4.5 stars :) Mmm.. I bought #6 which consists of 2 pasteles and gandule rice. I meant to save it for dinner but once I took a bite of the pastele... ooh.. I just couldn't stop! The pastele is about the size of a dollar bill.. it was soft, flavorful, and it had just the right amount of pork in it. I found the taste absolutely addictive. I will definitely be back. My plate was $9.80 or somewhere around that ballpark. Not bad, considering the portions are generous and tasty. The lady was nice too. She saw my gigantic bulging wallet full of coins and asked if I wanted to use some coins instead of my 1's. A true win-win situation :)

I've been a repeat customer to this place for years and although I prefer my Auntie's ones, these come in second bestest just for being ready when ever I want some. The #3 is my favorite and I like hanging out and eating there just so I can cruise and not be in a rush. I really love the gandule rice even though I'd like it a litle more spicy and the bacalao salad is hit and miss, sometimes too salty, smetimes it's just right. All around it's Auright!!!

I have been coming here for years and I have watched the price go up & up each year. The reason I come back over and over is this.... When the Pasteles are on they are ON. But there is inconsistency, some times you'll get a soggy mess of a Pastele that tastes great but is soggy as hell. On the other hand you MOST of the time get a all around great Pastele. The fried chicken & Pastele lumpia are amazing all the time! Try them. Also, if your getting take out CHECK your order!! The ladies that work there although nice are highly forgetful and disorganized.

I've been going to the Pastele Shop for a long time. I was first introduced to pasteles years ago by my friend Walter Tamashiro, when he used to bring them to us from his market in Kalihi when we were performing at Opus One in the Ilikai. When they stopped selling them at Tamashiro's, I could not find anyplace else that was anywhere near the taste of Tamashiro's ....until the Pastele Shop. No matter the cost, I'll always go there for my pastele fix.

I love this place. It's in a ghetto area and the parking sucks but their pasteles are amazing and their gandule rice is good too. They have amazing pastele lumpia.

The Pastele Shop used to always be at the new products show / new food show that they have at the blaisdell. That is how I found out about this hole in the wall in Kalihi with awesome food!! The #5 (pastele and gondoule rice) is a must have!! I'm not really sure what is in the pastele... but it is basically like a green banana / carb ish outside .. maybe like the puerto rican version of a tamale and on the inside there are usually olives and shredded pork. The rice is very tasty ... not really sure what is in the rice either but it is delicious!! There is a sitting area inside the shop, but I usually just do takeout. Don't forget to snag yourself some banana lumpia with your order!

This was my first ever experience at trying pasteles and my o my SO DELISH! My BF, being Puerto Rican himself, was quick to inform me that their food was very good and authentic. Restaurant itself is a dive and the area is pretty sketch, but overall a great lunch. I ordered the #5 which consisted of one Pastele, a generous scoop of gandule rice and they even threw in a slice of homemade bread pudding! The portions were huge! that plate alone coulda fed a small African country. Needless to say a takeout box was in my future. We also ordered the pastele lumpia. It was packed full of meat and ONLY meat! My inner meat-eating cave woman was very satisfied! Owners are beyond friendly. It feels just like you are in their own kitchen and they make every effort to make your dining experience one of a kind. A must go for anyone interested in trying a puerto rican staple.

Just moved here and was craving for pastele. At here lastnight and it was amazing. Great customer service. Will definitely come back for sure.

Pastele. Say it with me: pa-telly. "What happened to the 's'?", you're probably asking. Who cares. The only thing you need to know is that pasteles, which are like Puerto Rican tamales, are awesome. And the place to get them is at the Pastele Shop, because they make some bangin' pasteles. I got the spicy pasteles, and the pastele stew (matude), both of which were extremely tasty and left me wanting more. The pasteles weren't too spicy, although I wish they were because I like some heat. The matude is like Cajun dirty rice. My girl got the bacalao salad, which has cod fish in it, and it was pretty good. It was a little weird at first, because I don't normally have fish in my salad. But it's sorta like preserved/salted fish that's shredded and added on top of the greens. Sorta like bacon bits, but from the ocean. A little on the pricey side, especially for comfort food, but it's worth your coin.

Four very solid stars because this USED to be my favorite place for Puerto Rican food. Their pasteles are good, one of the best if it wasn't for Taste Of Puerto Rico in ewa. The gandule rice is decent, pretty good, but then again falls short when compared to TOPR. Parking can be a real nightmarebut I always find where to park. Their prices are a bit on the expensive side but their portions are pretty big. Oh yeah almost forgot to mention that their bacalao salad is very good. That's the only item that tastes better than Taste Of Puerto Rico. Go giveit a shot, guaranteed, you'll visit again.

My opu is so happy! I cannot tell you what a treat this was. Meat pie with buttery crust, banana lumpia, stew, pastele hot, chorizo sausage, and pastele lumpia were all super yummy. A real treat was the staff who were super friendly!! Yay, another hot deal treat!

My coworkers turned me on to this place and MMmmmmm!!! Love their pastele! I think we go there almost every week, since everyone's on a budget these days! The pasteles are filled...a piece of pork in almost every bite, it's always fresh, hot and nicely moist, always has at least one whole olive. We get the #9 spicy which is only $4.95 - that's one pastele and two scoops white rice - altho I really only need one scoop rice my coworker licks her plate clean. I've had thinner pastele's in the past, or ones with little to no meat in them, but these will not disappoint! They are about 3/4 to an inch thick. =) Been dying to try their fried chicken...it looks so good in the case. My coworkers like the banana lumpia (I'm not a banana fan). One day when I'm not in a pastele mood I'll have to try the other items they have. We used to call it in and someone would to the lunch run, but recently we've been eating there. Nothing fancy inside, it's relatively clean and has a/c. Where can you find a filling plate lunch for five bucks these days...winnahz!!

  • Dawn G.

Ok peeps - I made a special trip down here expecting some awesome pasteles but I got a plate of mush. The ONLY thing I liked was the fact that the bacalao salad was in a separate container on the side so it was nice and cold and didn't get wilted. The lady was nice but she had a big pit bull in the kitchen. Maybe she needs protection in that area, I don't blame her. Level of meat inside - 2 small teeny weeny pieces, one olive and....mushy stuff. I'll have to stick with my neighborhood ladies pasteles.

2 star review because I've experienced better from them. I remember when they used to bring their product to the Blaisdell for the Made in Hawaii Festival. We haven't seen them for a while and haven't tried their pastele and gandule rice because it was so expensive the last time. Tried it for take out today and the pastele is not the same one we remember. It was very mushy and had barely any meat. I don't remember it being so soggy before. Same for the gandule rice which I used to love, love, love. It was a little mushy too. I went to their store and 4 pastele and a large gandule with meat (very little meat), two banana lumpia, and one meat lumpia was about $30. I wanted so much to love it because I haven't found a pastele and gandule rice as good as they USED to make. Two stars because it was pretty pricey.

  • Rita L.

my hubby got a plate frome here. $8 for 2 pastele and and gandule rice! I thought it was pretty descent...I've had better, but its not bad at all! Give it a try!

    (3)
  • Karin V.

Pastele (HOT) was tasty. The gandule rice was tasty as well, but i like my gandule rice with more olives AND with a little more personality. I would return but the parking sucks big time. I also tried the pastele lumpia - a very ingenious way to serve pastele (1.85). This was a great appetizer -- it satisfied my taste buds while I drove.

    (4)
  • Miko S.

Ok, to be completely honest, I haven't had pastele anywhere else but here... so, I can't really compare it. However, I did have their pastele on a bunch of occasions and I was never disappointed. I think it's really tasty and always served super hot and fresh. The only disappointment is it is a little expensive. They cost $3.75 each, but if you want a plate (served with rice and salad) it can go up to $12.75.

  • Barrie H.

I USED to love the Pastele Shop but a stop there this afternoon has made me rethink my pastele shop passion. At $3.85 a pastele I expected my pastele to be even better! Boy was I ever wrong!! My pasteles were soggy, mushy, lumps without the taste that I had become accustomed to. I don't know if the recipe, the cook, or the ingredients have changed but I can honestly say that in this case, change is NOT GOOD! I will be sure to read the reviews before deciding to visit the Pastele Shop in the future, if ever again. What a sad disappointment. :(

  • Lilian N.

I haven't been to this place in awhile, but the last time I was there it was as good as I remember...the gandules rice and pasteles were tasty, however was surprised that the prices have increased so much! I definitely agree that this place is a pioneer for pasteles on the island, but I have since tried an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant (in Ewa) with my Puerto Rican bf and realized that the Pastele shop is ALMOST as good as the real thing. First off, can everyone please say "pastele" correctly? The "s" IS NOT silent, as a puerto rican native will think you have a speech impediment. LOL all kidding aside, I guess we all grew up saying it as "patele" so if you did pronounce the "s" most locals might think you're saying it wrong too. Either way, once you have authentic puerto rican food made by puerto rican natives it is really tough to deviate from it.

From the exterior, one would never guess that deliciousness lurks behind the glass doors of this restaurant. The restaurant itself is very small and seating is limited but you can tell by the in and out traffic of continuous take out orders that this place is worth the wait. This is hands down the best pastele shop on Oahu! Get the gandule rice and pickled onions with your pasteles. Yummy!!

  • Ryan A.

This is place is tucked away along N School St. However, it is really worth the time to find it. The prices are little on the high side, average of $9, but the food is great. There aren't many places in Hawaii that can serve up pasteles like this place! Definitely a must visit!

    (4)
  • Kimo U.

Price for a pastele went up a tad since my last visit. Needed to get my patele (or pastele) fix. Stopped in for one, take out. Simply the best, still. The hot is not really hot enough for me, but it was satisfyingly greasily filling. Will probably never eat in, but continue stopping in periodically to grab one or two of their sensational pateles. Therefore, I'll probably never have an opinion on their combos.

Other than the parking the place is amazing the pastele are delicious can request it to be either spicy our mild the grandule rice compliments it along with the baculao salad..you get your food very quick.if you blink you may miss this place its a small hole on the wall but well worth the stop if you like pastele

This is a spot I try to hit. It's a local favorite. The Gandule rice is 2nd to none. It's one of my most favorite foods there. I'm not a big fan of the pastele, but I've had others and they don't compare. If you're looking for a high end place to visit this is NOT it. If you're looking for good local food at good prices walk in and feel at home.

Ordered the #4 plate, which is pastele stew on rice with choice of salad ($8.95). I opted for gandule instead of white rice for $1.00 more, and the potato mac salad. The pastele stew had olives, a bit of celery, and pork. There were a few pieces of fat, but there was enough meat to make it enjoyable for me. The stew was savory, and the gandule reminded me a little of spanish rice, also nicely seasoned and tasty. The only down side for me was the reddish, oily film remaining at the bottom of the plate when I had finished my meal. Of course, many types of stews containing pork will have their share of fat, and one needs to remember that when ordering a dish like this. The potato mac salad was just OK, a little bland as there didn't seem to be anything else besides the mayonnaise to flavor it. I also had a fried banana lumpia ($.85) which was a tasty way to end the meal. Overall, a little pricey, but the food was very tasty and the portion was fairly big. I'm sure I will be back.

  • Candy D.

The pastele is standard but definately yummy if you're trying to feed a hungry tummy. The real menu item that is worth the trek to The Pastele Shop is the pastry puff with the pastele filling. If they have any left it's usually behind the glass with the pieces of fried chicken and the eggrolls.

  • Lorna M.

Had some today... I thought it was good. It wasn't OMG good but it was good. I'd go back again... I was told to have their lumpia... Haven't done it yet but when i do, you can be sure to get a comment from me.

  • Grimeater A.

A decent sized plate here is pretty pricey, $8-10 if you have a decent appetite. The pastele are pretty good, however I recommend the mild ones with tabasco. The spicy ones have a weird dry heat that I can't stand. The gandule rice is too dry for my tastes but I love the simplicity of the bacalao salad. Worth a visit if you are craving pastele and your budget permits.

  • Lena H.

my friend and i tried this place today..it was my first time here and i thought it was pretty good, BUT the pastele was really salty. it would've gotten a better rating if it wasn't so salty. the gandule rice was good and the banana thing like lumpia was really good.. not sure what the proper name is. but that was the best!

    (3)
  • Javier C.

Pastele are some sort of Puerto Rican tamale, made of plantains.. the problem here in Hawaii is that for some reason they make them only with olives. Supposed to have pork or beef inside. Served with yellow rice and pigeon peas with small portion of bacalao salad on the side.

  • Corey A.

A little late on this review but as the old saying goes... Here we go... From start to finish this place is good! Pastels stew has got to be one of my hands down favorite dishes here. Followed closely by the bacalao salad and their fried chicken. Very friendly service that made us feel like long lost family.

Parking is limited but usually there's a spot open. Pasteles on tap can't get any better than that.

My fav place to get my pastele and gandule rice fix. The pastele has great flavor and texture. Also must try the pastele lumpia-very filling and the fried chix is tasty too.

Omg!! I love pastele !! I remember when they use to cost $2.50 per pastele, Now it cost $4.40 per pastele. Let me tell you they are worth every penny!! The Pastele's are sooo sooo yummy!! They remind me of the Pastele shop in Maui I use to go to growing up. Thank you Pastele shop!!

Omg no way not the real anything. The Pasteles are bland, the Gandule Rice bland, the cod fish salad omg bland... Drive to Wainiae side and go to Mailii Pastele Shop then you post and tell me... It's worth the drive

Hands down my favorite place to get Pastele. I usually will go and buy the frozen ones and take home. It's now about $4.50 one. It definitely comes in handy when I don't have time to cook dinner. It tastes good after you just microwave it. The parking for this shop is really small. But if I ever find myself near School Street, I definitely like to stop by and get me some. The staff is always really nice. I've never had a bad experience. If you want good Pastele I recommend this place.

  • Milly C.

What is a pastele? I still have no idea, really. If you've tried Chinese food, it's similar to "jung zi" (mochi rice with various types of beans and meat). I ordered a spicy pastele with gandule rice and salad (one of the combos). GET THE SPICY PASTELE. It's not too spicy (for those that cannot spicy - try this anyway!) and the flavors dance a happy dance on your tongue. The gandule rice (Spanish rice, same thing) is super good as well! The flavors really stand out and combined with the spicy pastele, this combo makes my tummy go whoooo hooo! If I could, I would pass the salad though. It's interesting, but the pastele and gandule rice are the stars of this small hole-in-the-wall. The decor is severely lacking here, but you come here for the food, not the atmosphere. Service is super friendly; don't be afraid to ask if you don't know what an item on the menu is! Other pluses: lots of free parking, funny sign about free calling to jails outside. :)

When you think of restaurants in Hawaii, you wouldn't expect many to serve Puerto Rican food. And yet there is a surprising amount of places that do. This is in part to the immigration of Puerto Rican workers in the early 20th century to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations. And bringing along their cuisine with them. As a result, you can find pasteles on the menu in many local restaurants in Hawaii. And yet, I never had a single pastele in my life even though I grew up in the islands. I decided to rectify that by checking out The Pastele Shop. This hole in the wall eatery is located on North School Street, two blocks west of Kam Shopping Center in Kalihi. It is located on the left side. There is parking in front of the shop. Beware that the parking is slanted on a hill. The interior is no frills. The counter is right in front with a few tables in the back to eat if you are dining in. The food here is local style Puerto Rican food. There are a couple Puerto Rican restaurants in Seattle and the offerings are different than what is found here. There isn't any mofongo here for instance. The main offering here are the pasteles as the namesake indicates along with a few other items. Pasteles are similar to Mexican tamales and joong, the Chinese rice dumpling. They are wrapped in banana (or is it ti?) leaves and steamed. I got two pasteles which were about $4 each and a bowl of pastele stew ($4.95). The pasteles here were flavorful and the pork is tender. Having tried this for the first time, it did look and taste like a tamale. There was no discernible difference. The only issue with the pastele is that they are quite oily. So make sure to grab a napkin to use after unwrapping. I got the pastele stew for my dad, but I did get a little taste of it. It was delicious as well and much less messy than getting a pastele. It reminds me of Cuban picadillo. If you are looking for a hearty meal, get this. If you are interested in what localized Puerto Rican food in Hawaii tastes like, The Pastele Shop is a good place to start.

The only othere pastelle that we like is from the guys selling out of Kaneohe. We truly like the food here, and the prices are excellent. I enjoy the rice a bit better from the Kaneohe guys, but it's almost equally yummy at this place though. OK, not I'm hungry, going to eat here for lunch today for sure!!!

  • Janet K.

I don't know where else to get pasteles from besides here, on the side of the street from someone selling it out of a truck or homemade from someone other than me. I must say that I've tasted the homemade version and it was way tastier than this place. I like the pasteles here but I wish the spicy had more kick. Like, make my damn nose runny kind of kick! Also, the rice was on the drier side. Maybe I'll try the pastele stew next. *cash only

  • Michelle T.

They never disappoint. They have the best pastele and grandule rice I've had on this island so far, perfect portion size for the price. It just melts in your mouth like butter. Cravings satisfied as always!

My best friend since the 1st grade is the 1st person who introduced me to pasteles. She also lived right across the street for me so I would go over to her house often and mostly because there was always something good at her house. Always! She has always been a picky eater but pastel was something she liked and so was gandule rice. So my recent visit to California, I stood with my friend who is also Puerto Rican, speaks fluent Spanish and comes from a long line of INCREDIBLE cooks (I can vouch) recently had come back from visiting family in Puerto Rico and brought back homemade pasteles made by his grandmother. So when I walked downstairs to his mother asking me if I liked pasteles, I immediately said yes because I haven't had one in so long. Not really thinking about how great this pastele might be because it's homemade and it's from his family I took my first bite and fell in LOVE! A few people say food is to a man's heart but no one says anything about food being to a woman's heart! Coming back to O'ahu I craved pasteles and knew that the best ones had to come homemade but again, I'm wrong. I was on Yelp, wandering around and found that someone reviewed the Pastele Shop and I'm thinking to myself, aw man.. But she reviewed it with 4 stars and sure enough, the business had 4 stars. So I'm thinking to myself that I should just try it out because I've spoken to a few people who talked about getting really good pasteles and one was in Waipahu and the other one in Kalihi and this must be the one! I don't know much about the origination of this restaurant but it is a gem. Everyone should stop judging places by it's location and the looks of it from the outside because what they serve is pure delight. I ate my food during traffic because I couldn't wait anymore. Once I took tat first bite, I had to stop and savor every second. It's packed with pork and i love the black olives. You can also get them spicy! If you're ever in town and craving pasteles, stop at the Pastele Shop!

For me, this is the standard by which all pasteles are measured...and yes, I've been lucky enough to try homemade "grandma's recipe" pasteles from more than a few sources!! Not only are the Pastele Shop's pasteles super tasty & just the right texture, but I absolutely love that they offer a MILD-version (for spice-wussies like me). I usually get mine to-go, and smother it with shredded lettuce & sour cream at home...I'm not sure why, but that's how my mom's always done it. Another great option here is to get frozen pasteles, which are perfect for long-term storage or travel. Last but not least, if you've never tried their pastele lumpia, you really owe it to yourself to try. Seriously, all of that pastele goodness PLUS it's deep-fried & crunchy?? Yes please!! =) Okay, so maybe it's not a good idea to eat this on a daily basis...but sometimes you just need to reward yourself with one of these babies. Or two, if you've been especially good...and I know you have been, right? 0=)

When you need pastele, head straight to The Pastele Shop! Nice shop with friendly staff but more importantly delicious goodies to go with your pastele including gaundule rice. Awesome neighborhood spot!

Gandule rice and hot pasteles are simply the best. But the true hidden treasure are the fried chicken! Go early, they always sell out!

This place has the best pasteles I've ever had. You can dine in or take out, though I've only ever taken out. Service is friendly and the food is great- although TBH I've only had the pasteles, lumpia, and rice. All fantastic. Going to try the cod salad, chorizo, turnover, and soup this time :)

I've been coming here for a few years now. I get the #2 combo plate = 1 pastele + gandule (pigeon pea) rice + bacalao (dried, salted cod) salad. Had that for lunch today. Now $9.95. As I recall, it is not too long ago that this place was more. More meat in the pastele, more taste, more quantity, and more inexpensive. OK. But now, for me, once in a while is soon enough.

  • Tammie C.

BEST pastele and gandule rice I've tried on the island so far. Hubby and I also love their fried chicken. Not sure what kind of seasoning they use but it's winners. We always share a plate of their pastele, gandule rice and a piece of fried chicken. (See picture). Location is in a not so savory area, and parking is a little tight. They have a small area to eat inside, but we always just take our food there to go.

  • Antoinette C.

I've been eager to try to this place for a while and I'm glad that I did because their food is yummy. I ordered 2 #6 plates which is the two pasteles with gandule rice. I could taste chicken, pork, a tiny bit of fish, and diced olives in there. I find it odd that there is one whole olive out of the entire pastele. Then again, I'm not a big fan of gigantic olives. The gandule rice gives the meal a nice kick and it's definitely worth the high price, but I only had a little bit of it left over for dinner. I tried pairing a pastele with regular white rice that was cooked at home and it wasn't the same. The gandule rice had a nice savory kick that regular white rice doesn't even have. Decent portions + a nice hot meal x lots of leftovers = one very happy customer :) P.S. CASH ONLY! P.S.S Yes parking sucks, so you're better off walking...besides that's free exercise and it's healthy :)

  • Randoll C.

I'm not a fan of bananas. Not that I won't eat them, I just won't go out of my way to. If given the choice, I wouldn't - but if I'm hungry and it's all there is, I will. Man - but I do love pasteles! Growing up, the pastele was one of my mom's incentive items to get me to behave. And because I can't find the pastele on the mainland, having one, or more on this trip home, was a no brainer. If you're looking for this place, don't blink as you get to Gulick otherwise you'll miss it. Or, keep an eye out for the sign, just like in the business photo on the main page for this place. Parking is confusing but just know that you can park in the unmarked lot next door. Also, when you walk in, if no one is at the counter/register, there's a buzzer to call upon them. So, I ordered a #5, Gandule Rice, Pastele (hot) which also comes with a sliver, well, just bigger than a sliver, of banana bread cake. Sat down, took my pic and dug in. Normally I prefer my pastele not so soggy but because of how it's prepared and cooked, consistency doesn't matter to me too much. It's the taste that will get me or not. I ordered hot, and it wasn't. Maybe I should have emphasized really hot but nevertheless, I enjoyed it as well as the rice. I do wish I could find pasteles in Southern California. But I don't mind coming home for some things - the Pastele being one of them.

Oh how I have missed you Puerto Rican food! Haven't had it in a while and I was craving it so I decided to swing by after heading home in traffic. I think I just wanted to look forward to something after getting through the hellish traffic. I ordered a pint of Gandule Rice and two Hot pasteles. I was so excited as my truck now smelled of pasteles and rice. I kind of wanted to rip the bags open and eat it while in traffic but I didn't. Got home heated it up and oh my gosh the pastele was huge! I ate the pastele and about a cup of rice all to myself. Ono! The Pastele Shop is a hole in the wall type of place but sometimes those are the best places! I went right before they were closing and the cashier helped me pretty quickly. Delicioso!

This is my go to pastele stop. I will get the 2 pastels palte with gandule rice and bacalao salad. I also get the banana lumpia. It's always crispy and fresh. I make sure to take home cold pasteles for later. I usually freeze them and they are just as good when you want to eat them another day.

My first trip here since I heard from many friends to try this place. It's a small space that makes some very delicious "Pasteles" OMG YUMMMM!!! I ordered the #6 which is 2 Pasteles SPICY with gandule rice. I swear I cannot just eat ONE haha staff was nice

Taste of pastele was kind of strange for someone who hasn't eaten it before. I didn't understand why the four scoops of rice with mushy paste costed me $12. Food wasn't hot either. Salad was all lettuce with little bits of tomato and mystery salted fish meat. Eat here if you want to carbo load and lose money.

I'm a Puerto Rican from New York, and every Christmas I look forward to my grandmother making pasteles. When I found out my husband was being stationed in Hawaii, I was so upset that my mom wouldn't be able to mail me pasteles at Christmas time. I happened upon the Pastele shop while looking for places to eat close by, and I made it a point to stop in and order some comfort food. I was not disappointed!!!! They were just as good as my grandmother's pasteles, AND I don't have to wait until Christmas to have them! I ordered the 2 pasteles with rice lunch plate, and it was more than filling (half of it is going to be my lunch tomorrow). We also had banana lumpia (which I haven't seen since we were stationed in Guam) and pastele lumpia. Both were outstanding. Overall, this place did not disappoint! I will be a regular for sure.

One of the awesome hole in the wall local grind spot. They serve authentic legit Puerto Rican food. It's a great spot to grab some breakfast or lunch. The atmosphere itself is not so easy and appealing to the eyes but, don't let that change your perspective on trying their food. If you're a first timer you must try their pastele stew, ham hock soup, gandule rice with pastele, and their delicious, flaky pandejas it's the .com I myself order the #6 with 2 pandejas on the side. So if you're craving some authentic Puerto Rican cuisine come down at the Pastele Shop.

GUYS. DIS PLACE! I've been ordering Pastele, lumpia, and gandule rice from here for years! Whenever I have to go back to the mainland I drop about $50 each time so I can take as many pastele as I can back with me because life is just not life without them! I also LOVE their panadesas, but whenever I go now they don't have them... Whatevaz, saves me money for more hot pasteles.

While vacationing In HI, I heard that there was a pasteles shop. So being from PR, I had to go and check the place out. It is truly a hole in the wall and my review is strictly for the pasteles. If you are in Hawaii, this is the best you are going to get, they are really good. They are made only with green banana, no yautia, but they are good. the meat is seasoned well and they have spicy or mild. I had the spicy one and I liked it. (she actually offered me ketchup, so you know they one what we like, LMAO) The owner was amazing, had a long conversation with her. Her mom started the shop and they have been here for 24 years. her mom was chinese, but knew puertoricans who had emigrated in the 50's to Maui. I knew there was a large population of boricuas in the island from the 50's. Really amazing that they have made a living out of selling pasteles. So for all those Boricua soldiers and families stationed in Hawaii, go check the place out. She actually will sell you the masa, and the meat, without being wrapped, in case you want to make your own at home. So you can cheat and go get the masa for your next Xmas Holiday, I would add some yautia and then you will get the real thing (don't understand what they don't use it, since yautia (taro) is in abundance in the island). Anyways, go support the local business who is supporting our culture and go get some pasteles from the pastel shop. PS: They make what they call, pastel stew, which is basically the middle of the pastel-basically the meat, they served it over rice. I was curios about this stew, since I never heard of it. Fabulous!

Love the spicy pastele plate that include bacalao salad! WINNER! Not as hot as I like my pastele, but wonderful take-out and fast! The prices keep going up, but I'm still loyally buying my Puerto Rican food here.

I booked marked this place months ago...I wanted to try it ever since a few yelp buddies said that it was a good place to check out... Ok, been there...done that...can I get a t-shirt or something? Since it was my first time, I ordered the #1--1 Pastele, Gandule Rice, Bacalao Salad and a Chorizo... The first thing that comes to mind is how salty everything seemed. I was looking for something that would have the perfect balance of flavors...with the smokiness of the pork, the tang of the olives, and the tell-tale garbanzo...but it seems that these arent ingredients in the Hawaiian version of these Boriqua delicacies. They use BLACK olives! No Garbanzos but a whole lot of salt... The bacalao salad was meh...getting soggy way too quickly but also lacking any real flavor. I was really hoping that this would be different... Will I come here again? Probably not. Looks like I'm gonna have to pull up a recipe and make an attempt to do this all on my own.

If I had a Puerto Rican Grandma, I imagine her kitchen would smell like The Pastele Shop. Our trips here are consistent: eyes glazed over, mumble 1/2 dozen hot pastele please, fork over some cash and book it home to unwrap the foiled delights -- followed with "OMG its ****'n amazaballs!" It's a little off the beaten path but definitely worth the trip. Parking is a squeeze but a available. Get more than you think you want cause you'll wish you had "leftovers".

My friend and I went here today for lunch, well I got mine to go (so I could have dinner at work) & she ate her plate there. First thing that I can say is their pasteles are HUGE! They're double the size of the ones you normally see (width wise) words can't even describe how AMAZING those pasteles are. The lady that helped is was super nice and even came over to explain their new banana lumpia it sounded amazing but unfortunately didn't have any cash on me ): The only thing I didn't like was the rice, however I'm really picky about how my rice is made and I like my rice super moist (the rice want on the dry side, I just like my rice really most). This is my only compliant thou. Will definitely be a returning customer!(: **btw I didn't forget to take a pic, I was going too take a pic after I took a bite but that didn't happen because after the first bite I couldn't stop eating lol

  • Wade N.

The food here is consistent. Always very good. The pastele is grated nice and fine which accounts for the smooth consistency. Flavor is really good, but the spicy could be a little hotter. Bottom line, if you're looking for a really good pastele, gandule rice, and bacalao salad plate. You won't go wrong here.

It's definitely easy to miss this place, it has a dive-y, hole in the wall, family owned kinda feel to it. There are tables to sit at, and the lady behind the counter was super friendly. It's an experience, for sure, if you've never had pasteles! Which I hadn't. I had no idea what to expect! We had the stew on gandule rice, and pastele with gandule rice and a bacalao salad. It was super tasty, but everything was a little too salty for my family's tastes. The bacalao salad was especially interesting, with bits of dried fish or something in it! I actually wasn't such a fan of the salad, unfortunately. But get the pasteles for sure--and the gandule rice is also delish. Just make sure you ask for big glasses of water to quench your thirst after the sodium! And banana lumpia--YUM.

I was craving pasteles so bad on my last trip home & i found this place on yelp. Passed it a million times back in my Kamehameha Schools days, working in Kalihi and catching the city bus everywhere lol. Apparently this shop has been open since the 80s! This place was easy to find, has a little parking lot & there a few tables inside that you can eat at. My family and I ordered the #6 (2 pasteles w/gandule rice), pastele stew, ham hock bean soup, banana lumpia and pastele lumpias. Everything was so 'ONO! The portions were really great. It hit the spot & I am definitely going back when go visit my family.

I heart the Pastele Lumpias and the Pastele Stew in a Bowl with rice. YUM! The pastele lumpia is flavorful with a wonderful crispy skin..it can be greasy so I normally just let it sit on a napkin before I bite into it. MMM my mouth is watering just thinking about these $2 delights. Sometimes I buy a bunch and share with coworkers, I cut them in half because they're huge. The Pastele Stew Bowl is out of this world! I'm sure it's full of fat and oil because the rice underneath is soaked but wow this bowl packs a huge punch of flavor. I love love love these dishes! I think I ordered the fried chicken or other stuff once but never bothered to order them again because I fell in love with my faves big time. I can't say I've had Puerto Rican food before but I'm in love with these flavors. The parking lot can be tricky, it's small and next to other small businesses, so it can get full. It's also counter style so you'll have to order take out. Been coming here for at least a couple of years now, hope it's still around for years to come!

This is my favorite pastele place on the island! Everybody's been saying TOPR is the most authentic, well then I guess I'm a fan of the fake stuff! Their pasteles are the best and so is their bacalao salad, the best on the island!

  • Shawnalyn M.

Horrible! DO NOT GO HERE! The worst pastele and guandule I have ever tried. I got 3 spicy pastele and a large guandule rice with meat to go for lunch today. $25 bucks pricy for a place that looked like a dump, but it had good reviews and i was craving pastele so i figured I would try it. I'm puerto rican and I make this stuff all the time, I also tried many other puertorican restaurants and other people's pasteles. I was shocked that the food was so bad. The pastele had no taste, was under cooked, and the rice was Terrible! I was starving and I still couldn't eat half of the pastele. My husband is a big eater and will eat almost anything but it was so bad the he too only took a few bites. I will never go here again!

The pastele shop in Kalihi is one of the few strictly Puerto Rican restaurants in Oahu, and is better known than most. I've been a few times and I've never been impressed by anything in particular, nothing is bad, it just doesn't stand out compared to a lot of other places. Their pasteles are well made and pretty consistent, I would say they are above average. I didn't care for their gandule rice, it seemed like just orange looking rice... It didn't taste bad, wasn't mushy, but I've had a lot better. Their panadilla lumpia was unique, I liked it but I wish they made regular panadillas, I don't think the filling goes well with lumpia, it's too flakey. Overall I would go if I was in the area and craved Puerto Rican food, they serve up pretty consistent food and it will definitely hit the spot if you're into Puerto Rican food.

YUM! This is definitely my comfort food. I imagine eating my Pastele Plate at home in my pajamas, in front of the television watching Fresh Prince, or Friends reruns... I remember the first time I ever tried The Pastele Shop was at a Food and New Products Show. I've been a fan ever since! The Pasteles and Gandule rice here are by far the tastiest I've eaten. I usually order the Pastele Plate that comes with white rice because I like to eat my Pasteles with White. And I order the Gandule rice on the side. Mouth watering just thinking about it. Small parking lot, but I've never had any trouble. The ladies working are so nice, but be sure to ring the bell for service when you've made up your mind or you'll be waiting, waiting, waiting...

FIVE STARS FOR #5 (pastele and gonduole rice)!!!!! Yes, this is my favorite item on the menu because there are my two favorite items. I think pastele is an acquired taste because my mom really doesn't like it but my sister and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! Even though it looks like horse poo, who cares! it is so tasteyyyyyyyy! The gonduole rice is DELICIOUS as well! This place is kinda like that hole in the wall type restaurant that has orgasmic tasting food. Sometimes I will purchase an quart size of gonduole rice to just nom on cause i am that addicted to the rice. If you want to eat in, there are a couple of seats to eat at, however, i usually like to take out and eat. One time i picked up and went to a park with my friend...what a great time/meal! Aside from the food, the service is so nice! The lady who helped me yesterday was the type of person who is so courteous that it makes you want to buy more and more, yes i am such a sucker for nice people. A++ for the pastele shop!

The best pastele in Kalihi. Pastele, gandule rice and chorizo is my fave! The location is a bit sketchy but not too bad during the day... Parking is a pain but well worth it. There is a small dining area inside. It's kinda funny...I went today at about 3:00, it looked like they just finished mopping the floor so the inside was still very wet...including the area by the cashier. The family that was ahead of me had been planning to eat their food there...the cashier's reply was...sure only if you promise not to fall. All in all...one of the best "fast" pastele places around...definitely worth trying out.

I love Puerto Rican food. Have had pasteles since I took my first step so have tried many types. Their pasteles are average tasting, still missing the perfect spice combination. Not the best tasting but good. It's a centrally located so easy to stop by when in the mood. The best plate is the pastele stew/pastele combination plate. Price is a bit above average but when you crave pastele, you just have to have it.

Yay, thanks to a Hot Deals Hawaii voucher I had bought last year, I was "forced" to try The Pastele Shop. Of course, I wouldn't have bought it, unless I really wanted to try it...so the offer helped me out a lot. I've never tried Puerto Rican fare prior to coming to this establishment so it was definitely a treat for me. It is located in Kalihi, which is out of the way for most people, but it is definitely worth it. Trust me, with all I hear about Kalihi, I was a little skeptic to drive to this place...but it's not bad at all! It's about two blocks down from Kamehameha Shopping Center, and there's a few parking spaces located out in front. Upon entering, I definitely did not know what to order. However, the lady behind the counter was so sweet and helpful, she definitely helped me decide what to order. The pasteles are definitely their must get...however, they also have pastele stew, where the gravy and meat that's usually inside the pastele is served over rice, as well as pastele and banana lumpia and panadesa (which is the pastele meat dried from the gravy in a puff pastry like thing). With her assistance, and my need to spend my $20 voucher, I ordered a plate lunch #3 which is 2 pasteles (you have a choice of hot or mild), gandule rice, as well as a bacalao salad. This wasn't enough to fill my $20, so I also got 2 banana lumpias and a small pastele stew. I was already salivating before she handed me the food, so once I got into the car, I immediately grabbed one of my lumpias out and ate it as I was driving home to enjoy my food. They do have seats here, but I chose to do take out. The lumpia was delicious. The perfect sweetness of banana in fried goodness. I felt my arteries clogging with every bite, but I didn't care. I immediately opened the plate lunch, and savored every bite of pastele and gandule rice. My pastele virginity was broken, and I enjoyed it so much, that I felt so full, I still didn't want to put the plate down. Eventually I had to. The portions were so big, that I ate that plate lunch for lunch and dinner yesterday, and breakfast today. I still have the pastele stew, woot! So to you, The Pastele Shop, thanks for such wonderful first experience, and I'll definitely be coming back for more!

Love this place, the food is always good. Alittle pricey but they give a good size portion of food, so it makes up for it. The spanish rice tastes close to my grandmothers. Overall i love this place, me and my mom always go here to enjoy some good puerto rican food :)

Alright, I live for my pasteles!!! Every time I go back, I bring back a whole lot to the mainland cause everyone needs to try. I'm glad not too many tourists know about this palace. That's okay more for me. So if you visit Hawaii, try this place if you really want good pasteles. There's another place in Wahiawa, called Da Pokeman Fish Market. Just as good. There are a few places that sell pasteles. Just gotta find them.

This place is one of the best! I've been a customer since a little kid. I still order the same meal almost EVERY TIME I stop in for lunch/dinner...the famous Pastele Stew plate. I like to add a chorizo and their bacalao salad. After adding the dining area and expanding the operations, it's really a great place to enjoy your meal with friends, family, or even alone. Another great treat from their menu are the Pastele lumpias. There isn't anyone that I know who has complained about eating those.

Dying for some puerto rican yummy-ness one day I traveled to The Pastele Shop, with delicious thoughts of how my taste-buds were in for a wonderful treat I had arrived!!! I ordered 1 pastele, gandule rice, chorizo, and bacalao salad. The pastele was good! the rice...emmmm, I definately had better, my chorizo was as dry as a piece of beef jerky...bummer because i LOVE that ):. The bacalao salad was good too! So it was a so-so experience however, my craving was taken care of and when that need creeps up again I will definately be paying a visit! I just wont order the things that wasnt so great.

best pasteles on the island. their bacalao salad is very refreshing, and i like that they make pastele lumpias, i can never go there without ordering them. if you are in need of a pastele fix this is the place to go. the matuda is also tasty. Update I think I love this lady she is just the sweetest -she gave us extra lumpia today for the wait but didn't need to cuz I would have waited 40 minutes cuz it's so worth it. I like when establishes reward the patient ppl over the obnoxious. Thank u pastele lady! U rock.

Overall: ok. Small parking area and I lucked-out finding a space. It's an old looking hole-in-the-wall, so don't blink or you'll miss it. I had the pasteles with gandules rice and bacalao salad. The pasteles were good, but not great in my opinion. They were pretty large in size, but seemed too mushy for me. Perhaps it's because they smash their masa instead of grating it. I could be wrong, but just my opinion. The gandules rice lacked flavor. It had some but not enough. It was like eating yellow rice with an occasional gandules bean. The bacalao salad wasn't for me. My "Borrinke" grandma made bacalao and not lettuce with pieces of cod on it. I guess that's what I was expecting but when they brought the food out, I saw lettuce and thought they screwed up. No biggie. The pastele and rice was decent though. The two aunties serving & slaving away in the kitchen were nice and service was good. The restaurant is also open to the outside air, so no AC and expect an occasional fly. I love pasteles though. On a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being the best), these are a 6, in my opinion. Mahalo for the food & aloha, aunties! =)

My friends go here once a month and it normally happens when I'm unable to meet up with them. I love pasteles and could not wait to have a good noshing. Finally this weekend, the stars were aligned and I had my chance! I chose the #5 - one patele (spicy) with gandule rice. They do have mild pasteles so if you're not a fan of any spice, not to worry. I wasn't too sure on the portion size and I was pleasantly surprised at the amount given. They also serve the pastele unwrapped from the banana leaf. No complaints here. Less work for me and more noshing! OMG it was so delish! There was nothing left on my plate. It couldn't have been any cleaner if I had licked it clean. I'd definitely go back and try the other menu items. I hear the stew and banana lumpia calling.

This is one of the few places people can get their pastele, gandule rice, baclao salad and stew fix!!! Although it's out of my way and prices are somewhat high... I feel the taste of the food makes up for the "not-so-good" stuff... Btw... Disappointed that the HOT pastele wasn't even close to mild, but is more cool...LOL! THe quality of food is great... Portions are reasonable... And, my limited options as a whole leads me back as a repeat customer. I aint saying I'm having to settle, since I've tried other places. I realized these people who prepare the yummy peurto rican grindz put culture to the specialty flavor! If I can't get my order homemade from my mama or my close friend then, best believe I'll be a return customer... ANY TIME... NO Doubt!!!

all I can say is..... if you like banana. this is the place... they serve you banana in a ti leaf with a bit of pastele filling, with a great pastele taste. make sure you get the "hot" wun or you will will taste more of the banana and ruin your experience. the other time I was there they gave my order to someone who came after me.. like it didn't bother them... good foood, just over rated the pastele stew was a better deal. more filling and less banana

The pasteles was very good. The portions are adequate for the price you pay. I had the 1 pastele with gandule rice plate and it hit the spot. Their banana lumpia was just "ok". I think Alyssandra's makes better lumpia. I love the bacalao salad. Light and refreshing. The service was great. The lady was very nice and I liked that she made us feel right at home. She said, "if you guys want more soda, just come up and get." I liked that. It was our first time eating there so she explained the menu to us. This place is going on my favorites list. If you haven't eaten here, it is definitely worth a try.

Don't ask me how to say it or whats in it but I love me some PASTELEs and I love me some PASTELE SHOP. I first discovered this gem at the Made of Hawaii festival when I tried a sample of their gandule rice. One bite and I was hooked and then I tried their pastele and I'm in love. Now for those of you not familiar of pastele or gandule rice....umm my response is its made of good stuff. Okay okay I heard pastele is made of smashed green banana, onions, peppers and pork wrapped in banana leaves. I know it doesn't sound appealing but you just have to trust me. Eat that with gandule rice a exotic rice with beans and pork. This Puerto Rican delicacy will have you coming back for more. Now I will be honest, everyone has their own recipe and a bad pastele will make you dislike it. So do me a favor if your are a virgin to pastele try it at THE PASTELE SHOP. I also just discovered for the first time, PASTELE Stew. The only way to describe it is beef stew on steriods. About a block from Kamehameha Shopping Center you will find this gold mind. I'm already convinced everything is good when its wrapped in banana leaves. Maybe I should wrap my wife's cooking in banana leaves. I'm joking! :)

Don't let the lack and awkward parking deter from getting a bite. When you enter it may seem old but their Pastele plate is a winner. The price is good, the Pasteles and Gandule rice will fill you up. It's truly a hole in a wall.

Kudos fell rapidly for my once favorite Pastele Shop. Yesterday, I was jonesing badlly for those salty, spicy rectangles of porky yumminess so I tripped on down for my favorite, "2 pastele, (hot), gandule rice and I'm out the door" goodness. First off I noticed my beloved fav lunch was now almost 10 freaking dolla! What the woof? Cost of shipping, my sagging tail! Every single one of those products is produced here, except the canned olives and cooking oil. The price per plate has gone up by dead reckoning about a dolla a year for the past few years. C'mon that's way too much and way too fast! No doubt others think so too. The place was so empty and quiet, you could hear the fies buzzing. Settle down there, take a breath. (Pant, pant!) While waiting for my plate, I trotted next door to the little shop that sells fresh, red, hot chili peppers in a little bag for a dolla. It cost a dolla and 50 pennies now. What the arf? Cost of shipping? Pshhh. Well, after saddling up with my fresh, fire-y chili peppers and plate I gallop on home for a peaceful lunch. It ended up being a dog day afternoon, if ya know wut I mean! When I opened up my foam box, there sat 2 soggy, wet pasteles, not firmly straddling eachother high on a layer of ti leaves, no... They were sitting there smashed together in a heap like a wet pile of dog sha. Lose one star. The rice was a scant 2 scoops (if that!) and flattened. I'm used to having this plate piled high with gandule rice so high, the foam box cover smashed it flat! Not to be. Loose, barely reaching side to side in that enormously empty foam box. Lose another star Sadly, I spooned the corner edge of pastele into my mouth and lo and behold, not the chewy, spicy almost leathery mouthful that only a pastele edge can posses but soft, brown cud. It didn't melt, it foamed in my mouth. Not exaggerating. Gaaaaa! Bye bye third star! The 2 whole black olives were soft as well, disintegrated into wrinkly strings of black mush in my mouth. That is, I could only find 2 olives in the junk pile. I understand the need to cook and freeze and reheat and sell. Trust me, this was not the case. These pasteles were cooked and frozen and defrosted and reheated and maybe again twice more and sold as a hot plate lunch. The pasteles were rancid. (Or since the two pastele were somewhat smashed together, maybe pastel-i?) The whole plate was a sorry excuse for a lunch. Adios star 4! (Whine!) Since the quality of food at this place went waaay down, the portions got waaaay smaller and the price went waaaaaaay up, I'll have to start sniffing out another pastele joint in town to scarf at. Cuz I'm not planning on going back for a long arse time. So sad too cuz I've had a long history of visiting them! Open to suggestions.
