Been here a for lunch on a few occasions. Service is always good and the food is consistent. I usually get the steak Caesar salad. Mostly local food which from the comments of my friends is very good. Again I usually try to eat on the healthier side.

This is my thrid amendment to the review, seems each time I go I like this place less. The one thing that it has going for it is that there are usually empty seats (not always a good sign) and they are open when the games are on TV. This is a second emendment of the review. Went for lunch, not so good. This place is inconsistant. Dropped a star again. I've been there enough times now. This is an emended review. Hukilau is not a bad place to go after work but it can't escape the feel that it is a hotel lobby bar. The food is not bad, better than some of the food that I've had downtown. They have a pretty good happy hour cheap beers. Their portions are good sized for the most part. I didn't particularly care for the edemame but everything else was better than average. They have 10 taps which is enough for me, some interesting choices too; Wailua Wheat, Primo, Deschuttes, Drop Top, Shock Top. They have darts which is actually rare downtown.

The service here is awesome. Every single time I've visited (about 5) the wait staff is very friendly. The food is ok, I ordered the salmon pesto linguine which was a little too greasy. My BF loves their burgers.

After hearing through word of mouth that the owners of Hukilau SF opened a location in Honolulu, I was soooo excited to check this location out. Prior to arrival, I had already planned out my order after reviewing the menu on the "Menu" tab on the Hukilau website which appeared to be the same as Hukilau SF. Upon arrival, I was soooo disappointed to see the menu was COMPLETELY different and that I was unable to get my Hukilau SF "usual" ~ Da Big Bruddah Combo with the Mauna Kea Loco Moco and Kalua Cabbage and my favorite alcoholic beverage, Pineapple Head. Not only was the menu completely different, but the entree prices were also significantly more expensive, ranging from $16.95-$21.95 per entree compared to Hukilau SF at $5.50-$10.50 per entree. The Hukilau website should really update it's "Menu" tab, to let customers know they have different menus at different locations, that way they won't be left with disappointed customers. I have no idea why they completely revamped the menu for Hukilau Honolulu, they should reconsider sticking to the Hukilau SF menu...that's what made them successful, why not keep it the same?! If they change the menu to the Hukilau SF menu with SF pricing, I would definitely come back for more, otherwise I'll just wait to go home and eat at Hukilau SF. Other than being disappointed about missing out on reliving my Hukilau SF experience, the service was good and the food was decent...giving this location 3 stars.

I didnt actually go in here and eat. But I liked that on Friday early evenings, you can hear a live band playing hawaiian music playing for free if you sit outside in on a couch inside the hotel lobby.

i used to go here when it was still BRONSON'S. i just recently found out it's been changed to "Hukilau Grill". i had "the bento of the day" which is miso chicken with rice, pasta salad, vanilla bread pudding. i understand that every day is a different "bento of the day". our waitress was helpful. the atmosphere was comfortable and not too stuffy. convenient for those who work in the downtown area.

Had lunch with a friend there today and we were both disappointed. I'm not sure if our waiter was new or just bad but he completely forgot our drinks. The hostess noticed we were sitting there for awhile and got our drinks for us. We never saw our waiter again except for when he brought us our check. I ordered the seafood risotto and for $16, I got 3 small clams, 3 small shrimp and a very small portion of rice. When it arrived at the table, we both commented about how small the portion was. While the risotto wasn't bad, I have definitely had better. My friend had the Hukilau burger which he ordered medium rare. The burger that came was actually crispy and hard. This was the most well done burger I have ever experienced. I think this burger has potential but it was not working today. Lunch took 1.5 hours, not sure if that's normal but luckily we weren't working so it wasn't an issue but I cannot imagine going there if I had to get back to work. In other words, I think there are better lunch options downtown.

Located in the basement lobby of the Executive Center in downtown Honolulu lies Hukilani. A great atmosphere for lunch, happy hour or dinner, with a "sports-bar" feel! Yes, there are television monitors all over the restaurant showcasing ESPN or other sports broadcasting. The menu is diverse: from a nice selection of salads, burgers (I recommend the ESPN burger with the sweet potato fries if you're into burgers), bento boxes (I have tried several depending on the special of the day, and yes, and they are all mouthwatering), pasta and entrees. And yes for those of you with a sweet tooth, they have a nice selection of desserts) :p (I'm biased but I do love their brownies when they have it!) The hostesses and staff are always welcoming. Whether you want a quick "getaway" from the office during lunch, a "pau hana" happy hour or even dinner Hukilau is perfect for large groups or small parties. There is a bar if you just wanna hang out "solo" for drinks or sports! Parking is located in the Executive Center (enter on Bishop St after Hotel St) or on-street parking.

It's been about 3 years since my last visit. Too bad they discontinued the $1 martinis special on Thursdays which was an ideal reason to stop in. Not much has changed. The setup is the same, and food didn't change much either. I really like the atmosphere... and wish they offered live music more often than the regular Fridays. They do offer mojitos that seem to be new to the menu. I'll definitely will return despite the service wasn't as good as I remembered it to be. Another issue included that I ordered kim chee fried rice, but it didn't taste or look like it. I asked waitress if order was correct and she insisted it was kim chee and not regular fried rice???

Hukilau Sports Bar & Grill, located on the bottom floor of Executive Center, is a great pau hana spot to kick back and relax with co-workers. Within walking distance of most downtown offices, you don't need to worry about driving or parking and with Happy Hour from 3:30 - 6:30 Monday through Friday, most downtown workers (who end at reasonable times) can still enjoy great deals! We reserved a table for six for 5:00 p.m. on a Wednesday night, but arrived to find most of the tables empty. Depending on the size of your party and the day of the week, you may not need to make a reservation. Keep in mind, however, that Hukilau occasionally has live music performances that may draw larger crowds. Although there seemed to be only one server and one bartender on a Wednesday night, our table received fast and friendly service! Since it was still the middle of the week and we all had work the next morning, our group mostly ordered a variety of pupus instead of cocktails. Of the extensive Happy Hour menu, we tried the Sizzling Pulehu Steak, Homestyle Fried Pork Chops, Huki Wing Platter, Ahi Avo Poke, Truffle Fries with Asiago Cheese, and Kalua Pig Nachos. Each item was generously portioned and packed with flavor. I was most impressed with the tender and tasty Homestyle Fried Pork Chops as well as the Ahi Avo Poke (We had to order two pokes!). Although I did not imbibe in any drinks, Hukilau offers a variety of Happy Hour Draft Beers, House Wines, and Martinis for just $4! The next time you and your co-workers want to enjoy some casual pau hana drinks, I definitely recommend Hukilau Sports Bar & Grill!

I've come here about three times for some lunch with coworkers. Pros: -walking location for your downtown workers that are looking for a sit down place indoors. -chicken cranberry wrap is delicious -price is decent -sweet potatoe fries -lots of tv's -Arnold Palmer tea/lemonade Cons: - can get really busy depending on the time for lunch - it's almost like it echoes in there with how loud it gets -honestly, the service is more miss than hit

Normally have lunch here once in awhile, as well as happy hour. They have good burgers and salads, as well as a not bad ramen and oxtail. They do have daily lunch specials and bento set. They have a good selection of drinks. The servers are friendly and attentive.

This place is only good if you like cockaroaches in your food. The service took longer than usual for take-out. The hosts were a bit cold and I never got a comfortable, enjoyable resturaunt vibe while there. While they do have an interesting selection, these reasons are why I eat at the better service and quality resturaunts downtown.

Located at the bottom of the Executive Center, this place is a bit tacky in terms of decor, but it's a decent choice for large groups and office related meals. Being close to work, I've been here a few times to celebrate select events, welcome new members to the team and bid coworkers farewell. If going with a large group make sure to call in ahead of time with your group's order. It will shave off some wait time for those that need to get back to work asap. They also have happy hour specials for drinks which rotate depending on the day. Not the best cocktails, but they will do for the price.

Having been here no less than 3 times in the past several weeks, I'd say that I've becoming a regular! The only thing is I keep forgetting to check-in on Yelp. First occasion was pau hana with the office gang. Great pupus, fast service, good French fries, separate checks, delicious sweet potato fries, cold drinks, omg-garlic fries, yay for dim lighting so no one notices I am stealing their fries. On the way out, my boss sees someone she recognizes so I'm left standing. Alone. Embarrassed. A table of guys invite me to sit with them. How's that for a friendly place?! I respectfully decline and pretend to look at my nails. In my bag. At my phone. Tick tick tick. I look up and we all laugh. One guy salutes me with his beer. Next occasion is lunch with my former intern. Thanks to yelp recommendations, I swoon over the salmon with mushroom corn risotto. She orders the pasta primavera. We both cannot finish because there's so much food on our plate! Just this week, I had lunch with my former colleague and another friend. With no reservations, we are still seated in a very lighted section. I order the chinese chicken salad (light, healthy, nice sized portion) and truffle fries to share since stealing from someone's plate will not go unnoticed. They order burgers. Everyone is happy, there's enough noise to cover any awkward silences as we dig hungrily into our food, and best of all, our server is right there when it's time to order dessert: Warm chocolate brownie sundae with three spoons. Gulp! Need I say more, check them out!

This place is located in the Executive Center down the escalator below Longs Drugs. We came here for lunch and being this is my first time here I was impressed with the woven mat walls and the Hawaiian painting and stuff but thats as far as it went. When the waitress brought the water to our table and started to tell us about the lunch special, my attention was drawn to a speck on the glass of water. When she left us to consider what to order, I thought the speck was outside the glass but it wasn't. I stuck my finger in the glass and scraped it and it floated free in the water. I was like "oh f@#% me!" I brought it to the waitresses attention and she was sorry and brought another glass. Now I had speck on the glass phobia. I ordered the prime rib sandwich with melted cheese and red peppers. The wife had the roasted salmon with risotto. The meat for the sandwich was tasteless and the bottom of the bun was soaked with whatever is was sitting in making it mush. I pretty much just ate the meat out of the bun and ate the parts that wasnt soaked. The wife just ate the salmon. She said the risotto was too cheesy where it streched when you pulled a scoop from the plate. She said it was a little past the perfect point rendering it on the mushy side. All this time I'm wondering where did our waitress go. I really like my water topped off when it starts to get empty. It really wasn't that busy either. She was MIA all the way until we wanted the check. Then another guy filled the water glass while we were waiting for our check. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, I went to write down the payment for the tab and my card wasn't there. The waitress had to go back to look for it because it dropped on the ground somewhere smh. Maybe it was an off day for the staff, or the planets were misaligned, I don't know but all I can say is the first impression is a lasting impression. I haven't experienced something like this in a long time. I'm just glad its not all the time.

Pleasantly surprised by the food served in this underground downtown sports bar. Shared a bunch of small plates with friends. Don't miss out on the Avocado ahi poke and the peppercorn rib-eye steak. The fried pork chops were good too. Very pleasant service, I'll be back.

If you have ample time to lunch then this place is OK. Service is super super slow here. Came in at 12:30 on a Wednesday and still had to wait 30 minutes for a sandwich. If I knew the wait would be so long I'd probably wouldn't have chosen to eat here. Part of it is the waitress that pretty much ignored us (we had to remind her to bring us water) and part of it is just a slow kitchen. The service is faster if you come in a big party but if its just you or a small party, I'd go somewhere else. Food is OK but for the time I had to wait and the price, there are better options in the area.

I had previously only been to Hukilau for drinks (their happy hour is fab, btw), but today we went for an office lunch and it was fantastic!! Given the size of our group, when we made our reservation, they asked us to preorder, so within minutes of being seated, our appetizers came out. Glenn was the main guy taking care of us and he was awesome!! Attentive, friendly, and knowledgable!! The potstickers and onion rings were great to start with. I had the Hukilau Burger with Nalo greens and creamy oriental dressing - the combo was sooooo yummy!! It was a little loud during the lunch rush, but overall a definite 2 thumbs up!! Try it!!

Great service and one of the best burgers on the island. Not sure why it isn't consistently in the top 5 list for their burgers, seriously under-rated.

Very weak $1 martinis, poor service and tasteless onion rings. Such a disappointment.

I would have done better going to 7-11 and getting a hot-dog. The grape italian flavored soda was good, the garlic fries were good but that short rib was horrible took 2 bites and was done. Staying at the Aston and didn't want to leave the property after great day at beach, big mistake. The waitress was polite, the atmosphere was good and that's again where the compliments end.

Hidden one floor below street level, the hukilau sports bar and grill has daily bento specials that are always interesting and tasty. Our office staff went down today to enjoy lunch on the last day before the T-day holiday and we all had a burger. Kobe beef and many toppings to choose from; everybody was happy - simply ono! Plus great daily happy hour specials!

Searching for a decent burger downtown... Opted to come here with my buddy and try a couple of their burgers. We ordered two of their kobe burgers. I forgot their names but one burger had an onion rings layer with bbq sauce, and the other had mushrooms and bacon. My friend and I were in agreement that the bbq burger with the onion rings was the better of the two... Their mushroom and burger rendition was mundane and not worth discussing. While the bbq burger was acceptable, something is odd about their patties. The texture was wrong... Didn't have a fresh, solid consistency--more a gummy texture. Couldn't quite put my finger on it while eating, but it didn't feel normal. Is it their fillers? Freezing it causes this? *shrug* In addition, while we ordered both burgers medium. They were cooked through--no pink. We mentioned to the server that both burgers were overcooked, and she explained their policy is to cook the burgers so there is no pink. wth?!?! Go ahead and ruin the kobe burger! Can someone please tell me where I can find a good burger downtown? So far, Du Vin's burger is the best for me when it comes to downtown...

Stopped in for lunch. Had the ruben. It tasted like roast beef, not corned beef. The fries were alright, but overall the sandwhich was meh.

2.8.13 Hukilau...if you can sense my skepticism, let's just say that I was when my Mom suggested this as an option for a lunch date. Honestly, the first thing that popped into my head was the Tiki Room and that "Hawaiian music" they have at Disneyland. This restaurant can be found at the bottom of the escalators near Longs/Ross. Who would have thought anything was down there, let alone that it was actually pretty schnazzy down there...clean area with pink tiling that kind of glowed, a lot of elevators... I thought the restaurant had a nice feel to it--kind of casual, but food is kind of gourmet...and the ambience was nice, not too loud but not cricket status. The hostess was pretty nice, our waiter on the other hand was a little more abrasive. But overall, not bad; we were checked in on multiple times during our meal. The lunch menu ranges from wraps to burgers to pasta to seafood. There are also specials available; they usually have a "bento" option that changes daily. I decided to stick with something from the menu and went with a NEW item (as noted by the menu), the Roasted Salmon - Salmon over a sweet corn & mushroom risotto ($16). Yes, it is on the pricier side here... But quality was great! My salmon was roasted with just the right amount of crisp and the risotto was to die for (i.e. super cheesy and there was plenty of corn and good sized mushrooms)! It was a little on the salty side, but I'm not complaining! I was also surprised to see Plantation Iced Tea on the menu--YUM! I'll def have to try that next time... If I learned anything from my experience today, it would be don't judge a restaurant by it's name! I'm sure I'll be back sometime soon! Happy Aloha Friday! Yelp 365 Challenge: #039/365

Working in the financial district of downtown, it's very convenient to have lunch as there are so many choices. However, with only one-hour lunch break, it's essential to go to an establishment that can deliver the food out on a timely basis. I have been to Hukilau several times now and I do enjoy the ambiance - the sports bar theme plays very well. They seem to attract a great crowd and this place can get packed quite quickly so I make the effort to come here earlier. I recently had the daily special - pulled BBQ pork sandwich and had sweet potato fries substituted instead of regular fries. The sweet potato fries were a big hit as my colleagues were eating off my plate! However, the sandwich was somewhat disappointing as the it lacked the BBQ flavor. The pork was very moist but sadly, it needed much more sauce! The food did not come all at the same time so it was somewhat awkward to eat before others but due to a fixed lunch break, I was pressured to eat first. Food is okay and service is average but not worthy of 4-stars from me.

Went for lunch on 6/13. Service was okay. My server was nice. I asked her if the oxtail soup was any good. She said it's just as good at Zippy's version. So I ordered it. When it arrived the overall presentation was, Meh! Not enough watercress and green onions. The flavor was decent. But the oxtail meat itself was tough. I had to pick out certain ones that weren't as tough. The server asked me what I thought about it and I told her I wasn't impressed. But ate mostly the rice and the broth. She apologized and comped me a dessert. Nice gesture. That would have made my day until after I paid my tab and went home. I noticed on my charge statement that they charged me an additional $33.05 on my card (my bill was $36.00). I tried calling them but no one answered. I left a message on 6/13, the day of my visit and asked that they call me. Today is 6/18 and I still didn't receive a call back explaining the additional charge. I went down to discuss and they told me that someone may have ran my card through on a different tab (WTF???) but they caught the error and didn't process the charge so it should come off automatically. If they caught the error, why didn't they call me (I did leave them a message with my Ph #) to let me know about it and to apologize. But no call or apology. I wondered if some a$$hole tried to do fraudulent charges but now that I caught it, it's a "it'll come off automatically'. B.S. Needless to say I am no longer going back there nor will I take any of my clients there either. Locals treating Locals poorly. How sad.

Excellent service! Our server rocked! We had a large group of about 30 and the Hukilau had everything set when we arrived. The meals were delivered promptly (we had pre-ordered) and they allowed add-ons throughout. The food was good and the burgers were huge! The place is super cute with an "Island Sports Bar" theme. The pricing is typical of a sports bar and the only downfall I see if that you're in the lower section of the building and there are no windows. Enjoy!

HIDDEN GEM Hukilau Sports Bar & Grill is located in the Executive Centre building on Bishop Street. I would have never known about this place bc it's kind of hidden and out of my "normal" scene. (I rarely go Downtown.) I'm so glad that I was introduced to this place bc the food is dang delicious. And $1 martinis are a flippin' steal! AIRPORT BAR The atmosphere is nice and laid back. Even though it's brightly lit, I didn't feel weird at all! There's lots of tables like a restaurant, so there's plenty of places to sit! One of my friends said that he felt like we were at an airport bar-restaurant! That's the perfect description! LOL. WEEKLY SPECIALS Monday: Happy Hour 3:30pm-7:30pm Tuesday: Happy Hour 3:30pm-7:30pm Wednesday: Herb-Crusted Prime Rib Dinner Thursday: Martini Night, Live Music, & Happy Hour ALL NIGHT Friday: Live Music $1 MARTINI NIGHT We happened to make it down here on a Thursday AKA $1 Martini Night!!! I'm not supposed to be drinking bc of health reasons, but for $1 martinis, I had to make an exception. (Not all martinis are $1, it's only certain flavors like apple and lychee.) We had rounds and rounds of $1 lychee martini shots. I don't normally like sweeter drinks, but the lychee was good. Plus, they put an alcohol-infused lychee in each drink! The other cocktails we tried were good, too! Ménage Atois - Absolut Rasberri Vodka, peach and pineapple schnapps, fresh squeezed lime, and sprite. Fresh and tasty, but still sweeter than what I would normally order. Passion Martini - Absolut Citron Vodka, Grand Marnier, Lilikoi purée, splash OJ and soda. (Not one of the $1 martinis). This one seriously tastes like lilikoi juice. It's absolutely delicious! PUPUS: The pupus were outstanding. I'd go back just to eat here! I really want to try this place for lunch and dinner. Everything sounds so appetizing. CRISPY ROCK SHRIMP & KALUA PIG SPRING ROLL $9 yelp.com/biz_photos/0lde… It's served with a Mandarin chili sauce that complements the flavors of the meat so well! This is not a skimpy spring roll. These are packed with a flavorful mixture of meats and veggies. I loved it. FRIED TAKO $10 yelp.com/biz_photos/0lde… Local-style fried, smokey tako served with a lemon chili pepper aioli. It was pretty tender (not ridiculously chewy or anything like that). The flavor of the tako was phenomenal. If you like smoked / dried tako, you'll most likely enjoy this dish. The lemon chili pepper aioli was the perfect sauce to accompany the tako. TERIYAKI STYLE HOUSE SMOKED ISLAND FISH $12 yelp.com/biz_photos/0lde… Not a strong teriyaki flavor, which means you can actually taste the fish! Very nicely done! I loved the smokiness. HUKI-WING PLATTER $13 yelp.com/biz_photos/0lde… You can choose just one or mix up to 3 styles of wings: -Buffalo w/ blue cheese buttermilk dressing -Chipotle Mango BBQ wings -Garlic wings with spicy ko chu jang sauce -Salt and Pepper wings We chose 3 styles (of course). I really liked the Salt and Pepper bc it was simple. The Chipotle Mango was also very good. CRISPY SHIITAKE MUSHROOM & SHRIMP POTSTICKERS $9 yelp.com/biz_photos/0lde… These potstickers came on a plate full of miso-yuzu butter sauce. One of my friends said that it almost reminded him of the See's Candies Caramel Lollypop bc of the sweet, rich and creamy taste. The Shiitake mushrooms were not lost in these potstickers! I could actually taste them. Super delish! VERDICT I definitely encourage any bar-hopping enthusiast to give this place a try. Hukilau is more than just another bar, it's more of a bar-restaurant with tasty food, drinks, and specials. A little out of the way for some, but totally worth the trip and hassle of driving into Downtown. (Taxiing is probably the smarter, wiser way to go.) Yelp 365 - #348/365

Honestly this place is nothing special. I wasn't super impressed with the food, it was just average. And this definitely is not a sports bar. Yes they have a lot of tv's & sporty decorations. But all it is is a bunch of older adults in aloha shirts taking their business buddies for lunch or an after work drink. Doesn't feel like a sports bar at all. Seems very uptight. My husband and I (21 & 20yrs old) went there in normal clothes (not aloha shirts) and we got looked at funny because of our clothing, which was normal, and because of our age. Oh and this place closes early, what kinda sports bar is that?

My daughter actually wanted to go eat there. It was a last minute decision. I'm glad we went the waiters were busy but they definitely had everything under control. We got taken care of and food came right out. I got the burger came with yummy fries and bacon avocado. They had sizzling plates coming out your kitchen Def will go back and try one of them with drinks. They had a full bar and dessert.

Went during lunch hour.....stood at the front for about 5 mins before being acknowledged. Finally sat down, ordered the prime rib sandwich--it was ok, but not great. Fries were burnt a little..... Waitress came back around 10 mins after I got my food....my drink was empty. Guy that brought the food out was sweaty. Too busy during the lunch hour for them to handle, I think. Maybe come earlier, like 11 or later after the lunch rush!

**Corporate Event Review** Executive Chef Jason Takemura personally handled setting up and executing my reservation for 14 of our most important clients. All my requests were met and I didn't have to worry about anything! Would consider coming back for our next corporate event in downtown Honolulu.

The food is decent, a bit overpriced however, but probably has to do with the high rent that they pay at the Executive Center. However, I will never go here again unless I have a couple of hours to kill. Both times I have been here our food order has taken at least 45 minutes. The first time, I thought it was maybe just a bad day for them, perhaps someone called in sick in the kitchen, etc. So I tried it again since it is really convenient and close to our office, but my 2nd experience proved to be exactly the same. Except for this time we even ordered the lunch special and it was a Wednesday and we arrived before noon. A suggestion maybe would be to call your order in or take half a day off.

This is one of the few sit down restaurant spots in downtown. Sports bar theme, comfortable atmosphere - one place I don't mind dining alone. This place is located in the bottom of Exec Center (down the escalators) in the hotel lobby. Go here for lunch, and you will enjoy a great variety of food - from bentos and kalbi to hamburgers, soups sandwiches and stews. They have great onion rings and a fantastic pastrami Reuben on marble rye. Their fries are great - you have choices of Cajun, garlic, or sweet potato. Service is usually a little slow - they are busy and the workers are few, so be prepared to spend your whole lunch hour eating here. But well worth it!

We come here a lot for work lunches but the food has always been pretty good. I haven't had anything terrible. Given the location I think the prices are reasonable. I like that they get a pretty creative with the dishes. They're local dishes that are slightly gourmet. It can get pretty loud in the restaurant though if it's busy but otherwise the service is good, the food is good and it's convenient for me. I'll be back for more lunch meetings I'm sure.

Our latest visit was the final night of the NBA finals. The game had finished about 1hr prior and the place was starting to clear out, about half to two thirds full and the place was still very noisy. What do you expect for a bar underground with no windows or anywhere for sound to escape. Having said that..........the food was decent. The kim chee fried rice was just ok, it didn't have enough stuff to it. No essence of kim chee or anything else it was just blah. The boneless kalbi was just ok. It seemed to just sit on the plate in liquid, even the mixed veggies that came on the plate was just dead. The clams was a lot of shells........a lot of empty shells. The spring roll dish was good but oily. My wife loved the fungus in the rolls though. I guess the Happy Hour prices are what attract a lot of people (prices are not that different than the regular prices) and the sports on tv but I think that if you are in town, don't mind yelling and saying "WHAT?" often this is your spot.

One star for convenience. One star for sports on tv's. One star for quality of food. Minus one star for questionable service every time I go. Minus one star for ALWAYS taking too long to deliver the food. Located under the Longs Drugs on Hotel Street, Hukilau is in a great location for those of us who work downtown, particularly along Bishop Street. Lots of tables inside and out, and the choices on the menu are great for lunch fare. Today, I had the prime rib sandwich with sweet potatoe fries. The fries were winna winna chicken dinna, but the prime rib sandwich was really just OK. It comes as a Philly Cheesesteak wannabe, but fails to deliver what I was hoping for. I ended up eating the beef sans the bun. Thankfully, someone did come around pretty often and kept my iced tea glass full. My lunchtime experiences at Hukilau have almost always resulted in the same thing - frustration with how long it takes for the food to come out. They must be the only restaurant in downtown Honolulu that doesn't fully get what 'lunch hour' means. Don't eat here if you're in a hurry, but if you've got time to kill and you want a place to sit for a while, eat, and socialize, the Hukilau delivers. I'll be back, no doubt.

I was first introduced to this restaurant for a company event and the food was meh! But when we dined here for a "girl's lunch," ordered off the menu and tried the fresh fish and the risotto, I was hooked! Large portions, great flavor, friendly waitstaff. Only drawback might be sitting next to co-workers that you don't want to bump into, so whisper so that you're not eaves-dropped on! Enjoy!

For years I've passed by Hukilau (used to park in the building) and thought to myself I should try it out. Finally, one of my coworkers suggested that we go because she had gift certificates that were about to expire. It seemed okay at first. We went at lunchtime so it was crowded but there were a few open tables. The waitress asked if we were ready to order but we weren't, but then she didn't come back for another 10+ minutes. We decided to get three different sandwiches and share them all since we all wanted to try each other's. We asked to have the sandwiches sliced into three pieces each. We each also got garlic fries with our sandwiches (not listed on the menu, but the waitress asked if we wanted). We each received our bill and were astounded as to the amounts. My mushroom tempura burger and plantation iced tea came out to $19 before tip! We realized they charged each of us $2 for slicing the sandwich plus an additional $1 each for upgrading to the garlic fries. We asked a worker about this and he said that the $2 "splitting fee" was on the menu. We were under the impression that just slicing it would not be considered "splitting." He also said the garlic fries had the $1 up charge just like the sweet potato fries (sweet potato fries were on the menu, garlic fries were not). He was friendly enough but he didn't make the situation any better either. I think we all understood these extra costs, but they should have been told to us by the waitress up front. We would have just sliced our sandwiches ourselves instead of paying $6 for someone else to do it for us--we could have gotten dessert or another meal for $6! Normally, I feel like the manager would give us some kind of credit back since the up charges were not mentioned to us up front...even just to make us happy. $6 is a small cost for the restaurant (they probably didn't even incur ANY cost for slicing) to keep our business. That being said, the food was just OK and not worth the price, even before the up charges. Only one of us left a tip and none of us will be going back.

Overall a good sports bar. Convenient for a work day lunch. Had the special of the day - shrimp and mahi on a curry risotto. Risotto was more like sushi rice in texture, rather than the creamy porridge that is traditional risotto. Still a good dish. Their fish seems to be quite well done for the price. It flaked perfectly. Fun, casual place to chill with friends after work. We usually come to Hukilau for a few drinks, fries, and garlic edamame. It's a great place to unwind and get ready for a night of going out. I particularly like the iced tea-- I don't usually like flavored coffees or teas, but the fruitiness of this one is pretty delish. Service is pretty good and I like that Hukilau doesn't get too packed.

Since I've been in downtown for almost 2 weeks now, I get to eat lunch with my fellow downtown friends and old coworkers. So one day me and a friend came to eat here from hearing reviews from her saying that the food is good is good and so is the quality and price...and nothing beats those three combos! Upon arriving we got seated immediately and the atmosphere was a sporty lounge/bar kinda affect but very casual and soothing from the whole downtown traffic and rush! The menu was huge and since I was extremely hungry I had the Hukilau burger that came with potato bread, medium lean ground beef patty, lettuce, tomato, pickles, a special sauce and no onions! It was the perfect combo!...Note that I am once again not a burger fan but she kept saying how good it was so I just had to get it! And yes it was as GOOD as she said it! The bread was so soft and the beef was so lean and unfatty tasting as while the avocado was so fresh and huge generous portions because I love avocado period! My friend had some sorta pasta that did look delish but I am also not a huge pasta person due to the over bloating feeling and I'm a little crab conscious. She did say it was good tho! One miss was the lemonade that we got, thought it would've at least almost tasted like fresh squeezed but it actually tasted more like carbonated sparkling water with a hint of lime and suger....TOTAL YUK! And the hits were of course the vibe of the place, the waiter was really nice and helpful, the food was YUMMO and the price was even better! Because all that was less that $25 with tip! Not bad for something "dine-in" in heart of downtown! I love now that everyone I know from my old coworkers, to my new coworkers and friends and me are raving about this place together!

Not open in the weekend...but happy hour on Friday with a little music was not so bad since this away from the touristy areas. I had the pupus of crispy shitake mushrooms and shrimp pot stickers. The dumplings are in a miso-yusu butter sauce. The whole thing is normally $9 but $7 during happy hour. But I really liked the boneless kal bi short ribs marinated in Ko Chu Jang sauce. It had a tiki sign beside in the menu for excellence, and I would give the whole thing 3 tiki's.

While recently staying at the Aston Executive Center, I ate at the Hukilau a couple of times since it was easy to order and take the food up to my room. For dinner one evening during their Happy Hour, I had the calamari and sweet potato fries from the Tapas menu. Really too much for one person, so I supplemented my breakfast the next morning with sweet potato fries :-) I then had lunch there one day and had the Grilled Opah Sandwich. Delish! Large portions and if they weren't a chain, I'd probably give them 4 stars. Service was a little slow both times, but I need to remember that time is relative in Hawaii :-)

I've been here about 10 or 20 times during my years of working in Downtown, Honolulu. I've always been here during lunch time. It can get very busy, crowded and noisy as many business meetings and business men come here for lunch. It is a SPORTS BAR.... So far, I've always come with a reservation (to guarantee seating) and it's always been without hassle. Hukilau serves cute Japanese style "bentos" in traditional Japanese style "bento boxes". Very cute on their side. They have a changing daily menu also. Thumbs up in my opinion. When you are a frequent lunch goer here, you want a different menu, every once in a while to change up your meal. Also, Hukilau always has some sort of fish dish on their menu, which is excellent on my book! Not many places in Downtown serve fish, which is odd as Hawaii is in the middle of the ocean!

Hukilau was my second home when I lived in San Francisco, and no doubt, will be one of my go-to places since I've recently moved back to Hawaii. Although both locations are related, Hukilau Hawaii has a different feel and menu from the SF one. First off, the space is huge. Good, because you don't have to wait long to be seated. The menu is different too. It's more sophisticated, offering a wide selection for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, such as kalbi steak, kobe beef burgers, seafood, fish, and lots more! They even have daily drink specials. Every Thursdays after 6pm is $1 martini night. Sometimes they are so busy that the waitress may forget a thing or two, but other than that, customer service is up-to-par. Bartenders are quick and personable too. Huki-WOW!

While the need for a power lunch downtown hasn't arisen recently, Hukilau is certainly a good choice for that. However, this time around, my review update is based on their afternoon happy hour. Let's be honest, it is one of the best bets in downtown and offers good food, decent service, and some great drink specials. The happy hour menu offers some tasty noshes to complement those cold suds you're going to be sucking down. Whether it is something simple like the garlic fries or something more bold like crispy calamari, you won't be wow'ed and say it is among the best bites you ever had, however it won't disappoint where you say..."why did we order that?" Their kobe sliders are well done with a moist patty with flavors that come through and complement the beef rather than overwhelm it. Service doesn't wow you with attentiveness, however they certainly don't let your water glass go empty and are always on hand when you are ready. The bartenders can mix up some pretty good drinks whether you want something sweet or something more traditional. Like I said, they don't wow you, nor do they disappoint. However, if the time comes for a pau hana and you are downtown, Hukilau certainly is a very good choice to check out!

I thought this place was going to be a hidden gem, but I was slightly mistaken. The first part of my review is for the food, which I wasn't a fan of. Whenever I go to new places, I have to get their garlic fries. I base my perceptions and first-impressions on garlic fries. Sadly their garlic fries didn't cut it. They weren't horrible, but they didn't "wow" me. I also wanted to get the kalua pig nachos and compare it to Uncle Bo's ... I'd recommend going to Uncle Bo's. Next time I'll have to order different types of food. The second part of my review is for their happy hour. Excellent happy hour. Went on a thursday, and they had super amazing drink specials. $3 for the house red and white wines. $3 martinis (kind of small, but hey it's $3), and $3 beers. I posted a picture of the happy hour menu, so you can see what days are good for you. Different days (monday through friday) have different specials.

Great place to have a sit-down lunch since most of Chinatown is a "take-out". It gets a bit noisy because that's where everyone goes for lunch but other than that the food is AMAZING!!! Oh and a guy that had a pagoda white shirt on was walking around and a sticking out podium with "PAGODA" sign (affiliation?), doesn't matter anyway. Glad to find a great place to have my risotto with salmon and fast great service. .Thanks hukilau.

T'was my mistake for staying in Chinatown on a First Friday. Hukilau was PACKED to the point that my friend and I sat in the lobby area of the hotel! This turned out to be a blessing in disguise because the music was deafening. Drinks are decent. Pork chops was excellent. Truffled fries disappointing. Overall kind of pricey, but my friend had a discount! So a night of drinking and eating = $30 per person (including the discount and tip).

Whether you're in the mood for a light or heavy meal, Hukilau is the place to go. There is also a full bar. Inside the decor is sports bar/ tiki bar/ sit down restaurant. There are 8 flat screen TVs spread out evenly with ESPN on. Right now it's Christmas time, and they've decorated thoughtfully. This place is suitable for any sports fan or kids or anyone really. Happy hour is mon - thurs 3:30 - 7:30 pm and all night Friday. The menu is simple with 2 pages of delicious sounding food. The menu is very self-explanatory and clearly written.

This place is alright. The food options here are what you would expect. I do enjoy their happy hour, but I can't say much about their prices reflecting traditional happy hour prices. Some items are brought down by a dollar or so. My favorite night is Thursday. They have $1 martini's and happy hour all night for people that want other beverage options. Their pitchers are reasonably priced. All-in-all, it's a decent place for happy hour. It's a spot for a business meeting, but that's due mostly to its ideal location. Note that cell phone reception is sparse to non-existent. Make sure your guest knows where the place is.

I've always wanted to eat here, but never traveling to downtown made it sort of hard. But, the other week when my boss and I were thinking where we should go for lunch she brought up the Hukilau and since I've been dying to come here but haven't gotten to, I jumped at the chance. Located at the bottom of the Executive Center (below downtown Long's), you take the escalator down and right at the bottom is the entrance to this sports bar-type restaurant. We were immediately seated having come right before the lunch rush and I proceeded to look over the menu. They have a lot to choose from: specials of the day, salads, burgers, sandwiches, entrees, but all was over overlooked when I saw oxtail soup on the menu. Hello, JACKPOT! I ordered that and my boss had the kalbi plate. When our food arrived I had this massive bowl that was accompanied with a side of rice and a garnish of ginger and the kalbi came with two strips of meat (I don't think it was traditional kalbi with the bone in, I believe it was boneless), stir fried vegetables, and rice. I didn't get to taste her dish, but my dish was very good. The broth was delish and I couldn't stop sipping on it. The oxtail... oh the oxtail. There was sooo much of it!! I love meat that has been simmered so long it just falls of the bone and melts in my mouth. Some of the downfalls is that service was a little slow. They didn't seem overly busy, but in total we almost had a two hour lunch (thank goodness I was with boss lady or I would've been in trouble!!). I'm not sure if the server was in between shifts and she was getting off, but towards the end of the meal she seemed to try and rush us (again, there was no wait or anything). But if she was in between shifts I've been a server before and know how that feels ("can you just leave already I want to go home!!"), but still. And the last thing, some items seemed a little expensive. Our dishes were only $12, but if I got the miso butterfish, that would've cost me $19. Ouch!! I'm glad I finally got to try here and there are definitely enough items on the menu to keep me interested, so I will definitely be back for either breakfast, lunch, happy hour, their tapas dinner menu.... or all of the above!

While I park at the Executive Centre frequently when I have business in downtown, I have never made a pit stop for an appointment at the Hukilau Grill. Yet recently we had a lunch meeting and this seemed to be the most central location to meet, dine and conduct business all at the same time. The ambience is fairly casual, with a lot of business folk dining. The place is a tad bit loud however we were still able to get work done, although I would definitely not discuss trade secrets there simply for the pure fact that tables were fairly close to one another. Our waitress was wonderful and I am kicking myself for forgetting her name as she definitely deserves props. She was on it refilling our water glasses and taking our orders timely and quickly. I ordered a portabello mushroom sandwich, (yum!) and my cohorts had a burger and a poke salad (they both said it was delish!) My only comment about my meal was that the French fries were a little over salted, but other than that, the sandwich was Ono!

The great thing about this place, and the reason everyone ends up going here, is that it is conveniently located, the happy hour prices are decent, and happy hour lasts until 7:30PM. Most of the major downtown office buildings are within a couple blocks from this place, and it is perfect for those who have to work late. The food is nothing spectacular though. One time I got some sort of fish burger and I had a BONE in it! Yuck... And another time, my boneless kalbi was really undercooked. The better things to stick to are the fries, sliders, and kalua pork nachos. They have several types of fries and they are all good. The sweet potato fries and the cajun fries are really good. Not the healthiest selection here, but their salads aren't too bad if you want something not deep fried and covered in cheese. The Asian Chicken Salad is good. The drink menu has a lot of options, and for happy hour, the martinis and house wines are only $3. There are lots of delicious sounding martinis. I've had a couple and they were pretty good. The service is kind of slow--order fast and expect to wait a long time. They'll show up to take your order, fill your glass, get you what you ask for, etc, but don't expect them to do it quickly. Part of it is the waiters, part of it is how long the kitchen takes to get the food out. The space is pretty large, so you can fit a large party there. But they also have live music so it is way too loud to carry on any kind of decent conversation. You'd be better off by taking a smaller party and sitting away from the music. There are also many TVs all around the place. They usually only show one station, but if there is a big game on, it's a good place to watch it. The bathrooms are outside of Hukilau. When you go out the front, turn immediately to the right and then right again into the hallway on the side.

This is one of the few downtown restaurants that you can sit down at and have nice lunch. You'll want to go a bit before 12 if possible because it gets crowded. Service was good and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I had the Prime Rib sandwich with Sweet Potato Fries for lunch today. It was a decent meal, nothing special. Next time I'll try one of the burgers.

I pulled a 12 day stay at the Aston @ The Executive Center in downtown 'Lulu, and the Hukilau was its indigenous restaurant & bar. After multiple visits during my stay, I can say that the Hukilau is the BEST hotel bar that I've ever had the pleasure of being a 'temporary regular' at. I was always greeted with a warm welcome, and the staff is fantastic. The manager, Emerson, is a stud and got me hooked on a certain drink that will be a staple in my nights of drinking from now on (see below). The food is fantastic, most of which is discounted during a very LONG happy hour (something that I'm not used to). I had the Kal Bi, the Kim Chee Fried Rice w/ pork & shrimp, the sashimi, and both the Oxtail Stew and Soup and all were amazing. Oh...and the drinks...FRIGGIN' DELICIOUS. Go with the 'Summer Breeze', it's an absolutely phenomenal cocktail that tastes like a watermelon mojito. I'll readily admit that I drank enough in 12 days to sink a ship. There are t.v.'s set to sports, cheap (select) martinis during happy hour, and a local beer on tap. I'd say the only 'con' for this placeis that it's sunk into the first floor with no windows to see outside. But really, that's about it. Well worth the money.

I wanted to try their poke bowl, but for some reason they ran out of poke bowls and only had poke salad....so I ordered that. Poke was okay-tasting. Not great, but not bad either. Terrible for the price you pay, actually, since they pretty much give you a big plate of lettuce, throw in a few chopped tomatoes and cucumber and maybe a quarter of an avocado, sliced, atop a small bed of the poke with some deep fried lotus chips which tasted like fried nothing. Ponzu vinaigrette that went with it was okay, but not amazing. I liked the place, though. It's very casual, and I can see how people would like to come here for happy hour and the pupus during sports games. Next time I'm going to try one of the burgers or the miso pork because apparently they're pretty good.

Update: I went back here and got the ESPN Sports Animal BBQ burger. It was HEAVENLY - one of the best burger's I've tasted. It comes with Kobe beef, onion rings, guava BBQ sauce, advocato and bacon. Get it with the sweet potato fries- the fries come with a dipping sauce that is delicious!

I came here for lunch with my co-workers last week. Our food took 50 minutes! The waiter forgot to put our order in and so the people who arrived after us all got their food first. This type of service is really unacceptable in downtown during the lunch hour. By the time we got our food and ate it, it was almost 1:30pm. It's a good thing our boss was with us so we didn't get in trouble for taking a 1.5 hour lunch break. To make up for the mistake, they gave us 50% off on the bill. But after that long wait, I don't think any of my co-workers will want to go back there again.

Discovered this place recently and ordered the lunch special - grilled ahi sandwich with sweet potato fries. It was good, except that it came with a very heavy mayo aioli that I had to scrape off. The fish was fresh and the portion was generous. The sweet potato fries were piping hot, but could have been crispier, although I know it's hard to do sweet potato fries well. The service was quick and friendly, but the restaurant was a little too noisy and "sports bar" for my usual mood. I might be back for lunch when I'm working in downtown again.

Have had lunch here a couple of times. It's a casual sit down restaurant in downtown, which already is odd. It doesn't serve things in styrofoam containers! Have had the miso pork and it's very tender. A little salty but tender and quite good. It's super chill down there, but beware, the cell phone connection is terrible; guess it's like a basement. It's fairly reasonably priced. Has a bar with neon signs and lots of cheesy Hawaii decor. If you need a sit down lunch place, this works. But don't expect a grand ol' lunch. But you get some solid local food. And if you can't find it--take the escalator down near the Longs Drug store on Bishop/Hotel street area...Escalator on Bishop Street.

Checked this place out during happy hour. The place was empty so service was amazing ;). I went there with three guy coworkers. I was the only one having shots they had boring beers...so I guess you could say it was a ladies night out. Lol. We didn't order any food because we had just come from a private party at lucky belly, so I can't review that. But I can review the awesome experience of being able to watch playoffs with a couple of what you could call bar regulars (not my coworkers) and staff of the bar. I would definitely come back. Seems like a good place to people watch. Maybe next time I will even try the food.

My friend and I had lunch here and for business people, this is a convenient place to meet and gather for any casual or business lunch. Place has a sports theme with multiple TV and game jerseys favoring the University of Hawaii and is the home of the Downtown Athletic Club. Overall food is high quality with a number of items. I've been to this place three times and the food has gotten better over time. I had the side salad with Chinese style steamed opah while my friend had the Mediterranean bean soup with seafood pasta. For dessert we had mac nut tart with kona coffee ice cream. Atmosphere and service was good but not great. My salad was $7 and the fish was $16 with the ice cream at $5 so expect to pay a more than average price for a business lunch. I like the fact that the menu had a variety of items and the place was packed at lunch time however keep in the mind the noise level was really loud and you'll be competing with the people and the TV.

My husbands HPU group planned to meet up here for pupus and drinks on a Friday night. We had a pretty big party and they wouldn't allow us to steal an extra table. I found this to be odd. Oh well bring on the menus! The happy hour pricing was pretty cheap! I had a pomegranate martini (more sugar than alcohol). My second drink was a glass of wine. Not bad for $3! We ordered the prime rib sliders which were pretty tasty. We also ordered the shrimp and mushroom wontons. I would stray away from those if we return. Finally, we ordered the spic garlic edamame. If you like garlic, which I do, this is perfect! Pretty happenin on a Friday night!

This is kind of the restaurant I resort to when I have no other choice and everything else downtown is closed at night! The restaurant is for the after work drinks crowd, in for a nice beer and some pupus. I wouldn't recommend for lunch or dinner because the food is just OK. I got a burger and fries once and they were mediocre at best.

Came here yesterday with the gang from work...since it's right across the street it made perfect sense! I have never even heard of this place until now... This is what I wanted: Miso Butterfish. Heard it was to die for! It must be since it was SOLD OUT at 11:45am. Super Sad Face! Instead, I decided to order an Animal Style burger. It was HUGE! Covered in avocado, guava barbecue sauce and onion rings with 2 slices of bacon. It was fantastically over cooked!! When you want medium, and get well done, it really sucks! Needless to say, I didnt eat my food. I decided to opt for the Poke Avocado Salad. Ah, the redemption...It was delicious! The tuna was fresh and the greens were too! The flavors were perfectly tangy and spicy and the serving was very filling. I would return just for this salad. Overall, I dont think that I would come back unless it was for the Poke Avocado Salad. The place was hopping for lunch so it seemed that there would be a long wait if you wanted to just go grab lunch.

Located on the bottom floor of the Executive Centre in Downtown Honolulu, the Honolulu Hukilau franchise shows enough promise that if you go at the right time with the right staff working, this place can easily supply you with a memorable lunch/dinner with your friends or coworkers alike. The menu features a decent selection of fish, chicken, steak, burgers or even chili to satisfy your appetite. My personal favorite is the Shrimp Risotto. The only problem with this dish is that it only seems to be available to order bi-weekly and you have to ask for it specifically since they do not list it on their menu. If the Risotto is out, other great alternatives I recommend are the Mauna Kea Burger, the Terikayki Salmon (although the portion is a bit small for my liking) and the Ahi Poke. There are a quite a few decent options on the menu to choose from, even though I share the same sentiment as other Yelpers who mention that the dishes are overpriced. Service is pretty hit and miss . I've had anywhere from exceptional to downright atrocious service (as I said before, it depends on the staff). I remember my first time here, a friend and I decided to eat here after the lunch rush and the restaurant was virtually empty except for 5-6 idle servers just hanging out. Regardless, it took us about 20 minutes for someone to help us. I felt more neglected than a redheaded stepchild when I asked two of the servers to help us and they told us they would return, but never did. How did I finally get served? I seriously built a 2 foot tower with our menus and table condiments in order to get SOMEONES attention (immature I know, but I was proving a point!). The plus side of my little childish act, however, is that we received 50% off our bill because the manager was "embarrassed" on behalf of his wait staff. In short, Hukilau Restaurant is a "safe" option to meet up with a friend for lunch or for a quick happy hour. I especially enjoy the live music they have here on Friday evenings. However, my experiences here vary as much as my schizophrenic ex-girlfriend's behavior, therefore I have to settle for giving it just an "okay" rating.

Its website states that "Aloha Served Here." Ya right! The only "Aloha" I saw was "Mainland Aloha," the fake type. The kind that mainlander's try to portrait when they are trying to fit in. Sad! All 1 star and 2 star reviews are all spot on. They advertise in their web site that they are an A.i.O. company, which explains a lot. See my other reviews of A.i.O. companies: Obun Hawaii, Inc.: yelp.com/user_details_re… Japanese Guide to Hawaii-Ai yelp.com/user_details_re… After trying to deal with Jason Takemura, self proclaimed executive chef (from Aiea, HI), you might as well label him a prep cook. Customer service is below a 1 star rating. Sports Bar? Ya right! More like an "Under city cave." This place is lame, and would not recommend anyone to go here. Can you believe they have 2 other locations besides this SH** hole?!@#$%

I had the Bento of the day: garlic chicken, spring roll, tossed salad with oriental dressing and bread pudding. The garlic chicken didn't have much flavor, I've tasted better like The Alley's Tasty Garlic Chicken was much better. It's one of the nicer restaurants in the downtown Hotel Street side. I think I'll stick to their hamburgers and sweet potato fries.

This rating is based on the numerous (10+ times) I've been there, but recently this place has gone down hill which warrants only 2 stars. Service has certainly gone down. How can an order of beer take over 10 minutes? They explained that it was Friday night with many large groups. Shouldn't you have more staff, especially on a Friday? The food is good and the all night happy hour on Friday means we can order more for the same price. The problem with going to the same place frequently is that the food becomes boring. They really need to change/upgrade their menu. Add some daily or at the very least weekly specials. Definitely need a break from this place.

Dinner of shared plates ~ everythng was good but nothing stands out except the sweet potato fries. They were quite tasty. Drinks were reasonably priced at happy hour. There was a band playing ~ they were good and I enjoyed them.

Went there for a goodbye party for a co-worker. Since he worked closely with Kurt Osaki, the party was held there. I thought the food was good and the atmosphere was nice but... My wife and I were ready to pay our bill and flagged down the waitress that we had been placing all our orders with. We purposely ordered through the same waitress because the group was large and we didn't want our orders to get mixed up. She bring us our bill but they charged me for a couple of pitchers of beer that we didn't order. My wife had a mixed drink and I had one bottled beer together with a bunch of food orders. When I told the waitress that I didn't order the pitchers, she said one of the other waiters added them on there because I ordered them from him. The waiter comes over and tells me he remembers me ordering the pitchers. My wife and two co-workers all tell him we didn't order the pitchers and that all four of us were sitting there the whole time. I even tell him that all our orders were placed with one waitress to avoid this situation. The waiter still doesn't believe us and calls the manager. The manager (who looked very young) asks me what the problem was so I explain the situation and tell him no one ordered the pitchers and that it must have been someone else in the group. By then, we had been waiting about 15 to 20 minutes to pay and most of the group had left. The manager tells me his crew are always "on it" and don't make mistakes like that. Well, sorry to tell you but one of them just did! He then goes on to tell me that he "wants" to believe me so he will take care of the cost of the pitchers. Was I supposed to thank him for that? He's basically telling me "I believe my waiter over you and the other three people sitting with you because you must be drunk on your one bottled light beer. But since I'm a nice guy, I'll do you a favor and give you the two pitchers for free." We finally paid and left after half an hour of waiting. Never again.

The Hukilau in San Jose, CA is better than the one here in Honolulu.... This place should NOT be called Hukilau Sports & Grill, it should just be called Sports Bar & Grill. What kind of hukilau is this? No authenticity whatsoever, other than the fact that there were pics of beaches on the walls and they served tropical drinks that tasted like juice.

This place is pretty good for a hotel restaurant/bar. We live and work nearby and have stayed at the hotel, so we have been there many times for lunch or dinner. I only have 2 complaints. 1 is that they close down pretty early especially on the weekends. 2 is that I have trouble eating gluten free there. It's Hawaiian-Asian food so they use a lot of soy sauce, and if you ask them to leave the soy sauce off, it's pretty bland. Most of their salads use soy sauce, even the Ceasar parmesan! So that is weird if you're not from Hawaii (unfortunately, it's pretty common here). They try to accommodate me with gluten free, but it's not easy. We have eaten many dishes there and they are usually good if I don't specify gluten free. Their meat dishes are particularly good. They have a great drink called a Huki Thai Punch that I usually order. It's some sort of fruity drink. They also have really great root beer floats. I don't like their hamburgers because I just had it once and it had a weird taste to it. Otherwise their food is good if you're not too picky or have any allergies. The wait staff is very nice and courteous--sometimes you will get one that is slow, but mostly they are fine. They have a really delicious Reuben sandwich at lunch, too.

Love this place for lunch, not to many nice restaurants in downtown Honolulu where you can do a sit down in nice surroundings with good food. Service may be a bit slow, best to go there before the crowd comes in or your wait for your food could take 1/2 hour or more. We always try to get there just before 11:30 am and make sure we get our order in. Also if ordering dessert, be prepared to wait for that as well. Now the food is just wonderful and tempting, plated very well. Portions could be a bit small at times, depends what you order. I always have the miso pork that comes with stir fried veggies, very tasty and your choice of white or brown rice. Another delicious item I would definitely go for is the boneless kalbi. Oh, so tasty! The burgers with the huge side of fries look out of this world, but...I'm still trying to watch my weight, so would have to forego the fries and ask for a side salad :( Their entree salads are also very scrumptious, so good that they must have as much calories as a regular entree. But they really are huge and delicious. Overall, I think no matter what you order, it'll be delicious. Just hate being on this weight watchers and can't really order what I really want! Oh, and they also have happy hour with great pupus and they also have a private room for parties! They are very accommodating!!!

Ok, so as weird as this may seem.. I really like the Hukilau. The food is good and although the wait staff is a little slow, It's not a place that i would typically eat and bail so it's okay. I like to sit and chat especially for business lunches and prior to this, xmas parties. The GM is really nice and the staff is very friendly. It's a cool location in the heart of downtown and underground! I would say to try the sweet potato fries (they're really yummy) and the risotto. doesn't matter what risotto dish it is, they're all really good! I had the mushroom risotto once and then the last time it was a salmon risotto--OY, it was delish. and the portions were huge!

I'd just like to start out by saying that I've never been to the mainland Hukilau restaurants and really only want to compare this sports bar to others in the area. I've been here for drinks and pupus several times. Highlights include good beers on tap and multiple big screen TVs, perfect for catching a game or watching a UFC fight (and you can reserve a table ahead of time for UFC!!!) One saturday night they had happy hour pricing during the ENTIRE UH football game which was prominently displayed on 6 or more televisions. This place ROCKS for watching sports! Pupus that we enjoy: Shrimp fried rice - good quality sticky rice that is not too greasy. It needs an overeasy egg though... Sliders - three cute burgers: bacon and pepperjack, mushroom and blue cheese and bbq. Multiple friends have raved about these. Chili - extremely high quality chili Sweet potato fries Calamari - interesting because it comes with long beans Boneless Kalbi - good flavor and served with pickled cabbage Wings - I like that you can pick three varieties in one platter Truffle fries - don't taste like truffle but they are still delish! Overall A-ok. Bartender is very friendly. Now they offer 50% off pupus all night on Mondays. Been there for two UFC fights and both times they had different liquor samples (tequila and rum I think) and they were very generous.

Restaurants in downtown are up and down. I wasn't expecting much from this basement restaurant. Ironically, if it was on the street level, I think it would be more popular. But you can't help but feel like you're in a cave. The food was decent. We got there for happy hour prices and I felt it was reasonably priced. However, I don't think i would be happy paying full prices for the appetizers. We tried the kal-bi, pork chop, one ton, and onlin rings. They were all pretty good except the pork chop. it was a little on the fatty side and not seasoned enough. Beer was good. But I would pass up on this place for somewhere with a little more atmosphere. The waiter was helpful although not overly friendly.

THE SUSHI HERE SUCKS! we went to the S & M - "sushi and martinis" - night this past week and there were about 14 people in the joint. although they had live music, it seemed like a waste because the people there were probably regulars who would most likely go with or without music. we ordered the dynamite roll and the scallop roll and both looked great but tasted awful. apparently, they DO NOT season the rice for their sushi so it tastes like plain rice that does not enhance to the sushi flavor. in fact, it somehow detracted from the flavor so it is a huge BUMMER! we also ordered their boneless kalbi. this was supposed to be a popular item, but certainly not with us. it was tough and chewy and would have been tastier had it been from yummy's or pearl's. a friend ordered a martini and it was a small glass and tasted rather sugary. 3 strikes! the server was pleasant, friendly and attentive. the ambiance was okay as it is in the basement of the executive center. it's definitely a favorite watering hole for people in the immediate area. the prices were a bit high for what we ordered especially since the food SUCKED. DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE TREK AND CRAZY PARKING GARAGE...

We came here to watch UFC 118, found it from yelp. It was a $10 cover, but happy hour drinks/food all night. Great service, $3 martinis along with bunch of other happy hour drinks. We ordered their 'small plates' which were huge! We got the kalua pig nachos, Cajun fries, and calamari. All were really good. The calamari's best I've ever had. This is a great place to catch UFC, so glad we found this place.

went here for dinner recently, and had an AMAZING time... with the exception of the waitress that failed to take our order so one of the bartenders ended up taking my party's order. he was super nice and checked in on us frequently. full bar = very happy. and the food is amazing. i'd recommend the potstickers, wings & sweet potato fries. the sauce that comes with the potstickers tastes like terriyaki, but a bit sweeter. great drinks, friendly people, music and sports. hungry downtowners should definitely come here and beat the crowds at restaurants like Epic -- especially on first friday.

I heart Hukilau. I am constantly coming here for business lunches much like the rest of the Downtown crowd. The food is delicious and consistent and the servers are experienced and well-trained. A few of my faves: Hukilau Burger- This burger is awesome. A little pricey but oh so worth it. Best burger in Downtown if you ask me. Juicy kobe beef, crunchy fried onions, buttery avocado, MmMMmmmm. It melts in your mouth. Prime Rib Chili- The best combo since pb & j. The chili is the perfect blend of spices and the juicy chunks of prime rib make it even more delectable. Asian Chicken Salad- When I'm on a healthy kick, this is my regular menu choice. The chicken, and dressing, and the little asian crunchies perfectly compliment each other and come together for a party in my mouth. Tomato Bisque Soup- The soup changes daily but when they have this one, order it. The consistency and flavor is spot on and really fills you up. Warm Vanilla Brioche Bread Pudding- I'm not a huge bread pudding fan, but this one is AHHHmazing. It's soft and moist and the vanilla sauce that it's drenched in makes me want to order a cup of it so I can drink it straight. I almost only come here during lunch but I did come once for breakfast and enjoyed it and I've also heard their pau hana is really good too. Give this place a shot if you're ever in the area just be warned- it is underground and their is no cell phone reception. It's actually a good excuse if you wanna take a long lunch and don't want your boss to bother you :)

My friend and I were wandering around looking for a good place to have an early dinner. He said to try her because he liked their burgers. When we first went down into the building, I was surprised to see where their location was. It was pretty empty and we had made it in time for happy hour. The food was good, but close to the end of our meal, they forgot about us. We had to wait a while to get our check as well as a container for our food to take home. If the service wasn't so slow I think I would go more often.

I typically think the food here is over priced for what you get, but for lunch last week I had the Hukimin Saimin...something like that...and it was surprisingly awesome for the price. The dashi had a good flavor and came put at a good temperature. The saimin is filled with ingredients just like a saimin should be. The meat stood put as it was prepared like kalua pig, and it was very tasty. The dumplings were also prepared differently then your "typical" pork filled dumpling. The seasoning that they used made a good, distinct flavor. Overall I was pleased about what I ordered, but the other times I have gone there it's been a crap shoot. It is a good business lunch place...

I've been here a couple times to watching UH Football games - nice crowd, good ambiance and good prices on food. I was concerned about parking but I've always found parking in the lot next door or you can park on the street One of my favorite things about this place is that it's underground and you sort of wouldn't even know it's there if you weren't going there - pleasantly surprised by how nice the place. The food was pretty good, I've only had a few appetizers there but I'll definitely be back throughout football season!

I used to go to the Hukilau over in Palo Alto, CA (this chain started in CA) and then it came back to Hawaii so it was weird to be in a Hukilau here. Anyway, ordered the kalua pig egg rolls and sweet potato fries for appetizers. The egg rolls were good, but only 4 halves came out, so it's hard to justify $8 on that. The sweet potato fries were kind of soggy (The Counter is Kahala has much better ones). I got the skirt steak salad with balsamic vinegar and olive oil as dressing. The skirt steak was delicious! Tender, juicy, teriyaki flavored, yum. The greens were your average mixed green bunch with a little red onion thrown in (which I don't like). I wish there was a little more to the salad, but the skirt steak was definitely great. I wasn't impressed with the table we got, the chairs were pretty beat up.

The vibe is pretty chill but the place needs a renovation for sure. The furniture is SUPER outdated, like early 90's status which really annoyed me for some reason. there was private party inside the restaurant so my friends and i sat in the outside lobby area which wasn't too bad. we peeked inside the private room and the light green walls looked terrible....just old old old. the food is pretty decent, i liked the bbq guava wings and the kobe burger was pretty delish. personally, if i had kobe beef, i wouldn't think to grind it up into a burger but that's innovation i guess? haha i enjoyed it, i won't lie :) the first waitress was super chill and on top of the service. the second one was meh. she took outr tickets to validate them and didn't being them back, we had to ask to get our tickets back...twice. grr. i would go back but only for happy hour.

Located in the lobby of the Executive Centre Hotel i downtown Honolulu, this place has certainly become a favorite lunch time and pau hana spot for me. Nice ambiance, tons of flat screen TVs to watch sports, and a simple menu of ono food...everything from salads, burgers, and sandwiches, to miso pork and chef's famous Hukilau Saimin...which is a winner. This is a popular place amongst the business crowd for lunch, so be sure to make reservations or get there early to ensure a seat. For the pau hana crowd, they have some great happy hour specials from 3:30-7:30 p.m. with discounts on wine and mixed drinks, tap beers, and food. Definitely worth a visit if you're hungry and in the downtown area.

    1) WORST coffee ever. Like burnt instant. Great way to start my day. Never again. 2) Waitress kept asking me if I was finished with my breakfast when I still had food on there. NO, dammit, if you see bacon on my plate, I'm not done. Finally one of the times she asked me, "Are you done with this?", I said yes and lost some bacon because I thought she was asking me about the check. Yes, I'm done with the check, NO, don't touch my bacon. 3) One Megatouch game eats quarters. Only put cash in there. The other one doesn't work at all. 4) This past week my spinach salad wasn't very good. It was oily and not very tasty.

Decided to go fo' broke at a co-worker's birthday lunch and ordered a burger with onion rings, sorry can't remember the name of it, but it had a special bbq sauce on it. We were warned that the food/service takes a while, and she wasn't kidding. There were quite a few large groups that were there when they first opened during a weekday. Our waiter was still committing to written "memory" the specials on the board in front, but was pretty personable and able to joke with us once he started work. We had to ask a few times for our food but they were all served at the same time, which was nice. Two people in our party shared a burger and salad, which turned out to be a smart idea. I ate my entire burger and most of my onion rings and suffered the kanak attack effects afterward, but it was well worth the effort ;) After a little over an hour (good thing the boss was with us!), we had to ask for the check - but it was brought quickly & processed by another waiter, before our own waiter even knew it. Previously I had the miso salmon plate, which was well prepared and healthy! Looks like they cater to the whole spectrum of eaters here - which I love! This place looks like it would be fun to hang out for happy hour after work, with darts, tv's everywhere and pau hana drink specials, and live music on certain nights - which I want to check out!

They catered food for my reception for my wedding and did a really good job. They were able to meet my budget and expectations. Jason was super helpful and was always very good at calling back and doing what ever it took to make us happy. Man when you order food for 30 guest its actually more like 60! Hawaiians sure must love to eat! Lol! Must of the food was great and some ehhh... The braised short ribs, steamed ginger fish, and fried rice was DELISHHHHH! The bar burgers were ehhh since a lot of us didn't like bleu cheese and that goes for the stuffed chucked breast and lobster wonton as well. The salad was yummmy too. Overall everyone really loved the food and jason's service skills was outstanding! Can't wait to try their other restaurant in san jose.

I have to say, this place is pretty busy. not sure if it is because of the location or the food. This is definitely a must try. During lunch hour, it is busy so the service can be alittle slow. if you are not tight on time, you should be fine. Miso butterfish.... that is all i have to say. Miso butterfish. yummy.... I should of ordered a side order of cesar salad because it looked delish... and also had room in my tummy for it after i finished my main course.... next time. The portions and the price is not too bad considering it is in the middle of down town. I will have to try the other dishes, but for now, i would say the food is thumbs up.

My boss took me here for lunch one time. I used to always pass it because our offices were located in the Executive Centre, but I never actually thought about going there to eat. After he took me there though, my perceptions were completely changed. I had the prime rib chili and it was probably the best chili I've ever had in my life. The texture from the meat was a completely new experience from the standard ground beef in most chilis. It was a little spicy, but not over powering also. My boss also got a burger which also looked good.

Hukilau, known for its restaurants in San Francisco, San Jose and Palo Alto, will open a new restaurant May 28 in downtown Honolulu. Based on my experiences with the existing three locations and knowing Kurt Osaki and the other owners, I predict success for the newest addition to the Hukilau family. Hukilau Sports Bar & Grill will be located in the Executive Centre Hotel. Chef Jason Takemura, formerly of Chai's Island Bistro, will be executive chef. The restaurant will celebrate the accomplishments of Hawai'i's world-class athletes by featuring Hawai'i sports memorabilia and a sports theme throughout the establishment. ESPN 1420 will broadcast its live shows from the restaurant. The new sports bar and grill will feature and promote live Hawaiian music with notable local entertainment performing at the new spot. Chef Takemura was executive chef of Chai's Island Bistro from July 2003 through the end of 2006. He was previously in the kitchens of several California restaurants, including Roy's, San Luis Obispo's Seven Hands on Higuera, Monterey's Montrio Bistro and Pebble Beach's Inn at Spanish Bay. In its efforts to promote the aloha spirit, Hukilau has for the past five years hosted an annual poke festival and spam musubi eating contest at its San Francisco location. They will continue that tradition by sponsoring a poke contest in the Honolulu restaurant in which the winners from the Bay Area contest will challenge local contestants.

I had the mauna kea burger (has blue cheese). I dont really eat burgers, but this one was perfect. I would come back again. They also had creme brule for $2! We got two. I believe you can get parking validation, $4 for 3 hours. Went for lunch just as all the business types were coming in. Took an hour to get our food, but they were completely slammed so I understood. I wanna come back for happy hour.

Had pupu's and some drinks here tonight. The food was decent, not award winning but it worked. Actually the sliders were really good. The poke was ok. My friends g-friend had the brownie sundae and that was good too. We also ordered the pork chops and I was little worried because Side Street Inn popped into my mind and I figured I had just ruined it for myself. They turned out pretty good, I would order them again. I will agree that the service is a little slow, but I am patient so it doesn't bother me to much gotta remember you arent in San Fran anymore.

One word = EXCELLENT! It's about time this locally owned restaurant opened here in Hawaii. Great choice in choosing the Chef - the food was outstanding. The service was superb (of course, I was with someone who personally knew the chef, but nonetheless, they were all very nice). The menu is a nice blend of local favorites, with flair. Prices were good, atmosphere was nice. I would've given it 5 stars - but the minus one star is for location/parking. Executive Center in downtown Honolulu is a tough place for non-downtown folks. But it is definitely worth the visit.

Was out here for a business lunch. For those of you who are familiar with Hukilau's Bay Area restaurants (SF, Palo Alto, San Jose) - this is not your old Hukilau! The Good: Nice atmosphere - pretty plushy. An upgrade from the Bay Area joints. Good place to have a working lunch - not too loud, and enough privacy. The service was good. The Not-So-Hot: If you're looking for the Hawaii Hukilau transplant experience, you probably won't find it here. The menu was almost unrecognizable - both from the food and price perspective. We ended up having Italian food here which was kind of amusing, but honestly, it was a little disappointing (more because it's Hukilau! Not because of the food - which was pretty good). Conclusion: If you're going because this was a fav in the Bay Area, disassociate all prior experiences and you'll be ok. Otherwise, a good experience. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Update: 3/2010 We came by here to watch one of the Final 4 March Madness showdowns during happy hour. Their happy hour is pretty good - martini's are $3 and they have a couple of appetizers 1/2 off. They weren't very busy when we arrived so the waitstaff was very attentive. Right after we managed to get our orders, there was a pipe issue and they shut down the kitchen (until the next day) so that was kind of a bummer. I ordered an AMAZING shiso (I think they spelled it chizo) leaf mojito - it was possibly the best mojito I've had (and I have defintitely had my share). I will definitely be back for more mojitos...

11/30/07: Breakfast meeting - having lived in San Francisco for 6 years and visited their original location, I've been curious about their Honolulu location since it opened. To be frank, I've been perplexed and couldn't find it until this morning. I work around the corner (Hotel and Alakea) and heard it was at the corner of Bishop and Hotel, but all I could find was the Verizon storefront. Anyways, if you haven't figured it out, the restaurant is in the basement (very tough location from a retailing perspective). I didn't have anything to eat but really enjoyed the Illy coffee. Finally, another place that I can add to my list of establishments that don't serve (watered down) Kona coffee. Lots of plasma TVs around, this place must be buzzing during the UH games and happy hour, I hope the poor location doesn't kill the business (this is the fourth restaurant in this space).

Let me just say the have some bad management and I wouldn't recommend them for big groups. I have been to the other locations in the bay area and I recommend those. But the Hukilau Honolulu is a big thumbs down.
