The only nice thing is the view.

The food was cold it did have decent Flavor. The service was something of a disaster, they need more help

Fantastic prices and pretty decent food. I definitely recommend taking advantage of their Happy Hour, breakfast specials and kids eat free deals. While I think the staff does a good job -- I think the management needs to hire at least one more server, if not two. The wait staff works very hard with a great attitude but I know how hard it is taking care of 8+ tables.

Great food and view to the ocean! Prices are super cheap compared to restaurants in West Maui. Definitely recommend it! Great service and no waiting time to be seated :).

Just bought a vacation condo in Kahana near the Kahana Sands. Decided to walk and have lunch here. Honestly, it was fine! Love the fact that it's local and isn't real busy. Setting is great! Lunch was fine and the prices are good. Reading the reviews, not sure what people were expecting? Want a fine doing experience, go to Kapalua or Kaanapaili- this is a good, solid place to grab a bite and the service was fine.

Just had a wonderful dinner! Not sure about reviews but we had the macadamia nut fish and it was excellent. Cooked to perfection!! Clay the bartender is awesome, please give this place a try.

The food was average as we ordered simple sandwiches and nachos that are pretty difficult to mess up. The service was TERRIBLE. Do not go here if you have any time constraints. It took a lifetime to get our check, the waitress never inquired as to how our meals were and she at one point was at the bar making drinks while the bartender just stood there.

    (2)
  • Sarah L.

Went there for happy hour. First off bartender was extremely rude (great first impression...) then the service was poor and drinks were very watered down and barely any alcohol at all.... Would never go back

  • Kyle D.

First, they do have a cheap breakfast special from 7:30-8:30, so if money is tight, give it a try. There is a view of the beach and you will be overlooking the pool. One drawback of that is when you get kids swimming by, you may get splashed upon. The service is very friendly and efficient. Overall I enjoyed the experience, but the food is the reason for the two stars. Coffee was the weakest I've had in years. It reminded me of Minnesota church coffee. The breakfasts were heavy on grease, light on taste. Lots of bacon, which is normally good, however, this bacon lacked flavor, which I would think to be impossible. The toast was just shy of being made into croutons. Lastly, there was a small hair in my eggs. On the plus side, they do have plenty of condiments on the table to doctor up your breakfast.

  • Rachel S.

Only here for happy hour and didn't get to try the food but it was great. Bartender was extremely friendly and staff seemed happy despite it being a resort full of some pretty demanding people. Make sure you come during happy hour since the drinks and food can add up quickly otherwise.

Solid Average in all ways... average service, average food and average prices overall.

  • Rourke M.

Only ventured here for dinner because it fell within walking distance. The $11 tropical drinks here were weaker than a pack of Kool-Aid in the ocean. If you were to order one drink after another here, one of two scenarios is certain to occur before you could expect a buzz from these syrupy concoctions : 1) You develop Type 2 diabetes from the sugar content 2) You go bankrupt Frightened of both of these fates, I ordered a draft beer and [mistakenly] some fish tacos. The tacos were bland and the beer was forgotten by the used car salesman who served us. I'll take the car next time.

Poor drinks for happy hour. Really bad drinks. and the atmosphere has so much promise, but it was all wrong. The service will it is the island, but it was so so so so slow. anyway we did not go back. The food was mediocre at best.

This place gets a two star...at best! There was nothing special about the food at all and the food was a little too pricey. They do offer two daily specials, however, if you don't mind getting up really early on your vacation, then you'll enjoy it. The specials aren't the greatest selection and you'll miss it if you sleep from 6:30- 8:30am. To top it off, the flies that I had to endure while we waited for our food was NOT good. So if we are in need of a "close to home" breakfast, this place will not be on our list. Sorry, I've had better. Your friend, OB

Happy hour 3-5 but sign says fri 4:30-7. Apparently there is music at that time. No sign to show when happy hours are.

I have been eating here since I was a kid over 20 years and we have had countless memorable meals and servers over the years. What used to be excellent value and a great hidden little gem inside the sands of kahana resort this place has definitely reached it's bottom. The downward trend started 4-5 years ago and while the food is still certainly palatable and even good at times the service is simply atrocious. The staff really genuinely don't seem to care about you or your food seeming completely distracted and disinterested. Two consecutive breakfasts there for us this week and both times they messed up at least 2 of 4 diner's meals. Beyond that we noticed all the others around us having similar problems. There are very few options for dining in Kahana these days and this used to provide good value and good food without going over to Roys and spending quite a bit more. If your going to go be prepared for poor un-friendly service

Happy hour is great but don't miss the Sunset Special 50% off entrees from 5:30 to 6:30 each night. The salmon is to die for , sunset is breathtaking and Mai Tais can't be beat!

    (4)
  • Amber E.

The restaurant is a laid-back, open air place with an old school Hawaii feel, overlooking the pool and beach . They have good happy hour specials nightly, and an early bird special (half off entrees 5:30-6:30) every night. I'd give the location, atmosphere, and happy hour a 4 or 5, but the food was really not that great, especially for the price - we tried the ahi, the macadamia nut encrusted ono and ono w/ grilled shrimp in garlic, and I'd say they were pretty solid average Service was spotty too (great one night; not the next). But I do like this place, hopefully, they'll put some emphasis into their food quality and service and be back up to 5 stars in no time!

I wish I could give a more thorough review but after waiting 40mins for a plate of fried rice and a breakfast skillet to come we had to leave. Hope that envelopes how disappointed we were. We opted for mcdonalds around the corner instead to make our event on time.

Great Value with a great view right on the ocean! This restaurant is located at the Sands of Kahana and each morning they offer a breakfast special for $3.99 from 7:30 am to 8:30 am. You can get two eggs, your choice of bacon or sausage links or Portuguese sausage along with potatoes. They also offer pancakes for the same price. We got there early and restaurant filled up fast, the food was fresh and tasted great along with great service. We would give the Sands a try again and try there happy hour or their early bird specials.

As a Television Producer I have had the best and worst of experiences and assisted Consumers who have had less than satisfactory service...... I HAVE NEVER been able to say "this is one place I wouldn't even send my worst enemy"! My first impression was BAD, as staff was rude and treated our party of 4, on our first day in Maui, like they were doing us a favor just to wait on us. understand "1st day" you are Happy and in a great mood.....life is great...you're in Maui! They caused us to wonder if this is the way everyone here is. YEP....everyone at this restaurant is! I think it is a requirement of Their employment to be ......RUDE, GRUMPY,and MISERABLE!!!! I believe everyone deserves a second chance......so I gave them one.....and THEY DIDNT disappoint their perfect record......THEY WERE EVEN WORSE...we waited 30 minutes before WE... finally approached the staff to remind them we were still waiting. The staff member shooed us off as if to say I'm too busy, don't talk to me! I said to the staff, you can listen and do your job at the same time, she assured they know we were waiting....with 3 open tables available... even. I wasn't even the only party being treated this way, the couple that got there10 min before us said, if they had a car, they wouldn't have waited. If you want a TRUELY awful. experience this is the perfect place to ruin your trip to Maui! the Manager Steve tops the list of people you don't want working for you! They give the Resort itself a bad name! The restaurant is independently owned, too bad, the Resort needs to take over as it brings down their guests experience!

Pleasantly surprised for a poolside bar & grill. Dinner seemed a little pricy, but we all ordered different entrees and the food was excellent. The service was also excellent and it was clear our waiter enjoys his job making the experience worth remembering.
