A very good place for pasta that's able to accommodate a lot.

We just ate here and the food was excellent! My husband had the baked Penne Pasta with meat sauce he thought it was delicious. Puttanesca was as good as I've had at high end restaurants on the Mainland. My sister-In-law said her Lemon Chicken Piccata was fantastic. The garlic cheese bread is a must to compliment your dinner. Yes you order your meal when you walk in but is served to you at your table piping hot! I imagine the no frills keeps the prices down! This family owned restaurant has so many award plaques hanging on their wall and has been Zagat rated, Honestly those of you who gave this wonderful family owned and operated restaurant one and two stars I don't know understand why.

I'm not sure how it was for everyone else, but we should have listen to the other Yelp reviewers. We entered the place with only a small family outside. There was a guy lounging at the register with his feet kicked up watching TV. There was NO ONE ELSE there. Bad sign, when there are no other patrons in a restaurant during dinner time. We ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo and Chicken Parmesan. The Fettuccine Alfredo was bland. The basics in cooking from Chef Robert Irvine is the use of salt and pepper, neither was used to prepare either dishes. The Chicken Parmesan was also bland and tasteless. The spaghetti was overcooked and the sauce was watery. I think I used half the container of parmesan cheese from the shaker, but it did nothing to help the dish. Honestly, I wouldn't come back. It is relatively cheap food, but not good food.

Great food great service. Lots of stuff for vegans too!

We skeptically went in, it wasn't busy and it's quite quaint. We were absolutely blown away by the quality of the food. We shared a garlic cheese bread which was delicious. I had the pesto linguine and my husband had the chicken parmesan. They were both full of flavour and of very high quality. I definitely recommend this place, don't judge a book by its cover. Also there is parking out the front and across the road.

Dont waste your time here...many much much better restaurants in Maui...even within a block...sauce is so bland and watery...packed on salt and parm and it didn't even help and I piled it on. I had chicken parm (a fav of mine) and the bf had calamari pasta...both just bad and small portions both the pasta and proteins The ac was on 84 which made it uncomfortable as well

I wish this cute little café was in central Maui... ATMOSPHERE: Simple décor, big windows for lots of natural light and for people watching. You order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. Outdoor seating available. FOOD: Linguine Clam Sauce - This is my fave dish here. Done in a butter garlic broth that's very subtle in flavor. I know you're not supposed to put cheese on seafood dishes but it was in need of some salt! And we're in America not Italy so... The pasta was a bit overdone, and the canned clams were plentiful. It comes with a sliver of a garlic toast. The best clam linguine is at Lahaina Pizza Company, FYI. SERVICE: Staff are friendly. Reservations are not needed as they don't get packed. OVERALL: Good food, average pricing, small portions.

I was a little skeptical at first, who wants to order a nice pasta meal at the counter?!?! I didn't, but my husband insisted on trying this place and I'm glad I did!! My gnocchi was cooked to perfection and the pesto was extremely wonderful. I also got a side salad with the fresh goat cheese and my husband got the penne with meat sauce! Had I been blind folded, I would've thought I was in a 5 star in NYC! I think it's independently owned, not sure, but they know what they are doing and they do it well!

    (5)
  • Kristin R.

My husband and son absolutely love this place for the baked penne NY and the cheese garlic bread. I love the cheese garlic bread and I get the baked penne. I love the baked penne and I rarely treat myself to a massive carb overload like this. It's worth it. The error is a little dirty for my taste but we still like it a lot.

Not the best food we've had, but the value and the ambiance warrant the 4 stars. A quaint little place a few blocks removed from the overly-crowded Front St. We split a pasta dish, which had a watery thin sauce, and a flatbread, which was better than the pasta. But with an affordable bottle of wine and a chill little patio, it made for a great meal / setting. This place does a ton of take-out business, so I guess a lot of other people found it very good. We probably wouldn't go back, but we're glad we experienced it!

Ordered the spaghetti and meatballs. Not bad, but $12 was a bit to high price for this entree and serving size. Meatballs was just mainly meat rolled into a ball and fried on one side. Pasta had way to much water in it. Would go back and maybe try something different...

Had somebody new photos to share. Still one of my favorite eateries in Lahaina Town. Consistently delicious and inviting. I saw some new pizzas on the menu that I will have to try! Ahi Nicoise is always my favorite. This time we got the clam linguine but my preference is with angel hair to mop up all the sauce!!! See you again Juan!

I only give the star because I am uncertain if you are able to give negative stars. Had the Chicken Parm for lunch today and it was so bad that I never want to have the dish again. The wait staff never once checked to see how the meal was. I suggest that you run not walk, run away if you are seriously thinking about eating here.

I ordered the pesto linguine and it did not disappoint! My only problem was that I didn't discover the cheese shaker until I was almost done with my meal. The bread they include is really good, and crispier than a salad crouton. I avoided the fettucine alfredo, which tasted bland. My cousins had some sort of pasta with marinara sauce. A lot of sauce went to waste; there was so much left over. My friend got a sandwich, which I tried half of. It was pretty good, but I'm sad the cheese wasn't melted. The price was Maui reasonable, and the service was great. The guy at the register was friendly and welcoming.

Cruising with the family in Lahaina last weekend we found ourselves looking for a casual sit down place with reasonable prices... did a quick search online that suggested this spot. At first, everything fit the bill, super casual (you pay at counter, then they bring the food to you), and prices are fairly affordable for Lahaina. Wife got the Baked Penne with a side Caesar salad, kids got the Fettucine Alfredo, and I ordered the Linguine Clams that I "had to try" according to the girl at the register. Salad arrived first, nothing to write home about, leaves were slightly warm actually and the dressing lacked the usual Caesar zing. A few minutes later dinner arrived. All that I had expected when it came to flavor fell completely flat from the very first bite. Okay, I'll add salt, I thought. Still no flavor. More salt, and Parmesan, maybe. Still. No flavor. I asked my wife about her dish and she had the same reaction. Although a couple dashes of salt did help elevate the flavor to something semi-palatable. I tried the kids' dish (how can you mess up Alfredo?) and unfortunately it also lacked any pizzazz. I tried to finish my fair portion of noodles but it just felt like I had noodles, something chewy, and sauce in my mouth with no flavor at all. I couldn't do it. Very disappointing, as I'm usually very forgiving if I can find at least one decent bite of food in my entire meal or even one from someone else in my party. Can't complain about service, everyone was nice and there seemed to be regulars engaged in regular-type conversation with the staff, but I would definitely not go back on my own bill. I hate to say it but if someone offered to pay I'd probably offer to pay and opt for another spot. 2 stars cuz the service was fine. Memorable for the wrong reason.

We spent a lot of money for the five of us and it wasn't worth it. My sandwich was almost $10 and it had a very small amount of fries. Very small for what I paid. The pizza crust was like a quesadilla topped with salad and two pieces of prosciutto. Not too tasty and hard. The eggplant pasta again was a small plate and very blah tasting. The shrimp on the side was average.

  • Sandy P.

Such a cute spot. I would have never found it if it wasn't for locals tho. I was so excited to have found vegan pizza after being on a ship working for almost 2 weeks with no vegan pizza, this was definitely heaven. And the staff was so friendly. If I'm ever back... it's definitely a stop.

Bathroom reeks like urine. Customer service 1 star Food 2.5 stars Television blaring loud for no reason. Wouldn't recommend.

My kids got spaghetti - one with meatballs & one with just sauce, both were bland. Also, they barely gave them any sauce... like we were taking from their personal stash. Hard to enjoy spaghetti when it's lacking on those two things. My wife got the pesto fettuccine & added chicken on the cashier's guidance. Again, very bland and lacking on flavor... we now know why he recommended adding the chicken (or shrimp or fish). I got the penne bake NY style. Better than the other dishes, but extremely hot, overly soupy, and still lacking flavor. I dont know why making pasta seems so difficult. I am not expecting Olive Garden, but I can do a much better job at home for a fraction of the cost. We definitely have NO desire to return for seconds.

  • Cory R.

Good food, reasonable prices. I was very surprised based on previous reviews this place wasn't absolutely packed when we arrived. We ordered at the counter and sat down to wait for our food. Within 5 minutes we had our salads (not a traditional Caesar, but good none the less). Within another 10 minutes we had our pasta, which was a good portion of fresh, quality Penne, baked with 3 kinds of cheese. This place was probably one of the best values of our trip.

    (4)
  • JAMES Q.

Ok this place is the bomb - prices are so good for the portions and deliciousness. I go there often and they make me a "James Salad". It's the regular one but with Sliced Mozzarella instead of feta, and the dressing on the side (their dressing is great). If you've read my other reviews, you may have guessed I don't eat meat or chicken, only fish, so I can't comment on that stuff. But the baked Penne is out of this world. And for a person that eats a lot of veggies like me, their garlic broccoli and squash is delicious (I normally don't like squash). Sarah swears by the brussel sprouts but I can't eat very many (too rich). Oh, and before I tried their beets I literally HATED beets. Whatever they do, they sold me on beets. Seriously. Ok, enough out of me for now - James. Wait, I have a PS - they have a chocolate cream dessert that is totally decadent.

Penne Pasta is a local favorite in the heart of Lahaina on Dickenson. It's a hole in the wall restaurant with great food. My kids love the lavash-style pizzas and the grilled ahi Caesar salad. I love the squash ravioli (only on the specials menu) and the garlic bread.

Food was amazing at a reasonable price. And yes they serve wine! Great atmosphere. Very friendly people. Will definitely visit again soon!

This restaurant is a kind of fast food and the pasta taste like that. If you want to eat real Italian food, don't go to this place. But if you want to eat and don't expand that much money, the restaurant is okay.

My husband and I were looking for a place to eat while on vacation in Maui. We happened upon this place by chance. By the looks of it on the outside we were not sure what it would be like. We were both pleasantly surprised by the quick service, amazing food, and ambience!! We are vegetarian and they had quite a few options for us on their menu! They do not use much salt, so I did salt my food, but Over all it was a great restaurant and I would visit them again!!

We were disappointed with the quality of food especially after reading all the reviews. The food lacked taste and was very bland. Nice of the beaten path place and really quite but the food was lacking. Their are better Italian place in lahaina.

  • Kapualani B.

This is not one of those fancy pasta restaurants that charge you $$ for a plate of pasta. It's no nonsense order at the counter and get a decent meal served up quickly and al dante. We ordered the pasta with marinara, the pesto linguine, the meatball sandwich, greens salad and calimari pasta. Everyone loved their dishes and the total price was under $40. Can't beat that.

    (4)
  • Jonathan H.

This place is just another pizza joint. I ordered the chicken pesto linguini and It was mediocre... Very oily and tasteless... Also, I added chicken and was dissatisfied by the 4 or 5 "small cubes" of chicken I had in my pasta... customer service was also mediocre. I guess the salad was OK. Just seems like a below average place, I will not be returning for seconds

My boyfriend and I live in Wailuku and we rarely visit Lahaina, but every time we do, we visit this fine establishment! I am a vegan, and this place accommodates for. vegan or gluten-free diets. We've been there 4 times in the past year, and the service is always friendly, the food is always amazing!

The food was ok and normally that would be 3 stars, but they had a really good gluten free pizza crust and decent wine so I'm giving them 4 stars.

For a quick, easy, fairly inexpensive, low key meal Penne Pasta Cafe is a great choice. We came here after a recommendation from friends. We were staying in kaanapali and this was only a 10 minute drive. You order at the counter and they bring your food out. My husband and I both had the baked New York penne. It was tasty and a good portion (I even had some leftover). My kids had spaghetti and pasta with butter and cheese. They both enjoyed their meals. (Tip- there is no kids menu on the wall, the kids menus are near the cash register). The atmosphere on the patio is nice.

Penne is absolutely the best! ! We've been going there for years! We love Juan & his crew. The food is always great. My favorite is Puttanesca, awesome! And the breads are to die for.

My sister's go-to spot when we've had enough of Local Food and spam musubi's. It delicately tucked near the church and coffee spot we go too... Friendly owner (Juan) and perfect portions. My sis loves their linguine clam... and I often get their penne broccoli with chicken. My meal is always taste and the pasta just cooked right. The chicken grilled... tasty. My token complain: can you please add more than 4 broccoli pieces onto my pasta? I know they're not expensive so why cheap out on portions? I also have to disagree on some Yelpers... I don't think it's a touristy spot b/c its not on Front St and most of the patrons that we saw go in... would have some type of conversation interaction with Juan and sounded like they're locals. To each their own I guess... I do know one thing... since we come to the island 6+ in a year... I'm pretty sure we're coming back! PS: did I mention their prices are better than Pasta Pomodoro and their food quality WAY better than Aloha Mixed Plate.

This place reminded me of Noodles and Company...but the food here tastes so much better. The chef was nice enough to come out and talk to me and walked me through each item that could be made vegan, and they even have Daiya cheese. He recommended the Penne Puttanesca (you must specify vegan) and he veganized it for me (so less the cheese and anchovies). I must say, I was impressed. The food was really good and flavored well. I recommend this place if you're craving pasta.

Ordered Fettucine Alfredo and Penne Broccoli - both were bland. The place has a musty smell inside, so we ate outside. Well - we wont be returning.

I've tried a handful of things and I have to say that nothing sticks out. I use to work nearby and we ordered company lunches many times and I've gone in for lunch on my own a couple of times as well. And it's a rip off. The sauces aren't flavorful, I've had to add salt each time (which in my book is a big no-no!). When you add chicken to any dish, there's not much chicken. I always feel hungry after an hour with a bland aftertaste and a big hole in my wallet. I rather spend less $$ and have more tasty food at Jay's Place a couple of blocks away. They also take the iDcard for an additional 20% off

For pasta, it's rather expensive. All I'm gonna say is: Prosciutto Salad Flatbread! That is all that matters.

    (4)
  • Ron L.

!!! Celiac Friendly !!! Not only do they have GF pasta, they make their own brown rice pizza crust and bread. The server/cashier/chef has got to be one of the most caring people on the planet. Oh yeah, our 2 pizzas were very good and priced at about half of a gluten free pizza in San Francisco.

My family and I ate here on a trip to Maui. Weren't expecting much. Family had the spaghetti with meat sauce. Pasta was over cooked and sauce was not flavorful. I had the spaghetti and clam sauce and it was pretty good. Clams were fresh and favorful especially after adding Parmesan cheese and pepper. Pasta was overlooked. Had the caprece salad and it was ok. Ordered the flatbread and it was not good. Cracker style crust.

  • Sunny C.

This place was just OK. Food was basic, nothing special. Sauce tasted like it came out of a bottle. They have a standard Italian menu, and the food is very average. I had the chicken picatta which I did not enjoy...... It's on a quiet little street off Front St -- and has indoor as well as outdoor seating . We didn't try the pizza. Not a great selection of wine or cocktails. Still, it's kid friendly and relatively affordable Italian. The owner was friendly and had a good selection of gluten free items. It would be a nice place for a large group as it's casual and items can be shared.

Best pasta place in Maui! The prosciutto pizza is off the hook! Very friendly staff and certainly not an over priced tourist trap restaurant like a majority of the places in Maui.

Talk about impeccable customer service~ Juan has a great memory!!! We stopped in here this past Valentine's weekend last month and grabbed a quick takeout of his garlic bread appetizer and the fettuccini Alfredo on our way to Glow Putt in Lahaina. As soon as I walked in, Juan greets me by name! Wow, it's been over a year since I'd been in. We briefly catch up, he asks about our stay and my son. Thank you for adding a bit of personal attention to yet another memorable trip to Maui, Juan!

Fair fare. Spaghetti and meatballs lacked flavor. Bread was fresh but tasteless. Salads just okay. Not horrible but mostly bland. Probably won't be going back again.

Just my kind of little restaurant! After spending the day on the beach it was nice to eat at the Penne Pasta Cafe. It's a cute little family restaurant with street parking. I thoroughly enjoyed the Alfredo with the garlic bread crustini and my husband liked his chicken parmesan. The style is kind of like an old school pizza place complete with an order number to take with you to your seat after ordering at the register. Very relaxed and casual dining but delicious Italian cuisine! Yummm!

I don't understand the great reviews. my husband and I went here because it looked like a reasonably priced place to eat. after ordering buffalo wings with no meat on the bones we realized we were in for it. I order fettuccini Bolognese. it was tomato paste with chili powder and a clump or two of meat. and the portions were so small we had to get go elsewhere to get dinner. he got chicken parm over pasta. his sauce was ok, I guess. the place had a dirty feel to it. it didn't LOOK dirty, but my chair and table were sticky. no thanks.

Took the family (6- and 8-year old daughters and Wifey) there last night, the girls were exhausted after a long day of frolicking at the resort pool and beach. My 6-year old is a picky eater, but pasta pretty much is a sure thing. The menu is fine - nothing particularly compelling, but they have most of what you'd expect in a place with "pasta" in the name. They have lactose-free and gluten-free options as well, though I have my doubts as to whether the gluten-free choices aren't contaminated with gluten from other menu items. Prices are reasonable for the area; the decor has some cute elements, but the flat-screen TV somewhat dominates the room in terms of attention (at least for TV-starved young girls). Two problems. First, the food didn't taste particularly good and serving sizes were on the small side. And second, service (on a Sunday night, a steady flow of customers but not full) was abysmal. They brought out the girls' orders first, but got it wrong (one was supposed to have soy cheese, but the server didn't seem to understand, and then started to take both back, and finally brought the correct version. Then, five minutes later, she brought my dish (pasta bolognese). My wife's flatbread? Nowhere to be found. Never showed up. She went to the counter and was given a refund for that, no explanation as to what happened. Not a very satisfying experience...

This was our 2nd year vacationing in beautiful Maui and staying at the Aina Nalu, a stone's throw from Penne Pasta. We did't get a chance to eat at PP last year but made it a point to have dinner this time and we weren't disappointed. The menu is your typical "Olive Garden" type fare. You order and then sit down and they bring your food to your table. We order and sit down. The restaurant itself is pretty small, so I can see why they get busy so easily. Our food arrives and looks fantastic! The portions were decent and the pasta was tasty but the sauce on my shrimp scampi was a little watered down. Nevertheless it still tasted good! The kids both got fettucine alfredo and loved their dishes! The garlic cheese bread was fabulous, but give me a break...you can't really screw up garlic bread! All in all, it was a good dinner choice and perfect break from the usual Maui fare of burgers and fish.

This place was recommended by my mother in law and as a pasta lover, so I had to try it. My visit was in April 2011 and I forgot to review it until now, but I still remember what I did not like about the place! I ordered chicken piccata which is supposed to be lemony. There was NO lemon at all in this dish. It did not even look like piccata so I complained to the waitress that it was not what I ordered. I was told that this was their chicken piccata. I think they needed to look up the definition of piccata as this was something different entirely. Hopefully it is better now than it was when I was there, but I am not interested in going back. There are far too many better places in Lahaina!

I have been pleasantly surprised by the wide range of vegetarian options available on Maui and in Lahaina specifically. This restaurant offers gluten free, lactose free, dairy free and vegetarian options out the wazoo. It seemed quite busy on Saturday night. I ordered the special, which was tasty enough although a little underseasoned. The antipasto plate was average - better than what you'd grab from a grocery store, but not as nice as a higher end restaurant; but to be fair... this isn't a high end restaurant. It's go-to Italian with the usual compliment of pizza and pasta fare. The kids pasta with sauce was a little overcooked. The spaghetti with meatballs was good. They were very friendly and welcoming and it had a laid back atmosphere. We'll go here again before our trip is over.

It is a nice place near Front rd by all the shops about 2 blocks away. The price is decent for maui and the service is very nice. When they say "flat bread pizza" they mean it but the pizza was still amazing and fettuccine Alfredo is some of the best I had. Over all a very nice place to eat.

  • Donni B.

You have got to be kidding me? You call this italian? I'm italian and I would be ashamed to serve this. It was so spicy that I could barely eat it. The meatballs were hard as rocks. Bad flavor. The dipping oil for the facciciao was again over spices. I should have known by going to an italian restaurant with a "chef" by the name of Juan. I sent back my pasta because it had a pool of water. Burnt tasting sauce. My husband got a salad and gave it 3 stars. I would have given it 2. The salad had whole gherkin pickles, premade potato salad, a ton of anchovies. The bill was $31 bucks for a salad and lousy pasta. When I talked win Juan to explain how terrible the food was, in a condescending tone kept saying thank you. He didn't even look me in the eye once. I will never go back there. Hubbie said to.me on the way to.our hotel, will you listen.to.me when I say you are a better cook so stop trying to eat italian out.

This place is pretty busy because the menu looks very safe and comforting for us tourists. However it's probably a better choice to go get some yummy mixed plates at Aloha or Local Food or some tasty Hawiian burgers. The pasta was way overcooked...miles away from al-dente The tiramisu was too sweet

Had their pizza, very healthy feel. The basil added a great touch. The only turn off was adding a topping costed $5. Nevertheless, very delicious.

I do not understand some of the great reviews on this place. You place your order at the counter...the guy behind the counter looked either bored or sleepy. As we were asking questions, he kept yawning in our face! The pizza was thin crust...must have been as you could almost see though it. Some people that were there before us were asking where their order was. . We got our food before they did.

What happened? We were just here Easter week 2012. We have been eating here or ordering to-go for about ten years. We all have our favorite dishes. On April 10, 2013 we called ahead to place our order for dine in. After I placed our order by phone, an older sounding lady asked how long it would be before we arrived to have our dinner. I informed her we would be at the restaurant in about 10-15 minutes. She replied "Well, hurry up." What kind of aloha was this? As we were waiting to pay, there was a young female customer at the counter with her "untouched pizza" - she'd found a hair. I began to feel we were in trouble... Our favorites soon arrived and they were dismal at best; the lady on the phone had neglected to add a grilled chicken breast to a fettuccine alfredo - not sure how that got lost in translation. The chicken picatta was swimming in oil and also mixed with bell peppers (an unlisted, unwanted, non-tastly addition). Oh, and the pours of the three separate wines were of less volume than what we swish with mouthwash. We decided to eat outside - what a mistake - there was a wandering cat that brushed up against my husband's leg; he promptly shooed it away as I am severely allergic to cats. We asked if it was the restaurants, "no just a stray we feed and water". All that and the prices are up 15%. You've been warned.

We had walked past this restaurant all week and decided to try it out on the last day of our vacation. Sauces was super thin and fake tasting. There was suppose to be a fresh piece of mahimahi on my dish, but it could just as well have been a dry piece of chicken. Would not go back.

They really make an effort here to accommodate people. In addition to all the italian basics, you can request non-dairy cheese to make your dish vegan; whole wheat bread; or gluten-free pasta. As a vegan, I really appreciated this after struggling to go with my family to all the trendy seafood places that didn't have a single vegetable on the menu!

Being Celiac, I needed to research possible places to eat Gluten-free (GF) before arriving in Maui. Before visiting, I sent an email to an email address I found on the 'net for Penne Pasta, because I had found information that made it sound like this place might serve GF food, but the reference to GF was vague. To my surprise I received a nice response back from the former owner putting me in contact with the current owner. That alone was impressive although it has no impact on this review. It just made me really look forward to the Aloha Spirit I'd be encountering on this vacation. Shortly after that, the owner Juan, emailed me & let me know what was GF on the menu and what was not and why. We ate here on our first night in Maui. The food was really fresh, and they have signs clearly stating that they have both GF pasta & dairy/lactose free cheese. There's an upcharge for both, but that's to be expected, special dietary items simply cost more than mass-produced food...I'm cool with that! I had the Penne Bolognese. It came out super hot and had fresh basil cut over the top of the sauce. My husband (not GF) had the pizza that was on Special - Goat Cheese. It had one of those super thin crusts. He really enjoyed it. I asked if Juan was in but, sadly, was told he was on holiday. Alas, looks like I'll have to plan another trip to Maui to put a face with the email and to thank him personally. Another vacation in Maui? Now THAT would be a bummer! :) Penne Pasta is a small restaurant where you order at the counter, get a number and they bring the food to you. Although we did not order any alcoholic drinks, it appeared they had a full bar. If you're looking for a reasonably priced meal in Lahaina, visit Penne Pasta. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Information on my approach to Gluten-free (GF) eating in my reviews, for those for whom it matters: Here's some background on me that should not only help those that are Celiac and must eat GF, but should give a little insight into my overall approach to reviews: although not officially medically diagnosed by an M.D. with Celiac Disease (for which the only cure is to not eat wheat, barley, rye or oats, or anything that contains those ingredients), I live my life as a Celiac. I have attended numerous support group meetings for those with Celiac, including the Food Fair for the Celiac Disease Foundation in Los Angeles. So, I think I know a thing or two about Celiac Disease. True Celiacs should not ingest any Gluten. Ever. No, really...EVER! If you want to learn more or why, I suggest you visit the Celiac Disease Foundation's website, as it is a Disease and NOT an "allergy" as many believe. With that said, since I have not had the Biopsy of my small intestine or the DNA test, I am not "officially" a Celiac. I've had the initial blood test, but was eating GF at the time, so it came back negative. So, although my reviews address eating from a Gluten-free perspective, it is up to you as an individual to make sure that what might be ok for me is ok for you if you have the Disease.

Located just down the street from our hotel, Penne Pasta was one of the first places we ate at in Maui. It's a seat yourself kind of place like most of Lahaina where they tell you sit where you feel comfortable. You order at the register and sit and they bring the food out to you. We ordered a bottle of Savangon Blanc, it was very good for $20. The spaghetti sauce was a little runny and the meatballs were a little large for tm taste but still good. The pizza was good sized and executed well. I liked it.

This must be Maui's version of Pasta Pomodoro and it doesn't disappoint. After a rather tiring day touring the island, we really didn't feel like waiting in line at any of the restaurants on Front St. Thankfully Penne Pasta was only a block away from our resort so we decided to call in a togo order and enjoy it in the comfort of our room. Problem. No one is answering the damn phone. I try again...and again...after 15 times, I give the hell up and walk my ass over there. Lady at the counter: "Whoopsie! I hit the wrong button and turned off the phone!" Um..good job, woman! Anyhow, she was apologetic and we placed our order: Two orders of Mixed Greens: comes with feta but I requested without. Is it just my family or do all Chinese oldies run at the sight of cheese? Anyhow, the salads were quite large we ended up saving them to eat on the flight back to the mainland the next day. In another review, someone said the salad dressing tasted like it had gone sour, but I disagree. I think it's their own house concoction and we actually found it quite tasty. Oh, and it comes with a lot of edamame beans. Yum! Penne Pomodoro: It's quite basic...ragu of plum tomatoes, basil and garlic. That being said, it was pretty good especially when it's piping hot. Linguine Clam Sauce: Chopped clams, lemon, garlic, parsley and butter. Loaded with clams and the sauce was perfectly tangy without being overwhelming. It was all ready in 15 minutes flat and other than the phone hiccup, this meal was an overall success. And like others said, it's much more affordable than most other things on the island.

Coming to Maui from Napa, CA & after eating great fish for 3 days, we craved good Italian food for lunch. We searched the net and found Penne Pasta Cafe in Lahaina, & stopped in. Cute restaurant with patio dining, and their Baked Penne is delicious ... get a bottle of Pinot Grigio and it will top off your fabulous meal! Thanks to Juan Gomez, the owner - fab meal!

Went here for lunch based on Yelp reviews. I thought it was quite good and reasonably priced for Maui. I had Chicken Piccata with linguine. The pasta was cooked al dente and was a perfect portion. The chicken breast was very lightly breaded and pan fried and the sauce was exploding with flavor with tomatoes, garlic and capers. A very nice portion that really filled me up! I also had a small ceasar salad which was tasty and well presented. I will definitely be back on my next trip to Maui.

One of only two restaurants my wife and I visited more than once while we spent three weeks on Maui for our honeymoon. The dining room was simple and comfortable. We ate both times indoors, but the restaurant also had outdoor seating which if it hadn't been chilly the nights we went, we would have taken advantage of. The baked penne was fabulous. Fresh herbs, tender pasta and good cheeses. Like some reviewers have remarked, the portions aren't huge, but I found that when I had finished my plate I was full and content. We also tried the pasta pomodoro and their basic pizza. Again, delicious with fresh ingredients. If we ever visit Lahaina again, this would be our first stop for dinner.

We have been eating at Penne Pasta for years. The only downside is that we order too much because we like so many things. Musts are the foccacia with the balsamic dipping sauce; the ultra-thin-crust pizza and the NY-style penne pasta (with bits of beef.) I am a big fan of the nicoise salad - made with garlic-sauteed cubes of ahi. There are nightly specials - another reviewer mentioned the Parmesan mahi which is killer. Portions tend to be large (although that can be inconsistent. The nicoise salad ahi must be portioned by market price. Sometimes there is just a little, sometimes there is enough to share. Never the less, we are alway full when we leave.) Yes, it is casual - but who wants to get dressed up on Maui anyway? If you want dress-up, go to the Ritz-Carlton. (Really, someone complained that the food was served too hot? Now that's a first.) As others have noted, you order from a counter, you get a number to put on the table and then sit inside on picnic-table style benches or curbside at the bistro tables. Again, don't get fancied up for this place. When you are done, spend a while walking down Front Street looking through the art galleries. Some have mentioned Mark Ellman, the restaurateur who started the legendary Avalon and one of the 12 who founded the Hawaiian Regional Cuisine movement. Alas, he no longer owns Maui Tacos but the food at that small Mexican chain remains ono. Ellman's real foodie locations are now Mala Ocean Tavern in Lahainatown and Mala in Wailea. As for the rest of us, we love Penne Pasta for its casual atmosphere and consistently good food and reasonable (for Maui) prices.

I can't believe as I write this that Penne Pasta has only a 3.5 stars here on Yelp. I'm going to challenge that a bit, here's why. We've eaten there twice on our recent stay in Maui. Granted, this is sit down, but waiter-minimal. You purchase your food at a counter and they bring it to your table. It isn't on a beach, it's just hidden a way a bit on a side street leading into Front Street, the main tourist drag in Lahaina. So, I understand that if ambiance is what you are after or what you expect, that you might ding the overall rating a bit. For us though, it is a place we are very comfortable! :) Most recently I enjoyed the special, Parmesan Mahi Mahi on Penne. Superb! For Appetizer, we had their amazing garlic bread - I think they do a standard Garlic Bread, two halves, then invert them w/ some Mozzarella in between the pieces and do a final bake of that. Awesome! We also had the special appetizer Roasted Garlic Skillet Clams. Another winner! Joie enjoyed the Baked Penne this last time out, and the first time we were there she had the Mozzarella Sandwich - also tasty. The kids meals were good, the flatbread pizzas, cheese or pepperoni were winners for them. For a very casual dining experience, and one that you can generally afford more than once or twice, this is highly recommended!

Nice atmosphere, interesting menu items, quality food, reasonable prices. The downsides are that the portions are tiny, our waiter got one of our orders wrong, and then he was nowhere to be found for drinks or when we wanted our bill. I didn't mind, but two of my friends were very displeased with the table service.

Nothing special. Basically it's a business designed to make money from tourists with no pizzazz. We went there since they offer gluten free pasta and pizza options - and they do indeed have that - but it wasn't very tasty and the pizza toppings were meager. Bleh.

Penne Pasta is definitely a good deal. I eat a lot, and I was actually pretty satisfied with my meal (split a huge nicoise salad and baked penne NY); granted I've been eating 4 meals while on Maui b/c the walks to/on/from the beach is a sure calorie-burner! Whoa. I really wanted to try their specials but our schedule didn't work out w/ the menu schedule... so maybe next time! I would def come again, when seeking non-island food or generally good tasting food in W. Maui! We were taking the food to go so to be on the safe side, got the Baked Penne NY (beef) and the Nicoise Salad. We were dying to eat it, but needed to make a few stops, and it was such a tease!!! It smelled sooo good!!! The salad is $13 and it's really worth it. The chef kindly set aside the garlic marinated ahi tuna so that we can mix it ourselves. The salad is packed w/ all sorts of goodness like soy beans, olives, eggplant, etc. and this puts other salads to shame (they're like, weeds in the pavement). And I must say this is the BEST NICOISE SALAD i've ever had!!!!! There are plenty french restaurants w/ fancy sounding NS and I've been disappointed (both by price and the puniness of the dish)... but not here my friends!!! And despite not being able to eat the pasta on the spot, it was still al dente. I don't think the baked penne is necessarily a signature dish, but it was standard and decent. The sauce tastes comfortingly authentic. There are plenty of over-rated restaurants on Front St. (like Kimo's) where it's expensive and not necessarily top-notch tasting. But I agree w/ PPC's awards (5 consecutive yrs or so?), that their food is truly worth their value.

Your italian connection in Maui should start here. This much loved cosy place is a stone's throw from the main street in Lahaina. Come here for very many pasta's and fruits at very reasonable prices. Definitely worth a visit.

After a disappointing visit to Lahaina Coolers, some of us were still hungry and stumbled down the street in search of good food. This place doesn't look like much but we were very pleasantly surprised by the great food here. It's a hole in the wall with a few tables inside and a few outside by the street. You order at the counter (not always the sign of great cuisine LOL) and they bring you the food. Naturally we ordered pasta, lots of pasta. They even offered healthier whole wheat and rice-based pastas (my wife said the wheat pasta was great). I had penne with brocolli, garlic and tomatoe sauce and garlic bread. I'm originally from the East Coast and I've spent a lot of time with Italians eating authentic Italian food and I must say the sauce I had on this dish was epic and probably the best I've had west of the Mississippi. The prices were very very reasonable, especially for Maui. We will definitely be back!

Not bad! Went there for the thin crust, cracker crunch pizzas. Simple, light, airy. Economical eats for a family of five! If you are staying in the area, definitely worth the walk to eat or take-out.

I would not go back. This was our worst meal in Maui! I will admit the focaccia we had before the meal was great but the pasta was tasteless. My Lean Cuisines taste better! I got the fettucini alfredo based on what people said here and it was terrible. I will not go back.

The squash is excellent, and all of their pastas are good. The flatbread was eh. It is good food for such a 'hole in the wall' place. Excellent chocolate pot de creme.

I really like this place. The food was good, but it wasn't so incredibly amazing that I can give it 5 stars. They are also reasonably priced, which is tough to find on Maui. So here's the rundown. 1) You have to try their flatbread pizza. If you're a thin crust pizza guy, that is very good. 2) Their sausage pasta special is also very good, but the downside is that they overcook their pasta. It just didn't have their al dente texture that makes pasta so enjoyable. Their sauces though are quite fragrant and flavorful. It's tastier and more aromatic than most places I've gone. Two big thumbs up there. 3) Their AC is kind of broken. Only 2 of their 4 ACs from above seemed to be on and it was quite warm in there, especially in the middle of the summer. We tried to stay cool as much as possible by sitting underneath their fans. Oher than that, a great place to eat. I'd go back there when I have an inkling for Italian in the future, that's for sure.

This is a another good place Lahaina town. Good food, try the Clam Chowder, reasonable prices and good portions. Off the beaten path so you save a few bucks. Dinner for (4) was $45 with two pizzas, Penne Pasta (mmmmmm), salad, clam chowder and (4) soft drinks. You order at the counter, so tipping is not really super important but I left a couple bucks anyways. It's on Dickerson next door to Snorkel Bob's. Park across the street if you can't get street parking and stroll down Front St. to walk off dinner.

Don't waste your money!!! My boyfriend works down the street and couldn't leave work so I got the spag/meatballs plate to-go for 12 and some change. WASTE OF MONEY! It was a super small plate of spagetti with 2 measily little meatballs and barely any sauce... we also go a thin slice of bread that looked like it had been sitting there for hours! I do not recommend this place to anyone... 0 stars and will not go to again.

While visiting Maui, this was our only dinner in Lahaina since we spent most of our time in Kihei. After eating so much great food in Maui, I expected Penne Pasta Cafe to be just as good since 1) I love pasta and 2) my friend, a Maui-raised girl raved on and on about the sizzling squash... Well, I guess my expectations got ahead of myself. Not as great as I expected. While I ordered the chicken picatta (my must try at every Italian restaurant we go to), my hubby got the bolognese, and my daughter got the spaghetti. We also got the garlic cheese bread and sampled the sizzling squash. All of it was pretty average. Nothing spectacular, but nothing horrendous as well. A big indication that this place served just ordinary food was the fact that the most memorable thing we ate was the garlic bread. As far as the service... let's just say that the cashier wasn't the most pleasant woman I've come across. To be polite, I'll just leave it at that. Penne Pasta's only redeeming quality was it's quaint, cafe-ish atmosphere.

6 of us ate here. I had the spinach manicotti, it was meh..not bad but not excellent either. Overall everything was just okay, nothing special. Put it this way... Olive Garden is excellent compared to this place.

Definitely a spot for locals because they were served first. My wife and I were here few weeks back and called in advance with questions about vegetarian options. Very helpful and several different options. Staff was nice but really poor service and low quality food. We ordered baked butter nut squash for appetizer which was good. Entrees were two pasta dishes. Sauces were not flavorful and both pastas were way over cooked. Nothing worse than mushy pasta. We were there before the 3 local couples that ordered after us. All were served well before we were. No mention from the staff there would be a wait or why things took so long. Quality of the pasta dishes was less than we could have done by going to the grocery store and buying things on our own. Gave 2 stars instead of 1 because they were helpful with vegetarian selections. Worst meal in Maui over the 6 days we were there.

I was so pleased to finally eat dinner at a less expensive place, but this was disappointing. My mixed greens salad actually tasted bad (it tasted like the dressing had gone sour). My son and my husband both had the same pasta, but only my son got a meatball. My husband was jealous, until my son gave him most of it since he didn't like how it tasted. This is from a kid who's never met a meatball he didn't like. Sure, the price was reasonable, but I wouldn't bother again.

This is our favorite "cheap" restaurant on Maui, we always come back. Pasta is pretty good, you do better with the specials. Get the Scampi if they have it. Only about 1 1/2 blocks from Front Street but seems off the beaten track. I was excited when I heard they expanded (it used to be tiny) but I have to say, its lost some of its charm now. I guess it seemed a little more "homey" before. Still, its a good meal for a good price, you know good (cheap) food in Lahaina is hard to come by!

    (4)
  • Anna L.

Cute little spot, informal - you order at the counter. They have some nice outside tables and the prices are a little lower being right off of Front street. The food is pretty light so you don't feel like a total glutton after you eat here.

  • Jennifer C.

Very good and inexpensive the most expensive thing on the on the menu was less then $14. It was like Italian fast food you don't need to tip, but the food is as good as sit down restaurants. The guy there's nice too.

Off a side street not far from Front St., Penne Pasta will fool you. Small but clean, unpretentious, the food and service are both outstanding. Prices are reasonable--very reasonable. The chef knows what he's doing and is friendly and recommended several dishes to us. Return visits confirmed that this is an excellent choice in Lahaina. Don't miss a great meal and a bargain at that! Stay away from the tourist joints and get some real food!

Good tasting Italian food at a reasonable price. The calamari and cheesy garlic bread was incredible. Was really impressed with how quickly they brought out our food. Definitely a step up above pasta pomodoro. Not a fine dining establishment but a great way to get your Italian fix without the fast food feel.

  • David B.

Frankly, I'm surprised that people consider this Italian. I also grew up on the East Coast. I know lots of 1st Generation Italians and have been going to true NY Italian for a long time. This was Italian that anyone can make. The sauce was OK, but could have been from a jar. The pasta was no great shakes - it tasted like anything you could buy in a supermarket and make yourself. Chicken....meh. Not a bad piece, but again, nothing special and nothing overtly Italian about it other than it was breaded. I understand this is the newest place from the guy who created Maui Tacos? If that's the case - shame on you. Even for Maui the prices were high considering the atmosphere and poor service we had from the one guy working who really didn't seem like he wanted to be there.

  • Carina F.

Frommer's recommended this place but adequately explained that the prices were good because you ordered at a counter. It was never described as authentic italian. We went in expecting some fast-foody Italian food. We had been spending tons of money on fancier meals so this was a nice break - and a break from Hawaiian/Asian food. What is really weird is this place is owned by the same guy as Maui Tacos (which I didn't get to try but heard good things about). Maui Tacos and Penne Pasta? The two are pretty different. Penne Pasta is about a block or two from Front Street, so good location if you're just strolling around. There is some outdoor seating to enjoy the Maui weather. We sat inside though since we were sunburned. Haha. The menu had some typical Italian dishes. We asked what was the most popular, to which the co-owner replied, "The Baked Penne Pasta" = Duh. Why we didn't get that though, I don't know. My bf got the Chicken Parmesan and I got the Spaghetti Bolognese. We also got the house mixed green salad with the house dressing. I forgot how he described it, but it was actually pretty good and came with a crostini. The Spaghetti Bolognese wasn't terrible - in fact the bolognese actually had some pretty good flavor. They didn't use cheapy meat or ground beef - it was actual shredded, marinated beef, and it was tasty. The pasta was al dente and they had fresh grated parmesan cheese. My bf's Chicken Parmesan was plain, nothing special. The sauce was bland and was just "OK" he said. All in all, easy enough to come for a quick meal when you're tired of forking out all your loot!

This is a wonderful place in historic Lahaina. The staff is very courteous and pleasant and the place is quite cute. The menu is simple but the food is really tasty. They are extremely fast to serve the food so that you don't have to wait very long. The prices are also quite a nice change from the very high price you pay just about everywhere else. Good pasta options, sandwiches, salads... nice variety. It's also a great place to take kids (they do have a nice kids menu). Once you're done with dinner, you can walk along the main street just a block away and be by the beach while checking out things like the huge Banyan tree, the ice cream parlors, etc.

GOOD FOOD, GOOD PRICE! Nice little place. We were walking around Lahaina starving...we were standing outside checking out the menu when patrons sitting in the small outdoor seating area (about 3 tables) told us to stay and eat! We're glad we took their advice. Amongst 4 of us, we ordered 2 pastas (spaghetti and meatballs [YUM!] and lasagna bolognese) and 2 pepperoni pizzas. The food is delicious - we devoured it all to every last drop of sauce and every last crumb. Surprisingly to all of us, afterwards, we weren't stuffed and we were still a tiny bit hungry. Maybe it was because we had a very active day, but maybe adding some appetizers or another entree would have helped us out there afterwards. I like it! I would check it out if you're there!

Went here for lunch based on Frommer's review. It was one of the best meals we had in Lahaina. Good menu variety. We had the margherita pizza, spaghetti pomodoro, chicken ceasar salad, roasted beet casserole, garlic cheese bread. Everything was tasty and fresh. You order at the counter and they bring it to your table. Service was friendly and efficient. Easy to find, a couple of blocks off the main street. Casual atmosphere. Air conditioned (unlike the Swiss Cafe, also recommended on Frommers, which we checked out, but did not stay).

This restaurant was a big disappointment. The popular and overall excellent guidebook "Maui Revealed" just dripped all over it, so I feel obliged to share a different view. Yes, the prices are quite reasonable, especially for Maui, but the food falls way short. Diners order at the register and then take a number, along with some puny little olives, to their table. The Caesar Salad I started with was actually OK. However, the Chicken Parmesan with Spaghetti that followed was bland and uninspired. I ate there with three other friends, and they pretty much felt the same way about their food. So we left to take post-dinner stroll on Front Street. Pretty soon after, my stomach all of sudden felt really crummy. Being only a block away from the restaurant, I went back to make use of their bathroom and "return to sender."

slightly different experience than the others on here, i actually thought their pastas were pretty good! it's a quaint little restaurant with some outdoors seating, great location (only a block away from front street), and has a good variety of dishes to choose from. I tried the clam linguini, I'm a sucker for linguini, and enjoyed it alot. but then part of me don't know if it's because I was so tired and hungry from driving 13 hours to hana and back, or the food was really that great? haahaa nonetheless, all of my friends like it as well, so I'm givin' it 4 stars =)

We get off the plane and head to Penna Pasta for our first meal. From going to the mainland to transistion to the island this is the place. The restaurant is laid back. You order off a very simple menu of very fresh italian food at the counter.( Really good food.) They bring out to you your food. The patio is simple but a nice place to sit. In the end you get the laid back feel with a nice pasta, salad or fish

what a pleasant surprise in lahiana! great food!! great service!!! when we walked in we didn't know what to expect. we were very pleasantly surprised. this is a casual place to eat. the prices are good for what you get. the food is made fresh and is brought to your table after ordering at the counter. we had the linguini and clams and chicken picatta. my husband commented that his linguini and clams was the best he has ever eaten. wow!! can't wait to return for another great meal.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
