My family and I tried this restaurant on opening night, eager to enjoy fresh Indian cuisine so close to home, and thrilled to have a good Indian restaurant right in the city. We ordered takeout and were completely disappointed. It felt and tasted like we were at fast food joint, choosing our own toppings and nothing tasted authentic, There was, in fact, nothing at all authentic about our meals. I have no idea what that rice was, but it wasn't basmati. The sauce on my chicken zaikka was WAY too spicy, and I LOVE spicy. My daughter's chicken tikka was awful. There was corn in on of our toppings - I have never seen corn in a chicken tikka. None of us ate much that evening. I will not go back.

Good lunch option in Downtown! Anyone who has been to Wilmington knows there aren't many options for a quick, tasty, affordable meal. This place rocks! You choose your protein, carb, and sauce. Add on as many fixings as you'd like and you have a tasty, quick, and filling meal. For those who have never had true "Indian" food this is a good way to see if you like curry or not. If you enjoyed your dish here it is time to visit one of the many full service Indian restaurants in Delaware Also, the staff here are so friendly!

What a wonderful new idea for a restaurant! It's Indian food in the style of Qdoba. This is the perfect spot for lunch. It's very fast, friendly, and delicious! Don't come here expecting the same Indian food you have grown accustomed to. It is a new twist on Indian food, and very delicious! I have been here many times while working in Wilmington, and I absolutely love it. Quick rundown of the menu: You get a choice of dish: rice bowl, salad, or naan roll. The rice bowl is rice with your ingredients on top, the salad bowl is salad with your ingredients on top, and the naan roll is your toppings on top of a piece of naan bread, rolled up like a burrito. Your next choice is protein, where you choose Zaikka chicken, tandoori chicken (my fave), lamb, or paneer. Then, you choose your curry: Zaikka (really spicy), Korma (my fave), Tikka masala, or spinach. Last, you choose your ingredients. I normally get a tandoori chicken rice bowl with korma curry, red onions, green onions, boondi, lettuce and cilantro. To the other reviewer who gave one star: You shouldn't have come here expecting an authentic Indian cuisine. One look at the menu would have told you that it is not authentic. Sure, there are Indian flavors, but you can't expect to see butter chicken, palak paneer, or anything of the sort. Also, you should have anticipated that the spiciest thing on the menu would actually be really spicy. I'm surprised you said you were looking for real Indian food and turned away from Zaikka due to it being to spicy. Real Indian food is spicy.

Very laid back atmosphere, very friendly staff, and excellent food! One of my favorite places for an inexpensive, low-key dinner out.

I had the zaikka chicken and tofu rice bowl with a side of samosa. Tasty. Quick and friendly service. Try it out. The flavors are authentic. And the toppings are very fresh.

I have been coming here regularly for lunch over the last month or so, and I'm glad I discovered this place. First things first- Zaikka is not trying to be an upscale Indian restaurant, so if that's the standard you are expecting perhaps you should look elsewhere instead of trashing a new business with a one star review. It's a nice spot to grab a quick bite in LOMA, and provides a welcome change from the typical lunchtime fare. You build your own meal from the bottom up- choosing between rice or naan, lamb or chicken, four different curry sauces, and an array of toppings & garnishes. The menu is somewhat limited, but I have enjoyed everything I've tried. I love the Zaikka curry sauce, which actually has a perfect balance of heat and flavor for those of us who REALLY enjoy the spicy stuff. Ingredients are fresh and healthy- not heavy or greasy like some Indian food I've had. You will leave full, but won't drift into a midafternoon coma. Meals are served in plastic containers with plastic forks, which may be a turn-off to some (I personally don't care). Dining area is comfortable and relaxed, with original artwork decorating the walls. The owners (husband and wife) are always friendly and welcoming. There are certainly restaurants in the area that provide a more "authentic" or "traditional" Indian restaurant experience, but Zaikka is good at what they do. Nothing fancy, just simple, fast, delicious and reasonably priced. Recommended.

A lot of people I work with in the area have been going here, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I'm not a big Indian food eater so I would defer to those that really know the in's and out's of sauces. But, as a newbie, I really enjoyed it. I thought that the food tasted fresh and the sauces perked up any dryness of the pre-cut chicken. I think the flavor was solid and the staff was really nice. The atmosphere was basic, but all in all, I enjoyed myself and I would return.

What a great place!! The only way I can describe it is as an Indian version of Chipotle --- you choose your meat and curry sauce and pile on the condiments to your liking --- only WAY more choices than Chipotle, and immensely more tasty. You can see the owners take great pride in their food and space. Everything we had was delicious and everything tasted fresh and hot despite being pre-prepared. We had naan and samosas as sides, all the chutneys were wonderful. And they have beer! The dining area was clean and beautifully decorated, with colorful art all around. I'm so happy we gave it a try despite Yelp's mixed reviews - and very happy to find an affordable Indian place close to home!

I took a friend there for her birthday. She is a huge fan of Indian food. I was not, just couldn't get past the smell. We wanted to go somewhere we've never been and decided a trip to downtown would fit the bill. Let me just say, I am now a fan of Indian food. The restaurant is bright and clean. As a newbie to Indian cuisine this was the best place to start. The staff was very friendly and did a great job explaining all the foods to me. The food was very fresh with lots of flavor. I've been back several times and will return very soon. I just wish they were open on the weekends.

This place is pretty lame if you are used to actual indian food. It costs the same amount of money for a small meal here, as it does for a full, hot, freshly cooked meal at an indian restaurant. The portions are tiny, I was not satisfied with what i was given at all, It lacked flavor, and the amount you get is a joke. I only weigh 130 lbs and it felt like half a meal to me. Its a nice idea, to have an indian restaurant on market street. But honestly this place is a crazy waste of your money, go to india grille, or some other real indian restaurant, there are plenty of options. I will say, if you are in a pinch, the food is absolutely edible, and really not all that bad. Its like some decent food you would find at the airport, with silly high prices for very small portions. But at the airport you would expect that, on market street... not so much.

Indian fast food? No, thank you! I was excited to try this place because the concept is cool (similar to Qdoba or Chipotle) and the price is cheaper compared to classic Indian restaurants, but it tastes TERRIBLE! Watery sauces that are spicy but have no flavor and they give you the smallest portions of chicken I've ever seen! Now I need REAL Indian food to make up for this mistake.

  • Kamath V.

Terrible food. First off.... The meal starts of at 9$ and that doesn't even do Justice to the Quantity served. Went in ordered a lamb and naan bread extra meat. So the break down, the basic price was 8.95 and too less a quanitity. extra meat 2.95, Extra naan 1.50, So called Raita a hot sauce quanity container 1$ total went up to 15$.. Secondly, This is coming from an indian who worked in DC and often dined at MERZI, that is a perfect example of a sumptious Chiportle style Indian meal and value for money, being in DC they are so Reasonable Compared to the Cost of living there. Thirdly the taste, YUCK! Bland, half coocked meat and the chutnies are Extreme. Do yourself a favor SKIP THIS PLACE AT ALL TIMES! there are better out there.

Just what you want for fast tasty fresh food at a great price...and much more ...today running in not realizing there were just closed for Thanksgiving..we were served with a smile AND told not to worry we could sit and eat while they cleaned up...when was the last time someone welcomed you when they were closing....great staff . Thank you. chicken tikka bowl was excellent.

I enjoy coming here it's the chipotle of Indian fast food. The place is very clean and modern with plenty of seating area. I enjoy coming here to pick up samosa and a mango lassie. The food is good quality. The owner is very friendly. The staff is always super friendly as well. I think this place is a wonderful addition to downtown Wilmington. The last thing we need is another donut shop or hoagie place.

This place is not bad at all! Indian chipotle....pick your carbs (rice, etc), pick a meat (tandoori chicken), pick a sauce (masala), and add toppings (cilantro, green sauce, and chili). It cost around ~8 (depending on the protein you pick). Portion was just right, decent amount to be satisfied. Friendly service! Plenty of space to sit! Located next to Bain's deli (past Loma) on market street.

First things first, let's not call this place an Indian Chipotle equivalent. There are many differences and most of those make this s terrible place to eat at: 1. What's up with the tiny portion sizes - you start to doubt the intentions of the restaurant when they serve you four chickpeas (from chickpea curry), 3 pieces of paneer, half a spoonful of curry (in such small quantity they should call it sauce instead), and half a bite of everything else. Their bowl may give you the impression of a chipotle bowl but it is quite shallow and only half filled with food. Chipotle, a place I frequent enough to know this, fills you up with food for 8-9 bucks. Zaika's bowl costs around the same and is only about half the food. Their margins must be astronomically high. I'd be an investor but not s customer. 2. Indian food is flavorful and tastier than what they serve here. Maybe it's because of only half a spoonful of curry that I don't taste the Indian spices/flavors. Nah, I'm kidding, everything here is very bland and lacking in flavor. Chipotle's food is much more flavorful by comparison. 3. Serving a side of $1.75 naan bread on the side of a $9 rice bowl makes little sense unless you want more bland to go on the side of bland mess that is the rice bowl. All things said, I'm not coming back here unless they increase their portion sizes. When I go to a restaurant, I want to taste the food and I want to feel that they want me to enjoy their food. When they serve me in a stingy fashion (read 4 chickpeas, 3 paneer cubes), I doubt their intentions. Let's see how long they can keep in business like this. On second thoughts, I wouldn't be an investor here either.

I am usually not the picky. But the food here is terribly bad. I have never had this bad Aloo Tikki Chat ever in my life. Their curry and protein was equally bad :( Very disappointed!

Cheap, quick, delicious Gotta take it for what it is.. This is not gourmet Indian food by any means and it's not trying to be. This place is great if you have a craving for Indian food, want something affordable and have limited time.

If you haven't eaten here you should! The food is really good and it's fast too. It's very clean inside, and the staff, especially the owner/manager is very polite and friendly. Keep it up Zaikka!

Great service, but fast food south Indian food is not for me! Reminded me of Chipotle in the way it was set up. I went toward the close of the day, so it was a little rough. Older dried out rice, and there was a thin film over all the sauces, as it looks like they stood stagnant for a while. I gave it a shot though! It was flavorful, but the samosa I ordered(sitting under the hot lamp) had the texture as if it was sitting under that same hot lamp for 3 days. They should implement some sort of "samosa'' rule, and swap them bad boys out every 29 minutes or so......just my thoughts! I would never go again.

We just left after our first visit and we feel taken advantage of. My parents asked if they could have channa with their Tandoori chicken. They were given it in a small sauce cup alongside their order. We expected there to be an extra charge but were a bit floored when our total came up to forty five dollars for three rice bowls and two sodas. The two sauce cups of channa were charged as full orders and cost us almost fifteen dollars. Unfortunately my parents were not made aware that asking for the channa would mean being charged for another full order. I could somewhat understand charging eight dollars if they were given enough for a single order but they weren't even given enough for even half. Even then according to the menu, doubling your protein shouldn't cost more than three dollars. The food wasn't bad but the sour taste of what feels like dishonest business practices will linger for a long time. I don't believe we will be coming back.

Not sure what makes this place deserving of the remarks "fresh" and "not fast food"...The other reviewers need to break out of their comfort zone and eat at an actual indian restaurant. It's based on similar sets of ingredients and one of the folks serving is Indian... but good Indian this most definitely is not. It's not horrible ...but nothing to get excited about. Only marginally better than not having an indian option in downtown wilmington. The good reviews for such marginal places like this make me dislike Wilmington even more and the people who consider this joint 'ethnic'... And the naan... sucked.... big time. Christ the naan sucked.

  • Chris G.

I agree with the reviewers that referred to this place as the Indian food equivalent to Chipotle. This restaurant is a nice addition to Wilmington's Loma section. The first step in ordering is deciding if you want a rice bowl, naan roll, or salad greens. I always go with the rice bowl. Next, you have to choose a protein. I won't bore you with the various protein options they have, but I do want to point out that there are a couple of vegan protein options. I usually order the Zaikka chicken, which the server said is spicy, but I didn't find it spicy. There are several Indian inspired sauces to choose as your condiments. The last things to decide on are the toppings: masala chickpea, cilantro, red onions, etc. I was glad to see that they have mango lassie. It's a little small for the price. The place is very clean, and the food along with service is good. Parking at times can be a little tricky. I'm glad to put this place into my lunch/dinner rotation.

Amazing service and the food was AWESOME!! My husband and I went here the other night and the woman that greeted us was awesome. The ingredients were fresh and we took our food to go, which is exactly what we wanted on a Friday movie night. This place is awesome if you want healthy to go food. Love this fresh and low cal concept. We will definitely be back!

This is one of the few eateries in Delaware that I truly enjoyed. It's the perfect spot for a quick bite of Indian food. Other reviewers are certainly correct in comparing it to Chipotle. Like Chipotle, I often found that I could never finish one portion. With guaranteed leftovers, I always felt like I got my money's worth. I pretty much ate everything here, and I always topped with the spiciest sauce. Yum! And I loved the ginormous samosas. I also appreciated the alway-friendly staff. No, this Indian food might not be particularly "authentic", but it's quick, cheap, and tasty.

Yes, the place has this cool concept of being a Chipotle serve style. But NO WAY DOES IT WORK FOR SOUTH ASIAN FOOD. South Asian food flavor comes from having the spices, roots, vegetables and or meat cooked together so the flavor infuse each other. By separating the ingredients you loose many subtle and underlaying flavors that make Indian food special. This is probably why many of the reviews describe the food as spicy versus being flavorful and authentic Indian food. It tastes like boiled rice with cream, red chili, and cilantro at the end. The meat was not fresh and bland. I gave this place two tries and both time it was a fail. The one strong point about this place is that it is clean. The restrooms are clean and are for customers only. The decor is modern, fresh, and trendy. I guess it is a good place to take a wannabe Hare Krishna hippy or Wannabe Bollywood junky that has never had real Indian food.

A refreshing, modern take on Indian food. The samosas were light, and not greasy, as so many are. The Zaikka chicken was fantastic, spicy but flavorful.

Fantastically Fresh healthy food and great personable staff. My favorite part of Indian food is the flavor, which this place has nailed. My second favorite thing in Indian food is the cream which was naught to be found. I will say I enjoy the mouthfeel of full creamy goodness, but that would have me in the grave within a few years. This place is one that the epicurean and the dietician will appreciate. Though if you're like me you'll feel they're a tad stingy with the meat, I never leave there feeling hungry or dissatisfied, so they know what they're doing, no need to double down on the meat (as I would normally do). Delicious food, great flavor, without the heart palpatations. Two thumbs way up.

I eat here regularly (three times a week)! I love it! I enjoy the choices of Indian food and the casualness of the restaurant. Its clean and very efficient! The prices are under 10$ for almost everything and you get alot of food. The style of the restaurant is basically an Indian MOEs, you select everything from sauce to meats to toppings and build your meal.

Ate here tonight with my wife, we got take out. Let me start with the SERVICE because thats what stood out first and foremost. The women took the time to give us samples and explain to us EVERYTHING on the menu and encouraged us to mix and match all we wanted. Everything was EXTREMELY fresh and flavorful, oh and HEALTHY!! all of their meals are under 600calories or less. My wife loved it more than I! I ended up giving the women a $10 tip on a $19 order JUST because of how nice and awesome she was. We will return, alot.

I'm not sure if the people at Zaikka were watching America's Next Great Restaurant, but they seem to follow a Chipotle-inspired workflow of choosing your protein, curry and additional items. It is a tried and true concept, but just doesn't result in the same sort of quick, can't-miss options that you can find at Chipotle. The result isn't terrible, but it's not something that sticks in my mind. The real problem was the quality of my food. When chicken is pre-cooked and left to sit in a tray before being served, as opposed to being made-to-order, it can become dry, and that was the case when I tried the food at Zaikka. I will have to go back again and see if my experience was just a fluke or what one can expect. Downtown Wilmington is still in the process of re-inventing itself. From The Grand to the newly reopened Queen, and a handful of new dining and entertainment options ... I can't wait until residents are heading downtown as frequently as they go out to Trolley Square. I'd like to say that Zaikka has a future in the new downtown, but I just don't see it.

I was in Wilmington downtown 2 weeks back and tried their Paneer Tikka platter and it was just grilled to perfection. Very authentic flavors with all freshness. I tried their Mango lassi and it was very tasty. I will definitely go back there on my next visit.

A quick and easy way to get your indian fix. Nothing outstanding, nor is it bad. The way food is served, is kind of unique for indian restaurants. You get to mix and match different meats, curries and toppings. So you get quiet a few choices. But they'll need to stay on top, to vary the menu. Folks may soon get bored of mixing and matching the same selection.

I was fortunate enough to attend an early tasting of Zaikka - my wife did all their logo and color scheme design, so we were invited along with several others to try out selections from the menu. Neither of us had ever tried Indian food, so it was something of an adventure; fortunately, Zaikka was the perfect introduction. Zaikka boasts a pleasing, modern design (I'll leave out how excellent I think the logo is, lest I come across biased) - it's got a great ambiance, plays low-key but very pleasant music, and it's very, very clean. The food was delicious - again, having never tried Indian cuisine before, I cannot speak to its authenticity, but I can tell you that the curries and chutneys were a wonderful experience of interesting and unique tastes, and that the meat was perfectly seasoned, tender, and flavorful. The braised lamb, in particular, was incredible - combined with a splash of spicy curry, it's absolutely divine. Counter service is the name of the game here - it's not fast-food by any means (and the prices reflect that, although they're extraordinarily reasonable considering the portions and the simple quality they offer), but you are able to choose your spread based on what you see in front of you. Drinks vary from basic soda-fountain drinks to a surprisingly varied selection of craft and domestic bottled beers. I hope Wilmington's denizens give Zaikka a chance - the family is a superbly friendly and personable bunch, I can't say enough good things about the food (and I've tried most of it), and the relaxing atmosphere is conducive to a pleasing meal. And, hey, that logo's not bad either. :)

This is a great fast-n-healthy concept for Indian cuisine. I love that it is affordable and well portioned. Also, pretty unique dining experience for this type of cuisine. I love this place and they are vegetarian-vegan friendly. The owners are very hardworking and nice. Keep up the good work! I wish they were open on Saturdays.

So a colleague of mine took me here while I was on a business trip in Wilmington, and my first impression was "wow, this is an Indian Chipotle." And it is, down to the rice bowls and naan rolls. Select your protein, sauce, and veggies/toppings. It's not great Indian food, but I enjoyed it. The sauces for the somasas were pretty tasty. If you live in the area, it's a nice place to stop by for a quick lunch, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.
