I needed a bento at 5am in the morning. Where to go? I hit up Yelp and it tells me there's a place on Sand Island Access road that's open. The reviews seem good so I head over there. The menu was posted in the pictures, so I knew I wanted bento B., teri beef and mochiko chicken. The place was very easy to find at 5am since it was one of the many places lit up on the side of the road. Easy parking in front as well. I walk in and there are about 5 people in there already. Lots of bentos that look really good all ready to go. I ask the lady at the counter for 2 bento B and she happily gets them. Total was $12.04 - but I only had bills. I give her a $20 and she gives me back $8. OK, that alone will make me come back. The bento.... ok, most of these places seem to disappoint, but not this place. My favorite mochiko chicken was from Sakura in Aiea and this place is different.... but in a good way. Sweet and slightly spicy - it just grows on you. It's really good! Not only that, but there's a good portion for a hungry person! The teri beef was good - totally fine as expected and the teri sauce with the rice (delicious rice!) is great!!!!! A couple of edamame top off the bento. This place totally beats out what I usually purchase at Marukai before hitting the golf course. This is an awesome meal for a hungry person! This is my new favorite bento place on this island. The price is great. Service is great. I will go back again!

So Ono!!! Love this place, the food is absolutely delicious. Definitely gotta support local businesses! I had the Deluxe Omelette, can't wait to try the lunch items as well!

Busy place - where the old Bagel place used to be. I tried their mochiko chicken since it's supposed to be all the rave and I have to say I'm completely satisfied. Mac salad is delish too. All dishes are priced under $10 and CASH ONLY so bring the greens. This preggie is quite happy I had this for lunch today and I'll be sure to come back for some breakfast next time!

Lunch Box is located on Sand Island Access Road in the same complex as Blimpie and Lox of Bagels. If you're coming here during lunch, keep in mind parking will be minimal at this time and the wait for your food will be longer than usual. Many regulars call their orders in. There aren't that many tables to sit at but they also have a short counter against the wall. However, there's usually enough seating as most of the patrons take their food to go. I keep coming back here for the spicy mochiko chicken! If you like hot and spicy food like I do, you may be disappointed at first because I expected the chicken to be hot as in spicy hot. It's not-it's spicy as in delicious spices and flavoring spicy. The batter is really tasty and although the chicken is fried, it doesn't taste very heavy. It's my "go to" food when coming here and prefer it over the other types of chicken they serve. With every plate, you get a choice of macaroni salad or tossed salad. If you order the tossed salad, you get a choice of Italian or ranch dressing. They keep it pretty simple and it works in their favor. Their customer service is always good and they have a pretty efficient process. The only downside, in my opinion is they only accept cash-no debit/credit cards but there's an ATM located right outside of Lunch Box.

My hubby keeps telling me about this place and I finally made it to Sand Island. Aside from the parking issues there is during rush hour I really enjoyed the bento we got. My bento had fried noodles, a piece of teri beef, mochiko chicken with rice... OMG the mochiko chicken had lots of flavor and I so enjoyed licking my fingers.... mmmmmmm Teri beef, was soft and just as tasty. But when I ate the fried noodles, it was so darn tasty that I wanted more. I'm guessing that they added a bit of butter to fry this bad boy up because it was yummy in a un healthy way... hahahaha I'd eat there again! Thank you LUNCH BOX!

OK This is by far my FAVORITE Chicken place!!! I buy their chicken RAW and bring it home to fry....sooooo yummy! Great with a bowl of ramen or as the main dish for the night....The owners are young and hardworking and really deserve our business... I can't say enough about how much I LOVE their chicken!!! Bought 3 dozed pieces, put them in zip log bags and my daughter is taking them back to California....just gotta dust and fry and voila! Dinner....super good at that! Call them in advance to order your chicjen. I always keep a couple thawed out in my meat tray so I can eat whenever...I just buy it, bag in zip lock (2 per bag) and freeze.

Another great spot to have lunch, or pick up a bento, near sand island. I had the loco moco once and it was filling. Last week I had a bento. Great selection of meats to include in the bento and reasonably priced too. Located in the strip mall just before the road curves on to sand island, this place is next to the bagel shop (lox of bagels) and can be confused with some of the other plate lunch places nearby. However, I'll come here for their good priced bentos as I'm often on the go on my way to and from sand island. I'll come back again (if I forget my lunch at home, lol).

My favorite beach bento stop. Love their fried noodles and spicy mochiko chicken. Good prices and variety. Simple but comforting foods. Local style breakfast or lunch options. Fast service. Convenient location at Sand Island Access Rd when headed to town via Nimitz.

One of my boss' ordered us the mochiko chicken from here, and let me just say that it was AMAZEBALLS!!! So tasty & easy to eat!!! I have been craving it for months now, but just haven't had the time to go back and get some

It was after my scuba dive and this was beside the store so I have it a try. It was a good decision that I went since the food was good. I like the mom and pops feeling rather than fancy restaurant.

Parking during lunch hour is pretty tight as there are a lot of people trying to find parking. The service is pretty decent but usually pretty fast. I like the Mochiko Chicken and the Garlic Chicken here as well as getting a Bento which usually is the best bet. Both the Chicken selections were good enough to come back here but I can't say they are the best I've had. The only thing that would prevent me from coming back is the Parking which can be a challenge sometimes if there is a parking cool I'm there if not oh well go somewhere else. The portions are decent and more than enough to make me satisfied good place to go if you can to get lunch to eat at the park.

A co-worker brought me lunch from here and I'm so glad he did! Had their Salmon Katsu and Mochiko Chicken which was sooo delicious! My plate lunch came with two huge scoops of white rice (they ran out of brown), and a side salad. The Salmon was cooked really well and tasty on its own but I was dipping it in a Spicy Mayo sauce that made the taste even better. The Mochiko Chicken was so scrumptious with a noticeable flare of spice and the fried skin was so nom nom nommy! Although I didn't pay (my co-worker is the biggest gentleman around), from the other reviews I can surmise that the cost is quite cheap and when you factor in the portion sizes I can only love this place!

If I'm in the area, Lunch Box is the place I always go to! Their Spicy Mochiko is the winnahs! Not your ordinary mochiko chicken that is usually dark and batter-y, but instead this one has a nice crispy outside, and the chicken itself is moist and has a nice flavor. You can opt for mild or spicy, but you should always get the spicy, which is not spicy at all, but definitely tastes better than the mild. They deep fry the whole chicken thigh, then cut it into katsu-sized pieces, but the bone piece is definitely my favorite, that piece has the most flavor! You can order it as a regular plate, with two scoops rice and salad (mac or tossed with italian or ranch), or get it with fried noodles. The noodles are on the plain side, but a nice change from rice on occasion. Or you can get a combo plate with something else, although I am addicted to their spicy mochiko and can't seem to get myself to try anything else on their menu! Their menu can be found on their website: lunchboxhawaii.com/menu.… Parking - There are stalls along the front of the entire strip of stores, and cars are constantly coming in and out, so you should be able to grab a stall with no problems. Oh, and cash only...

Good and inexpensive local food. Lunch Box opens early for breakfast and it's served all day. Remember those public school days with a monthly rotating cafeteria menu??? Lunch Box is just that with a regular permanent menu as well. Friendly staff and comforting local food. PS: Their website is a bit outdated. The prices are raised $.50-$2.00 on all items. Still cheap eats nonetheless :D

I love the spicy mochiko chicken from here. There isn't too much breading like some places and it tastes delicious every time. I also like that they have bento combos that you can choose from. I advise that you make a phone order because they're always busy and parking is hard to find during lunch. It's on Sand Island Access Road which means lots of truck drivers which is why parking can be difficult. Everything I've tried from there is delicious. We go here for lunch all the time and there are no complaints from anyone.

I am the first out-of-towner to review Lunch Box! Yay! My hubby and I went here to grab a bite to eat before going scuba diving at Ocean Legends next door. The whole time during our stay in HI, we were hoping to find a dive that served delicious, but affordable food. LUNCH BOX was just that! We had the bento of mochiko chicken and teri beef. The rice was cooked perfectly. The mochiko chicken was soo delicious, and the teri beef was flavorful and tender. We also got a delicious (and large) musubi. It was so good that we went back a couple days later for another helping. =) Out of all the places we ate (and we ate at a TON of places), this was definitely one of our favorites. When we come back to Oahu, we will be sure to come back!

I like this place. it's a modern hole in the wall! yes, I know that's an oxymoron but walk in, you'll find the place isn't exactly "NICE". but it is a kitchen for sure, with things crammed here and there to offer anything you may need/want. condiments, cutlery, drinks, trash can, everything is self contained in this place. there's usually a pretty decent assortment of bento - not the largest variety by any stretch, but enough where you can at least find something you'll be content eating. quality is good, prices are reasonable, and you can either grab one of the bento or have something cooked to order, like a loco moco or regular lunch plate. the garlic chicken is good here, not overpowering like how some places sell it. the best comparison would probably be... sugoi's. but way cheaper, and without the ton of sweaty dudes working in a small, cramped kitchen area.

Very cheap food!!!! CASH ONLY! Today I went to Lunch Box Kitchen of HI. and I ordered oxtail soup. I also ordered a mix plate of furikaki chicken with hamburger steak and it was so ono! I recommend those two things!

I love Lunch Box Kitchen! I don't quite remember how I discovered this place. I think it had something to do with being hungry at work and only having the internet available to search for my favorite thing in the world...BENTOS! I LOVE bentos, maybe because they have a lot of things but in small portions and I'm very much obsessed with variety in little quantities (that way you can eat it ALL and not get full half way through!) Anyway, I think I've tried every bento that Lunch Box has to offer and none of them have failed me so far. Like all the other Yelpers have attested to so far, the mochiko chicken is delish! And I don't even like mochiko chicken...but the difference with this chicken is that it's almost a cross between garlic chicken and mochiko chicken so its got that spicy garlic goodness! It's also not at all oily like your usual mochiko chicken. The musubis here are also really good. Theyre huge and the middles are filled with pure goodness! I'm partial to the tuna one, but the konbu is good also. Writing about it is making me hungry...anyone want to join me for some Lunch Box tomorrow?

A friend picked up breakfast for a bunch of us at the office today. I had the fried rice omelette this morning, and it was great! Not salty & the egg wrapped around the rice wasn't over cooked. The portion was generous! Only problem was their online menu. We used the menu online to pre-order with my friend & then she was told when she picked up our food that the prices went up & they don't use the website anymore!?! Then take it down!?! Overall good food at a good price!

This is an updated review as it is my second. Since my last review I've come here at least a dozen more times. While most times I came here for my fav bento (Kombu musubi and mochiko chicken) I've also twice ordered a large pan of mochiko chicken to take to parties. The first time I ordered a large pan of mochiko chicken I called about an hour before I needed it. I had hoped they could hook it up by shear miracle. Even though they needed at least 4 hour notice (could have been 3) they said they could accommodate my request and have it ready in 20 mins. 20 mins!! They were pleasant when I picked it up and even threw in a little. The second was virtually the same experience which shows consistency although I did provide much more notice. My most recent experience was today. I went in for my usual bento which were sold out. When she asked me what I wanted I was at a loss desperately trying to find a second at choice or none at all. I told I needed a minute because the bento I prefer is sold out. She said, "hold on", and in less than a minute she made one for me. It's those consistent experiences that bring me back again and again. Thus upgrade to previous rating. 5 star!!

I love this little hole-in-the-wall! Located in a one story strip mall on Sand Island Access Road, the Lunch Box serves up local comfort food via bentos and plate lunch. This is a haven for blue collar workers so don't expect anything fancy or even very clean. Its a bare bones operation and you can see them making your food in the very, very, very open kitchen, but who cares because the food is delicious! Either you can grab a ready made bento or wait 10-15 minutes for a freshly made plate. The mochiko chicken here is wonderful and quite possibly my favorite EVER! Pricing is very reasonable with bentos under $5 & plate lunch at $6-8. 31 Yelps Challenge: #7/31

After my first time here it wasn't great. I've explored the.breakfast menu and now I go here every Saturday for breakfest. I eat the spam and egss. Cant.go wrong there but the spam is cooked the way I like it. The.panxakes are especially good. Plain and simple but filling and satisfying. It beats going to koa pancake house as eat I ng here is like eating home.cooked food...

When I used to work down Sand Island, I used to eat here all the time. I just recently went back there and the food was the same as I remember it. It's good cheap food for the working class. I really like their mochiko chicken and huge musubi. Winnahs.

I stop by this place at least a couple times a week, since I work in the area. It's a great local-style eatery with everything you'd expect to find at a typical Hawaiian plate lunch place, mixed in with a few unexpected hidden treasures. If you get there early in the morning (before 10 AM), they've got a kickass Spam Musubi that beats anything else I've found hands-down! (The secret is that they add an egg, so it's not just a typical Spam Musubi.) In addition, they usually feature a special Garlic Chicken dish for lunch that's super. Served up hot and fresh, it's got a lot of flavor and will definitely fill you up... you'll probably want to grab a mini size unless you've got one hell of an appetite. They do well on their side dishes as well, with extra detail paid to seasoning and flavors, taking the usually boring and ordinary fried rice and almost making it a separate dish just on it's own. If you go, you'll need to make sure you've got cash and don't procrastinate -- they're pau and out of there usually around 3PM!

Two words = SHOYU PORK! Everything else here is OK, but if you're lucky enough to eat here on certain Monday's you gotta get the shoyu pork! It's melt-in-your-mouth tender and delicious. The best shoyu pork i've ever had by far.

Misleading as ever...I went in to this place with a friend as soon as I got off the plane. We ordered the a bento box to go and went to sit along the shore line to eat. I had a seared beef with ahi tuna and a helping of side salad. One bite and I was in heaven. The food was cooked so well and the presentation was so simple that I was mislead into believing that it wasn't going to be much to remember, but I remember my first meal on the islands!

I never heard of Lunch Box Kitchen of Hawaii until 10 minutes ago. Someone in my office was raving about the mochiko chicken and collecting lunch orders. I was going to get a quick lunch some place else but then I thought, " I should check Yelp! I'll see if Emi wrote a review. And sure enough she did. So did a few kther Yelpers. That is why I told the designated office lunch guy to grab me the Special Combo (Mochiko Chicken, Garlic Ahi, Teri Beef) for $7.00. I am glad I did. The mochiko is very tasty and crispy, how it should be. The teri beef is tender and lean, with very little fat. Sadly, the garlic ahi was sold out so they gave me the mahi mahi instead. The one problem I have with my plate is the mac salad. I'm looking at my plate at this very moment and I cannot bring myself to finish this scoop of watery, grainy macaroni. This corner of my plate really doesn't appeal to me. I should have ordered tossed salad instead. Soupy salads aside, this is a delicious lunch and I'll be back for the mochiko and teri beef.

Any place I go to for the first time, I order the "special" thinking this should be featured item for that restaurant. Nothing is special about the special at this kitchen. I chose to eat in thinking this would be a true test of freshness. Over cooked fish with little or no flavor, tough teri beef and no flavor, dry, overly breaded deep fried chicken. Sadly, the best thing on plate was three small pieces of edomane. They are joining growing list of local fast food outlets that are rushing to plate there food at flavors expense Nice open kitchen design made me hopeful that the food would taste freshly cooked...not!

i like everything about this place - prices are right, workers are good, open early, parking in front, and food is fantastic! had the mochiko chicken and teri beef combo. i am not usually a fan of mochiko chicken but other yelpers said it was good so i wanted to try it. i like that their food is not oily, i hate oily. their mochiko is different - deep fried and most of the taste in the skin, it could use a little sauce on the side but is good nonetheless. their teri beef was soft and perfectly marinated. i like that their teri is not gingery tasting (i also hate ginger). the bf ate everything on his plate! he had the special combo (mochiko chicken/garlic ahi/teri beef). can't wait to eat here again, lunch box knows what it is doing!

I usually help my wife out on my days off at her office in Kalihi. One thing we have a hard time doing on these days is finding places to eat. That comes more with being relatively unfamiliar with the area eateries (as I've never really worked close by) So we've taken the time to drive around and find some of the smaller, out of the way establishments. My wife led me here on a lunch date a few weeks ago, and we just made a repeat trip last week. The first go around was around 12:30 and the bento's were a bit lacking so I didn't have a chance to try them. BUT, the garlic chicken (spicy edition) was a kick in the mouth! The breading was light and sweet, and with the added light spicy kick, it is unbelieveable. Coupled with the teri beef (it's on the sweet side; I know some folks don't like that, but I do) grilled mahi (was a tad dry, but not bad for a plate lunch place) and edamame and what originally looked like a ho hum special combo was surprising, especially for $8. Last week, we headed out there early and I picked up a garlic chicken bento for lunch, but I also tried their japanese breakfast. I had the grilled mahi (again a tad dry) and saba (which was good) It definitely hit the spot. Much lighter than the usual breakfasts (which they also have; their breakfast special is obviously geared for the area workers lol) yet filling. All in all, it has what you'd expect from your typical plate lunch place along with a few pleasant surprises. Parking can be a challenge early in the morning and around lunch time, but manageable if you don't get freaked out by big rigs whizzing by. Also, I recommend picking up vs. eating in as there is limited seating within which can get really cramped when the lunch rush arrives (and the line snakes out the door)

So so good! The owner Tina and her husband were so awesome and friendly! Their food was so good! Moco Loco was amazing, Michiko chicken, Teri chicken and Mac salad were to die for! Recommend this place to anyone!
