A great "meat & potatoes" / beer bar in Wilmington. Very good beer selection (several beers on tap, but many bottle selections). Food is tasty also. The soft pretzels app is a favorite. Includes Guinness mustard and a chipotle cheese sauce. Chicken Nixon sandwich is always a favorite. Very knowledgeable bar staff. Good specials also: BOGO free entrees on Wed nights, $5 sandwiches (11-5) and $3 Dogfish Head beers (6-close) on Thursdays. Just pay attention to your bill. Twice we got specials and the bartender forgot to give us the discounts.

Another successful recommendation from yelp. My wife and I had a good time with good food and beer. Only negative was the roll on my very good pulled pork sandwich. My wife's salmon was excellent. We both had salads that where very good as well.

I have only visited the Dead Presidents for lunch, so I cannot comment on dinner. The food is generally good, and service is usually fast and friendly. Food tends to be a step above typical bar fare. On occasion, service has been a little slow despite this place being quiet at lunch time. Booth seating makes this a nice place to go for a quiet, private lunch.

Ahh, the place where I began hone my craft as a drinker! Great decor, menu, and overall atmosphere. If you're lookjng for a bar with some character - this is the place. Probably my go-to place for a late night menu.

I've been here twice so far and will go back. Great atmosphere, food, and beer selections. Recommend the Fish Tacos, soft pretzel, and any of the Sunday brunch specials. Disagree with Nicole G.'s comment about service. Our waitresses have been great.

Outstanding food and service, the server was gracious and cracked humorous jokes. Food was wonderful also.

RJ and I stopped here for brunch on July 19th because it's one of our favorites, but unfortunately brunch was over. So I ordered the French Dip, and I have a pic of what RJ ordered but I forget what it was. Mine was a little dry, even with the gravy and RJ said his was ok. But it was nowhere near as good as brunch usually is.

Spacey. Good for groups. Food is simple but consistent. A better craft beer selection would be a plus.

I went on a very slow Wednesday afternoon as my co worker and I were passing through from PA to NC. Food: Our food was very good. The menu was full of interesting combinations. I had a jerk infused pork burger and onion rings. Both were VERY good and I am super picky about my onion rings. I wish my meal had come with more than 4 of them though, especially since I paid extra for the substitution. Service: Service was a little slow. The dining/bar area was ran by one man and there were about 5 people at the bar and only us at a booth in dining area. He was not busy most of the time but seemed to forget to keep check up on us. With only 7 people in a place, I expect better service. Price: My meal was $12.75 including a soda minus tip. I enjoyed it and would return if in the area. On a more exciting night, I bet this place would be fun to come with friends as the atmosphere was young and music was good.

I loved this place... sometimes I am so confused how patrons of the same establishment can have such varied opinions :-(.. our service was pleasant and efficient. .. the brunch including the Mimosa was supberb..the old pub atmosphere award winning.. get the Bridgeville. .guilty pleasure. .delicious french toast sandwich with scrapple and scrambled eggs... what a beauteous experience. .. mimosas and yummy brunch..can't wait to return!

Went for brunch today with a friend. Got the Bridgeville, kind of like a Monte Cristo but with scrapple, scrambled eggs and cheddar jack cheese, yum! Also came with home fries which were good too. My friend got a waffle with bacon. She said her food was good but the waffle was a bit overcooked. We both enjoyed our mimosas!

Half price burgers... ummm yes please!!! DE was a midpoint for my travels home and was dying for some pub food. Their 50/50 wings are awesome! Thai chili sauce mixed with hot sauce. I tried The bbq burger and my fiance had the jerk infused pork. Both were wicked good. I wish I had a place like this near home.

The jerk wings are must doesn't look like much from the outside but inside its a nice restaurant /bar.

Dead Presidents is definitely a favorite spot for me. I do feel the need to say that they have greatly improved their beer selection since my 2010 review. The food and service are usually solid. They have excellent brunch on Sundays, although it's often crowded. And they have half priced sandwiches for lunch on Thursdays, which are delicious. I am a big fan of the office chairs at the bar, but you have to be there at the right time to claim those as they are popular and there are only 3 or 4 of them.

Bar is sticky and nasty the bartenders never wipe it down!!!! the finish on the bar is gone very dirty place hate to see the kitchen needs some renovating

This place is phenomenal. While on a business trip to the Diamond State, I thought that there was nothing but chain restaurants in the entire state. But then while I was sitting in my hotel in Newark I went on yelp and to see if there was any place worth eating. I saw a few, but this place kind of stood out (mostly because it was an ad listing). I'm glad that I clicked on it. Located down the highway in the city of Wilmington, I was there in 15 minutes. It didn't look like much, but they had private parking lot and beer so I was in. I was told to sit anywhere, by the friendly waitress. She said she would be right with me and was.I was promptly handed a menu and told about the $3 beer specials (Victory Prima, and. some others). I opened the menu and knew exactly what I wanted. Filet mignon stuffed with Boursin and while I was waiting chicken corn chowder in a bread bowl. It was good. Finally when my meal came I was extremely surprised. The fillet was cooked perfectly. It was very rich and delicious. The broccoli that came with it was fresh, and the mashed potatoes were home made and creamy. 5 stars all the way. My only regret was the soup, not because of the taste or anything, it was way too much food! Completely worth it. Next time I am down here I will definitely be making a side trip (or driving 2 hours for dinner its that good!)

This place has gone down hill. Bartenders are very rude. We were given a bill and then it was taken away and the amount changed by 6 dollars. When we questioned the bartender we were yelled at. I'm okay with 6 dollars just asked why? Manger came over and told us to quiet down. We weren't the ones yelling your employee was... Customer service is really lacking. The current owners have taken what was once a great neighborhood bar and thrown it down the drain. We used to be regulars will not be coming back.

Great beer selection. Yummy nachos. Awesome service. And free parking!

What a surprise. The surrounding neighborhood is eclectic and the bar is delightful. There is even a parking lot so you don't have to fight for on street parking, which is almost impossible to find. The beer selection would challenge even a beer aficionado and they even have more than one cider. When we arrived we were able to sit where we wanted and when the bar waiter came to get our drinks he informed us that they were having half price hamburgers so we indulged in three excellent burgers and a selection of beers and ciders. We also had an appetizer so we were fully satisfied when we left. Oh, and the atmosphere is typically dead president style. Great place for a casual meal with friends or for a party or for a romantic dinner. They also have a number of TVs showing sports if that is your thing. If you are visiting take time to hit this place and have a blast.

Went for lunch on a Tuesday, wasn't busy, had a the crab bisque soup, shrimp po boy, a friend had oyster po'boy, and iced tea. The bisque was good, the sandwiches were good, iced tea a little bland. The waitress worked hard but she was the only one working - and she was nice, apologized for the wait, but she should have had help....so it was slow, they must have only had 1 cook. Took 45 min to get our food. 1.5 hrs for lunch. Don't go if you want something fast. Lots of restrictions on using groupon too.

I kind of enjoy this place as a middle stop on a bar crawl but honestly I tend to find it way too loud to have a conversation in and sadly the on tap list is usually pretty boring for me but at least there are plenty of craft beer options but if you have an experienced palette at all you're going to end up on the bottle list. Food is decent and well priced but did I mention how loud it is. It is loud.

Hands down the worst service I've ever received in a restaurant. I went with a group of friends and we waited over an hour for our food. One of our party was never even served!! We couldn't even find the manager to complain. For the very average food they serve, there's no way I'm ever going back - even if it is right down the street.

  • Andrew R.

Yuck Yuck Yuck. Waited 45 minutes for a craptastic sandwich and wilted broccoli. Something must be up with the water line because the soda was awful so I sent it back and asked for water and that was revolting too. Thoroughly gross.

  • Alec R.

I'm generally not picky about this sort of thing. But Dead Presidents has absolutely the worst service I've ever had in a restaurant. The whole staff. And the food is not much better. Avoid. You won't be able to get served anyway.

THE go-to place ANYTIME in Wilmington. Avoid the 'cool' kid crowds from Trolley, don't empty your wallet into the Riverfront, and don't get a DUI by driving to Newark. If you want to stay in the city and enjoy a classic, "Cheers-like" pub- Dead Prez is the place to be. This place is classic but that doesn't mean it gets stale. After coming under new ownership in Dec. '09, they've already changed up the menu a little while still keeping the classics. And by classics, I mean the Chicken Nixon. A cajun-blackened chicken breast served on a kaiser roll topped with cheddar, BBQ sauce, and what makes everything delicious? BACON. It's what helped Dead Prez earn a spot on Esquire's 50 Best Bars in America. Also the Sunday brunch is perfect, plus some of the best Bloodys around. Oh, it's a bar right? Sooo, yeah they keep up on their brews and booze too. Changing their beers on tap depending on the time of year. There's also a good selection of craft brews including some from Brooklyn Brewing, Bear Republic Brewing Co., and since it's Delaware- quite a bit of Dogfish Head including their specialty large bottles of beer. But do not fret, they also have all the typical beers in case you're not a fan of the crafts. The environment seems to have an amazing balance. There's TV's that seem to always have a game on but it's absolutely NOT a sports bar. The conversation is constant even between strangers. Plus the jukebox never seems to play a bad jam. So if you can't tell, it's my favorite place around, I can't say a bad thing about the place, and no.... I don't work there and I'm not getting paid for this review.... hmm, maybe I should.

Service sucked: waitress had no personality and never smiled. We waited 30-40 for our food order to be taken. Atmosphere was good, lots of beer, food was good....until I found the tip of a rubber glove in my mash potatoes- flipping gross. We tried to joke about it with the waitress and she was just a plain old biznatch. Good thing I was just passing through!!

Man, this is one of the times that Yelp has let me down. Saw the ratings on here and decided to go here for lunch. Got the chicken Nixon sandwich and it was very very very average. I'm talking about I can make one better at home and I don't even know how to cook. Very bland. Friend got a cheese and egg croissant and it was okay. The fries were the best part of the meal. Maybe it was an off day. The bartender served us and was a nice dude. Don't think I'll come back, but maybe I just had too high expectations of this place.

Great bar. Friendly staff. Beer selection is on point. A bit more laid back than trolley. So you can actually have a conversation without screaming over music/crowds.

Dead Presidents is probably my favorite place to go in Wilmington. Great beers, some wines, everything I've had on the menu has been good. Not earth-shatteringly good food, but perfect, high quality bar cuisine. It's never been loud or annoying. It's the kind of place to have an intelligent conversation over beer.

Went for lunch - the food is good, the waiter / bar-tender was very personable, and there is a good selection of beer. We ordered the pretzel appetizer. They were warm, freshly baked, and large in size (good for small groups). I'd give them a 4 out of 5 because they were a little too heavily salted (easy to wipe off though). My boyfriend got the buffalo chicken sandwich. The chicken was fresh and not heavily breaded like other places. He said it was fresh, not greasy, and was "real chicken." I had the greek salad with blackened mahi mahi. The salad was good and the fish was definitely fresh. We both enjoyed it and said we will return there for lunch or for dinner and drinks with friends.

READ..! For a bar it is decent, however, for the food I would NOT recommend. I ordered the salmon and my wife got the crab cakes, both from the $9 square deal menu. My salmon was over cooked and under seasoned with a simple glaze sauce for some flavor. My wife's crab cakes were awful, tasting of smelly fish (bad crab). I was in a hurry so did not complain because I just wanted to leave. The lobster bisque did taste very good but lacked even a single small piece of lobster. Over all my experience was ruined by the foul taste literally left in my mouth from the crab. I saved the receipt out of habit after I have a "questionable" meal. The only reason for 2 stars is good bisque and good service...

Went here for the Sunday Brunch and it was gooood. We started off with the soft pretzel appetizer that came with spicy mustard and smoky cheese. As you may or may not know - we eat vegetarian. One of the reasons I decided to try this place out was because I saw more than one option for us to choose from on the online menu. Always a good way to start an outing. I got the veggie breakfast burrito and my boyfriend got the veggie burger. He said his was good - I didn't get much more than that and I didn't try it because I was to FULL from INHALING my burrito. I am a breakfast burrito fanatic. I love anything that is wrapped in a tortilla, especially burritos with a tasty Sriracha sauce! My boyfriend is the beer buff in the relationship and he was happy with the selections and prices. I will trust him on this. I, on the other hand, thought their diet soda was satisfactory :) I can't really comment on the atmosphere because we were there at a time where a lot of people weren't. I did look around and saw a wall full of board games - intriguing! It is a roomy place that I could see being a lot of fun during the wee hours.

Stumbled on this while going home to Newark from Philly. Had to get off I-95. Got there for lunch on Sunday, and they were still serving breakfast. Everything that came by us looked good. Had the steak wrap, but by the time it got there i was wishing i had ordered breakfast. Scrapple is something we don't get in Florida, and i was missing it big time. Would recommend. Limited parking in the rear.

Great bar with damn good wings and beer prices. They also have a Presidents Day Party and the place is jumping on St. Patrick's Day. The loungers on the backside of the bar are the best seats in the house.

My favorite place in Wilmington, hands down. Good food with a limited menu that makes it a great place to grab a late bite to eat. The bisque soup is super tasty. The atmosphere is unlike any other. It's got that dark, wood and green feel of a small, "manly" bar. You expect John F. Kennedy or Ronald Reagan to jump off the photos that cover the walls and sit down and have a drink with you at any moment. But unlike your run of the mill dive bar, its clean and well-kept so it's appropriate for even a girl's only night out. The prices are great. And the staff is wonderful. I would recommend to anyone.

Average food, excellent bar. Not the kind of place I would go out to dinner, but OK for snacks or late night eats. The bar is great. Extensive selection of bottled craft beer, good drink specials & solid bartenders. Lively atmosphere and good crowd. One of my favorite spots in town.

Chicken Nixon, 50/50 wings, Tricky Dick's Pretzels... Enough said. Also, an excellent selection of craft beers, cheap wine nights ($10 bottles), and drink specials during the week. But the best ones? Quizzo with Dan and Geno on Tuesdays, and $3 DFH on Thursdays. Correct, Dogfish 90 for $3. Their craft beer selection is everchanging as well, and of course you can't go wrong with $3 GM shots on Mondays. Owner is always around, very friendly, and the staff is excellent. Two of the best personalities you'll ever meet work together most nights. And they just upgraded to some big ass TV's folks, because anyone thats been going there for years remembers the old big boxes in the corners! No more!

In the past, Dead President's was always a reliable spot for bar food with a twist, late night or for Sunday brunch. During my last visit , they depleted all of my patience and ability to ignore their recent trend for lackluster service and poorly executed food. On 4th of July there was one other table and two bar staff, it took nearly, ten minutes for someone to approach the table, 40 minutes for our food to arrive, we ordered what the menu describes as a full pound of wings , a small grilled shrimp salad and tex mex eggrolls. The salad was a limp excuse for a salad and even though we ordered a small they charged for a large. The wings totaled 8 small wing halves, perhaps on another planet with a different atmosphere, with no gravity, they might have weighed 1/2 a lb. There are too many other options within close proximity to waste your money at this establishment, it appears as if they are operating in a vacuum...

All right, where's your bar/pub checklist? Get ready to tick the boxes. Great beer selection at reasonable prices. The food is hot, fresh, and delicious, with a few specials every night. I highly recommend the Irish Nacho appetizer, and the lamb sliders are a good bet too! Staff is friendly, I've never had an order wrong. Sometimes a bit of a wait for service at tables, but only when it's exceptionally busy. It can get crowded, but I've rarely had trouble getting a table. Happy Hour from 4-7pm on weekdays gets you $1 off all drinks and half price appetizers. Oh, and Karl makes absolutely delicious Sex on the Beach cocktails.
