I was so excited that I was going to try Pho Thinh today. After looking at the pictures posted on Yelp and the reviews stating it's even better than the famous To Chau I couldn't wait. We arrived at 10:15am and found that parking was the biggest problem with this place. All stalls reserved except for like 5 stalls, and all street parking taken. So, my bf suggested we go here instead. Never heard of this place, never would've stopped by and tried this place, but overall this is an ok place. When we walked in there was only one other person inside, but that was understandable since it was fairly early for the lunch crowd. After looking over their short and simple menu I decided on the medium combination pho (meatballs, steak, and tendon), bf got the same thing but in a large, and we shared the spring rolls (minced shrimp, crab meat, pork hash, and vegetables). There were 4 pieces of the spring rolls cut in half (it actually looked like the ones you buy pre-made in the store) with vermecelli noodles, basil, iceberg lettuce, and a special fish sauce. I thought it was weird that they used iceberg lettuce instead of romaine (though I'm guessing it's because it's the cheapest lettuce in the produce aisle in supermarkets) and the pieces were so small you couldn't wrap it, so I gave up and ate it with my chopsticks. It was average tasting, and it may have been because it wasn't made fresh by them. I thought it was cute that the owner actually waited till we finished our appetizer before bringing out our soup. Most places serve the appetizer and then before you dig into your first bite they're bringing you your entree or like I wrote about Pho 777, they bring your dishes in whatever order they feel like. The pho was good. The broth was clear and I couldn't get a distinct flavor so I decided that it wasn't chicken or beef broth, but maybe a seafood or fish stock of some sort. There was a lot of sliced steak, but only one beefball split in half and no tendon. I'm guessing they thought they could make up for the lack of tendon and the meager amount of beefballs for more meat. That's fine, it's better than nothing. Like I said, I never heard of this place, never would've stopped to eat here... and sadly, I don't think I will again. I can see how this restaurant could be the go-to place for people that lived in the area and for college students, but next time, I'm for sure trying Pho Thinh.

The pho here tastes like it's so healthy and fresh... almost like eating purified pho. NOT WHAT I WANTED. I guess it's not a bad thing but being that I'm vietnamese and my blood is made of pho broth, this type of taste isn't what i expected. Plus, how are you supposed to eat pho when you're sweating so much from the heat. Turn on the AC my friend, homegirls buttcrack is starting to sweat and you're chilling there watching TV and serving water with no ice. :( what a bummer, it's right down the street form me.

Excellent Service and Food After tiring experience and wasted our time @ Sabai Dee Thai Restaurant, (Please read my review for more details.) We came to Pho South King. The inside of this restaurant is clean, and that's important for me. The waiter was very polite and attentive! PHO with thin sliced beef was authentic and good, it didn't have heavy MSG taste like other restaurant's PHO that have tons of MSG. The lemon glass chicken was tasty. And all the veggie came with our food was very fresh and clean, no slimy black edge on bean sprouts like other restaurant. When we left, the waiter's wife (I guess) came out of the kitchen and bowed so deeply, and the waiter greeted us with the politest way as we left, as if we were at Roy's or Morimoto restaurant. Great service!!

Food is expensive for little portions. I have ordered the lemongrass tofu three times, and they charge me the chicken lemongrass price plus $1 dollar extra for substituting tofu! Totally ridiculous since tofu costs less. The vegetarian option is more expensive than the meat option, and I had very little tofu lemongrass in the dish, way less than the amount of chicken my friends have had when they got the chicken lemongrass. They don't have a vegetarian pho as it's all made in beef broth. I understand if they don't have vegetarian options to offer, but charging vegetarians more for accommodating them just makes me think they don't want my business.

I agree that the broth here is ONO. I like the spring rolls too, better than the other reviewer. The owner is real nice. It helps too that Pho South King is just a block from home.

I was so freaking tired that I picked up the fiance, drove a few blocks and parked in the nearest open spot on the street, which happened to be in front of Pho South King, which we hadn't tried before. It looked kind of like a crap-hole, but we figured sometimes crap-holes have really good food. About the food: The VEGGIE SPRING ROLLS satisfied my fried-food craving, but they seemed like they weren't homemade and were served with iceberg lettuce and thai basil. Where's the mint? Where's the romaine? $5.25 for 5 rolls. The fiance ordered SUMMER ROLLS (frickin' cheap: $2.95 for an order of 2 w/ shrimp, but veggie is also available). He said they were good, but not special. He said it's the sauce that makes the rolls, and it was fine. We both ordered PHO, medium size (there's medium and large). I really liked the soup. I didn't like the beef that was in mine, $5.76. The fiance said his beef balls were good. I didn't try them. Looked and sounded too scary for me. I was sad that the pho was served with basil, beansprout, and lemon, but not that cool Vietnamese cilantro that looks like a wing bean. I would order pho here again. Skip the spring rolls. The owner is really nice. Tip big. Hours: 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. M-Sat 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sundays "Parking in rear". --- 6/4/07 Got the vegetarian pho. It was really good. Had cilantro this time, but not the wing bean shaped one; rather the regular Chinese/Mexican parsley. But "YUM!"

The broth isn't memorable and they kind of skimped on the meat, but for a small hole in the wall joint, the pho here is alright. They gave me orange slices instead of lemons/limes. That was kind of different. I liked how there were lots of different types of hot sauce on the table. Service is quick and the older man who works there is super nice. Good place for a quick, healthy lunch.

I was expecting more from this place. I loved the noodles in the pho, it was balled up tightly and looked like they were hand made, unlike other places that I've had here in the island. The brooth here is extremely greasy. It does taste light, but not very flavorful. Not the worse pho I've had, but I've had a lot better. I give 2 stars, because this place feels like a sauna while you eat. They do have air conditioning, but it wasn't on.

I've been to this place at least 4 times and I've been disappointed every time. The beef pho has MSG and is mostly flavorless. The vermicelli noodle bowls don't have grilled/barbecued meat. Instead, the meat is sauteed, which has a mushy feel, instead of crispy like they should be. The only thing that is not bad is the meat with rice. It comes with a little bowl of broth that tastes like it has MSG too. The vegetarian options are not bad. There is a vegetarian soup and a vegetarian vermicelli bowl. My partner would probably give this place 4 stars based on their vegetarian options. I MIGHT go here if I were starving and nothing else were open. In general though, you can skip this place. I prefer Pho Minh Thu, Pho Thinh, and Pho 777.

When I attended UH Manoa in the Spring of 2007, Pho South King was the place I went for hot, filling, south-Asian soul food. It was an escape from campus-life and all the other things that can ruin the experience of island living (which tends to happen when you spend months in that spiritless death/tourist-trap known as Honolulu; I love Hawaii, but when any city caters strictly to the tourist industry at the expense of its spirit and sense of hospitality, it's all downhill from there). Pho South King saves you from that negative junk! The decor is beyond simple; there is nothing extravagant or pretentious. Everyone is welcome! I wish I could recall the many dishes I had, but my staple was, of course, pho. Servings were always large, filling the bowl, and plenty of veg was provided. I usually had veg pho, but I was always pleased with the chicken, as well. The amount of meat was fine, just enough to compliment and not so much that it dominated the meal. Aside from the low prices and great, simple food, I returned frequently to PSK mostly because of the owners. They recognized me after a few visits and were always friendly and welcoming. After having lived in large cities for several years, this experience was like being back in a small town. Last note on the quality of food: when my mom and her partner came to visit, we dined at some of Honolulu's most expensive restaurants, but when I brought them here after all that, they said this was their favorite. As Lynn said, "this was the most comforting and quality meal we've had yet, and the cost for four of us eating was the same price of the tip at any of the other places." Skip the long lines, the high prices, and the faux "atmosphere" of the tourist restaurants, and just go eat where the locals eat. Best food available.

I'm Cambodian. I know authentic Southeast Asian Cuisine. This place has some of the best Pho in town. On the island in fact. Their Vietnamese noodle soup is packed with seafood and flavor. The lady is so nice and friendly. The man took it personally when I got a parking ticket. It reminds me of a noodle place in the old country, except not quite so hot and humid. Shoots.

Their Pho is bland and watery. Wanted to pour some shoyu inside, but that would be WRONG. I think?

I tried combination Pho and a ginger chicken rice plate and also summer rolls for appetizer here tonight and it was good! Why is this place so empty all the time? It's good & cheap eats! The best part is that the Pho here and all the other dishes is about 1.50-2.00 less than all the other places I've been. $6.25 for a medium bowl of Pho and $7 for a large! The only thing bad I can say about the place is that the ambiance needs a little re-vamping and also the summer rolls have no thin slices of pork, no mint, and no chives. Just shrimp, iceberg lettuce and rice noodles inside. The peanut sauce has no crushed peanuts sprinkled on top..But they still managed to make it taste delicious! Oh yeah also the combination Pho is supposed to have tendon but we didnt get any in our bowl..I am giving 4 stars because despite that some typical igredients are missing, the food still tasted really good, our wallets thanked us, and we left very satisfied. The broth was just right. Not too salty and not watered down. We will definately be back sometime soon!

I came here for breakfast to cure my hangover from last night's activities. I ordered a medium #9, special combination with sliced steak, brisket, beef ball, and tendon. The beef portion was slightly skimpy, but the broth more than made up for it. This was the clearest broth I'd ever seen, with no hint of fat at all. The flavor was very clean, just beef stock with the subtle essence of onions. I told the owner how much I liked his broth and he proudly mentioned that he cooks it from 6am-6pm, extracting the maximum flavor from the beef bones. I guess getting a hangover wasn't so bad after all!
