I love their Wonton Mein. OMG the broth is everything for the dish! so balanced! Will definitely buy again.

I used to like this place and would go from time to time for the last 20 years. It was good before, but things have changed. The quality of their food is declining and I've heard it in inconsistent because they have one decent chef and one bad one. The service is probably the worst I've ever experienced. I feel like an unwanted relative who's inconveniencing them by eating there. Not one, "Thank You", or any type of courteous gesture. No smile, nothing. I thought maybe it was a bad day so I went again yesterday. Same results. They brought me a dish I didn't order and the owner looked at me like it was my fault - he didn't believe me. After finding out it was for another table, no apology. If you are in the business of serving customers, showing appreciation, courtesy and respect is Customer Service 101. Maybe they make too much money and have too many customers so they want to lose some? Well they lost me. For their sake, I hope they turn things around.

I've been here twice. The first time I dined in and the second time I had take out. I'll address these separately. Dine in: It was my first time here and I heard a lot of good things about this place. I was with a big group so we ordered a bunch of menu items that came in decent portions. The food came out pretty quickly Fried Rice: it was better than okay, but not the best fried rice I've had. Salt and Pepper Wings: I loved these! The flavor was great! Orange Chicken: okay, i've had better Roast Duck: delicious Beef with Broccoli: it was okay Shrimp Canton: very delicious! Salt and Pepper Shrimp: loved it! Ma Po Tofu: i really liked this The service wasn't that great that's the reason for the 3 stars. The waiter never came to refill water so we had to get up and initiate it. The waiter only came to take order and to drop off food. Take out: The food took a lot longer. I ordered Beef with broccoli, Shrimp Fu Yong, rice cakes, and fried rice. It was great just the wait was long. Overall a good place. I'll eat here again.

Been here twice and ugh ... food is greasy or cold ... not good. Service sucks ... not very friendly or helpful.

Good food, large portions, but mediocre customer service. The workers make it seem that they don't care, the only time I hear them say "thank you" or "you're welcome" is when you pay.

  • Ilike D.

Food was good once every one in our party was served .With a party of 5 you don't leave a customer waiting while everyone else eats. Service sucked, the rest of my party was halfway through by the time my meal arrived.

I wasn't impressed with the flavors or quality of the food. It's not BAD,but nothing spectacular, and parking sucks.

So the food here is pretty good. Service is quick and the people here are friendly. We got the roast duck cake noodle, honey walnut shrimp, and green onion and ginger with beef. The cake noodle was good but we would liked to have more meat on the duck. The honey walnut shrimp had really good flavor and they were plump. The plate had a lot of walnuts which was nice. The ginger and green onion with need had a really nice flavor. But I felt they should have put more beef. Anyway if you want pretty good Chinese food then Golden a Duck will do the trick.

The best thing i can say about this place is that they serve green tea with your meal. I had chicken with oyster sauce on cake noodle. Chicken was too salty and overcooked. Noodles drowned in brown salty shlop. I envy the earlier reviewer who was able to vomit in the bushes infront of the restaurant. That would have saved me 6 hours of indigestion. Waiters not friendly. The place is not very clean. There is lots of good chinese food in honolulu - just not here.

I've been coming here for years with my fam bam and I can tell you it's an A-OK Chinese restaurant. LOCATION Across from Zippy's Wisteria. Parking is behind the restaurant - you enter on the side street that's right after Golden Duck. The whole place is jammin' during lunch every time I go. FOOD Cheap, fast, and decent. My favorite dish is the Roast Duck Noodle Soup, which is also their Tuesday special (50 cents off the regular price or something like that). I always like to substitute the noodles for mai fan (thin rice noodles). If I were to rate the Duck Noodle by itself, I would give 4 stars. I love the tasty broth and generous pieces of duck.. YUM! However....there have been two times where I came across a tiny bug/worm still on the veggies or floating in my soup O_O My stomach turns, I lose my appetite for a moment, and I take that piece of veggie out with the little bug. It makes me question if they thoroughly wash their vegetables at all, especially since it was more than once that this has happened! And this is why I can't fully love this place. I'm all for extra protein but bugs in food is so disgusting!!! :( I still come back because my love for their Duck Noodle! SERVICE Not bad. The food always comes out super fast, which may explain the not so thoroughly washed veggies??

Finishing a night job and the boss says he wants to eat dinner. I agree and off we go. Headed towards Ala Moana when he pulls over and we end up at Golden Duck. We sit down and order. The food was pretty good. The cake noodle was pretty dope. Oyster sauce chicken cake noodle was good. The roast duck was good too. Finished the order with some shrimp omelet that I killed! Pretty good food. Good enough that I finished a full pot of tea. I wish I could have ordered some other items to test their menu but my dining companions are a little bit picky. I guess I'll have to come back again to see what else they got that's killer.

Golden Duck is an old time favorite of many in Honolulu. My mom was craving Chinese food and I suggested Golden Duck. I haven't been here in 30+ years, and was glad that I went to eat here! Here's what we had to eat: Clams with Black Bean Sauce: B+ Duck chow fun noodles: B+ Ginger Chicken: B+ Squid with sweet sour mustard cabbage: B- Walnut Shrimp: B+ Fried Chicken Wings: B+ Hot & Sour Soup: B+ The food came out pretty fast after ordering. The service was "typical" Chinese restaurant service! They only had two servers working the floor, so I had to often hellp myself to what I needed (extra napkins, bowls, chopsticks, serving spoons, etc). No complaints! Food Grade: B+ Service Grade: B Worth the Money Grade: B Oveall Impression: B/B+

Golden duck is another one of hawaii's Chinese restaurant institutions. The food is always great, the restaurant is always busy, and always a line waiting for take out. Consistent taste of the best duck noodle in town. Parking is tight and expected to be so

Golden Duck has been my favorite Chinese restaurant for years. If I am ever hungry for Sam See Mein, Chow Fun, or Wor Won Ton Mein, this is the place I go to. It is down home cooking at a reasonable price. The staff is friendly and service is fast. While I usually come here to order take-out noodles, the dine-in service is fast and yummy. I love the Salt & Pepper Shrimp in shell, Beef with Asparagus, Pot Roast Chicken, Tofu with Black Mushroom, Crispy Gau Gee, Kau Yuk, and Boneless Minute Chicken. The Hot and Sour Soup is extra yummy as well as their Sam See Wor Mai Fun. When I am feeling under the weather, their Jook is just what the doctor ordered. I also come here to order food for parties and pot lucks. The kitchen will make dishes from ingredients you give them, such as crab, whole fish, and lobster. This is also a great place to have a small party of 10 or less to celebrate an event or just get together. The only draw back is that the parking is inadequate, so I either come here to dine early or late or practice the tag team take-out pick-up where one person double parks while the other person runs in to pick-up the order. However, I obviously don't let the parking situation stop me because this is my number one place for Chinese food!

  • Nadine J.

Most of the food here is good and your topical Chinese food. I love the steam buns and the walnut shrimp, yummy. My family comes here for get togethers because the food is good and cheap. The location is also central so everyone can meet in the middle. The staff service is ok. The perking lot only has a few stalls but there is street parking too. All in all it is good Chinese food and a good location.

  • Audra T.

The food is great, but their customer service is just okay. You order you food, they bring your food. If you need any thing beyond that, you're going to have to chase them.

  • Nancy Y.

I'm so sad. I always boast how they have the best fried rice. Today I brought home my long awaited order of fried rice.....it had absolutely NO FLAVOR. My other dish of sour cabbage with pork was fine. I was going to order food for a party tomorrow night.....not now, with their inconsistencies!

There are a lot of Chinese restaurants in Honolulu so the competition is quite keen. The Cantonese cooking style is of course the predominent one so those specializing in Cantonese have quite a few competitors in Hawaii. Golden Duck (King St) has been in this location for many, many years, they took over the space once used by Bakery Kapiolani. Their food is typical local style Cantonese, the pricing is average, the food is generally pretty average, the portions are average, their service definitely above average, cheerful friendly servers not typical for many Chinese restaurants. The crispy gau gee is great, the cake noodles are ok. If there ever was an average benchmark Cantonese restaurant in Hawaii, Golden Duck is the one. 2.5 stars.

Been here a few times before. I have to say this time around its been really good. The salt and pepper shrimp, oh my tummy is happy! Great workers, very family friendly and I appreciate that a whole lot. I plan on taking my own family here next time :)

Golden Duck- I am surprised at myself for not reviewing this place sooner. I go here often enough as it is just down the street from me and tight after the light at a bus stop. So easy at the corner of King Zippy's and 7/11 and Jack in the Box. I can understand that other commenter's leave some mixed messages. The décor is tacky- not the worse I have ever seen but tacky. Not in the cute storybook story of Tacky a penguin that gets hunted by polar bears- and the reader thinks to him or herself Penguins live in the south pole and polar bears live on the north pole- why is a bear hunting on the wrong side of the earth- sometimes we wonder - are these decorations on the wrong side of the world too- they were made in China- maybe they should have kept them there??? Yes, every inch of the place has either weird decorations or old style tables and chairs and recycled McD bench tables from 1940 because they were thrown away before they had all of the good years still left in them. I do not know what the need for every inch of every space having items on them- pictures, cards, free McD toys from the happy meals, and stuff that I don't recognize. Why? I don't know- but if Jon Taffer (Bar Rescue) ever visits I hope I will see it. "CLOSE THIS PLACE DOWN NOW! THE KITCHEN IS CLOSED!" I don't think it will happen but it would be cool to see him rip into the clutter seen all around. (I like Taffer and watch the show and would love to see him just go crazy to everywhere he goes here in HI and just being him on TV.) Each and every time I have gone there- there are daily specials. Sometimes it is something that really doesn't interest me and sometimes it sounds really good. Usually the specials are $.50 or a dollar cheaper than a comparable plate so I figure too- heck? I think I'll try it. If it is a cake noodle special, like beef broccoli or orange chicken or something else on cake noodle - then I know it will be good. They really do cake noodle well- and I know I can't make cake noodle at all (no idea but I really like it). There is an ok diner plate. Good mix with normal noodle and chicken. Not the best and by far not the worse. If you have to grab and go- then ordering this for take out is just fine and really surprisingly quick. Beef Broccoli, Mongolian Beef and Seafood Mix (scallops and shrimp are good) are my favorites on cake noodle especially. I also like the Chinese noodles but I tend to stay away from the soups from here- I've seen different dishes that other tables have ordered and I just didn't find it great or appealing. Just my opinion. Good full menu that is great for getting something for everyone in the family or pot luck. a ok rating is just fair. It's not great it is not bad. Parking is mostly street as I believe most people just walk or are local.

Way too much MSG! OMG! Service is really poor, don't think they know how to smile or acknowledge a thank you, the older brother of the two owner/managers is the worst! He looks at you like he's doing you a favor and when you say thank you, silence! Jerk no wonder the Kahala store shut down, they don't stand for that on the East side!

Fair Chinese food...good prices, quick service, good location. Crispy gaugee very good, hot and freshly made to order. Ginger cold chicken and the house fried rice is one of our favorites.

The food and service at the Golden Duck are outstanding! I ordered the Chicken with Oyster Sauce that just blew my mind, the meat was very tender and flavorful and the skin was cooked to a delicious crisp. It was all bathed in a savory oyster sauce that made it oh so juicy! I also ordered the Honey Glazed Shrimp which was EPIC. Large shrimps that were plump and perfectly cooked, they literally snap in your mouth in a delicious dressing served on a bed of candied walnuts! The portions here are large, and the service is ultra speedy, mind you it isn't all that personable, but for an east coaster living on Oahu I found the prompt service to be refreshing! So if you want fresh quality Chinese drop the Panda Express drive through and give this place a shot!

I ordered my family 8 duck noodle to take home for dinner last week. Spent nearly $100. The duck was freezer burned and the noodles and soup had a old favor to it. I added the one star only because it's close to my renovation project that I doing. Terrible to use old food I should get my money back. I'll bring back the take out. HaHa

I will give you fair warning and don't say i told you so, but if you ever eat in this establishment DO NOT USE THE RESTROOM HERE!!! I will tell you this, everything that I ate came out and then some after taking a whiff of this despicable place that they call a restroom. Lisa Blair of The Exorcist has nothing on me after inhaling that disgusting smell of their hellhole. I literally ran out of the restroom as fast as Carl Lewis and I found the nearest bush and hurled a water fountain of Roast Duck, Ginger Chicken, and Fried Rice all over that poor bush and it looked like i poured Jook all over that bush! I was actually tearing up and thought my eyes were gonna pop out of my head and really thought my head was gonna do a 360 like The Excorcist except without the split pea soup. So if you are reading this owners of Golden Duck. With all those noodles and Roast Duck you serve each and every day, go to the nearest church and get a priest to bless that bathroom because as long as I live. I will never ever eat at a place with a bathroom as filthy and rotten as that!! I still get nightmares just thinking how disgusting it looked. I'm giving you fair warning my fellow Yelpers, if you eat there, buy yourself some Depends and a Gas Mask...

Good for lunch, affordable and decent and large portions. Good for lunch, not sure about dinner. Chinese in HI just seems so bland, but maybe my pallet is tired of food on boat for 2 weeks before it gets to the island.

My family & I have been coming here for years to celebrate occasions! The main server has been here for years, & is quick to bring you water & take your order. We normally order the cake noodles & gau gee, ginger chicken, sweet sour cabbage, & shrimp w/black bean sauce. ALL very good choices. The restaurant is very small, & the parking lot is just as small. Street parking is your next bet if it's full! I'd definitely recommend coming here if your in town & want a family style lunch/dinner!

Man, this place has been here, forever. Good, solid Island-style Chinese food, and good service. Everything we tried was tasty. Started with the chicken and watercress soup. That's not on the menu, but any good Chinese restaurant can substitute meats in a dish. The regular fried rice was very good, with lots of char siu. Stuffed duck was not as good as Happy Days, but not bad, and you can get a decent portion for a third the price. Steamed chicken was so incredibly tender and tasty. We had the New Year's special jai, which was just like my mom used to make. Very tasty and complex. We also had a fish dish, which was not memorable, but tasty, nonetheless. Really reasonable prices.

Came here since it was close to my condo. It took a bit of time to get my order. Tried my sesame chicken dish and I got to say that it was a bit soggy and not crispy at all. Haven't tried their other food so can't say too much. At least the chicken was of decent quality. I would try somewhere else if you want to have sesame chicken.

Look any local family has been to Golden Duck at least once after a family function or for one in any case. The food is good, the service fast, and family style so its not exactly small portions! Its not the prettiest place to eat, nor the most organized, but its a family owned Chinese restaurant thats been around for forever, thats got to mean something. Food: I love their beef with sweet sour cabbage. Hands down one of my favorite Chinese dishes there is. Tonight we got beef with sweet sour cabbage, beef chow fun (dry), ginger chicken, shrimp with black bean sauce, & lup chong. Can you ever go wrong with some lup chong? No. My dad is a huge ginger chicken fan and never grumbles when we eat it here (and he's a critic). The shrimp with black bean sauce was a hit too. Price: Ok, altogether I'd say it came out to about $60-70. That seems like a huge price to pay but it fed 6 people. It's pricey but thats considering its meant to be family style not singular portions. So, great place to come too when you're coming with a decent amount of people. Average price per dish is about $9. If you're going family style rice is ala carte. Parking: There aren't many stalls in their parking lot. Its not a tight fit though like some parking lots. However, if you come at the wrong, or rather right time, it'll be war trying to grab a stall. There is street parking though. Only down fall to this joint is the lack of parking considering most people that come, come with a tribe, and they don't car pool either! Lol

Ordered the chicken cake noodle. Watery, tasteless, and the noodles were not crispy. Plus what really got me was the attitude of one of the waiters (Kook with a eighties style hair cut). A surly bad attitude will make you lose customers. He even acted with the customers over the phone poorly. Looks like a typical semi dirty cheap restaurant. First and last time i'm going to darken their doorways.

It's still one of my fav places to eat. If you're eating at the restaurant, very good portions, great variety. The quality is excellent for the price. The air conditioner wasn't working very well the last time i was there. When it is working, it is for me one of the main reasons why I go there. You never realize how important good air conditioning is until it's gone....(sad 'sniff')

The service is excellent dont mistake this location for the kahala nightmare i had lamb stew but wanted lamb curry so they made me custom lamb curry and it was excellent they always checked if we doing good and kept my water filled i dont eat shrimp but the honey walnut shrimp here looks out of this world any restruant dont make every dish good so i try out more then 1 before i give a bad rep this place gets my vote for taste and service i never used the bathroom so cant rate that

A family favorite! I've been coming to this place for at least 13 years. They never seem to remember me, which I think is odd since I must have been here hundreds of times, but perhaps they're just so professional that I can't even understand it. I don't love everything they have, and their service/cleanliness could use improvement, but they're consistent and their prices are good and the portions are generous. Best items: Rainbow Tofu Soup Seafood Cake Noodle Duck Wo Mein Oyster Sauce Choi Sum Fried Rice Gau Gee I don't always think of this place first when I want Chinese food, but when I pass by it on King Street, I definitely miss it and make a point to tell whoever's in the car with me how good it is.

Great tasting casual Chinese food. The service was very fast during our sit down dinner on a Sunday evening. Parking lot is a little small though. There is some street parking in the area. Prices are very reasonable for good quality dishes. I recommend this restaurant for quick casual dining at a reasonable price.

I wouldn't call this a 'hole-in-a-wall' place, since it's a free standing building on a very busy street. They have gift cards so...I don't know why people are calling it that. I had a pen and paper with me so I wrote out what my family of five wanted to order, just in case the waiter(ess) couldn't understand my English. It turned out the waiter spoke English well, so...you don't have to worry about that here. Prices were low but I do know that the seafood in Chinese restaurants nearby (Lobster King) are lower. I suggest the honey walnut shrimp and peking duck buns! Skip the chow-fun. We ordered the cake noodle but it never came. We were charged for it, but they were very nice about taking it off. Too bad though, I really wanted to try their specialty. Oh, and they give you the entire bottle when you order soda.

This is my go-to take out for Chinese. It's very convenient because I can just call in my order when I'm done with work and by the time I grab my things and drive there, my food is ready.place an order and stop by on my way home. It usually only takes them 10 minutes for my food. The food here is very consistent. I usually order their Roast Duck on Cake Noodle (the cake noodle is very tasty), Pork Ong Choy with Ham Ha sauce (stinky but yummy), Scallop Soup (very refreshing), and Walnut Shrimp (what's not to like about shrimp?). The price is very reasonable. Each dish is around $10. Fast, Convenience, Tasty, and Reasonably Price, what more do you want from a Chinese Restaurant? This is why it's my go-to take out.

  • Yung V.

I always come here to get my Chinese Cuisine fix - ordering myself Chicken Oyster Sauce Cake Noodle, Honey Walnut Shrimp, and some Crispy Gaugee. It's the ONLY place I go to order me some awesome Cake Noodle! The owner Aaron is very nice. Always personable, always checks to see how you are doing, and is just an all around great guy. One thing you do have to keep in mind when coming to this place is that, it is a "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant in Hawaii. So the place may not look that attractive but the food is GREAT!

While on the prowl for a late night dinner, BF and I decided to pick up some takeout from Golden Duck. Since they recently opened up a new restaurant in Kahala, we figured there must be something good about the food, right? Boy, were we wrong! We ordered the beef fried rice, orange chicken, and crispy gau gee. The portions were pretty large, but that couldn't make up for the fact that the food was so bad! Fried rice was so bland. The orange chicken looked promising at first, but tasted like it had been sitting on a hot pan all day. Some of the pieces were so tough that they were literally inedible. Unfortunately, the crispy gau gee was only marginally better. I hate to waste food, so I plan on trying to doctor up the fried rice for another meal, but the chicken and gau gee are unsalvageable. $33 (w/tip) later, I have an upset stomach, and a lot of food in the trash. It is possible that I simply caught Golden Duck at the wrong time, but there are so many better places for Chinese food in Hawai'i, my stomach would never forgive me if I returned!

We ordered at least 8-9 different dishes: Shrimp snap peas(very good), Shrimp fried rice and reg rice, eggplant stuffed with pork, ground beef with tofu, beef noodles, gau gee, pork chops, duck, and something chicken? I didn't have the beef, duck, chicken or pork, but from what i gathered, my friends enjoyed it. The fried rice actually had some taste and it wasn't very oily. There were two of us ladies and six men. I don't know how, but we even took 2 containers of leftovers home. So, there was plenty of food to go around. I would like to go back to try the cake noodles!

This place is pretty good, a little salty on the food which I'm not suppose to eat :P. I'm not a picky eater, so i'm down to eat whatever. Parking is great and really easy to find. I'll come by again.

I heard from a few co-workers that Golden Duck serves some pretty yummy Chinese food but I never really got a chance to order anything from there because of my guy. The BF was always reluctant to try out this place because the name seemed so cliche and it just doesn't look too appealing from the outside. I guess that proverbial saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" applies to Golden Duck because it surprisingly serves modest and tasty Chinese fare. Not saying that it's in the category of "Oh-my-god this is f*cking delicious!!!" but it's not in "WTF am I eating?" category either. We got a chance to taste one of Golden Duck's dishes this Memorial Day when a friend brought some cake noodles and gau gee to our barbeque. We had a small sample of the dish and the BF and I were a bit incredulous when we heard it was from Golden Duck because it was actually pretty tasty. So, last night I suggested we try out this place since it was close by and he surprisingly agreed. (I think he just wanted to avoid the tantrum that was about to occur because I was not feeling too bueno and I was hungry... smart guy). We ordered shrimp won ton mein, beef with broccolli, minute chicken, and fried rice... all of which were tasty and delicious. I know the BF was pretty happy because he practically inhaled the shrimp won ton mein and he was more than happy to pack the leftovers for lunch the next day. So definitely give this place a shot despite it's lackluster exterior and cliched restaurant name because it actually serves pretty decent Chinese food. I'm pretty sure many of us have had better but for the price and the location, this place is good. Not great but good. As for the cockroaches, I haven't seen any in the dishes that I've tried, so until that day comes I'll be more than happy to plunk down some change to try out more dishes at Golden Duck.

Typical Chinese Cuisine- Served relatively fast, relatively late and relatively accurate. **Its funny how every Chinese restaurant has the same Lunch and Dinner plates- like they all had a meeting and came to some binding agreement not to variate. Our visit was good. Ordered Chicken wings which were hot and fresh (but salty!), and on special. Ordered Pork and Watercress soup- which was filled with really top notch ingredients. Treated ourselves to Black bean Crab but got Clams instead! We reluctantly accepted the clams cause we were hungry. Would go back cause its close to the house and open pretty late... Just gonna be clear-er with my order next time

I'm not sure why, but I seem to end up here relatively a lot when one of my friends wants to get dinner. I always feel uncomfortable sitting here, most likely because it's never just the two of us. And it's not just when we're placed at one of the round tables. Last time, it was three guys and one girl (me, duh) in a booth. I think we ordered five or six entrees. The table became crowded, fast. For a moment there, my plate was strategically placed on my lap LOL. As of my last visit, I'm really unsure about the prices here. There was a big discrepancy between what I thought we'd pay and what we actually paid. Were there specials going on? I wouldn't know, since our servers aren't communicative (to give them the benefit of the doubt, I'll assume it's a language barrier). Overall, I like the shrimp, the noodles and the duck (with the buns). Portions aren't very big (ideal for three, at the most), so I think I'm fortunate to have always gone with polite people who eat their fair share ;-)

I know for a fact that chinese restaurants in CA(or China for that matter) do not resemble food in Golden Duck. Food there is much more flavorful without all the oil and grease that seem to predominate chinese food locally(and friends from CA confirmed it). Golden Duck is the place to go if you like grease, grease and more grease, tons of MSG and generic flavor that you can find in food court Chinese restaurants. Everything I have tried there was gross to my taste buds but you like oily and gross, its a free country

To me this place has the best won ton mins in the islands, the soup is so flavorful yet so basic, what I enjoy most are the noodles, again so simple but the texture and flavor are just so right, the won tons are again are so light and melt in your mouth if that's actually possible but to me that's what it feels like. The place isn't the nicest and the service is pretty typical but to me it's all about the flavor of the food, as with most Chinese restaraunts the price is right too. Try adding a lot of white pepper too, love what that stuff does to enhance the flavor.

had dinner with our golf group last nite. Thought we would try this place instead our usual place in Waipahu. Missed a couple of the dishes we normally ordered but the alternatives were all quite tasty. Salt and Pepper Squid was outstanding and the Harm Ha Unchoi was a welcome addition. There was a lot to eat and the food came out pretty fast. Price was only slightly higher than what we usually pay in Waipahu.

So~ not good... We ordered : -Mapo Tofu- not good. very bland -Shrimp/vegetable with cake noodles- was ok... should've ordered it with the black bean sauce -Honey Walnut Shrimp- LOOKED good.. but so~ not. It tasted like there was mayo in it. - Chicken Fried Rice- not good

Dishes are hit or miss. Lemon chicken + salt n pepper porkchops are pretty tasty. This location is a bit dirty compared to the new kahala spot. Water cups + plates look old and jaded. Needs a new look.

Mushy har gau (shrimp dumpling) with the shrimp all in pieces, mushy steamed dim sum. Not a fan. Liked that there were mini bowls off of the dim sum menu (won ton min). Prompt service (even though there were only a few people in the restaurant that afternoon), excellent.

This place is an old standby. For the price you can't go wrong. Try their Wor Gau Gee Mein. The Gau Gee are huge and has lots of flavor.

Been here twice now...on a recent trip back home, our party ordered beef with sin choy, cake noodles with beef broccoli, salt & pepper shrimp, clams with black bean sauce, and boneless minute chicken. was all delicious, better than some of the other Cantonese places in town like Moanalua's Wah Kung. parking is a challenge around the dinner hour; you may have to park a few blocks away and walk as the small parking lot tends to fill up quickly.

I don't understand why this place is so crowded all the time.. First, I ordered honey walnut chicken, which is usually a pretty decent dish for Chinese restaurants in Honolulu. The Golden Duck walnut chicken was inedible. I'm one of those people who usually isn't very picky, so when I say inedible, I mean, it didn't taste like food. It was like soggy, rubbery chunks of... I can't even think of a proper word, because dog food has better texture. I complained and got the "lunch special" instead, which was broth with orange-flavor-slathered pork ribs that were both mediocre. Am I ordering the wrong thing or else why do people continue to go to this place? I mean sure, its cheap, but so is McDonald's and the McTeriyaki burger rocks this place.

The roach story review disturbs me but I have yet to find any little roaches in any of my food, so I will probably continue coming here since it is just around the corner. I usually order soft gau gee mein since that is my favorite food in the world. It's pretty good, and the prices are okay. The service is always quick. I was in and out within five minutes.

I'm generally not a chinese food fan but when I do have the cravings for grease with sauce I come here. I like the cake noodles, salt and pepper shrimp (heads on), and the dinner plate (fried rice, sweet sour spareribs, cold ginger chicken, beef broccoli, and crispy gau gee). The portions are generous so you get your moneys worth. Like most asian eateries, don't come here expecting smiling servers cause you wont find that here. Three and half stars for me (looks for half star button).

I love this place. Its not fancy but the food is tasty. I eat here almost 3 times a week and always order the same thing. the "Dinner Plate" which has ginger chicken, sweet sour pork, fried rice, wonton, and beef with brocoli for about $9. its a lot of food. When I come with my brother and his family we always get the sweet and sour fish...its my nephew's favorite.

This restaurant is senior citizen central. Nothing wrong with that, but it makes me wonder why no one under 55 comes in and if I'm weird at 21 for eating here. I always get the Minute Chicken Cake Noodle or the Seafood Crispy Noodle--they never disappoint. The chicken is crispy fried and flavorful and the cake noodle is superb here--crunchy exterior, chewy interior, with just the right amount of gravy. The Seafood Crispy Noodle comes out so hot it's steaming. I love the contrast in textures between the seafood, vegetables, noodles, and gravy--it's a well-balanced dish. The 1 or 2 times I deviated from ordering noodles, I was full of regret. Everything was so fatty, lacking color, or unappetizing--think Patti's Chinese Kitchen pre-shutdown. Just order the noodles here and you won't be sorry.

The dinner plate is the perfect mix of food for the single boy living in the city. A heaping portion of fried rice, sweet & sour spare ribs, beef brocolli, ginger chicken (my fave), and two crispy wontons is what comes in a dinner plate. At $8 and some change, I think it's a pretty sweet deal.

When I get a hankering for Chinese food, it is off to Golden Duck I go. I love their spare ribs. Not like, but love their spare ribs. My husband likes their ginger chicken. The dinner plate is great and provides a sampling of everything - noodles, beef broccoli, fried rice (lots of it!) and the ribs (yum!). Portions are generous and the prices are quite reasonable. One dinner plate for $8. And, that is more than enough food for two meals. Every time I have been to the restaurant, there are always people in there enjoying the food, and that's a good sign. It is my go to place for satisfying Chinese food at good prices and generous portions. If you call for take out, they are quick and good about having it ready so you don't have to wait.

Delicious chinese food and rather inexpensive! The won ton mein is delicious, ma po tofu is bomb, and egg foo young really yummy! Maybe feels like they put a lot of msg in the food so that's not too good, but still a fan regularly!

Every business has mixed reviews maybe off days or taste buds. Well i'll give a fair review that I comment on only what i've tried so can never say food sucks for a place but can say fried rice here does! I've ordered it 5 times and it was very inconsistent. I order the shrimp char siu fried rice on all occasions and first time was very oily that i think i could drink a shot of oil. Flavor was okay but wow so oily. Second time it was so dry that i had to keep drinking to stop from choking. Next time ordered it had no flavor that i had to put so much salt to it. I never saw a Chinese restaurant put lettuce in a fried rice before and that was interesting. Service on most part was bad. Never ate in just take out so out of 5 visits service was okay twice by waitress and one guess older waiter. Other three times I felt offended. Wanted to choke the waiter or take him outside. Waiting paitiently for him to ask if I am ready but to get a What chu like?! Next with a What chu ready?! Another time I was short changed given $90.10 change and realized after going home so called them back and waiter said oh I work tomorrow so come. No apologies?? Went next day to pick up my change and did not see the waiter but had the other one who was also working. After waiting for him to put some money away in the register he looks at me and asks What ? You ready? So told him why I was there and he told me I don't know but here dollarand walked into kitchen! Lots of attitude buy these two guys. Other wait help are okay. So service, value, taste adds up to two stars. Well gotta say fried rice portion was huge that it filled up almost every corner of the box but yeah two stars. Maybe ill try the cake noodles and it might ad a star to them. Also it is not on the cheap side.

This was the first time that I went to this restaurant and I really liked the food. We got honey walnut shrimp, spicy eggplant with pork and duck on soft noodles with gravy. I really enjoyed the food and the waitress came by often to refill the water and tea. The parking is rather limited but we went early. There was a lot of take out walk ins and orders so the restaurant is very busy. I would definitely go there again and would like to try the other dishes that they have.

The food is not too bad. It's nothing special. Something that is your average Chinese restaurant serves. Just hang at the table, let the waiters bring the plates, and scoop out what you want. But, when I asked friends about the place, they said that this restaurant has been around for a while and was in a different location. If anyone can tell me where that was, please do so.

i eat here almost once a week. nothing fancy, but consistent - the food, the service, the decor, the ambience, the staff... i usually get any or all of these dishes and recommend: SALT AND PEPPER PORK CHOP, SHRIMP VEGETABLE CAKE NOODLE, HOT GINGER CHICKEN, and ORANGE CHICKEN. in summary - consistently good food (fast) at a reasonable price.

This is an interesting place. It's almost like Chinese comfort food. It's one of those "Hey, let's dump gravy on everything" spots. But it's good though. I won't write you a four-paragraph manifesto about it, but I like to come here for something different.

My parent took me to this restaurant once and we left before we finished our meal. We had ordered some sort of soup that was sort of a clear broth. I had been drinking it until I noticed that something in my soup was moving. I looked closer and there was tiny little roaches swimming around in the soup. I looked in the main bowl that we had taken it out of and there was more. I stopped my parents from taking a sip and let them see what was moving around. I have no idea how many tiny roaches I had swallowed ,but I'm glad that I prevented my parents from eating any. We got our check and left and never looked back

Nothing spectacular, but food is good, fast service, and great selection. I've been coming here on and off for over 10 years, and the staff isn't as nice and food not as good as the original GD. A tad above average, comfortable ambiance, recommended if you want fast, efficient, and decent Chinese food. I normally get the lunch plate or cake noodles plate. Specials and soups are a bargain too. Private parking lot or King street metered parking. Lot is big, but fills fast during peak hours. Still a very popular place with all the Uncles and Aunty's who enjoy the cold AC and generous proportions here! Who remembers the old Golden Duck? I do! I love the rubber ducky collection near the registers too! It's radical! Not too popular with trendy Yelpers, but still a big hit with the Senior Citizens & duck lovers & haters?

This is my go to place for Jook (rice porridge filled with different things). They have many different vareties but for me it is always the seafood combination. Love that their jook is a little bit more on the thicker side instead of runny. They also give wonton strips and greens on the side to put in to help make it more hearty.

My family and my go-to for cheap Chinese food! Don't be expecting traditional Chinese food, come to think of it...living in Hawaii, I am not sure I know what "traditional" Chinese food really is. Let me just say that I love their ginger chicken and spareribs mmmm... Their wonton soups are also tasty. Best thing is that it is super affordable!

Duck noodle soup= YUM. If I had stopped at that, I'd have rated this place much more highly. I tried two other dishes (beef broccoli chow fun and the seafood noodle), and I was unimpressed with both... The flavor was greasy, and the meat and noodles were slimy. I did love the fresh veggies on the dishes though, and the seafood was good. I heard the guy at the next table order his food with no MSG, so apparently that is an option.

There is something about eating at a Chinese restaurant that doesn't have a sterile interior. Golden Duck fits that bill. Now I don't consider myself a die hard fan nor a regular. I have a sporadic attendance at this restaurant. It's definitely on my list of cheap good Chinese food to go to but usually on the end of the list. Not because it's horrible, just happens if I am in the area and to lazy to drive the extra 5 minutes to go to Chinatown. Service is average - they are not overly attentive but they wouldn't completely ignore you either. My only complaint is that the tea cups smell heavily of bleach or clorox. I know I should be thankful that the dishes are clean but I don't feel like inhaling cleaning solution while I am downing hot tea. Food has always been pretty good and I haven't found any hair or bugs in my food. The booths are on the smaller side. Sitting on King Street, you can enter the parking lot after taking the first side street immediately following the restaurant, first driveway on the right. The parking lot is small, street parking is avaiable - or I should say it's there, good luck trying to score a spot. Sitting next door to a gas station, so I wouldn't recommend parking there unless you want your car towed.

It's Thursday and I ate at the Golden Duck today. The Golden Duck is nostalgic for me. Whenever I go, I start remembering things from the past. If I go, I go on Thursday's because the special of the day is Duck Noodle ($7.95). I love duck noodle when it is cheap; and cheap reminds me of the past. Me: "One Duck Noodle please!" ..and my journey back to the past begins. I remember when The Golden Duck was on McCully Street. Yes! Golden Duck was on McCully Street in the past. There were many Chinese and other restaurants in the area back then because of the old "Termite Palace", the Honolulu Stadium. The stadium attracted thousands of people to the McCully and Moilili area on weekends back then. I remember going to the Termite Palace to watch the ILH Thanksgiving Day Football Double Hitter when Punahou, Kamehameha, Farrington and Roosevelt dominated the ILH. I remember that when my family went out to eat; we ate saimin and barbeque sticks at Japanese restaurants in McCully, Moilili, Makiki, Kaimuki and Kalihi. There were so many Japanese and Chinese restaurants all over town back then. I remember the Rainbow Rollerland and Scotty's Drive-in right next door. I loved Scotty's because of their burgers and fries. I remember going to the Civic Auditorium and world middle weight boxing champion Bobo Olsen; wrestlers Curtis "the Bull" Iaukea and Handsome Johnny Barend; men's and women's Roller Derby; and Tom Moffat even brought in Elvis Presley for a concert at the Civic too. The last stop for the night might have been the Golden Duck, McCully Chop Suey or Tin Tin. I mix some hot mustard and shoyu and start to eat. I look at the décor and atmosphere of the restaurant and it is just like the old Golden Duck and all the other old Chinese restaurants where you want to stay in the dining area and are afraid to look to see what going on in the kitchen. I remember going to the Toyo and Kokusai Theaters to watch Zatoichi and Nakamura Kinnosuke and Ichikawa Raizo and going to the Golden Duck after a movie. I used to like their won ton mein back then. I remember our gang going to Liberty Theater to watch kung fu movies starring Alexander Fu Sheng. The Golden Duck was a place we used to go because the food was cheap. We never thought too much about taste back then. When we went to a restaurant, it was based on the words "plenty" and "cheap". I remember when there was no such thing as Thai food or a Vietnamese restaurant way back then. If we didn't eat at the Golden Duck or McCully Chop Suey we would end up at Washington Saimin, Chunky's or the Likelike Drive Inn. I remember when Chinese and Japanese restaurant were absolutely packed. Back then, we ate manapua and never knew there was such a thing as Hong Kong dim sum. My duck leg was just like the old day where it kind of falls off the bone. The noodle was basic and there was nothing special about it like the $12.00 ramen at Lucky Belly. The noodles are just nostalgic and remind me of all the cheap saimin and won ton mein and crispy gau gee mein I've had in the old Chinese restaurants of days gone by. I remember when things began to change. My shirts were not tailor made from Kuni's or hand me downs but store bought Polo's from Liberty House. My pants were permapress LEVI's or Hagger. The first reverse print aloha shirts were sold by Reyn's. McDonald's came to Hawaii. There was Kentucky Fried Chicken. The Higa's opened the first Zippy's in McCully. Magoo's and Shakey's Pizza opened. Keo's open and all of a sudden Thai, then Vietnamese and Southeast Asian restaurants opened all over town. Nobody was eating Chinese food anymore and all the Chinese restaurants started closing. I have to say that the soup of my duck noodle was a bit salty and I could definitely taste the MSG. There really wasn't anything special about the duck noodle except that it was cheap. There is no such thing as a $.29 hamburger at McDonald's anymore. People started eating butterfat ice cream; yogurt and fro-yo are now the in thing at $.49/oz. And the latest food craze in Honolulu is a seafood boil that will cost you over $25.00/person. I had an AYCE yakiniku at Shillowan the other night and that was $25.00 for me. I ate a hamburger at Teddy's Bigger Burger the other day and by the time I built my burger it cost me over $10.00. When I'm in a restaurant that are all clean and chic and the food are so tasty and delicious; I somehow don't sit and remember the good old days while eating. But when I get my bill, I have to admit that I do sit staring; thinking; dreaming and just can't wait for Thursday when I can have my duck noodle again for $7.95. The Golden Duck is a link to my past with it's cheap Chinese food, that I remember from the good old days. P.S. I'm sitting here typing and I do have this splitting headache. Not to worry because I know why! It's the price I pay for my journey to the good old days.

The King Street location of the Golden Duck offers the same flavorful Chinese meals as its Kahala location, although the ambiance is quite different. The King Street restaurant has more of a chop suey house feel to it. The family gathered there for dinner one evening before the New Year, anchoring down one corner with a huge round table for 10. Needless to say, it was quite a feast. One thing about ordering Chinese food family style ... the food keeps coming, and there's always going to be a lot leftover for someone to take home. The Golden Duck experience was no different. We had lots of food. They offer (and we had) all the familiar favorites. But then, I wasn't in charge of the dinner and I didn't do the ordering. In fact, when it comes to Chinese food, I'd rather somebody else do the ordering. Here's what we had that night: Abalone Soup, Chicken Salad, Chicken Sin Choy, Sweet-Sour Spare Ribs, Honey-Walnut Shrimp, Minute Chicken with Cake Noodles, and Ginger Chicken. It was all good. Not as good as my favorite Chinese Restaurant (Joy Luck Palace in Cupertino, California), but tasty enough indeed.

A quick place for lunch. My co- workers and I needed to get out of the office one day. We decided to drive to Golden Duck. The parking is located in the back of the restaurant. There seems to be enough parking, but it was almost full. The restaurant was fairly crowded with old timers who look like the regulars, cops on a break, and other people that look like they work nearby. The restaurant is clean and so was our table. We had a view of King Street from where we sat. The servers were attentive. We ordered 3 meals shared family style. The Mongolian beef, seafood and vegetables, and roasted duck chow mein is what we got. I really liked the roasted duck chow mein and the beef. The hot tea was good with the meal too. If I worked in the area I would definitely see myself visiting here, but I wouldn't drive a far distance to eat here.

We ordered take out on Wednesday night. I got the broccoli in garlic sauce which was nothing to write home about. My husband got the roast duck though and still hasn't fully recovered. He spent all day yesterday hovering near a bathroom--I guess the duck is only good as a colon cleanse. Steer clear of Golden Duck!

I do wish I could give a half star coz their peking duck was pretty dang good. Anyway, after reading some of these reviews I was very hesitant to come here (especially after the roach reports!) but since we were being invited by other people that I really didn't know too well, I figured what the heck. I'll just pay very close attention to what I'm eating. And as long as everything is cooked thoroughly, right? I was really expecting a dank, dark and damp interior but that wasn't the case. Golden Duck is not as run down as a lot of people have reported it is, well not anymore at least. I'm not proud to admit this per se, but I have been to and seen some really suspect chinese restaurants (in America and Asia) and this place isn't one of them. It's not a place you'd necessarily want to hold your rehearsal dinner or bar mitzpha but it's not terrible. It's very casual and was pretty clean the day we went. The chairs weren't buss up or rusty, the tables weren't greasy, in fact it looked like they may have been recently replaced. Even the walls seemed clean and freshly painted. Okay, so far so good. Now about the food: The have a pretty good selection on their menu but our hosts ordered minute chicken w/ cake noodle (very tasty, not salty like other minute chicken I've had), steam fish (good, but our host ordered it less salty coz I guess last time it was way too salty), clams and black beans sauce (surprisingly bland, but the clams were fresh), chinese brocolli with garlic (very good), shrimp fried rice (kinda of bland), spicy eggplant with pork (very good), peking duck (was really good. The skin was nice and crunchy and the bun was so soft and warm. This has to be one of the better peking ducks I've had in Honolulu so far.) Like a lot have Yelpers have said, the food it isn't bad at all. Nothing blow your mind, but overall pretty tasty. And for your money, the portions are big. If you lived in this area and wanted casual, quick, cheap and tasty chinese than its a convenient choice. I'll come back for the peking duck. Pros: -Casual and Affordable -Good sized portions/family style -BYOB! -BYOD! (That's bring your own dessert, but gotta bring your own cake plates) Cons: -Small restaurant, if you have a big group like we did (over 14 people) you'll need to call ahead of time for them to put you in the large corner tables. Otherwise its like booth seating or table of 4. -Limited parking

Judging from the reviews here in yelp, this restaurant is severely underrated. Been coming here for 29 years. Great dinner plate. Ginger chicken, mapo tofu, stuffed tofu, kau yuk, egg foo young are among the best in town. Great value for their fried rice varieties Just try mixing the sweet and sour rib sauce with the egg foo yong, its heavenly!Just tried their straw mushrooms with cashews and it was great as well. Fast and courteous service.

Dinner order, roast duck, shrimp with sugar snap peas, onchoy with beef, was fresh and tasty. Also ordered steamed rice which came heaped in a large bowl. Free oolong tea in a teapot was quickly refilled without a word. Restaurant is centrally located and they have their own parking (behind restaurant). We sat at one of their old-style Naugahyde booths. Could use a good hosing off & scrubbing. Service was very efficient. Accept credit card. I would come back again.

I am a sucker for good chop suey. I have a lot to say about chinese food (food from China vs. Chinese food from the mainland vs. Chinese food from Hawaii), but I'll save that for another time.... I had the chicken jook, crispy gau gee min, and fried rice. The jook was really good. Sometimes I think it's harder to get simple things to taste good than complex things....and this is a good example. The flavor was just salty enough to bring out the flavor of the chicken and the rice. My wife is a jook lover and she agreed that it was on point. The crispy gau gee min was very good. Of course, I haven't meant one that I haven't liked. The combination of the meat, vegetables, noodles, and crispy dumplings makes this a perfect dish. The flavor on the noodles was really great and they are soft, without being too soft. I have yet to find a noodle dish on the mainland similar.....what a shame. The fried rice was good as well.....not as good as the other two, but good. I don't know if this dish is a must get like the other two, but it's tasty. I know there are two locations for this restaurant....so I will be trying the other location to see if the food tastes the same.......YUM!

This place used to be solid way back in the day.....like 15-20 years ago. Sadly, it's a shadow of it's former self. We went on a weekday afternoon (maybe that was part of the problem) and ordered roast duck and chicken chow mein. Simple and straightforward dishes. The chow mein was good...middle of the road, nothing fancy. The duck was easily the worst duck I can remember having in a very long time. Dry, tough and barely edible. Again, maybe ordering duck on a Wednesday afternoon isn't the best of ideas.

Great parking, convenient location, FAST service......nice neighborhood restaurant, very consistent product - not over salty. You can't go wrong here. The prices are reasonable & their specials are a deal, their portions are good. We do take out here at least once a month. Their fried rice is to die for :) Why four stars instead of 5? Don't go to the restroom to find out.

The Chinese New Year jai rates five stars; otherwise I rate this restaurant 4 stars at best. The special New Year jai (jai is a vegetarian dish popularized by monks) has many types of mushrooms and fungi along with tofu, rice noodles and other veggies. The restaurant was also selling gau ( a New Year mochi like food) and peanut candy both excellent. The Golden Duck has been in Honolulu for decades and now has several branches. It is plain Chinese food for everyday meals--not for those looking for a fancy restaurant. Here you will get good food at a food value.

I really like this place. They have daily specials, and their lunch/dinner plate (it's the same thing) is amazing for the price. If you want to be real cheap, you can order a saimin which is $5. I've been going to this place since I was 15, when my family moved close by. Their saimin has choi sum, char siu, and so many noodles that it could feed two! I swear it's like they got 4 bundles of noodles and threw them into the bowl. Last night I had the dinner plate. Sis had Chicken Vegetable Noodle. Our three friends had two Shrimp Fried Rice and a Pork Hash Eggplant w/ Rice. The fried rice was so big that they agreed that they should've shared their food. The Pork Hash Eggplant must have been good, because it was gone very quickly. The dinner plate had sweet sour spare ribs, beef broccoli, cold ginger chicken, two crispy won tons, and a lot of char siu fried rice (with egg and veggies inside). My sis enjoyed her chicken vegetable noodle, but she gave me half because it was so big. For the price you get so much food. It seems that you could easily split any entree and still be happy. On a Sunday night, the place was so crowded. Their large parking lot was almost full and they had to make a four top a five top for everyone to fit.

Kahala Golden Duck vs town Golden Duck. Both places have wonderful service but somehow the kahala location taste better. I am sure the recipes are the same but somehow it just taste differently. Cold ginger is probably my favorite. Something about their sauce that's different from other Chinese restaurant. If you are around the area and love cold ginger chicken, stop by and have an order. Don't forget your rice.

I had gone back for a few times in teh past few years, trying other things but never really 'loving' it. but I chalked it up to maybe choosing the wrong dish. It happens. I recently went back one afternoon and retried the previously loved Chicken black bean sauce with cake noodle. Uh, what happened to my beloved dish? I dunno, a bad off day? for both of us? I just found the cake noodle to be uninspiring. It was hard, cold and not at all crispy on the outside tender on the inside. It just sat there and I was afraid it was going to just sit in my stomach. I remembered the chicken being moist and succulent, but this time, the chicken was just chopped and there. Not the most tender I ever had. I really did not finish it. I'm not going to write off Golden Duck. Next time I will try a shrimp dish, as I tend to be weireded out if chicken is not prepared how I like it. Or I will try a generic cantonese dish. I' m sure they do many dishes well. I just think Cake noodle has to be prepared just right, and this was not. memories, of a cake noodle gone by.

My favorite place to go when I am just hungry for straight up Chinese food with good portions for a good price. I'm Chinese and those things matter to me. I go to Fook Yuen on McCully if I am craving Kau Yuk or Honey Glazed Walnuts but unless you are going for the discounted late night menu at Fook Yuen, this is the far better option. Golden Duck makes the best cake noodle which you can get for just a few cents more with almost any dish. They don't bury their food in sauces which has become to case at so many other Chinese restaurants. They know how to bring out the flavor of the meal. They have friendly service but they are not that attentive. You'll really need to flag them down.

To me it was overrated...the food was fine but u can find it cheaper else where....i love my chinese food and it gotta b authentic quality food....this restaurant is alright, didn't live up to the hype that i've been hearing about this place

One of THE BEST places for chinese food. It doesn't matter what you order, it's onolicious. We ordered 2 orders each of cold ginger chicken and roast pork. The chicken wasn't dry, it was sooo moist and that's without putting the ginger sauce on it. The sauce had just the right amount of ginger and seasonings. Not overpowering. The roast pork was also moist with the crispy skin. My mouth is watering right now as i'm typing this. I've also had their crispy gau gee cake noodle. One of the best i've ever had. The noodles are made perfectly. Not too crispy, not too soft...just right. What makes this place even more unique...is the customer service. When you usually go to chinese restaurants, the servers are usually abrupt, and in a rush. But not at Golden Duck. They give you time to look over the menu and they actually smile. :) The only downside is the parking situation. Other than that i'd rate this as a top 3 as far as chinese restaurants go.

Been here twice and if I rate their food I probably would give 3.5. The reason I'm giving it 1 star only because of the place. I'm not a neat freak person but I just can't really stand looking and thinking what is really behind their kitchen huwaaa!! For me, the place is not clean at all. They could have at least update their walls on new painting and so on to give it a clean looking and not me eating and thinking if it's clean enough right from their kitchen. I don't know, it just give me chills sometimes. Sorry....

I've been a frequent customer to Golden Duck since childhood basically and it PAINS me to write this review but I recently ordered a dish from there and as I was mixing my noodles around, I noticed a brown spot... at first, I thought it was a piece of burnt noodle, until I looked closer... and noticed... legs... coming out of the brown spot. Yeahhhhh, it was a cockroach. I wanted to hurl and took a picture of it but I will spare you the photo. I immediately called the manager and he was nice about it and said he'd credit me and give me a free dish next time but sadly... will there BE a next time??? Normally, I'd give a restaurant an automatic 1 star and a terrible review if this were to happen under any other circumstance. But I love GDuck toooooo much to bring myself to give it that 1 star rating. =\ The taste of the food still broke da mouth... just be sure to look closely at it before taking a bite.

Awesome cake noodle, great fried rice, undercooked beef. Good service, poor parking. How does one rate such a place? It is A-ok and I'm not really a fan yet, so how about 3.5? I'd return here sometime soon for more cake noodles and rice. They had some interesting things on the menu that I'd like to try later as well. That will have to wait though which is unfortunate. My domination of S. King Street continues.

I just had dinner here tonight after the most exhausting night/day of cramming and exam-taking. It was rather appropriate given the circumstances: - I looked like a mess - My eyes had bags worse than my dog - I probably looked/smelled worse than my dog This place felt right since it was totally unpretentious and I definitely had no chance of being seen or running into people I knew. Kind of like that one episode in Sex & The City when Big repeatedly takes Carrie to that semi-sleazy Chinese place in some random corner of the city and she feels insecure since it seems like the kind of place to go when you want to fly way under the radar. Yup, that's here. The food is okay, but cheap with huge portions. We tried: - shrimp fried rice : massive, but kind of bland. tastes better with shoyu and hot sauce. - minute chicken cake noodle : huge, with lots of flavor and sauce - salt & pepper pork chops : soft, well-seasoned and crispy Their service is pretty attentive since they seem well, if not over-staffed. TIP: they have a different special each day for $7.50, today happened to be minute chicken noodle so we couldn't pass up a good deal!

I'm not to crazy about this place...came here once with some coworkers because it was near my apartment. As soon as we opened the door I could instantly smell the oil, msg aroma and that quickly made me feel queasy! We ordered ala cart so we could share everything between us three. I ordered a plate of my favorite dish ROAST DUCK, my coworkers got the honey walnut shrimp and beef broccoli. The roast duck was good but small portion and the honey walnut was also good and small portion and the beef broccoli had way way to much broccoli! The workers weren't so nice and they didn't acknowledge us like they should to customers. Prices was reasonable. It looked like older crowds liked to come here being that we were the youngest out of everyone. I think it was okay in the taste of the food for the price we paid. And it definitely is convenient with plenty of parking. I liked that they had Chinese pretzels in packages sold separately (which I bought of course)! Just wish the smell wasn't so strong!

Can't figure out why some people don't like this place, it's one of my favorite paces to get Cake Noodles, they are so good. I think i always get the chicken choi sum cake noodle. Chicken is tender, choi sum has a nice contrast in texture to the cake noodles, sauce is flavorful. I also got the spicy pork and eggplant, eggplant was soft and delicious, the sauce was spicy and had some sweetness to it. It had threads of bamboo shoots which were good but the pork was cut really thin, i wish the peices were bigger. Still good though. Food is good, can't see why people complain or comment about atmosphere, it is what it is.... its not PF Changs or some fancy place. you don't knock McDonalds for not having ambiance or complain that it comes on plastic trays. Golden duck is a no frills, good food kind of spot.

I come here for one thing. Cake noodles. No joke. I don't know what it is but it is really good. Anyway, if you need a great casual chinese restaurant or need some takeout, Golden Duck is a great place to stop by. Good quality food, reasonable prices, and great location make it a place I go to! The menu is your standard chinese fare and like I said, try the cake noodles. It doesn't matter if it is the Crispy Gau Gee Min or the Chicken Chow Mein, it is very good. Nothing ever disappoints, whether it is the szechuan eggplant or the lemon chicken. The portions are pretty good sized as well. If its just one or two of you, try their lunch or dinner plates which offer a good assortment at a pretty reasonable price. The location is pretty convenient right off King Street near Piikoi. Parking is in the back of the building but it can fill up so just wait or drive around the block. I've never had to wait long. It isn't an elegant restaurant, rather a casual cafeteria type feel that is comfortable and not pretentious.

I was on a company trip and my partner and I decided to have dinner at the Golden Duck. We're both vegetarians and chinese food usually has a lot of options for us so we were looking forward to a nice meal. Unfortunately it was quite the opposite. It's pretty dirty inside and all the guys who worked there seemed to be college kids and were not helpful in the slightest. When we mentioned that we were vegetarian they all smirked and laughed. And after we ordered, it was obvious they were talking about us, the way they'd whisper to each other and then glance towards our table (no one else was sitting near us) and giggle. Our food came our quickly. I tried one bite of mine and slid it across the table, it was absolutely awful. And I'm not picky: if it's veg I'll eat it. Not this! My partner ordered garlic broccoli (a daily special) and it was yummy, until we found a big piece of beef hiding in the center underneath the broccoli. It was completely obvious that this was their way of playing a mean-spirited joke on the vegetarians. We didn't find it funny. When we looked up, all the workers were looking at us to see how we'd react. We calmly got up to pay because no one was coming over to give us our check and the cashier had to go back and forth asking the kitchen what to charge us. It was by far the worst dining experience I ever had.

This has got to be one of the better Chinese restaurants on the island. Their menu is an ala carte type and so as you can imagine, one order comes with a lot of food! When I come here, I normally get the salt and pepper pork chops, steamed buns, house fried rice, and honey walnut shrimp. They have a variety of menu items ranging from pork, chicken, beef, noodles, vegetables, etc. The only downfall I see with Golden duck is their abundant use of MSG (yes i know, "but what authentic Chinese restaurant doesn't use MSG"). This location is a little run down like your typical mom and pop restaurant. I haven't been to their newest location in Kahala yet, so that place might have a more cleaner feel. They do have a private parking area, with very limited parking, but I never had trouble finding parking. This place is a good family place. Ample amount of seating, including round tables that have glass spinning feature in the middle. :)

Golden Duck is one of my new favorite every day Chinese Restaurants. I have read others reviews and do agree with some of the complaints, such as the cramped booths and lack luster decor, but this is a cheap down and dirty, great tasting Chinese restaurant right off King and Piikoi, right in the middle of town. Very convenient... So I've been here four times now and the food has been consistently yummy, the service has always been attentive and friendly, and the speed at which the food comes out is almost dis-concerning its so fast. For me it's a toss up between here and Moon Garden for my favorite cheap Chinese food. Seating is easier here, food is more authentic there. Enjoy... TIPS: Parking behind the restaurant, After 6pm no need pay for street parking, girlfriend is a beef broccoli connoisseur and loves this one.

My coworker and I used to love coming to this restaurant for lunch. I used to love ordering their tofu vegetable noodle dish. It was very tasty and they always gave a good portion where I would have leftovers for my next meal. We spent many lunch hours lounging, chatting and enjoying our noodle and rice entrees until this last time we went and my coworker found an entire caterpillar in her dish. A pretty meaty sizeable one too. She brought this up politely and discreetly to our waitress and all she told us was that the vegetables sometimes come that way. Okay... We understand that bugs love vegetables, but don't you wash yours and take the time to separate the leaves out before chopping them up? Apparently they don't. My friend and I didn't touch our dishes once it was found and unfortunately needed to head back to the office, but no apology was made to us and they had the nerve to charge us full price for her meal along with no offering of a credit or anything. We will never be back.

The food was really good. Only my second time eating there in three years. The scenery is the reason why I gave three stars. I might be expecting too much from a family owned restaurant. But if it looked nicer, this would have been a four star review.

Soo convenient, fast, reasonable, and open late. We had the crispy chicken, seafood cake noodles, and pork and string beans. I can only compare to Mandalay since I usually eat dim sum at Chinese places. The crispy chicken was a little dry and the skin not as crispy as Mandalay but it was tasty The seafood cake noodles were much better than Mandalay with a lot of veggies (choi sum, carrots, straw mushrooms) and well seasoned seafood (shrimp, squid, and scallop). The string beans and pork was also well seasoned and generous portions. Overall, a comfortable place to go when you want to eat a good, quick Chinese meal.

A friend brought me here this past Tuesday night. I was completely impressed before we even ordered looking at how packed full of families this place was! It was super busy and the employees were hussling to get dirty tables clean and get peoples orders in. Everything we ordered was super yummy, especially the scallops!!!!! SO good! I would recommend this restaurant to any one!

I debated giving this restaurant 2 stars. But, the fact of the matter is...this restaurant isn't that bad. Honestly, the food is pretty good. That's a lot coming from someone who has avoided this place like the plague for the past couple years...all because of countless bad reviews & experiences from my family & friends. But, last weekend was my first time here. My friend's BF chose this place because I told him I was craving rice & somewhat of a hearty meal. Now, I could've refused to going here...but, I felt I should at least experience it for myself before I go on judging. I personally love all types of ethnic food. But, there's something about Chinese food in particular that I can never say "no" to. It's just so good, when done right. Now, from the experience that my friends & I had that night, I can sort of see why this place gets so many bad reviews. Personally, I don't think it's for the food because really that was the only good part about it. Other than that, their customer service needs a GREAT amount of improvement!! I don't know if it was because we were seated kinda hidden in the corner of the restaurant, but that Saturday night, we got "the shitty end of the stick" when it comes to their customer service. They hardly came to check on us or never even refilled our waters, like you're normally supposed to do when you wait tables. And not to mention, we waited almost 30 min after notifying the waiter for us to get our check & we still didn't get it.

I should have known from the outside that this place would be horrible. My friend and I only went here because we were sick of walking around looking for food to no avail. We both ordered the same duck dish and it was just pretty nasty. Usually, I'm very easy going about Chinese food and usually enjoy even the cheap mediocre type. We were both unhappy and for some reason stayed and ate it. We were so glad to get out of there that's for sure. The worst thing was the next day we both had terrible food poisoning.

Chowfun, huge portions, lots of meat, sweet gravy and tender, fresh noodles. We got the black bean gravy, beef chowfun, no veggies. Drool! Mushrooms, tofu and vegetable stir fry. I could almost go vegan! NAH. Slurp! Comes out searing hot! Hang time: 3 minutes. Or 1 minute, if you have an asbestos tongue. That's the beststestest part of Golden Duck. Food is only made upon ordering and the ingredients are very fresh. Not cold, not lukewarm, not reheated. You can hear the sizzling from the dining area, for quack's sake. Piece de resistance: the salt/pepper, deep fried, garlic shrimp with shell on. Don't bother with the peeled shrimp. The shrimp head is so crispy it can be eaten and the saltiness is overwhelming. YEAHHHH!!!. Blood start pumping out my eyes!!! SALT! SALT! SALT! I don't know what it is about the acoustics in this place or if we just get unlucky with whom we have to sit next to. Every time we're there a large group of elderly deaf sit there bitching about their body parts! Buh-jeezus, people. Keep your smelly nuts to yo-selfffffff! Hiss! Not pretty. Shadddap!!! They still have dirty floors. Minus 1 star.

**NOT FOR THE WEAK AT EYES-HEART-STOMACH** I was talking with a friend one day and mentioned Golden Duck and before I could finish my sentence she stopped me. DON'T GO THERE she tells me. OK why?!?! Oh boy why did i ask that. She had ordered saimin. Nothing crazy. Got her food and started eating. As she was eating she thought oh that's new, whole black pepper in the saimin. Ok she continued on. Lifts up a piece of cabbage and finds a dead cockroach and it's eggs!!! EWWW. YUCK. NASTY. GROSS. I'll end my story with that. I know everyone has different experiences but that just killed it for me. I do not plan on going there and my friend will never go back there. For obvious reasons. I just thought I would share this with you. Not to turn you away but just a friendly heads up. I know this can happen at any other restaurant also. Because it has.

We just got back a few hours ago. We ordered the eggplant pork hash, black mushroom tofu w/broccoli, and honey walnut shrimp. My gf has a very sensitive stomach. Afterwards she got tummy ache, chills sweats, & abdominal pain & big time diarhea. We suspect they used recycled oil for our eggplant pork hash. After we ate half of it, we could see a puddle of bubbly oil on the bottom of the dish. We feel that they are reusing oil all day long, possibly a day or two. So if you eat stir fry beware and good luck! You would be better of eating anyhing that is steamed in water!

I've been to this location twice so far. The first time was okay. Service could've been better, but the food was good so I'm not going to complain. We ordered chicken chow fun (dry), some kind of soup (I don't remember the name), beef broccoli, chicken chop suey & lemon chicken. All of it was really good and very tasty. I heard they use a lot of MSG in their foods, but I couldn't tell. On my second visit, I ordered take out. The lady that helped me was really nice, but I wasn't too pleased with the chicken chow fun. I ordered lemon chicken too and that was really good. Crispy & not too much oil. Back to the chow fun....I LOVE chow fun. I order it everytime we eat at a Chinese restaurant. I don't know why, but this time, it was so oily! It leaked through the take out tray and in the bag, that's how oily it was. I still ate some, but ended up trashing most of it. It's like they poured half a bottle of oil in the pan and threw in the chow fun and veggies. 2 stars for that. I'll definitely go back since they are a little more reasonable than Lam's which is a little further down the street and since the Kahala location is convenient for me. I just hope the chow fun won't be as oily next time.

I will go again & give it another shot, but from what I have eaten recently I will not be looking forward to it. There are numerous other Chinese restaurants in Hawaii that are far superior. Some of their dishes weren't bad, but most everything was swimming in oil. I'm a big fan of fried food so when I say it's too greasy you can take that to the bank, lol! Their prices are reasonable along with their portions, which is the reason they are always busy. I really don't know what else to say about Golden Duck other than go somewhere else...

I used to come here regularly when returning back to my dorm at UH Sunday nights. Now not so much, unless we are in the area. Usually I'd get the dinner special or minute chicken with cake noodles which are always sure bets to fill me up. On this visit though I had the won ton mien since I had a big lunch that day. Usually we would sit in the area closer to the kitchen. What I noticed is that service is better in that area. Today it took a while to receive our menus once we were seated. This time we were in the opposite end. Another couple that came in after us waited a while also. I should've stuck my usual orders. The broth in the won ton mien was kinda bland. The won ton was good though. The other diners I was with said that their noodle dishes were saltier than usual. The tea could have been warmer.

Golden Duck is like my home base for Chinese food. We're here, I'd say, at least twice a month. The portions are huge, the service is fast and friendly, and the prices won't break you. Sometimes we come here when it's "dinner time" but we're not really all that hungry, so we split an entree, and it's more than plenty. Awesome gau gee, which we get when we're really going all out. Normally, we'll share a beef broccoli noodle (cake noodle!!) and saimin. Basically, Golden Duck is a place that you can always count on. You know exactly what to expect and they never disappoint. I'm proud to be a "regular" here. :-)

On our way to the beach, my family stopped here first to get some food. If it has duck, odds are I'm going to love it. It mostly lived up to it. We ordered roast duck, noodles, won ton soup, lobster in black bean sauce and some orange chicken. Positives -- 1. Roast duck was great. The lobster was a little clumbsy to eat but had a nice spicy flavor. 2. Good service. Waitress refreshed my drink frequestly. 3. Cost was decent. Negatives -- 1. The noodles were actually disappointing, and I am a big fan of asian noodles. The sauce was just kind of "meh". 2. The sauce on the orange chicken was really sugary. It normally is sweet, but this was almost candy-like. The kids liked it, for what it's worth.

I really love the Golden Duck! I've never had a problem with the food here, it's always been delicious. My husband and I eat here regularly, so I'm pretty confident of my rating. It's one of our favorite Chinese places, and we don't have to trek all the way into China town for great Chinese food! FTW! My favorite thing to eat is the Ong Choi, and it's super tasty. This restaurant offers several versions of Ong Choi, one is sweet and garlicy, and the other is spicy. Go for the spicy one, and you will be a happy camper. The steamed buns are tasty too! Service is typical for a Chinese restaurant, not too friendly, but very diligent and on top of things. My tea has never run out! It's a smallish place, not a huge banquet hall, and the furnishing is from back in the day, but it's all good, I don't mind the decor. There's a bunch of little rubber duckies on the counter by the cash registers. Love the duckies! The only reason I'm giving the Golden Duck 4 stars instead of 5 is the parking situation. The parking lot is small, and street parking is hard to find during peak hours. But then again, it's Hawaii, and parking is horrible everywhere you go. Wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars. They've got a new sign, and I have to say... I really miss the old sign. But then I'm nostalgic like that.
