I don't know what's wrong with me recently...but my sweet tooth has me going into a tailspin! Why, just this past Saturday, we were at Nisshodo's Candy Store buying and sharing peanut butter and uguisu mochi treats with relatives. Today, just after eating a gyros sandwich from Mary's Mediterranean, I urged my husband to stop at Kansai Yamato Corporation located in the same Moanalua 99 complex. There were 4 ladies busily working behind the counter as an assembly line. One woman was forming the filled mochi, another was plating the mochi, while the third woman wrapped and labeled the plates and the fourth woman set the packaged products onto trays set for distribution to their other stores. I couldn't see who was making the mochi so but I assume that there were at least 2 more employees in the back. This is a pretty big operation that produces and distributes its products to 2 other of their stores, restaurants or local supermarkets. Anyway, as we approached the counter to check out their menu or products, we were greeted by the woman who was placing the packaged mochi onto trays. We inquired about the flavors of the colored mochi (pink, yellow, green and white) as well as a dish called "Sansai Okowa". She took the time to describe each item as we settled on getting a plate (4 mochi) each of mango (plain, not filled) and chunky peanut butter filled since I was trying to satisfy my sweet tooth cravings. My tastebuds have been smitten with the flavor and texture of mango mochi since having it for dessert at Ala Moana Center's Jade Dynasty Chinese restaurant. Oddly, she asked if we were tourists... hmm, maybe because we asked so many questions about some of their familiar and not so familiar products. We managed to get the 2 packages of mochi home in one piece and waited until later in the afternoon to happily savor the soft pillowy texture and subtle flavors of our new found treasures with cups of hot tea. We'll definitely be back for more when my cravings strikes again... #372

Kansai Yamato is a little mochi stand on the far end of Moanalua 99, right around the corner from the massage therapy business. You can see them preparing mochi on the tables behind the counter and cash register. There are usually 2-3 employees working but it takes a long time for someone to acknowledge you. When they finally acknowledge you, they're not friendly at all. The peanut butter mochi is scrumptious, it's like chunky peanut butter inside of the mochi with little peanut pieces. They have a pretty good variety of mochi and also offer party trays. Minus two stars for the customer service and only accepting cash.

Just passing by and saw couple of mochi, so I decided to buy some. I was very surprised after my first bite when it had peanut butter filling, it was delicious! Tried the other types and they we're all soft and have a good filling. Will definitely go back to buy some more.

My mom called me from Japan and needed me to order 100 mochi's as a thank you's (orei) for her office co-workers ready when she returned from Japan. My grandfather passed and her work allowed her to leave and take care of very important family business during golden week (which is a very busy week at the office). My mom had one special request: Find me mochi that "matches Japanese mouths(nihonjin no kuchi ni au mochi). Then she hung up and I had no way to contact her. I had so many questions like what kind, what flavor etc... but I had no contact number for her. After much research I found that the man that runs the show at Kansai Yamato is Japanese. I called him directly and asked him for a mochi that "matches Japanese mouths". He recommend daifuku and ohagi. He was sure the office full of Japanese workers would love it. Well, he was right. My mom (who is hard to satify) was satisfied. Her co-workers thought it was yummy. BTW, they do have fun, novel flavors as well I hope to try them all!

Why is their mochi where the make it, more expensive than the store bought ones! Not happy!

To preface the remainder of the review, I absolutely LOVE their products. I've gotten to know their brand from local shops and supermarkets. This was about a poor customer service experience. I stopped by their location in Mapunapuna hoping to find some of their delicious dango in bulk. I'm accustomed to buying many of their products from other stores, and figured that it would be most economical to satiate my desires for quality japanese confectionaries by contacting the manufacturer directly. Alas, while their work is excellent, only one out of the three employees bothered to acknowledge my presence when I was waiting in front of their register trying to get someone's attention. The attendant treated me as though I were a nuisance. "What do you want?" Very brusque and impatient. While I will quite likely continue to buy their products, I doubt that I'll do it from their storefront.

Harlan S's review below is exactly what I experienced about a year later. This locale may save the need to go to Ala Moana Shopping Center but gets you nothing else, especially in regards to price or quality and definitely not in service. Not sure why they don't just put a wall up around the production area and be done with it.
