My boyfriend is out of town on a trip so as much as I try to keep busy, when Friday night rolls along I suddenly realize I have to choose dinner by myself. Oy ve, I'm indecisive with him but alone, it's even worse! I finally wandered down to Waialae and was going to kill time thinking when I looked up and saw Sushiya & decided to just go do it. I got a spicy ahi donburi to go; the gentleman was so friendly when he took my order & I was pleasantly surprised when I got home to realize he had also given me some miso soup. Score! My spicy tuna was yummy & came with cucumbers & ginger on the side. For $8 the portion was excellent and I was happy with the quality of the fish. I also later realized that while the sign said open still, I was pretty close to closing so I truly appreciate the quality of food and service I received. Small space, not a lot of seats but food is super good for takeout. Cash only!

Very reasonably priced, considering that this is high-quality Japanese food. Sushi and every other popular Japanese dish is available at a very good price. Food was produced very quickly and brought to our table by a spritely ojisan. A tiny storefront, not conducive to groups or a large number of customers. Reasonably ample parking, shared with the other shops on the main street. Would definitely try again!

parking: small private lot in front the cost: $10 per dish the drinks: black tea slushee with boba the food: spicy tuna donburi, dynamite maki reservations: no This is a nice small take-out sushi restaurant in Kaimuki. It's run by a couple of really nice old korean people. The dynamite maki is slightly spicy, slighty sweet, and pretty good. The spicy tuna donburi is made of the same spicy tuna as that from the dynamite maki. Takes about 10 minutes for them to complete your order for take out and there's a small table in the restaurant if you want to sit and eat. They also have slushees with boba. The black tea one was too sweet for me. Overall, an okay place to get take-out sushi. Pretty good black tea slushee with boba ask them make it less sweet!

I got the spicy ahi hand roll and it tastes really good. The man works there is really nice. I have some dislike about this place; the store has a weird smell, and they are cash only.

AWESOME!!! Our family LOVES to come to Sushiya on Waialae Ave! This place is run by the cutest couple. They are the only two in there every single day and they are always in a good mood! The sushi is made so well and it is absolutely delicious. You cannot beat this price for the quality of sushi you receive. True, this place is not a large restaurant with lots of tables to sit on and many workers running around helping out. This is a place you eat when you are in no rush and want to eat awesome sushi in you rubber slippers and board shorts. (Or you can just make a phone order and pick it up!) You may dine in or take out. Warning! Their spicy ahi is SPICYYYY! But we love it, the flavor is perfect :)

Very quick. Good service. It was loud when I was ordering, so we didn't chat. Afterward, the shop was quiet. A good variety. I had two handrolled sushi. Decent prices. Parking is atrocious, so keep that in mind.

Ordered the Spicy Ahi Sushi and Dragon roll! It was delicious! I would come back here, but not with a large party. Small sitting area. Probably about 3 tables and some chairs again some wall tables. The old man in the front was very nice! My friends and I were giggling at the fact the old man was intrigue with the way I shred some of the rice off the roll! He was smiling and staring how I put aside the rice! It was hilarious! The rolls are huge btw!

Sorry, I can't recommend this place and I wouldn't go back. The staff was nice, but the way they make their sushi is so fast-foodish and not how I like it. Too much rice. Waay too much rice. Generous portion of spicy ahi, but it was probably a poor grade of ahi and not very fresh.

They have some stalls in the front of their shop next to boston pizza on Waialae Ave & 10th Ave. A mom & pop sushi shop. + I love how they offer sushi rice as an option. Believe me, I'm shocked that not a lot of other places do. It makes a big difference! + Spicy Ahi donburi is delicious. Spicy and extra saucy...just the way I like it! - This one time they ran out of miso soup... but didn't do anything to compensate =/ - The cucumber they provide with the spicy ahi donburi doesn't fit it. It's purpose is to probably it to neutralize the mouth when the spicy ahi gets too spicy lol

I was shocked to see there was only 1 other Yelper that rated this place a 1 star. Seeing the 4 1/2 stars average rating made me double check the photos that this was the place we went to. Sad to say that I still give 1 star to this place. Seeing how a lot of other Yelpers gave it such high reviews, makes me think...did we go on a really OFF day for them? Did they decide to get their fish from an Ala Wai Canal Vendor that day? In any case, I would still not give Sushiya a second try. Hubby is a sushiaholic, and could probably eat sushi every dang day if I'd let him. We decided to give Sushiya a try because he too heard from a friend that they had great sushi. This definitely is a take out type of place. If I remember correctly, there's only 1 small table off to the side. Since we were so hungry, and prefer to eat sushi right away and not let it sit for take out...we ate it immediately in our car in their tiny parking lot. I know what you're thinking....wow classy right?....well don't judge! We ordered several of their sushi and a few special rolls. All of the raw fish we ordered tasted old, the rice seemed a bit hard/uncooked, and they added too much sauce to the rolls. I felt like it should've come with a bib, because it was basically a dripping mess.

I have been to many sushi bars in Honolulu. I love this place because of many reasons. 1) Their spicy ahi is AMAZING! Instead of chopped up ahi with mixed with a sauce of some sort like other restaurants do, they have big, red, beautiful chunks of ahi in theirs. 2) Their sushi pieces are huge! 3) Red Dragon roll is amazing! 4) Their handmade mandoo is delicious! 5) For the excellent quality of sushi, this place is inexpensive! 6) The couple who own it are so sweet and friendly. I found my new go-to sushi place! I have to add that they only take cash, the restaurant is small, so take-out may be a better option!

I always get the crunchy tempura don and it is the best! I had yet to find a place with a don like this that was better than Manoa Sushis crunch don but I found it here with the crunchy tempura don! It is so good and fresh! We also really enjoy the mandoo We come here at least once a week. The parking in this lot can be a challenge but we always find a spot and this is definitely more of a take out place. The couple that owns this restaurant is so sweet and nice too which is an added bonus

Spicy ahi is just perfect..! The old couples are super nice! And they give u free miso soup that tastes soooooo good! I always come here cos I work nearby :p Overall great food with reasonable price (: They only accept cash.

Best sushi on the island! Their prices were great and it's small enough of a place that my husband and I could order and get our food within minutes. The owner even threw in a free bowl of miso soup! Will go again when we come back to Hawaii!

I've eaten many times at Sansei, which is great. But Sushiya is just as good at half the price! Just 3 small tables in a place that's primarily designed for takeout, but an awesome selection of high quality sushi at a fantastic price.

Very delicious sushi, and the price is cheap comparing to bigger places that charge much more.. Recommended : spicy ahi/salmon Danbury. take out only,no place to sit inside.

I had their spicy ahi salad, and 3 piece salmon sushi. The spicy ahi was WAY TOO SPICY (to a point where I kept having to stop eating), and the salmon was the most obnoxious, previously frozen piece of fish I had ever seen/tasted. It came with rectangular shaped rice. I was surprised that they weren't embarrassed to serve it. It was the worst $13 I had ever spent on food. I won't be going back.

I absolutely ADORE Sushiya's spicy ahi salad. O-M-GEE. $9.41 with tax, and the portions are very generous. The spicy ahi is consistently fresh and SPICY. The owner who is works the front everyday is so sweet. He always spots me a penny if I don't have change. :) I've tried spicy ahi salads at other places, but Sushiya's is by-far the best tasting and best value.

THE best place to grab some sushi for lunch. I can't recommend their Spicy Ahi and Shrimp Tempura enough. Although the prices have risen a little over the years, it's still worth it t to support a small local business. The owners are incredibly sweet, and will often give you free miso soup if you dine in. I always order their Spicy Ahi Nigiri... it's the perfect blend of spice and flavor! If I'm extra hungry, I'll opt for their Spicy Ahi Donburi. The Dynamite Maki also uses the same spicy topping and is also really tasty. A little less expensive are their handrolls, for around $2 each you get a decent size handroll! Two handrolls definitely fill me up. I always leave satisfied when I eat at Sushiya because of their tasty, relatively inexpensive sushi and the warm mom-and-pop atmosphere.

I come here for lunch sometimes - not often, but when I just feel like I have tried every place in Kaimuki and want to get a quick bite and not have to wait long. What I like about this place is that it is family run. There are always kids from the nearby schools picking up sushi and chatting with their friends . It reminds me a lot of when I was growing up on Maui. My friends and I would always stop at this sushi place (back then there were no chain sushi places - just a mom and pop stand that was usually 4 walls and a door with enough space for 2 people to stand inside:)) Nice to have those familiar memories. The sushi is OK. Nothing fancy, but not too much vinegar in the rice and not too much sugar -so for me that is a win. If you aren't familiar with Kainuki - this little spot is to the right of Tamura's Wine Shop that is off 10th avenue, located in a "micro - mini" mall with Boston Pizza and a new anyway loan place. I like the soft shell crab roll, dragon roll and they even have a good spicy ahi bowl! I usually take my little snack and head tot he park across the street to sit outside, get some sun and think about the weekend! The space is small but can fit about 6 people - if you are looking for a place to grab some sushi and go - it is a good one - if you are dining in - there are a few chairs and tables outside by the pizza place or the sidewalk is always an alternative!

I think Shushiya is the only take out sushi place in Kaimuki. I had been here once before, and the owner-man gave me incorrect change. I hadn't been back until yesterday because I was craving sushi so badly. They have A LOT of options to choose from. You have your basic nigiri sets and handrolls, but they also have curry, salads and bentos. I had the dynamite roll ($9). It was huge....I almost wasn't able to finish it and it came with a small container of miso soup too! I was skeptical about their boba, but I'll have to go back and try for myself sometime.

What the heck?? This place has terrible fish! The tuna was watery and terrible texture. Same for the octopus. Same again for the clam. And the squid. Salmon roe looked funny to begin with (not round). I was right - salty and probably came from a can. How did this place get 4.5 stars?? Yelp, you are really letting me down in Hawaii. Waste of time and money. And a dinner out with the girlfriend. :( Probably the worst fish I've ever tasted, without exaggeration. The rolls are so soaked with toppings though, that you can't taste the fish. Thus I can give this place one star.

I love yelp because they led us to this place, without yelp we would have never heard about it and been left downtown at some over-priced over-hyped sushi joint. Instead we ate a tasty filling lunch at a small independently owned storefront Sushi operation, cash only, everything made to order and super cheap and tasty. It Reminded me of the small storefront sushi places in Japan, run it, get the goods, pay a tiny amount and leave with a full stomach (or to-go bag) and wallet and a nice small on your face. 5 stars for the quality/quantity vs value.

  • Lisa N.

I absolutely adore this place. It's like a fast-food sushi joint and the sushi is really delicious. Their portions are bigger than Sushiman located down on Waialae as well and there is a cute/friendly little Korean man that works at the register and his wife works in the back making the sushi. (For the longest time I thought he was Japanese.) The only available parking is in front of the place which is also shared with Boston's Pizza (very limited) and a pain to get in & out. But I wouldn't really downgrade their review due to the limited parking. It's all about the quality of the food (to me that is.) It's a small Mom & Pop place which I also love to support (:

Family run, hole in the wall joint. My friend told me a few years back "brah we gotta go sushiya", and I've gone ever since. Portion size is reasonable for the price, but sushi, and fish in general, is getting more expensive as we speak so cannot complain. Quality is where it gets 5 stars. Fish is fresh, sauce is nice and spicy, tobiko for some saltiness, then cucumber and ginger to top it off. One star off because I always wish there was just a little more to fill me up. Overall a really good spot. They close on the earlier side so don't miss out.

Om nom nom nom...that's the sound of munching down the sushi at this quaint and quick sushi shop! Fantastic prices, and huge selection of sushi, nigiri, hand rolls, etc. and the owner is sooooo nice! My personal recommendation: The dynamite roll (crab, shrimp tempura, spicy ahi, cheese, sweet/sour sauce....yum!) and you can't go wrong with the simple spicy tuna hand roll! They also have a small bubble tea selection, but I didn't have the time, nor the large appetite to try that along with all the sushi :-( Next time I'll give it a shot. If you don't want the mass-produced Sushi-land junk, come here and expect a great, local sushi experience :-)

Sushiya is in the heart of Kaimuki town, within walking distance of the Kaimuki rec center and the 7-Eleven. You can find alot of handrolls and value oriented items, or if you fancy, the more exotic items that will make your eating experience much more fascinating. The store is next to the Boston's Pizza and on the bus lines, if you get around that way. There is very limited parking, with a few stalls to share with Boston's and street parking wherever you can find it. There is limited seating in Sushiya, so more often than not, it's used as a takeout place for all things Japanese and sushi. This place is a relatively new joint, so I see this place on my commute in the morning and afternoon. The bubble drinks are pretty good and I have to admit some of the red dragon rolls are delicious too. Only thing that sucks is that they don't accept credit cards.

The BEST sushi on the island BAR NONE. Seriously. You haven't had real sushi till you've been here. The prices are so affordable too! The owner who is always working the front is SO kind. When I dine in he almost always offers me free miso soup. :) The spicy ahi is to die for. SOOOO ONO! I wish they would relocate to Salt Lake so I could eat there everyday!

This is a small place for sushi. There is a very large menu with many pictures if a customer doesn't understand Japanese. I would recommend the "basic" Udon dish and the crab roll. It's not very expensive and the place only takes cash. However, it's a quick stop and the food is moderately priced. I would recommend coming here if one wants to see how Japanese food is made at a different place that is a hole in the wall but not purely based on local Hawaiian food. Parking is rather challenging given that it sits on one of the feeder roads to Palolo and one has to back out on Waialae Ave, which is always busy.

My Friend Katie was craving Sushi today, so I yelped a lunch sushi place and Sushiya was the top rated one nearby. I just said Sushi a lot. Sushi. Anyways, it did not disappoint. I wanted a little bit heavier fare, so I got the chicken donburi and a spicy ahi hand roll to try out the sushi side. Both were amazing! Katie got the Spicy Salmon Donburi which was also very good. The prices are awesome and the portions are just right. I'll definitely be heading back to Sushiya again soon!

:) I get the california hand roll and I love them. I used to eat these all the time for lunch when I worked in the area. $2 gets you a pretty large hand roll that's great for a light lunch or snack. The owners are super nice too.

5 stars for their green tea-flavored bubble tea alone. I haven't had that good of a green tea-flavored drink since I was in Kyoto. Strong, slightly bitter maccha taste with mochi-like boba. The owners are so cute!

What can I say, I absolutely love this place and would give it ten stars if I could! I'm definitely a regular and go there so much that the owners have long gotten my "usual" down. Speaking of the owners, the older Korean couple are so friendly and welcoming. My usual order is the spicy ahi salad or spicy ahi donburi if I need a little more substance. The salad is so perfect though with just the right combo of textures. The crisp lettuce and cool smooth ahi go perfect together. Prices are pretty reasonable as well. I highly recommend this little tucked away spot to anyone. You won't be dissapointed.

Simple sushi but made well. Quality is always good and consistent. They do not pre-make any sushi. Your order will be made when you place it. So if you are in a rush, I highly suggest you call in your order. They will be more than glad to make it for you. Spicy ahi bowl and Chirashi are staples for me. My daughters like the dragon roll and natto roll. The reason this is a 4* and not 5*... Nothing fancy and no high end stuff. The couple who own and run this business are so nice and sweet. My family are regulars here. My 2 daughters love it. They will choose this place over any of the other places such as Genki or Kurukuru. Sometimes he will even slip in a bonus bowl of miso soup. Parking is very limited. Hit & miss. I think the lot only has like 8 stalls and it's shared with Boston Pizza. Street parking is usually available too.

This is like my favorite sushi place on the island, I mean I love eating at other places, but this place has such good spicy ahi! I come here mainly because it's near my mom's office so it's easy to walk to, but I can't give a full five stars or even four stars because of various reasons. The location is convenient, but parking is not. You either have to park in this small parking lot in front (only like a handful of spaces) or on the street. Because the store is right off of Waialae Ave, it's difficult to get in and out of stalls because you're practically reversing into a busy street. Another negative about Sushiya is it's CASH ONLY! I totally didn't realize it after all the years of coming here! I guess usually I have my mom get sushi for me so I'm never really there when paying or perhaps over the years they changed to a cash only basis, but even so, know that it's CASH ONLY! I also realized that their spicy ahi donburi has gotten a LOT smaller, like WAYYY smaller. I remember when I first started going here the bowl would be filled with fish and rice, now it's like half filled and just small compared to what I remember. But the spicy ahi here is delicious, the sauce has just the right ratio of spice to mayonnaise, so you don't feel "gross" from the mayo but your mouth isn't on fire either. I always tell everyone this is my favorite place to go for spicy ahi, also the cute, little old man that usually works the cash register is always so nice.

I pass this place everyday and finally made it in. The owner is a total sweetheart ....... he made my daughter a plain avacado roll and packed it seperately for her with complimentary miso soup - I got takeout for my son & his friends ... dynamite tray, shrimp tempura handrolls, and california rolls - they LOVED it !! it is cute inside with two little tables & also one outside - they have a large menu with reasonable prices ... I will definately be back !!

My girlfriend and I were starving (and new to the area) and stumbled upon this magical place. For $25 we ate like kings and had leftover rolls for lunch the next day. Not the best for sitting down (small tables inside) but great for take out sushi! Highly recommend. Sushi quality is great for the price! Oh, and this Sushiya is not to be confused with the Sushiya back in Isla Vista (Santa Barbara). Totally different.

**EDIT** Came back the next day, 8/12/11. I ordered a California hand roll, dynamite maki again, their homemade mandoo/gyoza, & strawberry bubble drink. The hand roll was HUGE and really stuffed! They really don't skimp on the portion sizes! The mandoo and strawberry bubble drink were both both good as well. The Dynamite maki is just as good as yesterdays! :D I don't remember the last time I was this excited to write a review. My girlfriend suggested to come here today for a light snack before dinner. I don't usually listen to her suggestions but I'm glad I did today. She's been craving green tea bubble drink recently and when she searched it, Sushiya popped up. Sushiya is located right next door to the Boston's Pizza on Waialae Ave. across from Kaimuki Community Park. I should listen to my gf alllll the time. Very similar to a Kozo Sushi or Aloha Sushi but a lot cheaper in my opinion. The owner, a very nice Asian man took my order while his wife? in the back was making the food. I guess that's why they call it the Dynamite sushi, the mix of flavors exploded in my mouth. yelp.com/biz_photos/VZeH… For $8.49 it comes with Shrimp tempura, spicy ahi, crab, cucumber, sweet & sour sauce. The spicy ahi was super strong and covered the sweet & sour flavor. I made sure I identified the tail of the shrimp before I started eating. OMG! This is the spiciest spicy ahi I've EVER had!! (LMK where you've had spicier). I can usually handle spicy flavors but today I was sweating up a storm! The sushi here is fresh! Good quality sushi, big and stuffed! I also ordered one order of the spicy ahi nigiri for a little over $3, so good! yelp.com/biz_photos/VZeH… Green tea bubble drink, I'm not a big fan, I can't say I've tried many but I can tell you that its bomb here! I really don't care for green tea, or the tapioca balls, my girlfriend ordered the drink. Like most couples, you let your other half have a taste. After one sip it was mines! I drank like 90% of the bubble drink, I also think a lot of it has to do with the food being super spicy so I had to cool myself. In the beginning the tapioca balls tasted a little warm and towards the end of the drink it was more frozen which you have to be careful when you SUCK.. ;P The balls might be coming quick down your throat. LOL! The green tea drink tasted really really good, I don't know how its usually made but mines was like a slake (between a shake and a slush). I keep telling myself it was made with green tea ice cream but I don't know, I didn't get any ice in my drink. Either they didn't use ice or it was blended really well. yelp.com/biz_photos/VZeH… I wanted to order another bubble drink towards the end of our meal but my gf said no. So guess what................ "Babe, are you gonna leave some for me?" - The girlfriend. HAHAHA!! That's what you get for not letting me order another drink! :P Although there is limited seating, I suggest dining in. If you're born blessed like I am, the owner will give you a miso soup. ;) I will definitely be coming back more often for their good spicy ahi and cheap prices! I'm now addicted to green tea bubble drink! (LMK where they have good ones). ***CASH ONLY*** Yelp 365 Challenge # 11/365.

I am a fan of some Red Dragon Rolls! Woo! Sushiya offers a nice quick stop to get some hand rolls for a good price. I usually only get Red Dragon Rolls, Spicy Ahi Rolls, and Crab Rolls. They are all exceptional. I have also tried their Tempura Udon and its good. Spicy Ahi Bowl is also good. Their regular Dragon Roll is ok just ok. They are usually very quick. Its best to call in and then come by and pick up your order. You can eat there but seating is limited and Sushiya is very small. The owners are really nice. They even gave me free miso soup when I came in on a weekend and ordered a lot of hand rolls for my friends and I. Prices are cheap. Food is pretty good. Owners are nice. 4 stars. Kinda like Sushiman down the street but I would rate Sushiya higher than Sushiman in my book. They are cash only so bring your dolla dolla bills y'all.

I really like the small sushiya across my office. There is limited parking in front, but I just walk over anyway. The owner is very cordial, and in dining in the small place, he may offer you complimentary miso soup. I like their handrolls, the california maki, and their spicy ahi bowl. To me that is the best deal, the sushi rice covers the entire bottom of the bowl and the spicy ahi is generous on top. I happen to LIKE spicy, and to me the bowls, along with the teriyaki beef or teriyaki chicken bowls make me "OH SO HAPPY"!!! Yelp 365 Challenge: 85/365

Cute little shop, with a cute older man. He's so sweet. If you eat there he will bring out some miso soup for you. I love coming here, especially because it's down the road of my school. They're fast so I always am able to finish my food and be back at school within my 30 min lunch break :D

Sushiya is the best. The owners are wonderful, hard working, and everything is always perfectly fresh, and I have never had a bad roll there. The specialty rolls and Philly are standouts, and their platters are priced well and a hit at any party. My favorite sushi take out, hands down.

The sushi is fresh! The Japanese owner is so nice. For only have him and another worker I didn't wAit very long. The UME maki was amazing. The spicy tuna was fresh, but not very spicy. I just wished it had a little more kick, the reason I rated it 4 instead of 5.

Good food for a decent price. We ordered take out since there aren't many seats available. The dynamite maki sushi is very good :) We also ordered the red dragon and that was good too, but to both Mike and myself, we like the dynamite one more. My son ate the tempura udon and the spam roll. The tempura udon is good. My son finished off the spam roll, so I am not able to say how it was, but it must've been good to him! I also ordered a strawberry bubble drink. It was good, but I have tasted better.

Sushiya is our absolute favorite grab and go sushi on Oahu. We typicall order handrolls and bubble tea but have also tried the chirashi bowl and several lunch sushi sets. Everything is fresh, the handrolls are huge, and the owners are super friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend the dynamite handroll, the chirashi, and the mango and green tea bubble teas! Just a couple quick notes: there's limited seating inside and outside but it's rarely so busy that you can't grab a spot. Oh, and cash only.

Their hand rolls are so cheap and delicious! My partner had the inari and spicy vegetable hand roll. They were both 5-star delicious, but the inari was a little on the more expensive side. I had the unagi hand roll, spam hand roll, and California hand roll. The unagi hand roll was okay. It had the skin on and tasted too fishy. The spam hand roll was a great deal. It's like a spam musubi, but with a lot more nori. The California hand roll was one of the best California rolls I've ever had. Unagi Hand Roll ($1.89) - 3 stars Inari ($3.89) - 4 stars Spam Hand Roll ($1.29) - 4 stars California Hand Roll ($1.89) - 4.5 stars Spicy Vegetable Hand Roll ($1.89) - 5 stars I was more than satisfied with my 3 hand rolls for only about $5. I am definitely coming back to this place. Cash only.

Great place. I love small mom-and-pop places that do simple things well, and Sushiya delivers. We ordered the party platter to split. My wife didn't feel like tako (octopus), so they substituted some unagi. All of the ingredients were fresh and well-prepared. Sometimes party-platters look sloppy, but this one looked picture perfect. To top it off, our meal was prepared fresh in maybe 7 minutes. We couldn't be happier.

I love Sushiya. It looks quite odd next to Boston's and it's so tiny compared to there that one forgets it even exists. Their spicy ahi roll is amazing and I even come there for when I get a craving for a spam mususbi. Their rice is nice and warm, making my belly oh so happy. I tried their spicy ahi bowl but the spicyness overpowers the entire dish. I recommend their sushi although I heard their chicken donburi is quite good... that's the next thing I'll probably try.

Love this place! The sushi is fresh and the place is clean. There aren't a lot of tables so you might need to take it out. Love the udon. I also really like the owner he's a sweet old Japanese man. He is really nice. Go here you won't regret it.

Great place, a little mom a pop place. I like different varieties of Maki...their selection is limited, but they still offer good choices. The ratio of fish per roll to price per roll is high- a good thing. The place is good if you like maki, great for hand rolls and good for nigiri. I'll def. go back.

I used to live down the street from Sushiya and my roommates and I used to say they must put crack in their spicy ahi donburis because they are so addicting! Delicious! I now live on the other side of the island but drive into kaimuki just to stop at Sushiya. The owner and his wife are so sweet. They know my order before I even have to say anything and they are always happy to see me. Great fast service!

My favorite casual sushi restaurant on Oahu. It is owned and run by an older couple who are very welcoming and always wearing a smile. The prices are affordable and the quality is exceptional. It is more of a take out place since they only have two tables in their small space, but I recommend EVERYONE to go there at least once. I go there soo much, they already know exactly what I'm going to order.

Ive been neglecting this little sushi joint for far too long. I decided to have lunch here the other day and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Wakame Udon and 2 orders of the spicy ahi (6 pieces) this is pretty much my staple when going to casual sushi places. My friend ordered the Tempura Udon which came with 3 large shrimp tempura's! She said it was very delicious and we both agreed the noodles were nice and chewy. My Wakame Udon was very good and very similar to Sushiman, not much difference. The spicy ahi nigiri was very chunky and over flowing the nigiri, bonus star. The taste overall was very good and the service was excellent! My friend accidentally knocked over the little shoyu saucer and the Korean owner refused to let us clean it up ourselves when I asked for more napkins, he and his wife are so sweet and pleasant it would be hard not to come here even if the food was so-so, but it far exceeds so-so and enters the realm of delish! and is on my list of places I will frequent often! the sushi is tasty and the service is superb! Oh and my friend highly recommends the green tea bubble drink!

Throughout high school I practically grew up on take-out sushi and I can't believe I have never tried Sushiya! But thanks to my friend Anthony N. I decided to check it out. This little sushi shop is located on the right hand side while driving down Waialae Avenue right next to Boston's Pizza and before Tamura's Fine Wine & Liquors. Inside there's about three small round tables and two counters with stools. So just be warned that this place is VERY SMALL. As I stepped inside I immediately thought this was going to be like a Kozo or Ninja Sushi but in my opinion it was WAY better! I got the Red Dragon Maki yelp.com/biz_photos/VZeH… ($8.49) and a Mango Bubble Drink yelp.com/biz_photos/VZeH… ($3.29). As a former sushi maker I love trying different sushi and I have to admit Sushiya has some pretty good spicy ahi! Their spicy ahi is cut into pretty big chunks and is mixed with tobiko and a spicy ahi sauce, then topped with green onions. I think this spicy ahi takes the cake! As for the bubble drink. What's not to like? The mango was very flavorful and the boba bubbles were quite interesting. At first the boba/bubble balls were warm and soft then they got chewy (half way through my meal) and by the end it got semi chewy and frozen! Although this is CASH ONLY, I still like it. Also, while I was waiting, I saw that their hand rolls are WAY cheaper than Kozo and Ninja's and the size of those hand rolls are HUMONGOUS! Sushiya will probably be my new take-out sushi place! I can't wait to come back to try more sushi! Yelp 365 Challenge: Review 14/365

*Dialing 735-9494* "Hi Sushiya, how may I help you?" she kindly answers. "Hi, can I make a take out order...two veggie roll, not too much rice, please." "Okay, two veggie rolls, thank you." That is the script from my standard take out order from Sushiya in Kaimuki. Yes, I am a creature of comfort and can eat this 5 days/week. And each time I've called, the Sushiya lady kindly answers that way, every time with no hint of stress in her voice, even at peak lunch hour. Their food is reasonably priced or should I say typical of other sushi "fast food" places around town and they are fast and consistently good. I'm guessing the couple working there are the owners and are very polite (know what you're thinking, what polite Koreans? Yes, there are, unlike the stereotype, I can say b/c I have the creds/DNA to say). Anyway, stop by for a quick take out order or eat in (only two small tables) there are a variety of handrolls, nigiri, bowls, bentos and platters to choose from, even fried mundoo (matitiso, oishi, ono). Make Sushiya your next pot luck take out or if you're looking for a quick bite. Best to call in your order...735-9494. "Hi Sushiya, how may I help you..." : ) Enjoy!

I'll def. go back.

Best sushi on the island! Their prices were great and it's small enough of a place that my husband and I could order and get our food within minutes. The owner even threw in a free bowl of miso soup! Will go again when we come back to Hawaii!

Cash only!
