ordered my usual standard of vietnamese which i use to compare restaurants since i'm not a pho eater - bbq pork and spring roll vermicelli. bottom line is i didn't like it. too much mint and the fish sauce was kinda bland and spicy. they put chili pepper flakes in their sauce which to some might be plus but i don't like spicy so this really turned my off. workers were very nice, meal came out fairly quickly, and the price was excellent (for me and the bf it was $12.50! can't beat that!) but my favorite dish had too much spice for my taste so i won't be returning.

We really enjoyed hong cafe. Found it by accident and hasn't had pho in a long time so gave it a shot. It was delicious. Pho was great and BBQ pork was tender and spiced really well. All the veggies etc for the pho were fresh and full of flavor. Service was super nice and pretty quick, and the prices were very good, abt $7 for each entree we ordered. Very casual place, just hole in the wall Chinatown cafe feel. Thank you hong cafe for a memorable lunch!

I don't know what they put in this pho, but it's the best pho I have ever had, period.

I really like this place. I actually give it closer to 4 stars... but not quite. My really good friend and I used to eat here. USED to cuz I don't see her too much nowadays ;(... but ANYWAY... Vietnamese food.... it's yummy. For some reason I ALWAYS ordered the BBQ beef. It came w/ rice and that's it, but it was so delicious. We always ordered the spring rolls too. They were pretty tasty also. My friend used to order different things... the last thing I remembered her ordering was a stew type soup thing which she liked. BUT... here's the best thing about this place.... they serve ice cold coconut juice!!!! WITH REAL PIECES O' COCONUT!!!! mmmm.... it's so sweet and yummy! Anyway, try it out... if not for the food... for the coconut juice ;)

I've been a regular customer for years food is great and the rice noodles is nice and firm. Most places noodles will break apart.

I love Vietnamese food! But this place is horrible for my stomach. I still don't know what's wrong with me but I believe I got food poisoning from here. I had summer rolls, spring rolls, combination pho, iced coffee and lemonade. I thought the food was fine. The lemonade sucked but overall it's wasn't that bad. Less than an hour after eating my stomach turned for the worst. My stomach has been upset for 4 days now. No tea or meds are helping. Looking back, I did notice that the dishes had something still on it. It's in Chinatown so it's not the cleanest looking establishment. My mom also got what I had and she ate the exact same thing. She recovered quicker than me. We are guessing it could be either too much MSG, unsanitary food handling, dishes aren't clean or bad meat. My sister, her boyfriend and his family enjoy eating here. So I'm super disappointed that this place made me sick on my first visit. I will not be back and I do not recommend this place.

Funny I wanted to write an update but what could I add to what my experience was the past times I've been here. Pretty much the same they are pretty enthusiastic when I walk into the place I really don't know why it isn't always crowded as I think the Pho here is great. I ordered the same as always the Combo Pho but this time with the meat in a separate plate so far I haven't been disappointed here easy to find a seat, quick service flavorful soup lots of veggies all for $6.50 can't complain I should try some of their other menu items one of these days...

Hong Cafe is a little whole in a wall restaurant in Chinatown. I typically go here to get my morning Vietnamese coffee before I go to work (I think their's is one of the best!). It used to be $2.50 but they raised it to $3 which I don't mind cause you get a pretty good size unlike some other places I know. The food is pretty good here too. I actually haven't tried their pho but their spring roll cold noodle dishes and bbq chicken and shredded pork w/rice were delish! The prices are cheap and the owner is super nice and always has a smile on his face =)

Quiet little place, very casual atmosphere with traditional Vietnamese music playing in the background. My brother & I come here often but usually trust his more discerning tastes when it comes to Vietnamese food. We each have our own rating bar for what's good and what's not. With me it usually has to pass whether or not my tummy/intestines are happy...and it's always been happy! Often my friends would ask me which place is good to eat for Vietnamese food and it's usually Pho. I'd have to say again, each place has their own unique taste and flavor of their broth; you just have to try and see if it's good for you. This place has been around for quite some time...I think at least ten years or more. I have not tried everything but for what I have tried it's always been above average. Recommended: Pho, lemon grass chicken, bbq pork plate, sandwich, spring rolls.

My new favorite go-to spot for pho and Vietnamese food! I got tired of eating overpriced, so-so pho from those restaurants along the main streets (i.e. Kapiolani Blvd) and wanted to try something better so after scouring yelp reviews, I finally decided to try Hong Cafe, which is truly a gem. Quiet cafe with a great owner/host who is very fast to help and very nice. The prices are fabulous ($5.50 for a medium bowl of pho) and I loved that the veggies were super fresh and very, very clean. I also appreciated that the lime pieces were cut to the right shape for squeezing. The pho arrived fresh and piping hot and I liked that the broth was flavorful and definitely not greasy. Portions are very generous and the quality of the food is very good. I'm glad that I only ordered the medium bowl because afterward I was so full that I went home and took a nap--food coma at its finest!! I love that Hong Cafe offers the full array of sauces, including Sriracha, the chili garlic sauce, and the oily chili sauce. Yummy!! I will definitely be back!!

I hope Sara Bareilles really wants to see me be brave because the journey to this humble abode can be a bit intimidating. Walking through the less than hip, sketchier areas of downtown hopping over numerous homeless, passing daytime working street walkers, and the random dope dealer at park on the corner lies Hong Cafe can be a bit daunting. Just around the corner was the former location of Otto Cake, where the owner was roughed up. But once through the doors, you will find an quaint vietnamese restaurant. On this rather chilly (60 deg F) Hawaiian morning, a large bowl of pho sounds great. Service is on point. Fresh bean sprouts, basil leaves, & culantro greet meet me almost immediately. Within minutes, my bowl of pho follows. Clean and clear broth, yet still rich flavors greet my lips. YES! Rare steak is grissle free and broth is piping hot. Pictures do not do this large bowl justice, I was surprised how much fit in this rather small looking "large" bowl. It's like the clown car in the circus. Pulling out neverending strands of rice noodles, steak, beef balls, tripe, & tendon. All this for $7 tax included? Winning! Now just gotta be brave and get to the car.

Grew up eating at Hong's Cafe! Never fail us at all! Glad he is still around. The Pho there is sooooo tasty and the condiments w/ the fresh chili peppers and shrimp paste work wonders for us Lao peeps! We love to adorn our Pho with just about everything haha! Prices are awesome and the service is great! The owner himself speaks both Lao and Vietnamese. Every time when I'm in Hawaii, this is the only Pho place I will go to =) Yum Yum Yum... Thanks for still staying in Business Mr. Hong!

Its really good for the price. About $6 for a regular size bowl. It comes with all the fixings and sauces. Note- If you like strong iced coffee this is your place.

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes.
