Back home, I often walk my dog near a stable area where road-signs reading "frightened horses make bad decisions" are posted. Much like frightened horses, starving people also make bad decisions. To get to the food court of the International Marketplace I first zombie-shuffled through all the island tchotchkes for sale in the International Marketplace. By the time I reached the food court I pretty much just stumbled up to the first window I saw and ordered up whatever sounded good. The "California Maki" was rich and satisfying. A "Spicy Ahi Bowl" less so. The Ahi Bowl, despite what it showed in the picture posted near where I ordered, had only rice, ahi, and a few small cucumber slices and not enough flavor to keep me interested beyond the 50% mark. A "Spicy Ahi Bowl with Ikura" was also missing pictured ingredients. Neither ahi bowl was bad, just not compelling, even though I was starving. That says a lot, no? Worse was the soy sauce hoarding. For a maki and 2 ahi bowls I was given a couple soy sauce packets. After returning twice to request more soy sauce, we finally just asked for a handful, which seemed to distress the proprietor until we swore we'd return the unused packets. The relief he expressed when we actually returned the unused packets was, well... seems like I ought not have to sweat about my use of condiments while eating the food I just purchased from you. When the food hitting my stomach began to register in my brain I finally got a look around at the place and had one of those palm-to-forehead slapping moments where one says "why are we here?" as one compares the lonely tables in front of Rainbow to what appeared to be happy, full tables at the Blue Water, across the way. Coulda, woulda, shoulda, didn't: Starving people make bad decisions. The outdoor food court appeared to have some decent dining choices at reasonable prices. Rainbow isn't a bad choice if you just want a couple of maki but if you like your soy sauce you might want to reconsider. Free nightly shows right there in the food court, while you eat.

Tried 2 hand-rolls from here. Didn't like the seaweed or the rice. The fish was decent. It was the only sushi available in the food court -- probably not a good idea to get sushi from a food court ... just sayin.

**This location officially closed on 12/28/2013*** I found this gem tucked away near tiki town at the International Market Place. Went there three nights in row until they officially closed. The cucumber or kapa roll was one of the best I've ever had. The prices were great, the husband and wife owners may have been older and hard of hearing, but she made some amazing hand rolled sushi. Too bad the International Market Place will also close for good on 12/31/2013 to make way for a Saks 5th Avenue and shopping center. Nothing like destroying a 50 year old landmark to make way for over priced shops to conform to the new surroundings on Kalakaua Ave. Sad to see "Old Hawaii" die so tragically.

I am a fan. Came twice in one week. Had the 6 piece nigiri for $5.99. You can't beat that. Really good packet wasabi.

Rainbow Sushi is among a few local restaurants here in the International Marketplace food court. Like other offerings there in the food court, Rainbow Sushi offers good quality, no frills and good prices. I'm a big fan of Ikura (salmon roe) and use that as my litmus test for how fresh the sushi is. Very reasonably priced than most places, it was served up very fresh and tasty. For the non-raw sushi lovers, the California Rolls and Cucumber Rolls will not disappoint.

I came here for a quick snack and decided to pick up some cucumber sushi while we were walking around the International Market. This place was in the middle of a mini-food court with lots of options, but it was so hot, I wanted something light. There is general seating but no seating designated for this particular stand. The cucumber sushi was fresh and exactly what I was looking for...and the prices were amazing! It was around $4 for 12 pieces. My only complaint...and to no fault of the guy working there...but it took about 15 minutes to get my food here. The wait was pretty long because there was only one person working who was taking orders AND making all the sushi. A family of 6 ordered right before I did...and you could have fed and army off of what they ordered. But this is the reason why it took so long. If you have the patience, it's a good place to come while you're on the go although I probably wouldn't actively seek this place out for a meal.

Boooo! I even pity myself for eating here. Yes it is cheap and signage looks appealing but if you're having raw fish, don't settle. I didn't believe it when other yelpers said the fish was tasteless but it really was! Even the squid was hard to bite. That is a bad sign my friends. Quick tip: you deserve better, get yourself a dozen of oysters and lobster tail right across from here, called Blue Water Shrimp Company

Horrible food and horrible customer service. Will never come back here again! I asked for a lil bit of soy sauce and hot sauce for my tasteless beef don bowl and she said 50 cent! Really???? Ridiculous!!! Who F****n charges for condiments???? Wish there was an option for zero stars cuz that's all they deserve!

The sushi was ok. Thats all I can give it. The food court it a tourist trap. It's a food court ! Poor tourist. Get out of Waikiki ! And Read the Yelp reviews !

Not bad at all. At first I thought they're going to take the sushi out of the freezer and serve it to us. But the girl actually made the sushi fresh and they were surprisingly good.

I've been to Rainbow Sushi a couple times during the last visit to Hawaii, and I think their portions and prices are pretty decent. They are located inside the International Marketplace food court. The only sushi I've had is their cucumber roll (Kappa Maki), so I can't really give any other opinions on their other items yet.

  • Tracy E.

You get what you pay for here. You can't expect grade A sushi. I ordered a few salmon sushi to satisfy a sudden craving, and the fish was definitely tough. it also seemed like they packed on the rice to try to hide the amount of sushi that they were actually giving you. I'll save my money for a real sushi restaurant next time.

Stopped by Rainbow Sushi in the food court of the International Marketplace in Waikiki looking for a quick bite to eat. Instead of ordering the usual sushi I opted for something different, the beef don bowl. It was after eating the beef don bowl I realized I should have ordered their sushi. The beef was not seasoned well as this dish tasted very bland and quite disappointing when the sliced onions in this dish had the most flavor. When it comes to a sushi place I learned I should stick with ordering their specialty items.

Stumbled across Rainbow Sushi while looking for a snack. I picked up some cucumber sushi. I typically find cucumber sushi to be fine, safe, and such -- an easy-to-eat, healthy snack. This cucumber sushi was fantastic. The cucumber was very fresh and the rice well balanced. The rice was just fantastic. I will probably be back at least once or twice more for different dishes during my five days in Honolulu.

Decent "food court" style sushi. Decent prices. The guy taking orders was less than courteous. This place is located on the left side of the food court- I recommend checking out the eateries on the right side- a lot more people and better food quality.

I got my only sushi fix while vacationing here. I was pleasantly surprise that that everything is made to order and not coming out as premade from the fridge. I stayed away from the sashimi just in case since it was a food court, but all in all I was happy with what I ate.

I was wanting a snack while shopping at the international market.. I decided to get sushi at rainbow sushi.. I had ahi and eel hand roll.. it was very fresh, tasty and at a great price.. I would visit them again..

  • Stacia S.

It was okay and got me full, but the real star was the price. Super cheap!! We got the 18 piece (two of them actually!) for 5.95 and the three piece tuna for 2.95. Cheap eats is a plus, but would have been better if the tuna wasnt so fatty.

Hit the spot for a quick sushi roll. No frills in a open air market/food court type of place with pigeons flying in the food court area. I'd go back if I were in town. CASH ONLY.

We had this the first day we were in Honolulu. For the price it was a 3 star but purely from a taste and preparation standpoint it's a 2 star. We had sushi, unagi donburi rice. The unagi was a bit under cooked and the sushi was like supermarket sushi. If you are looking for a quick and cheap lunch this will satisfy but if you are willing to spend a bit more go somewhere else.

I couldn't find Rainbow sushi on here (surprised). Pretty decent place to get some sushi while being a little tourist and cruising the international market. I got a cute little wood carving of this little hula girl on a sea turtle and was so proud of my haggling skills I wandered down to the food court and bought me some sushi. Rainbow rolls good, and the classic California rolls never fail. From what I remember the price is pretty decent for being in such a hot tourist spot, and the sushi is always good :)

I had the most flavorless sushi here. How does that happen? Although the fish was incredibly supple and fresh, it was bland and flavorless... Like someone removed all the taste. It was so odd. I would give them another try based ob freshness.
