The BEST PIZZA, an AWESOME neighborhood watering hole! Great service and warm atmosphere.

Great pizza and sides here. The bartender was more into her cellphone and texting than actual customer service. Sadly this is common in bars/restaurants that aren't super busy.

Finally! I have been driving by the defunct Pala's Pizza on the corner of 7th and Union for years, being forced to look at the ridiculous (and maybe the reason of their demise) "World's Worst Pizza" sign. I have constantly wondered to myself when a new business would open? There were rumblings that a Two Fat Guys would move in, and that never happened. Somehow though, in what feels like almost overnight, a new business popped up and took over the space all under my radar. An old friend suggested we catch up for drinks, and recommended Rocco's. I was at a loss, and had to ask where the hell it was. A new spot in Wilmington? I was in. After taking a quick look on their Facebook page and website ( roccoitaliangrill.com ), it appears that there was a Grand Opening on June 24th, so the place is VERY new. My wife and I strolled in on a Wed. night around 8:15 pm to meet Rock and his wife for a few beers, and the place was packed. We were immediately greeted by the owner. He welcomed us, asked if we had been in before, and offered us a table. We declined waiting for a table, and thankfully, a few people were just getting up from their bar seats, so we were able to grab a corner spot at the bar. I have to say the interior looks great. I had never been inside in it's previous incarnation, but its obvious that a lot of updating had been done. There are a number of high top tables, a big bar, and it looked like some booths in the back. Lots of fresh modern tiling, and plenty of fresh paint. There were a number of flat screen TVs playing the Phils Red Sox game, and the place instantly had a great home town sports bar feel. The crowd was definitely interested in the game. I am a connoisseur of good dive bars (the more 1970's brown paneling, the better), but this place certainly is not. It has a fresh feel to it. I immediately liked the place, and I hadn't even had a drink. Best part was to come. After Rock arrived with wife in tow, he informed me that all drinks were $3. Now, I am not sure this is entirely true, but the pint of Guinness, and the glass of house white that we ordered definitely were, and his Blue Moon was as well. Our bartender was friendly, but not entirely adept at pouring Guinness. Way too much head. Typically, I'd speak up, but this place is new, and I just let it slide. The owner actually stopped over after we had been sitting at the bar talking for about an hour, and asked if we were doing alright, and if he could get us anything. I liked his mindfulness, and I didn't find it intrusive at all. I did take a look at the menu, and saw a number of fellow patrons working on personal sized pizza, and wings. The menu looks pretty typical. Subs, burgers, cheese steaks, etc. Nothing really jumped out at me as being especially interesting. Its all the same stuff you'd find in most places like Season's, Pat's, Grotto, etc, but looks to be a little more authentically Philly. I didn't order any food that night as I had earlier crushed about 5 killer boneless chicken thighs I had grilled, and my weight in salad. I will definitely be trying the food soon. I can never resist a porkette with prov and rabe for very long. As I was looking this business up on Yelp, I did notice the previous review. The guy slammed this place, and wrote the review 8 days before the Grand Opening after only one visit. (Check the guy's profile. "His last meal" is classic) Usually, if a lay into a place on Yelp though its been after more than a few visits (see reviews for La Tolteca and Harvest Grill). That way I know they consistently have issues. Trust me, I want independent small businesses to thrive in Wilmington. There are too many shitty chain restaurants clogging up this town as is. Also, you have to give a new business a bit of a break when they first open. There are a lot of kinks to work out. I will definitely be back to Rocco's though, and try to give an update with some food reviews. More to come...

I want to like this place. The pizza is always great and they have a good assortment of drinks. But the service is...they have a couple of really nice servers. But some of the bartenders are just flat out rude. The male bartender and the female bartender with black hair who was there when I went back in march..aloof, snobby and just kinda rude. The male bartender was nice to some of the male patrons who I assumed were regulars but short and curt with my boyfriend. Think his name was Dom from what I heard. Find some nicer and not so jaded servers please and I'll definitely be back

Good neighborhood bar with some great food. Try the crab soup - lots of crabmeat and a nice amount of heat in the spices.

This place is great! Was back last night after several months. The portobello mushroom salad is so good and we had the di Parma pizza as well. Great blend of tastes and the crust was perfect - nicely crisp. Kept it simple with the drinks- a draft beer and a glass of wine.

Nice impromptu dinner date. You can have a intimate conversation whereas you may also enjoy the fact that it's a sports bar too. Friendly staff and patrons.

We waited here for our ride and ordered chicken and bacon nachos. The waitress was great and checked on us several times. The nachos were not cheesy at all, but the chicken and bacon were pretty good. Someone had pizza at the bar and it looked fantastic, I would come back to try it.

When we moved from Philadelphia, we knew one of the things we would miss most would be Slice pizza. I think we have found a pretty suitable alternative in the pizza of Rocco's, particularly the margherita. It is so good. The basil is so fresh and the sauce is wonderful. We have tried a few of the other pizzas as well, but this is our fave. Salads are good, too!

  • Brigit B.

How ridiculous is it that I've waited this long to yelp Rocco until now. I failed you yelpers, and for that, I can only apologize. Until recently I've never steered away from their elite pizza. Although great, toppings are unnecessary. My favorite is a large cheese pizza. The sauce to cheese ratio is flawless, the dough, most frequently thin, is perfectly chewy, yet crispy. Impressive right? I've tried spin/artichoke, pepperoni and the margherita but the cheese solidly has been the most satisfying. As for the other menu items, I'd recommend the grilled calamari, mussels, the portobella salad and a random sandwich they let me create!!!! All very good, generous portions and the product is consistent no matter who the chef is! My creation is a long roll, mayo, roasted red peppers fried long hots, broccoli raab, fresh mozz, toasted of course. Not to mention I added the $2 garlic parm fries. So much yum happening here. The menu is pretty extensive, I look forward to trying more but each time I enter, it always seems to be pizza:30. Staff are welcoming (great with menu altering), locals are chatty and they have great specials throughout the week. Rocco, you got this food game on lock, 5 stars deserved!

  • Jessie H.

Get the pizza!! The crust is crunch and cooked just right. They also give generous topping portions. We got the big pizza for 3 people and had leftover. My other friend got the chicken parm- average. We also got the calamari and meatballs for apps- average, nothing special. Four stars for the pizza! Service is super friendly!! They have an outdoor seating too so we sat outside because it was nice outside.

I ordered a pizza from Rocco's last night and was pleasantly surprised. The young man who answered the phone was awesome, really chipper and friendly. He informed me that they have a special on Tuesdays for a large cheese pizza for $8 so that's what I got. The pizza was fantastic! I'm sad that I didn't try it sooner, I'll definitely be back to dine in soon.

Rocco's Itlian Sports whatever was pretty good. When my buddy told me he was taking me to a place for happy hour I'd assumed it would be the usual shit hole he always takes me to since he just gets drunk wherever anyways. I was pleasantly surprised at how well kept, tidy, and aesthetically pleasing his choice was for once. The bar food is hit and miss though. The Italian Nachos were amazing and I would absolutely recommend them. The bacon cheddar fries were lacking in comparison, and the wings while well cooked were somewhat lacking in flavor. Service by the bartenders was excellent though.

  • Gregory C.

As other reviewers have noted, maybe the only non-positive thing about this place is the random food quality. The pizza, however, is amazing, which may be what biased my review, but I've been here with family before and they weren't amazed by all of their dishes, but always loved the pizza. Minus the potential inconsistency with the entrées, the rest of this place is on point: drinks, prices, service, and atmosphere are all top notch. In a nutshell: get pizza/salad, and enjoy cheap drinks in a nice atmosphere. Also, Joseph D. what the hell are you on? I've never heard anything like that about this place, seems like an entirely fabricated story.

The resident meat-eater brought home a slice of 10" pie leftover from his lunch with coworkers, which I happily consumed. The simple fact that his huge-eater stomach couldn't finish it means the food here is BIG but as I also found out, GOOD! The crust is that perfect happy medium between thin/crispy and thick/chewy. So perfect that I didn't realize I had been craving it until I had my first crispy, chewy bite. It is also sturdy enough to hold all the heavy-handed toppings. We had the Rocco Special, which is pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, green peppers and black olives. The sausage slices were a half an inch thick, and the onions and peppers were in chunks, giving them a nice crunch even though completely cooked. Can't comment on the cheese because the meat-eater is non-dairy, but with this much texture and flavor on a slice, I didn't miss the queso at all. Seriously a good pie, and I will be back soon to give this place a further look.

The only thing I don't like about Rocco's is that it is not within walking distance of my house. When I learned that drinks are $3 all the time I looked at the two gal pals I was dining with and broke into a delighted smile. "We're home!" I said. The porketta sandwich with broccoli raab is super, with tender juicy pork. The broccoli raab is garlicky, with some crunch to it. And come hungry because this is one big sandwich. Friendly help and an open-air eating area are bonuses, altho the patio tends to attract smokers. Blech to that.

My original review was removed- here it is again- Finally visited this place last weekend. Food was very good, as was the service. This place needs to do this and they'll get 5 stars: Fire the drunk bartender (male) who is behind the bar drinking heavily on Saturday nights and is screaming and hollering along with the mostly male partons sitting in the bar area. They all were very drunk and very loud. They appeared to be regulars who live in the local neighborhood. It was very hard to have a nice dinner with the drunks in the bar yelling and screaming obscenities and making fools of themselves. Like I said, the food and service were very good. No complaints there. But the ignorant, loud, drunk bar patrons have got to go.

I'm a recent transplant to Wilmington I had very low expectation for this place given my dining experience thus far in the neighborhood, but I was reasonably pleased. Clearly a pub has to meet a much lower standard than say.... an "authentic Italian" restaurant. Beer select is decent but mostly bottles. On draft is the usual list of undrinkable dirty water American swills (bud, coors, corona, etc). The Porketta is good but it's probably the highlight of the food options with everything else probably being just good enough to not disappoint. Will I return?... maybe, maybe not. I only ended up here because my first choice nearby was not open for lunch on Sunday. If that happens again, I suppose. But I don't see why I'd make plans for this place. But at least it's "good enough"... given the options nearby... 4 stars.

  • Bigfoot A.

I'm always on the lookout for awesome pizza and this place is pretty good. I prefer it to be a thinner crust with a crispy bottom to it and this place hit both of my standards. For a while I didn't get anything but pizza from here but I tried some sandwiches just to get a good idea of what it was all about and let me just say, stick to the pizza. Some asshole left a raving review of the porketta so I tried that and it sucked ass. It was dry and the pork had a smell reminescent of some of the girls I knew in HS, fishy. The crowd here is mostly made up of douche bags and old people who don't realize that they are old so I recommend getting your food to go. The service was friendly but slow.

I spent hundreds of dollars in Rocco's and have a family and neighborhood family history at Pala's. I went in one night with $300 dress shoes, Italian dress pants and a black polo shirt. The bartender who drinks behind the bar and runs home and back to serve alcohol told me I was wearing a "wifebeater" and that I was no longer welcome in the establishment. Major bad move. My family had gone to that building for food for over 40 years. Bartender told me it was a "black thing" and that he had to be fair to everyone (?) Not my kind of place anymore. Blue Parrot has always remembered me and I'll continue to patronize them as I have.

Again mixed review. Good drink prices. Wine 3-4$. Beers 3$ ish as well all the time! Ate pizza- didnot like thick chewy and ' buttery '? Crust. Had a bad order of muscles. Very fishy and off. Sent back quite apologetic and I still had to pay for it. Not cool. It was un edible. Fried dessert not so tastey.

I went to Rocco's with my family and here is my complete experience: Service: When I walked in I was greated promptly and told a table was being set for my party of 5. Our waitress was knowledgeable and polite. Food: As a table we shared the wings (asked for well done and they were just done. Makes me worry if I had not asked for well done. Sauce was good), Mussels in white sauce (very small mussels, and the white sauce was too salty), Fried Calamari (Very good, lots of tenticles, and crispy. The marinara was not at all impressive. This is an Italian place right?). For dinner we tried their calling card based on the newspaper review - PIZZA. Toppings were super fresh, but the crust was much too thick (think dominos pizza). If they had a nice thin crunchy crust I would have given the pizza a good review. Drinks were good. Based on price I really cannot complain too much ($100 for 5 people). Atmosphere: Top notch, and quaint. Very nice decor, and plenty of nice big hi-def TV's. This is a great "beer and snack while you watch the game" place. If they clean up the food, this place could be great.

Like many other Delawareans, I have passed this location for years and always wanted to try the "worlds worst pizza." Went to rocco's tonight with five of my cousins..the place was packed. All ages, all types of people. I sat next to a multi-million dollar real estate developer in DE while 20 year olds sat in eagle jerseys at the bar. Food was good. I had pizza as did many of my dinner companions. Saw the nachos come out--whoa. Might give another trolley square establishment a run for its money. Chopped antipastos, bruschetta, pizza all looked worth ordering. All I could think about was "my husband is going to love this place." Texted him as soon as I took my first bite. Awesome to find a good pizza place in wilmington. Best part? Our bill was under $20 per person. Yes, we all drank, yes we all had our own entrees.

I want to like this place, I really do but it is completely inconsistent. We've been in many times, and it seems to be getting worse each time. I love the $3 for any drink aspect, and our server has always been great. What comes out of the kitchen is another story. The porkette has gone from completely juicy and full of flavor to horribly dry and bland. I ordered the veggie Stromboli and the broccoli actually had a rotten, fowl smell to it when I cut into it. Last visit, the sandwiches were ordered with a few special requests such as no cheese and no mayo. The sandwiches came out with cheese and mayo. Our server apologized and told us she put it in correctly, but they can't read in the kitchen. I sure hope they can improve and get back on track where they were earlier on, but in the meantime we will take a break from this place.

Decided to give Rocco's a re-go after their "Grand Opening." Found out Blue Moons are $2, which is a pretty amazing deal, and tried their Stromboli this time. I actually received my food this time, which was a definite plus, and it was actually pretty good. The crust is what sets the stromboli off though, as the toppings are your typical pizza shop toppings (steak-umms, the jarred mushrooms, etc). It comes out perfect -- crunchy on the outside and still soft on the outside. A friend of mine got the chicken cutlet sandwich, which I regret not getting. Comes on a great sesame roll, and the cutlet is pretty damn good itself. Needless to say, we'll be back to give it a third go round.

I went last night for dinner with friends, but I've had the pizza, which is pretty good, in my limited pizza expertise. We had appetizers: fries with old bay and cheese, onion rings and nachos. Not bad but you can that anywhere in most bars in the area. For my main dish, I ordered the eggplant parmesan, it comes with pasta and a house salad, portions were very generous and delicious. The waistaff was polite and it's a good atmosphere to catch a game and relax, it can be a little cramped at tables, but not that big of a deal. Will definitely be returning.

***Updated 12/1/11...wrote an email to Rocco's after my dismal night there this past Sunday. Not looking for anything other than a response in that as all I wrote previously was that the food was great but service was awful. No response whatsoever so obviously they just don't care.Sad as seems I'm not the only one here on Yelp making comments about the service. My advice? There are some really great places in Trolley Square/Little Italy that want your business so why bother with this place.

This was actually my second visit to Rocco's. My first visit was about a month ago after a Blue Rock's game with my son. We ordered Pizza, and it was quite good. Perfect crust and very liberal with the toppings. This time I tried a burger, medium rare. Lately I've found most establishments tend to overcook their burgers, but to my delight it actually came out a perfect medium rare. Just the right amount of red. Large burgers too. When you can't eat it without making a mess, you know it's a good size. They have a very friendly staff, and they seem to already know many of their customers by name. The owner is very friendly and was there working hard both times I came to dine. They did not have a kids menu, but they did not hesitate to meet my picky 4yr old daughter's request for a sliced tomato and ketchup. They even brought her some sliced oranges as well. We went with other friends who used to dine in the same location when it was Pala's. She had small pizza, and he had a very generous salad. They thanked us for introducing it to them and I'm sure they will return as will we. If light Italian fare, burgers etc. is what you are looking for, and some pretty good beer prices, I don't think it gets much better than this.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
