This has got to be the worst place to stay in Maui. The island itself has its beauty and is my favorite island, but if given the opportunity to come stay here free I wouldn't do it. The first thing that was a downer was NO air. 90 degree weather with 80% humidity is awful. The lay out of our room was terrible, and the smaller of our two rooms had a window that opened to the walkway, so we couldn't even get a cross breeze. The sliding doors to seperate the smaller room from the entryway and then the master room from the living room provide no privacy. If one actual door is opened, the sliding door makes a banging noise that alarms a person from sleep. Our very first full day in Maui, we left our room around 8am. We returned around 3pm to have our room door wide open, propped open with the door stop. Wtf?!?! We called the front desk and they had no answer as to why that would be or who accessed our room. We had left valuables and felt really uncomfortable not knowing. They sent security up and we signed a report. The management didn't apologize or let us know what had happened. We had to approach the front desk and they said it was maintenance checking the fire alarms. Sounded fishy and why wouldn't they have said that the day it happened?? Then 3 days into our 7 day stay there's a notice posted in the elevator that the main pool will be closed. Why werent we notified at check in? It was closed for the last 4 days of our stay. But as the front desk pointed out, at least there was the kid pool we would have access to (11" filled with kids pee - no thanks), or we had the whole swimming pool of an ocean out the back. But did I mention the beach access has tons of rocks you can get cut on? We will not EVER be back and I don't think people should frequent this location. The two bedroom will NOT work for 2 couples. Oh and the bugs that are in the room that made it so we couldn't leave food out. It was gross. Who knows where they came from, but it disgusted us. :( EPIC FAIL!!!!!!

((((This is a review from last June, 2011, when my family and I stayed here for a week. I feel it's due time that I put out my two cents)))) Pros and cons PROS: -Pristine location and 3-bedroom suite was clean, had everything (including washer/dryer and big kitchen with MASSIVE storage), and bright views (almost except for one of the four buildings in SOK) of Molokai. -great beach, plenty of lounge chairs, warm water (yes, it's Hawaii) -Nice pool (not a bad size, but not monster size Hyatt status though) and jacuzzi -happy hour by the pool -nice stainless steel common area barbecues -travel concierge knew her stuff and pointed us out to all kinds of great stuff in Maui to do, even a nice luau! (Drums of the Pacific by the Hyatt was a heck of a Luau, good food and performance as well, made out to be a really nice birthday dinner for me:D) -short walk to a shopping center for smaller stuff, and short drive to inner Lahaina where the mall and good shopping is -tucked away just below or off the main Hwy 30 so didn't hear much noise -No AC that of which was just fine because a good cross-breeze is all you need with the windows open -Good food at the hotel restaurant, a bit slow and pricey though. CONS: -Frickin noisy housekeeping crew. Sure I know they're doing their job but don't shove it down our ears. The tile flooring in the atriums are what help cause their carts to echo throughout, as early as 7am :-/. WE'RE ON VACATION, HELLO? -Elevators were snail-paced, almost got stuck on one (it had a full load of people). But no matter, I was only on the 3rd floor. -Workout room was a joke. Was able to use it, but c'mon! Barely functioning/faulty machinery? Did no justice! -They say there's WI-FI access throughout. BULLS**T there ain't! There's only an ethernet cable per suite. You have to go down to the front desk area and sit practically behind this computer desk area to get wifi signal and appear to others as if you work there! Kinda silly. -Parents, who booked this, had me and my sibs sitting in the back of a cramped and loaded minivan for a half hour while they had to put up with a snot nose dips**t concierge with major attitude while sorting out a mix up with booking (NO SURPRISE). The others were nice and helpful though. -Suites were kind of outdated all around and furniture was...meh I've had better. Kitchen was enormous for a timeshare/condo hotel though! Partition/pocket doors on one of the bathrooms don't lock! Fix That! OVERALL: A great place for your money, despite the fact the drawbacks could make you wish you stayed elsewhere. On a scale of good and bad, the cons were small potatoes compared to my very first experience of Hawaii I had overall! If they could address the drawbacks, heck yeah I'd come back on my own time! But seriously, NO WIFI throughout?!?!?!? Whatever, enjoy Hawaii for what it is! :D

Came here 29 years ago for our honeymoon.. Been back many times since and now own two weeks. Hasn't really changed. ... which means some challenges... but love mostly that it is just Simple condo with one of largest sq feet rooms and lanai in Maui. All 3 bedrooms have beautiful ocean views. It is basically just a layed back and semi private resort. Quaint beach, simple pool and restaurant . Bbq at night watching sunsets and meeting new people is my favorite part. If you need viking appliances, people everywhere...a/c vs ocean breezes, and limited views go somewhere else. Leave the rooms open for me and our friends.

My wife, daughter and I were more than impressed when we stepped foot into the 2 bedroom condo with floor to ceiling windows. The place was HUGE. Could easily house 6 people comfortably. Beautiful grounds, fun people. Strip mall w liquor store, boutique and one of the many legendary Boss Frogs, where u can set up any activity, rent snorkel and SUP gear, score the latest Reef sandals and even rent your clubs for golfing, only $15. We had a blast. Definitely be back next year. Only problem is that cleaning only comes a couple times a week so plan accordingly.

Beds were a bit hard but view and accommodations very nice. There's wifi in each room, bluray/dvd player, a tv in each room and they provide an assortment of cooking utensils, silverware etc. Didn't go swimming at the nearby beach or pool but I'm sure it's nice as well. I spent more time at the gym, there 6 cardio machines and weight lifting machines, 2 water coolers with cups provided and a yoga mat. **If you have kids** Daily koi feeding near the front desk at 4pm, except on Thursdays. It's the same time as check in so kill some time waiting there.

Update: The next morning without contacting them again housekeeping came on their own and brought my clothes to my room..... #1 if you thought it was garbage, why did you still have them? #2 if you didn't know whether it was garbage or not....why would you take them?! Moving forward, me and a friend went to rent a paddle board around 930AM on Sunday morning, the kid at the front laughed and called over his coworker and she said oh. They're all rented right now.....we have boards but no paddles.....uh what!? So we asked to rent it once it was returned....& she said the currents gonna get stronger you don't wanna do it. It sounded like a bunch of excuses for her not to rent to us. On top of that she gave attitude the whole time.....the boy asked us where we were from and we said the Bay Area....he replies with oh I hate you I'm from Southern California....like is that supposed to be funny?! I've come to terms that the entire staff of this resort is unprofessional and down right rude.

The reason for two stars, our room was dirty on arrival, I had to wash our sheets because of the musty old smell and when I took the mattress cover off the mattress to wash the mattress was old, stained and just nasty. The waitresses and bartenders were rude. Found out from management they will be replacing all restaurant staff due to mismanagement , that was a positive. The condo that we are staying in, building 2, level 8, Needs updating, fresh paint would really be nice or just wash down the walls and doors so you are not touching somebody else dirt. Would I come back, probably not here. There are many other places to stay , nicer, friendlier and " Cleaner". Rented this unit from the "SULLIVAN PROPERTIES" this is not part of a time-share so we paid a lot for what we got. The views where awesome however, everything else was mediocre.

My family of 6 stayed here for a week. The place is beautiful and right off the beach. Our place came with a full equipped kitchen where we were able to cook every day. The reason why I gave it four stars is because there is NO AIR CONDITION at this Resort and they were using the guests elevator as the service elevator! There is only 1 elevator in each building! this means the elevator was use for garbage dispense workers to ride. You could smell it on the elevator sometimes.

  • Shelley C.

Great view, large rooms (a little dated), great access to the pool and the ocean. I really wish that we had asked if they had air conditioning. It was unusually hot the week we came so sleeping was difficult. It is pretty noisy since all the windows are open all the time. The staff was very friendly. WiFi signal is weak unless you sit in the living room.

The resort I'd beautiful and seemed to be well maintained. We had a corner unit bldg 2 second floor with ocean front and awesome views. Note the elevator is very slow and there is no a/c. Very hot and humid the week we stayed with no trade winds. Staff is friendly and helpful. It was disappointing the bar closed at 9 pm. There are two pools but it seemed all the kids were in the adult pool and not in the kids pool where they belonged. Lots of close restaurants and stores nearby. The windows do not open all the way which would have helped with the heat.

My family and I have stayed here several times. Overall, it is a great location. A great place for families to stay as there is a great view, nice beach, pool, grills and it is close to lahina and napili. The elevators are slow and parking spaces small-but these aren't things that make or break most vacations. There is a new, far too expensive restaurant on site, but many great places nearby. The variances between the rooms are due largely to different owners. Some are privately owned, some are time shares...you need to look at your agreement to learn about how often/what services housekeeping will be doing and for what you are responsible. Also, different owners update their units more often than others and have nicer/bigger/more tv's.

My family stayed at Sands of Kahana for a week through our timeshare and we were all very happy with trip. The kids pool is awesome. Our 1 bedroom unit was huge, clean, well equipped, and a sizeable lanai. Air conditioning would have been good but we had an end unit right near the putting green and the breeze was amazing. We were impressed that they clean the grills EVERY DAY. The beach was a quick walk and was nice. A few large rocks to look out for but pretty calm waves. Highly recommend booking excursions through the Expedia desk onsite. We didn't do any of the activities or eat in the restaurant and still thought it was an awesome facility.

We loved the place. We used San Francisco exchange company to trade our Tahoe week for a two bedroom at Sands of Kahana. Just got back last night from our week in Maui and could not be happier with the accommodations. The 6th floor, two bedroom unit was HUGE and modern. The View was awesome. The grounds were immaculate and well groomed. The onsite restaurant was very good and not too pricey. Great places to eat and shop just across the street. Would love to come back to this place!!

Worst place ever to stay! Beds were so old that my partner I had to go to a local chiropractor to get our backs adjusted. The dark completed male manager at the front (there is only one) was especially rude. He wasn't friendly or accommodating when we said we would like a different room since it was adjacent to the garbage bin. There is no air conditioning and the bathrooms had a moldy smell. You have been warned.

Our boys would give it a 5 star because of the koi pond, golf, tennis and that its next to the beach. The service was excellent but It needs to get a makeover to get 5 stars.

Stayed there for seven days. Not a bad place. Laid-back, great views, staff is terrific and very friendly. The condos are clean and pretty well kept up, but the place is clearly aging. Mattresses are really uncomfortable though. Oh, if you're younger than 40, don't expect to find much to do except sit by the beach or pool. Mostly older crowd here. Avoid the restaurant by the pool too, it's terrible.

Upon arrival, everything seemed great. The staff was very accommodating at check in. We got into our room and it was clean. There is a beach, although small, right on site. Later on that day, we did notice that one of our ceiling fans wasn't working. It happened to be in the bedroom, so it was miserably stuffy in our room. When we opened the door, we discovered that we were right above their "engineering" section, so they constantly had drills and all sorts of noise going on. We opened the blinds and half of them fell off. We also had a variety of little ants crawling across the counter the entire time we were there. Then about halfway through our stay here, we discovered a cockroach in our living room. My husband killed it, then proceeded to call the front desk to inform them. All they could offer was pest control or moving us to a different room with views of the parking lot (from our ocean view room). We decided at that point it was late, it seemed to be an isolated incident, we'd stay in our room and they could send pest control. The next morning, we found two more cockroaches, one being IN OUR BED. We called down again, stated we'd like to move rooms to whatever they have available at this point. The lady at the front desk requested to call us back. She called us back, asked how many people were in our room, then asked to call back again. Twenty minutes later, all of our stuff was packed and we still hadn't heard anything about a new room. My husband walked down to the front desk and was told that they "hadn't found a room yet" and to stay put. At this point, they'd been aware of the situation for over three hours, not including the overnight part. The service here is horrendous, the front desk staff is lazy. We got a deal on this room as a wedding gift from a family member and it has by far been my worst experience with accommodations ever. we will NEVER stay here again.

Sooooo I've stayed at a couple resorts and hotels. I'm not hotel snob by any stretch of the imagination but I will say that I know a dump when I'm in one and this place is that. This place is a dump. -We had the penthouse on the 8th floor and the elevator was out the first 2days when we arrived. That's a lot of stairs. -Their key maker was broken so they couldn't provide us with keys on the first night. -The toilet backed up and leaked toilet water all over the floor and backed up into the shower drain! On the second night. I've never backed up any toilet! Ever! -When I tried to open blinds the whole fixture came crashing down. It seems like all that was holding it was some kind of weak adhesive. -No AC... I'm not from a place that has this type of humidity so this fact made it super fantastic. The main windows wouldn't even open all the way so couldn't get a cross breeze to compensate for not having central air! They were bolted shut BTW. -The furniture is(as other reviews have stated)really bad. Like 1980s I'm at my grandparents house, whoa they have plastic furniture bad. Basically I was not impressed. I'm easily impressed too. Doesn't take much. However, this was essentially a free trip so I went along for the ride. But had it been up to me and had I researched other hotels I would've stayed elsewhere with some semblance of luxury. If you don't want to have the hotel be the mediocre part of your vacay, I recommend staying in nicer digs.

July 2013 - back again. My feelings on this property remain similar to my last review; pros; - Dig the chill vibe, this does not feel like a crazy tourist place - They do a nice job to keep the property clean and well maintained, you always see people working to maintain the buildings and grounds. - Still amazed that they clean the BBQ grills to perfection every morning - Lots of little things for my girls to do (lei making, hula dancing, coconut painting) - New workout facility in building #2 - all new equipment, BRAVO! - Wireless throughout the condo - Newer flat screen televisions - My room had a great view #383 cons: - Room decor is outdated, but could be seen as part of the charm - I don't know? - Elevator is SUPER slow - but you need to switch your brain into vacation mode and get over the wait - better yet, take the stairs! - How slow is the elevator? We stayed on the 8th floor, for the most part I would take the stairs while my kids took the elevator, I was 22-5 against the elevator, and I was not hustling up the stairs, normal pace. - They could do sooo much more with the Sands of Kahana Terrace Restaurant, disappointed that this remains consistent. The longer you stay at the Sands of Kahana, the more the chill vibe and accommodations sneak up on you. At one point I was thinking I'd give my review 3 start, but I ended up at 4 stars. We had a great time and look forward to our next trip.

Loved this place. Hate to admit that the upgrade we had is bigger than our apartment. :( Lets get the downsides out of the way: Limited fitness center Slow elevators Pros: $5 brunch meals Sweet, spacious stay. Plenty of separate rooms in our condo, storage space if needed, updated kitchen and living room.

First off, let me answer some questions I had before coming here. Every 3 bedroom has an ocean view from at least one of the lanais. Second, the noise is highly overrated. There are clear signs saying quiet hours from 9-9. The trash truck, while loud, doesn't hit until after 9. The staff. What can I say except everyone was super nice. Use the Expedia concierge service. We booked 5 excursions and they even told us some things that we didn't know to ask. Nicole at the Expedia is one of the nicest people I have ever met. She helped our party of six figure out what days to do what even though some of them had less people going. The front desk was exceptional. From check in throughout our stay they were very accommodating. We are in the middle of buying a home and needed loan docs to be signed. They printed them out for us and offered to fax them to the mainland free. The accommodations. The grounds were in great shape, the room was immaculate, and the beach was great (duh). As I write this it is our last night here and I am sad to be leaving. Even though we aren't owners here, they truly made us feel like family. Mahalo Sands of Kahana!

Arrived yesterday and our unit had a water leak in master bath. The vanity was leaking from within the wall, the toilet made high pitch squeals and was leaking. When calling the front desk, the phone crackled so loud, both parties could not hear. No one answered the phone at front desk from midnight to 5:30am when we were up trying to call and report the issue. Then when we go down there at 6am, the clerk said we were lying and the phone had not rung all night. Did not want to move us and told us "you have a second bathroom". Maintenance said the wall has to be ripped out to make repair and there is evidence it has been leaking for awhile. What a great way to treat the visitor due to your deferred maintenance of the unit.

Staff was very nice at checkin and checkout. We arrived late in the night and stayed in room 211. The condo was a one bedroom very spacious and had everything you would need. They even provided laundry detergeant to wash your clothes. The beach was nice but the tide comes in early. Didnt use the pool but other guest's did as it seemed to be full everyday. The restaurant was closed while we were there:( so there is no way of getting a drink or a bite to eat unless you go acoss the street. The food there was ehh. I give them 2 stars for two reasons. 1.) there is NO AC in the units. I stayed June 28-July 5, 2015, and it was HOT and HUMID. Yes you are right on the beach but there was a LACK of ocean breeze. If this place had AC, i would stay here again but would request a different unit. 2.) We stayed in room 211 that is at the end of building 2 right next to the street and maintance shop. The employees were very loud early in the morning. We are on vacation on occasionally like to sleep in until 8AM. I did not complain because the resort seemed to be full and would not like to bother anyone.

OMG !!!! What an absolutely WONDERFUL trip we had! 12 - YES 12 women traveled from So. Calif. to Maui last September 2013, and we stayed at the Sands of Kahana. Our ocean view condo was amazing, spacious, meticulously clean, 100% comfortable, in working condition and fully stocked with linens, towels, kitchen appliances, washer & dryer. We brought a few air mattresses (just in case) and between all of us being the best of friends, we made it work for the entire week. Parking was great, slim stalls, but never had any issues finding a place to park no matter when we found our way back home. Pool area was always clean, Clay at the Bar was friendly, fun and most helpful at giving us some great tips for food and entertainment. Beach was not crowded, warm water and great for sunbathing, snorkeling, swimming. Made some friends along the way who were also staying there. Have absolutely NO complaints about this place. Felt SAFE the whole time we were there and comfortable. Not sure if our unit had Air because we never needed it or thought about it. Kept the sliders open 24/7 and it was gorgeous. Liked it so much I booked our family vacation for this year with a unit at Sands of Kahana that is privately owned and rented out. Cannot wait to bring my family this year and share the fun. If you are looking for a fancy-schmancy hotel atmosphere, this is not it, but if you want clean, comfortable, away from the crowds, you can't go wrong.

Sands of Kahana unit #283. Unit was VERY DIRTY. I read similar reviews with this statement but assumed this had been taken care of, it has NOT. Broken toilet tank cover in master bath, sticky counter tops, dirty dishes put away in cabinets, oily shelves in cupboards, dirty floors, broken appliances (3 toasters, only one heated up but did not release toast) bent, mix matched cookware, broken clock (not only did not work but it was chipped/cracked then hung up). Trash can had gooey black stuff in the bottom covered with a new trash bag, Sand left in the bottom of the hamper, food in bottom of kitchen drawers, Walls looked like someone sneezed on them, it was really bad. Shelves were never dusted, we found room keys from former guests of the room caked with dirt and grime. Luckily they no longer worked. Dishwasher racks so rusted it would be unsafe to use (rust is not from the sea air but lack of maintenance, same thing happens in Arizona) Paint peeling from the ceiling. Black mold on doors of the refrigerator. The list goes on and on. My last straw was when I noticed the kitchen faucet was broken and "fixed" with a bandaid. Really?!? A bandaid. That is just gross. Kitchen was missing basic utensils to make simple things like eggs or pancakes. Unless you wanted to use the BBQ tools on the already severely scratched up non-stick pan. The couches were comfortable. We emailed our concerns to the property management company, "Sullivan Properties", they thanked us for being their eyes and that was it. They knew of the problems but repair person didn't have time yet to get to them. They did however, send someone with a handful of basic kitchen utensils. It was greatly appreciated. She asked if there was anything else? We handed her one of the broken 3 broken toasters. She left. Every day something else was discovered to be broken or filthy. I am so disappointed I booked this place. The other places I have stayed on this beach have always exceeded my expectations. Other management companies I have booked with truly cared about my experience. I paid a cleaning fee and fee to cover broken/damage items, as did all of the guests here before me. I did not get what I paid for. Cleaning fee for this unit is "built in" therefore I could not request a refund. I paid $3883 for 9 nights, I feel that the unit should at least be clean. Broken floor fan should have been replaced. It would have been nice on hot afternoons without ac. Overall, building is is sad shape. The water was shut off one afternoon, we had just planned to be gone at that time. The repair people are hard at work, jack hammers and pounding all day long. They commented how lucky we were that the elevator was working this week, it usually was broken. The sudden drop the elevator makes was funny for the younger adults, the lady on my elevator with the heart condition was not amused. I can't even imagine hauling luggage, cases of water, groceries, beach gear etc...up 8 floors. It was sad to see that a great unit like this has been I have stayed in 3 of the 5 buildings on Kahana Beach. The grounds of this resort are nice, the beach is clean and uncrowded. The whales and turtles did not disappoint, we saw them everyday.

It is not the Sands of Kahana but the Sounds of Kahana. I just stayed here six nights and didn't really sleep good any of the nights due to the noise that travels into your room from the breezeway. This is just a poor design of the building. I was awaken every morning at 6am by a screaming child next door that sounded like he was in my own room. If you want to sleep good this is not the place to go. On the positive the property and beach are really nice and location is great. Like one of the other reviewers posted it is not touristy feeling. Snorkeling right off the beach is good and you will see turtles. The rooms are clean and large. If you are just using the master bedroom on the two bedroom unit you will not have the noise issues but the second bedroom that is on the inside is noise central. I feel a little robbed of my vacation due to lack of sleep. We are moving to the big island today and hopefully we will be able to sleep there. Rent the standing board for your older kids. It was a hit for all day and was easy to do.

    (3)
  • Judy A.

This place is on the beach but that's about it. The second bedroom has no window for ventilation. There is no air and 3 fans. It is very loud in the hall way all night and the workers start showing up at 6:30 banging doors and moving things. The trash trunk shows up at 7:00 making all kinds of noise. Yesterday we saw 4 car loads of people (locals) getting in their cars after a day of swimming. They even brought their floats. Now we know why the pool is so crowded. No lock for pool gate and no one cares who goes in. If I was a local I would come here to with 5 kids.

Just finished a good week at sands of kahana and really enjoyed it. The condos are located very close to the beach, mine included a beautiful ocean view. (Building 2, 4th floor). There are tennis courts, two small gyms, and great access to the beach. The beach is clean and there is always seating available in the grass area and is not over crowded. It's true the condos do not have air conditioning which can make for some pretty stuffy dinners with your family. The staff is friendly and always working hard to maintain everything and looking clean. I wish the sands of kahana restaurant were better. I didn't try the food because it did not look appetizing. Their beer selection is also bad (I'd suggest you go to maui brewing co. instead). I did have their fruit smoothie which was good but too small for $6.95. Their Mai Tais were inconsistent.

Ok, update: they have painted the interiors of the condos and it is a marked improvement. Plus there are new appliances (washer/dryer, oven, fridge, dishwasher). Wifi is free and wicked fast. I still love going to The Sands. The people who all work there are top notch and wonderfully friendly, courteous and helpful. There are still some improvements that need to be done: curtains or roller shades on windows instead of the vertical blinds that have seen better days, shower heads that adjust, updated decor. Nothing major. Every year we see improvements which is good. My main gripes are: slow elevator, super echo quality from interior of the buildings that amplify sounds. I still love this place. Great staff, beautiful grounds, wonderful beach, decent restaurant, comfortable beds, free and FAST WiFi, exemplary views, in room washer/dryer with detergent. .

The kiddie pool is amazing never an issue even if you're not staying there. Koi fish pond that blows my mind. Crab leg specials and mind numbing views of the ocean. What else do you need. Bring the kids to the kiddie pool/hot and soak your silly ass while the kids frolic masterfully. Enjoy

Do not buy here. My parents are original owners and this property and staff have gone downhill. We are currently staying here with our young children and a notice was just posted that they will be making federal mandated repairs to the pool that will cause it to be out of commission for 4 days of our 7 day trip. Owners were only notified 2 months ago, we booked this trip a year ago and had airfare 3 months ago. When I approached the manager, Jim Musit, to complain he told me he cannot compensate us in anyway. This is ridiculous considering they give free luaus and snorkel trips out all day long. When I mentioned I would be giving a negative review, he stated "I'm used to it." Not what you want from someone managing a Hawaiian Resort. The most frustrating part is they have known about the federal mandate for a year (per one staff member). I promise you'll be much happier purchasing/staying somewhere else.

This is our third time staying at Sands of Kahana over the past 6 years, and we've loved it every time. It has a laid-back casual feel, unlike the huge resorts, very comfortable and family friendly. The rooms are all very spacious, most with beautiful ocean views, and many of them with sliding door to the master bedroom, which opens to make a very large living room area. We also like the vibe in Kahana, beautiful, but laid back, and very close to lots of beautiful uncrowded beaches. This year there were lots of sea turtles in the area, too! There's a simple pool and jacuzzi in front. On the other side is a grassy lawn w/ lounge chairs and equipment rentals for the beach, and a kiddie pool w/ little palapa w/ water spraying down, in back. Overlooking the pool and beach is a casual restaurant w/ happy hour specials nightly, live music, and an early bird special (half off entrees 5:30-6:30) every night Activities: there are several activities each weekday, and all of them are still FREE, which is very unique among timeshares. We took part in the hula contest, lei making (with beautiful real flowers), postcard making, mini golf tournament sandcastle building (showed up, but this one didn't happen), and free social of hamburgers, fixings and Maui mimosas (pineapple juice w/ splash of champagne). Stopped by the hula lesson, and they even had grass skirts and leis which made for fun photo opps. The rooms have a variety of layouts, sizes and views. We have had HUGE 2-bdrm rooms w/ gorgeous ocean views in the past. This year, we got a 2 bedroom loft unit in Building 4, #461. It was a large, beautiful 2-story unit, w/ huge panels of windows on high sloped ceiling and wood on the ceiling matching the kitchen cabinets. It had a semi-obstructed ocean view from the patio. The only real downside for us was that it was a loft -- there was no door to shut for the master bed upstairs, so light and sound carried right upstairs. Overall, we had a great time on Maui and at SOK, and weren't ready to leave when our week was up; next time, we'll have to try to stay longer, and would love another stay at the Sands of Kahana.

Happy Hour Bargains! Strong drinks, low prices. Ocean view deck. Bar hangs over swimming pool. Bikini's and bare feet OK.

Recently stayed at Sands of Kahana for the second time while vacationing in Maui. Perfect location- right on the beach and there are several nearby amenities within walking distance. The condos are well taken care of, friendly staff, the Sands restaurant has $5 breakfast in the morning( can't beat that!). I look forward to staying there again :)!

My husband & I recently celebrated our 18th anniversary @ The Sands of Kahana. We had an amazing 8 days in Maui EXCEPT for our experience with the STAFF @ The Sands of Kahana. I do not expect 5 star service, I actually prefer a more casual experience. But the staff at The Sands of Kahana were INCOMPETENT & UNABLE to CLEARLY COMMUNICATE on SO many levels!! Adding 1 more day to a 1 week vacation should not be so complicated. Not only did we have to pack up & change rooms, they made us feel like we were lucky to be stuffed in a crappy bottom floor corner w a view of the outdated pool bar (PS...DO NOT eat there unless you like orange cheese sauce, YUCK!!). Clearly a downgrade. All that said, I could have lived with the shuffle around (& actually been happy...it is Maui, right!!!) ...IF it just would have been CLEARLY COMMUNICATED from the beginning!! Instead, any time we tried to check on the status (this includes months & weeks & days before our arrival) we were told that we should check back later. Then, upon check in & every few days we tried to get a straight answer....only to be told by the same incompetent staff, that we should check back later! PLEASE hire some competent staff!!

Admittedly, I have a total love hate relationship with the place. The location is great, the staff is very nice, the rooms are huge, and the lighted tennis courts fabulous. Plus, since my family is part of the timeshare, it is very affordable. The hate...some of the units are in much better shape than others--we asked and did get moved from a run down one--and most of the furniture is very, very eighties Hawaii. The worst are the old looking bath towels, the scratchy sheets that don't completely cover the mattresses, and the nasty old bedspreads. If they would just upgrade the bedding and a few other things it would completely change this place.

Stayed here for 5 nights with my husband and another couple. We booked it through Tim at Sullivan Properties. When we got there-our corner ocean front room had been changed but was changed to a room just the same. Tim called later to make sure it was ok for us. The view was beautiful and the condo itself was nice. Sure not everything was up to date but it was very nicely furnished and clean. Pool and hot tub were great as well as the breakfast downstairs. Happy hour wasn't so bad either. :) One complaint is that the location of where the condos are is very windy. Even just down the road-the waters were more calm and much less wind. Just bring a light sweater and that should suffice. Get a corner ocean view room if possible. The extra money is worth it!! Also if your looking for something to do while in Maui-go to Warren and Annabelle's Magic show! Its so worth it! Just check out reviews! Was a highlight of our trip!!

My family & I could not say enough great things about our vacation (08/2014). Seriously: best getaway ever. Condo#337 had me wanting to quit my job, and retire within 5 minutes of arrival. Our group was 4 adults & 3 kids (6-8 years). We had plenty of space, and privacy from each other when desired. Likewise, the layout & furnishings worked great at meal times or when everyone wanted to chill on the patio to watch the waves and sunsets. Pros: - Unit was immaculate, and stocked beyond what is advertised. We wanted for nothing. Only had to go buy our groceries for a week. The kitchen is fully stocked (utensils, pots/pants, basic spices, etc), and allowed me to cook all three meals on any given day we opted to not eat out. The storage closet had various necessities (aloe gel, band aids, cleaning supplies, etc). We've stayed at a number of other VRBO properties advertised as fully stocked, and this one exceeded any other to which we've been. - A/C is available, but wasn't needed. We visited from California, so warmer temps didn't bother us. We spent the majority of our stay with the windows open to allow the breezes and wave sounds to flood the condo. - Our kids had fun trying out the boogie/body boards included in the stash of beach toys. - Sands of Kahana maintain their grounds immaculately. The pools/hot tub, the lawns, buildings, and the beach were free of trash, debris, etc. The kids' pool was a huge hit for kids and adults- kids were able to take a dip while we lounged in the adjoining spa with cocktails. The plant life was lush and helped the tropical feel while the walkways were kept open and unobstructed. - The beach is fabulous. Granted, it is a short distance from the edge of the lawn to the breaking of the waves. If one needs more beach space, one can easily swim or walk either direction and the width of the sand spreads out. There are also a number of acclaimed dive/snorkeling/surf beaches within 5-15 minutes drive of the place. We were able to snorkel, with three small kids, for 1-2 hours at a time without worry (we did use the boogie boards as floatables). It was great seeing the fish, octopus, and SEA TURTLES (seems everyone wants to see the turtles). - Sands of Kahana staff were pleasant, courteous and helpful in our dealings. Cons: - Within unit #337 I/we had none. We spoke to a family staying in one of the penthouses who were not anywhere near as enthralled with their accommodations. They seemed to echo what some have said of other units- run down, decrepit, maintenance issues, etc. I am quite sure this is a matter of selecting a condo not as well kept, or with owners not as caring as these. Ours was stellar. - Yes, the elevator is slow. You're on vacation in Hawaii, not rushing between meetings or late for cross fit class. Who cares? - We had to leave back to California. Can't wait to return ASAP.

Pretty expensive for mediocre food, And it wasn't even a large portion! Leaving here hungry, even though I cleaned my plate. The waitress seemed distracted, and got our orders wrong. $7.50 Bloody Mary's were a disappointment also.

Very spacious rooms, nice having a restaurant in the vicinity. However, kind of far from all the activities I wanted to do. Great if you want to relax, not so great if you wanna tour the island attractions.

Like this place, nice location, great Condo. We stayed at 292, 3 bedroom oceanfront penthouse. Just what we wanted. 5 of us had plenty of room, could get folks more in, but not much privacy except for the smaller bedroom without a view. Master bedroom is really part of livinging room, with large sliding panels the can close off the room. We booked through chase'n rainbows, they were very helpful and easy to work with.

We just finished a trip to Maui and stayed at the Sands of Kahana. It was a mixed experience. The beach is lovely and there is a lot going on in the area as far as places to eat, other beaches, stores, etc. our room was considered an "ocean view room" and had a really nice view of the ocean. I thought the happy hour bar was nice and the shrimp tacos were great. They have two pools and hot tubs and a number of gas bar b que grills that worked well. They also have a gym with some simple equipment. Our room had a cable for internet and there is one place on the property for wireless. This seems to be the windy side of the island. It is amazing the difference when you travel even a few miles away. The building needs an upgrade. Our dryer didn't work and the dishwasher leaked. The condo was sparsely supplied with kitchen utensils . The toilets had trouble and the furnishings were dated. the staff while friendly didn't seem to care that there were equipment problems. I guess they just manage the property and don't worry about issues inside a unit. We used our room as a place to sleep and spent most of the time away. With that attitude it worked fine. Next time we will stay on the south side of the island.

Realized that I spent a lot of time at this resort when I visited Maui back in December. This resort is in a great location because it sits right on the beach with plenty of units with Ocean Views. It has it's own poolside restaurant....great happy hour deals....free chaise loungers.....and beautiful sunsets. My favorite part ironically was the free Wi-Fi-...our resort across the street didn't have any....but the staff at the Sands doesn't care if your a guest or not....they will let you use the Wi-Fi for as long as you like. This was very important to me because when I would return from a long day of sightseeing and exploring the island and taking tons of photographs....it was great to be able to download them immediately to my Facebook page. The resort also has a fitness center.....a pool for the kids.....immaculate landscaping...a tennis court.....and a wonderful poolside outdoor lobby area with a KOI pond. So if your ever in Maui and looking for a nice place to just kick back in peace give the Sands of Kahana a look....and as always Eat, Drink, and be Merry my Friends!!!!

People who have any complaints about this place must be used to staying at the Ritz Carlton or something. Our family stayed in a 3BR, 2Bath oceanfront unit and we LOVED it. The staff was always very friendly and helpful. The restaurant/bar was conveniently located with great service and good food and drink. The location can't be beat, minutes from Napili, Lahaina, close to restaurants/shopping and just steps to the ocean. The property is pretty amazing. It's got a nice pool/jacuzzi, another kiddie pool/jacuzzi, tennis courts, basketball courts, a putting green, on site restaurant/bar, lots of parking, first rate BBQs on wonderful grassy knolls (The BBQs are thoroughly scrubbed EVERY day.), and you can rent all kinds of stuff to take out in the ocean (paddle boards, kayaks, snorkel gear...). Seriously, if I had to come up with some negatives I'd say the parking spaces are kinda tight and there's only one elevator, which didn't work for about a half a day during our week long stay. But I would DEFINITELY stay at the Sands of Kahana again-- happily!!

We love the Sands of Kahana this is our fourth time here. The only problem is a nasty desk clerk by the name of Deb, she is rude and not helpful. The restaurant has also changed hands and the food is not what it once was, the weekend bartender leaves much to be desired. The condos are lovely and the rest of the workers are wonderful, just a few bad eggs to spoil it

This was my first time staying at a condo while on vacation. Our plan was to save money by buying food and cooking and using the bbq's provided. Well, we pretty much ended up just eating breakfast at the condo. LOL First impression upon walking up to concierge....pretty decent. Friendly staff checked us in and gave us any information we needed to know. We found our room and the elevator takes FOREVER!!! No joke, it's faster to take the stairs. We got a one bedroom partial ocean view, which was all ocean view and side view of the next building. I was pretty pleased with that. The room was very outdated but big. The bed was probably my biggest complaint. It was so hard and the pillows were so firm and large. The sheets and comforter were a joke but we ended up not using them because it was so warm (July). Kitchen was fully stocked, which was nice. The pool area was nice and the pool wasn't cold. Bar and food service was nice and quick. Breakfast daily special of $3.99 but somehow got charged at check out for $24.99 for two of us??? Didn't bring it up but that was so not $3.99. We only ate there for breakfast once. We had family that got a 3 bedroom and that was SUPER SPACIOUS! Two level condo overlooking ocean. Couch was worse than ours though. Had this vinyl type material on it that was uncomfortable. Showers had a full length window in them with vertical blinds. Kinda weird, right? But apparently you can't see in to them, just out. Grounds were well kept, friendly staff, spacious condos, good food and nice beach in front. Probably won't stay here again, but okay price for what you get. (BUT look around b/c the three bedroom ended up being cheaper than our one bedroom.)

Staying here and read reviews that this place was terrible. It's not. Now it's not 5 star so know that going in. Her are some definite pluses. Rooms are very spacious and full of all your home appliances. I was told they were originally designed to be apartments. Friendly staff our dryer wasn't working. Called it in and fixed within 3 hours. We needed it being on a three week vacation with two kids. Nice beach but not big. Nice pool and restaurant area. My ten and five year old loved it. Good location right across from some retail and two markets no more than 5-10 min away. One thing I was concerned about was no AC but I'm a big guy and it was not a problem. The trade winds keep a breeze moving through the room and night time temp is around 73-72 which is what I sleep at any way. Overall great place, location, amenities for a family vacation. If your looking for the Ritz Carlton then go stay there I believe there is on on the island.

My brother in law's sister did not use their timeshare, so we stayed here for a few days. The area is kept clean and nicely landscaped. They have a nice pool in the middle which is in the shade in the morning and afternoon as the surrounding buildings keep it in the shade. Our room had a slight ocean view and the beach is close walking distance. Try to get a room with a view, but on the lower section. When your up near the top, you need to take all of your luggage up the elevator. I'd stay here again... see attached pics. Aloha.

The sands of kahana is a great place. For the price, it's one of my favorite places to stay on Maui. Rooms are very spacious and homely feeling, making it perfect for bigger groups staying with lots of family and friends. The layout is ideal and very open, with lots of windows bringing sunlight in, a good sized kitchen, and everything is really comfortable. Nice balcony/porch. It really feels like home on the island at this timeshare. My grandparents have had a timeshare here I would visit since I was a kid, and since I last went back everything stayed the same, which I love. It's a very laid back environment, that seems to only get loud on expected occasions during holidays. It's very peaceful. Some things I've noted people find to complain about; the furnishings are a little dated - in my opinion the fact that the hotel is staying the same and not always looking for things to change adds to the charm and maintains it's individuality, as everything just really seems to work. The elevator is little slow - yes this is true but honestly whenever I'm on the island I never really thought twice about the elevator speed.

Well maintained, well equipped, and friendly staff. We own a timeshare here and have stayed twice so far, both times getting a very nice 1 BR with kitchen and an ocean view. I'm an avid swimmer and find the pool larger than usual for this type of facility, good for lap swimming particularly early in the morning. The restaurant is quite good and there are other good places nearby. They have a nice sandy beach and waters clean and good for swimming. Great location close to both Kanapali and Kapalua with other excellent swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding sites a quick drive away. They have fun free activities like lei-making, hula dancing, ice cream social, BBQ, etc. Spectacular sunsets guaranteed every evening.

A family member owns a timeshare here and I have stayed a few times and it is a great place to stay. They keep everything very clean and tidy. There is a full kitchen, each room has a TV and AC. The 2 bedroom is larger then most 2 bedroom houses. We stayed in the 3 bedroom one year and it is enormous. At the time ('04) it was the largest Timeshare in all of the islands. We have always had a great ocean view and the only thing between our room and the beach is the great restaurant and pool area. My only complaints are that it is far from the airport and the elevators are slow moving. The staff is always helpful and willing to get you anything your room needs faster then the normal 'Aloha time'. If you get a chance to stay here, do it.

We went here in September 2008 so this review is a little late. The property is showing its age a little, but otherwise the rooms are clean and well kept. When we checked in there was a mix up in the rooms and we had to wait for 2 hours for our room to be cleaned. Before coming to the resort we had gone to the grocery store and had all our perishables in the trunk of the car. Unfortunately we couldn't put the food in the room so we had to use the refrigerator in the rec room. I wouldn't discourage anyone from staying here but next time I might try other options in the area just to see what's out there.

To all those negative reviews (on tripadvisor): It's not the Four Seasons but if that is what you expect than go there instead, pay the 5 star prices and stop complaining. We just got back from a one week stay at the Sands (timeshare) and had a wonderful time. Our 1 bedroom was huge and had 2 full bathrooms, a fully stocked kitchen with new appliances, very big and lovely living room and a nice bedroom VERY comfy king size bed. Everything was clean and well taken care of. Our view was mostly trees and a little slice of the ocean but we didn't mind, we still had breakfast on the lanai each morning. The pool was good sized, fun and refreshing. The restaurant was a little pricey but we didn't mind since it was so convenient, the staff was very friendly and the food was pretty damn good. (I recommend the fish sandwich, mmmmmmmm) 3$ Mai tais during happy hour (3-5). The outdoor grills are a nice touch and it was awesome cooking dinner while watching a beautiful sunset. The staff was informative and very friendly with good referals to dinner spots.. We had a backed up toilet and they sent someone up within 15 minutes and it was fixed in 5. I would definitely go back to SOK.
