Great little place to stop at for a hot dog. They have many topping options available - we tried the New York Style Classic, Boston, and Michigan Style Chili Dogs. The toppings were very good but the hot dogs themselves were only good (I guess I am spoiled by Ted's in Buffalo). Will definitely be back here when I am in the area again.

Went there for lunch last week & I will never return. Food tasted bland & had no taste.

Fast food and great service. I got the Texas Ranger ($3.99 (Edit:compared receipt to menu, guessing everything went up 25-50 cents) - bacon, onions, bbq sauce) and onion rings ($4.50 for 8 rings). The hot dog was tasty with the grilled bun and fixings, while the onion rings were phenomenal, though they had bumped up the price from $3.99. Sodas are free refill, with fresh chopped onions, relish, and spicy whole peppers out in bowls and ofc mustard and ketchup pumps. The joint was pretty clean, a few bugs flying around though, the walls are littered with pictures of customers too. They have the destroyer challenge if you're up for that and new hot dog topping styles. I'd definitely come back if friends wanted to but other than it's a cool place to visit at least once if you want to cross it off Guy Fieri's list.

Have tried the place several times. It's appeal is that it's local - which I usually prefer. But, I just haven't been blown away on any visit. The hot dogs are good, but they sadly were nothing special. I guess if you love topping selection this is a good place, but in a 'only cheese' kind of guy. I actually prefer the hot dog from Five Guys down the street to these. They have signs up at the street promoting their milkshakes as well - so I recently made a stop just to give the shake a try. Now I admit I'm picky with shakes - but I wasn't impressed. My son didn't even drink 1/2 of his. The shakes didn't even compare to Sweet Lucy's just a block away!! My opinion. Give it a try. It's a nice place. But there are better dogs.

Why oh why did I wait so many years to try this place? I guess maybe I just don't always think "hot dog" when it comes to going out to lunch, but the other day, my daughter and I were debating where to stop for a quick bite, and we decided to give Johnnie's a try since we were right down the street. We were glad we did! I tried the All American Dog with pulled pork, BBQ and slaw - it was perfect! She tried the Texas Ranger with bacon, BBQ sauce and grilled onions and enjoyed it. We also shared some fries which were really good too - love the skin-on kind. And they were salted just right. At that point, I figured I'd better get a couple to go for my husband, so I ordered another All American Dog and the Kennett Square Dog with grilled mushrooms and onions, Swiss cheese and steak sauce. He liked them and ate both of them and then sort of complained that they were too big/too filling for him. *Eyeroll* The actual hot dogs themselves were really good - not some little jiggly bendy little whitish franks that you might find elsewhere. They were nice solid beefy dogs - yum! Of course, the second time we got in line, my daughter just had to have an ice cream - nice soft serve ice cream is hard to beat and theirs was no exception. Definitely gonna be heading back there soon. Saw some good vegetarian options on the menu that my other daughter would like, not to mention the fried oreos, funnel cake, etc. and of course all the other hot dog combos on the menu. Yep. I can see myself heading back there within the next few weeks because to me, it was that good :)

Dang these are good dogs. Take a good look at the menu because there are some great combinations. the Kobe beef dog is great and so are the deep fried oreos. My daughters had the mac and cheese and they both approved. The staff was really friendly, and this will become one of our regular stops

As for the nature of this hot dog stand it has earned 5 stars. The menu is great based in creativity and simplicity. You can't get hung up for 45 minuets trying to decided. I like the giant hot dog concept although not willing to go that gigantic today. Also the Kobe beef dog option is a must try. I had mine NJ style which is their take on the Newark style Italian dog onions peppers and potatoes damn good but no substitute for the real thing. I also had my go to dog which is chili cheese and onions on their regular beef hot dog this too was very good. The grill the inside of the buns adding a bit of a crunch and allowing it to hold up to the toppings. The outside remains soft to easily squish it into your face. I didn't get to try the fries but they looked and smelled terrific. I had the house made onion rings and they were sensation. The staff is great, quick and precise and they all seed pretty happy. The place in bright and also has a happy disposition. Remember folks it's a hot dog stand so don't expect anything more than that and you will as thrilled as I was. Oh yes this is a go to place from now on fore whenever I am working in the area.

The food is pretty good. I get the Delaware destroyer everytime I stop in. It is about what you expect when you walk in the door.

A bit pricey for a hotdog shop but it is amazing!!!!!! Anyone who visits- parents, boyfriend, friends - I take them here for a fun, informal lunch. It's so hard to choose because the choices are awesome... chili? sauerkraut? mustard? cheese? cole slaw? I can never decide. The cheese fries are a must too. But they are all amazing. I am always tempted to try their desserts but by the end of the meal I am full. They offer vegetarian options as well and it is very clean inside as well.

  • Becca J.

Glad we stopped. Great variety of hot dogs, amazing homemade chips, also has veggie options and sandwiches if not everyone in your party wants a hot dog. Perfect for kids, mine loved the corn dogs. And there are milkshakes! Fun atmosphere.

If you're in the mood for a hot dog, look no further. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and patient as we jumped around the menu and asked all sorts of questions. The dogs themselves aren't anything special, but you can top them with a crazy number of combinations. The sides, ranging from the traditional onion rings and fries up to carnival fare like fried oreos. Fun for the entire family, but the price can be a bit more than you'd expect for a generic hot dog. Oh by the way, some really great looking vegetarian options exist here too. Don't feel like you need to be a carnivore to have a meal at Johnnies. You really will have fun without trying!

Very good bad for you food :). They have healthier options but we didn't actually try them. But the staff was friendly and very accommodating.

Great place !! Friendly service. Perfect for kids and adults. Lots of choices. Mac and cheese dog for my kids and I usually get the Reuben dog with your choice of kraut or slaw. Onion rings, cheese fries, tots. All hot and cooked to order. Tasty shakes and fried Oreos are both winners for dessert.

  • Sam B.

Thought the food was delicious, they have basically a carnival offerings like corn dogs and hot dogs, onion rings and the like. Good variety and unique offerings, I especially loved the fried Oreos, they were sooo good.

We stopped here after trying to get my son's hair cut on Saturday. My husband and I met our brother in law here, who we knew would be into it. I had a veggie burger, but my husband and brother in law both had hot dogs that they said were delicious and filling. I had sweet potato fries that were not so great, but the regular fries were delicious. I would definitely go back.

I had seen this place a few times driving past on the 202 but never had a chance to stop by. But then I saw an internet add about the place and it's hot dogs and I made a special trip for a late lunch (small parking lot). There is a large number of menu items including various types of hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, and sides. But of course going to a Dog House for the first time mandates hot dogs. I went with the New York Style Classic with spicy mustard and red spicy onion sauce. The bun was grilled leaving a nice toasty interior to prevent sogginess from the onion sauce and increasing the flavor quotient. The hot dog was well cooked and a bit of crispness to it. No soggy limp dogs here. I could not tell if the dogs were grilled or fried since it was smothered in sauce. However, with the additions and the rich dog flavor I doubt any type of cooking would make much of a difference for the dog itself. Mustard was fairly standard, doubt it was custom made. The onion sauce was nice and spicy with a mild tang to it The Chicago style dog was excellent. The bun again was grilled to prevent sogginess which makes a huge difference. Mustard and relish were standard fair, suspect straight from the jar/bottle. The mix of chopped raw onions, tomatoes, and sport peppers was excellent. Ingredients were fresh and crisp. The onions had a nice bite to them and the tomatoes were firm. Sport peppers imparted just the right amount of heat. As a side note make sure you watch your bites as the sport pepper is just the right size for a big bite and then tickle the back of your throat. Pickle slice was crisp and vinegary without overpowering the other toppings. French fries were fairly standard and unimpressive. With limited gastric real estate I am not sure I will waste the space for fried again. Overall the dogs were excellent and the toppings fresh. This is my new favorite hot dog place to eat. Just be warned there is a small parking lot and limited seating.

My second time here. I don't remember my first time so I ordered a Michigan Coney dog which has mustard chili and onions. Also the New Yorker, which is just mustard and sauerkraut. Good hotdog, steamed bun. My only criticism is the price of plain dog is $2.75! The average dog with toppings is four dollars! Figure on a $10 bill for lunch.

The Texas Tommy knocked my socks off with effortless flair, crispy bacon and gooey cheese. So delicious!! And their fries were fabulous!!!

  • Cynthia W.

Delicious and creative dogs, meaty flavorful chili, and reasonable prices. We went there for the first time tonight with a craving for hot dogs. This place hit the spot! I had the Jumbo Texas Tommy with a side of chili. Loved everything about it! Plus we got to meet the owner. He was a fun and friendly guy. He even took our picture with our enormous dogs: )

Johnnie's screams American and I'm feeling quite patriotic today. This is a great place to grab a bite to eat and feel nostalgic. They have great vegetarian options unlike many sandwich/fast food places. I love their veggie dog and homemade chips. Mmm.

I was in the mood for hot dogs so I decided to stop by Johnnies for lunch. I've been to Johnnies many times, but that was all before I was a Yelper. Johnnies sells a variety of hot dogs with the toppings based on iconic foods of cities or states that the hot dog is named after. For example, the Philly dog comes with grilled onions and cheese - a play on a cheese steak. There are so many choices and I'm always overwhelmed with making a decision. My favorite is the Chicago dog. The toppings that come with the Chicago dog are: mustard, relish, onions, tomato, peppers, dill pickle and celery salt. Johnnies also sells a veggie hot dog. Oh yeah, their fries are excellent! They sorta remind me of Thrasher's French fries that are sold at beaches on the Delmarva peninsula. The service at Johnnies is always great! If your in the mood for a hot dog, with a variety of choices, try Johnnies! I think you will not be disappointed.

  • D F.

Their deal is a basic hot dog and bun with any number of different topping combinations. No fancy dogs or speciality sausages, just plain hot dogs served two dozen different ways. As someone else said, this place basically serves up a tasty version of carnival food in a nice, clean, fun atmosphere. Onion rings and sides are delicious (though expensive--a hot dog, drink, and side will run you nearly $10 for one person). Definitely a fun place, despite the generic meat.

I was looking for a quick bite to eat before a concert at World Cafe Live at the Queen and saw that this had pretty good reviews on Yelp... so of course I had to swing by and try it! :) The building, from the outside, looked a little bit sketchy--it wasn't exactly run down but it wasn't exactly nice looking either. The parking lot was a little small too. But I was still determined to check it out and went inside. Once you adjust to the retina-burning orange-painted wall, you'll find a small seating area and a place to order your food. There was a pretty extensive menu with lot of different hotdogs, many of them named after different locations (I have to say though, as a Baltimore native, I have NO idea why the Baltimore Dog is a hotdog topped with coleslaw and bacon). We chose to try a corn dog, Chicago Dog, and Texas Tommy. We also ordered French Fries. All the items were pretty good. The Chicago Dog was topped with relish, mustard, a pickle, tomatos, sport peppers, and celery salt. While the ingredients and toppings seem to be similar to an actual Chicago hot dog, I have no idea how it compares to a real Chicago dog. Regardless, this was pretty good :) Texas Tommy was good, but it was pretty heavy. Not sure if I'd pick that again next time. The fries weren't exactly the best ones I've had, but they were good enough. If you care to spice up your fries, they also have old bay and malt vinegar near the condiments. Prices were very reasonable and the food was good. The employees were very kind too. I'd swing by again if I were in the area.

Most basic, simple, generic hot dog from a so called "specialty" shop ive ever had. In the lehigh valley, pennsylvania, they have Yocco's and Potts's, and THOSE are examples of what hot dog shops should be. This place takes regular buns, regular hot dogs, generic chili and nacho cheese....blah. I can only speak on the hot dogs but it was bad. People who think its good must never of had a real good hot dog

This place is...AWESOME!!! I haven't been here in a few months, but I used to frequent this place on a regular basis when I worked on 202. All of their food is great, the atmosphere is great, the owner is great (and is always there)...I'd eat here every day if my wife would let me! PS: They have Coke in glass bottles...epic!

Sometimes you just want a hot dog, and places that specialize in them are always the best bet. In NY it's got to be Ted's. In Wilmington, it's got to be Johnny's Dog House. Great service, small but very clean, with a nice variety of dogs and sausages, as well as other sandwiches and interesting sweets (deep fried oreo? wow...) I like the music they play over the speakers, too.

  • Jay N.

Sits along Wilmington's busy 202/Concord Pike, Johnnies has a great variety of REAL dogs. Juicy, slow grilled beef franks, mmmmmm, and on the buns you remember, not some fancy, try-too-hard "gourmet" hotdog bun. Varieties like the Philly dog, the Boston Back Bay Beanie Weenie, the New York Classic and my personal favorite, the Wisconsin Dog; a juicy, smokey beef frank melted REAL cheddar cheese sauce with some added onions, mustard.. C'est Bon! (That's Cajun for "DAMN it's good!") Great stop for a quick, simple dinner, a cool, casual date or bringing a group of kids. The dogs are necessarily cheap, but not expensive either. One dog seems to average about $3 but still well worth it!

  • Marisol R.

Hotdogs are gross and the process of how they are made, "DISTURBING." I was hungry and decided to have a New York style hotdog. Please do not tell anyone but I loved it. I went back weeks later with my spouse and had another one. I highly recommend this place. They have the best hot dogs ever. Two thumbs up = FIVE STARS

  • Morton F.

This restaurant is a standalone building on Concord Pike northbound. The parking area isn't huge but the restaurant doesn't have much interior seating anyway, so I think it is adequate. I thought the staff was great. However, the food was priced above average and didn't seem like anything I couldn't make myself. They were also having problems with the iced tea coming out of the dispenser watery.

  • Jim H.

This is one of the few times in my life when I was comfortable being in the doghouse. Located on the busy business area of the Concord area, I had seen Johnnies often on my morning commute. I took the opportunity of a half-day to check it out. It reminded me of 5 Guys in a lot of ways, from the decor, to the ordering style and the many articles about the place plastered to the walls. It was through these articles, that I recognized the owner, who was manning the register. He was friendly and informative, able to talk about all things, from hotdogs to real estate. He treated his patrons as friends and was sincere in his approach. Johnnies offers a special called the Deleware Destroyer which is 2 hotdogs on a hoagie roll topped with mac and cheese, saurkraut and anything else you can think of. If you order it, you can get your picture on the wall (you dont even have to finish it!) and the owner, took the time to point out the wall and tell some related anecdotes. There were some great options of Dog, different styles from different areas. I got the Texas Tommy (bacon wrapped with wiz) and the NYer ( kraut with brown mustard) . Those 2 along with fries and a drink cost about $11 (also reminiscant of 5 guys, its almost exactly what their burger fries combo costs). Its more than I want to spend on hotdogs, but Ill say 2 things in Johnnies defense. 1. My eyes were bigger than my stomach. I was hungry so I got 2 dogs and fries. 1 dog or no fries would have sufficed. I couldnt even finish the 2nd dog. 2. The product is worth it. It was as good a dog as Id had outside of home grilling. Note that I didnt get the Deleware Destroyer. It seemed too much, even in my hungered state. I was however entertained watching 2 aged hippies (who I dubbed Ben and Jerry) get smacked down by it. They started out all excited, high fiving , ready for their close up. By the time the camera came out to chronicle their trip to the wall of fame, they looked like a couple of prison newbies, owned by another kind of hotdog. So im putting Johnnies in 5 guys status. Above average fast food, meant for the occasional treat. I feel welcome to come back. There were so many topping options and areas i havent visited ( boston, chicago) as well as onion rings, mac and cheese and milkshakes. It will be awhile till Johnnies is boring to me. Maybe someday Ill see just how bad to the bone I am and try that Destroyer. I havent been owned in awhile.

Decent dogs at a good price. Probably the best you can get the area. Only place I know of locally that serves a *real* Chicago dog with sport peppers. Service is always fast and friendly.

The one thing of love most about Johnnies Dog House is the warm welcoming atmosphere. You always feel welcome there no matter how busy it might be. Oh yeah, the Dogs are pretty darn delicious also. They have a ton of options which is great. My kids can get a plain dog which they love, my unadventurous wife can get hers just the way she likes it, and I have a huge menu of options to taste my way through. Besides the dogs, they also have some great fries. And don't forget the deep fried Oreos that are hand dipped and fried to order! If its your first time I recommend the Texas Tommy. Bacon wrapped and deep fried. Heaven on a bun,

  • Andy L.

Johnie's has to be a very close tie for the best hot dog in the area. I tend to stick with a chili dog, which is great. It's a simple pleasure but I have never been disappointed. When I'm in the mood for a bit more, I go for the Texas Tommy. It's a hot dog wrapped with bacon, then I add chili. If you find something better in this world, marry it! They also have deep fried oreos and brownies, these are great too. I have never eaten more than 2 of them, because it's just a little much, but share with your friend and you are fine. What, you don't have a friend you say? Well if you offer a stranger a deep fried brownie, you have just made a friend! Someone mentioned that parking is a problem, well that can be true, but I sort of like the feel of the small place and more personal setting. Most times I barely have time to fill my pepsi and get some catsup before my dog is ready so if you were looking for slow service, try McDonalds on Philly pike. Look stop reading, and just go get a hot dog. You know you want to.

Excellent place. Good prices, the owner is super friendly and a wonderful guy, and lots of yummy choices. Good shakes, original creations, the DE Destroyer is a serious undertaking but well worth the effort. Parking isnt easy, but this place is great if you feel like a dog or a quick, casual bite. Well done!

Great dogs and handcut fries, but the milkshakes are the star of this place. Service is fast, and there are a lot of choices. I usually go for two of the smaller regular dogs with yellow mustard.

Several varieties of hot dogs (beef, turkey, veggie) as well as variations on the theme (anything from the usual specialty hot dogs to more unusual combinations.) The beef dogs have a distinctive taste (reminds me of Nathan's) and are always very good and fresh. I like the Tijuana Dog (Jalapeno Peppers, Sport Peppers, Chopped Onions with Mouth Burning HOT sauces) which is pretty darn hot, and I LOVE spicy foods. They also have corndogs (the real deal). Kid friendly place, pretty reasonable prices. My only complaint would be the owner/staff sometimes try a little too hard to give good customer service and hover around you as you eat. Trust me, it's not necessary and I'm just there for a hot dog - not a gourmet dining experience/meal.

  • Ian C.

All kinds of dogs and all of the toppings you wish you could have at home but are far too lazy to make. The chili cheese dogs are great. I also require chopped onions for my dogs and of course they've got em'. They also have great fries. The only downside is the physical restaurant's space is limited and when it gets crowded seating can be hard to come by.

  • Greg B.

One of the worst hot dog joints I've ate at. I'm convinced people like this place due to the gimmick of toppings. I give it two stars not for the food but because the staff are great and friendly! One star for them and 1 for the hot dog. I believe the Dog House and Deerhead have it all over this place. Johnnies hot dogs have no taste to me!

I was looking for a place to eat while driving out of Wilmington today.... I actually had my mind set on having tacos for lunch.... That was until I spotted this place.. I was polite enough to put my turn signal on, while swerving out of the second lane infront of a car next to me.... I should have just gone with the plain ole dog..... But nOOoooo.... I had to have the Chicago Dog.... The dog itself was good... But it didn't have the pickle spear. Instead, they put on relish... way too much relish... And there was no poppy seed roll... Just a local Strohman's roll... I could have made this at home to be quite honest... But what they did, they did well... I just think that if you're gonna specialize in and advertise one thing, you ought to perfect it.... ok, enough of the Chicago Dog.... On to the Texas Ranger Dog.... Now this was actually pretty damn good, considering that I made an impulse order...It had grilled onions, bbq sauce, and a mountain of crumbled bacon on top..... I could have eaten two of these... The beef hot dogs that they use is a pretty good quality hot dog... Reminds me of Kosher's Best brand... But the best thing that I had from there were the onion rings.... These things were huge.... also had a really good breading surrounding it.... I only ordered these because an order of fries usually can't be eaten along with the rest of the stuff... They usually get cold before I want them and have to be thrown out.... An overall good place to visit without being disappointed... Somewhat friendly service, but it was freindly in a give me your order type of way.... A small counter area... Very clean and the service is fast... $3.50 for a specialty dog is about the norm.... They have a board with daily specials on it. Maybe enough parking for 8 cars.... I'd definitely go back again, although I'd leave the authentic expectations in the car while I'm ordering...

Awesome. I was in Wilmington for the day, and I found this place was close to my hotel. I read the reviews and decided I had to go. I had the Texas Tommy and sweet potato fries. The hot dog was great. How can you beat a hot dog wrapped in bacon and deep fried?? If I find myself in Wilmington again, I will go back.

Once in a while, I get a hankering for a good hot dog. I have always wanted to give Johnnies Dog House a try. I stopped in the other day and had a pair of dogs - - NY Style with spicy brown mustard and spicy onions. One word -- FUGGETABOUDIT!!! Can't wait to go back.

These hot dogs are so good! I tend to be a hot dog purist, so I have not experimented with any of the fancy hot dog options for fear that cole slaw will obliterate the hot doggy goodness. But those options are there, if you are interested. This hot dog can definitely stand alone though. The service is friendly as well. If you have $2.50 lying around and you are hungry, go get a hot dog!

I love hotdogs and these hotdogs were awesome. My friend and I love going to places and trying their hotdogs because we are weiner fiends. I got the Seattle dog (it came with cream cheese and "fried onions" which were more like grilled diced onions but whatever I guess I was expecting something more like onion straws or onions with breading) and put spicy mustard on it. I could have eaten 3 or 4 of those and they aren't small. My friend had the Texas dog and that was really good too. I think it had chili and bacon and cheese and onions and jalapenos and I think that's it. Aside from the normal menu there's a daily board with 4 or 5 more dogs on it. And yeah you might go for the strange toppings but the hotdog itself is very good. Plus I think it's convenient to get to and the service was quick and friendly.

I'm definitely a fan of this place and I'm not even into hot dogs that much. Not only are their hot dogs awesome, but their burgers and shakes are even better. I didn't give Johnnies 5 stars only because they don't have mushrooms. They have fried onions, but no fried mushrooms. What kind of place does that?

Simply one of the best dogs I have ever had. Need I say more? Okay I will. They have a great selection of dogs and toppings as well as Mexican Coke, yes the kind with real sugar not HFCS. Well worth a stop just for the soda but then comes the dogs Oh the dogs and how good they are. Perfectly cooked and paired with delicious toppings with for a hot dog purist like me (mustard and pickles only usually) is saying something. This place is not gourmet but hot dogs french fries and soda make a great snack and this place does all of that perfectly. I only wish I lived closer.

I ordered two hot dogs from the menu. I know as a franchise, there must be formulae for preparing the items. The Texas Tommy was like none I had ever had before from an ingredients stand point, but they skimped on the ingredients except for cheese which was slopped all over not just on the dog but the bun and the container. The other hot dog had sauerkraut and mustard. The mustard was excessive and the sauerkraut was allover the bun and the container and the whole mess was soggy to the point of being wet. They need to supervise the person preparing so that they stick to the formulae.

I hate to give any place one star, but when I almost gag getting my meal down, that's one star to me. I stopped at Johnnies for a quick lunch. Parking was a problem, but it was lunch time and the lot is small, I'm sure it's better in the off hours. I had the NY style dog, sauerkraut and brown mustard, fries and an iced tea. My tea was good, but could have used more ice. It's called iced for a reason. The fries were crispy and I'm a crispy kind of girl. Ok, now the reason for my one star rating. Imagine that someone takes your hotdog bun and soaks it in water, then they wring it out and slide a tasty dog in that mushy glob of glop. Major gag factor! I ended up scraping that nasty, wet stuff off the hot dog and ate it without a bun. I'd gladly give them a 3 star rating if they could give me a roll that didn't double as a sponge.

When Johnnies Dog House opened up in our neighborhood, we thought we'd check it out. Our first visit was good. I had the fried fish sandwich, and my husband had a dog. Since then, the quality of the food has gotten worse. I feel for the owner because I imagine it's a tough job, but having high quality ingredients is key. I have gotten the fried fish sandwich on two other occasions. The last time, I only ate a few bites because it was that gross. My husband's dog was mediocre as well. When I want a hot dog these days, I buy Nathan's at the store and pop them on the grill for a much better effect. I hope Johnnies improves their quality, and if they do we'd be happy to go back.
