I feel horrible giving one star, but in reality I would give negative stars if I could. I wanted to really like the place because it seems family owned and a hole in the wall. I was recommended by a co-worker to go here so i finally tried it out tonight. I phone ordered salt and pepper shrimp with a side of rice. She told me it would be ready right away. The lady on the phone was friendly and nice. I got there and I received my food for take out. Service again was friendly and welcoming (which is why I feel bad for giving one star.) I go back to work and open up my plate and it's salt and pepper FISH! She even told me three times "Oh you're here for your salt and pepper shrimp." "Your salt and pepper shrimp is ready!" UGH Then upon examining my FISH, it is sprinkled with copious amounts of MSG on top the batter! So much MSG it shined. If it were diamonds on that fish I'd be fuggin' rich! I tried to eat two pieces of fish and I just couldn't. The strong chemical flavor of MSG just really threw off my appetite...especially since it wasn't even cooked into the fish and just sprinkled on the batter AFTER cooking. I literally ate two pieces - the first piece with batter and the second trying to peel off the batter. I threw the whole plate away. $12 down the drain. I'm sad and would never go to this place again.

Mmm Crispy Chicken Deliciousness!! FIrst of all, let me start by saying, do not go here while you are hungry. There are hundreds of mouthwatering photos all over this restaurant that make you just want to keep ordering! At one point, I looked at my boyfriend, deadly serious mind you, and said: "why don't the two of us just get a FAMILY pack for $39.95 then we can stuff our faces til our hearts content :)....no?" Sadly, he did not agree to this plan. But I still ended up stuffed and happy so I have no complaints. Not only is the food delicious here, but it's also cheap! For $32, we got 1 plate of minute chicken over cake noodle, 1 plate minute chicken fried rice, 1 plate sweet sour pork, crispy chicken, and fried rice, and side order of gau gee. I think whats extra awesome about this place, is when doing minute chicken take-out, they don't just pour the sauce all over the cake noodles and chicken and send you on your way, no, they put the sauce in another container so that when you go home, you get to enjoy super super crispy noodles (and sauce as you please...definitely a plus!). :) Some places make cake noodles like well..cake. They make it kind of condensed and mushy with bits of crispiness on the outside. But not here! Here it's soooo crispy. Very reminiscent of when we used to eat raw ramen as kids (no? no one remember this? sigh.) My highlight of the night however was the Crispy Chicken and the Gau Gee. Mmmm....the crispy chicken is very reminiscent of peking duck. I swear it's prepared the same way because when you bite into that super crispy outer skin, you just taste the sweet duck fat goodness. It was so tasty and crispy on the outside and soft, non-dry chicken meat on the inside. The Gau Gee looked kind of burnt at first when we got it. But as soon as I put it in my mouth...it was heaven. Very flavorful, not overly oily, suppper crispy. I'm definitely a fan. The fried rice sadly was just so-so to me. Seemed to be missing some salt and I couldn't find ONE charsiu in this charsiu fried rice! :( But...it was pretty busy when we went last night. So I forgive them. lol This place is definitely a must try if you're into big portion, cheap prices, and tasty yumminess. Parking can be challenging, but if you wait a bit, someone usually leaves. :)

Good value with a wide selection of dishes. They give free tea but you need to ask for it. I asked for it at the end of my meal and it was super hot and they over filled the teapot so it was difficult pouring. I made a mess of tea on the table. I never was offered free ice cream at the end of my dining in meal....disappointed after reading reviews. Anyway, they dont advertise that it's free after your meal. Tasty garlic minute chicken. The cake noodles are the best I've had in a restaurant. All so crisp in every bite. The bitter melon and chicken was average in taste and portion. Accommodated me with no MSG, even when I told them late in my ordering. Nice friendly atmosphere of workers and waitress. I'd go back there again to try something else because you get a good authentic Chinese meal that's worth the price.

I only put one star because it wouldn't accept no star. 4 words : DO NOT EAT HERE ! YOU HAVE BEEN FAIRLY WARNED. Ordered the roast duck : dry and old ! Won ton funn in soup : won ton old and dry ! Gau gee is not gau gee, it's man doo ! & it's old and dry also !! Sweet sour fish : where's the fish ? Never eating here again. This place used to be good before. Now it's no where near as good ! Blehhhh !! Go to Au' s Garden in the same parking lot instead.

We came here because it opened late and we wanted to try a new place .The fried rice we order was the worst fried rice I've ever had in a Chinese restaurant. The texture of the rice was tough, we ordered the shrimp and char Sui fried rice and the shrimp was the size of a nickel . Over all the fried rice is terrible. The gau gee wasn't good but wasn't bad, it's edible but not tastey. Also the spring roll was really weird , taste salty and they use a weird ingredient I've never had in a spring roll before . Besides the food, the little Chinese girl server is nice and sweet. Sorry won't come back

Stumbled on Sunny Chinese Restaurant on Yelp. I found it looking for Chinese restaurants with high star ratings. I first then read the reviews and pretty much a lot of them were positives. I said why not. I traveled all the way from Waipahu to pick it up & had to get something from town too. Stopped by and knew exactly what strip mall they were in. Its where diners is. When you first step in, you will be overwhelm by the pictures of food on the walls. Just a warning, dont come here on a empty stomach. I did my home work first before coming in. The things you have to get was The cake noodle minute chicken. I then added Egg plant tofu & sweet sour pork. I asked them to not add MSG and they did it with no problem. I get home, cause i took take out for me and my mom said she LOVES the place. First off, it was very tasty to both of us even though there was no MSG added. thats a very big plus for us, and secondly, it wasn't oily at all like other Chinese restaurants. My mom kept on asking where was this place and kept on raving how good it was and it wasn't oily. That you know is a legit place. The waiter was also very very friendly and kept me updated on how long more my order will take. I'll come by again and try other things for sure but the stuff i tried tasted fantastic.

Really vast selection of lunch plates and pictures of what it looks like on their walls. Daunting to look at but it really simplifies you from guessing what the heck it is. Good cheap standard Chinese food. Dine in or takeout, your choice. It's quite a fair amount of food for the price, you won't be hungry after you leave. Sorry that's about it, short & sweet. Again my tastes are my own, yours may vary. Cheers!

Ordered a tray of the Minute Chicken with cake noodle. Service was ok & they had my order ready for pick up as I stated. The food is good for a hole in the wall kind of place. Price was kind of high for a medium tray of noodles $$$$

Born from necessity...and fueled by hunger, my favorite foodie friend's mom said that we should maybe grab a bite to eat. SURE!!! "I'm a little bit hungry". Ok, we can grab something. What do you feel like eating? "i like to eat Chinese food". OK! Out comes my SmartPhone with my Yelp app in tow...Search for Chinese, open now, less than 6 miles. couple of seconds later and Sunny Chinese comes up on the radar! 3 miles away...not too far. $ so I know it's affordable. Gary N. gave it 4 stars...ok. Let's try it! Holy Food Photo Overload, Batman!! They have a take out menu...but who needs that when you can just look at the walls??? The walls are covered floor to ceiling with photos of all of the items that they serve. There was the "noodle" section, the "soup" section. Items for $7.95 section...Catering??? they have that too! We ordered a few staples: Seafood Pan Fried Noodle, String Beans with Chicken, and Roast Duck Noodle with a side of Salted Egg, Sesame Balls and a couple of drinks. Fast food is an understatement!! The food came out quick and it was surprisingly tasty. After the last 3 Chinese food debacles I had recently experienced in Mililani, I was somewhat apprehensive about what I was going to encounter here. ^5's for the pleasant surprise! The service was great...the customers that were dining there were super helpful too. We chuckled at how overwhelming the menu was but I think that it kind of lended to the conversation with our new foodie friends. We walked out of there with left overs and a bill totalling $32!! WTF???? and it came with free ice cream novelty treats??? WOW!!! Loved it so much, we came back the next night and tried out a few more items: Salt & Pepper Shrimp-- YUM! Crispy Pork Intestines-- Pretty damn good according to the Foodie Mom Veggie Tofu Fried Noodles-- Tasty! plus a few more noodle dishes to bring home and we still only spent $50 for the whole thing! Amazing! If Im in Kalihi and it's kinda late...and happen to have a craving for some take out Chinese Fast Food...Guess where I'm going???

If you came to this place looking for fine dining chinese food then you came to the wrong place. C'mon, you're in Kalihi. Home of the whole in the wall hidden gems. But if you're liking for good chinese food at a good price then this is it. As you enter, the walls are covered in laminated pictures of food. Every wall is cluttered with pictures. But you later realize that it's an organized clutter. The waitress appears to be a young family member of the owners. She is very polite and you don't have to wait long to order. Deep fried spicy pork and cold ginger chicken with fried rice. My gf had the Crispy chicken and cold ginger chicken on fried rice. The spicy pork was okay. It was seasoned well but slightly over cooked. The crispy chicken was good. The cold ginger chicken was different. It wasn't white white like you normally see. It appeared to have been pre made. The ginger sauce was thicker with large pieces of green onion. There wasn't as much oil in the sauce, which to me was a good thing. Although it looked different, it tasted good. Oh, we also ordered a plate of crispy gau gee. They also appears to be pre made and our cooked. They could have been deep fried about a minute longer. The portions are adequate and we even had to take home leftovers. Then to top it off, the waitress brought us a ice cream drumstick and a chocolate covered vanilla ice cream bar for free. All of this for just under $23.00 It's not the best chinese food around, but it is a good food at a good value. And the service was good. In the old days this is what we grew up on. If you're a Mandalay kind of person then don't eat here. You won't be happy.

What fun it is to look at these mouthwatering photos: almost as good as plastic food in Japan Food is hot and fresh and reasonably priced! A real gem.

Went here for lunch and ordered the minute chicken with char siu fried rice and I enjoyed it. Plate comes with two deep fried mondoo. The fried rice was to my liking with little pieces of char siu and egg - better than a lot of other places' fried rice where to me are plain compared to this one. The minute chicken was flavorful also. It's like plate lunch Chinese - Not too many places where you have the main dish with char siu fried rice and a lot of times at other places if the dish does come with fried rice it will be plain fried rice. This place in terms of my taste is delicious!!! Will be definitely be returning here again...

For some good Chinese food, I like to phone in my orders at this restaurant. It's a bit small to sit in for my taste, and it isn't air conditioned so it can get a bit sticky. The walls are decorated with pictures of all their dishes listed in different categories, so it makes for easy ordering. Plus the visual helps you know what it is your getting as well how they do it. If you get your food to go, they have this nice habit of opening the tray to show you your food and confirm its your order! Not too many places I know that do that. The food's great, the service is so pleasant and courteous, and its just a nice little restaurant I frequent. And you should too.

Yelp Challenge 365 # 101/365 Today as I puruse through my Yelp page,I notice a review from Val Y on Sunny Chinese Restaurant. There is never enough chinese diners....so I thought I'd give this place a try. Shanghai noodles, won ton min in soup, minute chicken cake noodle was what we ordered. Shanghai noodles was a little too dry for my taste but okay for my lunch partner Won ton min in soup: won ton was HUGE (largest I've seen, ever!). The broth was a little too bland (chicken base) but I guess okay considering there was no msg in it Minute chicken cake noodle: was okay.... Service was excellent. Oh, one other thing. They give you ice cream for desert! What a treat that was. Pictures cover all the walls. Pictures of all of their dishes. It was like a "wall menu" with prices too! Parking is a no no! You'd have to be lucky when you go..... I got there at the stroke of noon so everyone and their brother is having lunch..... I might give their catering idea a try one of these days when the opportunity presents itself.

This place has been on my radar from the time it was a ROTD by Chad K. Yelp friend Michelle L. said that this place has the best cake noodle in Honolulu. I love cake noodle. Sunny Chinese Restaurant was a must try for me! I drive into the parking lot and park my car. Me: "Ah there it is!" yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… I walk up to the storefront and see all these photos of Chinese dishes on the storefront window. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… I'm thinking: "Good ideal! The pictures are very helpful! Old Chinese proverb: One picture is worth ten thousand words." yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… I walk inside ..OMG! Am I surprised!! There are pictures everywhere! I was greeted by a friendly lady that welcomes me with a smile! Owner/Hostess/Dee Dee: "Thank you for coming! May I help you?" yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… Me: "Can you give me a minute? This is my first time here! Uhh!! ...make that ten minutes! I'm in shock!! There are so many photos and dishes to choose from!!" Dee Dee: "Yes! Look around! All of the dishes we serve are posted in pictures on the walls. Take your time! Let me know if you have any questions!!" I'm thinking: "WOW!!! Where do I begin? The quality of the photos is quite good!! Everything looks yummy! I think it WILL take 10 minutes to walk around and browse through all the pictures on the wall. This place has wall to wall photos!!!" I look at the wall on the right .. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… Then the wall on the back left.. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… Then the front left .. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… Then above the door . yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… Then in the back of the fan.. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… On the wall in front of the kitchen. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… On the side wall in front of the kitchen .. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… On the low wall in front of the kitchen .. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… On the wall in front of the cash register and fountain.. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… ...so many PICTURES!! Me: "Do you have cake noodle?" Dee Dee: "Yes! We make a crispy cake noodle! Look at the wall on the left!!" I zero in on the Minute Chicken Cake Noodle. yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… Me: "I'll have the Minute Chicken Cake Noodle and a side order of Hot and Sour Soup. I am very sensitive to MSG. Can you make sure that the chef does not put any MSG in my order!!" Dee Dee: "OK! Have a seat. Please look at our take out menu." yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… I browse the take out menu and notice there are 145 individual menu items divided into the categories of Appetizer; Soup; Seafood; Chicken and Duck; Pork and Beef; Eggs; Vegetables; Rice and Noodles. 145 individual items and MORE THAN "145" PICTURES!! AMAZING!! yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… There are also $8.95 Specials and Catering items. "Free delivery orders over $200". Dee Dee: "Order is ready!" yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… Me: "That was fast!" Dee Dee: "Enjoy your meal! I hope you come again!" Me: I'm thinking the owner Dee Dee are so very lovely, friendly, cordial, helpful, courteous, thoughtful, considerate and attentive. From a service point of view, this place ROCKS!! I go to my mom's house and open my Minute Chicken w/ Cake Noodle ... yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… and Hot and Sour Soup . yelp.com/biz_photos/2Fi_… Michelle L. was right! The cake noodle is fantastic. Nice and crispy on the outside and with the minute chicken, a perfect combination! Me: "What do you think mom???" Mom: "The cake noodle is like from the old days. I like it!" 5 stars because my mom liked it too!! P.S. Whew! This is the longest review I have written on Yelp with 19 pictures.... that is over 191,000 words. I'm tired! P.P.S. You just read over 191,000 words in less than 5 minutes! WOW! You read fast!

I really enjoy this place. I always order the Bar B Que mixed plate with a diet coke. I think this place is the best. You can also use a credit card and they also cater. The Bar B Que mixed plate has me coming back for more and more. This is pretty much all I order over here and I love it. Check them out and I'm sure you wont be disappointed. Two thumbs up in my book.....

So I ordered the shrimp fried rice & garlic seafood fried rice. I have to admit I was kinda scared to order the fried rice with like shrimp canton, or mochigo chicken etc. because I thought they would put little fried rice. But I was wrong! Taking a look of how my bf & I's orders the fried rice was more then we expected which was good because usually places we would go to wouldnt put much rice like that & + it was freshly hot! can't wait to go back & try dfrnt options :)

Pictures of dishes all over the place. Ooooo look they get duck feet, shucks, I already ordered. Mmm stuffed bitter melon, Peking duck with bun, quite a few Chinatown choices. Kinna question the scrambled eggs with salted eggs and rice. Had ox tail soup. Cause everybody was rushing me. Would have liked to try the other stuff. Free ice cream for dessert? Ah, I didn't see that. Missed it. Thought the prices were a little high. But when the servings came out. Okay, it was worth it.

As with all Chinese restaurants, they have a lot of options to pick from. I have never been to a place where they have a picture of all the plates from the entire menu. Located in Kalihi next to the Post Office. There is other restaurants in the shopping center so you have options if you dont "see" what you want to eat. I have tried this place a number of times. I would have to say that my favorite is the minute chicken cake noodle with choy sum. Since it is made to order, expect the sauce to be hot and the pan noodles to be extra crispy. The others in my party eat here atleast once a week. They swear the Salt and Pepper Shrimp is the best. I have yet to try this but it will be on my list for next week. The place I didn't feel like its the cleanest but I'm accustomed to other Chinese establishments in other areas. Compared to other places in the area tho, it is cleaner. There isn't air conditioning so if you are going to dine in, dress down. They have fans and vents but this put me in a mood to not try any of there soups.

Open on Xmas Day? That's great! Enjoyable Chinese food, shown in a wide assortment of literally hundreds of photos on the walls of the small restaurant. While the food was good, the wait help was really attentive and friendly. Our waitress just started working there that day! And they are open to 11 p.m. at night!

This place is pretty decent. It's not amazing Chinese food but it hits the spot, its open late and its not expensive. I would give it a 3.5 star rating for these factors. We had the garlic chicken fried rice and mandoo plate (3/5 stars) - the chicken was seasoned in what tasted like flour, garlic and 5-spice, not the sweet and sticky garlic chicken you find at Korean places, but decent nonetheless. Fried rice was ok- not too greasy, but not brimming with goodies which is what makes fried rice da bomb in my humble opinion. The mandoo were a bit soft and could have been fried longer. Also got the ong choi and beef plate (2/5 stars). Tons of ong choi, cooked just right. A few other veggies like canned mushrooms, carrot and water chestnut slices. The beef didn't taste good. cheap cuts of meat and had pieces of gristle and pretty flavorless. The gravy was not overly flavorful. It was a bit greasy. I wouldn't order again. You get free ice cream when you dine in, not when you take out.

First time to this place last night with one of my friends, and I got to say, it's probably the most least desirable Chinese Restaurant I've been to on Oahu I'll try to keep this short and sweet (or salty in this case). Things that we ordered: 1) Minute Chicken Cake Noodle 2) Char Sue Fried Rice 3) Crispy Gau Gee 4) Saimin 5) Mochiko Kitchen - Cake Noodle: Pan Fried. Crispy. Salty. (Probably had MSG) - Fried Rice: Looked good. No flavor. - Gau Gee: Under coked bater? Or as it seemed - Saimin: First time I never drank the soup - Mochiko Chicken: Let the Japanese restaurants do this

It's okay. Food was tasty enough--didn't really match the picture, like a commercial sandwich to the real thing. My largest prob is when you compare this restaurant to others that are close by like golden chinese food (way better than this place). :/ it's a meh experience. I'll go back to golden instead when I want chinese, all around better (price, atmosphere, seating, service).

Nope. Never again. Ever, never ever. Stomach ache on a plate. Wall papered with pictures of luscious meals. Lies, all lies. Prices velly cheap. No wonder... The food took so long to come out. Remove one star. I mean over 15 minutes for a noodle plate and a side of chicken wings? No one was in the place. I ordered first. Obviously I ordered first. 5 minutes later, another customer walked in. After he ordered I heard the wok turn on. I could hear the cook fire up the wok each time he made a dish. Only one burner? Hmmmm. I ordered first. Fellow diner got his meal before I did. WTFut? The seafood on top of my noodles tasted exactly the same. The shrimp tasted like the squid tasted like the fish tasted like the scallop. Minus another star. The noodles were bathed in a thin, brown, tan soup/sauce. Muddy, clearly not salted enough. No flavor. None. If it were not for the noodles wheat~y, starchy texture, I wouldn't have been able to distinguish a shrimp from a bite of noodles. They were old and over done. Maybe if he hadn't made me wait over 15 minutes for them.... Goodbye third star. The chicken, called Wing dings didn't look like the picture on the wall. They were crispy and salty good but teeny tiny, itsy bitsy, puny muny. Flap one star away with this Wing Ding. Seven dolla for 7 segments. Not 7 wings. 7 segments of wings. Fut. This is the first time in my life (and I've had bad noodles before) that I couldn't eat more than a couple of bites. Food completely tasteless. Tried dousing it with mustard sauce. It disappeared in to the muddy soup. Next bite, tasteless. What a neat trick. Where'd the mustard shoyu go? Sunny made it disappear! Dunno. Dontcare.

I love it here. The food is delicious and the service is wonderful. I don't know what some people on yelp here are talking about the food being so bland that they'd have to drown it in hot mustard. Pfffft please! We eat here so often and not once did we have unflavored food! People be cray! Anywaaaaaayz! We ordered the minute chicken cake noodles and it was amaze! The chicken was garlic-y and full of flavor and savored every bite. We also had the chicken with black bean sauce. Way better than most Chinese restaurants. We also said the salt and pepper squid! Delish! Again, lots of flavor because of the garlic and jalapeños! We just order a lot of stuff here. We try to mix it up every time but our go to is always the minute chicken. The service is great! I'm assuming the restaurant is owned by a family. We always have that nice young girl working that takes our orders. She offers to refill our waters and always gives us ice cream after our meal. Complimentary too! The walls are covered in pictures of their food. It makes it so hard to choose what to eat that day. My husband and I always eat here after a long day of work but I would come here anytime and we live in ewa beach! Best Chinese food hands down!!

I've never been to a place where the entire menu is on the walls. Instead of just a name and maybe a short description, there are full-colored, large pictures everywhere! Deciding what you want to eat is interesting. There are so many choices that it takes a while to decide. I think that there are more than 100 choices. Last night, we ordered salt and pepper pork chops with chicken curry fried rice, cold ginger chicken with fried rice, a garlic shrimp plate, and a 6 piece order of crispy won ton. The pork chops were delicious and there was a lot of garlic that came on top of it. It was a little unhealthy because it was deep fried, but I don't mind eating something unhealthy every once in a while if it's good. The chicken curry fried rice was surprisingly savory. I've never had anything quite like it. It tasted like chicken curry, but there was no sauce. The only thing that I did not like about the dish was that the pork chops had many small bones. The crispy won ton were freshly made and came with sweet and sour sauce. The cold ginger chicken was standard like any other chinese cold ginger chicken. The regular fried rice that came with it was delicious as well. The garlic shrimp was yummy except that it didn't come shelled, so you had to shell it yourself. At the end we were given free ice cream in little cups. Service was really good and I never had to ask for anything except for the check.

A Hidden Gem to me! Thanks to an electronic called GPS, it wasn't that difficult to find! (otherwise, I would be circling the block) Best part? OPEN till 11pm! Hell to the YES! SO hard to find a place that is open anything past 8p/9p! Welcomed by a sweet smiling lady, and told us to sit, and try the a la carte and what the specials were. Parking was a little difficult as well because it's shared with other places. Walked in, Pictures of the food everywhere! Well damn! Tease me why don't you? Tease the poor little hungry girl who can never decide what she wants to eat! My goodness, I wish it was this easy to order in every restaurant, who doesn't like looking at mouth watering meals on a wall?! The hardest part on making your order, was deciding which one you want! Ordered the special of Egg flower soup $6.50 for a HUGE bowl that could feed maybe 6 people, we had to take that ish HOME forreals! Husband ordered, sweet and sour pork - outcome? let's just say there was LESS talking, and all you hear was 'omg, ..OoH!' someone was having a mouthgasm! I ordered the pork chop with garlic sauce, it was too chewy for me, but nonetheless delicious! When you're ready to pay....What?! No fortune cookie? no...candy?! NO SON, you GET a damn vanilla fudge ice cream or Neapolitan Ice cream sandwich! THAT'S WSUP! Such great service, even when the lady was busy, she still made time to serve the soup and food to you, and not just hand over the food! :) Gotta love mom & pop shops!

Very generous portions & prices are good too. Lots of variety and there are pics of every dish which is nice if you've never been before. Solid service too. Not a lot of room and food took a little longer than I expected, but the pros outweigh the cons.

I first read all of the reviews (the only bad was I found was about a woman that got the wrong order on a takeout). After, so many positive comments, I put Sunny's to the ultimate test...MY WIFE...and now we are both fans of Sunny Chinese Restaurant!!! I love the pictures of all the available dishes all over the walls. Definitely going back...to try other pictures.

I often dine at Sunny's with my grandparents. Like may of the other reviewers have stated already the service here is excellent and you are treated like a valued customer! Because we are regular customers we sometimes even get free desserts! I find that the food is consistent in the amount given as well as in the quality. Food here is very tasty! The picture menus on the walls are very very helpful and the combinations plates that I have ordered from there have lasted me for 2 meals! Sunny's may not look like a lot from the outside, but like another reviewer has stated, it is a treasure!

Sunny's has everything I have been looking for in a Chinese Restaurant. The food is super flavorful, not heavy or greasy and I noticed that everything tasted really fresh which is odd because I dont associate "fresh" with Chinese food. My takeout order for the UH game pot luck consisted of the roast chicken, roast duck, cake noodle with minute chicken and the garlic seafood fried rice. Roast chicken and duck- Ive bought roast chicken and roast duck from a few places in Chinatown and have ordered it at many other Chinese restaurants and can easily say that its the best here. Both were very juicy yet not greasy, the skin was very crispy and the taste was easily 5 star. It was perfect. The cake noodle with minute chicken was a first for me, Ive had cake noodle before but not how its prepared here. They noodles are a bit crunchy yet have the perfect amount of chewiness when you pour the sauce over it. The noodles are about 3/4 quarters of an inch thick and cut to about the size of a soda cracker, which I think helps keep its perfect texture. Ive never had minute chicken, it looked over cooked and dry but somehow its moist and a tad crispy also...I dont know how the hell..but it was great. The garlic seafood fried rice was light and again not greasy at all. Im not a fan of grease laden fried rice which is how 99% of fried rice is made IMO and why I never order it but here its different. The fried rice is unique in that it was light and fluffy but still had so much flavor, it had a hint of garlic, little shrimps and scallops which made this tops on my fried rice list. Service here was excellent, while I waited for my food (which was all but 15 minutes go figure) the lady/owner? offered me ice water, when my food was ready she showed me my food and offered me a Costco-like box or bags. I would choose Sunny's over any fancy Chinese restaurant that has gold lined China sets, a huge lone fish in a fish tank, pick your own live crabs or lobsters, impossible to use smooth chopsticks and a spinning circular table thing on the table. I am a creature of habit and venturing outside of my tiny circle of food places I frequent on the weekends is a huge step for me, with Sunny Chinese Restaurant my circle just got a little bigger.

I was quite surprised at this place, enough for me to call it a treasure. It all started when we were debating on a place for dinner..........Keawe Grill or Kikuya. As we were standing outside our car in front of Sunny Chinese Restaurant the lady that works there came outside and offered us a menu. She was really nice and eager, I ended up calling her positive persistence. We ended up in the restaurant looking at the thousands of pictures that are up on the wall. Ok not a thousand but it was alot and kinda overwhelming but looked oh so good. I asked her about it and found out that she took the pictures with just a rinky dink dig cam and costco blows them up. After about 3 mins of looking we decided on staying and giving them a try. From the time we ordered to the time the food came on the table was minutes. It felt like 3 minutes before the kung pao chicken came out and the rest followed. we even asked about msg and they said they can cook without adding any msg. Don't be like me and judge this place, I did and in the past I quickly brushed it off because it didn't look like much and did't think much of this place. The food was good, the service was great and I will definitely return.

This is a great hole in the wall find in Kalihi. It's next to Kikuya, New Diner's Drive-In, and Kiawe Grill. The menu is on the walls (check out the pics). It can be over whelming and a pain in the neck! Everything we saw other people ordering looked great! The good: - Choy sum with garlic sauce. Cooked to perfection, not too mushy, not too woody, just right, tossed in a mild and light minced garlic sauce. - Garlic seafood fried rice. The winner of the night. Fried rice with shrimp, fish, squid (?) and lots of garlic! Was perfect. Alright: - Stuffed eggplant w/ black bean sauce. Was alright. Some of the eggplant wasn't cooked as well as I would like. The black bean sauce was REALLY good (see pic). Made a great sauce to compliment all the other dishes. - Pork chop suey. I generally don't like chop suey, but my wife loves it. We ordered the beef, but the cook made pork by mistake. No biggie. the server/owner apologized and offered to make us the beef variety and let us keep the pork at no charge, but we declined. The pork chop suey looked great. It was pretty good, but I really don't like chop suey in general. There was no bean sprouts, if that matters to you. I must comment about the service. One thing I find lacking in plenty of local chop suey houses and chinese places is a lack of service. Lots of times it seems as though the workers are trying to ignore you or are just too busy to properly serve a packed house (and a not-so-packed house, too). But this place had great service. Water was constantly refilled. Server was always around and concerned about our meal. When the kitchen made a mistake, we were informed of the mistake and treated like customers, not an inconvenience. I don't know if they do this every night, but the server was giving free ice cream cups (like the kind you used to get in school) after the meal. This place will make a great addition to the rotation of restaurants my wife and I frequent. Bonus: a Chinese hole in the wall that takes credit cards! Also had some mean Chinese acrobatic show on tv...

I go here about once a month. I would go more. However I try to hit it when the Chinese food craving starts. This place never lets me down. Today I went for the Mongolian Beef and of course it has to be the spicey version. I really cant put in words how much I love the dishes over here. Spiced perfectly never too greasy, and in no way bland at all. The Service is quick, The meals are hot and cooked correctly. What I find a nice personal touch. She usually gives me a little cup of free ice cream after I'm done. My mom would be very disapointed with me. Usually I down the desert before the dinner. :) As far as Chinese food places go. This one rates high in my favorites catagory. If your new to the area, please give this one a go. It is well worth it. Great for your family groups. Pleanty of seating. Just dont get confused over what to eat. Pictures of food wallpaper the walls from corner to corner. 5 stars all the way Sunny Chinese Restaurant. Great Job :)

Co workers suggested this place to me, when we wanted to eat Chinese one day for lunch. After we arrived here, I checked in on Yelp and I was good to go. Upon arrival, the store front windows had photos of the dishes that were to be served. I was like whoa. That's different. I know that some restaurants do that, but when I went inside, it was another story. The walls were plastered with photos of what Sunny's had to offer. It was like being in a museum or art gallery almost. So much photos. I guess that gives this restaurant its uniqueness. The parking can be a hit or miss when you go there during lunch time or dinner time, so its suggested that street parking or wherever you can find it. I just can't get over the numerous photos up on the wall. lol. The prices were somewhat reasonable, averaging $10, so it was a good place to come here. The restaurant itself is small, but can handle medium sized groups at any time. The owner, whom I saw photos on Yelp, greeted us warmly and told us to sit down and relax. She told us about the specials of the day, but we just ordered from the menu. Just the basics for me though. I wasn't going to go fancy and order off the menu, but it was quite nice to be here. Beef Broccoli on noodles was quite nice and delicious. The best part was the free ice cream at the end of the meal. I thought that was pretty extra ordinary. I guess that's their quirk. Good service and just a fanastic overall experience here. I will come back! B

Being new to the island Im already done w meat rice mac salad combo, its not fulfilling. I was looking for more creativity and found this place. They have a lot of variety, you can be creative by mix n matching. I ordered seafood in black bean sauce w cake noodles and it was bomb. This is my go to Chinese takeout place.

I really was hoping that I could confirm the high praises that Sunny received, but I can't. My one-star is solely based off of the food as customer service was wonderful, as well as prompt. But let's be real, the food is what counts. I will caveat this review with the fact that I am basing it off of a single experience and only a single menu choice. With that being said I STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST ORDERING THE ORANGE CHICKEN! In my opinion, I honestly thought the food was so bad that I would go as far as saying it was the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten ... and that's saying a lot. I was a bit turned off when I was initially showed the chicken sitting in a off-PINK syrup, and to much my disappointment, it tasted worse than it looked. The chicken was almost unrecognizable as meat (one piece I did find what was distinctly a piece of bone, but this is in a piece of meat that is supposed to be boneless), the breading had turned to mush (I only live 3 minutes away), and honestly the smell of the two fried dumplings that came with the meal were reminiscent of ... well, let's just say something that isn't edible. To further describe the meat, I couldn't really distinguish between the meat and the batter ... it was just soppy gelatinous mess. Part of me wants to give this restaurant another chance, mainly because of the consistent high reviews, but I honestly don't think I'll be visiting them again.

been a regular at sunny for about 3 years or more. arsenio,my business partner took me there for lunch one day. now it is my favorite chinese fast food restaurant. dee dee and her family owns and runs this extraordinary place. no need for menus ,all the choices are pictured on the walls. as you see it. that's how the dish comes to you. every choice is cooked fresh off the grill or wok. the food is tasty and the serving is big. and what chinese restaurant do you know of ,that gives you ice cream for dessert? the place is very clean and neat. oh yeah, there is a big screen tv up on the wall. i've given dee dee some movies to share with her customers. so, good food and service always works for me. sunny is next to diner's on king st.

This is the first place that comes to mind when I want Chinese! I love the free tea that she serves. it tastes... comforting, at home :] all the meals are on average $10. the food is totally worth the price! at the end of the meal, she gives free ice cream! the location is easy to find and parking can sometimes be an issue but it hardly is. and it's close to school so it's worth the walk instead of eating at the cafeteria, which has same priced food, less quantity. I love this restaurant!!

My sister invited me out to dinner tonight only to get 2 strikes. She downloaded her Yelp application via Google (when she already has a Yelp account but failed to log in) that had incorrect information. Her first choice of Ray's Cafe closes at 3pm on Sundays and the doors were closed. The new Marukame Udon on Fort Street Mall has this place open on Sundays on Google's Yelp but this place had lights out. By this time I was getting a little irritated as I was hungry. Grrrr........... I recall reading some reviews in the past and recently saw this place when I ate at the New Diner's Drive Inn the other week. I suggested my family to come here so we gave it a try. As I recall, this place is bombarded with pictures of their menu items all over the wall. You have pictures all over the place coordinated with alphabets and numbers. It took some time to absorb the menu items as this was all a first for our party of 6 tonight. It seems that Dee Dee is no longer the owner here because there was a different girl serving us. She had a thick mainland China accent but spoke enough English to get by. Among the 6 of us we ordered 5 plates and 1 side order: Pepper-Salt Pork Chops w/ Curry Chicken Fried Rice (4/5) One of my sisters and I both ordered this plate. It came out quite quickly and we both were disappointed as the pork chops were 2x deep-fried. They were dark in color and dry. Before my sister could say anything, I flagged down our waitress and told her I wasn't going to eat this. It was clearly overcooked and they needed to redo the plate. In about 10 minutes later the 2 plates came back and the pork chops were very good. Hot, juicy and flavorful. And very tender. I sure wasn't going to settle for "pork jerky". The fried rice was interesting. It had a subtle curry flavor and it was missing something. My sister suggested I add some hot sauce, which I did. The hot sauce elevated the fried rice. This plate also came with 2 deep-fried mandoo. They were crispy and not oily. This plate was good and worth ordering again. Garlic Chicken w/ Char Siu Fried Rice (4/5) My niece ordered this dish and I tried it. The chicken was cooked to order so it came out very fresh. This place uses skinless and boneless chicken thighs so it was tender. This plate also came with 2 deep-friend mandoo. In my opinion, a solid dish. Orange Chicken w/ Char Siu Fried Rice (4/5) Nephew's meal. Chicken had a beer batter like outside coating with a so-called orange sauce. It tasted more like a generic sweet-and-sour red sauce. Chicken was also made fresh as you could still enjoy the crunch of the outside coating. Plate also had 2 deep-fried mandoo. Minuite Chicken w/ Cake Noodle (4/5) Rather than the typical pan-fried minute chicken, this place deep-fried the chicken. It was good but it lacked the juiciness that I am used to. Noodles were cooked very well and still had the crispy texture with gravy poured over it. It came with a FEW pieces of CHOY SUM vegetables. Wished they put more veggies in this dish. Very good dish. ONG CHOY Vegetables w/ Beef (4/5) Very good but unique at the same time. I never had water chestnuts, carrots and baby corn with ONG CHOY before. I mean, this place is more like Chinese food to satisfy the local clientele. Surely wasn't authentic but very palatable in my opinion. Nothing fancy but just a nice garlic sauce for this dish. As stated in the other reviews, at the end of the meal this place gives you complimentary ice cream for dessert. We were given 2 each of drumsticks, ice cream sandwiches and chocolate coated ice cream. Because the girl was handling all tables as well as taking take-out orders via in person and phone, she was scrambling back-and-forth. I wanted to help myself to the ice water pitcher but it was empty! Before I could say anything, she came to our table to clear the dishes and at that time she asked if we wanted more water. The next thing I know she got more ice from the back, filled up the pitcher and poured more water for our table. This place shares a parking lot with other establishments but there's still quite a bit of stalls. If you enjoy local style Chinese food and a great bargain, this place is for you. NOTES: 1) Credit cards accepted here. 2) There is a huge chalkboard on the wall and it lists the "Today's Specials".

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
