Tried this place out fairly recently and wen with their chicken katsu curry. The curry was not the typical brown curry Japanese style that I prefer but it was made with bits of beef, carrot, and onion which made it savory. Lots of katsu and rice were provided for the fair price. Huge menu of options to try out and when you're not looking for something fancy, this place is alright. They provide quick service for your take out order.

Big mistake to stop by here for lunch today!! FYI: the musubi & mochi chicken mini PAC is 4.75, (Was 3.95) my opinion, not worth it!! I could have gotten something better for this price!! & for the rude service & my order wasn't even right!! I place my order, bento pac, well done spam. As she tells my order to the cook, The lady said in Chinese, the" f..." Lady wants well done. How rude, thanks to my dad, sending me to Chinese school, my small kid days, It pays off!! I didn't want to bother, letting her know, that I understand. I let it go, rude!! & when my order was ready, she just left it on the counter, w/out even letting me know or calling out my order #!! RUDE!! RUDE!! RUDE!! & my spam wasn't well done!! Waste of money!! Tip: make sure you check your order.

I'm not sure why I haven't been to loco moco before. I frequent the koko marina shopping center and always end up going to zippys or paina cafe for food. The great thing about loco moco compared to the other food establishments here is that it's open late (until 9!). That means when I finish work really late, I have a to-go place to eat. Just beware though, that the workers don't like customers sitting inside to eat so close to closing time. It's ok though because there are plenty of open tables outside too. Onto the food. They have a huge menu, mostly taped to the windows and walls. A large plate will run you about $9 and mini plates are available too. I got a Mochiko chicken plate that lasted 3 meals!! The portions are huge!! The Mochiko chicken was perfectly cooked and the Mac salad was tasty. There is plenty of parking and loco moco offers a huge variety of food and dessert. I'll be back!

Despite reading all the bad reviews, I came here to grab a quick bite to-go before hitting up some beaches. I had a positive experience but maybe I just came on a really great time and day?? Came a little before noon and got my food in 10 minutes flat. Ordered the Curry Katsu Chicken with white rice and a side of macaroni and my first thought was holy crap the portion is huge O_O Good thing I'm sharing! Chicken was piping hot right out of the fryer, rice was warm, macaroni salad was cold. Although the curry was just a curry sauce, the entire dish was freakin delish! I think it cost me $12 bucks but totally worth it. I cannot speak for the other items on the menu that others seem to rant about, but if you decide to stop by please get what I got. You're welcome.

Pay attention to the reviews about quality of food and service. Then find another place to eat. We live in Hawaii Kai so we want to support the neighborhood establishments and we're always looking for an alternative to Zippy's, especially when it's crowded there. Loco Moco has a local menu but don't expect "local" prepared food. We ordered the adobo omelette with fried rice. Don't order this if you are expecting adobo. There was meat with gravy in the omelette and the fried rice was dry and tasteless. But it gets better, we also ordered an adobo plate lunch and got a sea of gravy with meat chunks. It did not have the taste of adobo. This plate needs to be renamed. Any reference to adobo in their menu should be deleted. And it took almost twenty minutes to get our food and it's only because we inquired after waiting and watching orders placed after ours filled.... We're looking forward to going back..., when ownership or management changes.

Wow....Loco Moco Koko can't go wrong with mochiko chicken. This is my go to place for lunch. Close to work, lots of food and ono....

Don't expect much and you wont be disappointed. In my opinion this place ranks with a fast food joint. Food was just average, maybe sub par and service was equivalent to going to a McDonalds. Loco Moco was probably the worse I had, my daughters Chicken Katsu was very good, but my brothers Shrimp plate was terrible.

For better customer service go to L&L which is only 5 minutes away in a car! Lol. The food is always inconsistent! One day it tastes BOMB & the next, it SUCKS Some days I get little portioning, But luckily the LAST time I ate here (Monday) I had fresh hot food that had huge portioning! Food overall tastes good , I guess it really depends on who cooks it & who takes your order!

I hope the next time I go there to eat, the lady will not be on the phone and just focus on the customer. I hope she will be very attentive to the customer and make sure she will pay more attention and just help the customer. After I left the restaurant, they didn't give me the correct order. I made it clear that I wanted all brown rice for the mini plate and no macaroni salad, but they gave me white rice and mac salad. I hope the next time I do eat there again, I want to check the order and make sure that I really get it correctly so that way I will be eat there again

Never been here before. I got the chicken stir-fry, which was awful, had no taste. My husband got the Ramen with the egg, he said that was awesome. We dinned in, there were maybe 2 other people in there while waiting for our food. We sat on the booth closes to the register/counter and soda machine. Anyways are order was finally up and was sitting there no one told us it was up until we finally glanced that way. What caught our eyes was the steam from my husband Ramen. So ok we let that go, people make mistakes. As we're in the middle our meal we watched the man or cashier serve 4 adult Japanese tourist there food to their table AND brought them extra napkins and chopsticks cause he forgot it the first time. I could not believe the racism right in front of my eyes! Never going back there again!

In my younger day when I use to thug soda for Pepsi Cola............I had the Hawaii Kai route, and I use to stop by this place just to have the beef stew. It's been a very long time since I've eaten here...........and a lot has changed. Looks like the restaurant has been renovated, and looks good! Unfortunately, the food at this place, especially the beef stew has gotten bad! Looks like there is a new owner, and the food just doesn't taste the same. The beef stew I ate was just bleh, at best..........beef stew was not tasty at all. More like a ketchup/tomato based stew. I ordered my beef stew with brown rice & toss salad. I gotta tell you, it was not much of a toss salad if you consider cutting a few triangle pieces of iceberg lettuce, with a cut tomato a salad. I think I would have been better off taking the mac salad instead. Overall, the beef stew plate was quite expensive, and the meal was not worth it. I don't think I'll be coming back to this place for a long time.

Worst service on Wednesday. Me and my gf went to koko head for our day off, and decided maybe we'll get shave ice at loco moco. Went in and asked if they took card, and grumpy lady said yes. So we decided to get a burger and shave ice. But suddenly lady starts saying no card unless we paid over $10! Whats up with that!? I know they have to pay a fee for card processing, but it aint more than a $1! SO we left. Not going back there again!

I don't understand why this place has bad reviews. I've been here 10 + times and the food is always great. The lau lau is the best I've ever had and the pork or chicken adobo has a nice garlic/vinegar taste. Love the garlic eggplant as well! The steak and garlic shrimp combo is full of flavor. Cold ginger chicken is a favorite for my husband and he always asks for it from Loco Moco. They give a big portion of the ginger sauce too, no skimping. The service is standard for a place where you order at the counter and I've never had to wait an unreasonably long time for my meal. I would recommend stopping in for a plate lunch!

  • Mark H.

I loved the food and serving sizes here. This is how the servings should be, hella big! In the mainland Bay Area the servings are skimpy like you on a diet. This place was fat! I loved it. I was hella full

This review is only for their breakfast. I was very surprised at the amount of food and the quality of food they serve for breakfast - which you can get all day. Gemma and I ended up ordering from both Fat Boys and Loco Moco one morning and one order of fried rice and bacon at Fat Boys was almost $10.00 where as toast, eggs, hash browns was $6.00 at Loco Mocos. The wait time is very short and we were able to just grab our food and sit outside with the dog and Logan. I'm glad to know that I have another go-to spot for cheap breakfast. This place is beating Zippy's right now for cheap food.

If you're in a rush, I wouldn't recommend coming here. Service is bad. My boyfriend and I just went on the Mānoa Falls hike wanting a plate lunch to bring to the beach, so we decided to go here for some food. We walked in and waited for the cashier to take our orders. She was too busy fixing the drinks and grabbing more drinks to add to the front. I mean, it was pretty slow so she could do it after taking our orders. And after ordering, we waited for our food. Might I add again that it was really slow so we really had no idea why the order was taking long, too. All in all, service is bad.

I went in to grab some grub after taking out some stress at the nearby rifle range. The first thing I saw that caught my eye was the pork cutlet. I ordered the regular size and an Arizona Iced Tea. The lady at the counter gave me my total which was $8 and some change, which couldn't be right since my plate was $8 on it's own. I asked her if she put me down for a regular and she replied that she did. Maybe there was some happy hour deal going on or something? I don't know. This was my first time here. When my order came, it was only a mini. Ugh, whatever. I grabbed my food and left. I pulled into the nearby boat harbor to enjoy my food only to find that the paper thin pieces of pork were way overcooked. To make things worse, whoever cut the pieces couldn't even cut them all the way through. Normally I'd say whatever, but these pieces were paper thin! Come on... I ended up throwing more than half of it away as it was just inedible. First time, last time.

Just went to get food and I ordered the garlic shrimp plate. It came with these little shrimp nothing like the picture. It also had no garlic and I don't think the cook even seasoned the shrimp. I usually like the food from here but idk what happened this time.

After snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, I had a craving for loco moco and this was the closest restaurant so we decided to try it out. The loco moco which was ok, definitely not as good as what I had in the big island, but it hit the spot after snorkeling. My gf and buddy had fried chicken with rice, which in hindsight I think I should have got. Overall, this place was ok. The meals were roughly $10-11, but the drinks are a joke. You get one pour at the soda machine each additional pour costs .50. I wouldn't return here, the food was mediocre.

  • Randy M.

Let me start by saying that "Loco Moco" is one of my favorite dishes on the island! I was super hungry and had to return some movies next door at Walgreen so I figured I would give this place a try. How could I go wrong with their signature dish I thought to my self when I ordered! The beef was as tough as my rubber slipper, the eggs were well done, the rice was soggy, and the macaroni salad was just noddle and mayo. The dining room seemed to be clean but after sitting and waiting for my food when I stood up I nearly stuck to my seat. Dirty! Sorry Loco Moco but you are not a "drive Inn" and you are doing a dis-service to your community by serving poor quality food....

I went here for breakfast this morning with my cousin. We both got the big breakfast plate. It comes with 2 eggs, 2 pieces of spam, 2 pieces of bacon and 2 pieces of Portuguese sausage over a bed of rice. From the time I opened the Styrofoam container, I knew this was going to be bad. To start, the eggs were still runny. I ordered scrambled and I like it to be cooked all the way through. If I wanted to have runny eggs, I would have ordered sunny side. Did I send it back? No. They should know how to cook eggs. Next, both the spam and Portuguese sausage were burnt. Then there's the rice. Half of it you couldn't eat because it was hard. Not the kind of hard from not being cooked, but from it being cooked then drying out. Are they serious? You're better off hoping to McDonald's for their breakfast platters. This horrible breakfast experience didn't start there though. The cashier delivered food to a table of 5 that was sitting next to us. When it came to our food being ready, he called us over to pick it up from the counter. It wasn't that much of a hassle. But come on dude, really? You guys next to get your act together. Seriously.

Not that bad..... I wasn't going here....I was actually going to Fatboys but they don't open until 1030 and their yelp page said 7am....crazy. Anyway, I couldn't decide what I wanted and asked if they could make me katsu curry and they said yes(breakfast of champions). I also ordered gaugee...just cause. They weren't busy because it was like 930am so my order came pretty fast. When I got home and opened the gaugee, it was piping hot. It was good....the filling had nice flavor. It was a little on the expensive side, but tasty. The katsu curry was huge! The tossed salad inside was small but that was so they could fit the two scoops of rice and a large serving of katsu in the container. It was hot and it tasted good. Based on what I had, I would go back again.

Nasty, low rent food. Who gets a hot dog on a hamburger bun? Owners are cutting corners. If it were Italian food I'd expect hot dogs or baloney in my spaghetti.

Got the fried chicken with mushroom gravy. Gravy was unreal. Chicken was pretty good too. Good sized portion. Recommended

Ordered 2 plates and 5 seconds later my husband wanted to change his order. The lady told us no too late! I said "they made it already?" She said " yeah we fast" so my husband had to order what he really wanted and pay for that too! Expecting our food to come right out since "their fast" we end up waiting 20 minutes for it. What a bitch.

Meh . . . .mediocre local plate lunch kine food. Nothing to write home about. Took forever to get our food because of all the call ahead take out orders they were working on.

This place is really a hit or miss. I placed a big order for (65) mini-plates and was concerned that the food would not be ready on time. Luckily, it was ready when I asked for it and the mochiko chicken was tasty and good. So I thought that this would be a good place to eat for a quick bite. On another occasion, we had a choice of either Zippy's or Loco Moco in Hawaii Kai. Because of my previous experience, I thought this would be a good choice. I placed an order for four plates and had to wait for 30 MINUTES. Every person that ordered AFTER me paid, got their food, and left, while I waited and waited. To top it off, when I FINALLY received my food after half an hour, the plates were served with brown rice. When I asked about it, because I don't eat brown rice, the lady told me "I didn't charge you extra." I told her, "But I didn't order brown rice, and I don't even like brown rice. Why didn't you tell me that you ran out of white rice, to begin with?" I was not happy, and I don't understand how a plate lunch establishment can run out of rice at noon on a Saturday morning. When I placed my order, the guy told me that they only accepted cash. So my husband had to go to our car and get my wallet, while the guy just stood there. During the long 30 minutes, I noticed that another customer was paying with her credit card and it made me think, "What the h*#@?" It was then that I realized one register was labeled, "Cash Only". SO why didn't the guy tell me that he could take my order at the other register?!? He clearly was using both registers during the time I was there! The fact that 1) we had to wait for 30 minutes (and had to be somewhere at a certain time), 2) they didn't have the forethought or common sense to accommodate my credit card payment, and 3) we were served something without the courtesy of letting us know really PISSED ME OFF. That was THREE strikes in just ONE visit! I won't be going here anymore. That's for sure. The service is bad; communication or lack of communication is WORSE!

Stopped by here real quick to grab a bite before heading to beach. Me and bf ordered the chicken katsu meal, but bf wanted just ramen broth and the lady was sweet enough to serve a good size container of broth for him. Chicken katsu was crunchy! Just the way I like it

My nephews from Seattle wanted L&L, so I took them here instead. I can handle the greasy local food here, L&L, not so much. Otherwise, Zippy's is around the corner. Zippys has brown rice. We took a look at the new Fat Boy's around the corner, but was not sure of their menu.

I don't know if I was just super hAngry or what, but that mini #1 (loco moco) was like eating Gravy Covered Heaven. Loco moco = white rice, a side of macaroni salad, eggs and a beef patty that is topped with gravy. I think that was my first time ever trying a loco moco...I like! I stopped here for breakfast on my drive along Kamehameha Highway. The sign said it opened at 9:00 AM on Sundays but I was in there at 845, so, I don't know what to tell ya. I paid just under $7 for breakfast, not bad considering how much I paid for a lot of other meals in Waikiki.

  • Sandy L.

This place was just OK. If you're giving me the option of ordering BBQ mix plate, I actually prefer L&L Hawaiian. But, since there isn't one of these in the area then I guess this would suffice. This isn't a place where you're trying to find amazing food but rather to sustain your hunger. We ordered the BBQ mix plate which was enough food for two. Very saucy and salty so soak it all up with your rice.

    (2)
  • Dennis L.

We stopped by to grab a lunch plate on the way to the beach. After looking through their vast menu options, we decided to go with the BBQ mixed plate to share. It was decent, but nothing really to rave about. I looked over at another person's katsu chicken and couldn't believe the quantity they got. The large mixed plate easily fed the two of us and got us ready for a day at the beach. Strangely, this place looked and tasted like L&L.

This place has great food. I have tried Zippy's and various other Loco Moco joints but this place has consistently good food. The Mochiko chicken is the best and the seafood platter is also very delicious. Would highly recommend it, try the mochiko chicken and the seafood.

I ordered a plain hot dog & fries. The hot dog which tasted super funky and seriously, I really hope it was a hot dog. The fries were uncooked and soggy. The loco moco smelled funky too.

I have read the reviews AFTER eating their take out today, & I have to call BS! This was by far the best loco moco we've ever had, including home made! 2 hand formed ground beef patties, savory gravy & a cooked perfectly FRESH over easy egg! Bomb! In our 5 person group we also got mochiko chicken & spam musubi...good, good, good! I got the Tuesday special, the pork tofu...wow! Tons of pork, tofu & Chinese greens...a smooth flavorful gravy...excellent! Tried the mixed jello cup dessert, & it, too, was delicious...red, green & yellow jello, interspersed with almond jello...too good. After we ate, I called the counter man, explaining who I was. He remembered us...I'm sure he was bracing himself for a complaint, but when I told him that his food was great & the loco moco was the best in Hawaii, he was appreciative & urged us to return...I believe that if you ever complain about a place, then you should also give kudos to them when it's done right!! Give Loco Moco drive-in a try...you won't be sorry!!

After a morning hike we were hungry and because i had a pretty good experience the last time with this restaurant we decided to pay them another visit. This place is a step up from L & L's, a wee bit more classy. haha. Anyway the food is good, the portions are pretty big but then again when did plate lunches cost 8 - 9 bucks? wow. but overall i like this place and i like that tapioca dessert that they have in the cold boxes.

My belly hurts. A mini is enough! Got the loco moco for a traditional feel and enjoyed with ketchup until about the last two minutes when I thought my tummy might burst. Everyone should do this once.

What happened to this place? Change in ownership perhaps? We used to come here about 2 to 3 times a month to get take out on the way home and absolutely loved it. Comfort food for a good price. For whatever reason, we hadn't stopped in for about a month or two and recently came back for a visit since I wanted to eat garlic chicken for dinner. I used to have a few favorites that I would rotate through depending on my mood. Loco Moco, garlic chicken, hamburger steak, beef curry, chicken Katsu, etc, etc...We even would cater from them for parties. No more. I'll be looking elsewhere from now on. Anyway, my last visit was disappointing to say the least. Although there was a drastic improvement in the friendliness of the counter staff, the quality of food had really gone downhill. Also the restaurant was completely empty except for us. What's weird is that the menu hasn't changed, just the staff including the cook. That should've tipped us off, but they were so nice and pleasant, I shrugged it off and placed my order, hamburger steak and garlic chicken mix. They used to give so much, that two people could eat and be satisfied. The quantity has certainly gone down, but quality is really what we're all looking for right? Well, sad to say, my once "go-to" plate lunch place is no more. I will NOT be returning. Although the gravy on the hamburger steak tasted the same, the meat for the burgers is definitely more gritty with some tiny pieces of bone, the kind you would find in really poor quality hot dogs. Yuck! I hated the crunch of the hamburger. Stopped eating that. The garlic chicken did not look or smell the same, but it tasted ok except for one piece which I ate half of before realizing it did not taste right and threw it out. I think they mixed old chicken with fresh pieces. The one I ate, third piece in had a section of cold fat in it. Needless to say I did not feel well after that meal. You know when you feel sick and think about all the things you ate then get to that particular thing that made you feel bad. That uneasy queasy feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you finally pin point the evil culprit. Well thats the feeling I got when I thought about the garlic chicken... I'm feeling a little queasy just thinking about it now. Go to Zippy's or anywhere else. Hell even McDonald's would've been better.

Typical Hawaiian BBQ fare: loco moco, fried this, fried that, rice with macaroni salad. Cardiologists probably don't like their patients eating here. I had a fish plate that had fried shrimp and a fried fish and chicken teriyaki. I'm not used to eating fried anymore, but the fried stuff goes well with the rice. The chicken teriyaki seemed to be comprised of random chicken bits, lots of gristle or fat, and some sauce. Hubby had chicken katsu. The breading on his (of course I ate his too!) was nice, crispy and light. My son had a ramen bowl, which had fish cakes and veggies in it and was a big portion for him. Service for us was good, provided by a couple of friendly high school age guys who helped us out with the menu and gave me an extra plate for my light-eating toddler.

I am big on the 3 strike rule...You serve crap 3 times to me...You get me sick 3 times...I don't come back! Considering most people only give one strike rules I think I was willing to give these guys every chance I could. There are so many amazing places to eat not only in Hawaii but Hawaii Kai...this isn't one of them at least until they start respecting the customer... I don't know what happened to this place...the food at one time was at least as good as most L&L's but one day everything changed and I ended up being given at 3 different times ROTTEN AHI....on the third strike when ordering the Ahi I pulled the fish a part first before I ate it...not only did is smell bad, it was covered in slime and was clearly beyond edible...How could they serve this to me? Did they think I wouldn't notice the taste or smell thinking I would dip it in the Mayo sauce and just eat it? I never write such a horrible review nor have I ever written one so short but this place should pay for the pain I went through for being poisoned! I would not recommend anyone going here...period!

Went here cuz hubby wanted to try the "Loco Moco". ugh. It looked disgusting to me, but he said it was good. I had the fried shrimp half plate. It was yummy. Their mac salad was good. My BIL had some sort of spicy chicken, which was good also. Hubby ordered a side of spam, just to get the full effect. Have you ever tasted spam? No? You're not missing much!

Decent option if you're hungry in Hawaii Kai. I got the hamburger deluxe with fries and mac salad for about $6. The hamburger was fine, no real char broiled or grilled taste, though. My husband got the seafood combo for about $9-10 which is kind of a deal for the amount of food you get, 2 big slabs of chicken, a thing of fish, and a few fried shrimp on a huge mound of rice and mac salad. My friend got the mini mochiko chicken which looked ok. I wouldn't make any special trip to eat here if I wasn't in the area.

  • Christopher T.

I live in Hawaii Kai, but don't usually go to this Loco Moco. As far as food, it is mediocre at best. Generic or bland and not nearly as good as most plate lunch places on the island. The service is horrible bad as the cashiers seldom speak enough English to understand what you are saying let alone get your order right if it deviates from their menu. I wanted a kalua pig plate. No cabbage no lau lau. I asked if they had a plate with just kalua pig. All the cashier could do was point to the paper printouts on the board to the right. I asked if i could get a plate without lau lau and just kalua pig. He said ok. I asked if it was without the lau lau and cabbage and he said yes. I then asked why he was ringing up the same plate with lau lau if I didn't want that, he said its too late it's already in. This is where his understanding of simple English started to really get worse. He started cutting me off from talking saying "yea" or "kalua pig" demonstrating that he could not comprehend anything beyond simple dialogue. Now I understand there are people that come to Hawaii or the US to find a better life or make money and might not speak English as a first language, but when you act rude and start saying your own thing because you can't understand, then that's another thing. My order was wrong, it was about 80-90% cabbage and a little kalua pig. For $9.75. I'm sorry but I can go to Ala Moana and get a plate with all kalua pig for $8 better than this and I bet the rent there is a lot higher than this place. Sad to day the place looks nice but the flow of incompetent workers and unskilled cooks makes it a failure. Btw, the whole staff is composed of Chinese that have English as their second language. And I'm Chinese. I'm not saying this to discriminate but this kind of food and service I expect from a place selling hotdogs from a stand in Chinatown. I've lived here all my life and the plate lunch place that was here before was way better. This is one of those places where I would investigate the books to see if they follow labor laws and standard procedures, because I can't see them staying in business with such a lack of quality in their food or ability to serve people. Cons: -can't understand English. -food is horribly generic. -poor customer service.

this place is convenient and clean. i love their delicious local grinds. the owners are cantonese and are friendly but "efficient." i learned my lesson from last time that the regular size can feed two people for lunch, so we got a mini Loco Moco for breakfast, to show my bf what a loco moco is. we loved the eggs over easy on top of the hamburger patty and eating it with rice and gravy and mac salad. $5.50 is a bit expensive for a small loco moco, compared to Rainbow Drive-Inn's $3.75, but i think it's well worth it, considering that it was just down the street from where we were, the cleaniness factor, taste, atmosphere and the gas it would have taken had we gone to Rainbow's. (we ended up at Rainbow's for a late lunch anyway)

Just so you know, we only had breakfast... But I really wouldn't want to come back for anything else. Also, I really really looking forward to some awesome food, and we ended up eating at a chain. But I think that's not it. I think "it" is that the food was bad. And the service. That was bad too. Also I didn't see a drive in here? What's with that? I had a vegetarian The minute I opened it juices began spewing out. I know omelets have watery stuff inside them, but this was a bit much. And something about it tasted not good. I. Not sure if it was the tomatoes or just the omelet over all, but it wasn't that good. Also people in my group had to get up and ask for the coffee they had already ordered. Not good. On the bright side, the ham was pretty good? The hash browns were more like tater lots, and were very deep fried. :(

I ordered a mini hamburger steak plate which comes with one huge scoop rice and another huge scoop mac salad. I enjoyed it. I also ate every last bite but it might've been because I just came straight from the beach and was starving. My friend ordered the mochiko chicken plate. He was upset. Their was no chicken meat within the fried batter. And one piece looked like the chicken's spine or something; it was nasty. The girl at the counter was really pleasant and she kept the tables clean.

Worst loco moco I've ever had. I was starving and after three bites, I threw it out and went to Zippy's. Since Fat Boys opened up a few doors down, I don't know who in their right mind would come here instead of there. Sorry Loco Moco.

Sad update sorry to report...this past Thursday evening, bought a beef curry bowl...these guys DO NOT taste their foods??? When I say it is salty, I am saying it as S-A-L-T-L-Y! One could even smell the salt before bringing it to your mouth! I called immediately and complained and told them how salty it was, the woman on the line said 'oh sorry, I 'll let the cook know to taste what he cooks!..". Why do we keep coming back? I can only think for the convenience...

Family stopped by after snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. This was our 1st place for islander flavor (having just come from LA the day before). We had the BBQ Mix Plate. We loved it. The portions are HUGH... BBQ Chicken, Teri Beef, Beef Kalbi, two scoops of rice & mac salad. We also stopped by the Loco Moco in Ko Olina later in the week. Different owner (guess different menu... still good eats)

I ordered the teriyaki flat-steak plate, and it was fantastic. The sauce is just amazing, and tastes wonderful when it mixes with the rice, cabbage, and mac&cheese. Their attitude could use some work, but the food quality definitely made up for it.

I was really digging for some quick meals after my baseball game in Kailua. It was Sunday evening and many shops closed by 6PM in Kailua, so drove home in Hawaii Kai. I wasn't feeling Teddy's so I searched for what's open on my Android Yelp. Not much. This popped up. I remember seeing this small joint when I shopped at Foodland next door. I didn't give them any look because I knew they couldn't live up to what I had in other places. But because I was so hungry, decided to give this place a shot. Your typical Hawaiian plate lunch shop. What you expected are all available. Even the prices are all same as other shops. It's almost as these plate lunch owners do secret meetings annually and set prices together - otherwise how else do you justify same $8.95 meal? I got the BBQ combination meal. It was good, but probably because I was really hungry. What I liked the most about this place was that they substitute toss salad for free instead of mac salad. Other shops don't even offer this substitution, so kudos to Loco Moco. The dine-in looked clean and modern, I can see myself dining here after visiting Hanauma Bay or Koko Head. I'm sure others do as well. I'd visit again, but probably only because I live so damn nearby and have no other options for plate lunches.

This place is so disappointing. I ordered the BBQ Short Rib Plate, and the meat was not cooked to the core. The meat was still red at the bones. The mac salad was pretty nasty (I don't like mac salad to begin with). The worst thing was their service. I will never go back to this place! I was so embarrassed to bring my friend here. He is from Guam, and he looks Samoan. They were so rude to him when they told him they don't accept American Express. They could've been nicer about something like that. The guy just kinda threw the card back to him. My friend was so chill that he didn't even care, but I told him I felt so bad for him to get that kind of treatment. Also, they were mopping the floors when I went there. It wasn't even closing time. The scent of Clorox and cleaning agents were horrible! I lost my appetite, that I suggested to my friends we eat outside. I was even telling my friends that I was going to post this on Yelp. I don't recommend this place at all! Go to the Zippy's nearby instead.

I think it changed management since the last time I visited a few years back. I ordered a mini-garlic chicken. Somewhat disappointing. The chicken was soggy (not crunchy) but somewhat tasty. Their healthy stir frys looked good. Maybe I'll try that next time.

Pretty good food (though their chili tastes rather "ketchupy" & quite spicy). Service is fast & friendly. Don't like that they charge 50 cents for refills from their self-service soft drink fountain. Places with self-service fountains should not charge for refills. Period.

Gross. I kept wanting this place to be good since its close to home and the other plate lunch place hasn't been impressing either but, no. I've never had a good experience here and i gave them 5 chances. The meat is always over cooked and extremely salty. The service was good once and bad 4 times. Don't eat I the restaurant unless you wanna smell like smoke for the rest of the day. Maybe they have no vent or something. I don't know. I'd rather make the drive to Rainbows.

If you like fresh fish try their Garlic Ahi and ask for the teriyaki sauce on the side, it's cooked perfectly and not tough! Comes with a scoop of rice and MAC salad (Mini size). Service was friendly and the place is very clean. I try to make it my Thursday night stop before the 6:30pm Hanauma Bay Lecture. Loco Moco's is way better cut of beef than what Foodland used to serve as their steak plate; ask Loco Moco for mediium rare; it's priced more than what Foodland used to charge but you'd expect that for a better plate of steak wouldn't you? Each time I order the Teriyaki Ahi, they tend to forget to give me the Terriyaki sauce which is provided to you in a little tub with a top cover. Sometimes when I don't check, I end up with just Garlic sauce Ahi which isn't too bad anyway.

This is my first review, so here goes nothin. Loco Moco is in the same shopping center with Foodland and Kona Brewing Co. We stumbled upon it looking for Ba Le, which wasn't there. So, after a nice morning of snorkeling in Hanauma, we decided to try it out. All of their items on the menu are available as mini or regular. I chose to order a mini chicken katsu and my partner got the kalua pork plate with lau lau pork. The mini came with one scoop of mac salad and one scoop of rice; the regular plate came with two of each. The food was excellent! We were much happier with Loco Moco's food than we were with Zippy's, which is in the same plaza. It is very clean inside and also a good value too!

Hi went there yesterday & was checking out the menu couldn't make up my mind - the cashier was so RUDE!!! I asked if he could substitute rice for noodles and he stepped back and folded his hands and said NO and looked at me like i was stupid!! Oh no he didnt - but yes he did I left and went to eat somewhere else - When Loco Moco was owned by the previous owner - customer service was amazing and so was the food!!! aint going back there anytime soon!!!

Like fish???!!! I've always said the only way to eat fish is raw like in sashimi or poke. But if you like your fish cooked go to this place. The grilled garlic mahi is great. And even the mini has a generous portion. The cooks there really know how to cook fish. Never dry or tasteless. And don't let them tell you they don't do grilled garlic mahi. They do on request.

Stopped by after a morning at Hanauma Bay. Didn't know what we were in for, but actually not bad on the local grindz. From what we ordered, reminded me of typical L&L type fare but with quite a bit more on the menu. I had the Mixed BBQ plate. Nothing was out of the ordinary, like I said, I could get this at L&L. Not a bad thing, prices were similar. Not disappointed but not pleasantly surprised either. Tried the Chicken Katsu, and this was actually quite outstanding. Perfect crunch on the outside and juicy moist chicken on the inside. Good flavor and good katsu sauce, whatever the brand. Mac salad was better than average, very mayo heavy, so if you don't like that, you might not dig it. Tried some of the Seafood Plate. Breaded and fried mahi and shrimp. Not all that if you ask me. I wouldn't order that again. But I've had the same thing at L&L and I didn't like it much there either. After having been on the island a few days now, I would have to say that Loco Moco loses a star because the guy taking the order at the counter wasn't all that friendly. Now, I might not have noticed that in L.A., but here in Hawaii, where the reputation of uber-friendliness and spirit of aloha precedes itself, I thought it was noticeable. Maybe having a bad day? Add to that the sign on the soda fountain saying that they charge an extra $.50 for a drink refill, I'm thinking "How cheap!", laters on that. For an island that is supposed to have tourism as it's major industry, you've really gotta stop charging your customers for a refill. What is this, the 70's? Maybe shoulda tried the Zippy's or the Teddy's Burger instead.

BEWARE - I swear they spit in your food. Went there once and the kids (yes, adolescents who have no manners or respect) working the counter were down-right rude. Their hygiene left a lot to be desired and they frankly looked like gang-bangers. I should have left then but ordered anyway. It took awhile for them to get it right and the food was slow in coming. Of course, I mentioned it and they did not appreciate it. After I ate I had it coming out both ends...hmmmm...Coincidence? BEWARE.

Need to learn some customer service skills but for the price I'll eat here again! Portions are big! Quality is avg! This is a place where you can actually get alot for a mini plate. Brown rice and toss salad available for a small fee.

I had the regular BBQ chicken. The mac was just typical mac. There's nothing bad to say about it. And the regular portion is pretty large. The chicken was a bit salty, though. The price was decent - I paid $7.60 for the regular. I'd say the quality of the food is comparable to L&L's (San Diego locations).

This place is really like the very common L&L bbq place. The service is expectedly substandard, and the food very typical. I wasn't surprised by anything either good or bad. They do give a HUGE portion, which would appeal to some people, but doesn't rank very high in my book. The redeeming quality is that it was near Hanauma bay, so it provided a nice pit stop.

Sometimes I just want to fly to Hawaii just to go here. They have this steak dish for like 6.75 that is Freaking BOMBBBBBB! The locomoco and the katsu is PRETTY good, too. Loves it! I wish they had a LocoMoco Drive Inn in the Mainland :(

I stopped by this plaza after a Makapu'u hike because I felt like sushi. He popped into Loco Moco next door to check out the menu and decided he felt like chicken katsu. Since Loco Moco had indoor seating, I changed my mind and ordered the steak plate, which was posted on their wall next to the counter. It was $8, and I was initially worried about the quality of the meat since the place was fast food for locals. It came out a few minutes later and the steak was cooked to medium rare perfection. It was flavored just right too, tasted like it was simply salt-and-peppered and grilled just right. It came over rice, with salad, and on the menu it had said salad/mac. So I chose mac of course. Well, mine came with salad and so I went to the counter, and a girl behind the counter (looked like the owner), said it doesn't come with mac (well, why did the cashier ask me if I wanted mac or salad then?), but that she would give it to me anyway. So she handed over a generous scoop of mac and I was happy. The meal was one of my last in Hawaii and I was really happy with it. The cutlet DP had was really tasty as well and a small for about $5 was more than sufficient. Will definitely be a stop again next time I'm in the Koko Marina area.

We had a good experience at Loco Moco. A few nights ago, we biked to Hawaii Kai and decided we needed to grab some food before heading back to town. Since we were grubby and had only a few dollars and change, Loco Moco sort of fit the bill. The staff who took my order were very friendly and patient as I read and reread the menu. A young guy explained the special and even suggested some items to order. When my order was done, he came outside, found me, handed me the bag of food and even joked around. Cool. I had the mini grilled ahi and bf had the steak plate (special), the total came to just under $13. The mini was a hefty small take-out box with rice, mac, cabbage, and a large thin cross section of fish. The fish was nicely seasoned, cooked through, still juicy, and fresh tasting. The steak plate was a full sized styrofoam take-out box with 2 scoops rice, lettuce salad with a slice of tomato, cabbage, and 8 big chunks of sirloin cooked medium rare. BF loved it and told me to give the place a good yelping. By the way, while I was eating outside, I noticed the same nice server cutting up an empty coffee creamer box. When he was done, he handed it to a customer who needed a neat box to carry her food. How nice!

snorkeling at Hanauma Bay at 7 in the morning sure built up an appetite ... we stopped by the first thing we saw off the road and it was Loco Moco.. this little store had indoor and ourdoor seating but with the sudden rain storm on a sunny day we opted to sit inside where they were blasting the AC the menu here is a bit intimidating.. one too many things... with all kinds of specials printed on 8x11 paper posted all around the cash register... I was so overwhelmed so i ordered the first thing my eyes rested on when the cashier asked what i wanted..... ordered the grilled spam and egg sandwich.... it was a decent size but was kinda greasy and the BF got the omelet which wasn't so bad.. the unique thing is that it had celery in it.. gives it a nice crunch.. i guess.. i would have rather gotten the spam musubi with egg at 7-11.

i don't really know what to make of this place just yet. i've had their loco moco which is alright (i'd rather eat l&l's). recently i tried their salmon with garlic butter and was left wondering "where's the garlic???" i could almost taste the butter, but barely. all i tasted was salmon so i was forced to eat most of it with shoyu. it came with tartar sauce but i really don't think salmon and tartar sauce go together. i had a bite of my brother's mushroom chicken which was waaay better then mine. i sat there the whole time wishing i ordered what he had :( the good thing about this place is that they have a slush puppy machine and i love me a refreshing blue slush puppy!

After you're done snorkeling at Hanauma grab your plate lunch here. It's your standard 2 scoops of rice, 1 scoop of mac salad + your choice of protein--so it's not so much the food I'm raving about, it's the feeling I get from this place. That *all is right with the world because I just got done with being one with the fish, layin' it out under the sun, and now I'm just gonna dry off while I wait for my food* feeling.

I would have to say that this experience was not as good as I've had in the past. We shared a mixed plate. The macaroni salad wasn't that great and the rice was a bit dry.
