Who doesn't love a good loco moco?? Well, this place doesn't have loco mocos on the menu, but they do have a killer hamburger steak plate to which you may add (for an additional fee) egg(s) to. Make sure you ask for the HAMBURGER steak plate and not the steak plate, bc if you ask for the latter, you will get straight up steak cut up into pieces with a bunch of brown gravy. Hey, you may be into the steak with gravy... But when I'm craving a loco moco, I want a loco moco (not steak with gravy). Bottom line - make sure you're clear on what you're ordering. Now - for the dish on the gravy: Brown, succulent gravy. Not too salty. Not too thin or viscous either. It's the perfect consistency that sticks just how it's supposed to. I don't know how they do it or what they do to make it so dang tasty, but it's freakin' delicious. I seriously eat everything on my plate because of this gravy -- yes, every single grain of rice -- and only because of this gravy. (The egg(s) helps, too.) VERDICT Hamburger steak plate + egg(s) all the way. Worth the trip. Worth the tax on cholesterol. Worth the guilt trip. Worth it, worth it, worth it.

I had the steak plate and the eggplant sandwich. I love steak, but this steak was lacking something. The steak did come with gravy, but it didn't match. The steak was a little overdone and it could use some seasoning, I think a little salt and pepper would have been good. The sandwich, i was thinking where's the eggplant because the eggplant was cut so thin (and the bread was so thick and big) . .with the breading one piece of eggplant was a little thicker than two pringles chips. I ate the sandwich and it was GOOD (I was so surprised) could have used a little more sauce, but it was good. . I would definitely eat that again. The French fries has this yellow seasoning that gives it a little tang. . At first I liked it, but after eating quite a few I didn't care for it.

The eggplant parmesan sandwich was incredibly good. Good bread, tasty eggplant parmesan, and tasty (but not quite enough) marinara sauce. The french fries were great with just the right amount of salt and some other seasoning that I couldn't quite place. The sandwiches are not dirt cheap (like their plates are) but are definitely well worth the reasonable price.

They should totally open two hours more daily because there seems to be a mad rush that has a feeling like these are spill over people from other restaurants that are closed or packed. The young guy at the counter is pretty swift he remembers who ordered what and goes whizzing buy to deliver to their table while taking orders making orders and cleaning up. Out of all of the places to eat this place is a gem as far as I'm concerned. They're reasonable and very unassuming. I always forget they are here but I would come here more often if they changed the hours because I am habitually late.

Bar vibe upon entering even though no alcohol. Trying the yelp recommended hamburger plates. Can't believe it's $6.21 each! Hope I don't get what I paid for. Ordered one for my mom and me. Taking a little while which I don't mind if it's being cooked fresh. Regulars who they know seem to be coming in for their fixes. Pastramis. Hmmm. Still waiting. Saw cook leave the kitchen for a sec. The pastrami people got their orders already even if came in after me. I guess that's a tip. I think they would do a lot better if the place was brighter. The taste test. Great! Definitely worth more than the price! Comes with LOTS of grilled onions which I love. Mom seems to be enjoying it too. She said it's good. Definitely the place to go if you're craving a good hamburger plate but you're short on cash.

The best BBQ bacon cheese burger I've had. Meat cook just right and the bun was very fresh. Will be eating there again very soon.

This is one of my favorite take-out places. Everything I have tried has been good and the prices are reasonable. My favorite is the salad with grilled chicken. All the ingredients are always fresh and tasty and the portions are large. The burgers are just as good as some of the higher-priced places around town but the fries are just average.

My GF and I love this place and it's our go to for cheat days. The bacon avocado burger is absolutely delicious and one of the best I've had on island. The buns they use are amazing. The fries are generous and we buy one between us as its all very filling. Great people run this place too and that's make a big difference.

So much food for so cheap! I got the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger with fries. The fries are separate price, but it comes with a lot for $2. The burgers are freaken big and the bread is to die for! SOOO ONO! Will be back again! Air Conditioned. Free parking. Bathroom in the same building. Affordable prices. Never that crowded. Loved the ambiance.

There's a pretty unknown eatery for those outside of Manoa! I wonder why since it's clean, tasty and cheap, too! This little known spot is called... ISLAND SUB & BURGER! No, it has nothing to do with the infamous "Yellow Submarine", and yes, there's more than just one "Burger" here, but what this spot offers is delicious sandwiches (so I heard), burgers and plate lunch specials, too! On my first visit here, mind you I'm a health nut, and usually headed to rabbit food places like "Red Ginger", "Andy's", and "Morning Glass"... But today, I just wanted something fast, cheap & filling. Good would be a bonus, too! ISLAND SUB & BURGER! It's located in Manoa Marketplace, between "Fendu" & "Kay's Crack Seed". It's been here for at least 4-5 years now, replacing a very popular sandwich shop, but for some reason I'm always headed somewhere else and always craving something else. 'Cause remember I'm a rabbit! Today, was the day I actually walked-in, ordered and ate! After a morning meeting with my lovely BFF over some coffee, I am famished and it's now lunch hour, I'm now back in my hood and for some odd reason I recall the lunch plates here are $6.21! Mind you, I never walked into this place before, but I'm a numbers guy and that $6.21 resonated in me. "$6.21, $6.21, $6.21" glowing in my analytical head! After being greeted, I see the choices for the $6.21 plates. About 6 choices, from Pork Chops to Shoyu Chicken, Steak to Curry, and Hamburger Steak to Nathan's Chili Dog! Today the Hamburger Steak is calling me! I place my order and wait and wait and wait! Ugggh! Yes, I waited a good 20-minutes for it! You can look at it negatively or positively - I chose being positive - waiting 20 minutes means it's cooked fresh and not scooped, right?! When it was finally ready it was actually brought up to me rather them shouting that it was ready. Nice touch for a semi-fast food place! The Hamburger Steak did not disappoint! It was angus beef, lightly seasoned and with a nice mushroom gravy & onions over it. It came with two scoops of rice (I only needed one) and in-house Mac-salad. The burger was thin, but cooked just right and I like that it was not overly salted like some places! To me it was worth every penny of the $6.21! In fact, I'll pay $6.22 for it! Well, with tax it was exactly $6.50! Good deal, indeed! So yes, I definitely recommend... ISLAND SUB & BURGER! A casual sandwich/burger/plate lunch spot that not many outside of Manoa knows about. Just wish they cooked faster tho, ha! Nevertheless, it passed my test for cheap & good eats! Oh yeah, maybe they should change the signage to "ISLAND SUB(S) & BURGER(S)", y'know since they do have more than one each! Oh btw, it has nothing to do with "The Beatles" - "Yellow Submarine"... Just make sure you have $6.21 + .29 in your pocket! Just saying! OVERALL GRADE 4.0-STARS! (SOLID!) LIVE ALOHA... YELP REVIEW #422

I ordered the corned beef reuben, the meetball penne pasta and a small french fry. The food was so delicious and the reuben was a big sandwhich. When I finished it I could barely eat any of the French fries. The pasta was good as well, though I wish there was an option to have meat sauce instead of meatballs.

Hamburger had good intensions...but was super super dry. Too bad because the bun was decent and the veggies were fresh. I felt jipped on the on onion rings...7 pieces for $2.50. Fries were subpar. I would've been happy to wait the 20 minutes if the food was good. 2 stars because the burger would've been good if it hadn't been overlooked so badly.

Very Ono cheese burger! My brother is a regular customer. He raved how good the burger was here. I tried and I think the burger is yummy. I like the veggies and sauce on the burger. One of my favorite stops in manoa. The onion rings is good too. I foresee hiking up manoa falls and stopping by here afterwards :). Another good combo is trying the French desserts next door.

Came here for the first time because my work wanted to order out. Hmmm, not sure how to write this review because my experience was kind of all over the place and since I've only been here once I'm thinking that it would get better but eh, here goes: Btw, I had the eggplant parmesan sandwich. The eggplant was really good, crispy and moist, but the bun/bread to eggplant ratio was off to me coz I had about a quarter inch of eggplant to almost 2" of bread. And the marinara was straight from jar variety (what was I expecting for the price?) so it wasn't "bad" but I guess it corresponds to the price. In hind sight, I should have gotten a meat sandwich coz my co-workers pastrami's and Reuben's looked hella good and it was the same price. Pros: -Take over the phones orders and pick up was somewhat easy; I ordered day before -Food was freshly prepared and tasty. -Service was quick, and had my order on time, more or less -Easy to find, lots of parking (in the Manoa Place Marketplace near Longs Drugs) -It's got an easy neighborhood joint feel. Casual, unpretentious but lovingly lived in. Cons: -They don't have paper or online menus to offer. I called twice and they just offer that and sounds like they won't offer it (ESL translations I believe) so you NEED to know what you're ordering before you call. I'll try to post a menu here.. -They don't know how to process a credit card payment over the phone

Not bad for the price. My fav is the fried eggplant sandwich with marinara dip. The cole slaw was also good the first time I ordered it, the next time it was drowned in black pepper, so much so, that it was all you could taste. I also tried the hamburger steak plate. Hamburger was a little tough, mac salad had no flavor, & onions had a bite. Gravy was good though. Located in Manoa Marketplace, around the corner from Long's Drugs.

Chicken Caesar salad. The best, hands down. Huge portions, completely reasonable prices. So luck to live in manoa! Never tried anything else, probably because I am so satisfied ordering just a salad that I need not venture across their menu. I'm more than sure that everything else is just as great.

Great price! This was my first time seeing this place and wanted to try it out. Service wasn't very good. Owner(I believe it was the owner) seems unhappy to serve us. The lighting is so dark it seems like I'm at a bar without alcohol. Kinda of a mood killer with the service and dim lighting. Might come again eventually.

My boyfriend and I enjoy this place very much. Personally, I think it's under-rated. The couple that runs this place are adorable and so nice. Their sandwiches are HUGE and their burgers are seasoned well! In the middle of Manoa there's no other place to get subs and burgers that won't kill you instantly (McDonalds). I like their simple penne pasta too. The portions are big for a small girl like me, thank god I have my boyfriend who can eat my leftovers. If you haven't been here, you definitely have to try their bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, and pastrami sub. I love it. I haven't tried their plate lunches yet, but I definitely plan to!

Easy parking since its in the Manoa Marketplace. Self-seating. Walk up to counter and order. I got the corned beef reuben with a side of onion rings and my hubby got shoyu chicken plate with rice. The Reuben Sandwich: toasted marble rye bread, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and 1000 island dressing. The flavors were similar to what I remember my Grandma making reuben's when I was a child. However, the quality of meet failed as it was thinly sliced yet still so fatty and chewy. Each bite had me playing a slight tug-o-war with the sandwich trying to prevent all of it from falling out. The onion rings were a guilty pleasure, but three were fried within eachother and so the batter was still raw. Can't eat raw batter when your pregnant. The Shoyu Chicken plate: my husband always has to have rice. He just won't ever settle for a sandwich even when we go to a deli. We can make better shoyu chicken, but at least it carved his hunger. No veggies or mac salad came with this plain and ordinary plate. Two scoops rice. Just onions tossed along with the chopped chicken thigh pieces. Bottom Line: best to come here and try a different sandwich/sub/burger. Get a plate lunch from the multiple Korean takeout spots nearby. I'm on a quest to find the perfect reuben sandwich or just make my own. On the upside, quick service and good prices ($10 and below). It's one of those places you grab a quick bite to eat while you do your errands around Manoa.

Holy Moly can you say a great value for your money!? First of all, I knew it was gonna be a little bit of a wait because there is literally only one person working (I'm assuming he's the owner) so he's taking orders, making them, and delivering them. However, I didn't wait that long. Maybe about 10 min at the most. When I got home I was amazed at how big the burger was and how much fries came with a small size. I got the BBQ bacon cheese burger. It has crispy bacon, onion rings, cheese, a burger & BBQ sauce. It was really good! The bun that it is served on is also very delicious. Some kind of sweet bread bin maybe? I'm not sure. For $7 or $8, you can't go wrong. The small fries for $1.50 was huge and very satisfying. I would recommend this place and would gladly choose it over the McDonald's that's just across the parking lot.

Like many others, I have really mixed feelings on this place. We got the Avocado Bacon Chicken Burger and the Chili Dog Rice Plate, with 2 sides of Mac Salad and a large drink. The Chili Plate was off the hook! Extremely good. The ABCB was pretty good, but we both agreed the Chili Plate was better. The Mac Salad was awful. The most bland either of us have ever had. The soda from the fountain was very watered down. We had to wait quite some time to get our food, and the guy who took our order, cooked the food, then served it to us was pretty unfriendly. I think we'll give it another try. The price was right, so maybe getting different sides will make all the difference.

Great value and generous portions. The hamburger steak plate, Italian sausage penne pasta, burgers and fries all are tasty and big! The pastrami reuben is delicious, but seems a little of a smaller portion compared to their other items. I've been there when they've run out of the rye bread - which is the yummiest bread for their sandwiches. It's not "fast" food, but I like my food freshly cooked.

    (5)
  • Chad A.

So this place is incredibly fast, fresh and tasty. My wife and I have enjoyed the Ruben, chicken philly, and the Cuban. While they all were very tasty, and reasonably priced, they weren't as packed full of meat and cheese as a real NY deli would be which is the only reason I can't give it 5 stars.

Island burger has a good variety of sandwiches and burgers to choose from. The bread is also pretty fresh, which is great!! I've tried the cheeseburger and chicken Caesar salad. Both of these were great especially the salad. The presentation of the food is also good!! I would recommend trying this place at least once. You won't be disappointed!

  • Scott I.

Onion rings and sandwiches are great. Went the other day and found out that you can't get a side of onion rings without a sandwich. Waited in line and found out when I tried to order. It's not written on the menu on the wall, just the menu on the counter where you order. Boo! Left totally annoyed.

Onion rings - 5 stars, best onion rings ever!! Steak plate - 0 stars. For $5.95 my expectations weren't high. But I wouldn't have eaten it for free. I ordered med, but it overcooked past well done, was super tough and dry. Service - 4 stars. I didn't ask for my money back but the owner told the cashier to refund me Overall 3 stars because they won't sell the onion rings by itself anymore!!!!

  • Kelly M.

Good hamburger steak at $5.95 plus $0.50 for an egg to make it a loco moco. BF would not order the pastrami Rueben again. Meat was gristle-y. But he liked the way the meat was blended with the Thousand Island dressing and sauerkraut, not just layer on. Will try again and go for one of the burgers. Oct 31 Yelp Challenge: #27/31

Despite not having to try all the restaurants Manoa Shopping Center has to offer(for now), this is my favorite eatery so far. I am a big fan of their Mushroom/Swiss Burger. And, contrast to some of the reviewers before me, fortunately, I have never had the displeasure of being served a raw burger or mushrooms for that matter. Maybe their cooks change from noon to nighttime I'm not sure? Other than that, my second item that I tend to order is the chili frank plate which is delicious. I like the texture of their chili accompanied by the melted cheese disseminating throughout. Their service tends to fluctuate though. It depends who is on the cashier, sometimes it's a disgruntled young woman and other times it's the owner(s) of the establishment. The latter tends to display better customer service. Another important aspect that is inconsistent is their fries. Sometimes I receive wonderful, hot, seasoned fries and other times I receive oily, semi-hot, unseasoned fries. Maybe it's the luck of the draw, but I wish they would be more consistent and focus on the details. *Lots of parking *Decent prices *Good ambiance

Really good variety of menu items from burgers/hot dogs/plate lunches. All the lunch specials were a deal and compared to the crappy manoa BBQ next door u definitely get a lot more bang for your buck. In fact the $5.95 loco moco lunch special was twice the size. Only gripe is the first two lunch specials were sold out but were still listed on the board. Also had burgers from here and they rank tight up there with la tour cafe burgers. Fair pricing and overall legit place.

After seeing the place the week before, I went there on a Saturday morning about 1030 ish with my teenage son to check it out. Lots of sub sandwiches and some deli style sandwiches on the menu; most of them less than $10 (whole sandwich) or $6-$7 for half a sandwich. Decided upon the pastrami with everything on top along with an order of fries ...for a grand total of a little over $13. I was pleased with the sandwich - had to wait a bit, maybe 10-12 minutes, but everything was made fresh, the bread nicely toasted with pretty generous portions of pastrami, along with lettuce, tomatoes, olives, onions, cheese and mustard sauce. The sandwich came in 2 baskets and the 1/2 a sandwich filled me up! My son too, who usually eats more than me, it was enough for him. The quantity of fries was pretty generous, and appeared to have been cooked right after I placed the order, so they were hot and the smaller pieces were crispy. Maybe if there was a little bit more salt on it, they would have been perfect! Five stars for the sandwich and 3 stars for the fries. But all in all, a good experience and I wouldn't mind going there a second time to try other things. Workers and owner seem to be very nice people!

Great sandwich place in Manoa! Casual atmosphere and tasty, well seasoned food. I had the pastrami Reuben. It was succulent and probably the best rueben I have had on Oahu. I also had the French fries. They were well seasoned and had a citrus zest which sent them over the top with awesome.

It would be unfair to judge this sub and artisan sandwich shop against the previously owned Bonacasa's. Located in Manoa Marketplace, this is a nice stop over for anyone near town for a good sandwich. My favorite is the footlong cuban sandwich- roast pork, ham, swiss, pickles, mustard, all on a pressed french piece of bread. This has always been my go-to sandwich and very few places in Hawaii craft such a sandwich much less make one this good. yelp.com/biz_photos/xNtO… The onion rings are also very good. I've had the pastrami on marbled rye and burgers as well. All choices are satisfying and well made. I would definitely recommend Island Sub and Burger to a hungry college student.

  • Dianne H.

I love the Pastrami Reuben here!! I was at the Manoa Laundry Mat and found this place. The place is a little small but they have a great menu of sandwiches, subs, burgers, and salads. I also had the 1lb swiss and mushroom burger here which was HUGE! It was pretty good, but somehow felt like it was missing a little bit of flavor. Pretty decent prices. About $8-10 a sandwich (fries & drink NOT included) You can get a side of fries or onion rings for $3-$6. Drinks are about $2.50 or so and $0.75 for refills. You can also pay for extra meat on your sandwich. I believe they take credit cards.

If I could, I would give this establishment no stars. Rude and disappointing! Sign on door says open until 7:30pm on Saturday nights. We arrived at 7:10pm and the Asian male worker just shook his head and said they were closed. No apology or explanation, We were trying to patronize LOCAL and regretted thinking we'd have a nice friendly dinner for our Manoa family of four. I will NOT return.

Had their hamburger steak with egg on top. The gravy is a nice dark color. Onions and mushrooms cooked thoroughly. Mac salad was meh to bleh. Overall a decent plate lunch. Look forward to trying their subs though.

I wanted to like this place, but it just didn't do it for me. :-( tried the hamburger steak plate. gravy was great but burger was thin and burnt. when I went up to order the girl took her time drinking a soda before she came up to me and didn't smile. I ordered my food and said thank u and she didn't reply. I guess if ur really hungry u can stop here, but since it's in manoa marketplace there's way better places and other options to choose from. try Red Ginger Cafe upstairs for healthy turkey sandwich.....it's really good and costs about the same. maybe this place has good sandwiches, but service wasn't friendly so I doubt if Id be back.

As a person that loves tasty , inexpensive food, I have to say that for the money Island subs and burgers in Manoa market place is definitely a place to check out. i'd have to say its my favorite burger joint in honolulu. I bought a 1 lb cheese burger for $8. it was more like 2 lbs LOL. absolutely delicious and fresh. You can tell the patty is homemade and i believe its the same patty they sell with their hamburger steak plate which is a ridiculously cheap $6.21 or something like that. Also I like to order the large size onion rings with my burger. I think it's like $3 and they give a lot!!!! it also tastes like homemade battered onion rings . I love this place

A coworker said she was going out to get a burger for lunch and asked if I wanted her to get me one. I asked where she was going and she said Island Sub & Burger in Manoa. I had never heard of it so I figured I'd try it. "get me just a regular cheeseburger". When she brought it back and I opened the styrofoam I was impressed - an actual full sized burger. The buns had even been toasted. Took a bite and though 'yea, this is a dam good burger". I then proceeded to wolf it down quite happily. Burgers are probably my single most favorite food and I eat them at least twice a week. The cheeseburger I had today was as good as any I've had anywhere else on the island - and I've eaten at MANY burger places here.

If you're ever in Manoa, this is a MUST EAT place. It's located next to the crack seed store. We always go there for their burgers!!!! Talk about mouth watering. It's a dive, but aren't all dives fantabulous? They only have a handful of burgers, and you can only get 1/2 pound, or 1 pound burgers. Makes ordering really easy. Their hamburger patties are definitely homemade. Juicy and very flavorful. I got the bacon cheeseburger. OMG, I think we'll have to go there for lunch tomorrow. Imagine biting into a hot off the grill burger and the juices seeping onto your chin. That's how delish their burgers are. But, they don't only serve burgers, they serve subs too. There are only a few tables to sit on, but you can usually find a seat because people are constantly on the move. There is always a line to order. But the line moves very quickly. The customer service is beyond all scopes. Not only does the food come out quick, but they bring the food to your table. Great place for all types of customers. Families, groups, single, couples.

I've been here a few times, but never had any of their burgers or subs! I always end up ordering some kind of grilled chicken sandwich, which is always good! My friends swear by their pastrami sandwiches & burgers, so I guess I'll have to try it one day. As everyone says, their fries are soo good! It has some kind if citrusy tang to it that I find very addicting! I tried asking for extra crispy fries once, but it was still the same :( It's OK though, the taste totally makes up for it! Service is good too. If you order for take out and are sitting around waiting...when you're order is ready, the lady doesn't just stay behind the counter and call out whatever food item you ordered...she actually comes out from behind and walks it over to you (no matter where you're sitting)! That's not all! She doesn't just hand you the bag either...she holds the handle thing open so it's super easy to grab!! I even saw her go outside to give someone their order who decided to wait in the fresh air!

Not a very accommodating place. I wanted a ham sandwich but they said they don't have ham. When I asked why they had it for the Cuban, they said the sandwiches were pre-made and I could not have ham. I tried to order French fries and a soda and was told they don't sell fries unless I ordered a sandwich. I ended up leaving and going next door. Seems strange to turn down paying customers.

Sorry, but went here the other night and I ordered the Mushroom/Swiss Burger..when it came to me, I noticed that the cheese was melted but the Mushrooms were uncooked. I lifted up the burger and the bottom bun, there was mayo, mustard, & ketchup...now for me, i've never had a mushroom burger with all of that...no biggie, I didn't read the menu board all the way...all of their burgers come with that...so I tell the what I think is the owner's wife, that my mushrooms were raw...she said, "oh, you want them cooked more..?" Uh, not more but cooked. She sees that I scraped off all of the fixins on the bottom bun and asks me, do you want more? I tell her, no don't put anything on the burger at all. She brings it back with the mushrooms warm..they put more mayo, mustard and ketchup on the bottom bun... Forget it, I'll just scrap off what I don't like and eat it......wait, there was pieces of a plastic bag under my melted cheese...not just one, but 2...I had to pull it out because it was melted with the cheese *sigh* I tell the same lady and she goes to the register and hands me in an envelope, $7.00 with, "i'm so sorry that the food was not cooked good tonight...." My son had the Cuban which he enjoyed and his girlfriend had the turkey which she enjoyed...just mines was terrible..

If I could give this place a negative I would... The place was completely empty (granted it was in between lunch and dinner) But the owner was a complete A**HOLE! There I was standing with my friend, patiently waiting to order when he ignored me while he continued talking - on his phone - for over 5 minutes!!! (Did I mention absolutely nobody was there??) So when he deigns to acknowledge my existence I place my order - one small fries. He gives me this dirty look and tells me condescendingly that I'd have to order a sandwich. Ok, granted it was there on the signage on the board towards the kitchen but WTF???.... A**H***, that's the last time I visit, I'm not poor.

Some of the better subs and burgers I've had in a long time! Friend and I came in for dinner. 2lg sodas, a hot dog, a Reuben and a fries for $15, hell yes! ;) the place is small but it's quiet, they are fast and it's great food

Eggplant parmesan sub. That's all you need to order. It's SO GOOD!!!!! Every time I go back, I think I want to try something new but I keep going back to the egpplant parm because it never fails to impress me and blow my mind. Their onion rings are really good also, although the large size doesn't seem that different from the small size. My boyfriend has gotten the reuben, which was really meaty and delicious. The service is also courteous. When we were paying, the cashier sneezed and told us to wait while he washed his hands before he took our card. That was really nice! Just writing this makes me want an eggplant parm sub. Trust me, you gotta try it.

I have walked past this restaurant many many times as I ventured to the other shops in the Market Place but on this particular day I pulled the trigger looking for a meal for my wife. I felt over whelmed with all the great sounding choices.........pastrami, burgers, pork chops, etc etc. I settled down on the Hamburger steak and an order of Shoyu Chicken both costs $5.95 each. When ordering she asked me how I want the Hamburger done and because its my wife she prefers little to no pink when ordering steaks and burgers so i ordered it medium well. I liked the fact that they cooked to your desire or doneness. The Hamburger steak came with mac salad and it sure smelled incredible! I really wished that the shoyu chicken came with more than just rice and chicken. I thought it was really strange that it was just rice and chicken with no vegi or even mac salad. My wife's meal was very pink and she was disappointed with the wellness of the burger. I wonder why they ask if they are just going to cook it their way. I will try their sandwiches at some point.

I was starving in Manoa and would have eaten anything at the moment. I decided to get the chili dog plate with a side of mac salad. I'm an not picky at all, but I thought my food tasted horrible. The chili tasted like it came out of a can, and I'm not even hating on canned chili as I have some in my kitchen. Whatever it was, the chili was NOT good. The mac salad tasted grainy and you couldn't even see the noodles because it was so overcooked/ turned to mush. It would have been okay if it had flavor, but it didn't. It's really hard to mess up a chili plate and mac salad in Hawaii. My friends Cuban sandwich wasn't bad. Maybe I ordered to the two worst items on the menu? Who knows.

I eat here often. I love their Reuben sandwiches, whether it's corned beef or pastrami. Their chicken salad is SO good too and VERY filling. I usually order a Reuben sandwich with small fries. Their small fries is quite big. Very friendly service each and EVERY time! Cooked fresh, friendly service, great tasting food, oh and all well under $10! Excellent. They get four stars to be fair, as I still haven't tried a lot of food on their menu, still trying to pull myself away from the Reuben and salad, but I can't wait to try the rest!

Island Sub and Burger is in the Manoa Marketplace on the Longs Drug side. This is a quick lunch stop for me, usually on the weekends. I've tried a couple of their burgers before what this place lacks in overall flavor it makes up in portion size. In comparison to all those "gourmet" burger places, I say the flavor at Island Sub and Burger is a little behind only because the burgers aren't cooked the way YOU like it. Don't get me wrong though, all the fresh ingredients and flavor profiles work well together for sure! Also, as I mentioned, the burgers, as well as, the fries/onion ring portion sizes are huge. Both the fries and rings are also amazing in the taste category! The last time I came here, I tried one of their plate lunches. Pork chop with onions and gravy for $5.95! SO CHEAP! The chop (a 1lbs pork chop supposedly) was a little on the tough side and the flavor was lacking something, but with some tabasco and ketchup...problem solved. I'll definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a good burger/sandwich shop. 4 stars because overall it's a great place...just not the best.

That was an excellent Philly cheeseonion sandwich... wait, what? It was a Philly cheeseSTEAK sandwich? I didn't see any steak... slight exaggeration, but the sandwich seemed to contain a full onion shredded with only a small amount of steak...

I've never eaten any of their sandwiches or burgers but I enjoy their plate lunches. Hubby and I order take out from this place at least once a week with our usual pork chop, steak or hamburger steak plates. It is yummy and this is one of the reasons why I don't cook as often as I should :P Best to call in your order as there's usually a somewhat long wait.

As a native Californian I am partial to "In N Out burgers" and "Original Tommy's" when it comes to burgers. I recently moved to Oahu in July of 2011 and went on a search for the best Island burger. There was Teddy's and Burgers on the Edge that were just ok, and all the usual places like Denny's, Ihop, and Chillies but then, I found it, Island Sub & Burger. This is the top burger joint on the island so far for me. They have been consistant 9 out of 10 times and I have gone, at one time, everyday for a week. I had to slow it down because I was gaining weight. I order the half pound cheese burger with grilled onions done medium and it has always been great. I tried the full pound cheese burger by myself once but it was just too much. Sometimes I will order the full pound and split it with my girl, its enough for two no problem. The price is well worth the meal and it comes out to less than $10 for the burger and fries. I have yet to try other items because I can't help but order the burger when I go. I did try a bite of a hotdog once when my fiancee ordered it and it too was tasty. So if your looking for great burger at a reasonable price and your not far from Manoa, I highly recommend this local buger and sub joint, so go a head, give it a try!

First time eating here and it turned out ok. For $5 something, I can't really complain. I got the 1/2 lb steak plate it was ok. I asked for medium rare, which I got. However, some pieces were really tough and some were decent. I couldn't bite through one piece. It's nice that they drown it in gravy for flavor because I'm sure they don't marinate anything. The mac salad is disgusting. It's grainy and tasteless. Not much to say. Service was nice and they come out and deliver things to you. Would I come again? Probably not but for the price, it's definitely decent.

I was hoping that this little place would have much better sandwiches since there were quite a few people inside. Unfortunately, the pastrami reuben was made up of low-grade fatty (so chewy I had to spit it out) meat and the grilled chicken sandwich didn't have much flavor. I left unsatisfied and am not sure I'll try this place again. The prices are low, but you get what you pay for.

This may be more of a sandwich joint, but i like their plate lunches...especially the hamburger steak plate and the penne meatball pasta. Real good ^.^ and very reasonably priced for the amount of food they give. The owners are always very nice and sweet. Great food accompanied by great service...no complaints here.

Misjudged this place. Mediocre food, but hey for $7pp and a heck of a lot of food, "I'm down!" I've recently tried the Penne w/ Chicken (& extra garlic bread). It's great, the chicken may come a little overdone, but the flavor is there (nothing special) and it definitely can go a long way (left overs for sure). The burgers are also great! Island's gives a huge amount and with a side order of their onion rings, you can't go wrong. MMM, can't wait to head over there sometime soon!

I've tried this restaurant out a few times, and it's great for a quick, inexpensive lunch. Being a college student myself, this is a great place to go in between classes. Today, I bought the mushroom & Swiss burger with fries for my mom and the hamburger steak plate plus an egg, for myself. The burger was excellent, and I have to say that their fries are one of the best I've tried. I would definitely recommend them, they're hot, thick, crispy on the outside and nice and tender in the middle. However, the reason I'm giving them only four stars now, instead of five is that the hamburger steak plate was very bland and tasteless. :( However, for a sandwich and burger restaurant, I'm not too surprised. I would definitely patronize this restaurant again, but perhaps order a burger instead of a rice plate!

I don't think people give this place enough credit as they deserve. I'm a HUGE foodie, and this is definitely one of my most favorite sandwich shops on the island. Eggplant Parmesan Sandwich: Tasty breaded eggplant slices with provolone on a perfectly toasted baguette, sprinkled with parmesan cheese. It comes with a little cup of (ABSOLUTELY AMAZING) marinara sauce which complements the starchy-ness of the breaded eggplant and crunch of the baguette so well. MY FAVORITE!!! Onion rings: Huge (beer battered, I think?) onion rings with a hint of their lemon pepper. Soooo addicting! I always order these with my eggplant parmesan sandwich, and dip them in the marinara sauce... Mmmmm... Hamburger Steak Plate: A giant hamburger patty topped with grilled onions and yummy gravy, all on top of a bed of rice. Arguably one of the best hamburger steaks I've ever had... Perfectly seasoned, and the gravy really ties all the flavors together. YUM! Pastrami Reuben: Stuffed with juicy slices of pastrami, sauerkraut, and 1000 island dressing on toasted rye. Can be a bit soggy from all the juices, but still really good! My dad's favorite! Sadly, I haven't tried anything else off their menu, simply because these are absolute winners in my book!

Quality of the food match their prices, both are cheap. I got the pastrami Reuben, very gristly pastrami. Good thing there wasn't much of it to chew on and spit out, discreetly into a napkin. It was mostly sauerkraut with a thin slice of, supposedly, Swiss cheese. The picture looked waaay better than the actual sandwich. I also got a shoyu chicken to go which I'm not looking forward to eating after the disappointing Reuben. I will not be returning to this establishment.

Went here 2 days ago and had the turkey reuben and my boyfriend had the italian sausage. After we ate everything, I wished I had taken a picture cuz it was SO good. We also had a side of fries (I think it's sprinkled with lemon salt) and onion rings. The turkey reuben is served on fresh rye (?) bread that has a unique swirly pattern. The sauerkraut is the part that seals the deal! nom nom! I really wish I had a picture of the italian sausage sandwich...a whole sausage smothered in thick tomato sauce and grilled onions and bell peppers. I had to take a bite, but realized I'm not really a sausage kind of person. :) For someone that likes spicy italian sausage, it would be a little bite of heaven.

Island Sub & Burger is a place that specializes in hamburgers and sub sandwiches. The meals are priced at a fair rate. I got the bacon cheeseburger and it was very well done. The fries are hot and a bottle of ketchup is offered to anyone who orders the meal. It is a place where one yearns for American fast food that isn't The Counter or McDonalds but something in the middle of the road. Parking is not difficult and the service is quite prompt. I would recommend going here for a visit.

I love pastrami sandwiches so I was a little disappointed with theirs. Although they boast many condiments for their deli sandwiches, the amount of meat was minimal & the cheese was almost non-existent. I also love deli pickles! Theirs was a thin sliver of soft pickle-like substance. I enjoy thick, crunchy pickles. The prices were okay for what you ordered. Maybe the deli sandwiches aren't their number one sellers. I am willing to go back and give it another try. I think I'll order a burger next time. I would've given this place a 2.5 star rating but no half stars on Yelp.

After my first day of summer school over at UH I was on the hunt for a quick lunch in the Manoa area. I was actually looking for a different sandwich shop but settled on Island Sub and Burger. Quick, prompt and rather tasty food. I ordered the Pastrami Deli Sandwich (they offer 3 version of this sandwich so be prepared!) with a large root beer ( It's my soda weakness). The pastrami was good, dripping down my arms good. Wish the bread had a little more of a a toast on it, that's how my Omama serves it. I'm glad I found this place!

The service was terrible, hamburgers not cooked to Order but they ask you how you want it cooked, don't ask for med-rare, the owner will come out and explain to you why he can't cook it med-rare. The hamburger meat is not great 80/20 beef, no fat content in it, no wonder they are only busy at lunch in manoa, those of you who posted that you were from NY/ NJ area what burgers have you had that tasted like this place, don't represent NY if you don't know what you are talking about. Never Ever again, and service was very rude. shoryey

Excellent subs. The price is reasonable and everything I have got there did not disappoint. The best things in my opinion was the eggplant parmesan which my girlfriend always gets and often craves, and the corn beef Reuben with marbled rye. So delicious. OMG and the onion rings! They are exactly the way onion rings should be.

Never tried the burgers... Always ate the plate lunches. I usually got the teri-beef plate. Super good, lots of soft teri beef and lots of rice. Make sure you order in advance or you will be waiting there for a long time.

  • Erich K.

Like their burger and fries. I usually get the bbq burger (1/2lb patty with a giant onion ring and sauce) and sometimes the fries. The 1/2lb burger is a bit overwhelming in size. The fries at this place are unique since it has a nice lemon taste to them. I accidentally went in before 11 am before, but the very nice lady took my order anyway. I also like how she brings your take-out order to you when it is ready. +1 for the service. Food does not come out fast since it is made to order. However, the place is big and comfortable enough to wait in while they cook your food.

Had a roast beef sub, they used real roast beef which was nice, not the processed stuff you get at Subway, I enjoyed my lunch there as did my daughter who had the pastrami sub. We also ordered a small fries to share, had a lemony flavor which was actually rather nice. Think the prices are just right, will try the hamburger next visit.

We had their BBQ Bacon Burger, fries, and pork chop plate lunch. I was very impressed with the huge (1/2 lb.), inexpensive ($7) burger. Sweet roll bun, super juicy, grilled onion. It was all good. We had to share, though, because it was so huge. As previously noted by other reviewers, the fries have some kind of lemon pepper or salt on them. So, they have a little extra tang, which make them, for whatever reason, simply irresistible. I was less than impressed with the pork chop plate lunch. It's grilled onions, pork chops, smothered with regular brown gravy on top of rice. I found the rice to be a little mushy - one of my biggest pet peeves. The gravy was a little on the heavy side for my tastes (I like my gravy lighter), and the pork chops were way dry. I only had one bite and could not chew any more. So, their burgers are definitely great and well-worth coming back for (on a regular basis). But, I have to say that the pork chops were a little disappointing.

I love cured meat sandwiches! Weither its pastrami, corned beef or bacon, me likey! I split a pastrami sub and a pastrami reuben with my sis, just so we can see what's the diff. Both were really good. The sub came with a toasted hoagie where as the reuben had toasted rye. I like the reuben the best because of the generous heaping of saurkraut. The sub did come with a few pickle slices for that vinegar taste but not as much as the saurkraut. The pastrami seemed store bought not freshly sliced deli but still good. We split a large order of fries. It was piping hot! burnt my tongue, 3rd degree burns. Okay, I'm exagerating but it was that hot! It wasn't "mcdonald's" great, but it did the job, accompanying the sandwiches. Most def a return is in order, yet I believe I would only be going when I go to UH.

I'm not usually a sandwich girl, but if you have a hankering for a good Reuben, Cuban, or pastrami sandwich, this is the place for you. Island started out as Bonacasa, owned and run by 2 brothers from Jersey whose dad was a butcher, and their buddy from Florida. They made and sliced their own pastrami and it was awesome. I know this information because when it first opened, I was so addicted to their pulled pork sandwich, served on a sweet roll with their special homemade Diablo hot barbeque sauce, that they called me "Diablo Girl." I became a regular the very first week! That sauce, made with habaneros, was so hot, if you got it on your cheek and hands, it would burn your skin all night long. And you can't eat a sandwich like that without getting it all over your face. Sadly, Bonacasa was sold to a Korean family and they no longer make Diablo sauce. Happily, everything else pretty much remains the same. The pastrami sandwich still kicks ass, although they don't put as much meat in it as before. I may have gotten special treatment before, as a regular, though. Also try the Cuban sandwich--it's really good and it's hard to find a place that makes them well, the Reuben, the super giant onion rings, and the burgers. Update 8/8/08: I took off another star. It's just not as good anymore. I miss the personable service and the giant portions of Bonacasa. My last two sandwiches here were pretty weak.

This is our favorite burger joint. We're from California and were afraid we would miss In-N-Out. Island Burger is better in our opinion. It's a joint, so don't expect the place to be fancy, it's not. The food is great though. Besides burgers, my daughter loves their meatball sandwich. The grilled chicken sandwich was also good. The fries are great too. It's a mom and pop place where the people are friendly and accomodating. The prices are reasonable and everyone we've taken there loved it.

Went here w/ my family for dinner and we all got pastrami reuben sandwichs, . We also got a small order of fries and onion rings and they were pretty good except that the onion rings were a bit burnt so probably would have tasted better if it werent. anyway the sandwiches were good but took pretty long to make it wasnt that busy at all. I mean how long does it take to make a few sandwiches, all they gotta do is grill the bread and heat the meat and POW ur done...lol...o well they owners/workers are really nice so i'd give that to them.

Tucked in Manoa Marketplace next to Fendu Boulangerie (between Safeway and Longs) is this awesome sandwich, sub and plate lunch place. Unfortunately the burgers in the namesake are only ok. Though you can get them cooked to order and are decent at medium rare, they just don't stand out like other things on the menu. Case in point, the $6 plate specials are awesome with little touches like mushrooms and onions sealing the deal for me. The Reuben on marble rye is another especially tasty item and is complemented perfectly by a side of onion rings or fries. Of particular note is that they use a lemon or lime salt on the fries that gives them a nice tart citrusy flavor. Lastly, I'd like to point out they have raspberry ice tea on their fountain which is the 2nd best soft drink in the known universe (bested only by Black Gold - 3/4 Dr. Pepper, 1/4 Coke). tl;dr - Skip the burgers. Try the plate lunches or a Reuben and complement it with onion rings/fries.

They used to be good.. but the sandwiches are a bit too dry.. it's like they pre-cut the meat or something in advance.. I've had their Reuben and Cuban sandwiches a couple times just to see if it was just that day.. but I've had better..

My boyfriend had gone here on his last trip to Oahu and liked the burgers so much he wanted to return. We both got the half pound bacon cheese burger and we have both been up all night fighting for the bathroom. And we are supposed to fly out today.... Not fun. Maybe it's because he ordered our burgers medium. It wasn't a half bad burger going down. And for a decent price. Wasn't as pleasant coming back up though

I've been going to Island Subs and Burgers since it first opened and was called "Bonacasa's" about four years ago. The ownership has changed over the course of that time, but the food is still the same: great! While I usually stick with my usual, the Phillycheesesteak, I've also had the Reuben and the half pound mushroom burger, both of which were really good. I always get a small side of french fries, which they season with salt and some type of lemon pepper, which makes the taste unique. The Phillycheesesteak can sometimes be hit-or-miss, but most of the time the beef is tender, and the cheese is oozing all over the place, plus the sandwich holds sauteed green and red peppers, onions and mushrooms. Yum! Today I tried their newest addition, the Phillychicken, which is basically the same sandwich with chicken instead of beef. As usual, it was great! Good stuff! My advice to those people who don't like waits is to call in your order before hand, especially during times of heavy business (i.e. lunchtime). Rating: 5/5 Pros: The Phillycheesesteak is one of the best on the island and the french fries are some of the best i've ever had. Cons: Nothing too conspicuous here, maybe the consistency?

Sorry to say this because I can see that the family that owns this place is working really hard. But I'm disappointed by the sandwich quality and wait time. Its usually 10 minutes.. which is not long if the food is worth the wait (i.e. Andy's sandwiches across the street). Well, is it worth the wait? Hmm.. Philly cheesesteak - they used Kraft singles American cheese!! I doubt this is the way its supposed to be. The steak was ok, it also came with sauteed onions and bell peppers. Not phenomenal.. if only the cheese was different. Chicken sandwich - The ultimate unforgivable sin to me is the use of cheap, dry chicken. I'm sorry but this place is striked off my list of lunch eateries. Also, I was disappointed not just once but twice. When I initially ordered, the cashier asked if I wanted mustard, mayo and olives... and I said ok to the first two but NO olives (I don't like them)... and guess what, they came with olives, pickles and raw onions. I also have to mention that they spelled vegetables wrong on their menu.. wouldn't the guy printing it at least know you can't spell it that way? VEGATABLES.

This place is a traditional burger diner. Might be a little crowded during the lunch time but otherwise you will find a spot indoors easily. Nice decorations (I love historical photos of Honolulu), clear and simple menu (burgers, fries, pastramis, reubens, few special platters). For hungry men I would recommend the hamburger steak plate (comes with rice, pasta salad, gravy and onions). Kind of heavy but you won't need any other food for next few hours.

I really enjoy eating here, the service is always good, the food comes quick, its yummy and owner is cool. I love their pastrami, and most of the burgers are great too! I would defiantly recommend this place, if your looking for a good lunch spot.

DELICIOUS!..I ordered the chicken philly cheese (with sauteed onions, peppers, and mushrooms)..I waited about 15 minutes, but it was well worth it..The chicken was soft and chewy..Everything was nice and hot..And the bread was chewy and fresh...Everything here looks delicious!....Cant wait to try more...

I've eaten here a couple of times and overall the food is pretty good. I liked the Hamburger steak even though the gravy was a bit weak and the chili/hot dog plate is pretty good. Onion rings are tasty and well breaded and fries are crispy and hot. Stay away from the Corned Beef and don't believe the "New York Sandwiches". The Reuben sandwich had just a few gnarly chewy pieces of backstrap/corned beef and was pretty much inedible.

  • Kat M.

We've eaten here several times. I like their pastrami sandwich. However, the last time I ate there, I felt as if the portions were smaller. The food is good, but not worth the price. Also, the last time we went to Manoa Shopping Center, we decided to order food from another restaurant. But, we really like the onion rings at Island Subs and Burgers (even though it is pricey). My husband was informed that he couldn't just order onion rings. He HAD TO order something else. I think this is in poor taste. Needless to say, I don't think we will ever be going there again. Our last couple of trips there have been disappointing.

hmm not the best. not the worst but not the best. burger was pretty bland. the tomato on my burger was really gross and mealy. not really understandable considering in the parking lot of this restaurant is the farmers market that i buy delicious tomatoes from every week. i had to pay for an iced tea refill which is kind of lame. i won't be going back, too may delicious places to eat in this neighborhood to be eating somewhere sub-par.

VEGATABLES.

I really like Island Burger. I go there every couple of weeks and get the mushroom/swiss burger and fries. Great place for a burger in Manoa.
