I just moved into the neighborhood near the Sand Bar & Grill and I'm thinking I might just become a regular. The drink specials are great and the food is way better than I expect from most pau hana spots. I think the service is great too - a nice balance between being neglected and annoyed. I'm not sure of the name of the waitress that typically works when I'm there but she's a cool chick and seems pretty unflappable. Bottom line: Good prices, good food, good drinks, good service, chill atmosphere, and late hours. That right there is a 5 in my book!

This place is located on the first level of Waikiki Sand Villa on Ala Wai. The food is good and it is open late so a good option for late night. The portion is huge but the price is very fair for the location. Our bartender was nice but very slow...waited for our check for about 20 min. If you are staying at the hotel and does not wanna go out to grab a bite, I would recommend this place.

Came here bc of yelp reviews and bc it was late. My mom refused to even take few steps through the front bc it smelled pretty bad and just looked disgusting. Seats with stains all over them (plus that's the shady block after midnight, the hooker walkway, so sets the vibe) I'd attemp to try the food just bc of yelp reviews but most normal people wouldn't, so just keep that in mind lol

Best oyster shooters I've ever had! We stayed in the hotel and became a fan of this bar. Even though we would go out around Waikiki, we also had our final drink of the night here before hitting the elevator to take us to bed. Service is fantastic. The bar staff is so friendly and helpful. One even washed our glasses that we had brought back from the luau we attended earlier in the night. Happy hour prices, and regular prices, of drinks are CRAZY! $4 mixed drinks? YES PLEASE! And as I said before, the oyster shooters here are amazing. C doesn't even like oysters and had numerous "refills". We ended our trip here, with oyster shooters and drinks before we had to leave for the airport. Locals like to frequent here, so you know you're in good hands.

we were looking for a late night bite to eat after some drinking that was nearby our hotel. yelped up this place, and decided to give it a shot. food was dirt cheap, but not so tasteyyy. we had alotta appetizers, but they were meh even with a buzz. i had the locomoco and it was prob the worst yet. basically seemed like frozen beef patties just warmed up toss over some gravy to serve.

Late night fun. After a day setting up new business practices and silent partnerships and running around like a sad tourist about to plant permanent roots on the island.....what a relief. Great service. Great staff. Food was just right and appreciate the late hours.

Have been here many times. It's a convenient place for late night dinner and drink after work for industry people. Food is decent. Service is good especially Laurie.

One of the worse restaurants I have been to. I'd rather eat from a homeless hot dog vendor then this place.

Sand villa is great. Nice late night vibe with an awesome array of music. The sizzling steak and ribs were perfectly prepared. I come here at least once a week to hang out with my friends. My bartender is always Nick, who is probably the best bartender in town. This bar never offers a dull moment. I will continue to visit as often if not more. Cheers!!

A cozy bar located within the lobby area of The Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel. They have an inside bar area and outdoor tables for those wanting to dine al fresco. They have happy hour two times a day: 4:00pm - 7:00pm and 11:00pm - 1:00am. There's no parking lot, valet only. But it's free w/validation. - You can always try your luck at finding street parking along Ala Wai Blvd. FISH & CHIPS ($10.95): bit.ly/10MxiaP Although their portions are generous, my friend and I didn't care for the fish at at. - It didn't taste fresh and was quite dry. We left 2 out of the 4 fillets untouched. - When I asked our waitress what kind of fish it was, she answered "i dont know.....it's "today's catch"..... - We loved the crispy fries that came with it though. CALAMARI RINGS ($8.95): Small rings of calamari lighted battered and fried to a nice golden finish. It's dusted with furikake seasoning ( bit.ly/1qlNbet ) and served with a homemade horseradish cocktail sauce. - It was tasty but the calamari rings were small. Small enough that we had to eat it with forks and chopsticks. RAW OYSTER PLATTER ($12.95 for 5): These bivalves were huge, almost the size of my hands! But the praise stops there because it didn't taste fresh at all. In fact we smelled the "fishiness" as soon as it was placed in front of us.

The amazing hidden gem of Waikiki adds another specialty to their already fabulous menu: Sangrias! The recipe that Nick uses is amazing and leaves you feeling refreshed with the mixture of liquors, wines, and fruits. Nick, Chris, Denise, and Deb are the classiest and friendliest crew of bartenders in Waikiki for tourists and locals alike!

Fabulous Nachos!!! My Favorite Nachos of all time. The Kalua pork on the Nachos make it the best Nachos I have ever had. I crave them! The other food is good too. But the Nachos keep me coming back.

This bar is the only thing my bf and I miss about living in Waikiki. The food is awesome and served late and fresh, the bar and staff is friendly and we think of then all as family. Love the steak and rice, late night omelets, chili, and homemade chowdah. They also have legit seared ahi! Happy hour is fantastic and the bar is a godsent. would hate to see this bar change.

Finding a bite to eat at a late night hour is hard to come by in Honolulu. Finding one that stands out from the rest is even harder. The Sand Bar fits the bill for the first category, but sadly doesn't in the latter. It offers decent food at rather reasonable prices, but it just comes across as lackluster and nothing truly special. The menu is an interesting mix of appetizers and local-inspired plates. If you want to sit back and relax with a cold cocktail and have a few bites, you could certainly do that. While the array is respectable, the flavors seem to fall just a short flat or over the top. The calamari, quesaldilla, and onion rings were decently prepared, however felt a little underseasoned. While on the other hand, the coconut shrimp was served with a rather bold spicy chili dipping sauce that seemed to have been prepared with a heavy hand on the dried chili peppers. The nachos could have also used a little less jalapeno's. When it comes to an entree, the loco moco was a respectable offering and well-prepared. However the burger patty itself was rather rubbery in texture and the island catch was overwhelmed by the rice that accompanied it. Prices are rather reasonable, especially considering we are eating in Waikiki. Most appetizers are in the $6-$8 range and entrees mostly in the $8-$10 range with a few items in the $10-$15 range. Considering we are in Waikiki, that is a pretty good bargain. While you might think the portions might be on the smaller sized, they come out more on the larger side if anything. Service is rather inattentive, however I've only gone in the late hours when most establishments tend to be thin on staffing. That being said, it's not that they were rude or annoying, just weren't around much and water glasses have gone empty. All in all, the Sand Bar offers a respite in the Waikiki hustle and bustle, while serving up decent food that won;t make you wow, however at the same time won't make you cringe.

They changed the menu! And NOT for the better! Gone are the comfort foods - fish tacos, fish 'n chips and the like. Tonight I ordered their new Seafood Pasta ($16.00) which had a so-so tomato sauce and a few pieces of shrimp, one piece of scallop, a couple calamari rings, two mussels and two tiny octopus. No bread, no parmesan, no sides or accompaniments whatever. Meager and totally without merit. My dining partner ordered the Pork Chop ($12.00) which came as two thin chops, thinly coated, atop a bed of sauteed onions, cabbage and a few mushroom. Again, no sides, no accompaniments. Very disappointing new menu.

The other day after class I was hungry (as usual) but I didn't know the area to well so I had to Yelp! it. The most used word I use when I search a place to eat is, "cheap". Ha-ha, I can't help it! There were a bunch of Asian restaurants that popped up first but I decided against it since I felt like I've already had a lot of sushi intake. If I'm not mistaken, within the top ten was The Sand Bar & Grill. So I ended up taking the next bus to Waikiki to get there. I'm already familiar with the place but hadn't really ordered anything from the bar and grill itself so I looked over the menu they have provided. I chose to sit outside because the weather was nice and it'd feel awkward sitting at the bar or on one of the tables. I got the teriyaki chicken with rice. I saw there was a mini plate but it was only available to children eleven years or younger. Sad face, but I ended up getting the regular plate instead. I guess I'm glad I did, I ate half of it and saved the rest for my dad (he was there also but not hungry at the time I ordered). My food arrived not too long after I ordered I don't think they were busy and got a cup of iced cold water with a straw. They actually came outside and handed my food which was nice but I could always get it myself. It's a really casual and I know if I'm ever in Waikiki and want a cheap place to dine for lunch, this is a place I would definitely go back again.

  • Courtney C.

Don't come here expecting awesome happy hour options... Couple bucks off draft beer and well drinks. No food specials. It's a couple blocks off Waikiki so the vibe is more laid back than the higher priced resort bars. It's nice enough but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

Late night food, cheap drinks, fair service. That is what this place is. It could definitely stand to be cleaner. There is a good view of any of the TVs no matter where you sit, but there is no good way to seat more than 4 people. The service was OK, but they charged something extra by accident, and we had to mention it to them. Good thing we caught that -- don't really like the idea of paying for an extra drink. I will give them a pass, since it can happen once in a while, especially since we moved from the bar to a table, and a friend joined us mid-way. Definitely, if you are coming into Waikiki after a long day, this is a place to pump down some cheap drinks. Tipsy-town here I come!

The Sand Bar is really the only real food restaurant in Waikiki that serves decent food late in the evening (if you don't to IHOP or Denny's or opt for Pizza). Most kitchens in Waikiki and town close at 10pm, but not here. They go late. Lots of reliable standards here, but was tempted (again) by the grilled steak smothered with onions and mushrooms. The steak arrives sizzling served on a iron flatplate with plenty of caramelized onions and mushrooms. Mine was ordered medium rare and served up just right. The steak itself is not huge, but just right (and is $10.95). Pair that with a soup or a Caesar salad and you're all set.

Don't come here... wait staff is the worst in Hawaii. Delayed service is one thing, but after half an hour the term "service" is debatable....

Late night grinds have a strange existence in this world. We settle for the subpar once the midnight clock strikes. We continue to return even if it's the worst food and worst service we've ever had, on the benefit of the doubt that it's past midnight. ATTENTION: Please continue reading if you've had a MAC247 rubber pancake from hell. Sand Bar is the answer to this problem plaguing Waikiki. No more must I have to cower at the thought of another night at Denny's, MAC247, McDonalds, or street corners eating nuclear fallout hotdogs. First, they offer free valet. Once something MAC247 was so generous to offer and has since taken it away from us. The staff here is pretty friendly, though they are short staffed at the late hours I usually come. What's really nice is their late night Happy Hour 11pm - 3:30am. You can get $3 Martinis during this time, HOLLER - it's like having a Bambutwo in Waikiki! The real reason I come here is the fish and chips. Moist large pieces of mahimahi in a perfectly golden crisped exterior. Fries have the same exact matching crispness (how I rate fish and chips! TEXTURES MUST MATCH). The other food here is good too - good enough to be DAYTIME WORTHY. That's right, I have eaten here during daylight hours and sober. This review does not require you to be alcohol induced to believe! If there are other things you want me to recommend, I'd say the Mac and Cheese (adult size) and the sizzling steak plate. Everything here is under $10, btw. Since they are short staffed at night, I can't give these guys the 5 stars I so want to. There have also been days I've had smaller pieces of fish and chips (though still as tasty!) But trust me, this place is THE PLACE to be once the ugly lights turn on at whatever bar you're at in Waikiki.

************************** 598 **************************** 3 blocks from the beach, for local retirement crowds, but the food and drinks are so worth it to make a short walk here. - Sizzling steak with sauteed mushroom - $10 - a steal! - Fish tacos - so fresh. - Blacken Ahi - fresh and under $10! - Kalua pork quesadillas - delish! All tropical drinks are less than $6, happy hour is even cheaper!!! Impossible to find this cheap eats in Waikiki! Good service always!

I went in for happy hour. Was greeted right away. Its more of a local spot. Met a really nice local by the name of Bob. The bartender and waitress are chill and very talkative. Food I tried to order through happy hour and was told I had to wait tell 530pm when happy hour started at 4pm. So I was Bummed. I really wanted to try some of there food. BTW the pictures of the menus are old they are Lil more expensive then shown in the pictures people have taken. All in all good quite spot to grab a quick drink and relax.

Let me get this out of the way first: Happy Hour: 4pm-7pm and 11pm-close. Last call is at 3:30am. Check out their happy hour menu in the pictures Valet is free, with validation. Which is AWESOME since we're talking about parking in Waikiki. The place is never crowded. (for now...I have been witness to the power of Yelp) The mix drinks are yummy for the price. If you're a drinker, you know what I mean. hee hee I'm hooked on their Fish & Chips. Which I was told wasn't the frozen kind. The bartenders have always been nice and attentive. The customers up at the bar are all regulars, and always nice to make small talk with. My friend enjoys the Killer Cool Aid. Since she's right next to me, I'll ask for a quote, "Ho! f***in taste like Cool Aid. Wembley makes da best kine". (She thinks one of the bartenders looks like Wembley from Fraggle Rock; she loves Fraggle Rock so it's a compliment) In the end, I'm an easy person to please: Give me space to breathe, free parking, keep my drink filled, and feed me. So simple.

Been coming here recently because it's a new place my co-workers like to frequent to. Great, reasonable prices and service. It's super low-key, nice place for people like us (who get off work at around 2:30a.m.) to chill out, have a few drinks, and eat some pretty cheap but good food. $9/$10 for a sizzling steak with onions & mushrooms?! Had to order it. Gigantic Nachos that easily fed the 6 of us $8!? OMG. Kalua Quesadillas!? Yumm Yumm Yumm. Round of 6 shots less than $30!? One more round please!

  • Emma K.

I love the food here! More than enough choices, not all bar food and prices are decent. Their hours are great too; they serve food until 330/4 in the morning. The service however is shit (excuse my french). Unless you sit at the bar. They cant really handle a full house.

Just went in for drinks, didnt get food. Atmosphere was a bit dated for us and the crowd was older. Had a good selection of beers on tap but just not the type of crowd for me.

This place is pretty awesome. It's almost like an outside bar because it's open with no windows, but you still feel like you're inside as well (check it out to see what I mean!) The best night to go here is Thursday night (when it's pretty empty) because the drinks come a lot quicker and you get a seat at the bar (which is the best). One bartender there is really awesome! He's funny & quick & will make your experience worthwhile! I know this place is in Waikiki, but it's not as touristy as all the other bars closer to the beach. This place is right along the ala wai and is a calm, relaxing bar to go to. Try to make it during happy hour!

Fail 1. Waited 30 min before a waitress approached even after asking the guy at the bar for help 2. I had to bus our own table, yup, I cleared it and wiped it down myself with a baby wipe 3. She forgot something we ordered, the appetizer 4. She forgot to charge be for my beer too, oh well 5. Even besides all that, the service was poor 6. Small portions 7. It's a restaurant in a hotel, hard to find using google maps Good things 1. The food, get the fish and chips 2. Cheap drinks

I live next door to the sand bar, and I love the late night option! Nick is great behind the bar, and always gets our order right. Awesome Mac and cheese, and the steak platter is awesome, I always add tortillas and cheese. Always great neighborhood service. Love that they are open late, and always do a professional job.

This place is now my new watering hole haha. The sizzling steak platter with mushroom and onions, sooo gooooddddd. I found myself licking the plate of the onions and mushrooms, wanting more. I still can't get over how the bartender squeezes the orange for my blue moon. How little things go a long way! The happy hour specials here are awesome, and when its non-happy hour its still cheap! Check out their menu online. Oh yeah, if you park at the hotel, have the bartender validate it. ITS FREE! :O I'll be back my favorite Waikiki Bar!

Halloween night and i just finished work. Met some friends at cabanas but they closed at 2am. We weren't ready for the night to end so we headed to Sand Villa. The Sand Bar is open until 4am with food until 3am. A friend kept telling me how good the food was but i just never believed her. We came for drinks only usually, but tonight we were starved. From the looks of the place its a bar, a megatouch and some tables. Dim lighting but not in the romantic way... I wasn't expecting much of the food but was pleasantly surprised last night... 5 friends and i shared the following... * chicken nachos (a big hit) * wings - Asian style (delish!!!) * pork quesadillas * calamari (ehh) * blackened ahi (yes ahi at a bar... And the perfect pinkyred color) * cali roll Apparently the ahi salad is fabulous but wasn't in the mood for much healthy stuff at 3 am on Halloween.

Little known gem in the Sand Villa Hotel. The BEST calamari on the island. One of the few places that serves fresh calamari (not the frozen or formed ring variety). Yes you can taste the difference. It is light, crunchy and served with homemade horseradish cocktail sauce. And it's only $6.50!!!!!!!!!! We enjoy the steak pupu (sizzling), oysters on the half shell and especially the seared ahi (good quality and portion!) They offer other local favorites like Kahlua pork spring rolls (not too heavy like most places), shrimp potstickers, loco moco, poke. Their menu is extensive and everything is made from scratch. I should mention that I haven't tried much else on their menu.... I can't stop ordering that gosh darned delicious calamari! Strong drinks and two happy hours (4-7pm and 11-1am) Open till 4AM. Can we say service industry paradise? And still time to dance off the grindz! Honestly the mixed drinks are a little sweet for me and there are only 3 house wines available, but happy hour prices are $3 for mixed drinks, $3.75 for wine. Shochu is also available. I've had some mean $3 bloody Mary's. This place used to be popping after other bars close, but with the refurbished decor is an added air of decorum? OK, not so much. The wait staff is getting on past twilight. Park on the Ala Wai. They also have a webcam on their site so you can check out the scene before you go.... Oh yeah, did I say open until 4 AM?

Not a bad spot for late night and price reasonable. Service is inconsistence, depends on who you get as bartender (moody). Otherwise, I would give it another star.

In the area for some quick morning drinks and quick Loco Moco? Stop by Sand Bar in the Sand Villa Hotel and sit down relax. The bartender was very nice and friendly. We ordered the Loco Moco and Fish Tacos.. Was the best meal I had in a long while. Can't wait to go to hawaii again!

Stayed at the hotel in which this restaurant was location. We didn't eat here until the last day. We never saw many people in here for our 6 nights here. We ordered the chili and the loco moco. Loco Moco was a little overcooked and hard. I've had this once before and it was so moist and tender, not like this one. I'd give that actual dish.... 3 stars. Chili was better. I'd give it 4 stars! Probably would go somewhere else before we come here.

Happy Hour : 4-7pm = good place! Yummy guava rum drinks, fish tacos, fish & chips and kalua pork spring rolls. Yummm. We got 4 drinks, and 3 plates of food for 40$, not too bad. Cute little diner/bar restaurant.

Great place, full sports bar inside, really good fish and steak as advertised. Blackened ahi is tartar. The fish was Ono, sauce and presentation very good. Could go again. Big round tables outside, other guests welcomed us to join them. It is along the canal, which is peaceful, away from the crowds. We met a couple of veteran soccer players from Seattle, including Luis who was eating there every day, and he is a restaurant owner in renton wash (el Sabor latino)

This place was miserable. I came in and sat at the bar late one night to get some food and order a drink. The food was a little on the bland side, but the beef was tender and fresh so I still enjoyed it. The bartender, however, was ridiculously rude and condescending. This man talked to me like I didn't deserve to sit at the bar, as if he were paying ME to order drinks and food. He said hello to everyone else around but was terrible to me. The man sitting next to me described the bartender as an "industry" oriented bartender, meaning he's only nice to people who work in the service industry. How does that work? He works in downtown Honolulu and only expects to be nice to other "industry" members?! That's absurd. This type of attitude is absolutely rude, unacceptable, and unprofessional. If he can't treat people respectfully, perhaps he should move out of the service industry and find another career. I will not come back to this place because of this man alone, and I certainly will not recommend this place to anyone else.

  • Jen C.

Yelp rating is overrated to me. The drinks are average and food fried and fatty, that is why it's so cheap! But my husband said it was a good place to watch the game. Yes it does have that old Hawai'i feel to it, but I dunno, it felt more cheap and trashy to me! The bar is filled with a bunch of old men that I thought were constantly staring at me. I didn't think the drinks or the food were that great. Yes it's cheap but you get what you pay for.

We stayed at this hotel for a week, and tried this place, its right down in the lobby.. the teriyaki sandwich is delicious as well as the other foods all under $12 each order! Great deal! There is only one server so service is limited but overall great food and affordable prices!

Cheap drinks (you get bigger ones in plastic cups outside or at the pool) and food. The nachos are really good. The food isn't spectacular but it is flavorful and well worth the price. They only have small tables, so not so great for a group unless you sit at the bar.

Met some friends here who were staying at the Sand Villa and decided to get "primed" here before a night out. First thing I have to mention is that I don't care to come to Waikiki unless I have to play tour guide for friends or relatives. That being said, I took a cab here, so I don't know what the parking situation is, but there was a valet stand out front. The place is open air (no a/c) but a good breeze coming through and not too touristy. There were tables in the front and a large bar in the back with big screen TVs with ESPN on every channel. They also have free Wi-fi here. The place is clean, and the bathrooms are outside of the bar next to the front desk of the hotel. It was happy hour, so the drinks were cheap, especially for Waikiki. I ordered a Guiness and my friends all ordered Budweiser's and Jack and Cokes. The Guiness was the Draught (the one in the tall can) and was served with a chilled(!) glass. "Classy joint" I thought. My beer was $5, but the Jack and Cokes and Buds were only $3 during happy hour, So needless to say, I got a Jack and Coke next. The drinks were "real" here meaning that they were strong and definitely worth $3. I was calling them the "pain go bye bye juice" after the 2nd one. The happy hour ends at 7pm, but starts again at 11pm till 1am. Oh btw, they open till 4am! We decided to order some food and ordered Fresh Oysters, Fish and Chips, Fish Tacos and Nachos with Chicken. The prices were good (around $8-$11 each), and actually cheap for Waikiki. Now any establishment that has the guts to serve fresh oysters gets points with me. Most restaurants don't like to deal with them because they are a hassle (Keeping them cold, food poisoning risks, cost, etc.) so I had to order them. When they brought them, my mind=blown. There were 6 HUGE oysters on a half shell with lemon wedges and cocktail sauce. The waitress even asked if I wanted some grated horseradish with that. BONUS POINTS! Needless to say, I'mma starting to likey this place. The Fish and Chips were cooked perfectly. 4 big fish sticks with standard fries served in a basket. The fish was moist on the inside and the beer batter was flakey on the outside. Definitely fresh made and not the frozen kind. Superb. The Fish Tacos were ok. 2 tacos with fresh mahi served in a flour tortilla with lettuce and salsa with sour cream and guacamole on the side. Not as good as the better taco trucks, but good. The Nachos were also ok. Piled high, and not skimpy on the toppings. Nachos are the safe pick at a bar and these were no exception. So I was surprised at the prices and quality here, but I had no expectations of this place, but I will definitely be back here even though me and Waikiki have been on the "outs". We're still friends though.

Technically my 1st taste of Hawaii. If you're going to be stuck in Waikiki, this place is open late, poke tuna is decent, prices are reasonable, and the seedy late night riff-raff don't seem to hang out here so it's nice place to chill.

Not a whole lot to say about dinner here. The food was tasty...I had the mahi mahi fish and chips and she had the mahi mahi sandwich. Both were good but the service was poor. Took forever to get a refill on my iced tea then they charged me a "refill" fee of a buck. Seriously?

Oysters very fresh, tasty condiments. Other traditional bar food, great prices. Happy hour and outstanding draft beer choices.
