man......hate to leave a bad review but the place needs improvements. Dirty floors, tiles misaligned, paper signs on the wall (ghetto), mop left out, shirts untucked, hair down, food was ok, water from tap, rice mooshy, servers hands wet, touching inside bowl too. If i were owner, id renovate & set some standards.. lots of potential tho. Good location, prices good and parking. Lady was nice tho..bagged the food.

For the price, you can't beat the food! I always enjoy the food, but this last time while all the flavors were delicious, it was just a hint too salty. The hot tea helped cut the salt. I am sensative to salt, because the man said it was great! We had the crispy gau gee mein with crispy noodles, which was served all separate so that the gau gee and noodles didn't get soggy, the duck with steamed buns (bao), and spicy eggplant. Everything was fresh and served hot. There was enough food left over for two more meals for the two of us!

So easy to call and place an order from this restaurant located in Pearl City at the Waimalu Shopping Center. Like all great restaurants, they will help you figure out how much food you'll need for your potluck or party. Yeah; shucks, I always forget the basic fuud calculation formula :P Today I ordered and picked up a small pan of cold ginger chicken. It was ready when I got there and I was able to pay for it in a snap [yep, they take credit cards, and cash of course ;) ] Only thing I wish is that I checked the container of ginger sauce. Perhaps I shoulda woulda coulda asked for a half or quarter container more of their delicious sauce. Well, too late :P I'm at my TV-gate (television tailgate) to watch today's UH vs. FSU away game lol But in any case, *everyone* here says, "Jules, the ginger chicken is DELICIOUSSSS...! :D" "Awesomeness! :D" is what I say hehe :D I'll certainly be back for more. Reviews here say their crispy gau gee is ENORMOUS which I'll just have to try soon! :)

I have been wanting to come here for a while, and I'm glad to say I finally did. Their portions are BIG and their service is quick. There are abou 200 things to order from on the menu, so it shouldn't be too hard to find something you like. I ordered the beef chow fun and the wor gauge min. Both were very good and the price wasn't bad. their gauge is big and tasty, but the ones in the soup are better. If you are in the area and are looking for a good sit down Chinese place, give this place a try.

I enjoy visiting this place because it's out of the way and the food is always reasonably priced. It's tucked away in a line of restuarants at Waimalu shopping center just a few doors down from Chun Wah. The restaurant is usually not crowded with a generous number of tables and booths to select from. The one thing that keeps me coming back is their gau-gee. You haven't seen large gau-gee till you've seen theirs! It's always served hot and the filling is tasty, loaded with pork. For those who are on a budget, there's a plethora of different plate you can select from their lunch special (house noodles, two won ton, sweet sour spare ribs, kau yuk, rice and almond float for dessert) for less than $8 or their mixed plate or dinner plate or lunch special where you get to select two entrees from a list. They also have a wide variety of ala cart items to choose from. The service is excellent and folks are constantly stopping by to refill water or remove dirty plates. If nothing else, come by to try the best gaugee on the island!

Their food is still good after all these years, the price can be a little high for Chinese food but, I must say that they are pretty nice compared to most Chinese Restaurants. Actually friendly. LOL!! They are known for have delicious and huge Gau Gee, great to take to parties cause it's always a big hit! Would I recommend them to my friends? Yes Would I return? Yes

Waimalu Chop Suey is no different from your run-of-the-mill neighborhood Chinese restaurant except for one very important thing: CRISPY GAU GEE! If Crispy Gau Gees from every Chinese restaurant on the island had to compete in the Hunger Games, Waimalu Chop Suey's Gau Gee would survive and win! How exactly? It would eat all the other gau gee! The Crispy Gau Gee at Waimalu Chop Suey is MASSIVE! You could fit two...or maybe even three...other gau gee into it! Crispy, stuffed generously with flavorful pork and veggies, this gau gee can't be beat! My family and I often pick up 10-12 gau gee for family parties and that is more than enough for 20+ people. We cut them in half so they will be easier to eat, but just half a Waimalu Chop Suey Crispy Gau Gee is more than enough! Hurry and eat them before they eat you!

We flew to HNL and this was our first stop because it's one of my mom's favorite spots to eat crispy gau gee. We got take out crispy gau gee mein. The ordering over the phone was easy and our order was done right when we requested. The crispy gau gee was huge and gone in a few minutes! Yum! A small problem was that the mustard that came with was watery and flavorless.

Great place in this area for your Chinese food cravings! Lots of seating and tables and great for family dinners or parties. I love their Mapo tofu here! When I went there to order take out, it was rather warm inside because I think the AC was off. Other than that staff are friendly and there is lots of parking where they are located.

To be honest with you the food there is pretty good however the people that work there have a personal problem. went there to eat with my husband while he was outside smoking I went in with my Walker which incidentally your bathroom is not need for a handicapped person to walk in the wheelchair very disappointing on my way to the restroom the lady came running after me as though I was going to set the building on fire and I had said to her when I walked in the door that I was going to the restroom first and then I was going to sit to eat it was such an embarrassing situation and I was so upset I just left without eating that was extremely rude and thoughtless on their part

I got a tray of their legendary gau-gee for my birthday party and before I could even blink they were all eaten! My guests were all completely blown away by the size of each gau-gee anc ries of "it's so big" followed by giggles of "that's what she said" were heard throughout the room. I definitely recommend calling ahead if you're getting a take out order. Parking can be a little hard to come by in this very busy shopping center especially during peak weekend hours!

It seems things are a bit different at WCS. Fewer booths, more four top tables and family size tables of eight. The menu has changed too. However, their war gau gee min is still delectable. HUGE portion. Lots of veggies & noodles. The broth is so good, my husband drank most of it, and he's a FINE cook! Check it out. I think you'll be glad you did. Prices are fair. Huge bowl of war gau gee min was $10.75. Plus the waitress brought us each a bowl of light tapioca dessert for free.

Waimalu Chop Suey was one of my all time favorite grind places for Gau Gee Mein! I was 1st turned on to this place by one of my co-workers in the late 80's, and since then, I've made the run here for either the soft Gau Gee Mein, or the crispy Gau Gee Mein............a ton of times! For a few years (10 years) I did boycott this place, as I found a cockaroach in my soft Gau Gee Mein. The worst part about all of this was I had eaten all my my meal, and was fishing for the scraps in my bowl, when I scooped up the roach. Needless to say, I was pretty GROSSED OUT & PISSED!!! When I told the owner about the cockaroach, they asked me if I wanted another? I'm like WTF????? Then I stopped coming here for many years. Years have passed..........and .I still haven't forgotten about the cockaroach incident, but sometimes you have to let by gone's, be by gone's. I finally went back one day & of course the food has not changed...................I know recently the original owners had sold this restaurant, and now there is new owners. Food quality is still the same (see pics)............and of course when I went here, I had to get the crispy Gau Gee Mein! HUGE generous portions..........so be ready to EAT!!! Lots of parking, as it is located at the Waimalu Shopping Center. Check 'em out!!!

Walked in around 3pm and ordered take out. Shrimp fried rice, Chow mein, Honey walnut shrimp, Beef broccoli and of course the Crispy gau gee. Waited around 15 minutes, used their restroom which was nice and clean. They had the big screen tv on, wait didn't seem that long. The waitress brought my order and they gave me a FREE order of rice cake for waiting!! Not a single piece but an order of it! Wow! Took it home and devoured everything! Haha! Everything was ono! Can't get over the size of the crispy gau gee, so tasty too!

Very good lunch. We've had a difficult time finding vegetarian friendly places to eat. We stumbled upon this place for lunch while going to Baldwins for shaved ice. The twin mushroom and vegetable dish was fantastic as was the eggplant and tofu. Service was great too.

Agreed this is pretty much the run of the mill local chop suey house. I knew what to expect in the way of food. However I was sorely disappointed with their customer service. Hence 3 stars as the food is decent. Indeed the gau gee are some of the largest around town. But I could have done with out the waitress' rebuttal that my gau gee was freshly fried. Then why was it cold to the touch & why would I even bring it up? I asked if she could bring me a fresh one. What I got in return was the same bitten gau gee that was re-fried. This made it not only oilier but crispier to the point it was too hard. Ok, granted we know Chinese are always looking for the cheapest way out but, really, what would it have cost to give me two fresh gau gee.

Was starving and stumbled in. Hubby was craving Chinese. Cheap eats, generous portions, and great service! The place is a little run down and can use some remodeling though.

Date night with Dawn! We chose this place because we thought we could order Filipino food. Nope! It's only for parties. Found that out only after we sat. The place was quite empty. We were escorted to the booth by our waitress. As we looked through the menu she suggested the dinner for two, but that looked like a lot of food and we didn't know what they had for dessert. We asked eventually but didn't want what they offered. We ordered and asked for our checks separately. I ordered the soft won ton mein ( yelp.com/user_local_phot… ). Not what I had expected. I expected a won ton mein. It was good but I guess there's seafood since there was shrimp in the won ton. No! But I got through it. As we were finishing up she came by and served us two bowls of dessert--the tapioca, if I recall. We thought she had made a mistake by giving that to us but she said it was on them. Thank you. I finished it though there was some sort of aftertaste that I couldn't shake off. Dawn didn't like it at all but she ate finished it because she'd feel bad if she wasted it and the waitress saw. Our waitress marked which ordered what. At the cashier's counter we saw that they had an over-sized lobster. The cashier was friendly and talked with us even about how she got the lobster. Why bring it to the restaurant though? They have a special that deals with lobsters! Lol. I thought the lobster was cute. Need to go to Fun Factory and get myself one.

Crap! Crap! And more Crap! We just got home from here and will NEVER be going back! The food was HORRENDOUS! The kids got the dinner special and the Char Sui was nothing but fat. We ordered Waimalu Special chow mein, and not only did the shrimp in it taste spoiled, but the gravy tasted oily. The fried rice had a funky taste to it. I thought it was made with Jasmine rice, but the hubby doesn't think so. Either way it was gross, we were given almond float, about the only thing that tasted good. We were seated by a table used for prepping gau gee, or so we assumed since there was a tray of uncooked gau gee on it. The whole time we were there it sat there uncovered in plain view, while the staff hustled by it with plates both clean and dirty. We had a tea pot, but no cups, and when it came time to leave we were asked if we wanted to take the leftovers with us (all but a serving of the chow mein and 75% of the fried rice was left and there were 5 of us dining), we refused and only then did they ask if everything was ok. I explained we didn't like it, they blamed the rice noodles (I love rice noodles as I have gluten sensitivities). They didn't offer any compensation and we paid the check in FULL before leaving. Awful customer service, awful food, and all around awful experience. I wish I didn't have to give it a star at all.

I can always count on this place for good food at a great price. The crispy gau gee is HUGE, and the walnut shrimp is delicious. Of course, they have many items to choose from, so don't expect to try most of their menu in only a few sittings.

I have eaten food from here before, and enjoyed the large gau gee that I was given. Since I live a ways away from the restaurant, we decided to make and adventure out to eat there. I entered the restaurant, and sat in a corner table with my service dog. She was wearing her official vest, and had an ID tag hanging from the vest. I was asked a few times about her validity by the hostess and answered all her questions, although they were extremely personal and other patrons could hear our exchange. Another waitress walked by and made a rude statement about the dog sitting under the table, and how she didn't look like a service dog. The hostess came back over and asked us to leave. At this point I was so embarrassed and angry (I have severe depression and anxiety) I got up to leave. I asked the hostesses name and for a card. She loudly exchanged words with me. In my 6 years of having a service dog, this is the first time I was denied service and treated this way. I am appalled and have made a complaint with our local disabilities rights center. As long as this restaurant has been open, they should be well aware of the laws that apply here.

My siblings & I have this weird family tradition that's repeated EVERY December, we're obsessed with watching the TBS special: 24 hours of "A Christmas Story." My favorite movie scene is when the Parker family eats Christmas dinner at an empty Chinese restaurant & tries roasted duck for the first time. When le boyfriend & I ate an early dinner at Waimalu Chop Suey, the empty (pre-dinner rush) side of the restaurant made me feel like Christmas arrived early this year. If "variety is the spice of life" then Chinese food is the poster child of to this idiom; on route to the Chinese restaurant that serves "the biggest Crispy Gau Gee of your life", le boyfriend attempted to reduce my original order: Beef Broccoli, Cake Noodle, Crispy Gau Gee & Honey Walnut Shrimp to three items. I spent the entire car ride, trying to unsuccessfully reduce my order & even thought about using Jedi mind tricks to convince le boyfriend we needed all 4 items. After the menus were handed to us, I could hardly contain my excitement when I read, "Beef Broccoli Cake Noodle" on the menu & my inner fat kid fist-pumped until our food arrived. I hate to admit whenever hungry strikes, my eyes have a tendency of being bigger than my stomach but it felt like I died & went to food heaven: the noodles were extra crunchy, the shrimp was cooked to perfection, the vegetables were fresh & I've never seen so much Crispy Gau Gee in my life. If you have serious Chinese food cravings, I highly recommend a visit to Waimalu Chop Suey. In all of my Chinese food consumption, they have the best Honey Walnut Shrimp my lips have touched & their nickname "House of Gau Gee" lives up to their name. If you decide to take on the beast & order 8 pieces of Crispy Gau Gee, be prepared to enjoy them as a snack later on.

I must say that Waimalu Chop Suey has some of the best Chinese food on the island. We love their huge gau gee, which can be a meal all by itself. We love the lobster dinner for two. Lots of tasty food at a good price.

Yucky greasy food! Ordered the Orange chicken and it was hard and chewy tried to return it so they can fix it but owner said he can't do that! Just threw my money away! Terrible customer service!! Wish I could give no zeros! :(

In addition to being ginormous, Waimalu Chop Suey's crispy gau gee is ALSO DELICIOUS. The size was a hook for me- never before had I gone to WCS until just this passed Christmas, and I had lived in Pearl City for 17 years lol. So my bff and I gave it a shot and ordered one of those 'everything' kinds of dishes- kao look, crispy gau gee, chow mein, steamed rice, and deep fried shrimp. Everything tasted alright, nothing spectacular, save the crispy gau gee. One thing that brought the experience down was their hot sour soup. That buggah was soooooouuuuuuuurrrr!! You couldn't taste anything but sourness. The heat was perfect, I love me my spicy soups when I'm sick. But the overwhelming sourness made this puppy hard to swallow. I wouldn't order it again.

Stopped by to get takeout here because the Ohana BBQ was out of yakisoba and Chun Wah Kam was closed. The service was kind of unfriendly but the food came quickly. Chicken fried rice came in a generous portion for a reasonable price (under $8). Very simply prepared: white rice, egg, peas and carrots with salt and little if any shoyu. Next time I'd lose the chewy gristly chicken thigh strips! Was good enough that I was genuinely sad that I had I left Hawaii before my family did and had to surrender the leftovers to them. :)

This is my favorite Chinese place on the island. I love their gau gee, plus they're huge... but there's a very complex flavor to their kung pao chicken, we love their honey walnut shrimp, pork and peas were SO SO good. They seem to go above and beyond at this restaurant, making sure their food is just a tad different, still authentic, and filled with flavor. We always come here if we can, and we love that there are pictures of everything. To top it all off, the place is CLEAN (thank goodness!) and the servers and everyone that works there are nice and downright friendly!! Every time we go our waitress brings us a free tapioca desert. I took my mom there the last time she was in town, and she is infamously hard to please as she has high standards. She loved it too! Keep doing what you're doing WCS!

  • Nelson Q.

Stopped in for dinner and got our usual 3 dishes-Cold Ginger Chicken, Crispy Cake Noodles with mixed seafood, and Crispy Gau Gee. Chicken was delicious, but cake noodles were just okay, kinda on the bland side. I was hoping the Gau Gee was gonna be good as other reviews mention. Just about every table had an order, and they were the size of my hand, but bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. The texture was too rubbery and didn't have enough flavor..unfortunately with the new management and kitchen staff, the quality suffers.....ALOHA!!! Craving Chinese food in the Pearl City, Waimalu, Aiea area? This is the place! As soon as we got there, we were seated right away. Service was timely, the restaurant was clean (a little cold -- we were a little loud about mentioning this and they immediately acknowledged that they heard us and toned it down to accommodate us), the food cultivated my craving, and we reached our goal of leaving FULL! You must get their Crispy Gau Gee! You know how some restaurants have tiny, little ones that only have about a pinch full of meat? This place has GIGANTIC ones that are packed with meat and I swear, I couldn't even finish one. So these were great to take back home to pack for home lunch.

worst service ever. first of all the ladies that work there are flat out rude. they dont know how to serve their customers. they give their customers rude looks if they are standing in their way and dont even say excuse me. they drop our plates in front of you not even gently. rushed our service when we paid for a party for 3 big tables. they are rude and didnt even bring us all of our food and rushed us out of their restaurant. when we asked for our refund for the food we didnt get the manager said no and offered to give us the dishes three days after the party. the lady also spilled water all over my boyfriend and table. i dont even think they deserve stars. worst service ever experienced. dont even bother going here for special events or to eat. their food isnt even all that.

My buddy was craving Chinese and thanks to Yelp we found it! We came around 7pm and it was not crowded at all which was great because we were both starving. I ordered the Dinner Plate which was under $9. It came with a ton of food! I barely put a dent in it before I had to call it quits and just take the rest home. Everything was really tasty but the sweet and sour spare ribs was a bit dry and hard to chew. My friend however loved their fried rice and their fried shrimp was awesome. Service here was great and our food came in a timely manner. Nice little place for din din. Thanks Waimalu!

  • Keith K.

Honestly? The only reason I keep coming back to this place is that my wife likes it. That lobster dinner for two is over-rated and most of the food we've ever ordered is so-so. With that said, I do like the Kun Pao Shrimp. Maybe my wife will start liking another place... :-)

  • Venecia H.

I felt so uncomfortable eating here the entire time. I was really hesitant because one reviewer complained of seeing a roach in their food. Nonetheless, It was the only place nearby and I was craving Chinese so I decided to give Chop Suey a try. It was very dirty on the inside, especially the floors. Even after I noted this, I still continued on to order dinner. My husband asked about General Tso, which was not on their menu (BIG MISTAKE) They agreed to prepare it for him, but there was nothing sweet about his entree. I ordered chicken and broccoli for myself and beef and broccoli for my son. They both tasted quite similar. The food wasn't so bad, but the filth was a total turn off for me. I probably won't be dining here again.

The place was clean and inviting, except for a pile of boxes in the corner. Also I don't like to watch Sports Center while I eat. How about some music? Other than those two small things, one of my fav spot in Pearl City for Ono grinds.

This place is OK We ordered a beef chow mein dish and sadly it not too shabby; however the dead fly in our dish was enough to turn our appetites off. We showed it to the waitress and she closely examined it with her finger and asked us to choose another dish from the menu. At least they didn't charge us for the chow mein. =/

  • Sharon A.

I went there when they had just changed owners, there was a small roach in my food, like other reviews, I could pick something else off the menu. I was still charged. Went there last night (12/18/13) only because there was a line to Pho Five O, ordered a noodle combo that came with fried squid and a soda. The squid was good, but noodles seemed like it came out of a package like the ones Sun noodles sell. I expect something more from a long time Chinese restaurant.

I've lived in Aiea for over 30 years and until about two years ago I ate at Waimalu Chop Suey only two or three times. I just wasn't that impressed with the food back then, and there were better Chinese restaurants. Fast forward to today, and Waimalu Chop Suey is now my go-to Chinese restaurant in Aiea. I believe they're under new ownership, which could account for the fact that the food is much better tasting than before. I love their Beef with Chinese Peas (hint: ask for the peas to be half-cooked, they retain their crunch), the Roast Pork, and the Wor Won Ton Mein with Vegetables. Their crispy gau gees are the biggest I have ever seen...they're like gau gee on steroids. The filling is well-seasoned and meaty and not filled with fillers or fatty pork like I've had at other restaurants. The ambiance of the restaurant leaves much to be desired, but at least it looks clean. If you want delicious Chinese food in Aiea/Pearl City, this is your place to go.

Came here for my 22nd birthday. It was my first time here, but my family has been here before. They suggested we go here and I was down. Im not a real picky person and even though it was my birthday, I went along with it. Service was friendly and good. Food was pretty tasty and came out quick. Instead of getting that already planned out $80 meal for 6-8 people, we decided to make our own. Our bill was $100, but it was all food that we eat. My family is full of picky eaters so this worked for us. There is a special deal where if you spend over $70 or $75, you get a FREE LOBSTER. This may interest some of you out there. Overall, this place was good. I recommend this place for families or big groups of people. They seem to be able to handle very well :)

Review 200! It could have gone to one of the five star restaurants in Vegas or LA but Hawaii is my home and I've been eating at Waimalu Chop Suey for as long as I can remember. A true one trick pony. Only one dish stands out on the entire menu, crispy gau gee. This is the self proclaimed "house of gau gee" afterall. Huge! Packed with a simple ground pork / MSG filling that cooks to a firm, rubbery texture. The interior is often surrounded by hot oil (the result of the frying oil being too cool) but the outside is always crispy and golden brown. So it's not the fine quality dim sum of top Chinese eateries. Who cares. This is old school and just plain good eats. It's also good cold the next day when the oil has had time to soak into everything (just think of cold pizza). Unfortunately, other menu items fail to impress with the lunch and dinner plates being the worst anywhere with their bland noodles, oily fried rice, and old tasting spare ribs. Admittedly through the years, I've found a small roach in my food once or twice so I still avoid noodle dishes. It's not unsanitary, its just an old building. New owners. Same cooks. Same friendly workers. Is my high rating biased. Sure. But as I've always held, the best food experiences are with family and friends. How can you knock a restaurant that has been a part of that your whole life?

This review is for the Gau Gee only.... DAMN they have some huge Gau gee!!! each one is like a meal. i could eat 2 of these, with some rice, and be full. i just had one at a potluck, and wholly cow. the sheer size is intimidating, but once you conquer this gigantic gau gee, you'll only want more! now.... i have to actually go to Waimalu chop suey to try the food. hopefully, their food is as good as the gau gee!

We attended a family dinner here last night for 22 people....... THE GOOD - friendly staff, the biggest gau gee you have ever seen, the free lobster with black bean after you spend $50, the free fortune cookies. THE BAD - see my cousin's photo.........the fly in the abalone soup - YUCK!!!!!

HOLY GAU GEE BATMAN!! Those things are huge!! Family style Chinese food. Not the best, but still oh so good. The walnut shrimp is sweeter than other places, but they caramelize the walnuts and the sauce for it is pretty dang good. Combination fried rice was okay, but the portion was kinda small for the price. Lemon chicken tasted fresh and lemony. It had the texture of karaage chicken which my dad LOVED. They had this special where you buy $50 worth of food and you get a free lobster. The only seafood I eat is shrimp, so I didn't care for that. Old school Chinese restaurant. Grab the crispy gau gee just to see it's massive size. Seriously what the heck. They're so big! 3.5 stars.

WTF?!? Waimalu CS used to be THE Chinese restaurant when I was run by the original owners but now after a few years of change of ownership it really has gone down hill! Prices went up, portions went smaller....and most of all HORRIBLE customer service!!!! There is a Filipino woman who sometimes does the cash out/cashier and she is suck a sour "you know what"! On this day we ordered take out and they got our order all wrong, made us wait another 15 min and then wanted to charge us $2 more for extra ginger sauce. Lol!!! Seriously?!? It's so crazy how bad it is there now. We won't be going back. No longer is this our chinese good place. Too bad. SMH

I have had only one dish in this restaurant and its stuffed tofu, one of my favorite dishes. The pork hash is flavored just right, not to mention the thick gravy that goes well with steamed rice. The service is friendly and it really seems they have a lot to offer based on what I have seen in the menu. A definite must try when you are in the Waimalu area.

Pleasantly surprised! My parents were visiting for the holidays and when we picked up our manapua from Chun Wah Kam, my dad peeked through the window to Waimalu Chop Suey. Later that evening, he suggested we go there for dinner. When I had checked it out a few years ago, I was less than impressed by the condition of the restaurant, lack of customers and bad reviews. I was a little weary, but was excited to see more recent Yelp reviews indicated it was under new management, food is better and it had undergone a makeover. Going into this dinner I was optimistic. And I can proudly say that we were not disappointed. We were seated right away, Sunday night football game was playing on the two big screen TV's mounted on the wall (awesome!). Food selection was plentiful and instead of banquet style we opted for the Waimalu Dinner Special, 2 DInner Specials and dad got the Choy Suey House Special. Servers were friendly, took our drink orders and food orders quickly. Food was out in 10 minutes after ordering and everything was flavorful and filling. For $8.50-10 price range per rice plate, we will deifnitely be back and bringing/telling others. They even served us a cold dessert that was quite refreshing. Can't wait to come back and try the complimentary lobster with $50 purchase.

Our family comes here every so often. The food is average. It's the usual Chinese fare that you can find pretty much anywhere. The service & staff is friendly!

The first time I came to this place it was in 2008, and the food was medicre at the time, but the decor and cleansiness of the place scared me enough not to come back. Although, I got a tip from a friend that told me that the place was under new management and was remodeled (restaurant had a fire previously) and the food was pretty good now, so I decided to test this place once again and see if my friend's tip was accurate. Upon entering the restaurant, I was surprised to see how nice it looked. The walls were freshly painted an orange and white color. The walls really brightened the place up. We sat at the back table and were greeted immediately and given menus and asked if wanted something to drink. I really liked the immediate customer service. The menu was huge, it had so many selections to choose from, and I also noticed on the table that they had premade dinner selections if you wanted to do the dinner package. Although, I didn't get to try a lot on the menu because all I had desired that night was a bowl of hot and sour soup. I ordered the soup and they asked if we wanted to try the Gau Gee (their restaurant special) and I agreed. I was extremely surprised when the waitress brought out this huge fried dumpling. It was a good thing I only ordered one. This dumpling was delicious. The meat was very tender and full of flavor. I could of eaten a plate of the meat alone. I recieved my bowl of soup and it was steaming hot, just the way I like it. I normally like my hot and sour to be pretty spicy, so I was satisfied to discover that the soup was perfectly spicy to my liking. If you don't like spicy food, I would not recommend eating this soup as it is the kind of soup that makes your nose run. This was one of the best hot and sour soups I have had in a long time, and will definitely be ordering this in the future. They also have a dine in special that any order over $50, you get a free lobster. The lobsters in the restaurant are live and in a tank for everyone to see. The table next to us ordered the lobster and the waitress went to the tank, grabbed a lobster and put in on a serving plate to bring to the table to show the customers if the lobster was adequate for them. I found that a little humerous, but found that great as well, that way, when you get your cooked lobster, you know exactly what you are getting. :) I would say that my entire experience was very good and surpassed my expectations and the prices are not too bad as well. It seems pretty reasonable for the location and quality of the food. I will be coming back with more people next time, so we can sink our teeth into more variety of the food they offer. Happy eatings!

Waimalu Chop Suey is the home of burritos sized Gau Gee. Incidently, its also the home of the best Orange Chicken. Eating here will literally make your taste buds explode! My parents frequent this establishment so I was lucky enough to accompany them on one of their visits. We ordered Sweet Sour Spare Ribs, Pork with Choy Sum, Orange Chicken, Beef with Chinese Peas, Crispy Gau Gee Mein, and Lobster in Black Bean Sauce. Yumm-a-licious!! Loved everything :). Great food paired with friendly, helpful service made this a wonderful experience!

(2/10/2013) 500 trillion stars...EASY! We will definitely be regulars here! So much extra food - for 5 people the next day. And my wallet was none the thinner. This place is definitely in our heavy rotation list of restaurants to frequent. Great food, great service, great environment, great prices. What are you waiting for?

I am in love with the crispy gau gee here. My uncle brought me here, and now I'm totally hooked. I have had gau gee at other places and on other islands, but this place has the best. The gau gee is monster sized! I felt like a dwarf with the gau gee in my hand (ok, yes, I am on the small side anyway... but I promise you that they are enormous). Even my family on the big island drool at the thought of crispy gau gee from Waimalu Chop Suey. We also had the cold ginger chicken, which was also yummy. Again this is not the cleanest or fanciest restaurant, but regardless you have to come here for the gau gee.

Holy humongous Gau Gee. Here in Hawaii it's hard to find a bad Chinese restaurant that's been around for years. With that being said. Every Chinese restaurant will have a dish or two better than others. Here I'd say has one of the best gau gee mein for its price point. 5 Huge 1/3 pound gau gee, mein, vegetables and shrimp for $10 and change. This dish will feed 2 easy. Next time you are in the Waimalu area you need to try it at lest once. Better than chun wah kam by far...

Used to go all the time back in the 80's and early 90's. This was the worst chinese place I have eaten at in a long time. We had the crispy gau gee over cake noodles and the gau gee was hard and cold. The sweet sour pork was ALL muscle and fat, we told our waitress and she just said, "oh". We left over 3/4 of it in the serving plate. The deep fried tofu was okay but the sauce was no flavor. The beef broccoli was practically raw. Will never go back here again!

So I was at a small dinner party and everyone brought amazing food! The one food item that won my stomach's heart was the amazing crispy gau gee from Waimalu Chop Suey! I've never been to the actual restaurant so this review is specifically for the gau gee! The crispy gau gee was humongous! It was really crispy and stuffed with meat! It was literally the length of three round pieces of sushi aligned in a row yelp.com/user_local_phot… Waimalu is not near my neighborhood, but if I'm ever in the area I am so going to try Waimalu Chop Suey! And if the restaurant isn't good...then at least I can always do a take out crispy gau gee order!

This place has always been a family favorite for Chinese food. Famous for their monstrous gau gee! My mom loves their won ton gau gee mein, she always picked it up whenever anyone in our house was sick. Anytime we had a family members birthday or out-of-town relatives visiting we always came here. Great prices and delicious food keeps us coming back. We even had a few wedding receptions here way back when they first opened. They recently changed owners and had a mishap fire but it has brought about some good changes. They removed the center wooden barrier and now the restaurant looks more open. They added a few flat screens to keep the guys entertained while the women talk story. The service is quick as always and now they serve a complimentary almond jello-like dessert as their gift to their customers.

This place is so cheap (in a good way). When was the last time you had a dinner for 3 and the bill came out under $30 (with complementary tapioca dessert) and with so much leftovers you had a full plate to take home for lunch the next day? It will happen here. We always order some kind of noodles (gau gee mein is good), some kind of meat (sweet sour pork was good) and some kind of 3rd option (either seafood or vegetables). It's ALWAYS under $30 with plenty of leftovers. My parent like this place and have been coming for so many years. The restaurant has new owners but they kept some of the menu items the same. It's a lot cleaner now with flat-screen TVs on each wall. It's a quiet, cheap Chinese dinner if you're in the area.

Last on my feed me tour is the infamous stalwart. It's Chinese food, just on the island. Lemon chicken, breaded, sauced, sweet, tender. Gauchi, what this place is different for, is won tons, overly saturated, double double won tons, that go great with the hot mustard sauce, which isn't your McDonald's variety. The pork eggplant was pretty, good, and only if eggplants could stop being so sloppy, it would be better. It's all in the sauce, rich, partly spicy, goodness that could be easily had with a meat product. Not much else to say, it's Chinese food, just on the island.

Good food and reasonably priced. Best crispy gau gee on the island. Their special plate at nine bucks isn't half bad.

Soooo much food! A whole bunch of us came here for a family celebration and oh man, all the food! The best parts of the several dish meal including the honey shrimp, the sweet and sour pork chops and the gau gee were sooooooo delicious and bigger than I have ever seen any be before! Apparently they're known to have serve the biggest gau gee? The waiters were all nice, making sure we enjoyed everything, filling our waters and giving us a fried rice plate for all the young (and not so daring, curious) kids. They also advertise that they will give you a free lobster for any purchase over $50 dollars, if you want it, I recommend reminding them since they forgot ours! But they insisted we get it take out so we only had to wait like ten minutes extra. While my knowledge of Chinese food restaurants like this is very limited, I still found it enjoyable and quite nice :)

My husband & I eat here all the time and we love it... This is a great pit stop to fill up and ride out the west side traffic before we hit the road and spend more money on gas. Our favorite dishes are the beef broccoli cake noodle, ginger chicken and their dinner mixed plate when we are on a budget. The best for me is their Soft Wor Gau Gee Mein, this really helps when you are sick and I don't feel soo bad spending money on something like this when I really can't taste it anyways. But when my taste buds kicks in it's the best, their vegetables that they add in are always fresh. Sometimes I can't finish it off so I have to take it home. But that's alright with me as I can take it to work in the same container and heat it up for a free lunch.. Yumm-o!! Recently they just had a fire and I gotta say, for them it was a blessing. Out with the old design and in with the new.. Their updated design on the inside makes the place more inviting and larger. Out with all of the flower boxes that use to have dust on the plants. Now the whole place is all one open area, new colors are on the walls and theirs NO EVIDENCE NOR SMELL that a fire was ever occurred in their kitchen. Also, I've also noticed around the middle of this year. There must be new owners because after our meals we get a cool free desert. Such as fresh orange wedges or a cold tapioca soup, to me their both yummy. But as for my husband he's a carnivor so that means for me.. hehehe.. :) But I gotta end this story with the best food: CRISPY GAU GEE!! They are the biggest on the island and NO ONE can beat them. Trust me on this!! They put choke filling where it looks like it's going to bust at the seams and their wrapper is thick. Some places put it in skinny wrappers, really.. Two thumbs down for them!! Their service is great and they have waitresses that actually talk with you and remember what you ordered from the last time. Also the new owners come around and actually ask how your doing.. Now tell me where can you find that kind of service in a Chinese restaurant.. Never!!

#71/365 More like a 2.5 until/IF I give it another try. My parents went to a party here so I only got to try the leftovers that they brought home, which included duck, their version of I think was cake noodles, and mongolian beef. The duck tasted ordinary, the mongolian was pretty good and little more on the sweeter side. The cake noodles were okay but the noodles were kind of odd as they werent the usual cake noodles that you get at other chinese restaurants. The edges also werent as "crispy" like usual. The sauce was also different and really gelatinous. My mom did bring home 1 crispy gau gee that was HUGE and fully stuffed with meat! I didnt get to try it but Iit looked tasty. Overall it was just alright and i've definitely had better tasting chinese food else where.

Excellent food and very friendly customer service! We had the combo fried rice, Char sui pork, sweet and sour pork, and chicken rice soup. All were delicious. The fried rice was the family favorite! Just the right seasoning!

This is my fav for chinese food I've been going here for years and the food has always been delicious the gau gee is what there most popular for. There's new owner's now and I thought it wouldnt be the same and I would be disappointed but I'm so happy to say the food taste the same, delicious and the gau gee is still huge! I got to talk to the new owner who's name is Jackie, he's a really nice guy and appreciated the fact that I took the time to compliment him on the new changes and how delicious the food was. They opened up the window's and got rid of the seed rack that use to sit next to the cashier booth and they added glass to the table's, they also added flat screen tv's so it's not so quiet any more. It feels great eating your yummy chinese food and chatting while watching sports, I love the new changes! The food is still delicious and tasty! Everything I ordered was yummy!(see photo) Thank you, Jackie for keeping waimalu chop suey menu just as yummy as the original owner's.

Been eating at this restaurant from small kid time (40 years). Over the years the food was excellent but service wasn't the greatest. Today the restaurant has a new owner, Jackie. The food is still great, but the service is so much better. Don't let the mundane looks fool you. The food is excellent for a great price!

This is the mot authentic Chinese food I have ever tasted. If you are into authentic Chinese this is the place to go.. Since I'm so use to mainland Chinese food I didn't like it's as much my friends that love Chinese food love this place.. I recommend getting the wonton soup the wontons are huge.. That's all I ate there really I give it a 3 star since I wasn't a big fan.. But I'm sure for people that love authentic Chinese they give it a 5 star..

I was warned before hand but I never imagined they would be that BIG, I'm referring to the size of the gau gees here, they're FrickenBig, no joke, talk about on steroids. I had the crispy gau gee mien for about $9 and change, this thing was huge filling a large saimin bowl, the gau gee come on a separate plate. Well worth the price, I could only eat about two of those monsters but made a good size dent in the noodles. The flavor was good but I've had better but the portion size makes for any short comings. The service was good, the place is very spacious, and they even had a lady wrapping won tons on a table in the dinning area- how authentic.

A sign said 2010 star advertiser best Chinese restaurant. So we decided to try it out. Seemed spacious and waitress was very friendly and helped us pick a dish. Then we waited 40 min for our food despite the restaurant not being crowded. The food looked good but tasted terrible, with too fatty meats, stale tasting noodles, and bad chicken Kung pao that barely even tasted like kang pao. Waitress forgot one of the food items and had to be reminded to bring it 15 min later. Bathroom was a little scary. As well as the open hunks of raw meat just sitting on tables in the back. At least the fried rice was edible...

Someone came over to my house once and brought over the largest Crispy Gau Gee I've ever seen in my entire life! I had to find out where they were from for the next time I went over to someone else's house. 1 order is $9.25 and has 8 pieces. I ordered 3 and had them put it in a tray for my pot-luck contribution. All night long I heard, "Ho...where you got these? Sooo big!" Needless to say, the crispy gau gee was the star of the party.

I've been going to Waimalu Chop Suey since my family moved back to Pearl City back in 96. Love love love them! The food is always excellent and the crispy gau gee is ENOURMOUS not to mention absolutely delicious. Now that I live in the northeast, whenever we come to visit a take out night is always a must. My favorite go-to dish is the beef with ong-choy.

We decided to try this place out for my grandmas birthday. It turned out to be GREAT- we all loved it! The staff was helpful and friendly, great service! They gave us a free dessert dish which they made fresh azuki bean mochi. The owner even decided to walk us out.. I think this jus might b our new family restaurant!

This is a quiet restaurant located on Kamehameha Hwy in Waimalu. The parking lot is a little hectic at times and full of potholes and huge speed bumps, but it's never too hard to find a parking spot, besides during the lunch rush. The interior is what you would expect of a family style Chinese restaurant. It's spacious inside but a little drab. Service could also be improved, but it's average compared to other similar restaurants. I normally get the Waimalu Plate, which is half an order of ginger chicken and half roast duck served with rice and gaugee. The food is good. It's exactly what you expect from a family style Chinese restaurant. The thing that keeps people coming back, however, is the gaugee. Your first time ordering it will be an experience you won't forget. It's almost comical how large the gaugee is. As large as it is, the meat inside is cooked excellently, still juicy and the wrapper is fried until it is crispy and crunchy but not burned. The size of the gaugee served here simply dwarfs the gaugee served anywhere else. Despite all the shortcomings of this restaurant, the gaugee alone gives it three stars. It would get a slightly better score if the interior and service improved, but you can circumvent the downsides simply by calling in a phone order and taking out.

I get nostalgic for any place still calling themselves a "chop suey." Sadly, the food here was edible, but just barely. The crispy gau gee, although humongous, as noted by other diners, was hot & greasy on the outside, filled with pools of oil on the inside, and the meat was cold in the center. Can you say re-fried in oil when you order it? Yuck. We got the cashew, tofu and vegetables. The cabbage slices were specked with black dots from the aging cabbage that clearly should have been in the yard waste bin, and not on my plate. The tofu also tasted sour and off. I guess I should have clued into the fact that there was only 1 other table of diners and the entire restaurant was empty. There was a sticker on the door showing that they had "won" in 2010 for Best Chinese Food. Don't believe it.

If you want more bang for your buck this is the place to come and get your gau gee on..noodles,beef broccoli, sweet sour pork and fried rice(sounds like a combo plate)it's all good...a little run down and old but worth the price and enough food per order...service a little slow but good....another neighborhood gem....

Waimalu Chop Suey is one of the places that makes me know I am back home in Hawaii. In fact, it is the first place I go after I return home from any trip. For the past few years, I have been on the mainland for school, and most recently, traveling for work for a month at a time. After being away for so long, there is little I crave more than the food from here. I have been eating here ever since I was kid, and my mom was eating here when she was a kid. Needless to say that this place has sentimental value for me. I know there are going to be people who disagree with my five stars...but hey, it's my review. Now the restaurant itself is nothing spectacular. The decor is pretty typical of Chinese restaurants, if not a little bland. There are random chinese paintings on the wall, along with a white board with specials (that never change) on it. There's a Chinese diorama thing which I always thought was an empty aquarium or a terrarium with lizards. The service is a little inconsistent, though it is usually quick and efficient. More than anything, I love the food here. The usual order includes Soft Gau Gee Mein, Stuffed Duck, Egg Fu Yong, Pork Hash, Steamed Fish Filet, Minute Chicken Cake Noodle. My favorite foods in the entire world have to be Soft Gau Gee Mein and Stuffed Duck. The gau gee here are huge and delicious and the gravy goes perfectly with the noodles. The Stuffed Duck comes with a lot of delicious beans, bulgur, mushrooms and I like that there are no black mushrooms or lup cheong. The other things are good too, but not as mindblowingly good. And even though, I really dislike most seafood, I actually like their fish filet which is steamed with shoyu, ginger and green onion. It's not too fishy for me and is quite good. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

I stopped by for a take out dinner plate one evening. Since this restaurant was famous for the extra large fried gau gee, I ordered the dinner plate with comes with a crispy gau chee, fried rice, kau yuk, two fried shrimp, beef brocoli noodles and sweet sour spare ribs. I think it cost $8.75 plus tax. Anyway, it was a big disappointment as the food was not what I expected from this Chinese restaurant. The fried rice was awful.

I was out on the west siiiiiide and I needed dinner to go, so I found this restaurant. I'm Chinese and I still don't know what chop suey is on the menu. Anyway, I usually order beef chow funn or minute chicken cake noodle to "test" the food at a chinese restaurant I never been to before. This time I ordered the cake noodle. What I liked about it was that they put the cake noodle on top of the sauce, so it stayed crispy. They also used big chunks of boneless chicken and ong choy, which is different from the standard choi sum found at most restaurants. The downside was that the price was like the east siiiiide. I paid almost $10 for the plate.

Don't really care for the atmosphere of the restaurant itself, but I only stop by for 2 things, take-out. Their Crispy Gau Gee, which is probably the fattest gau gee I've ever seen, and their Honey Walnut Shrimp. The mayo sauce that they make is delish! Sometimes gotta stop by there on my monthly trips to Oahu to bring some back home! Can't say much about the rest of the food there since that's all I go for! ^_^

depends what u're looking for. it's like comfort asian/american food... but it still got some authenticism in the taste. as advise by my foodie frien, they say the gau zi's are huge & awesome. since hawaiian standards are huge anyways, i was like, woah better not get fried version, otherwise we can't eat anything else. i read to get teh minute chicken, so we did - yummy especially with the ong choi as veggies. the shrimp foo yung's taste had to be enhanced w/ chilli sauce. portions huge. prices CHEAP for the amount u get. comfort food near my hood, yay!

I would of gave them a higher rating if the service was better. The establishment is very laid back and you get a feel of the local style dining atmosphere. The food is always excellent and always the one reason to go back. From the numerous siamin choices to the old faithful hamburger steak, they will always be a staple in the local community.

It has been years since I've been here, and I've always liked it. I had heard it was under new management, so I was a bit skeptical. However, not many chop suey places open past 8 p.m. and I knew they would be open when we arrived at 9 p.m. The close, daily, at 9:30, but the welcome we received, even close to closing time, was a pleasant surprise. I ordered bittermelon, minute chicken, soft gau gee (EXTREMELY HUGE gau gees), fish filets, and pork eggplant. IT WAS AWESOME! My husband's not much of a chop suey house kinda guy, but he LOVED it, too. My mom kept saying during dinner what great taste all the food had. I expected, with such awesome taste, that my husband or I would start to swell up from MSG, but NOT A BIT! I highly recommend you trying out this place - the food and service are both EXCELLENT!!!!

My husband and I had horrible food here. Yes, we are from the mainland and we are white, but its easy to tell good chinese food from bad. The duck (our favorite entree) was tough, dry and lacking flavor. The crispy gau gee had a speck of pork about the size of my thumbnail and that was it. Even the fried shrimp was dry. The garlic chicken was nothing but fat and skin and tasted like it had been sitting for a couple days. We spent over $40 on the food and the only thing we could eat was a fried rice (it was okay, not that great) and the char siu pork. Very disappointing.

I've been coming here the last 40 years. 4 generations of my family have ate and ordered food from here. The gau gee have also been ordered frozen and sent to Tennessee. Now I hear this Friday is their last day as the brothers sold the business. It'll never be the same. So sad. Guess its true that all good things must come to an end. This was truly my best Chinese restaurant. Where will I go now?

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
