Very informal, old Florida style restaurant on the Myakka River. Eat on picnic tables outside or on benches and tables on a screened in porch. I believe that they have a water problem as all food was served with paper plates, plastic tableware. Water and all drinks were bottled and served in plastic cups. Beer and wine only for alcohol choices. Happy hour meant that beers were 20 oz. v12 oz. for the same price. Great place for a family. Lots of run around space for kids outside. Guitar player with microphone played outside so we could hear him inside. Food wa s mostly fried or smoked. Appetizers included fried okra and fried green tomatoes. A little too much breading for us, but good taste. Main meals are sandwiches or you can choose dishes with two meats and two sides for $14. Too much food for any of us to eat the whole plate. The meats were baby back ribs (very meaty), pulled pork, smoked turkey or chicken. Sides included collard greens, cheesy grits, coleslaw (all good). Waitresses were friendly and prompt. We went on a Monday night and there were only a 10 tables or so with people. No waiting. We ate on the screened in porch as we noticed some flies buzzing the tables outside. We will go again with our grand kids, or visitors who want a taste of Florida that isn't ocean based. But the fried food is a little over the top for our diets, so we probably wouldn't go again on our own..

If you want to experience old Florida you definitely need to go here. The atmosphere is something that needs to be sen to be believed. Gators swimming in the river & laying on the bank. Service is friendly and fast. Cannot think of one bad thing to say about this place. Will definitely return.

Want to go to the bayou? Then you have got to come here, on your way to the restaurant you will feel as if you are on the wrong road, being its all gravel. Its not a fancy restaurant, and that's why I like it. I feel at home here. They are known for there smoked meats and they are really good, also the gator bites were amazing. I am looking forward to returning.

This is one of my fave places in Venice. They are closed for a month for some construction work but we will come back. The shrimp po' boy is the best I have had since NOLA. Ruthie our fave server is great. Very relaxing to sit on the deck.

We are local to the Sarasota area but had never been to Snook Haven. Followed the gps which led us down a 1 mile dirt road. Pretty bumpy but beautiful. The restaurant itself is a hodgepodge of seating: outdoor picnic tables/order at counter; table service inside, outside and screened porch. All right on the Myakka River. We had ribs, pulled pork, turkey, fried pickles and a salad. Food was EXCELLENT. Counter and table service was OUTSTANDING. 4 types of homemade bbq sauce. All very good. About 10 beers on tap. All brewery beer; no bud light (on tap) which is pretty amazing in this neck of the woods. About another 25 beers in cans and bottles. Awesome selection. Kids played on the playground. Bathrooms were clean. We will definitely be back!

Wow....this is the best Ribs I've had in a while and the baked beans... so good...the service was excellent. Misty is fantastic. Very pleasant attitude. Great customer service. Didn't have any adult beverages but she ripped of a very informative list of local brews. Great atmosphere. Right by the river. I'd recommend to friends.

A friend told me about this place and since it's a dive we decided to try it out on a hot Sunday afternoon. It's not a place you can see from the road...in fact, you have to know about it before you can find it. You take the turnoff at the sign and then drive slowly down a dirt road with moss covered trees that provided a cool but slightly eerie canopy for over a mile. Once there the live band was belting out throaty blues numbers and people were chowing down on the dive food, drinking beer and doing relatively sedate dance moves. Ya, it's an older crowd but so is MOST of Florida. We didn't eat only drank really cold drafts and enjoyed the river views and people watching. This is a great place to go and hang out for an afternoon. Oh, they also have canoe and kayak rentals as well as alligators.

Unusual little place! Live music! Located in a swamp! Food was nothing to write home about but company and tunes go a long way. I think Jeff enjoyed his pulled pork and my Fried Green Tomatoes are worth mentioning, but that's about it. Glad I got it off my dining list of places to go. It's a hot sweaty day but I was in good company. Everyone else looked like they just got il off the beach as well. After reading reviews I see I should have ordered differently. Oh Well, glad we stopped by.

Truly great Old Florida bbq in a great setting along the river. Highly recommend the pulled pork! Homemade chips great too !

Had smoked brisket, and smoked turkey with sides of grits and greens. Everything was great and eating outside felt like you were on s bayou in Louisiana. I will always come back. Ask for Natalie, she nice and doesn't get upset by stupid questions.

If you want to experience true Florida (Fl Crackers included!), come to Snook Haven. It's right on the river and you can rent a canoe after lunch and go see some of native Florida and...alligators!!! We had the Jumbo Wings (seriously good and very big) and the Pulled Pork Tacos, both amazing. The tacos arrived slightly less warm, but I did wait and have some wings before I ate them. However, flavors were awesome! Great band and lots of dancers. Will be back when I'm back in town!!!

Nice place to swing by every once in awhile. The food is alright. Many different beers to chose from. No hard stuff here. The staff is kind and they work hard to keep it moving. The music changes and its nice seating around the entire place.

Stopped in after a trip to the Myakka River State Park. This place had such a cool vibe with the band playing outside and plenty of seating around, it seemed like the perfect place to grab a bucket of beer and chill. I wish we had the time that day. I ordered a Shrimp Po' Boy which was delicious. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and covered in a tasty remoulade. The other highlight of the meal was the order of Gator Bites. Most places have rubbery crap that tastes like nothing, but these were superb.

Wish I would of found this place years ago, it feels like it's in the back woods. Right on the river with Gators! Best 15 hour slow cooked barbecue ever! Home made sauces & don't forget to dip in the sweet potato fries in the Dill Ranch sauce. They sell the barbeque sauce but not the Dill. Bummer...

  • Cait A.

What an amazing hidden gem! As another reviewer said, it has a real "old Florida" feel. To get here, you drive down a narrow dirt road with trees on either side - it's really beautiful. The place is really big with outside seating on almost every side and a fairly large indoor seating area. They have live entertainment almost every day but sadly we missed it ! I wasn't too hungry so I only ordered sweet potato wedges and corn on the cob. In a previous review I said I had the best sweet potato fries ever in Savannah, but this place beat those by a long shot. Definitely order these if you come here!!! The corn was okay. My dad had the brisket sandwich and said it was a bit too spicy for his taste but still delicious. Overall - amazing! Great atmosphere, good food, and friendly service.

Great ribs, good brisket, amiable service & live Chicago blues all overlooking the Myakka River. A nice way to spend a casual Saturday night. (Take care on the unpaved road leading to the place.) We'll be back!

Love the old Florida type atmosphere. Great music and food. If you are looking for something to very casual and laid back you won't be disappointed.

We went for dinner. My folks enjoyed their fish. Salmon special was good but I thought the piece of fish was a bit small. Good sides, collards and green beans. Cigar City IPA; very good. Elvis impersonator was a big hit with the crowd. Lunch would be nice to enjoy the surroundings.

  • Kara K.

Was down visiting my parents and stopped in for a beer and apps one afternoon - what a great decision!! The place has been spruced up since I was last here and the menu has been upgraded and expanded. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the smoked fish dip. The service was also fantastic. Will definitely be back on my next visit.

  • M W.

This is a great spot near 75 and right on a quiet part of the Myakka River. On a weekend afternoon you can enjoy your lunch while a band plays and the crowd dances. After lunch you can rent a kayak or canoe and paddle up or down the river to complete a great afternoon. That said, the BBQ is just good. If it was great, this place would be a wonderful slice of "Old Florida" heaven. I'll be back, but not for the food.

I love the location of this canoe-dock dive, and the atmosphere is fun! A live band played while Harley-Davidson clad bikers enjoyed their ice cold bud light twist of bottles. We ate inside only because of the bees- they are just honey bees, but my kids rather not be bothered. Our waitress, Rachel, was super friendly and attentive! Everyone in our party was happy and glad we picked it. The food was good, but nothing so exciting to describe here. (That's the only reason why it's 4 instead of 5 stars) When I visit the area again this will be on my list to return - it was a fun lunch!

    (4)
  • John G.

Gator bites were pretty good, inside A/C was the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars. The A/C was non existent. The brisket and spicy slaw sandwich was awesome! More of a BBQ joint then a fish camp.

  • Jan D.

A lot of charm and atmosphere. Seating was picnic tables inside, and umbrella deck tables outside. Nice view of the small river. Extremely rustic-plastic forks and knives, paper towel on a roll for napkins etc. Service in cardboard container. But the food was very good, hence the four stars. we had chicken, pulled pork, and ribs, all were above average. Homemade potato chips were not wonderful. Coleslaw I was fabulous. Good place, just not comfortable to sit and chat.

This place is awesome, the beat kept secret in Venice Fl. The atmosphere is great along with the food and music. The location is amazing along the Myakka River. One of my favorite spots to ride my Harley on a beautiful day

  • Cecilia A.

I love the compination of very good smoked food (love the chicken wings (so fresh and juicy), the southern country feeling (live music every day) and beautiful natural scenery. And to top it of the server was very friendly and helpful.

  • Frank M.

The place has a great atmosphere being you can sit inside or in a screened in area or outside on the patio where you can see the river flow. The menu is simple and the food is good! I had the fried talipia, my girlfriend had the po'boy shrimp, and grandfather had the pulled pork tacos! It was all amazing, we also had the gator bites which were also good. The service was good, we didn't wait long for our food or appetizers. I would recommend. This place to anyone, it's a nice rustic place out on the myakka river about a mile into the woods.... Really cool place!!!

  • Kyle B.

It may be touristy, but I love this place! There's something about eating friend seafood on a bayou that brings a feeling of satisfaction. The food was nothing too special, but along with the atmosphere this is a great place to grab lunch. About the time we finished with our lunch, a live band started playing. I will definitely be back!

  • R W.

Unique eatery with live music almost always. I got their Brisket and Spicy Slaw sandwich - Wow! Delicious! My husband wished he would have gotten this. Great atmosphere. Pricey, though, for what we got, thus the 4 stars. Would probably go back.

Came here on a Sunday and we were thrilled to find out that there was a huge biker event going on. Absolutely no parking, but the guy with the flag went out of his way to get us in. They also had a shuttle that we were glad we did not have to use. Our "local" hosts were happy to show us around and we had a blast. Ice Cold Beer was $2.00 per 16 oz can and was plentiful. Unfortunately, we did not have to eat, but the barbecue looked great. Such friendly people everywhere and a live band to boot! Will be back for sure...

  • Judy H.

We live in Bokeelia, FL and we took a motorcycle ride to Venice whith some biker friends and had a wonderful lunch ... smoked chicken ... turkey club sandwich with bacon ... homemade chips ... juicy dill pickle ... waitress was friendly and accomodating ... what more could you ask for? We'll be back!

  • Bob H.

Campy, swampy, noisy and TASTY. 4.5 stars Had I known this was a sister spot to Sharky's I'd have probably skipped - and missed some great Brisket and pulled pork. 4 sauces served on the side - the spicy whiskey sauce has a nice smokey kick too. Moderately priced $10 for a sandwich platter, $13 for 2 meats and 2 sides. Good to be down south with plenty of refills on proper sweet tea. Pleasantly surprised and worth the trouble to track down this local recommended dive.

Fun joint! Great river side locale, live music and cold beers. Food is decent too! Tender brisket and really yummy shrimp po boy. We were sorry to leave to catch a flight! Looking forward to our next visit so we can enjoy the waterside and shake our booty a little.

  • Blake H.

The outdoor space right on the river is peaceful and true to old Florida style. Food isn't bad, lots of fried entrees. Only serve beer and wine. The outdoor picnic tables could use more shade to be enjoyable during the sunny Florida days. It's a good place to go when you're in the mood for casual and fun dining. Live music is always a good time.

Wonderful location on the Myakka River. I had the pulled pork and beef brisket and both were great. My wife had the ribs and loved them. The sides we had were also very enjoyable. Service was friendly and attentive. Huge improvement over our last visit a few years ago. We will probably return during this trip to Florida because it was so good. If you like barbecue you can't go wrong with Snook Haven.

Ever since it reopened I've wanted to give it a try because I LOVE the location, right on the river, and the old Florida feel. Today my wife and I finally got there. My only regret is I waited to long. It was outstanding. I had (GET THIS) Pulled Pork Tacos. It was al leap of faith because.....well..have you ever heard of Pulled Pork Tacos? I was actually expecting a generic BBQ. Boy was I wrong. It was as good a BBW as I've had. The taco combination was outstanding. There were four sauces to select from, all made there according to my server. Wife got sausage, pepper and onion on garlic toast!. It was every thing she wanted it to be, plus it came with their own chips. The server was outstanding. When she asked for garlic toast he said, "Just so you know, you don't get as much because the toast is smaller. You get more with the roll." That, my friends, is what a good server does. From the drive down a dirt road, through a tunnel of trees, that ends at the river...to the laid back building with both indoor, screened porch and outdoor seating (right on the water) it is a place not to be missed. Leaving we walked down by the dock and there was a gator looking back at us. This is a MUST DO if you have kids. So happy that the new operators are making a go of it.

You can't beat the ambience. On the water surrounded by trees, real casual dining, great service and we even saw an alligator in the water. So why 3 stars? I ordered the beef brisket and chicken combo with green beans and bbq baked beans as the sides. The beef was tough as toenails, the chicken had no flavor, the green beans were OK and the baked beans had lots of flavor but were dry. Disappointing food but the setting and great company made up for it. I doubt I would come back.

Ate lunch here on Thursday for the first time - and it definitely won't be our last! The place was hoppin' at noon. Chris & Bob were the entertainment (banjo and accordion). They were terrific!!! The food was very good. Gator Bites were amazing!! (Definitely agree with another reviewer). The Smoked (1/4) Chicken was also very tender and very tasty. Caesar Salad was just ok. We really enjoyed our lunch here and would definitely recommend.

Their was no full bar , beer wine and Budweiser strawberry margaritas .Started outside , too. Many bugs , went inside screened area , really hot .Got 2 item combo $13 .pork loin with Polska kielbasa stuffed down the middle , and and the brisket , 2 sides collard greens and macaroni .The brisket was the most tender Ive ever tasted and great smoky flavor .The pork and sausage was tender and delishous.Macaroni bland and collards bland also .Great choice of BBQ sauces on the table ( in the heat) .No music I got to listen to two waitresses talking about a third , had she been written up about not filling her sauces up the night before . I was up all night with the worst gas pains , and diarrhea continues .I don't usually comment negatively about anyone .2 hours after I left I stared getting sick and it still hasn't stopped .Throwing out leftovers , won't be going back

It has been many years since I've been to Snook Haven. I was on the Myakka River with a friend from Austria. And when I motored past, we decided to tie up at their dock and have a late lunch. Ewald is quite particular about healthy food. But Wendy the bar tender talked him into trying their gator bites with myakka chips. I was a little surprised. I had their big cheese burger which went down well with my two drafts. As others have pointed out, this is simple American food prepared well and fresh. It comes out the way they pride themselves. This was a very nice warm and sunny Florida winter day near 80. And we spent 4 hours on the river so far. So the good simple fare was perfect. The menu has a good selection of fish, pulled pork fried okra ... for example. Nothing is pre-cooked. They had the banjo band inside today. The dulcimer and banjo bands here are pretty well known in the area. There are bands almost everyday, one around noon and one in the evening. Almost all the outdoor tables were taken, and the inside as well. Several groups from their tour boat trips were there. Some were eating after a tour and other before. The boat skipper Captain Terry ordered something to take out at the bar where we sat. Guess another tour will start soon. You can usually see gators on these tours. You can also rent canoes and kayaks. We were in a small fishing boat which is only a foot above the water. So we got a real close look, see pictures yelp.com/biz_photos/lgYh… . Snook Haven is a delightful and fun experience. Their theme is the alligator yelp.com/biz_photos/lgYh… . A genuine and unique Florida experience which cannot be replicated!

While Snook Haven's food is nothing fancy, it is quite tasty! And the service, well Ruthie is our favorite, but all of the servers there are wonderful and you can't beat the old Florida atmosphere. My husband and I come to Snook Haven when we need some time to unwind (which is about once a week :) ). Their brisket and shrimp po' boy are our favorites, but they have new chefs who are working on new items which are quite tasty (we get to try out new things they are thinking of adding). Don't pay attention to older reviews. The place is under new ownership and everything has been put back to rights :)

After 20 years of knowing Snook Haven existed, we finally visited on a recent afternoon before the sweltering sun of summer arrives. There are some attractions for out of town visitors; canoe rentals, boat rides etc. This was an "old" Florida river stop that was used to import liquor during prohibition, and is located on the scenic Myakka River. Not very much has changed and that's its charm. We strictly came for lunch but were actually flabbergasted to find out that Wednesday afternoon is Dulcimer band day. I'm not sure if I was more surprised by what a Dulcimer looked and sounded like, or the fact that they could find four people in the same county that could play the Dulcimer. Nonetheless the seats around the Dulcimer concert were "reserved" and we were thankfully moved to a rear area were the lilting music was a distant sound. This place features reasonable prices and pretty good food. Everybody at our table was pleased; the burger was served exactly as ordered ($7.75) and included lettuce, tomato etc, a few had homemade chili topped ($4.75) with cheese and small side salads ($3.95), a Jumbo Hot Dog ($4.00), a fish and chips ($12.95) and the "smoked 18 hour" pulled pork ($7.95) sandwich. All sandwiches came with homemade Myakka Chips. You can add French fries (or sweet potato fries) and Cole slaw to any sandwich for an additional $2.25. The chips were good and ample and really didn't need any additions. The food was surprisingly good as was our waitress who checked back often for drink refills. We took a brief stroll and posed for a few goofy "stick your face through a board and have alligator body" pictures, and stood next to their sign that says "Snook Haven, with the Coolest People on Earth!" Wow, they really have a good self image. Now if I could just stop humming that Dulcimer version of "Proud Mary."

Going down the path to get there was a little strange. We expected to see some moonshiners walk out of the woods. Being right on the river in a secluded spot really made our lunch into an adventure. It was the best bbq I've ever had! Portions were huge and service was good. Everything was good but the brisket and beans were awesome!

  • Mandy D.

We've been here twice now, both times very good :). We've tried the smoked chicken wings, sweet potato wedges, pulled pork, house-made chips, cheese grits, and Mac n cheese. Everything we've tried has been very good (way better than sister-restaurant Sharkey's food IMO if you're reading, management). Their house-made barbeque sauces are so good they should bottle and sell them. Happy hour daily 4-close, pretty large draft beer list. Lastly, they have indoor and outdoor seating, with great views of the river. We will have to come back for the live music soon :)

My best friend and I kayak out of Snook Haven. Ive tried there Gator Bites, and they were really good. New owners have bought the place out, thank goodness. I was sad when I heard they were shutting down. The NEW Snook Haven will be BBQ, yum! and YES they will have Gator Bites, fresh from good ole' Florida :)

Go on Sunday afternoon before 1pm or you'll need to park at the entrance a mile away & wait for their shuttle that comes about every half hour. The place rocks with their fun music outside. Everyone sits on the picnic tables outside to either listen, dance, on the dirt patio, or have a brew & sandwich. I recommend the pulled pork sandwich served with their chips for $7.95. Burgers are good too. There is also nice inside casual seating where it's air conditioned. Great fish fries on Fridays. Lots of cycles come on Sun., but are never out of hand. Located on the Myakka River. Can take a chartered boat tour from there. Do not swim or feed the alligators. They are not logs just floating in the river....

We've been to Snook Haven to eat a few times. You drive down a sandy road to the restaurant that looks like it started small and has been added onto a number of times. They have palms growing up through the roof. There is plenty of indoor seating if the weather is favoring insects but we sat outside right over by the river on a perfectly warm afternoon. They provide table service and the food is higher quality bar food like wings, burgers, fish & chips and my favorite, fried gator tail. Very resonably priced. friendly service. When I say higher quality I mean very well prepared. My only real complaint is the beer selection but at a good local place like this that's to be expected. Just about every major domestic beer is offered and most people are buying by the pitcher. Too bad they don't have any good microbrews or real imports. It's just not that kind of place. Just the usual Heinys and becks which are just like the US majors. I had a couple of Yeanglings. You don't know what to expect here, there was a couple of guys playing guitar on the small stage outside under the oaks. I heard Sunday is bike day here also.

Found this place via Yelp while planning our day trip to Venice. Wanted to try old world Florida food and this does not disappoint. Our family had the catfish sandwich, SUPER moist, seasoned perfectly. Pulled pork, alligator bites and fried okra all excellent but the shrimp po-boy was hands down the highlight. Service was quick and we found the staff to be very friendly. The do add a 10% surcharge (not sure why) but they should post that (I didn't see a sign). I was happy to pay as I would have tipped well anyway based on the food and great service. Dont let that deter you this was a great family event for us and the banjo band didn't hurt either.

Awesome BBQ! stopped here on our way out of Boca Grande. Good find for a nice backwoods BBQ restaurant on the river. Fun outside atmosphere with live music on a Sunday. Give it a try if you're in the area.

This place had a great ambiance and a cute little spot on the river. We sat outside under a shady tree and enjoyed the live entertainment. Our drinks were served quickly... But the good stops there. We ordered our food and waited 35 minutes with empty glasses. Our waitress was nowhere to be found. The tables near us had not been served, either. After waving people down to help us (and others) we were all told someone would be out... but nobody ever showed. After 45 minutes we went inside to find our waitress and they told us they could not find our order! This place started off well and had great potential. After having to wait so long only to be told they lost our order? We got up and left.

Snook Haven really exists and it a place where the setting inevitably trumps the menu. Simple Florida tinged fare is secondary to this unique location. Located on the easternmost end of Venice Ave, this old time fish camp/restaurant/bar/canoe launch is now a county-owned facility, but it doesn't feel like a government operation in any way. Sitting outside and watching the black mirror Myakka slide by makes you forget you're in bustling Florida. Entertainment is usual in the evenings -- check their website because it varies from Elvis to banjos to whatever. Bikers have traditionally shown up on Sundays. Can be buggy outside. Ignore the Killer Turtle schmaltz and escape from the Interstate (take River Road exit south and turn left at the first light). You won't forget this joint and you'll find yourself telling others about it.
