We almost didn't go here because of the reviews on yelp but I am SO glad we did. We were in town and craving sushi and this definitely did the trick. Ambiance: Traditional tiny sushi restaurant. We sat next to the window in the booth which was great for my people watching obsession. The booth wasn't the most comfortable but I wasn't there to nap, I was there to eat! Drinks: We started with water which was promptly served and then chose a light white Torrontes that was perfect. Food: Started with Edemame that wasn't overcooked. We then ordered a bunch of different rolls that I'll summarize. South of the Border roll: very clean tasting, a nice light option. The mayo wasn't overwhelming at all. Crunchy: I could have done without this one. I wish they just pit tempura flakes on top rather than frying the whole thing. Spider: delicious!! The eel sauce they top it off with was awesome Ho's special roll with white tuna on top: SO good. My favorite Dynamite: HUGE pieces of fish and it was so fresh. The service was great, the food was delicious and the prices were cheap. Overall I would really recommend this place!

Finding good sushi in Sarasota is not easy. This place has the best sweet potato tempura roll I've ever had. The prices a good. And everything we've had has been great. I'm not a fish fan, so I've yet to try anything fancy. My dad got their caterpillar roll and really likes it, my husband, who is not a fan of fish, tried it and wanted to order it again. Staff is friendly and prices are good.

The sushi is ok at best. I come from Louisville where sushi is around every corner so maybe I'm a little bit spoiled however this I can say Bushido is less than perfect. The rice is alright but almost soggy. The rolls are not exciting and the fish doesn't seem fresh. I gave them three stars because the service was very prompt especially for only having one waiter. At the end of the meal we were given fried bananas? Covered in chocolate syrup. I used a question mark because that was my best guess! There was no explanation the nice waitress just sat them down for us. I'll eat anything that's free! I enjoyed the Volcano Roll for what it was. I'm not used to spicy crab being shredded crab stick with spicy sauce on it but it was very artsy looking. The flavor was there it was just missing a little something. The avocado roll was not exciting and looked sad. I took home three rolls to share with my boyfriend for a midnight snack. We decided on the SpongeBob, the classic Philadelphia, and the Maui rolls. We went for the SpongeBob because who doesn't love that little fella and there was jellyfish in it! Unfortunately Jellyfish just wasn't for us but I could see others who know the flavor enjoying it. The classic Philly was a bit of a let down. I generally enjoy mine with raw salmon however there's was smoked and the cream cheese was virtually nonexistent. Lastly the Maui roll. This was coconut shrimp and spicy mayo with other tidbits thrown in. The roll was delicious and felt right for the area. My only problem with this roll and many others was presentation. I love my sushi to be beautiful and this was not. In short, if you are desperate for sushi and don't want to drive to Sarasota go for it. It won't be the best sushi you've had but it'll give you your fix.

Love this place! It is one of my favorite lunch/dinner spots for sushi in town! Friendly staff, great sushi, and the prices at what you would expect to pay. A little pricey, but again, it's what you expect to pay for the good stuff!

Place was pretty good. Good location with other shops connected to a good ice cream place. Plenty of public parking close by. I would suggest the dragon roll! I only wish they had hibachi on the menu, it was mainly sushi with a few entrees. Desserts looked tasty although I did not try any. We had a table of 10 and they got us in right away on a Saturday night without reservations.

I used to love this place. The server is wonderful and I rarely have to wait when I go in. I tend to go a couple times a month and the food was always well done. Recently though the quality has gone down. The food comes out a bit warm which worries me in a sushi restaurant and it doesn't always seem fresh. Don't get me wrong. I will keep going because all my experiences prior to a couple months ago were perfect and I hoping the latest downward slide is a temporary set back but I will really only give it a couple more times before I make the drive somewhere else when I need my Sushi fix. It used to be 5 stars and it genuinely disappoints me to have to give it 3.

As good as sushi gets in Florida! I can only recommended sitting at the actual sushi bar solely due to our exceptional dining experience. It's a small place, quaint and laid back. Perfect. They have a decent selection of import Japanese beers. We ordered Sapporo and Kirin Ichiban. While waiting for our appetizer the sushi chef slipped us both a plate of marinated eel and octopus he was whipping up for us to sample. We had the Sashimi Combo for our app, fresh and affordable. The Bushido roll and another that I can't recall the name of (it had a slice of jalapeño on top) were excellent, definitely left us wanting another. After those were taken away our waitress brought us another free offering of dessert from the back, deep fried banana wontons with chocolate drizzle...again, free. Seriously. Sit. At. The. Sushi. Bar! Just pass up the 67 million Italian / Pizza / Gelato places on the strip and go for one of the few gems on Venice Island. You're Welcome AARP members. You're welcome.

My original review still applies, but if you haven't yet tried the Cowabunga Roll, you need to. It is super tasty with just a slight kick at the end. I am no longer a fan of the sake, though. They are all just too subtle for my liking. Your preferences may be different, however. If you like flavored sake, go for the Fuji Apple.

Nigiri tasted fishy, not a good sign at a sushi place. I wasn't a fan of the rice preparation/taste used either which can make or break a roll... I went for lunch and ordered the geisha bento box. It was enough food for sure but I didn't feel comfortable finishing the sushi and the gyosha was nothing to rave about. All in all it was a random lunch in a random town I'm in for business. If I ever come back this way I have to say I'll be avoiding Bushido.

I was told to try the cute little sushi place, Bushido Sushi on Venice Ave by a coworker, I don't think he eats sushi but it's always worth a try. I thought it would be perfect to bring someone from out of town. Sorry to say, this could have been one of our worst sushi dining experiences. We took our guest for lunch; for the three of us; the bill came to $75.00 which is not bad at all for 3 people for sushi. The quality of fish was pretty lame, and each and EVERY roll fell to the plate when we used our chopsticks! I know proper etiquette says you can use your fingers for sushi, although my mother would kill me especially with a guest at the table! I also I know I am not the best sushi roller in the world, but at least my rolls stay together, and I learned to make sushi rice from cookbooks and roll from the Internet at home!! We started as our guest ordered Edamame, Miso soup & Chicken Fried Rice, to share. I think they cooked the soy beans for 7 days, they were so tough and dried out the salt wouldn't even stick to them; the Chicken Fried Rice was pretty tasty. Then we proceeded with a few orders of Toro and Uni, not the freshest fish but okay, then we ordered the Godzilla, Volcano, Green Caterpillar, Nassau, and Rainbow Rolls, instead of bringing them as they were rolled; they were brought all at once. I think it took at least 40-45 minutes, YIKES! That was the longest wait of my life for sushi and there was only one other table ordering. The server was very pleasant and scurried around to keep our table clean; I surely hope they can keep up during a busy weekend evening in season!!

  • Christian S.

Going to disagree w the first reviewer - prices were actually cheap - where can you get Toro in the US for 5.95! I didn't try any of their sushi however as I wasn't feeling adventurous. Pork tankatsu was super breaded and was accompanied by this really nasty cabbage - Chick Teryakki was dry - although big bonus for using chicken breast! Hard to compare as I'm pretty spoiled with the quality Japanese food in SF.

This is one place I will never go back to my experience was bad before but not like this...but for this time it was bad service food is mediocre at best and food took forever some of the people that were with me finish eating before some got the food and to top it off a fly in my rice #never_again

  • Carrie M.

I would give it zero stars but unfortunately I can't. They have a whiteboard menu so you check off what you want. The waitress didn't interact with us AT ALL! Not even a "hello". The food was just bad. Avoid at all costs. Terrible service, terrible food.

Always satisfied with Bushido, amazing prices for such delicious, well made dishes. Highly recommended restaurant, especially with the high prices on Venice avenue now.

This place was great. We ordered the Godzilla roll with Udon and deep fried vegetables. We ate up the Godzilla roll so fast and my boyfriend wished that we got another. The udon was in a broth and the noodles were so thick. The vegetables at times were hard to swallow but none the less still tasty. We split a meal together and it came out to 20 dollars rather than 40. I was full even after sharing. We sat there for about three hours and the service was great and everyone was so nice.

We had the spicy yellow tail, spicy tuna, spicy salmon , and the south of the border roll and they were all very good and fresh. Especially the south of the border roll. We also ordered edema me and the spring rolls and every thing was great. The wasabi is out of this world. It clears your sinuses and also asked for extra ginger and they loaded us up. Very good experience. We will be back.

Best sushi bar in Sarasota county. I always stop by and grab a bite to eat when I return home. Chef Ho is well renowned in the area and has been doing it for 20+ years. Has a strong following and great sushi. The Louisiana roll is by far my favorite roll, always a must. The fish is always fresh and his rolls are very creative. Service is very friendly and take good care of you. As for kitchen entrees their tempura and chicken fried rice are amazing.

FAKE! I experienced a specific stomach upset that I've experienced before from eating "escolar" or "phony tuna". Your stomach will uncomfortably churn and growl for hours...or worse. The tuna rolls looked darker and brown-er right off the bat too. I didn't have a lab test it or anything but I am just relaying my experience. Also beware of things marked "KRAB" on their menu. This is not a misspelling but fake crab meat.

Great variety and inexpensive prices. This is a great place for people that are a little scared or new to sushi, as they have a a wide selection of rolls, so you don't have to worry about designing your own. Plus, they have a ton of cooked selections, so they can have all the fun without the worry of eating raw food. Don't worry, it's just as great for experienced sushi fans too.

Well, I think that Bushido is an awesome place for lunch or otherwise. I have had a variety of their rolls and all of them were pleasing to me. Their service was fast and friendly. I will admit that at times it was a bit loud in the dining room; but I suppose for Venice Ave; that's what you get during "season". The appetizers, the soups and the rolls were all so good. I actually had to take part of the dinner home with me. I certainly did not have room for the complimentary dessert that the was brought out for me. I have visited a few of the other area restaurants and although they are "okay" or just average when it comes to sushi, I will pick Bushido's everytime over all the others. I believe the fish is the freshest that you will find used in this area. And as far as prices go, I also believe it is more than a fair price for the amount of food you receive as well. If you haven't given Bushido's a try, I hope you will do so. From a lover of all that is Japanese; but more so Sushi....

I've eaten here a couple times and let me premise by saying I'm vegetarian so I can't give a full opinion. They have three vegetarian rolls. I had the fresh vegetarian roll and the pickled vegetarian roll. The pickled was the better of the two but both were a bit bland. That's not surprising considering the ingredients though so I can't really blame them. Their wasabi is monster hot. I used a medium sized dab on one of my rolls and the pain was so intense that I experienced something close to an endorphin rush. The service was good although my food came out a few minutes after the orders of my meat eating family.

This is a pretty good sushi place, nothing special about the atmosphere, just good sushi and good service. The Ngiri was fresh and the rolls were good, yet inventive. Volcano, Spicy Yellowfin and the Dragon rolls were excellent. the Spicy Yellowfin had a spicy sauce that contained flavors absent in the typical spicy tuna roll...very good. The rainbow roll was average. The chef mixed up a specialty roll on the house that had some interesting flavors, they also brought us a desert on the house that was pretty good. I'm from out of town, but from what I've seen of the Sarasota food scene, I'd guess you be hard pressed to find a better sushi place..

So good! Try the SSS and the Maui roll! Great staff and atmosphere!

If you're looking for sushi in Venice, Florida, this is the best place to go. Not by a huge margin, but by enough to call it the best. The rolls are all fresh, and the head sushi chef comes up with some very tasty stuff. The prices are fair, not bargain basement style, but when you're buying raw fish, are you really trying to get the best deal possible? That would be like shopping for underwear at Goodwill, I think. The rest of the menu is nothing special. I am the world's biggest miso soup fan (yes, seriously, I am) and theirs is "not bad." I've had the tempura, which is your standard fried whatnots with dipping sauce, and their pork katsu, which was disappointing. It comes on a bed of cabbage, drenched with Japanese BBQ sauce, which would be better served on the side. Other than that, the decor is pleasant, and they have their own very small parking lot, which is a huge benefit in "downtown" Venice. All in all, if you're in the mood for sushi, this is the place. If you want a variety of Japanese cuisine, this might not be the best bet.

We love vacationing in Venice, and ate here the first time we came. It was OK but not great. This was 3 years ago. We just tried Bushido Shushi again, and it was OK again. The sushi really doesn't have much taste, rice was rice, and edamame was OK (how can you mess that up), spring rolls were terrible like they had dog food in them. I think this is the only sushi restaurant in town, so what choice do you have, but it is not very good. It is usually not very busy, probably due to the fair food.

Really bad experience. Never had such bad sushi in my life. Very over priced. Ordered SSS roll came as rice roll with crab salad on top. Wont come back there for sure.

Great variety of delicious rolls! Very fresh and well prepared. I have lunch/dinner here several times when vacationing in Venice. The very kind woman that runs the place (forgive me for not knowing her name) is always so kind! She has often given my date and I a small gift with the ticket. Best sushi in Venice area!

Greatest sushi in this county! My husband and I are picky eaters and are obsessed with the sushi here. We have converted many people who "hate sushi" into sushi lovers bc of bushido! Favorite roll is the Josh roll but everything else that sounds good-is good!

OK, I realize Americans, much less redneck Floridians, know the difference between Japanese and Chinese people, but damn we need some Japanese people here in south Florida! I'm sick and tired of Chinese people cutting raw fish and calling it sushi ! Nihon-jin hitsuyo konnohen de!

The wait was sooooooo long.... The ac was not working it was so hot! The service of the waitress was not pleasant. The food was fresh but nothing special. We will not be returning to this sushi place.

Good sushi. I've had better and I've also had worse. Very solid all around. Service was excellent. I would return.

Bushido has always been the best in the area. Really good rolls such as the South of the Border Roll. Sashimi is always fresh and tasty except for one bad experience with uni that seemed a little bit old. Their ceviche is glorious. I have to admit that the quality has gone downhill a bit recently. We are hoping it is temporary and things will pick up here.

    (4)
  • Frida A C.

Nice location and decent price. 1)The service is a little slow perhaps it's because the full house. 2)Vegetable Tempura was too greasey. 3) the smoked salmon of Philadelphia rolled was quite salty which it lost the balance with cream cheese and rice.

  • Lindsay M.

Bushido by far, has the best, freshest, and most flavorful sushi in the Venice area! I live in New York, and I am used to knowing a great sushi restaurant in any town I am in. So, when I visit my parents in Florida, we found Bushido! Bushido is fairly small, so try and make a reservation (if you can). The service can be a tad bit on the slower side...but remember it is Florida. What is great about the staff, unlike in NY, the servers do not hover over you as you are eating. The food is great! We always get the freshest fish. They have lots of original rolls on the menu, so tasty! The next time I go I will update my review with some recommendations. My husband and I had the owner make us a huge boat of sushi for our wedding rehearsal dinner last November. I gave him a list of what I wanted included, and a price I wanted to cap out at...he went above and beyond! If you are a sushi lover and live or just visiting the area..Bushido on Venice Ave is a must dinner or lunch!

Love this place!! Fresh fish, great sake and quiet atmosphere. The fire dragon and rainbow rolls are my fav! The crab Rangoon is great too not to much cream cheese. Always friendly and delicious.

  • Matthew V.

So shocked and in a good way. Moved from NYC 9 months ago and this was my first taste of Florida sushi. Rolls were creative, not oversized and definitely not over priced. Staff was friendly and for going there in the off season the place was packed; must be really packed when it's in season. Get the "South of the Border" roll, and the "Louisiana" roll. I'm headed back there very soon.

  • Earl G.

If you have been to Japan and had sushi, or consider yourself a sophisticated Japanese foodie, you will probably be let down. If your idea of good sushi is like the ones you buy in your big box grocery store then you might like it. We did get the tempura, and that was ok. However, probably wouldn't go back.

  • Alek C.

They need a new sushi chief. Its a simple as that. Great location and decor. The service is great! The food not so much. All of the rolls is order are sloppy small and to put simply a mesh. I love this restaurant. This is where my girlfriend and I had our first date, so it means a lot to me. I just wish the had a new chief.

Okay for bait.. As a sushi aficionado, i know what is good and what isn't.. The fish here is not fresh..

I've been enjoying sushi around the US for 30+ years now. Bushido is a nice addition to the sushi restaurants in Venice. I've been there several times since they opened, whenever I'm in town there. Their menu offers you traditional sushi as well as some more innovative selections. Stephan's Spicy Roll is delicious as is the South of the Border Roll. What I fell in love with is their Tuna Ceviche...it has a very refreshing taste. Only criticism I have is the environment. The layout doesn't afford any sense of privacy and the chairs are uncomfortable. For now carryout or delivery are my preferred options.

  • An B.

This place is FANTASTIC! The sushi is fresh. The selection of good quality Sakes is wonderful. Food is good. Service is good. This is our regular "go to" place as often as possible, at least once every week or two. We used to travel to Pacific Rim all the way in Sarasota, but when you have Bushido at least 25 minutes closer, why drive all the way to Sarasota. I have no clue where the one "negative" reviewer went. This is not the place we go to. ....unless he doesn't know good sushi and/or isn't willing to pay the price for good fresh sushi. In addition, as far as him not liking the rolls on the menu, feeling they weren't imaginative-you can create your own rolls. They will do whatever you want! Use your own imagination! I highly recommend a visit to Bushido.

  • Mattias L.

Quick friendly service. Good sushi, but my staple - the rainbow roll - was a disappointment. Ordered several kinds of sushi, yellowtail, salmon and white tuna, as well as several different kinds of rolls. I recommend the dragon and the volcano roll. The waitress brought us a special roll as well as dessert that were on the house. Sushi places seem to be far and few between in Venice, but this is a good one.

    (4)
  • Jeremy D.

Average sushi place. The food is good, but nothing was particularily memorable. The prices were reasonable. The staff was friendly but not very attentive. Probably a pretty good sushi place for Venice but there's much better sushi to be had.
