I love this little place. The lady working there was super sweet and accommodating. Made a custom roll for me and it was delicious. Great customer service, great sushi and great price.

This is the first time I've been here in a long time. Maybe there are new owners, but I bought an Aloha platter from here and it was terrible. This Kozo has been around for over 20 years, and what I had today was unacceptable for a place with the word "Sushi" in it's name. The rice was absolutely horrible. Every piece we ate from this platter (except for the maki sushi) fell apart before it could reach our mouths, literally, every piece. The rice tasted old and hard. The fish itself wasn't too bad, but the craftsmanship and effort put into making this sushi was amateur at best. If you want McDonalds level sushi at Teddy's Bigger Burger price, this may be for you. Otherwise, go to a 7-11 or Wal-Mart and grab some of the Tokyo Bento sushi which is much better in my opinion. Sushi Man also makes better sushi for around the same price. Oh, by the way, we only chose here because the prices we saw online were cheaper than SushiMan, but when we got there, the prices were higher than shown online. After paying for my sushi, I asked how long it would take, and I was told a few minutes. It took at least 15 minutes. I asked for 4 sets of chopsticks, there were only 3 in the bag. Unfortunately, we didn't find this out until we got to the beach and we ended up having to share chopsticks. Totally disappointed and I'm not sure how these guys have stayed in business so long. Save your money and go elsewhere. In Hawaii Kai there's SushiMan, Hana Sushi, or you can see if 7-11 has stuff from Tokyo Bento. Costco also carries Tokyo Bento stuff.

Good service, but the quality of today's sushi was so bad! We always place take out orders here for rolls and platters...but it seems they've gone downhill!!! I'm so disappointed. The prices have gone up, while the amount of fish in the sushi has gone...well, somewhere else. It's definitely not going into the sushi...I almost couldn't see the salmon in the philly maki- if I wanted rice and cream cheese, I probably wouldn't need to go to a sushi shop to get that. (See photo) Yes, I get that it's take out sushi- but I still think a place that sells sushi for 6-7$ a roll should provide sushi that's more than just rice and cheese! Boo!!!

Mahalo for the excellent customer service this afternoon. The young man working the register told me my order would take 10-15 minutes to fill. And when I told him I was in a rush, he personally expedited my order with a smile. I was out in less than five minutes and my spicy ahi nigiri was fresh and delicious. Well done. I will return.

Hawaii Kai's Kozo Sushi needs to step their EVERYTHING up! I used to love this place...before I knew better. The older lady, is very sweet. She does give a huge effort to greet every customer and help them the best way she can and get the orders completed as fast as she can. If only her team worked the same way. All very young, very slow, very...dense and lack of common sense. Customer walks in, a greeting would be a good start. Beside that though, if the sushi were good, the lack of customer service from her team wouldn't even be a issue for me. But lately their sushi has been sloppy, and even their poke bowls seems like they've cut back on fish, and its more rice now. I tried Kahala's Kozo Sushi, and Windward City's Kozo Sushi and it seems like those places have much more selection, customer service is there, the sushi is stuffed and really good, and its been CONSISTENT! With Hawaii Kai's Kozo Sushi, its like you really don't know what you're gonna get. I wish they would step it up so I won't have to go all the way to Kahala when I want Kozo Sushi.

It was disappointing. The Philly Maki came out not looking like the picture. It barely had any salmon and no cucumber (pictured) when I asked them about this they said "I scratched cucumber out", whatever. The California roll tasted good but it was loose and sloppy.

  • Vivian F.

This was actually really gross. Two stars for not getting me sick, but that's the best thing I can say. And whoever said "at least it's Japanese owned", (1) whoever owns it makes no difference when the employees put no effort whatsoever into their work, and (2) that's super racist. Japanese/Korean/whatever makes no difference. Sushi is made from the heart, and this crap is made by apathetic teenagers, and is worse than the day old stuff at the grocery store.

    (2)
  • Paul N.

Wow, what a tiny store in Hawaii Kai Shopping Plaza, though it does serve its purpose. Took a little while for my order to be made, but Kozo Sushi is a good place to get sushi at a cheap price. Quality is okay.

    (3)
  • Sam H.

Rice to main ingredient ratio is really bad. I haven't had a sushi with so much rice compared to the main ingredients. Ever.

Seriously, not the best sushi spot ever. But Hawaii Kai residents get desperate and HATE. To leave Hawaii Kai on a week night (or at least that's how I feel) so this will always be my go to spot. Of course it's not gonna be the "freshest" fish because it's not a high scale sushi spot, but it fills my stomach and gets the job done! Their rice is really flavorful! ( I love sushi rice) and the service is always great! Cheap, fast and easy dinner for a lazy/tiring week night dinner! Always my go to: -spicy ahi bowl -dragon maki -tobiko ura maki Also a nice thing is it's ACTUALLY JAPANESE OWNED. So that's a nice thought in the back of my head~

Quick and easy stop for sushi. Cheap prices - $7.99 for one spicy ahi bowl, although don't be fooled, it's not too spicy. The ahi bowl was made in about 3 minutes which was good because I was hungry. One less star because I wish there had been more fish in the bowl (it was mostly rice). Overall, the flavor was great. I would definitely eat here again.

Just got my spicy ahi bowl from Kozo Hawaii Kai, let me start off by saying I always go here. Great service every time I go. Today was different. The young local girl working in the front was so rude. She did not greet any of her customers OR thank them. She made no eye contact whatsoever. After receiving my order I was the one to say thank you, & her response was "okay". Well I hope you're "okay" with the one star I'm giving you.

    (1)
  • Lianne S.

I gotta give 'em 5 stars because I literally go here at LEAST 3x/week and I'm always satisfied. I wish they had brown rice tho' :)

I agree with Veronica P. The food is good, pretty cheap for sushi and decent quality but the service is blah. My scenario of my visit today: I walk in on the phone, excuse myself to order. I look at the menu, not greeted by anyone, let alone the cashier who's standing there just waiting for me to order. I ordered the spicy ahi and salmon roll. He yells the order to the cooks and I try to pay with a debt card. Without even talking he just points to the cash only sign. So then I whip out my cash and leave. Now I don't want to knock the place due to the service but really, not really saying anything, SOMEONE in the place could have at least said hi or thank you. That's all.

    (2)
  • Cheri L.

Meh. Yes, it is inexpensive, but the food took quite a while (15 minutes for one roll once I was able to order, which took 15 minutes to happen in the first place), and I was successfully, aggressively line-jumped by two groups of sunburned, angry Russian tourists without the woman behind the counter batting an eyelash or asking them to wait in line. Thanks, dude. Whatever, by that point I already had time invested. The food itself was okay- not good and not bad- but it was not really worth the wait given that I'd been hoping for a quick, hassle-free take-out situation for my lunch break. This was not a *terrible* experience, but I'd be more willing to pay a couple more bucks for better-tasting food and an easier/faster experience.

This is more of a 2.5 star review. We came here after a hike up to the Koko Head Crater and this was a place to stop and get some sushi on the way to the beach. The prices are very good but the sushi is average at best. Biggest complaint is that the sushi rolls have too much rice! For that, this isn't a place I'd come back for unless I was passing by and wanted some cheap sushi on the go. In summary, cheap, average, nothing special.

My my my how I've missed my ume! And my cheap, delicious sushi to go. Why can I not find ume maki in any sushi places on the mainland? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ume First stop on the way home from the airport for 2 6-piece ume maki, 1 crab roll, 1 ume roll, and 6 piece inari. I think this cost something like $6 total. So nice to be home :).

    (5)
  • Crys A.

Decent food. I like my inari to be cone sushi style though, not small and football shaped. The cone sushi at Sekiya's used to be the best in the whole wide world but I haven't been to Sekiya's in forevuz so I don't know what's up with that anymore. Where can you get that fat-kine cone sushi, ya'all? That's what I'm looking for. Didn't find it at Kozo, though the inari was tasty enough and the other rolls were made on the spot by a cute, hard working kupuna who was making sure the food was fresh and good. Gotta like seeing that.

This is quick serve sushi take out. $9 bucks for small California roll (imitation crab), 3-piece tuna special and miso soup. In and out in 5 minutes. Caters to Japanese. Not the best, not the worst.

    (2)
  • Cat K.

This is a great place to stop for sushi before going to the beach or afterwards. Please don't expect "grade A" sushi for $2.00. This place offers just good snacks at a value price. I usually order the hand rolls - spam, tuna, california rolls. All good and easy to eat without getting your hands dirty and no utensils needed. Good value and convenient snacks!

    (3)
  • Veruca S.

Cheap eats and fast service. The seasoning could use some improvement, but hey, everyone has an off day...I've had them in the past and it's been really good...and some times, just ok. There's nothing that stands up and tap dances about this place...except it's next to Loco Moco...so if you want surf and turf..it's possible. :)

    (3)
  • Jason R.

I've walked by Kozo many times, and there are always people in line so I figured that it would be good. Verdict: Barely passable, but prices are rock-bottom. The rice is super sweet. The fish is paper thin. Tako was too chewy to eat. Honestly, the sushi at Safeway is better, IMO, but it's at least twice the price of Kozo (yes, that's how cheap it is at Kozo!). I paid under $15 for about 16 pieces of nigiri plus an ahi roll (which they forgot to put into my bag).

    (2)
  • Tawni T.

Great sushi..Got a spicy ahi bowl and dragon maki, very tasty. Good pieces of fish no stringy stuff in it. Service was alright but because you can only fit maybe 3 adults in there its pretty cramped. Wait was about 15 minutes for an order of 3 things. besides that if you have time to wait for your food this is a pretty good place for sushi.

    (4)
  • Sara T.

Can't beat Kozo for cheap, fast sushi. I love getting a 5-pc inari to munch on for only $3.50. And the salmon ikura bowl is decent for the price. Only bad thing is the California handroll, which has WAY too much mayo.

    (3)
  • Shylynn D.

    The best spicy ahi bowl.

    (5)
  • Smiley W.

Couldn't believe I could find a "unreasonable" LOW price with fairly delicious taste Japanese take-out food @my 1st day here in HAWAII, especially when a pack of 6-can diet coke costs me $2.99+ beverage fee and beverage deposit=$3.35 in a local supermarket. Got Ikura special(3 pieces) for $3.25 and a mix smaller set(9 pieces total) for only $3.20. The party platters go from as low as $14.5(30 pieces) ~$24.50(60 pieces). Nigiri is the bite size, just the way I like so I don't have to eat too much of rice. **Open 365/yr and has couple locations I think. Will go there again tomorrow for my beach munch out. BTW, they also have Spam musubi and I finally tried it, $1.5, better than I expected. :P Caps: Cash only and no substitutions on platter orders.

  • Eric F.

Spicy ahi nigiri was incredible. This tiny little place was hidden away but wasn't hiding anything when it came to flavor. We had been out swimming all day so we didn't have any cash and they didn't have a way to place a tip on the receipt from our cards so I offered to have them ring up another roll to replace the tip but they wouldn't have any of that. Really amazing people!

Good fir the Price. Not so fresh. Stick to the hand rolls

    (3)
  • Maricar M.

Dang, I never realized that a sushi place could technically be just a sushi stand. I had the shrimp tempura roll, and that was fabulous. At that price, yes it was fabulous. I also ordered the california roll, and that was just okay. Each piece was stuffed with a lot of rice, and it didn't taste as good as it looked. My husband got the lunch box, and again those pieces seemed to be all stuffed with rice to fill up the space. I don't like raw fish, but he said that the fish wasn't that fresh. Well, what do you expect from such an inexpensive meal?

    (3)
  • Leena C.

Piece of crap. Hawaii sushi is supposed to be fresh. I ordered the ahi special but it was basically rice. Where's the fish? Stingy owner means I'm never coming back.

    (1)
  • Arabiki D.

It's called kozo sushi but not affiliated with the website. So you must know their specific menu to phone order especially for sets (trays). They take extra time to roll you sushi fresh which I like but not when I'm in a rush. If you do try to order off of website menu they will act like they don't know what language you speak. Portioning is small and price is a little high. Unless it's for a party I would recommend kuru kuru or if you have to...genki.

This review is soley a review for two menu items that I tried - the salmon skin handroll and the spicy ahi nigiri. Phoned the order 5 minutes before arriving and it was ready to go!! Cheap, another plus! The handroll and nigiri were ah-ma-zing!! And to top it off, the special spicy sauce they add into the handroll and nigiri was awesome x 2!! Lastly, I thought the cute little wrapper the salmon skin roll that it came in was entertaining. Had instructions too!! Aaaand it was made in Japan!! What ya know about that?! Haha. Just saying, the wrapper itself was a delight! (: We ordered a little too much, so we refrigerated the left overs over night thinking we could bring it to the beach the next day as a snack. I was really looking forward to it too! I had stupidly left it on the dash of my friends car, exposed to the sun, while we went inside to his house to get a few items for the beach. When we came back into the car, it had been exposed to the sun for sometime and probably unsafe to eat it at that point, I was still very tempted to eat it!! I didn't, but I was pretty bummed I didnt get to eat it!!! I guess until next time. . . Spicy Ahi Nigiri and Salmon Skin roll, we will meet again! Really soon!!

Kozo Sushi is the worst sushi I have ever had. The fish was not fresh and the rolls were tiny. I would not even consider this small gross wad as sushi. When I ordered my plate, the cashier did not even know what was in the sushi and told me to look at the sample. Poor customer service with poor quality sushi created a terrible experience. I would give zero stars, but I'm required to give at least one. I would not recommend Kozo Sushi.

First of all let me say the sushi is amazing my fave- Spicy Ahi - broke dah mouth very delicious - i love it with xtrat wasabi and xtra sauce so yummy...Sushi gets 4 stars. But seriously the help needs to go!!! The cashier is angry looking doesnt say good morning or thank you or anything. (I get the feeling like they cant wait for me to leave) that is no way to run a business!! Who ever the owner is they need to get people that are seriously customer oriented.. Service is 0 star... Wait the people making the sushi 4 star, everyone else needs to go to customer service school and stop talking to each other and help there customers..

Can't beat Kozo for cheap, fast sushi. I love getting a 5-pc inari to munch on for only $3.50. And the salmon ikura bowl is decent for the price. Only bad thing is the California handroll, which has WAY too much mayo.

No photos allowed. No water for the customers. Ginger doesn't come with sushi, its extra 10 cents.

Piece of crap. Hawaii sushi is supposed to be fresh. I ordered the ahi special but it was basically rice. Where's the fish? Stingy owner means I'm never coming back.
