I visit this place at least once a month. They have a couple of servers that have been there for a long time. Everyone seems to recognize us when we go in and the service is good. The food is quick to come out of the kitchen and the chips and salsa come right away. The salsa has good flavor and perfect kick, chips are nice and fresh. I get the enchiladas or taco salad and they are always good. Fajitas are also good. Overall, this place could use some tlc in the form of a good makeover, cleaning, etc. New booths and decor. The food is above average for mexican in this area and I would rate the service pretty good.

A very nice mexican restaurant. My favorites here are the chicken burritos, chile rellenos, and carnitas.

This place was just awful. The food i'm sorry to say was not edible. I was there with a friend from Mexico and he was very disappointed in the food to the fact he didn't eat it nor did I. The food definitely was an awful experience. I would say don't even bother.

Not perfect, but pretty darn good Mexican food. Very friendly waitstaff. I love the Carne Asada! SOOOO good. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside but give it a try! I haven't been disappointed yet.

Thought we'd give it one more opportunity, but they failed. Ever since the break away from Los Mariachis its been all downhill. Today the restaurant was really hot, tables were sticky, food was sloppy, service was stale, and they haven't changed the policy of notifying customers that drink refills are not free.

Definitely the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been. It was dirty service was the worst. I'm still feeling sick from the food. You will see from the pictures . The burrito came out in the dish sitting in oil. The taco was so mushy it fell apart when I picked it up. They couldn't even get the chips right.

  • Shannon M.

Check the pics! ABC news reported dirty food left out, roaches in kitchen & many reports of food at temps that could make us sick. So sad. Glad to know though.

When they were Los Mariachis, I loved their food, but they changed ownership or staff or something. Not the same. The last time I came will be my last. Service was terrible and the kitchen was FILTHY. There was a waterbug in my salad, then I glimpsed the kitchen through the door and left without finishing my meal. They need to pour boiling water over the entire kitchen and SCRUB. Ugh.

Great Mexican food!! It's good, but I think their restaurant on Ulmerton is a bit better. Like most good Mexican restaurants (not sure why this is the so common) the service is so/so usually. Great salsa. I hate that most Mexican restaurants make weak salsa to cater to people who can't take heat......Los Mariachis salsa has a little kick to it (more than other places anyway).

I've been going to this place since I was a child. Although the food tastes good, every time I leave there I have unimaginable stomach pain. I am a vegetarian, so I get a bean burrito with a cheese enchilada. Like I said, the food tastes good, but I do not believe the place is clean. The name was changed a few years ago and I believe it was to get rid of a reputation they had been creating... for being dirty. For years, as I can remember, it was fine.. Then a stench like no other started up in the bathroom.. After a few months to a year the smell had practically enveloped the entire restaurant. That's when the name changed. After that, the restaurant seemed fine, but now the stench is coming back to the bathroom, and I'm assuming the same thing is going to happen. This would be fine if it was the employee's living quarters, but it's not. It's a restaurant and it shouldn't smell. Most of the employees are quite nice, although some of the younger ones seem almost.. slow. Or just uncaring. Although throughout the years it's never killed me, I'm sure it's built my immunity a TON. And quite frankly I'm fearful of what goes on in that kitchen.

The name of the place is actually Los Mayas...if you really want Mexican food go instead to La Palma. I had at Los Mayas, a shell taco (it should be a soft taco) and a chalupa which was pretty much a tortilla covered by beans, guacamole and lettuce. The only thing that I liked was the bottled beer. Definitely not an option to come back, unless you don't care at all about the food.

Quick service, great margaritas, food is consistent as we go there once every couple of months for late lunch. Did I mention their salsa is great and you get hot and crispy chips :-)

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. It's not fancy but the food is just good. Always makes me happy to eat here!

I remember when this used to be a hot dog place in the 1980s... Anyway, now its a popular Mexican restaurant. There can sometimes be a language barrier with the staff--it's truly authentic. Great margaritas, and I love the white queso dip and chips. Everything here is pretty darn good. Tip -- this is a great place to eat before the downtown Clearwater holiday parade--but come a little early to get your parking spot!

Chicken tacos were the worst I've ever had. Waitress told us no cilantro. Couldn't finish the tacos and my whole table was ready To leave after only a few bites. I'm from Chicago so I know good Mexican and this was garbage! Sorry but Los Mayas need to step their menu up!

  • Derek S.

The food was decent, but I was not expecting the fried pork that my girlfriend ordered. It was large chunks of fried pork (we were expecting shredded pork) but we should have asked before ordering. I had the chicken quesadilla, it was a large portion with lots of chicken. The drinks were not the best. Import beers were upwards of $5 and the margarita was more. The margarita tasted more like margarita mix than anything else.

They would not take my to go order. I called at 9pm and this restaurant closes at 10pm and she told me she would not take my to go order. I called trying to order 3 tacos and cheese dip. I think this is ridiculous they could not take a to go order. 3 tacos is too much for this place. So I go in and order because she says it will only take 10 minutes. 30 minutes later no food. What a waste of time.

One of the better sit down, full Mexican restaurants in Clearwater. I agree that local taquerias are better if you are looking for more authentic tacos, but if you want to stuff your face with chips and salsa then this is the place to come. Their chips have definitely changed over the years and are not as good as I once remember, but they are still usually fresh. There are a million different things on the menu a favorite of ours being the chimichanga. After years of coming here I have never had great service, but this last visit was awesome. Seriously it could be that there were a total of 5 table in the restaurant, but our server was friendly, always there with a refill and checked on us a few times to see how the food was.

Not bad. Your basic Mexican place. Tons of choices, lots of food.

I had been there several times in the last few years and it had always been serviceable, but tonight it was the worst meal I have ever been served. My plate smelled like wet dirty socks. I swear to God. I had two bites and left. The lady at the register asked how everything was and I told her it was not good. She said she was sorry, but had no problem taking my money. There are many Mexican restaurants in Clearwater. Skip this one.

Seriously - who the heck said this place has a view? A view of the corner of Cleveland and Missouri is not a view worth looking at.

Pros: - They have the best chips and salsa in the Clearwater/Tamapa/St.Pete area. The chips are fresh, and the salsa has good flavor with just the right amount of heat. - Their menu has a great variety of options, including vegetarian items. - The portions are large. We almost always have enough left over for the next days lunch. - Relatively cheap. Cons: - The ground beef can be greasy sometimes. - I'm not a fan of their steak entrees. - The decor isn't much to look at. - The service is average at best.

Stopped by Los Mayas for an early supper. The building is quite large with about 120 seats, which were virtually empty when I arrived, but filled up a good bit during my time there. There are lots of windows with street views that let in great natural light. It's always good to see any restaurant doing some business in downtown Clearwater, as many streets have become somewhat of a wasteland of empty commercial spaces over the years. Soon a huge basket of fresh, hot and crisp tortilla chips with a medium heat red salsa landed on my table, all very good and a nice start to any meal. Order taking was prompt, but as the restaurant filled up my waitress was largely absent from checking in (or even being anywhere I could get her attention) for anything I needed. Los Mayas scored more points right off the bat for serving up my favorite Mexican beer, Bohemia, in an iced mug, a great way to cool down any heat from the food. The menu was fairly extensive, with ~25 combo lunches/dinners, 11 different fajitas, 5 vegetarian dinners and 30+ house special entrees in beef, pork, chicken and seafood/fish. I decided to order a basic meal of tacos, enchiladas and beans, and unfortunately a variety of menu options didn't extend to this platter. Unfortunately, tacos are only served on hard shells with lettuce and white cheese (no option for traditional tacos with soft corn tortillas with cilantro and onions). Even worse is tacos are only available in ground beef (ughhh) and shredded chicken, a bit disappointing when any average taqueria in a Mexican grocery/convenience store in Clearwater will offer ~8-10 choices of meat for tacos. I got both a chicken and beef taco and neither were seasoned particularly well or had much flavor. My 2 enchiladas also had the shredded chicken, and both were smothered in red sauce, with ok flavor, but nothing extraordinary. The sauce definitely tasted canned, and not fresh or site-made. On bright spot was the beans which came with a nice white cheese topping. The beans were quite good compared to many beans I've had at other local Mexican places. As the serving portions for the entire meal were large, the value was good overall. If folks are looking for a basic, Americanized Tex-Mex meal in downtown Clearwater, Los Mayas is passable, but there are far better choices not too far away. Personally, I'd make the short drive over to Drew St. where a number of good Mexican restaurants/taquerias are serving up authentic Mexican flavors and fare. See my list here: gulfbreeze.yelp.com/list… My score on a Pinellas Mexican restaurant scale: Atmosphere: 4 Service: 3 Food: 3 Value: 4

This is been my favorite restaurant for over 20 years. The food is delicious and you can't beat the price. Make sure to have the cheese dip!

The reviews on certain websites were outstanding so I decided to give it a try. While Los Mayos is ok, it leaves a lot to be desired. The high point is the fresh and warm complimentary tortilla chips. It's then ruined by the heavily puréed salsa served in the now ubiquitous clear plastic pourable container. (the same one as most typical Mexican places). While the flavor is decent, it's no thicker than a standard tomato soup. The menu is fairly basic and features the same combinations served at thousands of Mexican restaurants across the US. Service was quick although cleanliness was questionable. Compared to other Mexican places in the immediate area it is pretty good, but that's not saying much.

I don't normally go for Mexican or spanish food but this place was not bad at all. I ended here with a friend one night and we had a feast! There was a lot of food and it was all good. The servers are a tad bit slow. They start you out with chips and salsa which is the best part! The menu is huge and took me awhile to decide what to settle with.

This is a really nice place. We are almost always waited on by Tino, who is awesome. We like the white cheese for the chips...awesome. Also, we order the 2 Chimichanga plate with chicken and split it....still a lot to eat! I'm from Texas, and I know great Tex-Mex, now, this isn't perfect, but it is really good. The Margaritas are quite good, and we order them without the ice... So, enjoy... We do!

I love Mexican food. I grew up in Texas eating a lot of Mexican food and Tex-Mex. I have also lived in New Mexico (guess what, lots of Mexican food!) and also Colorado (more Mexican Food!) I have spent a lot of time in Mexico (Playa Del Carmen area, where the Mayas originated!), also Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo. I usually hang out with the locals, and eat the local food... and work on my Spanish (it needs a lot of work!). I also cook a lot of Mexican food, a lot of different types from all over Mexico ( I even make Mayan Cochinita Pibil at home, banana leaves and all). So I feel like I know Mexican food, at least a little bit. We stopped at Los Mayas after scuba diving with a boat in a nearby marina all morning. We were hungry, and some good Mexican food sounded perfect. Service was pretty good, although the waitress seemed surprised when I spoke to her in Spanish, as did the guy cleaning tables. But she was cool, and friendly. We ordered... my girlfriend went for the #9 Pollo Fundido lunch... and I ordered a #16 Chile Relleno and Taco lunch. GF said the chicken was good (very small portion), but the refried beans were thin and tasted weird. My Chile Relleno was like a hamburger patty dipped in egg batter and fried, and place on a slice of roasted Poblano pepper. Tasted sort of heavy oregano / cumin, but not very flavorful, and not like any Chile Relleno I have ever had... and I LOVE Chile Rellenos of all kinds. The taco? Basic ground beef, light spicing, Sort of bland, and salty...with a little bit of Queso Blanco on it. Refried beans were very thin, tasted strongly of something I could not identify (Epazote, maybe? if it was Epazote, it was not fresh.) and were not very good. Tortillas.. ok, but not great. All in all, not a good meal. I was really hoping for something good. We are unlikely to go back. Maybe the full dinners are better... Oh... and this is definitely not TEX-MEX either... and yes, I too would prefer Taco Bell, which I detest!

The restaurant. Was very clean and the server was helpful. Ordered the shrimp cocktail for lunch. It was very tasty and a little spicy. There were about 12 trip in the cocktail I would recommend the cocktail for anyone wants just to appetizer.

I have been coming there for years, the food is great and prices are right. Even Mexican buddy says the food is good. Help this restaurant raise its rating, visit and try its food.

Start with a table so sticky that every dish and glass adhere to the table. Then move onto the horrible black bean soup and entress that had no taste. And end with surly servers and you have the makings of never coming here again!

I was searching for another restaurant today that apparently closed, so I went into Los Mayas instead. I arrived around 1pm, there were only three other people eating. The sign said seat yourself, and I always do what signs say. Within a couple minutes I was greeted by my server. I ordered my beverage and food, and a few minutes later some chips and salsa were brought to my table. The chips were warm and crispy, and the salsa wasn't too shabby, it had a bit of heat to it and at least some flavor. Little did I know at the time that the chips and salsa would be the high point of my meal. I ordered the Burrito Mexicano, which consisted of shredded beef, cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream. I also ordered a beef tostado a la carte. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: burritos are one of my favorite food groups. The fact that I didn't finish this one really says something. I have NEVER not finished a burrito in my life. That includes fast food burritos, frozen burritos, and that burrito I once picked out of a dumpster. (I'm not proud of that) I'm not sure what the flavor was in the shredded beef, but it wasn't good. As mightily as I tried to power through that burrito, my taste buds tapped out, and I was forced to admit defeat with a few bites remaining. I moved on to the tostada, it wasn't much better and I also left a portion of it remaining like so much discarded rubbish. The building, although a bit dated, has a lot of space and good natural lighting with all of the windows. Sure my table felt sticky, but I could overlook that if the food was good. They also have a full bar, and the service was pretty decent. It's a shame that I have to say no bueno.

I ordered over the phone for pickup. It was quick and easy. However... The place had that nauseating burnt oil smell when I walked in. The food was rough. I got a vegetarian combo because I thought that would be a safe bet after reading some reviews. Stupid greasy. Like a clearly visible layer that looked like a stick of butter was melted on top of everything. And crazy salty. Chips were stale, but the queso dip was good according to the other person I ordered for. Could've been the fact that this was a pickup order, but either way I would not want to try it again.

I really like this restaurant and go there usually once a month or so. Huge menu, chips and salsa automatically brought to the table with the salsa in a pitcher and each person given their own bowl, which is a life saver if you have double dippers with you! Food is good, decor I could be updated. The fajita quesadillas are unreal and you better be hungry if you order them. Guacamole could be better but other than that great consistent place.

    (4)
  • Jennyfer A.

Their guacamole was a bit too liquidy for my taste. Especially since it went inside the burrito, as a result, my burrito quickly became soggy making everything inside it tumble out spilling on to the dish. The prices are a little steep. The atmosphere is decent. Very rigid, too rigid with their no changing the stuff on the menu policy. They do not add or delete anything requested... Vegetarians beware. You can mostly only eat what is in the vegetarian section of the menu. I feel like the inside of the restaurant could be decorated better as well...

Another really good meal. Wife always goes for the enchiladas with mole sauce which she thoroughly enjoyed. I tried the carnitas rancheros which is my new favorite. The sauce was great. Will be back whenever we are in Clearwater.

I have lived in this area for 3 yrs and have been searching for good Mexican food, today I read reviews and decided on Los Mayas- so glad I did, the food was great, Tino was a wonderful server and we had plenty of food left over. I got the beef Chimichanga's- the best I"ve had in years, here or back in my home state- MO. You must stop by and have a meal, it doesn't always look opened but look for the lighted sign by the door..

This place is the kind of Mexican food that I like. So many other places around here are just terrible. So by comparison this place is even better. My husband loved the enchilada sauce, reminded him of San Antonio. I enjoyed the big basket of chips and cheese dip. We will be back

Ironically enough, just 5 short days after writing my "less-than-impressed" review of Los Mayas and mentioning that I wouldn't be rushing to come back again soon, my coworkers invited me to join them to grab a bite to eat on our lunch break. So I thought "what the heck, why not give it a try?" and a group of 5 of us headed over at 12 on a Friday afternoon. I decided to come again because I wanted to make sure my first 2 star review was fair and accurate, since that was previously based on a visit I had a year or more ago and I was curious to see if things had changed at all. So we arrive and it's dead inside, only 1 other small table is being occupied besides ours. The server was a bit slow getting started (this is the same as it's always been), yet the food came out pretty quickly once he finally placed our offer. I was a bit puzzled by the extremely fast speed of the food arrival. I noticed they have some lunch combos on the menu ranging between $5.25-$7.50, which is about a bit cheaper than the dinner options and still a decent portion size. I chose the tamale with rice and beans. We snacked on the chips and salsa while waiting for our meal. As I mentioned before, the chips are good, the salsa is nice and 'picante' but a little runny and watery. When the meal was delivered, I noticed the tamale and beans were hot, but not the rice. On the menu, it didn't give a thorough description of what to expect with the tamale, but when it came out it was chicken inside and coated with red sauce and salty ground beef on top. I probably could have passed on the ground beef if I knew ahead of time. I will say it was a very large portion of food for the price and the quality was just okay, same as before. By the end of the meal our server had dropped off the check and at this particular restaurant you pay up at the counter so I paid and headed out. Luckily we did have enough time to eat here within our 1 hour lunch break and were not late. One of my coworkers who joined us is a fellow yelper newbie and said she'd be giving it 2 stars too. Clearwater is a Mecca of local, authentic Mexican places and this one just isn't my favorite sadly, but it was okay overall.

I don't know why there's so many negative reviews when this is honestly one of my favorite places to eat. The prices are phenomenal and the portions are very large. They give you a huge basket of chips and the food is always out pretty quick. The staff doesn't speak great English but they do speak fine and I've never had a problem communicating with them

A previous reviewer said that this place doesn't serve true authentic Mexican food. I have to say he's probably right, if you want actual authentic Mexican food check out this list. yelp.com/list/most-authe… and go for it. What this place does serve is real authentic Tex Mex and having spent several years living in Texas I was happy to find them. The menu is extensive with some explicitly vegetarian options for those of you into that sort of thing. The service is outstanding and the portion sizes are just HUGE. I ordered chicken fajitas they came in a huge pile on a SIZZLING hot cast iron plate that was still searing the meat and veggies as it was set on the table. My friend got a combination plate that will continue to feed her for a few more days. Everything was just the way it should be complimentary warm chips and salsa, attentive wait staff, beer served with a icy mug, drinks filled, to go boxes brought without having to ask. And piles and piles of really good food. If you're looking for authentic ~Mexican~ look elsewhere but if you want some Tex Mex this is the place to be. And of course there were Mexican people eating at the Mexican restaurant. My rule for ethnic restaurants: If there are no people of the ethnicity of the restaurant eating there . . . move on. If a Mexican restaurant is full of nothing but gringos just save yourself the trouble and go to Taco Bell. I'm vacillating between 4 and 5 stars. In the end I'm doing with 4 because they don't have Caldo de Res on Sunday morning they way the Tex Mex places in Texas do. Other than that though, they're awesome.

Day/time of visit: weekend dinner Atmosphere: casual, bright/open - 2 walls of windows Arrived during prime dining hours on a weekend - not very busy. Chips and salsa are nothing special, salsa was very boring tomato sauce. I ordered Enchiladas Crema - chicken enchiladas smothered in a very heavy cream sauce with a few mushroom slices. The sauce tasted like super hoggy Stroganoff sauce - perhaps it's authentic someplace I'm not familiar with but the combo just seemed odd to me. BF ordered the burrito supreme (1 ground beef burrito, 1 chicken burrito) - was supposed to be covered in cheese sauce but there wasn't much however there was a lot of sour cream. Would not order either entree again. Wasn't really impressed with the food and felt the prices were high for the quality of food. No drink specials and drink prices were high. Server was not attentive and the table felt sticky and needed to be cleaned. I will give a second try some time (no rush!) and provide update.

Love this place. My teenage kids and I come here at least once a month. The decor is simple and a little dated. You'll have Mexican music playing softly in the background while being waited on by a pleasant staff.staff. Oh, The food is just simply delicious!

Went recently as it was pouring and needed food locally. Though the lady who helped me was warm and friendly, the place had a background odor of sewage wafting through it and the food I ordered was .. meh. So-so at best. Disappointing. I won't be back. Days later, we drove to Dunedin and had a great dinner at a place there - don't remember the name. Worth the drive.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
