Good sushi! Specialty rolls are yummy - i like their alli roll, west chester roll, wilmington roll. Id stick to sushi though at this place. They have a pan asian menu and their korean dishes arent very good i thought.

Went here on "date night" tonight. Upon entry, we got sat immediately in the very small dining room. I'm not sure if there's more to the restaurant, but from what I saw, the dining room is small with little space between each table. The decor is very chic and modern, the seats are comfortable, and the general atmosphere is really nice. Our server never introduced herself, but was very sweet and attentive the whole time we sat - I didn't have to go out of my way to look for her once. My date and I both got drinks, I got the French Fantasy & he got the Nerd, both martinis. They were excellent and I had two because it was so yummy, and at only $10 it was the cheapest drink I've bought in a while. Onto the food, my date got the shrimp shaimu (sp?) appetizer, and I ordered the edamame. The broth that the dumpling-like shrimp appetizer was served in was amazing and the dumpling was perfectly cooked, delicious. As far as the edamame goes, it's pretty hard to mess up. It was a little undercooked for my taste, but it's beans.. So really.. For the entrees, I searched their sushi menu tirelessly for a specialty roll featuring more than one type of fish to no avail. Even their rainbow roll was a California roll. Disappointed, I ordered the sushi deluxe dinner which was 8 pieces of sushi (at random) and one tuna roll for $25. A little annoyed I didn't get any say in what type of sushi I was getting, but I find this is not uncommon, and I'm happy with the price and everything thus far, so I let it go. My date ordered a deep-fried Cali roll and the Fish Katsu, both of which were very good, and the sauce that came with the Fish Katsu was delicious. My sushi comes and when I start to eat it (using chopsticks), it begins to fall apart. The rice was not sticking to the sushi, and I ended up having to the fish / rice separately. The seaweed was not sticking together and keeping the tuna together, either. The fish tasted fresh enough and their soy sauce is so good I would probably buy a bottle of it if they sold it, but the presentation and the fact that my dish was falling apart was pretty disappointing. Finally, we both ordered dessert. I'm not a big fan of ice cream, which is almost the entirety of their dessert menu, so I ordered the "chocolate kamikaze," which is a three-level chocolate frosted chocolate cake. My boyfriend had decided on the White Goddess early on into dinner, which is a raspberry sorbet covered in a white chocolate casing. Both were delicious. Our bill was a little on the high side, but with drinks and three courses, it wasn't outrageous. The food was good, the service was better and the drinks were the best. If they could just get that sushi to stay together, and maybe widen the options on their sushi menu, I would give them five stars.

Found this place via Yelp and decided to try it. Mikimoto's is always our first choice for sushi, but we ordered the Lotus roll (Hairy Mexican equivalent) and two other rolls and calamari. Everything was great! Eric was our server and his customer service was great! 4 stars!

The chefs at this restaurant obviously care about their work as told by the intricate details they put on their dishes. Josh is the best waiter there and is extremely personable and a pleasure to work with. Although a little on the pricey side, we absolutely love coming here-- the vibe is great too!!

We have been repeat customers for a longtime and it is normally a 5 star experience but we went here tonight for my moms birthday and the food was lackluster and her drink was made incorrectly. I had a lot higher expectations for a meal that costs almost $200 after tip.

I have always been a fan of Kooma in West Chester, PA (even though this one has gone down hill a bit), so I figured this place would be equivalent. It is not! I am not sure why. This atmosphere is neat and it seems like it is set up for a night club at night. The sushi is never as fresh as the place in West Chester and it is a bit on the pricey side compared to other places for sushi in Wilmington.

Got salmon teriyaki. Asked for it to be cooked medium. It came out seared, as in rare on the inside. I asked the waiter to take it back and Cooke it a little more. He was polite in taking it back but it then came out totally burned on both sides. At that point I gave up. The salmon also had some scale. The cooking and preparation of food is lacking here.

*sigh* it is just not like it use to be. *sign again*. The service is still stellar with the wait staff being super friendly and genuinely kind. The rolls are just OK. Changes in the menu over the years has led to many rolls being jam packed with spicy mayo. Lots of spicy mayo. Where this use to be my favorite place to go to for martinis, this has also slipped. Not for their lack of trying...but they are trying TOO HARD. The last 3 martinis I have gotten (the last one as recent as 02/13/14) are so heavy handed with the alcohol that it is not an enjoyable treat. We will be back in the summer months to try again with high hopes of a great comeback for this sushi place.

Love this restaurant. Perfect bar for locals who need a relaxing regular spot with consistent, tasty food and excellent service. Drinks are great, happy hour specials are unbeatable. Half priced wine on Tuesdays, nuff said. Sushi is fresh and delicious. Recommend to anyone who loves Asian fusion.

Get their cooked dishes. I got the Kooma noodles and my friend the bibimbop and we loved our entrees! Neither were strictly Japanese or strictly authentic but the flavors were good! Portions were nice and big. Stay away from the sushi rolls especially the specialty ones as it cost you the same as the an entree but the rolls are tiny (only 6 pieces)! They'll be gone in like a second and you would still be hungry. There's better sushi in Delaware. Try Bamboo House for that. The waiter was friendly and helpful and the decor was nice. Only wish there was a better non-alcoholic drink selection (bubble tea or thai iced tea or chilled jasmine green tea?). I didn't try cocktails maybe next time I will. I will definitely be back to try more entrees!

I love the rolls! The staff is friendly and the bar tenders great. If you like sushi you should visit kooma. Half price original rolls on Mondays as long as it is not a holiday.

My family and i loved the West Chester location so we wanted to try this location. It was more laid back here. The food was delicious just like the other location. Our server was excellent. She was attentive and very sweet. The happy hour specials were good with 30% off appetizers. We were able to majority fill up from the appetizers. We still order our entrees. My stepdaughter is very picky but she loved the spicy chicken lettuce wraps and the hibachi chicken. My brother in law is huge on general tso chicken but he did nit like it here. He eats everything but he did not finish this dish. This was the disappointment we had. Our overall experience was great. Needless to say, we will be back.

Staff is super nice so I feel bad giving this a two but the food just wasn't good. My friend got the Salmon teriyaki and asked for the salmon to be cooked medium rare. When the food came and she cut into the salmon it looked like seared salmon. Looked pretty rare so she asked the waiter. He apologized and took it back. When he brought back the salmon it looked burnt. I got the pad thai and it tasted sugary. I think if it was just a little less sticky it might have been OK. The shrimp and chicken were overcooked as well. Salmon teriyaki was 22 and my pad Thai was 15. Not worth the money. I wouldn't recommend this place. There are other restaurants by the riverfront that are way better. If you want Asian fusion food like this place I'd recommend mikimoto which is in downtown Wilmington as well.

Good is always great here with great ranges. Service was very nice, but several dishes took entirely to come out unfortunately. Thankfully they at least gave us some free drinks and appetizers. Overall always s great experience here.

I absolutely love this place! They have a giant menu with reasonably priced items and great specials. Try the buy one get one free roll on Monday nights when you buy a drink with dinner. Their rolls are fresh and sushi chefs are definitely great conversationalists. We were from out of town and they even helped us find Hotspots in the area to visit. By far an amazing job.

Not sure why this place has negative reviews here. The general opinion of those I've known to have tried Kooma has been glowingly positive. There must be some general misconception that Kooma is a Japanese reataurant--it's more Asian fusion with a strong lean toward Korean cuisine. Here's my take after a recent visit. PROS: eclectic Asian dishes, nice chic ambiance, great drink selection. CONS: cold plates, somewhat pricey, bit too dark. The food: excellent selection of interpretations of eastern Asian cuisine. It's different and generally well executed in taste and presentation. I suppose not every dish's origin is obvious; maybe it's worth noting it on the menu. But food temperatures were a bit cold because they seemed to not have discovered plate warmers. Food needs to arrive hot unless it's meant to be cold. Good news is that if you order bibimbap in a hot stone pot, it is outstanding. The sushi/sashimi is nicely prepared, especially if you can find it in you to venture past your basics and into speciality rolls. Ambiance: beautifully decorated with soothing contemporary colored lighting that seems more like a chic club or lounge than a restaurant. Very elegant. The downside is that you can't really see the nicely presented dishes in front of you. It undermines the food experience. Not to mention, of course, it's difficult to read the excellent selection on their menu. Overall an excellent and promising restaurant that I will regularly visit, and far superior to the blackhole that is Wilmington's fine dining scene.

Had dinner and drinks at Kooma during a random road trip to Delaware. Made a couple of wrong turns throughout Wilmington and stayed in Newark. After lots of research on restaurants/lounges in Wilmington, we ended up at Kooma. great Decor and nice atmosphere although you can see certain areas where they skimped on $$ with the decor Martini list was long enough. I had the Water Ice Martini and my boyfriend had the Dirtee Dirtee. Two drinks each and we definitely felt the effects I had the Spicy Kooma Noodles which were good...nothing spectacular and my boyfriend ordered a couple of different rolls. He raved about his rolls HOWEVER...we waited an HOUR for his rolls. They brought my food out first and apologized for the wait and provided him with a free Miso Soup. There was a conference going on in a back room which took precedence over our meal. Instead of warning us prior to ordering, they brought out my food and THEN let us know there would be a wait. After i finished my meal and he still had not received his, the waiter explained they would offer us free dessert as well. The free dessert was some type of ice cream in a gelatinous shell which was OK but not what i would've ordered had i been given an option. Overall, with the lack of trendy places in the area, this place is worth a visit. I hope my issue doesn't happen frequently and maybe next time instead of offering me soup I don't really want or a dessert I would never order, take something off my bill for my boyfriend's hour long wait (that's an hour AFTER i received my meal)

Nestled in the shadowy financial complex, Kooma feels a bit like a psychiatric ward turned into a disco - the high vaulted ceilings, the white, sterile everything with cycling lights around the sushi bar. Being far from any semblance (and no, Mikimotos doesn't count) of genuine Asian inspiration, Kooma was refreshingly adequate. My brief recommendations: the Wilmington Roll was surprisingly good, the Almond Beef was dry and tough, bibiambap was redeeming; order from the vodka-heavy cocktail list, and skip the house sake.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! My friends and I hang out here often. They have great sushi and AMAZING drinks. They are a little pricey but you get what you pay for. The building looks like an abandoned warehouse was slightly transformed. They take up some of the tables and chairs to give you a bit of a "dance floor" late night. The DJs are usually playing something you dont want to dance to but, hey, at least they are accomodating. Oh and they have one VERY bitchy female bartender. I avoid her each time I visit so as to not ruin my sushi eating, booze drinking, good time! Otherwise, the other bartenders and servers are great!

My boyfriend and I went here and really enjoyed ourselves. The only complaint we had is that it took quite awhile to get our food. We split 3 sushi rolls and an appetizer. The sushi wasn't the best I ever had but it was fresh and they had a lot to choose from. This is a perfect place for a date night before heading to the movies. The decor is a little cheesy (ex: Christmas lights) but it doesn't take away from the friendly service and food.

I've eaten sushi in 2 Countries and half a dozen states. Best sushi you're gonna get in Delaware. End of story. Don't bother with Mikimotos. Overpriced and undergood. This place has a greaet vibe, amazing service, good sushi, at a good price.

Horrible loud music ruined my dinner. It wasn't even GOOD music, it was awful heavy metal sounding crap at TOP volume. I don't know what they are thinking...it's supposed to be a sleek, trendy place - they should have some "chill" music. I could hardly hear my dining partner speak. Waiter was OVERLY attentive, nervous, and annoyed the hell out of me. Sushi mediocre. Never going back.

Been to Kooma a few times for HH which was decent, pretty good specials on food and drinks. the rolls they offer are similar to Mikimotos ( less than 5 miles away ) but the atmosphere is a lot more chill here . Was here friday night for drinks and dancing my first time ( thats why im writing the review) crowd was ok some people were wearing sneakers which is kind of a turn off for me . But maybe Kooma should establish a dress code. Very loungey feel and the DJ was good mostly hip hop and R&B but he did spin in a couple songs i havent heard in a while. drink specials ok Ciroc on special which almost never happens .. all and all a good night. Its a little far for me but def worth checking out once in a while.

This is such a good place to have a party and be a nightclub but the downfall is the location. I mean this place could be an happening spot. The sushi is great and the drinks are good too. My friend thinks the drinks are on the pricey side but what the hell do I know, I'm from new york. The Dj plays different types of music, some I haven't heard since the early 90's. Wilmington needs to wake up to the nightlife in its area, I see great potential here.

My friends are going to kill me for this review. I don't like Kooma. I've tried it thrice. Each time, I've been disappointed. It's near my work and my friends really like it. The first time I went there, lunch took an hour and forty minutes because they couldn't find a manager to fix our check. The second time the place smelled so bad of foul fish when you walked in, I couldn't recover. This last trip today, had a similar smell, but less pungent. The Kooma noodle dish had the consistency of worms but had a nice taste. A compliment on Kooma is that their servers are enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

I know I have a sushi problem, I know this. I tend to slip into an altered state, much like that of an alligator getting its belly rubbed, when I have even "good" sushi.... BUT I'm serious when I say Kooma is currently my favorite place to get sushi in Wilmington. I have been here several times and the quality is top notch, the portions are stupefyingly large and the variety of special rolls tickles my fancy like no other. I am a big advocate of Salmon. As a matter of fact, if the Salmon industry had a political action group to promote it's consumption I would be the chairman. White tuna is a close second but I digress, we're really here to talk about Kooma and I'm getting distracted with thoughts of eating sushi. Although I eat sushi 99.9% of the time I go there I have had 1 or 2 cooked dishes, one being the Pad Thai and it was excellent. Ok back to sushi... the last time I was here I had a Sakura roll with some custom touches (I dub this as my namesake privately). I replaced the salmon in the middle with white tuna, kept the spicy mayo and added roe on top as garnish. Ohhhh mamma! It is a tasty carnival of unparalleled flavor sensations! Enjoying this makes me question why they even bothered to invent the oven. I also love to have a few selections of individual sushi pieces for dessert such as: Salmon, Eel, White Tuna, Striped Bass and, if I'm feeling like having money left in my bank account is overrated, the occasional Fatty Tuna. Again, all of these are nice thick cuts with just the right amount of marbleization. For appetizers the edamame and seaweed salad are an easy choice, but then again those are kinda hard to mess up. As for drinks, I usually limit myself to a beer or even just water however the Martinis here are distractingly good (great names too: Sexual Chocolate! "They play so fine, don't you agree"). They are especially delicious on Wednesdays when they are 30% off and the French Whore is a tasty siren that keeps me coming back. The wait staff is pretty good also, very personable and the knowledgeable bartenders are a bonus. I will say that one time probably a year ago we had a waiter who was so overzealous and overly attentive it was distracting to anyone having a conversation... almost to the point as if he was being sarcastic. I dunno, maybe overly cheery go-getters skeeve me out but I think we can all agree that Kooma is no Chotchkie's either. Now you may be asking yourself "with such overwhelming accolades, why only 4 stars??" Well, I gotta be honest... when it comes down to being a regular and also considering tossing aside all my other sushi options PRICE does factor in. While I maintain their sushi is the best, there are some close seconds who offer either 50% off happy hour or buy one get one free happy hour sushi. Trust me, the prices for what I get are reasonable but I don't really like the job I have all that much and the last thing I want to do is get a 2nd one just like it just to support my sushi habit. While I GREATLY appreciate and am influenced by the recent addition of 20% off specialty rolls for happy hour, I feel I must reserve my 5th star for now (I would go 4-1/2 but it won't let me do that). PLEASE go here and treat yourself to some off-the-chain sushi so they can sustain and justify doing deeper happy hour specials!!!

A small group of us went to Kooma on Friday evening to kick off Memorial Day weekend and grab a few drinks after a bachelorette party/dinner. Overall it was a chill scene. There were some groups sitting and eating, and others up dancing. We didn't order food, but the people next to us had sushi they were raving about, and the portions were large. Great music- we were dancing the entire time. Variety of old school hip hop and some newer jams. The dj had some fun mixes the entire night. The bartenders were wonderful! Seriously! They were all very friendly, and they were having a blast behind the bar. One of them was a manager; unfortunately his amazing drinks caused me to forget his name. They really helped make it an exciting time out at the bar. Although we arrived late, there were plenty of signs for their happy hour specials. If you live in the area you should check it out. If I ever make it back to the area, I will definitely make time to hit up this spot again.

Well let me tell you about Kooma. We went to this new place in Wilmington over the weekend and to be honest, I've never felt more ripped off in my life. Let me break it down for ya. Sushi: My husband had spicy tuna and I had a spicy california roll. There was so much avocado in it it was like a mouthful of mush. His was NOT the right color for quality tuna and looked to be mostly mayo as well. Skimpers! Entrees: my daughter had Yaki Udon with beef. $15. The beef was such a low quality cut that it tasted like horse meat. She couldn't even eat it. When we complained, the waitress said she was sorry but never took it off the bill. We had to ask. All she ate was the noodles, so they TOOK OFF 6 BUCKS AND MADE US PAY 9. For noodles. Seriously. My son ordered the honey chicken. $18. It was one chicken breast, cooked to taste EXACTLY like Suki Hana, that fast food Japanese place in the mall. For $18 bucks, I would expect at least 2 breasts, and I'd like it to taste a little different from something I could get in the mall! He ate it in like 30 seconds. Also, it just came with a small tossed salad, on the same plate, and a small bowl of rice. I mean that's all fine and good but again, not for $18 bucks. My husband got some other assorted sushi which was "feh" and I had the house salad, which was OK. The ginger dressing was nice. The total bill was still $80 bucks and I felt totally robbed. Never again.

Went to Kooma for the first time a few nights ago with a friend of mine. Both of us have never been here before. I've heard mixed reviews from people on Twitter about Kooma, but that never stopped me from trying a place out. I stuck to mostly basic ones sushi rolls. They were good, but nothing spectacular. The special roll we got was fair. The waitstaff was very attentive to our needs and very friendly. We sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs were very nice & friendly. Although Kooma may not be the best place for sushi, I thought it was the friendliest I've been to in a while.

Pretty tasty sushi but kind of pricey. The martinis are fun and tasty. The atmosphere is pretty cool. Wanted to try something besides Mikimotos for a change.. I'm not sure that I'll go back.

I'm sad to say I agree with the other reviewers. My mom and I had lunch at Kooma a few weeks ago. We had soup and a little sashimi and we were looking forward to coming back for dinner. I think the only thing worth getting here is the Dumpling Soup. It's quite good but it doesn't make up for everything else. For one thing, the edamame was not really right...not cooked enough, not enough salt. My chunky tuna roll was pretty good, but the West Chester Roll, one of the special rolls, was just bad. For one thing, it was warm. I don't think sushi should be refrigerator-cold, but this was warm and mushy. The roll was wrapped in tuna, and it felt like the stringy fibrous parts of the fish were wrapped around with it. The service was good, and I think this might be a decent place to go have drinks, but the food was not worth a second trip.

The ambiance and decor had me at hello. Excellent service by our waiter Eric, the sushi he suggested, the 3 Musketeers, was nothing short of exceptional though yes, a bit pricey. The saki and seaweed salad were also delicious. I would definitely recommend it and would go again. I heard they have great HH specials.

I really love Kooma's sushi. The music tends to suck, the drinks are ridiculously expensive (though the bartenders are kind) and there is barely enough lighting to see the person across from you if you happen to go at night. But damnit, the sushi is good. Spicy tuna and salmon are consistently amazing and their sushi lunch specials are really reasonably priced.

Went to dinner there on Friday night. Great location, beautifully decorated. Server was too eager to serve. was pressing and showing at our table very often even when we told him we would like to take our time. Restaurant was mostly empty and it was early in the evening. Sushi was ok at best. Presentation was very nice. My tofu dish tasted 'buttery', but didn't have much distinctive flavor beyond that. We all were looking forward to a new restaurant down town and were disappointed. TOO BAD!

I am settling in at 4 stars for Kooma. This is my favorite place to go for sushi in Wilmington and I thoroughly enjoy their martinis. Although it's a bit pricier than a few of the other local sushi joints, I think it is justified. The rolls are bigger and the fish always tastes fresh. I enjoy the decor as well. I only hold back on a fifth star because service is inconsistent.

I went back a few weeks ago to give Kooma a 2nd chance. I felt they deserved one given that my initial review was written during their first week in business at the Riverfront. I regret going back. The sushi was lack luster. Better than the first time, but lacking over all. Spicy tuna was pasty and had more mayo than a tuna sub. These were simple rolls that we ordered and they just blew it. The hot menu items were over priced, over cooked and looked far better than they tasted. I don't know what it is with this place but one thing is certain, it is purely form over substance. I expect lots of folks to flock here for the house music, trendy decor and over priced drinks. This is not the place to go for quality food. I'm done with Kooma.

I've been to Kooma a couple times now, and it always leaves me disappointed. The sushi never tastes that fresh and the service has never been very good. I've been for lunch a few times, and it never fails... my drink never gets refilled and no one comes to check on my table until after I've already eaten my food. They weren't even busy when I've been there. I've had much better experiences at Mikimotos.

I'm definitely planning to frequent this restaurant. The server was great! He was nice and attentive. He wasn't all robotic when I asked him what he would recommend, considering it was my first time. He went right into asking what I liked and then pointed out his favorite options. I went with his recommendation and tried the Wilmington roll and it was great. To me the size of the roll was bigger than most places and you could just tell it was fresh ingredients. Even though it was too early for drinks, their bar is impressive. Plus, the music was fun, they brought back a lot of old school jams that never get old. Overall, I would recommend Kooma to anyone looking to have a great dining experience.

This is one of my favorite Wilmington lunch spots. Free parking, never that busy, and great service! They have a $15 lunch special that includes three rolls and comes with soup and salad. The rolls are simple with good quality fish and are delcious. I've also tried the spicy Kooma noodle which came in a large portion and was very tasty.

Surprised at poor reviews below; generally, I give this the best sushi in Wilmington, and perhaps the state -- certainly in the echelon of Cultured Pearl in Rehoboth, Ichiban in Dover, and (perhaps) Jasmine in Wilmington. Maybe I was lucky in my three visits. Pros: * Nice variety of foods, all delicious (the one's I've tried). Korean dishes were good, and the Chirashi was tasty. The portions were a bit small. * Fresh large pieces of sushi. Granted I rarely get rolls, mostly pieces & sashimi, but their pieces have been ample in size, smooth on the tongue, fresh and well prepared. * Delicious drinks * Swanky decor & music. Cons: * Parking and seating can be tough to come by on a weekend night. Excellent alternative to the other swank sushi places around, to mix things up (and, of course, to drop some $$$0.

Great space...great service...it's not the best sushi I have EVER had, but it was good. It was fresh, and created with attention to detail. I would make it a go to place before or after the movie theater.

Just had a really great experience at this restaurant. We had about an hour to eat before our movie. I was nervous that service might be slow, but it was perfect. A host seated us right away at the sushi bar and a minute later, our server gave us menus and took our drink order. The sushi chef gave us four pieces of salmon over rice with tobiko and tempora chrunchies-gratis! When our app came out (steamed crab shumai - delicious!), I mentioned to our server that I was pleased at the timing since we had a movie to catch. He smiled and told me that they offer a 15% discount for anyone with a paid receipt to the movie theater. Lucky for us, we purchased our tickets ahead of time! The sushi was fresh and delicious and they had many other entrees that I look forward to trying. I will certainly be back (soon!)

I used to be a big fan of this place. Their sushi was good at one point but it has let me down so much that I stopped going here. I love the sweet potato roll and the last 2-3 times the sweet potato was pretty much raw. The rolls seem to get smaller and the quality of the fish isn't is great either. I suspect they've changed management as well. The martini's, however, are super tasty! I always get their "Watermelon Martini" but I've tried their cosmos and dirty martini and also very good.

Good spot in a cute little area but seemed pretty dead for a Saturday night at 9PM. The Sushi was good and the Kooma Spicy noodles not bad, kinda remind me of Drunken Thai noodles. The Server was really nice and was new to the business but helped us out through the night. The food came out separate. In other words there were 20 people in the restaurant and two sushi chefs and my noodles came out in 5 minutes and the sushi came out in 20 minutes. It was awkward finishing my meal before my fiance was even served and then watching her eat as I sat with an empty plate.

There tonight for the first time 7-17-14, and the junk behind the bar on the shelves was not an attractive site. My teen age boys keep their rooms cleaner than that. A mop bucket at the end if the bar was unsightly as well., only 9:00 pm, a little early for pre closing duties! The bartender was friendly and helpful, explaining the restaurants daily happenings! I expected more from a place downtown/river front! It was stark inside and had no personality. To faux trendy and didn't pull it off. Bartender had a great smile! To bad we won't be back, nothing felt right about this place other than the bartender.. She was nice!
