Got to support my people, especially when they offer good vegetarian options! I took advantage of one of those coupon offers to try the tofu curry and lemongrass tofu - both tolerably good. Since that coupon visit, I periodically check out the available delicious Vietnamese desserts such as the spongy coconut- or banana-flavored "cakes" or the banana-leaf-wrapped sweet rice stuffed with banana. Yummy! The proprietor, an older Vietnamese gentleman, is friendly and open - a good face and personality for working in the front with customers. He even offered me a drink (the non-alcoholic kind!) on the house. Side note: I'm sorry to have missed 99 Ranch when it was open and thriving. But there are now little gems of stores and restaurants like Bee's Dessert House, Alex's produce stand, and this one.

I got the special number 4. It was a bed of vermicelli with 4 bite sized pieces of lemon grass chicken and 1 egg roll cut up to look like it was more than 1 piece. It all tasted good... But $8.50 for a few bites of chicken and 1 egg roll is kinda pricy. Good thing the vermicelli filled me up!

I've been here once before... and honestly could not remember how the food was. So, I decided to give it a try again. Got the chicken pho combo with summer roll. Now I know why I didn't remember the food... it is forgettable. And the add-ins that make pho wonderfully deliciously personalized to your taste was lacking. There were little to no thinly sliced onions, I had a total of 3 basil leaves, and a handful of bean sprouts (which I don't mind because I don't like bean sprouts in my pho). The soup base should be lip-smacking, but this wasn't that flavorful either. I also found a piece of melted plastic wrap in my soup... is that what they use to warm their chicken in?... What I did like was the sliced jalapeños that were available on the counter, along with the usual pho suspects (hoisin, Sriracha, etc.). I will stick to Ba-le for my pho and banh-mi cravings.

Breakfast is my least favorite meal of the day. I know, I know, it's touted as the most important meal of the day but quite frankly, it's gotten boring. The eggs, the oatmeal, the toast, the sugar laden pancakes all equal MONOTONY. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz... oh I'm sorry I dozed off for a bit because even breakfast talk is boring me out of my mind! While my husband and I waited for our little one to finish her gymnastics lesson we decided to grab breakfast and I almost decided to just starve rather than eat another boring scrambled egg or pancake. Thankfully I had the brilliant idea to skip to blunch (that's a breakfast lunch combo) by visiting Diem 99 Cafe! Pho and bahn mi instead of a scrambled eggs? Yes please! The man who works the counter at Diem 99 is super cool and it's so delightful to start your morning interacting with someone who shares your same cheerful disposition. We bought combos which came with a drink and spring rolls. Our food came out quickly and although I didn't have high expectations, it was pretty good for 8:30am in the morning! Not the best pho we've ever had, but certainly not the worst and the bahn mi bread was nice and crunchy. The only thing I'd change about my sandwich for next time is to ask for no mayo. Either you're a mayo fan or not, and I am the latter. Now when we are running late I won't have to eat goldfish from my daughter's lunchbox! No offense eggs, you're a great protein, but I need a temporary break from your presence in my everyday life. Happy blunching friends!

A pretty no frills take out Vietnamese joint with the standard pho and vermicelli noodle, rice and salad offerings. I enjoy their smaller offerings like their Vietnamese style bentos, basically a few plates on their regular menu just scaled down just a tad bit. A family owned place, you could tell by their focus on each customer by being very polite and quick to recommend several of their proven dishes. Definitely a proven place to come back to when you're in the area.

The man at the counter is very friendly and chatty. Very kind though. He offered me peanuts a few times. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre at best. I tried the Vietnamese sandwich here. It was terrible. The French bread was not what I expected. It seemed like it was not toasted. It had no crunch to it. The veggies seemed old. And the chicken was flavorless. Honestly, Bale is a better choice. I tried 2 plate lunches here. The lemongrass chicken combo and another combo (special) with fried eggplant. On both occasions I felt it wasn't enough food. I was hungry soon after. Taste-wise, the other than the eggplant it was quite bland. The lemongrass chicken had a lemongrass flavor but I could also taste a unflavored chicken underneath the sauce (if that makes sense). Furthermore, the peanut sauce for the spring roll was a weird texture. Kind of barf looking. I'm officially done eating here.

When I was ordering I could see into the kitchen and saw a worker brushing her teeth in the sink in the kitchen. That's absolutely disgusting.

Catered food from here for an employees going away party. Had many compliments on the food! Food was fresh and delicious. Very friendly staff and wonderful customer service.

My family always gets take-out from here because it is semi-close to home and their food is pretty good! Located in 99 Moanalua (or idk previously known as 99 Ranch), with lots of parking space. We usually order the pho combos? I like the lemongrass chicken plate as well as their summer rolls! The old man there was very nice and always gave me and my brother some tapioca pudding or something. He would recognize us all the time as well and ask how we are doing. Customers like to be recognized and encourages them to come back because of that connection you make. There was two occasions where the old man forgot to give us our summer rolls (*sad*), that is why we always double check we have everything before taking off. It is also recommended to do phone order because it might be faster to just come and pick up your meal. Sometimes they can be busy!

We've always liked this place for its Pho, the spicy kalbi is our fav, but had a sandwich today and think it is probably the best Vietnamese sandwich on Oahu.

Had the summer rolls and Papaya salad. Customer service was great but the food was just, eh, average. I didn't really enjoy the peanut sauce that came with the summer rolls. It wasn't very flavorful.

Had the short rib pho and side of spring rolls! I must say yum!!! I love pho and this place has a good bowl of pho. Served in a styrofoam bowl with just right amount of food. Left very fulfilled and satisfied. The staff are very friendly and I would definitely recommend and surely come back.

I live not too far from here and always look forward to seeing the older man. I don't know why I haven't asked for him name yet? LOL. But food is always awesome and the man is always smiling and notices his customers and greets each and one of you. I had my daughter with me and spoke to her too, which makes me feel great. Normally, when we go, I order different things but never leave without the SUMMER ROLLS with fish sauce :). The pho was AMAZING!!! Too bad, I wish beef tripe was included, maybe I will ask him. I also love the chicken curry on vermicelli noodles..lemongrass chicken with shrimp salad yummmmyyy....reminds me of my moms. At the end of my visit, he would give something free like the banana tapioca but yesterday, he gave me watermelon, super delicioussssss. SO RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!!! very great fast and friendly service and healthy, tasty food. He even refers his customers as ma'am, can't pass this nice man by.

Got a Groupon to this place, otherwise I would never of had any idea it was there. Got the Pho Combo for 9.25 (Pho, 2 Spring Rolls, and a Soft Drink) also got summer rolls. Pho was decent. Spring rolls where surprisingly good. Summer Rolls where terrible. With so much competition in the Pho market I don't think I will be returning.

Love the shakin beef! Order it. Garlic chicken combo plate also very good. My wife loves the stuffed eggplant. The chicken crepes often come with the combo plates, another tasty choice. I heard the pho is good but the other menu items always take precedence over pho for me. The people there are super nice too! The old guy has been the same level of nice for as long as I can remember. The younger gentleman is very nice too.

Since I am no longer working downtown, I HAD to find a pho place in Mapunapuna. My coworkers typically head over to Moanalua 99 (former 99 Ranch) for lunch since there are not many options around here. I have pretty high standards for my pho and I was not expecting restaurant quality pho from this food stall in a food court. It turned out to be one of the best pho broths I have ever enjoyed. I stop there several times a week and have tried many things on their menu but I always gravitate towards the same 2 things: Pho Special meal or the Vietnamese saimin. Their basil and bean sprouts are served in a little plastic bag, so sometimes it is not as abundant and perky as the pho restaurants, but that is my only pho-snob comment. The owners are very nice, and I am so happy to get my pho fix without having to drive to Chinatown.

Solid Viet Namese food and smiling, friendly old man. He loves to share samples of his fare and encourages you to try new things on the menu! He's really nice! All the food is flavorful, not bland or flat. Enjoyable and reliable for good food.

mostly based on pho and sandwiches. very satisfying stuffed sandwiches but its not a sammy place so their choices is the cooked meats instead of the cold cuts and liver pate which they don't serve. pho is satisfactory and the spring rolls could be bigger. very very friendly folks who just want to satisfy their customers with a smile

Diem 99 Cafe is located in 99 Moanalua (formerly called 99 Ranch). They have a variety of choices that your typical pho places offers. From pho to spring rolls on noodles, they have it. They also have "bentos" that are cheaper than the regular food choices, but on a smaller scale. So if you want something quick and cheap, the bentos are the way to go. The bentos range from lemongrass chicken to spring rolls. My personal favorite from Diem 99 Cafe is their pho meal. This is the best deal you can get here! You get pho, spring rolls, and a medium drink all for $9! You can't go wrong with that. Their pho overall is okay. Very tasty, but then again i'm not a pho expert. The service is pretty good and the food comes out real quick.

I've eaten at Diem 99 five times and each time I get the same thing over and over again. I haven't tried any other dishes, only the Tofu Pho, so I can't speak for the other dishes. The pho is served up in a styrofoam bowl of small to medium-sized portion ($6.95) with a side of bean sprouts, a sprig of basil, one to two leaves of the Vietnamese herb and a small slice of lime. The herbs are served up in a small plastic bag. For non-pho eaters, this means you usually pick and choose what you would like to dump into your noodle soup. I normally dump everything in, including the lime. The broth was pretty light and in much need of spicing up. Condiments are located at the front counter. I normally dump massive amounts of Hoi Sin sauce and hot pepper oil in my soup. This pho definitely needed a lot (see photo). Service is pretty fast. Your food is placed on a orange plastic tray and you find you find a plastic patio table to sit on to dine. Not the best, but not too bad, either. They don't get five-stars because their price for portion isn't that great, they serve food in styrofoam containers and the broth is a bit watery...but in a pinch it will do.

I always get the same thing, and it's consistently good. I can eat it in one sitting, which makes this lunch meal $9. That's pretty expensive for lunch for just me, considering I can eat $3 worth from Wendys and be good. The plus side is that its way healthier and make it fresh. Their spring rolls are really good too. I've never eaten their pho, because...well.. to be honest, I don't like pho. *ducks* I know, I know! I'm the weirdest asian ever! If the old man is working the counter, I always eat here. I love him, and he's so nice. I definitely can't pass up eating here if he's at the front. On my most recent visit, I bought waffle rolls. Now, these things look simple, but they're delicious! So worth whatever minimum amount they charge for these things. My $9 lunch just soared to $12.50. I'm so bringing home lunch tomorrow. One of the better places in Ranch 99, don't forget the side of spring rolls!

First time trying Diem 99 Cafe. Had the pho tai, and Mom had the Spring Roll Combo. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Used old veggies and their rice noodles must have been prepped for more than a day. Spring rolls were not cooked to order so they were soggy. Priced like other Vietnamese restaurants, so the value in quality is non existent. Unfortunate.

Lunch special lemongrass pork. The meal came with 2 fried spring rolls and rice. At around $8, this was another humongous meal that I easily split into 2 meals. Heard from co-workers that the portions of the pho have been getting smaller and less beef is making its way into the bowl.

I like Diem 99 Cafe. The service is prompt and friendly, the food tasty. I tried the stuffed tofu combo and it was...interesting. It came with the basics--shrimp rolls and a side salad. The stuffed tofu was unlike anything I've ever had. Doesn't mean that I didn't like it...it was good; I just didn't care for the texture. This is on me though, nothing against Diem 99. Food texture sort of drives my food tastes--something can taste rad but if it's a texture that I don't like or am familiar with, then I tend to not dig the dish. So the stuffed tofu tasted great...it's stuffed with pork and shrimp bits..sort of reminded me of pork hash. But because the tofu was crispy (deep-fried tofu skin) and the stuffing was ground meat, essentially, it was all a bit too gritty for my liking. Again, flavor wise, yummy. If texture doesn't bother you, I recommend it. My hubby seemed to like it. They pour a sauce over it that was pretty tasty too...reminded me of oyster sauce with a hint of teriyaki sauce? I could be totally wrong. In the end, I recommend Diem 99 if you're at Ranch Market. I will go there again, but will order something different. Fellow Yelpers seem to like the Pho...perhaps I will try that next time :)

Nice old man always gives us free stuff to eat and free banana tapioca when we eat there :) Very grandfatherly. The broth has yummy chicken, nonfishy, not too salty flavor. Their pho is just as good and tasty as places in Chinatown. Ya'll are picky. Stuffed eggplant, ono. Spring rolls, ono. Their combo plates have salad and noodles, so I feel healthier when I eat here. One of my fave places to go to at Ranch.

Diem 99 Cafe Just had the Lettuce Wrap plate: spring rolls with lettuce, cucumber, pickled radish, light noodles, sauce, and refreshing basal leaves...place ingredients in lettuce leaf and wrap-dip YUM!!!!! Kind of messy so you might want to bring this home to really "pppiiiiggggg" out in the comfort of your own home. Definitely not a dish for a first date but otherwise perfection! Approx. $8 Basal leaf is a new flavor for me but I put 1 or 2 leaves in my lettuce wrap- refreshing! I know I should try the other dishes but I'm stuck on lettuce wrap plate for now! *See photos for the Lettuce Wrap Plate.

The "Adorable Old Man" that everyone talks about is why I keep going back to this place. Sadly, I haven't seen him lately, but the other workers are nice. The Pho is pretty good. I like the lemongrass chicken with vermicelli, summer rolls. and waffle rolls. Will try other items on the menu, but it's always so hard for me to choose. This is one of the two places I like to eat at 99.

  • David C.

Addicted to the tofu curry. Get it to go and the curry will come in a separate container from the rice/noodles and pickled veggies. The older gentleman who works there markets the place well gives away free stuff all the time. Banana tapioca ftw!

  • Sharina N.

The older gentleman that works at Diem 99 is so super sweet! I just wanted to hug him. I ordered the spring roll with vermicelli and my son ordered the tofu curry. Both meals were super yummy. This is the only place eat from when we visit this place (it is a warehouse full of restaurants in Mapunapuna). He gave us tapioca to try for free and free drinks. He was just as sweet as they come and the food was extra good!

I ate the teriaki beef bowl because I heard it was what they're known for. To be honest, it was just OK. The meat was sort of dry and I had three pieces of grissle, which is a lot for a bowl size meal. The service was great, and the people were super friendly. I've eated here several times with much better foods such as the seafood over crunchy noodles or lemon grass dishes...yummy! I'll be back and hope to give a higher rating on my next visit.

Love this place. The older man who works there is so adorable! He's very friendly. I love the stuffed eggplant. The only complaint I have is their spring rolls are kinda small. Can't wait to try their other dishes.

  • S D.

lemongrass chicken, stuffed eggplant, spring roll, tossed salad, Mac salad and rice. Kinda disappointing... but I have to say... I had leftover lemongrass chicken the next day... It tasted better cold... guess I gotta eat it the next day cold.

Awesome PHO!! I have a bunch of Pho places that I love and frequent and Diem 99 is one of my faves! Awesome service and awesome people running this restaurant. Diem 99 Cafe is located inside of 99 ranch market and has tons of seating and tons of parking. I definetely recommend this place for some good food!

I love Diem 99 Cafe! They're located close to my workplace, so it's a great option for lunch. Their BBQ pork/spring roll/vermicelli bento is the perfect size for me, and it's so good! Plus, the man who takes the orders behind the counter is so nice! Good service really makes a big difference.

Needing a break from my cupcake frosting shock ( yelp.com/biz/cake-coutur… ), my bf and I decided to eat at Mapunapuna where the old 99 Ranch store used to be. The building still has a food court so you have a variety of food places to choose from. I wanted to eat something fairly fresh so we opted to eat pho at Diem 99. I ended up ordering the summer roll and the bf ordered the beef pho combo that included a drink and 2 pieces of spring roll ($9.xx). The food was ok, a three star at best. The summer roll that I ordered was a bit tiny for $4.xx. The peanut sauce was sort of bland too. I wish they gave more though because I love peanut sauce. The spring rolls were decently good but I've tasted better. As for the pho, I actually liked it. It was sort of salty. I've had better broths but I couldn't stop myself from drinking it. Don't be shocked though when you receive your pho on a styrofoam bowl. Overall, I probably wouldn't go back unless I was near the area. Downtown isn't too far away for a pho fix. By the way, the owner is really friendly. We told him that it was our first time eating there so he told his grandson? to give us spring rolls to try, free of charge.

Another place in the old 99 Ranch that im forced to frequent. Which btw i only realized that the name has changed to 99 Moanalua. Not sure when the name changed but i guess its more appropriate since the actually 99 Ranch store went out of business years ago...on to the food! Bleh...its okay but id rather spend my $8 somewhere else to get better pho and more of it. The broth is okay but theres just so many other places that has such better soup. Plus its a take out counter food court style so you dont get the true pho experience of potentially eating pho out of an unwashed bowl. Maybe the allure of that is just missing when eating pho out of a styrafoam bowl with a cheap plastic spoon. In either case the pho is pretty limited when it comes to choices, no fat brisket here which sucks! Quantity is pretty small for what you pay and the broth is mediocre at best (IMHO). On the good side, the other usually menu items...spring/summer rolls, etc, vermacelli noodle dishes and stuff is okay, but nothing special. The people who work there are really really nice though. I think its a family business and all the workers are related...they are just so nice and friendly. This sweet little old vietnamese man who im guessing is the owner and patriarch of the family is just so nice and grandpa-like you just want to give him a hug...or he just reminds me of my grandpa. I sort of feel sorry about giving him only two stars, but hey! Its about the food right? Plus if he was my grandpa, and my grandpa was vietnamese...id bet his broth would be better.

Bottom Line: Decent Pho, but the other dishes are sub-par. Diem Cafe is one of the counter kitchens (is that even a term? If not, I've coined the phrase right here! I want 10 cents every time someone says that!) that line the warehouse that used to be 99 Ranch in Mapunapuna. They offer Vietnamese cuisine here amongst the variety of asian counter kitchens. I've had the stuffed eggplant, the lemon grass chicken, and the seafood pho. Lets start with the stuffed eggplant - it was cold and greasy. Hmm...not a great start for one of their "specials." This dish was served with a few greens with a typical Vietnamese dressing, and that was the best thing on my plate (and considering even the greens/dressing combo wasn't that good ) that's not saying much. Moving on to the Lemongrass Chicken...it was cold. It was greasy. See a theme forming? OK, so what brought me back to try the Pho? Well, I like Pho, and I figured before I write Diem Cafe off, I have to try the Pho - maybe it's their signature dish - after all, they make the claim of having the best Vietnamese Noodles. Well, they also made that claim with their rice, and it was a busted claim too. Anyway, I had the seafood pho, and it was very light and delicate. The noodles were also good, and it was served with a good amount of garnishes (basil, sprouts, etc.) It was a little light for my taste, so I fixed up with some of the sauces they offer on the side, and it spiced it right up to where I enjoyed it. The noodles were a small, but fair sized portion. The seafood portioning...well, let's just say that I got three small shrimp, one slice of squid, 1 fish ball - cut in half, and 1 inch section of crab leg. This was a not terrible, but I was expecting more since the picture ofthis menu item had on the wall showed all kinds of seafood claws, fins, tentacles, and stuff floating around. Actually thinking back to how there wasn't much taste to the seafood, how it was all overcooked, the uncleaned shrimp...it was probably a good thing that there wasn't more. So Diem Cafe for me was a hit, and mostly miss proposition. I probably won't go back unless I have to. And then if I do, I'll be having just a plain sliced beef Pho. Cash only!

The food is good (rice cake with coconut milk is delicious!) but the little grandpa working the cash register is the best. He is so kind: offering little snacks like sesame cookies ("They're from Poland!" is what he told me) and halves of summer rolls. He is a hard worker and a genuine person. 5 stars because of him!

Tried their stuffed bitter melon plate and it was edible but nothing special. The stuffing was bland and the texture was not so pleasing.

Ordered seafood on crispy noodle because it sounded so good and the picture looked so ono. Big disappointment! Noodles were weird, not even crispy, hardly any seafood, vegetables not fresh and gravy had a strange flavor. I'm not one to waste food but the leftovers aren't coming home with me! I will not be eating here again!

I always come here and I keep coming back First of all I always like to order from the male cashier he always has a smile on his face which is a great!! Service is very fast I would say about 5-8min wait time for your food. Food is really good I usually come here for the pho or their sandwiches.

Yummeh!!! Yummeh!!! Yummeh!!! Bonus: the owner is sooo nice! Okay...so I don't look my best being that I have a terrible cold. As soon as I walked up to the counter, the owner said, "Pho!" (Yes...I do get food from Diem 99 quite a bit). He then said he was going to make me something special because I was sick (told you I might be looking my best). In any case, he gave me a cup of this warm liquid with a whole bunch of fresh ginger in it. I was kind of scared to drink it because there was so much ginger!! I didn't want to offend him, so I drank it. It was sweet, warm, and had a lovely ginger taste (all of a sudden, I could actually taste!). I immediately felt warm and "clear" - if that makes any sense. He explained that since I was cold, I needed to bring the warmth and heat in...thus, the ginger. Oh my goodness... it was so delicious the more I drank of it! I could breathe easier! I didn't feel as congested! I forgot about my pho! Now, where are you going to find service like that?! I asked him to tell me how to make what he gave me. He didn't really say...just mentioned ginger, honey and ... I missed the rest. It might just be hot water, for all I know - but it sure didn't taste like it! In any case, I left looking forward to enjoying my pho...and feeling a bit better because of his kindness! =) That's why I love going there! Comfort food and comfort all around! =) =) =)

The food may be good but I'm disappointed with the portion. One half of the spring roll on vermicelli combo was filler cucumber and bean sprouts. Feel robbed.

I LOVE THE VEGETARIAN FOOD HERE!!! Too bad I don't live in Hawaii anymore ;,( I loved coming here almost every single day most especially because of the kind older gentleman that always makes me feel so great about everything. He is so kind and caring! He loves to talk hehehe and I don't mind at all. I mean, they are all nice there but he was my favorite ^_^. My absolute favorite dish in the world here is the Monk's Dish. omg. at first it was a weird taste that I didn't understand and I thought I would never get it again but I found myself seeking that taste again.. then next thing you know, I was HOOKED! ...i mean. I would eat it for lunch and dinner almost every. single day. lol. idk I might be the only one but anyway, their lemongrass tofu and veggie curry are also super amazing. and spring rolls... and the rice cake dessert!!!! My first stop when I come back to honolulu for sure! and it's like 2 minutes away from my house. I'm probably gonna get 2 of the Monk's dish ..yea, just for me :)

So being Vietnamese (well half) and growing up in a dominantly Vietnamese household, I know good Vietnamese food. I've tried their beef stew and their summer rolls and they are pretty decent. Definitely not my favorite on the island, but it is good enough for me to come back. The only thing that bothers me is the man taking my order in the front did not speak Vietnamese. When I go to the Vietnamese place, I like to order in Vietnamese just to make sure my food is it exactly what I want it to be. So needless to say I was extremely disappointed when he couldn't speak Vietnamese. The dipping sauce wasn't the typical dipping sauce, but what do you expect getting Vietnamese food from a place where you can't order in Vietnamese.

I'm a fan of their food. Been here lots and love the bbq and lemon grass chicken. Shaken beef over vermicelli is delicious... Wanna adopt cool ole fella, probably the owner, as my grampa... :)
