This was my first time here. Even though this place has been here for a while in Kalihi, I never knew about it until passing through School Street looking for a quick bite to eat. It's located by Freedom Gas Station in the same area. It really is a hole in the wall place for huge portions, reasonable prices and a quick bite to eat. There were so many food choices to choose from we ended up getting the pork cutlet and kim chee fried rice to take out. Service was pretty quick and efficient. There's a few tables for customers to dine in as well. If you're on a budget, this is one of the places to go to for cheap eats and will definitely fill you up.

I've been coming here since they opened which to me is so long ago I can't even remember when they did open. Living 2 minutes away is the main reason, but the ono grinds, affordable prices, and huge portions is why it's my favorite plate lunch place till this day! A hole in the wall kinda joint. Annie and her husband are the hardest working people I know! They are always there, open to close, all day every damn day! The hamburger steak is my favorite! It's all about the gravy baby and I just loooove their brown gravy! Their chicken katsu is my second favorite. Love their fried rice, burgers, fries, garlic chicken, mahi mahi, BBQ chicken, and the list goes on! I've tried a lot of items on their menu, not all, but a damn lot! The only thing I've had that I can say isn't all that is the deep fried shrimp. There is waaay too much breading for my liking. Everything else though, is WINNAHS!!! And now I'm hungry ^_^

Ok, so when the hubby and I are craving to pig out and get buffet full in the privacy of our own home, we like to go to this place for takeout. Now, quality wise, I would give this place about 3 stars, but as for the quantity... it made me feel generous enough to add on that extra star. HUGE fan of the garlic fried chicken... now, when you order it, you must make sure you add the word "Fried" into your sentence. They do have "garlic chicken" which obviously is missing all that is great and good of garlic chicken... the FRIED PART! I 've made this mistake before and was very sad. Another great plate is their Mix Plate ($7.25). A WHOLE lotta rice, a scoop of mac salad, hamburger steak, teriyaki beef, swimming in your choice of beef curry or beef stew. You'll feel a little pull in your bicep as you carry the plate to your car.

The food is fast, and really reasonably priced. Enjoy their chicken kasu, mochico chicken, and their BBQ chicken.

Ordering plate lunches from this place since it first opened. The garlic chicken has been my regular order. The chicken katsu is popular and I like getting the garlic chicken and garlic shrimp combo too. Nice and cool area to eat when you can find the time to just enjoy your plate lunch without being bothered.

Little "hole in the wall" drive inn...LOVE IT!!! Perfect place-KALIHI with all the BIG braddahs around. The only place that my boyfriend will eat the Orange Chicken from. They serve alot-so when we order the Orange Chicken/Fried Rice-there is enough food for both of us with enough for leftover the next day... Good local food...Try it!!!

Always fast service & reasonable prices & best of all awesome food! I have been a loyal customer since my first order!

I think they are one the best bbq shops on Oahu. They have raised their prices over the years but they still give a very generous amount of food. They are always willing to make substitutes and to please their customers. They are incredibly fast also. I recommend the katsu and the loco moco!

Be prepared to eat lots and lots of food for a cheap price. 10 bucks goes a long way here. I highly insist on trying the garlic shrimp. It's a little hard to eat but it's amazing! The KATSU chicken is good, but had a layer of fat on every piece, which I was not a fan of but still good once you get past that. My boyfriend tried the BBQ mix plate with came with short ribs, BBQ chicken and teriyaki steak which were all good. I loved the Mac salad! Good local spot.

I ordered chicken katsu curry and ended up getting chicken katsu with beef stew. Not what I wanted and it was dissappointing. Mac salad was more like mayo salad with noodles but thats pretty typical. I also found a piece of fried shimp shell in the bottom of the plate when I dug to get rice. Lost my appetite and put it on my list of not to eat again which is a bummer considering its within walking distance from my house. Boyfriend got the Chicken Katsu and said it was all right but nothing special...said he'd rather go Waikamilo Drive Inn.

I was putting mustard on my burger but did realize that it was hot mustard for Chinese food and now my burger is ruined and I said it out loud for the workers to hear and the didn't reimburse me for miss labeling the mustard bottle that it has hot mustard for Chinese on it, very disappointed I come here all the time. Very bad, me being the bigger man I ordered another one cuz I was hungry. Not goin here again. Plus when I was looking at the menu and finally ordered, the owner who was cooking my food says to the cashier girl "why he take so long"? How fucking rude!!!

I love KalihiBBQ, they are one of the best plate lunch places in Kalihi. Because we are always going there for my grandma because she likes to eat their beef stew, they know us very well. Outing in the phone order for our order is always the best thing todo. So by the time we get there are food is ready to take home. They know us very well because I swear we visit them about 5-6x in one month, lol. They are very friendly to their customers, so generous as well. They always know when we are coming because we always order the same thing, mini beef stew all rice Their double bbq cheeseburger is solo yummy, and with fries. And they live pretty quickly as well, but by hey can be busy at times as well. The parking lot is that big so sometimes it could be hard to find parking. But other than that'd they are awesome !

Only recently have started patronizing them after being away from the area for awhile. So far everything I've had has been above average and the portion size is generous and the prices reasonable. Don't have a fav item yet-still working my way through the menu!

I absolutley love Kalihi Bar-B-Q. They're located right next to Freedom Gas Station on Gulick & School St. It's right up the road from my house so if we ever feel the urge to grab a plate lunch, it's always our first choice. Annie & her husband are the owners, and they're really nice. Not only the convenience is the reason why we always come here, but their portions are SO generous! Sometimes when we order a chicken katsu plate, it's hard to close with the amount that they give us! Each time we have a pot luck party, this is also another go-to place cause for a small pan of katsu, they give a whole lot and my relatives eat A LOT. Their shrimp fried rice are another one of my favorites here. As long as Kalihi Bar-B-Q is still in business, I will always be a customer of theirs!

Quick service, food served hot and in big portions. You cannot go wrong when eating here! Also customer service is better than L&L in my opinion.

I'm going to say what nobody else has the guts to: this is what we call the 'dirty kitchen'. The food is excellent!! The Decor is minus ten. Now that we've got that out-of-the-way... Their food is excellent. The garlic shrimp is so good and so garlicky, that I eat the shrimp shells and all! WHOO!! My husband says the barbecue chicken is also good. And that's a compliment because my husband's a good cook & hard to please. If they painted the place and put in new tables it would be world-class. As it is, it's just plain wonderful. Go there. Now.

  • Jay L.

I know there's a lot of these "L&L" like places out there, but this place is different. Doesn't look like much on the outside or inside for that matter, but the food is excellent! Chicken Katsu is my wife's favorite. Generous portions of chicken and the sauce....the sauce is the best!!! I think the make their own concoction or something lol! Char Siu Fried rice is good too. Sometimes when we order it you can barely close the plate. Fried rice is enough for 3 of us! Kalbi is also one of our favorites. Sometimes we'll get like 5 pieces of the 3-bone Kalbi. Taste great and definitely beats out some of the other plate lunch places. Lots of other stuff to try. The biggest plus is the price. CHEAP EATS!! Can't beat that for a quick dinner if you're lazy too cook. Two plates will feed a family of 4! Be like us, cook rice at home and get the plates no rice hahahaha!!!

A little hole in the wall, located next to a gas station convenience store on the corner of School Street and Gulick Avenue. Parking is a little scarce, especially during peak times. The food was actually quite good. For a small place; seemed like a 2 person operation, they pump the food out pretty quick! The chicken Katsu was very good, especially the sauce. Only $6.99 for a huge order. Extra Katsu sauce costs $.67 cents. Barbecue combo plate was $8.99 and stacked with teriyaki goodness! Also ordered the mini shoyu chicken plate for $6.00 and oxtail soup for $12.00. All was very tasty and worth the short wait. I actually liked finding this place, as I was getting tired of the same drive-ins and food choices when craving plate lunches. Service was quick and also friendly. Only about 7 tables inside a small sized room, but good enough to dine and dash. Try it, you may like it!

Omg .I love this place good food good price. There cheeseburger itself is awesome and lots of french fries...yummmy. but most of all the servings are huuiuugggge! Been going here for years ever since I was a youngin. Better than LnL to me.yhey do phone orders . Small or big orders. Love the owners...mom n pops own.

  • Roman M.

The prices are very resonable, and the Chicken Katsu is good. However... The food in my opinion has took a turn for the worse. ( main reason for the 3 stars ) The food seems to be getting greasier and way to much mayo in the mac salad. Yes they give you generous portions, but how much of that is left over grease from the kitchen. The lady at the counter is very polite when you order, and you can tell the cook knows his stuff. I hope they work on quality control. There food is paying the price.

Kalihi BBQ is the place to go for a quick, good size portion and good prices if you craving local style plate lunches, they are so ONO (delicious) and glad it's 5 minutes away from home. It's a must for anyone craving for BBQ/local plate lunch and lazy for cook. The garlic shrimp is what I always go back for since I don't live on the North shore side this is the next best place. Go check them out good food good prices.

  • Reta V.

So glad this place is right up the road from my house. They are very generous with their portions, and are always friendly. They greet every customer with a warm smile, and are very quick with the orders. Parking however is limited, so I recommend you phone in your order.

For a diner/drive inn...its really good! The prices are cheaper than the popular Loco Moco's and L&L's! The portion size of the food is ridiculous. If a plate lunch is that big, its not meant for one person. You can buy one plate lunch and share it between two people. $6.50 for a meal for 2 people? My kind of numbers! This is a place to check out for sure. Its located in Kalihi and the building is newly painted. Its attached to a gas station convenience store so look out for it because it can be easily missed if youre not looking for it. I took a picture of the storefront during the day because the picture shown is a night photo. Try the BBQ Chicken with Garlic Shrimp!

Pretty damn good. It's your basic Hawaiian mixed plate. I got the garlic shrimp and bbq chicken special for $7.99. Decent deal for that. Good portion. Chicken done quite well. Mac salad was typically overly covered in mayonaise, which I don't like. The shrimp, though good in taste, were covered in garlic, breaded goodness, but UNPEALED. Why would they go to the trouble of covering them with so much flavor, which I then have to peel off? Weird. Really 3.5 stars. I would try it. The menu looks very good, and I've only been there once.

I've been going here ever since it opened when they were known as the cheapest chicken katsu plate on Oahu and featured on Cheap Eats with Sam Choy and Lyle Galdera back in the day. If i recall the price was $4.50 or $4.75. For about 5 bucks you got a huge piece of boneless chicken katsu chopped up with 2 scoops of rice and mac salad with their homemade katsu sauce blend they make from scratch and not the typical Worcestershire base sauce. A nice sweet almost not ketchup type taste and tang. The husband and wife team/owners Kwok and Annie are so nice. The place has been worned down over the years with faded menu signage and old tables and chairs. Chinese hanging lanterns and the picture of them with Sam and Lyle for the TV segment that launched them is still on the wall. Their BBQ mix plate is massive and they always give you your money's worth. The prices have gone up but their best sellers are the chix katsu, hamburger steak, and katsu fried shrimp mix plate that they post on their glass window. It's going for $7.99 at the time of this writing. I always buy takeout from them. If you like boneless chicken plate with gravy try their chicken cutlet plate. I swear it has crack in it!! LOL A few of my buddies tried it at work and we got the Hawaiian stroke and had wake up by walking around our building or be caught dozing off on the job!! hehehe :) I highly recommend this place if you are not hard to please but want the best bang for your buck for some good local style hawaiian plate lunches!! L&L is good but your can buy more here!! :D btw while waiting for your plates being cooked, order a side of old fashion jumbo crinkled french fries. Winnahz so ono driving grinding those!! :)

I've been coming here for as long as I can remember, considering my grandparents live less than 1 minute away. So I guess you could call me a regular. It's on the corner of School Street and Gulick Avenue. I keep coming back here because their food is overall pretty good. Price is on the cheap side and their portions are huge. They have a wide selection to choose from (plate lunch style) It's not the cleanest place you'll find but it's a lot cleaner than how it was before. They have a picture on the wall with Local Chef, Sam Choy... I don't know if that's saying anything but that picture has been up for years. Parking is limited to about 5 stalls. It's right next to a gas station (actually in the same structure) called Freedom Gasoline with a Fastop. Seating is also limited. It's a small place which could probably seat around 20 people total. Their hours vary, call to find out. On some nights I know they close around 9:45-10:00pm I'll just give you a list of my favorites with a short description: Chicken Katsu: They pack the plate to the point where you have a hard time closing it properly. I have a hard time finishing this. Downside is When you get to the end, you start to get that greasy texture in your mouth. But good nonetheless. Loco Moco: They bed the whole takeout plate with rice and a scoop of mac salad with 3-4 hamburger patties on top with 2 eggs smothered in gravy. Ono! BBQ Chicken: 3 pieces of perfectly cooked chicken with rice and mac salad Garlic Fried Chicken: This is also really tasty. Make sure you add in the "FRIED" part because they do have another plate that is just Garlic Chicken. They also have Chicken Katsu Curry, same as above but smothered in curry. Final comments: Whatever you're in the mood for they probably got it in terms of plate lunches. They may not be the best quality wise but overall decent food with big portions at a small price. Overall Rating: "EXCELLENT" Will continue to come back here with a hungry appetite.

Time to switch it up, I guess. Been doing the Subway / Starbucks / McDonald's, etc deal for way too long and I never got back to my local fast food roots till recently when I needed a temporary change to shake things up. Enter the Kalihi Bar-B-Q Drive Inn. Nothing like doing a search on the ol Yelp app to see what looks good nearby and go there. Kalihi Bar-B-Q Drive Inn is more or less like your typical L&L Hawaiian BBQ restaurant, with classic comfort food choices and reasonable prices to fill you up without emptying your wallet. Thanks to the Yelp reviews that persuaded me to go here rather than getting my Pho on in Chinatown. Located just across Kalihi Street on North School Street, I ventured outside my comfort zone of Kamehameha Shopping Center for a quick bite to eat and that was cool. Rarely do I do that, but it was something that my inner Yelper did and it was good. I arrived here on a nice Wednesday with a co-worker, who also wanted something, so I caught a ride with him and it was a good experience. Kalihi Bar-B-Q Drive Inn had basicaly everything you've ever wanted. You can forget about going to Zippy's or L&L Hawaiian BBQ anymore, since this place is practically amazing! The service is great and fast. You don't have to wait no longer than 15 minutes for your food. They have tables here, but there's not much space, so we just opted for take out and we brought it back to the office to eat. Not much in the way of parking spaces too, so I just hopped out and ordered for my co-worker and I. Quick and expedient, just like how I like it, especially when there's so much crapola to do at the office. For the first time out, I ordered the BBQ chicken with garlic shrimp combo. It was pretty good. They give substantially more than what I thought and the prices were fair to competitive. Like anywhere, 2 scoops of white rice with a scoop of macaroni salad, unless you tell them you want all rice. Not sure if they charge extra for that, but it doesn't hurt to ask. They do take credit cards, so that's a major plus in my book! If you are like me, routes #2 and #1L rip through this joint, so you can catch the bus here, if you don't have a car to call your own - even if temporarily. Honestly, I would come here everyday, if my wallet and my stomach can handle such temptations. What a great find and will be back whenever I can. The service was good and the food is excellent. Support local! B+

friendly staff, amazing prices, and the best chicken katsu on all of O'ahu! i try to hit them up as often as i can before work. i only get their chicken katsu (my favorite) since i have never found another place that makes it as good as they do.

  • Sally C.

The prices are very reasonable and the portions they give are just right. There are many items both on the menu board and on the signs posted outside to choose from depending on what you feel like eating. Their barbecue chicken with garlic shrimp is really tasty. I get it whenever possible.

My friend is a regular here, so he made sure we stopped by during our trip. After going to the beach and sightseeing we decided to hit up this place. It's a small restaurant that serves really good Hawaiian food! Their chicken katsu is really good and it was only $5.75! They give you a huge amount of katsu over rice, and their mac salad was on point! I also tried one of their cheeseburgers here and it was really good too! if you are looking for inexpensive and good Hawaiian food then this is definitely the spot for you!

I was introduced to this place about 2 years ago...and have been coming back ever since. The price for the quality of food is the main reason for my frequent visits here. I almost always get the chicken katsu plate because it's always on special...2 years ago when I first started eating here it was about $4.75 and they STACKED the chicken katsu! Now it's about $5.25 and they still stack the katsu...even when I'm super hungry, I can't finish off the plate. And if I do I regret doing so because I get so full that I can't move. Literally if I move I would have a stomach ache. But overall the food is great, the service is fast and the location is perfect right near the on ramp for the freeway. Oh and order the side order of french fries. Crinkle cut and fried to perfection just how I like it, and if you eat it right there it's super hot and delicious!...

This is an update. Months ago I gave them 2 stars and didn't return until tonight. It is very close to my house and didn't feel like driving far to eat. I'm sooooooo glad I gave Kalihi Bar-B-Q Drive-Inn another chance. They have New York Steak and garlic shrimp for $10.95 plus all kinds of other great specials. It was amazing and so is that price. I will be coming back often!! Beef and broccoli is fantastic.

  • Darin H.

Hamburger steak was good, gravy and rice had good flavor. Mac salad had a little too much mayo. I'd go back when I'm in the area.

garlic shrimp and/or salt and pepper shrimp is good. bbq chicken and beef stew also good. meat in the beef stew is usually always soft enough to cut with a fork.

the location isnt that bad here. right next to the freedom gas station by gulick so you cant miss it. their gralic chicken is to die for but its really oily and totally unhealthy for you. id say after eating a plate including a mini of the garlic chicken you have this nasty feeling of regret but it taste so freaking good! haha. right when you walk in theres a weird funky smell like they havent been keeping up with the cleaning. small place for seating up to like, 10 peeps maybe? price is cheap tho! i spent $5 for a mini and was completly satisfied of what i got.
