My newest Sedona Mexican favorite. Not gringo chow, absolutely wonderful.

The margaritas were great (thus the 2 stars). And that's all. If you're from Texas and know good Mexican - don't eat here. The beef fajitas were actually a huge mound of onions and peppers with tiny bites of beef swimming in marinade hiding in the pile. Seriously - probably no more than 4 oz of meat in fajitas for two. Chips were tough. Salsa bland.

Decent Mexican in Sedona. The price was definitely right -- I got out for under $10 for dinner, which from what I can see is fairly unheard of locally. Service was nothing to write home about, though.

The food was good, nothing spectacular. We got the fajitas and I thought it was a little on the sweet side. Maybe it was just my taste buds that day. Service was decent and the tortillas and chips were de-lish. Definitely a good family place.

Came across this mexican restaurant in a strip mall while on vacation in Sedona. It was pretty average to slightly below average. I had the carnitas plate which was not good, but the refried beans were good. My husband had a combo plate with carne asada, dry and flavorless, portugese shrimp- over cooked, dry but decent flavor and finally chicken breast with a tomato sauce on top-this was the best dish we tried. However it tasted more like chicken cachitore(spelling) than a mexican dish. Prices were ok for Sedona. My kids loved the bean and cheese burritos.

This is the place all the tour guides recommended. It was great! Even though it does not have a view of the Red Rocks and the decor is a mix of modern mexican and tacking tubby mariachette band sculptures, the food is delicately flavored to perfection. I had the fish tacos and my husband order the tortilla soup. Both melted in our mouths and delighted our taste buds. The service was attentive. We ate with friends who eat the food so fast we did not have time to taste it. They loved it too. My Prickely Pear Margaritta could have been stronger in color, juice and alcohol.

Good Mexican food in a grocery store strip mall? Who would've thunk it?! Had the camarones diablo...highly recommended. The salsa was great too, although it could have been a bit spicier. The service was real attentive and the atmosphere was great. If you are in Sedona, this is a great spot to check out, although it is away from the main tourist spots and the view of the rocks.

Food was just OK, prices were a little high, but everything is in Sedona. We did takeout.

We were looking for a restaurant to get a bite to eat in the evening and among all the closed restaurants we found Casa Bonita. The interior design is very warm and they took our table of nine near closing time which we appreciated. When we were seated we were very soon after served complimentary chips and salsa which was great. My single gripe about this place is related to the salsa which is way too watery in my opinion. The entrée I ordered was a shrimp burrito which was packed full of shrimp which is not what I was expecting! The Mexican food here is very authentic and I really am considering coming back here again before I leave Sedona. Don't let my salsa nitpick detract you from coming here, this is a fantastic place to have a meal.

I would not recommend this place. Not very good at all. Price very small servings! Pass this place bye!

This is one of my favorite places to go for lunch. It tends to be quiet and un-rushed, which leaves me feeling like I had a really good midday break. I am a salsa snob. I admit it. The chips here are okay, best when warm. The salsa is quite good. It has a good balance between mild and hot. Not too chunky or too thin. I have the same lunch every time because I crave it. It is the Albondigas soup, which has rich, fresh flavor and comes with a nice serving of fresh chopped onion and cilantro to mix into the soup. It also arrives with three wonderful homemade tortillas. You can choose between flour and corn. The staff is very friendly. I have more people come by my table to ask how my meal is, ask if I need anything, than any other restaurant I have ever been to. I feel very welcome there. Though I may be sabotaging my lunchtime sanctuary by getting the word out...this place is worth going to.

(This review is from 2009, but for some reason, never got posted) As ranndino said, the margaritas are great and exceptionally strong (and I'm used to strong margaritas). The service is excellent, I think they asked if everything was ok at least 3-4 times during the meal. My water or 'rita glass was never empty. The menu was also extremely well priced. Not like the overpriced drinks at cowboy club. I got the Colorado burrito as a combination plate and it was great. I finished with the churro plate which is definitely enough for two, but one hungry person could finish it. It is a hole in the wall as far as location, but totally worth it.

It's food but it's def not good food. Being from Texas and New Mexico, I've had great tex-mex and great Mexican food. This is neither. this tastes like tex mex buffet. Two stars bc people were nice

I phoned in a pick up order and they didn't get it right! This has been my continued problem in the past. So once again my coworkers and myself won't be getting food from there for a while. I wish they could at least understand English since the menus is also in English.

  • Daniel T.

If I'm being completely honest, we were originally drawn to this place because the name matched one of our Colorado hometown favorites, Casa Bonita (yes, the one from South Park), so you can imagine my disappointment when we arrived and the sign on the building read Plaza Bonita instead. That aside, the food was great and reasonably priced, and the guacamole really hit the spot.

Food taste like TV dinners. Sauce is terrible. Go to next place. I can not believe anyone would give this place a good Review. I hope it was just a bad night for the cook. The hot sauce taste like tomato soup with chili powder and the chips were greasy Sorry. I will not go back. IMG_0796.jpegIMG_0796.jpeg

The saying dont judge a book by its cover relates to this resturant. The outside looks pretty sketchy but dont let that fool you! The food and atmosphere is amazing! The entrees are pretty big and fullfilling. Also the fried ice cream is a must have! It was soo good. I would recomend this place to anyone who loves mexican food.

Best margarita in Sedona! Never mind that this is in a strip mall, if you want a wonderful margarita that isn't sickly sweet, try Bonita's organic margarita made with agave nectar. Not watery and useless like the "skinny margaritas," but not sickly sweet like your standard margarita made from pre-made mixer that is loaded with sugar. These are served in shakers like martinis, so they are ice cold but no ice to water down the wonderful drinks. Dinner was great too--try the chicken quesidilla. In a town full of woeful food choices, this is a standout. We'll definitely be back!

3.5 stars. Strolled in here for a late dinner. Yes, I'm a tourist in Arizona but I'm not a stranger to good Mexican food, and I happen to crave some. This place has a pretty big menu with some land and sea offerings. I was reminded not to get seafood from the mister as we came from the coast and might be disappointed in the quality. So I ended up with a big plate of Pollo Poblano. It came in a giant round plate, with chicken breasts lathered in spicy mole sauce. The sauce was mild at first but the heat came after a bit, which was a pleasant surprise. The cocoa was pretty strong in this sauce, and the chicken was really tender. Overall a strong dish. Wasn't a huge fan of the rice and beans (they were pretty average), but the chips and salsa were quite good. Our servers disappeared a couple times when we needed him, but the restaurant was near closing at that point so it could be an off experience. Definitely a decent place to stop by if you're hungry.

When my brother suggested we go to Casa Bonita. Immediately I thought- Food and Fun in a Festive Family Atmosphere! (by way of Eric Cartman) And even though it did not have nacho cheese falls like in the cartoon, this place was worth the stop while in Sedona The food was very good and for very reasonable prices. For a family of four, easily get away with 40 dollars for dinner. They have a full Mexican menu with tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chicken, beef, seafood, salads, etc... Nothing here that night disappointed Like I saw in Lizette's review, this is not a tourist spot but somewhere locals get together to have some margaritas. All the food came out piping hot. We tried the Verde Roja Salad, Pollo Azada Burrito, three-item combo, and a grilled shrimp platter. All very fresh. no complaints. And the service was spectacular, constantly bringing more water, more chips, more salsa. Oh and if staying at a local hotel, see if they have 10% coupons. We picked one up on the way in. Definitely a recommend if in the Sedona area.

Best fish tacos I've had. Kind of a strange strip mall location but inside- yum!

What a surprise! Yelp! did it again...trusty travel partner. We were hungry for Mexican (of course) and I did a Yelp! search in the area and up comes Casa Bonita. We tried it and it was delicious! Great organic margaritas and the cheese enchiladas with Tomatillo sauce rocks! A must! Don't try those other crappy mexican restaurants along the Sedona strip (Javelina)....yuck!

Always consistently good with excellent service for a reasonable price. Not spectacular but dependable and delicious. Their green corn tamales are hard to beat. I also like their Chili Verde, Chile Colorado and many other dishes. We made a good friend in Antonio, a waiter we originally met at the Cottonwood location. He has to be one of the nicest young waiters in the business. We always enjoy catching up on family events with him. He is a top notch server who make you feel very special.

Found this on yelp passing through Sedona. Atmosphere was warm and fun and the staff was both friendly and fast. Loved the food (especially the beef Colorado it was amazing) and the portions were plenty big.

We were traveling through Sedona on our way to the Grand Canyon and stopped at Casita Bonita for lunch. Maybe my standards are too high (although I very seriously doubt it), but this was easily the worst mexican/tex-mex meal I've had in a looong time (maybe ever?). Maybe my husband and I just didn't order their best dishes, but we were both underwhelmed. Both of our dishes were essentially flavorless. I'm sure there are better places to spend your money in Sedona. On top of the sub-par food, we noticed on their computer when walking into the restaurant (I guess the one waiters use to keep track of orders) that the screensaver said something like "Bienvenidos! Remember to up-sell!" Are you freaking kidding me???

We eat ( take out) at the casa all the time. Love the expresso vegi burito. But you are getting sloppy in the kitchen. Hair in my burrito.. a piece of hard plastic, Avocado stems and Tomato tops in my food. Come on guys.. we love your place. Get it together. We want to continue enjoying your food.

GREAT food, REASONABLE prices (versus UptownSedona) 2.21.13 Bright, colorful, simple, gem of a place. VERY good food this day. Cool, crisp, fresh salsa w/fresh chips. Guacamole side came fast - good spicing. HUGE beer glass (32 oz?) My friend had flautas - raved about them. I had the 3 combo - Enchilada, Green Corn Tamale, and Chile Relleno. Xcllent - Tamale's corn was sweet. All were fresh, hot, authentic - unpretentious (read: "mama style") presentation. He lived in Mexico / Cntrl Am; I've lived in CA w/ abundant taquerias. GOOD stuff here. Ample portions - couldn't even finish meals - we were VERY hungry. Laco, the floor manager was friendly, funny, helpful. Alejandro, waiter was quick, and kept salsa and water refreshed and full.

Food was amazing. If it weren't for my husbands allergic reaction to the margarita, it would have been 5 stars. Don't let the outside storefront strip mall location deter you! It really is good food and good service.

  • Dennis C.

Good Mexican food but sometimes dishes are inconsistently prepared from one visit to another. Carne asada is good. Fajitas are quite good. Stick with the standards and you'll enjoy. We've always had walk-in seating and friendly service. Very good dinner values for Sedona.

So much better than oaxaca in uptown...they are the only place with mole poblano for miles.....

We got the pollo con crema, chile verde, and the cameron enchiladas. Love the sauce on the pollo con crema!

Great little place! I had the taquitos and they were crispy and delicious! My hubby had the prawn quesadillas which he loved! Tacos el pastor and tortilla soup was delicious according to my parents! Margaritas were awesome!

From a vegetarian perspective. Please note that this is now called "Plaza Bonita" but the signs hadn't been changed yet. The interior is colorfully decorated and the staaff and friendly and quick. We had no less than three different waiters stop by our table to refill our water or ask if anything was needed. Water and chips were on the table with 2 minutes and our orders arrived less than 10 minutes after they were placed. Portions were large and filling (we made lunch from the leftovers the next day). I have problems finding decent vegetarian Mexican food because a lot of the chains and Tex-Mex places think that vegetarian means "3 kinds of cheese and slather it with cream sauce." Plaza Bonita has an interesting item called the Garden Fresco Burrito described as "Lightly sautéed fresh seasonal vegetables, rice, and whole black beans wrapped in a flour tortilla. Topped with a zesty burrito sauce and salad greens." This is one of the best vegetarian burritos I've ever had. The taste is a bit more subtle than I expected, which isn't a bad thing. On a lot of veggie burritos all I can taste is the cheese and sour cream. My wife had the Espresso Vegetarian Burrito, which is a bit closer to a traditional veggie dish, but was still far better than most other versions of this that we tried.

It is serviceable Mexican food - 2.5 stars. It's located in a nondescript strip mall in Sedona. Service was good and efficient. Food was meh... nothing to write home about and ... well serviceable. chips and salsa - the salsa is fresh and spicy. Guacamole was very good - fresh, smooth and very flavorful. Chicken mole - I am not an expert of mole but this had a slight peanut-y taste. Not bad but not fantastic. Mexican chicken - a lot of white meat chicken in a tomato-y sauce. The black beans were fine - nice tooth feel, but lacking in much flavor. The highlight of the meal was the corn tortilla - tasted very fresh with great corn flavor.

Like some other reviews, we recommend you don't let the location bother you, this is a great place that just happens to be located in a strip mall. If you get Laco as your server, consider yourself lucky. The food was outstanding and the margaritas are out of bounds!!

    (4)
  • Stan L.

This was not what we expect for a good Mexican restaurant. The chips were stale, my Burrito and Sarah's Chiming. We're below standard. The Burrito had no flavor. We had the Churro for dessert. It tasted like old oil had been used to cook them.

OK... After two visits here, I'm playing the mediocre card. Nothing special, in fact, last visit, Wifey & I left with queasy stomachs. It's cute inside, the staff is friendly, it's reasonably priced, but why the hell are there no good Mexican restaurant in this tourist ridden town? This 'aint it!

We wish that we could take this restaurant home with us. Hands down the best Mexican food we have ever had. The chill relleno had just the right amount of heat. The green tamale was so good, I wish that could ship them home. Even the refried beans were light not pasty with too much lard.

The hotel staff recommended this place to us for dinner. Pretty standard strip-mall Mexican restaurant. Nothing too special really. As a salsa fan, I have to say that theirs was pretty damn good, though not excellent. The food itself was incredibly average and the guacamole looked like it was from a can- not what I want to see at a Mexican place! Final note: we were there on a pretty quiet weekday night and the service was shockingly slow. I wouldn't really recommend this place.

The food was OK-chicken mole, rice, and beans. However, the organic margarita was really good! Nuff said.

When we found out the the wait at Elote Cafe was 1 1/2 hours, we asked if they could suggest another Mexican Restaurant. They suggested Casa Bonita (now Plaza Bonita). It was obviously not upscale like Elote, but it turned out that we were fine with its low key atmosphere. The Carne Asada plate was very good, and the margaritas were great too! Tasty guacamole in addition. If you don't mind a strip mall setting and a casual atmosphere, then you will be pleased.

After touring the 4 wheel drive roads we stopped into Casa Bonita because our host stated that it was the best Mexican Food in Sedona. When referring to Sedona, he is correct. The food was better than most establishments for the price. The service was a little lacking when we went in. I asked for extra napkins 3 times and more salsa 2 times before receiving them. The Carne Asada that I had was a miniscule portion after hiking. The food in general was prepared well, but the portions compared to other mexican restaurants that I have been in was lacking. It is a decent place if you are staying in Sedona, but if you want Really Good Mexican take the 15 minute drive to Cottonwood.

We met with some friends who live in Sedona for dinner at Casa Bonita around Christmas time. The service was great. The portions were a good size. We had a nice dinner, good conversation and were happy we could afford to eat there. Everything we tried was prepared nicely.

BUN..NU...UEL...I...TOS!! I don't know why I feel the need to sing that song every time I say Casa Bonita. Probably because I was super excited to find something in Sedona that wasn't gourmet or tourist-trappy. Recommended by our hotel staff at the Sugar Loaf, this place was pretty darn good. I had the chicken fajitas which stayed cooking/sizzling next to me on the table for a good 20 minutes after they sent it my way. Also got myself a raspberry margarita, which was very strong and after a few sips I was feeling sassy. The food was tasty, the beans were straight from the pot, their enchilada sauce was a little sweet but still good and their salsa was the best. They serve you warm tortilla chips and this addicting salsa that I just stuffed my face with. The bill wasn't too pricey at all which was nice. A definite place to check out, even though it is located in a strip mall...don't be fooled this place is good mexican eats.

If you don't know it's there you will miss it. Just a hole in a mall from the outside. The food was the best Mexican I've ever had! Mmmmm... yummma... yummma. I feel I do have to qualify the above statement by saying that I live in Boston so am deprived when it comes to good Mexican food. Waaahhh! So many Mexicanos around Boston and no one has opened a good Mexican place? What up with that? Maybe I'm wrong and there is one. If so hit me up and enlighten me, por favor. And now we get to the good stuff. De margaritas de Casa Bonita... Conyo!!! I don't know what they put in those things, but they are out of this world and are what really makes this casa a bonita! Muy buen is an understatement. Me and my mamacita were having such a great ol' time after just one. After two? After two you don't even wanna know what happened. Their margaritas is what the person who recommended it to us talked about the most and boy was he right. I have a sinking feeling that I will now be disappointed every time I have one anywhere else. Those were just a total bombaso! Oh, and did I mention that this place was very reasonably priced? No, I did not, so there, I just fixed that.

Dont judge a book by its cover.. Pollo Fundido is the best ive had !!! The Organic Margarita is to die for !!!! Even my husband that doesnt drink margaritas had 5 of them lol ! Laco the Waitor and the other staff as well were very inviting and amazing!!!

Service was great, the beer was cold and the food was really excellent. It's not fine dining, it's Mexican as it should be: simple, fresh, tasty. Even the hodpodge interior looked good after my third cerveza.

After a 1 hour search for a restaurant we stumbled accross Casa Bonita's and were very satisfied. I had the mango margarita & my pickey eater (my boyfriend) had a chicken fundio burrito. We were both 100% pleased with our meals! After eatting at Elote the night before, we were happy to be back to some traditional & affordable mexican flare. Would recommend to anyone visiting Sedona!

In a city with as many tourist-y haunts as red rocks, it was a boon to get a tip from a local to try out Casa Bonita. Simple and homey--if your mama's like mine--this casa offered a huge variety of dishes. The seafood offerings were surprising; prawns, shrimp, crab, scallops, and fish, of course. (The shrimp dish we had was chock full o' shrimp!) Amid the requisite pork, beef, and chicken were good choices for vegetarians. I wouldn't recommend the fish tacos--I didn't love the sauce; it was a bit sweet. Decor is typical, but fun. It's hidden in a grocery store plaza, so try not to miss this gem.

  • Zack K.

Really wonderful service, and the place looks like a lot of love has been spent on making it a special place. The food was delicious; not standard Mexican restaurant cuisine. They took the same dishes and gave them life. The dishes had unique - yet authentic - flavors that brought out the subtleties of the ingredients. Overall, the experience was positive start to finish, and the people and the food were great.

I love this place! Family owned. Great service and very cute inside! The salsa is fresh and chips are good. The guacamole is great! Order the same thing every time. Vegetarian Fajitas. Vegetables are smoky and perfectly cooked & the mexican rice is flavorful. My friend always gets the Chicken fajitas and LOVES them. Have also enjoyed the cheese enchiladas & tostada salad.

Recommended by the resort. The resort said they offered a more authentic menu. So we decided to give it a try. We both enjoyed the food and the service was great. Chips and salsa were fine. Thick chips, and mild to medium heat salsa. I ordered the Arroyos con Pollo (Chicken & Rice). Which It was down right tasty. Even included lots of vegetables (which I like) and the sauce was barely sweet. Portion size was way more than I could eat. I ended up packing half in a to-go box. mmmm- The husband ordered fajitas. He always seems to order fajitas no matter where we go. He said they were alright, but more meat wouldn't have hurt. Tho, he ate every bite; I'd say he rather enjoyed the meal. We both left with full tummy's.

Yelp didn't steer us wrong. Great little authentic strip mall restaurant in a beautiful setting. My husband continued his quest to conquer every mole in the Southwest and wasn't disappointed with theirs. I had my favorite, flautas, and loved them. Courteous, prompt, service. Water glass kept full. We'd go back. Thanks for the good directions to this great spot!

headed to casa bonita because another restaurant (which will be getting a negative review after this) refused to serve us after 9pm. the food was ok. i got the camarones portuguese which was prawns wrapped in bacon. served w rice and beans. my meal was actually delicious. but then again i love anything that has bacon so i might be biased. the original margarita was alright.. a bit too sweet for my preference. some of my friends' meals were too salty though. and one was upset that they didn't have lengua on the menu. i like that they give you chips and salsa right when you sit down so that's a plus. overall an ok place.

We ate dinner at Casa Bonita while we were in Sedona on the advice of one of the women at one of the information buildings. The service was quick and attentive, and the food came out quick. Aside from us, there were three other groups that were seated in the restaurant. My girlfriend ordered the beef fajitas, while I ordered the Mexican Trio. When the food came out, the portions were almost scary. The food was ok, not the best I've ever had, but not the worst. At the end of our dinner, we had a full box of leftovers to bring back with us, with both of us being thoroughly stuffed.

EXCELLENT service. We ordered chili verde and two tacos (beef). Not too bad. The chips were pretty good, nice and thick. Margaritas were ok, other drinks were not as good. Beer was too cold, but not too bad otherwise. Overall a so-so restaurant.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
