We just had a horrible Valentines dinner at Takashi because we had the most rude disagreeable inattentative waiter. I am unable to digest oils and when i asked if something had oil in it asked if that was really a ptoblem?!! It took him an extrememly long time to even take our order when there were only 3 other tables of guests. He made disgruntled noises when we asked for a new glass of water because of something floating in it. He rushed through the food description so fast and rolled his eyes when I politely asked him to please repeat it slowly. He made a comment when asked for a small bowl for the dipping sauce. He made a bad face when I asked for a fork and I asked him, " Is that a problem for you?" and he said "Yes!". He never asked ever if everything was ok or if we wanted anything or any drinks or even desert. He totally ignored us once we got our food until the bill came. The food is not that great that it would be worth suvh horrific service.

This is an excellent Japanese restaurant........ so authentic! The sushi is incredibly fresh and I loved the Takashi Collection appetizer. The spicy tuna was another favorite. The owners and servers are friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is quaint and relaxed. This is a hidden gem in uptown Sedona.

We sought out an Asian place so we could eat light. Nothing listed on Yelp, so we braved an unreviewed restaurant. We chose one slightly off the beaten path hoping for one that survives mostly from keeping the locals happy...in our tourist town, these are definitely the best places. Here are the good points about Takashi: 1) Peaceful & very pretty setting/decor; 2) friendly service; 3) overall good food. Why we gave it a 3-star: 1) Not-so-good teriyaki sauce (which impacted about half of our meal); 2) waited a bit too long for the food (but they were very apologetic); 3) pricey ($19+ for a chicken salad). Our overall conclusion was that we probably wouldn't go back...we'd probably try one of the other Asian places in town to see how they compared.

Great Food and Great Atmosphere. What more could you want. We tried several different rolls and all were excellent. It's off the main strip and not as crowded, take the time to check it out.

We just got back to our room after eating here and had the most pleasant experience. The food was delicious and very tasty, the service so friendly. We never had to ask for anything, they were so attentive. I was a little hesitant about having sushi in a small town in AZ, but goodness was I wrong. I've never been to Japan but the food seemed very authentic and was entirely fresh! I can't wait to come back to Sedona to have dinner here again. Highly recommend it to those looking for a nice quiet dinner. The place only had a couple tables filled, not a whole lot of people which was actually nice not having to make a resi or waiting an hour for a table like good sushi places in big cities.

I've never been to Japan and I don't profess to know much about it's cuisine but I do recognize tasty food prepared with fresh ingredients. I'll be the first to confess that I am not a huge fan of Japanese food. In fact, I have had very little of it in a half century plus of dining. However, Takashi Japanese Restaurant in Sedona is simply good. It's a little off the beaten path down Jordan Rd. but once you find it you'll immediately be pleased by its quaint and peaceful entry courtyard accented by a huge and old broad branch tree. Inside the restaurant, you are likely to be greeted by either Sylvia or Eric who have owned and operated Takashi for 16+ years which is an obvious testament to its quality and service. After you have been seated at one of the rustic wooden tables, you'll be greeted with an interesting brew of fresh green tea with popcorn which is delightful. If you're like me and don't know much about Japanese food you would do well to ask Sylvia or Eric to help you make your choices which is what I did. My wife and I had lunch on a Tuesday which along with Fridays are the only days it is served. Otherwise it is dinner only. The menu has a very large selection of items from ala carte to full dinners. I ordered a combination dinner - the Spicy Tuna Roll with Tempura. Sylvia also insisted on an order of Niko Maki which is tender sliced beed wrapped around fresh asparagus topped with teriyaki sauce. She also brought us some Edamame preceded by their signature miso soup. Everything was great but my personal favorites were the Niko Maki and the spicy tuna rolls. Due to large portions, I don't recommend ordering both because I could only finish half of it - there were 6 of each which is a lot of food along with the soup and appetizer. My wife had Teppan Yaki but instead of meat or shellfish requested tofu. I didn't sample her dish but she definitely liked it as well. If you're in Sedona and you don't want to typical southwestern influenced Mexican cuisine or run of the mill Italian, try Takashi. You won't be disappointed. I do have agree with a previous reviewer that this is not a rucus noisy restaurant but instead a quiet, peaceful and intimate dining establishment.

We've been coming to Takashi ever since it opened in Sedona, and it is wonderful! Their food is always fresh and tasty. The ambiance of the restaurant is calming and subtly beautiful. Don't go to this restaurant if you want a "fast food" experience. Not a good place for tired, hungry adults or kids! Go if you want a relaxing evening in nice surroundings and tasty food.

Top 10 to do things in Sedona. The food from this restaurant is the highlight of my evening. My girlfriends and I had a spider roll, a spicy tuna roll, yellow tail sashimi, salmon sashimi, and tempura ice cream. Everything was delicious!!!!! We couldn't stop smiling after the meal. This is an endorphin releasing meal!!!!

Went here while on vacation, and it was really nice to get away from some of the greasy tourist food available on the main streets in town. This place had nice fresh tasty food. The restaurant is nicely decorated, and the staff was very friendly. We were here at around 8 on a weeknight, and ended up being the last customers of the night to leave. Our waiter still paid attention to us, and was happy to chat about his favorite places in town. I had the salmon teriyaki and tempura combo (about $25), and was very happy with is. It wasn't a cheap meal, but the dinners include salad, miso soup, rice, and hot tea and I had a very generous portion of well prepared salmon. I had salmon a couple times in Sedona, and this was the only time it was worth eating. The sauce was lovely: sweet, salty, and sticky just as teriyaki should be. The tempura was crisp and both the shrimp and veggies were tasty. I also really liked the shredded carrot and cabbage 'salad' because it have a wonderful thick ginger-y dressing. My dining companion had a soup dish that she described as 'salad in soup form.' It had a variety of veggies and tofu (chicken and beef options were available) cooked in a broth and she liked it. Both of us got way more than we could eat, the portions were too big for us although neither of us generally have huge appetites. When we arrived it was fairly late and two large groups (one party of 6 and one of 8, plus there were a couple of other 2 or 3's) had arrived just a few minutes before us, and there was also only one waiter. It took a little while for us to get our food, for which the waiter apologized several times. We got miso soup (included in the dinners) and drinks pretty quickly and we weren't in a rush. Seems like they just didn't expect to have over 20 customers an hour before close on a weeknight. I doubt this place is super-speedy in general, so I'd leave a good chunk of time to eat here.

Hands down, the food here is AWESOME. We drive 2 hours from Glendale to Sedona JUST to eat here (by the way, it would be nice if they were open a little earlier - they don't open until 4pm on weekends) Some of the best Japanese food around. The sauces are all so unique & yum. The atmosphere is perfect (especially on the patio at sunset). I'm only giving 4 stars instead of 5 because we haven't always had the best service here - it's a 50/50 chance you will have good or bad service. But as for the food and the chef - I'd give 5 stars. SO good.

"Hope you have a lot of time....." by mb September 10, 2012 - Came to Sedona for a couple of days and were hungry for some good sushi. Based on the reviews we picked this place. Well, the restaurant was less than a third full and we ordered pretty simple food, a couple of rolls, some suchi, a salad and a tempura appetizer. It took them 45 minutes to serve us the order. The waitress came coming over and telling us that our order woudl be out shortly. I could not resist anymore and I asked her if the shef was a one armed sushi chef. The food finally came and it was nothing worth waiting so long for. Not bad, but nothing special either. Particularly not worth a visit if you have to waste so much time waiting for a run of the mill meal.

Beautiful restaurant off the beaten path. Gorgeous view of pillars of Red Rocks. Sushi menu is small but made to perfection. Spinach salad unbelievably good. Directions are on their web page and pay attention to the map. Go around the block to park in back. Services very friendly. Some dude previously gave this restaurant 1 star; he also said sushi rice is made with sugar. No it is not! His criticism are way off based in my opinion. It is a demure, wonderful restaurant.

This was absolutely the worst dining experience I have had. I made dinner reservations for a party of 6 ( 3 adults and 3 children, ages 5yo and twin 22mo) for 6pm. The restaurant appeared to be at most 2/3 full, there were several empty tables The waiter was at best lukewarm. When ordering our meals, he promptly scolded me to slow down. Approximately ten minutes after we ordered, the waiter told us that we may have to wait a little for our food because there was a large take out order ahead of us. We were served edamame and drinks only. By 6:45, my children were hungry and I asked when our food would be served and if we could get the children's order served. Again the waiter told us about the large ate out order ahead of us. After ten minutes or so, he brought out an order of gyoza and told us he had stolen someone else's order. The gyoza was deep fried and greasy and was not good at all. I had asked anyone in the restaurant who passed us by how long it would take for our food to come out. No one came back to provide an answer and when I did get an answer, the response was a terse "we don't know". At about 7:10.....that waiting over one hour with three small children...the waiter told us our food would take another twenty minutes! We asked for the bill as we weren't going to wait that long. We were never offered any apologies for the long wait or even given extra edamame or any kind of polite treatment. Apparently the restaurant can only handle one order at a time. And to a bad restaurant even worse, the waiter charged gratuity on the edamame, gyoza, glass of wine and one beer that was served!!! Even if I was starving and this was the only place to eat, I would choose to eat the cactus outside....I would receive better treatment!!

I dont take the time to sit down and write a review typically, but use yelp as a tool a lot. I feel I need to warn people about this one. While the service was friendly at this restaurant, the food was horrific. I cant describe the texture of my spider roll, but cat food comes to mind. My son ordered yellowfin tuna, and was told as he was served that they only had two pieces left of yellowtail and filled in with some other fish (which was not eaten, but was fully charged on the bill). The edible portions of our dinners were slightly short of fair. We should have seen the signs... I wanted to run in the first moments after sitting down. I should have followed my instincts. It was a weird experience from making a reservation on, and I regret spending a precious Sedona evening with my family as well as $150 on such a horrid dinner. I wish I wasnt so polite.

Great Japanese food. My Mom had the Sukiyaki - it took a while to make but was well wroth the wait. I had the Shrimp & Veggie Tempura - generous portion! My don had the Chicken Katsu - again, big portion. All entrees came with miso soup, salad and hot tea. It's a little pricey but that's expected. Overall, great service & we will definitely go back if we're in Sedona.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Takashi Japanese restaurant! This review is a few months delayed, but I am confident the details are still accurate. All the dishes here are superb, and I recommend coming often enough to get through the whole menu. Fried items are delicate not heavy. Before their sukiyaki, I was never an Asian noodle fan. Sauces draw out and enhance the inherent flavors of the food. Meats are tender and delicious, while veggies retain just enough snap. Excellent miso is included with entrees. Try the ikapon - it is incredible. They keep a good selection of very fresh sushi. Although, since it is the middle of the desert, some of their raw items may be sold out or unavailable. That's how you know it is fresh! I lived in Sedona when this restaurant opened in the nineties. Since then, I have eaten fantastic food from San Francisco to London. Holes-in-the-wall to the French Laundry. Through all those years I told friends and family about the amazing food from Takashi. I recently brought my wife and in-laws (all foodies) to Takashi, and they said they finally understood why I have spent the last fifteen years talking about this great Japanese restaurant in Northern Arizona. LOVE it!

Before you read this, this is going to be jaded. I enjoy sushi a lot and try to eat it every week. I've been to Japan and San Diego and such. Arizona sushi, not so much. First of all, its hidden. It was hard to find, and the parking was harder. There were not many people so we were seated quickly. I'm a germaphobe, so when they serve water, I watch for something. If the pitcher touches the lip of the glass or not. Because if the waiter touched your glass, he probably touched everyone else's too. Ew. It took 15 minutes for someone to take our order and 45 (I started timing about twenty minutes in) to get our food. The miso soup tasted like it was made using a quick mix. C'mon you're a Japanese restaurant, i'ts not that hard to make. Second of all, way too salty. There is one thing you should never order here - Sushi and rolls. To make sushi rice, you need rice vinegar and sugar. Didn't taste a hint of either. Just a bland patch of rice. The spicy tuna mix was OK. Every Japanese restaurant should have a signature roll that you should remember it buy. I never saw one thing that popped out. The steak teriyaki was well cooked but the teriyaki sauce was extremely buttery, if that suits your taste. They did not place the tempura out to let the excess oil drip and it had too much batter. The house salad was soggy and it was too thinly cut. The dressing was excellent though. The atmosphere was good, quiet and relaxing. Overall: C- Food: D Service: D Atmosphere: B+ Last thought- Not coming back here.

Looking for some Asian cuisine in Sedona and there weren't many options but luckily found this gem. Although it wasn't as busy as I was expecting, we sat down because we were hungry. We didn't order too much aside from sushi but mine were delicious. I had the Shrimp Tempura roll and the Spider Roll which consisted of Soft Shell Crab. Nice little gem hidden behind all the shops. Definitely a place to try if you're in the area and craving some sushi.

NO SERVICE - SO WE WALKED OUT We went here twice in January 2015 and it was good, Sylvia was running the shift/s. Went again on Sunday June 28th and eventually we walked-out as we just waited too long to be served anything. The one and only Server was busy but also had a bit of an 'attitude' when we eventually got his attention so that we could at least start with a drinks Order. He said he would be with us in a few minutes and 10 minutes later we were still waiting. All this time, the Manager / Owner was sitting at the Bar area playing on his laptop and a younger man helped clear tables from time to time. We got frustrated after waiting a long time waiting to be served, so we left. On the way out the Manager / Owner jumped-up and I told him he can't let customers wait so long and he replied with a couldn't care a less attitude. Any-way, we went to the Thai place down the road which was awesome. UPDATE, We have since been back a few times and service has improved. Sylvia (the Owner) apologized for that one bad evening and the food is always really good.

The food was okay overall. Although the rice wasn't sushi rice and the gyoza where deep fried with beef. The fish was decent. Really the most disappointing part of the dinning experience was the service. It was very clear that locals where given priority and special service. As a visitor there was very little contact and we where treated as if we where an inconvenience with no follow up. No chance to get a second beer. They just through the check on the table without even asking if we wanted desert. As we left the restaurant there was no acknowledgment as is common with most Japanese restaurants. In fact we could have just left without paying the check. If you are a tourist don't expect much in the way of service because they see you as invisible. Don't waste your time here go straight to Hiro's Sushi & Japanese Kitchen. Better food, better service and lower prices.

Just came back from dinner at Takashi. Best tempura and beef teriyaki as far as I remember! If you had Japanese food often, you would notice what the subtle details they took the time to create that set them apart from a regular Japanese restaurant. This is indeed AUTHENTIC JAPANESE FOOD. Good, sincere service. They care about making Japanese food right. I don't get why people complained about their service. A little gem at the end of the shopping area. Not the best location, but it's not easy to miss with the big lanterns outside the door. Extra parking at the back. Many Yelpers mentioned the garden and decor they have outside so I won't talk about that at all. Plus we went there when it's dark already so I don't have anything to say about it. So I'll just cut to the chase and talk about the food and the service. The menu is not big, but it might not be a bad thing, as long as they cook the food right. So he ordered the tempura and chicken teriyaki, I got the tempura and beef teriyaki, after knowing that their sukiyaki was sold out. After reading the Yelp reviews, we already knew that the prices would not be cheap. $23 for a bento box is not your average price, so being in Sedona, our choices are limited for Japanese food. At least the combo comes with hot Japanese green tea and miso soup. The green tea is definitely your authentic Japanese green tea, not watered down, not American green tea, not from the tea bags. It has the aftertaste I look for for Japanese green tea, which is awesome! Miso soup was spot on. Not watered down but very flavorful. I really appreciate chefs take the time to slice thin green onions because it is not an easy thing to do, at least for me. There are a lot of places that serve thickly chopped green onions and the flavors are messed up by its pungency. Green onions must be sliced thinly! They also added small tofu cubes in the soup. Wish there were a bit more tofu, but overall the miso soup was delicious! Here comes the impressive bento box. Clearly the best tempura I can remember. Haven't had excellent tempura for so long! Batter was crispy and flavorful. Not soaked in oil at all. Just clean, crispy and hot. Even toward the end of my meal, the cooled-off tempura was still crunchy! The best part was the tempura sauce. Amazing flavor and they cared enough to heat up the dipping sauce and to mash up daikon radish for the sauce, which is how authentic tempura sauce should be done! If you haven't been to enough Japanese restaurants, you would not know what other Japanese restaurants didn't do and what Takashi did to deserve 5 stars. Beef teriyaki was the best I had! How many Japanese restaurants have you been to where they would ask you how you'd like your beef cooked for your teriyaki? Eating around San Diego and Los Angeles quite a lot, I don't really remember if I was ever asked... I was a bit shocked when she did. So I said medium. Guess what, my beef was a medium steak with grilled marks evenly cut and drizzled with delicious teriyaki sauce. That's what I'm talking about doing it right! It's not your cheap beef with watered down or over-salted teriyaki sauce! The salad consisted of red and regular cabbage and carrot strips with a sweet gingery dressing based on soy sauce. It's delicious but at the end it was a bit too salty for me so I didn't finish it. Even the orange was delicious. Juicy and right amount of sweetness + tanginess. Great way to end the meal and cleanse your palette. This is the spot for authentic Japanese food. They care about how the food is made. Everything tastes original to me, no ready-made sauces or dishes, all made fresh in their kitchen. After finishing the meal, the lady owner was cleaning up the other tables and we started chit-chatting. She's actually Japanese who used to work in a Japanese restaurant in LA with her husband. They moved here 20+ years ago and started this restaurant business 16 years ago or so. Being in Sedona and with limited choices for Japanese food, we weren't expecting too much honestly... but this far exceeds our expectation! And we both eat out in San Diego and LA a lot! Will definitely come back again if we are in Sedona again!

Takashi was easily my favorite restaurant during our stay in Sedona. I'm glad that we actually tried them because I was admittedly reluctant when I first read some of the reviews. I use this as a good example of why it's always best to try a place and form your Own opinion, rather than simply relying on that of others. Upon arriving, it has the beautiful design elements of what most people would expect of a traditional Japanese structure. There are well kept rock gardens, some greenery, lanterns, timber/wood structures. It's cool looking. The interior is more of the same design. It has an openness about it. All the wooden tables, chairs and other elements gave a rustic feel. The chair was a little small and uncomfortable at first, but was soon forgotten once we started ordering our dinner. I found the overall environment to be calming. There weren't very many people in the restaurant the night we went, so that could have contributed to the calm as well. Our server was quick to get our drink order. She and her assistant were on top of everything the entire evening as well. Very pleasant and hospitable. We started with a vegetable tempura. It wasn't better or worse than any other tempura I've had. The batter wasn't too heavy. It had a light to medium crispiness. I liked it. For my entrée, I went with the chicken katsu. It came with a bowl of miso soup, a salad and tea. I didn't drink the tea unfortunately because I was more interested in enjoying my Sapporo that evening. The miso soup was a good. The chicken katsu was moist with a crisp layer of panko bread crumbs, not too dry. I liked the tonkatsu sauce that was served with along with the meal. It gave an extra kick of flavor. The salad was refreshing and came with the usual ginger-type dressing. It was all nicely done. We tried the green tea ice cream for dessert. It was my son's first time experiencing green tea ice cream. I don't think he knew how to process the taste since it's so different from his usual ice cream flavors. He thought it was "interesting". I liked it. The entire dinner was typical of my other Japanese restaurant experiences in the US. I've never been to Japan and have no known Japanese lineage so I can't speak to the "authenticity" of the food. All I know is that it was good, and my family and I had a wonderful dinner experience. Takashi adds a touch of diversity to the Sedona food scene that I found to be missing. A food scene that overall I also found to be underwhelming. If you want good food in an enjoyable atmosphere, give them a try.

We came in an hr before closing. The server seemed very annoyed that a group of 14 was coming in last minute. She told us that we couldn't all order sushi and had to mix up our orders because it was too inconvenient for them and also couldn't order separate checks. We sat down and realized it wasn't worth the time to put up with the attitude and since she didn't want to separate the checks we took our business elsewhere. The setup was very nice and we were hoping for a more pleasant experience, but it never came to be. Oh well...

7:45pm on a Saturday night (online closing time said 9pm), looking for great sushi, but never got it. Instead, we were met with 100% attitude, disgust, and irritation for showing up before closing time. I told her we are thinking of leaving because we don't want to be an inconvenience, and she sarcastically said ok. Her negative energy was poisonous, and we couldn't stand it. Terrible service. They obviously don't want business.

We were in Sedona for one night, and I was in the mood for Japanese food. I guess winter is low season in Sedona - when we came in, the waitress was so surprised to see us walk in that she actually stood there for a few moments exclaiming, "Wow! Wow, really! Oh my God! Oh my God!" I thought maybe she was impressed with my good looks, until she explained that she was about ready to close up for the night because there had only been one other family that came in to dine. The decor was quite impressive - I don't know if I would call it authentic, but it made me feel at home and ready to eat. The food was pretty good, too! I really liked the clam appetizer. The only downside was halfway through our meal, two other groups came in, and both ordered a bunch of alcohol and started to get kind of loud. But I guess I can't really fault the restaurant for that. If we come through Sedona again, we'll definitely come by here again.

Takashi restaurant didn't seem to have good business at first. I was here with my family, we just saw the Grand Canyon. Later there were a few other people. The miso soup was satisfying, and the soft shell crab was tasty. It was a little expensive, but yummy.

Absolutely delicious! Visiting from Tucson and wanted a special night out with the family and I'm glad we found this gem. Service was attentive and friendly. Prices are what you would expect from a nice Japanese restaurant. Husband said the sushi was fresh and very tasty. Girls loved the teriyaki steak. I got the appetizer combo and it was more than I could eat. We will definitely visit this restaurant again in the future.

Sylvia was a bitch! If you don't know authentic Japanese cuisine, you will be corrected immediately. I was so intimidated, I only ordered one sushi roll. The food was great, sake was great, I would have ordered more sushi but I was scared to death that I would order it wrong. Service was a little questionable. I would hope the owner would be a little laxed with the high prices that are abundant across the menu. Don't ask questions, you will be rudely answered.

I absolutely loved this place. We were visting Sedona for the weekend and I was craving for Sushi. I went on yelp and this place popped up. The atmosphere is very intimate and authentic. I ordered sashimi which was fresh and up to par. My mom ordered tempura and she truly enjoyed it. You must try the hot tea. It was super good. I kept asking for refills :)

Takashi was not quite what we expected when we dined here. The location was so cool, it's like a mini Japanese garden when you first walk in, and in the actual restaurant, you could tell there was a lot of thought and planning going into the decor. I do wish the same thought had gone into the food.... First, the prices are a little high for a sushi restaurant....especially the entrees..... $20+ a plate is a little steep in my opinion, unless you just blow us away! But, alas, the food wasn't quite shock-worthy. The sashimi also wasn't worth the prices, the fish seemed a little past it's prime. We did order the scallop Teppan Yaki, which was decent, but again the dish was overpriced for what it was. The service was sub-par as well. Our waiter seemed a bit distracted, he was inattentive (I had to ask for my tea a couple of times, and flag him down in order to do that) and a bit snobby when we asked him questions about the food and freshness. I just feel that overall, it was an overrated experience....just because they are located in the heart of Sedona, does not make them the best option. (In my experience, the best restaurants are always away from the tourist traps) Go to Hiro's if you want quality food, for a good price and decent service.

My girlfriends and I were in town for our college reunion and on the 3rd day we were craving for Asian food. We did not know where to go and what to expect being in Sedona and we came from Houston, D.C., New York and San Fransisco. To our surprise, tucked away from the busy main thoroughfare in the Northern part of town was this Japanese resto. We ordered beef sukiyaki, beef teriyaki and chicken teriyaki. All satisfied our appetites, tasted authentic, served in perfect sized portions and priced fairly. We will surely come back if we ever get a chance to visit beautiful Sedona again.

Great find. We came to Sedona on a whim and as we drove in instantmy knew ww had made a great choice. We landed a sweet hotel a block from main street on the east side of sedona. We had been debating where to dine and at the last minute decided on here for dinner. The restaurant in within walking distance of my hotel and it was such an interesting walk here. The hotel and this restaurant and within a few blocks of each other and the walk is wicked dark. The entrance is gorgeous and the staff is very friendly and helpful. My server was Sylvia and she was incredibly open and made sure to check in and engage all of the clients present. We had the spider roll, spicy scallops, shrimp tempura rolls. Hands down the star was the spicy scallop roll. Highly recommend !!!

Pros: convenient location, atmosphere, friendly & attentive staff and fast service. Cons: doesn't compare well to native Japanese cooking (ie my mom, aunts and cousins). If you are from Japan and are just needing some hint of Japanese cooking, this restaurant may be what you need as long as you know it won't be your お母さん's cooking. Teriyaki sauce is very thick and unusually sweet and sushi rice...well it's really not sushi rice at all. It's very soft and is missing the rice vinegar seasoning that makes the sushi rice what it is in Japan. I do have to say that in spite of much of the flavors missing the mark, the owners have created a charming and welcoming atmosphere that made me a little homesick. Hot tea was delicious and tofu salad, while the cucumbers and tomatoes could use a little pickling, the use of ponzu dressing made it the perfect choice especially when served on a hot summer night. Pricey? Yup. Very.

Great place to have a date night with the wife. The food was excellent, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere is great. We had the seaweed salad, sushi, and steak and sashimi combo plate and all of it was awesome. I highly recommend Takashi. We also had a bottle of the cold Saki and it was awesome too. I travel all over the country for my job and try and have been to Japanese restaurants all over. This one ranks among the best in the country.

The sushi was terrible. I couldn't even swallow the first bite. I'm very picky with my sushi, my family is not. The only think that got me through my dinner (because I spit my first piece out and didn't eat) was the warm saki. She brought a to go box, which we let on purpose. The waitress chased us down outside to make sure we took it home, so she was dedicated ... The only pleasant portion of out dinner.

Came here with my Husband this weekend and were so impressed! The drinks were great and they provided fast service. I enjoyed the fresh sushi, the sashimi was amazing and the yellowtail roll was to die for. My husband got the tepanyaki which he really liked. It was a big serving so great for someone who is hungry. We will certainly be back!

This review is about the customer service, not the food. I can't speak on the food because I never made it to the restaurant. The reason I didn't make it to the restaurant is because when I called on 2/13/15 @ 4:55pm, the young lady that I spoke with had a very shitty attitude. I merely called to ask whether reservations were required or not, seeing that it's V-Day weekend. She replied "what day do you want the reservation?". I said "today, but I just wanted to know if it's required." She responded "It's up to you. If you do, you do. If you don't, you don't." So I asked, "Is that a yes or no?" She replied, "If you do, you do. If you don't, you don't." Well, I told her that I was going to think about it. She said, "ok." I said "bye". Of course, I'm not going there. Like ever. If the owner of the restaurant is reading this, just know that your employee lost you at least $100 in revenue tonight. Hopefully, you'll have a talk with her and take corrective action.

People are too rough on this place. I come from the SF Bay Area which has some of THE BEST Japanese cuisine around. Although this place wasn't the best I've ever had, it certainly wasn't what some of the terrible reviews are saying about it. Keep it mind that the further you are away from the ocean, the more expensive it is to get fresh seafood shipped to you. They do have a limited menu. The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice. The outdoor courtyard has a pleasant Japanese garden with a small bamboo fountain. The decor is very traditonal. I ordered the baked mussels (very savory) and had the spider roll. It tasted fine to me. I also had some spicy tuna roll (not spicy) and both the salmon roll and hamachi sashimi. It tasted exactly how it is suppose to: rich and buttery. The raw octopus wasn't the normal taste I'm use to (probably because it had been frozen since not that many people in Sedona would order octopus). Overall, it wasn't bad at all. My family and I received good service from the owner's wife and staff. I think if they added more rolls to the menu it would certainly be in their favor.

Walked in no reservation, 10 tables open and was asked of we had a reservation. Said we can't seat you for 30 min and that everyone came all at once . Well where is everyone ? Hostess not very customer friendly . Food worth the wait

I have been here a number of times from and from the service to the food, this place should not be passed up. Silvia has waited on us almost every time and she is prompt, courtesy and amazing. She has always had great humour that matches her quick wit. I love the yellowtail sashimi and tempura and my husband loves the sukiyaki. You can not go wrong eating at this wonderful restaurant.

Great traditional japanese sushi restaurant, just like sushi is suppose to taste The green tea has maca and tastes like japanese tea is suppose to taste, the edamame, the sea weed salad with sesame oil and the rolls fantastic, don't order too much because with the appetizers , salad and edamame we ordered the two rolls were more than enough The sushi chef was the manager of the famous Yamashiro's in the Hollywood hills, this an the fact you cam see japanese tourist dining there tells you the quality of this restaurant

My Husband and I went there for a double date. We live locally. The restaurant is just gorgeous and we loved sitting on the enclosed back patio. Decor inside and out is stunning/well done. We ate both rolls and the salmon and tuna sashimi. Portions were huge and fresh. Prices for the rolls/sashimi are very reasonable compared to other local sushi places and our portions were double than the others as well. Our server was the owner and she was very nice, and attentive. Food and service were fantastic, decor beautiful! We will be back again.

This is a lovely Japanese restaurant, in a back street paralleling the urban area north of the Y. Parking is in back, just past the restaurant. The entry and decor are lovely and restful, with an outdoor patio, but on a cool December night, we decided to eat indoors. Lovely art pieces, hanging paper light globes, everything done with elegance and good taste. At first, the menu seemed prosaic and overpriced, but what a surprise. The sushi rolls were larger pieces than the usual sushi bar, and even though basic rolls, very tasty. Presentation was lovely. The vegetable tempura roll was crunchy and tasty. We ordered the tempura scallops appetizer, again, a very large serving. The breading was light as snow and yet crunchy. Enough for two. Excellent. It goes on my regular list. So, we had four rolls and one appetizer, and the amount of food was so large, we took home two rolls for dinner next day. The don't serve iced tea, just hot tea. We didn't try the dinners, but we will the next time. A very pleasant, relaxing place to eat your fill and have time for some romance. BTW, did I say the menu was prosaic and over-priced? We got two meals for the price of one, The roll pieces are so large, the price is a bargain. The appetizer could feed two. The food was properly prepared, and we loved it. So don't be fooled. You will go away full, happy and serene.

First time here. Looking for a light dinner but the wait staff was less than thrilled. It took over 40 mins to get our food while other patrons who came in much later then us got their food. When asked about the food the only response i got was a shrug and said"I don't control the kitchen" and walked away. I mean really!!!???

HAD dinner at this isolated japanese restaurant. IT looks like a house converted to a restaurant. Large private parking lot behind the restaurant. We came to have dinner and the place was empty except for 1 table. There was the owner and 1 waiter. We weren't seated right away bec the front of the house was watching tv at the bar. That only goes to show that they are really slow on a weekend. I had to approach him to let him know we were waiting. Menu was the basic japanese fare. set bento dinner set and some ala carte, of course sushi and sashimi are available. I had the spider roll which was surprisingly good. Service was good. Kitchen service was a bit slow. The food- sukiyaki and my roll didnt come out after 45mins of waiting. Quite a long wait considering the place was empty.

My son and I came in here right at 5 when they opened. We were the first to arrive and I really liked the friendly staff. (I think he was an owner). After driving around all day we were very thirsty and he brought us a large bottle for the table...very nice! We ordered several appetizers which were delicious and came out quickly. Although I don't eat meat, my son raved about the beef wrapped asparagus. The vegetable tempura was excellent and the prices were resonable. Nice atmosphere, good food and spot on service. Recommended. Joy

For lunch. Nice I can walk from Uptown. I like their interior, like Japanese Soba restaurant style: Woody and Wabi-Sabi (present & empty/non-present spaces) of Japanese simple beauty though the chair is tiny and solid, not for relaxing comfort. As a native of the cuisine, I say this is not for a true lover of Authentic Japanese Cuisine. I had a combination plate of California roll and Tempra, which is way too expensive for luch to me. I like the California Roll, but sorry for the Tempra. It is not Tempra, it is just a deep-fly/Fiitta. From the price setting, I was expecting an authentic Japanese food or innovative beautiful American-Japanese food. Unfortunately neither of them. Food portion of Combination plate is ok, but I regret I should order individual pieces: appetizers and some piece of sushi. Next time, I will try to order in that way, then price is not that much expensive, hopefully.

We went to Takashi after reading the review by Hank M. He seemed like a big time foodie... recollecting eating locations like SF and Japan and some mention of 50 years of eating out. I thought "okay, he sounds like he knows what he's talking about" and we went with it. First of all.. hidden, which is fine... often hidden = gems. In this case, not quite. The restaurant is located in a nice space, with good fung shui (is that even how you spell that?) But the food is just okay.... and VERY expensive. On a Saturday night at 7:00 pm, virtually EMPTY. Hmmmm, may be that should have tipped us off. So let's start from the beginning: Tea... pretty standard, Japanese style, hot, okay. Salad is cut very thin - cabbage and carrots only, with a tangy slightly griddy sauce... and I happened to dig it for reasons I can not explain. Miso soup is made with an abundance of seaweed... which I also happen to like, but it's an acquired taste. Sushi, not particularly good nor particularly fresh. Thumbs down. Beef sukiyaki... good, but not great, and definitely not worth the nearly $30 price tag (after tax and tip). I think it's about 2.5 stars, and since there's a part of me that really want to like it, I really wanted to bumped it up to 3 stars. However, the more I think about it, the more I am hung up on the fact that it's such terrible value for the money, and at the end of the day, I can't recommend it with any enthusiasm. So sorry... 2 stars.

WORST MEAL I HAVE EVER HAD. Disgusting. My family and I came here this evening after reading great reviews on Yelp hoping to get some good Japanese food on our last night in town. We should have turned around when we arrived to find only four other people sitting down, but we decided to try it anyway. We ordered drinks, and waited about 15 minutes to get them. During that 15 minutes, we ordered our food, which took about an hour (remember, we were one of two tables seated at the restaturant). When the waiter placed the Yellowtail Sashimi I had ordered in front of me, he said "Sorry, my guy ran out of the yellowtail, so we just put some salmon on there for you instead." Attempting to be polite, I told him it was ok, but avoided the mystery fish that had been put in front of me. We were shocked when we got the bill and we had still been charged for the dish. The other sushi brought to the table looked like cat food, and everyone was questioning whether it was fish we were eating, or if they had just skinned a cat out back and put it in front of us. The dragon roll my mom ordered looked (and tasted) like chicken mcnuggets wrapped in rice. Maybe it was just a bad night, but this restaurant was THE WORST experience I have ever had eating out. The service was awful, the food was atrocious, and the fact that the restaurant didn't even buy us a drink after all of it was appalling. I am absolutely disgusted. Someone should report this place to the health department. Save your money and find another restaurant in Sedona.
