So good! Great salsa bar. Fresh chips.

Everything on the menu is good. Salsa bar is excellent. I'd recommend this to anyone who truly loves Mexican food.

CAN"T BELIEVE how the food has gone downhill! This used to be our favorite mexican food in Flagstaff but no more! The meat in the hard taco was flavorless. The relleno was a VERY firm thick green chili with a huge gob of barely melted cheese, barely any sauce. I can't figure out what they did to the rice...each grain was huge and mushy. No flavor in the beans or rice. We couldn't even finish our meal. Hopefully the other Tacos Los Altos on the East Side (different owners) has not changed their menu! We had a much better meal at Del Taco!

Pretty good food for a quick stop. Salsa was flavorful, beans taste good, not much to complain about except paying for this. carne asada was tender and flavorful, will be back

I'll have to be the bearer of a little bit worse of a review than the ones posted. As far as service goes, I give it high appraisal. The manager took my order by coincidence and he was really nice; telling me of the specials of the day. The cook handed me my food when it was completed and she was friendly. I also have enjoyed the salsa bar and the fact they had onions and carrots. As far as the burrito goes, I felt I overpaid in comparison to the other fast food mexican places in Flagstaff. The tortilla had some burned marks and the burrito became pretty messy. Their burritos with meat in it ran as high as almost $7. I don't believe what you get matched. You would be better off getting s combination plate. It is also a pet peeve of mine when they instantly assume you don't want a receipt so they just throw it away without asking. But overall, the food was pretty good.

I lived in Santa Cruz, CA for many years, it is a place with many great Taqueria's, and this is the first place in Arizona that I have found that has the same vibe and flavor of a California style Taqueria. Awesome meats, great salsa bar, and friendly service. I really like the decor as well, lots of old pictures of Mexico and it's people, many from the era of the Mexican revolution, super cool.

I've had many burritos over the years, and TLA has far and away the best. This was my go-to for years after my workout, getting the carne-asada burrito. It's reasonably priced, and if you want a little more food you can get the chips and salsa. If you haven't been here, treat yourself like an adult and try it.

This place is the spot for Mexican food! Adobada burrito is a must. Beef tongue tacos are "da bomb". Horchada is muy authentico. My boyfriend got the carne asado burrito and ate the whole thing...I RARELY see him finish anything.

My order was incorrectly delivered to a table. When I went to ask about my food, the manager/owner seemed to care, but was unable to correct the situation. After expressing that I would no longer be able to eat there and asking for a refund (my lunch hour now missed), I was told "I'm sorry you're perfect." The manager/owner does not value your business.

Food far exceeded expectations. No wonder the line was out the door at lunchtime. tacos were everyone's favorites, burritos couldn't quite compare. We live in LA and are from San Francisco and we were saying we wished we knew a taco place this good near where we live! Highly recommended .

I just love this place. Food is awesome and made with love. It's been my favorite Mexican food in Flag for a long time. The salsa bar is AMAZING, and now they even have a little bar - so you can get a margarita as well. The staff is always super nice and the owners are so gracious. Love, love, love.

Terrible service!! I have gone there about three times now and they make you pay for the chips and salsa...and barely give you any at all! Such a ripe off! They also ration how much salsa you can get at the salsa bar! Another thing that really tops it off was that the sign on the door says they're supposed to be open on Saturdays until 8:00pm, but when I went there, they were closed! This has happened twice now and considering the fact that I live on the complete opposite side of town, that is really messed up and inconsiderate of their customers.

  • Jesse K.

The only reason this place gets 2 stars is because the salsa bar is well above average. The tacos (crunchy beef, and rolled with cheese + guac) featured tortillas that were way too thick and featured a bare minimum of meat. For 6 tacos and 1 order of chips + guac we paid nearly $17. This place just isn't nearly that good, even if you are trying to find a decent place to eat in Flagstaff, which clearly preys on tourists. Eat somewhere else!

  • Cam J.

I did not like my cheese enchiladas! The cheese wasn't even melted, not even a little bit. It was just cold shredded cheese in a tortilla. My son had the chicken soft tacos which he said did not taste good, the chicken was "yucky" and this is not a picky eater! My other son had the bean burrito was just that, beans. Just a tortilla filled with beans, no onions, no salsa, no cheese...nothing. We won't be going back.

Excellent mom and pop establishment. I usually get the chorizo combo plate and it sets me up for the rest of the day. Will try something else next time. Nice salsa/condiments bar as well, has mild to extra hot salsa (though extra hot doesn't seem that hot to me). Recent dining area expansion helps pack in the customers.

My wife and I were on vacation from South Phoenix, where we enjoy very authentic Mexican food. We decided to tryTacos Los Altos, although we were a bit skeptical as it looked new and unseasoned. However, when we walked in the door we were pleasantly surprised! The decor was cheery, beautifully decorated and welcoming, with a family atmosphere. The place was spotless and clean. The staff were welcoming and attentive and our food was delivered to our table almost immediately and very hot. The food was authentic, homemade Mexican at very reasonable prices. We ate the meatball soup that was spiced just right and we shared a chicken quesadilla. They had a nice selection of fresh salsa bar to add to any dish. I would highly recommend Tacos Los Altos for a quick, inexpensive home cooked meal that's delicious!

If you are in need of a Sonoran Mexican Food fix, this is the place. The menu is huge, so study before you go and if you go on Sundays, you can order special items. The staff is extremely friendly and they do not mind if you speak "Spanglish". Great place for kids and adults with the new bar. The Salsa bar is the best in town, and the hot is HOT!! Cuidado!

  • Joe W.

Ordered a breakfast burrito and they sent out the wrong food. It was so delicious I couldn't even think to complain or return it. The staff is helpful and nice, and the salsa is delicious!

    (5)
  • Heather W.

The breakfast burritos are bigger than your face! Seriously! and jam packed with delicious insides. Along with you meat of choice, they include egg, cheese and lots of potatoes - yu-uuum! I also tried the roll tacos, which I ordered with beef, but they brought out chicken instead. It actually turned out to be great though and I preferred them to the beef ones! They do get a star knocked off for flubbing up my order though. I also found it weird that they limited the amount of salsa you are able to have at the salsa bar to 2 per person. You are supposed to go up to the counter and pay if you take more. Honors systems never work. :p Anyhow, definitely a good Taco shop and very clean. I will be back next time I'm visiting Flag.

    (4)
  • Santiago S.

Finally a good Mexican place in flag! This place is awesome the mini asada tacos are insanely awesome and salsa is way better then east side. Their horchata is also totally awesome !

    (5)
  • Lynn M.

This was, by far, the best divey Mexican I've ever had. The mixed burrito was amazing, especially to someone that doesn't normally like burritos. I will definitely make this my choice lunch place whenever I'm in town.

  • Brittany J.

This place is probably one of my most favorite Mexican spots in town - the food is reasonably priced and tasty, the employees are attentive, and the dining area is decently comfortable. I usually get carne asada burritos or beef tacos (both of which have always been good). The only reason as to why I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because they never have horchata available. It's always in the process of being made which isn't very convenient for me since horchata is usually the main reason as to why I even crave Mexican food in the first place.

  • Sean K.

This is a great taco shop. When I first moved to Flagstaff from San Diego back in the 90's to attend NAU. I fell in love with the town right away. My only apprehension was the serious lack of quality Mexican food. Well nearly 20 years later I'm back, and a lot has changed. Tacos Los Altos reminds me of the awesome Mexican food I missed moving from San Diego in the 90's. Tacos Los Altos really hits the spot whenever I feel a tad homesick and hungry. Great staff, great food, and a salsa bar.

    (5)
  • Erik P.

Food is good at a great price. It's the little things that make Mexican food good like salsa and tortillas. They got that down. We go mostly for the horchata but they never have it ready when they open or an hour after they open. Gone about 4 different time to find out it isn't ready yet and it's noon.

    (4)
  • Jay J.

It was a nice quick little spot to stop and get a bite to eat, it's close to H.E.B. Not the best but it was ok, and a nice change from the other chain of mexican food.

  • Brian H.

We go here for lunch once in a while. I've tried several items on the menu, and they've all been pretty good. I had the lunch special the other day, which was a burrito with carne asada and cilantro, and it was delicious. The service seems to be consistently pretty good as well.

    (4)
  • Joseph S.

Great food. Kind of expensive but it tastes amazing. Salsa is the best in town and the tacos are to die for. My smoking hot wife said the taco shells were too hard but I found them to be perfect. Each time I go and they're busy they always forget a part of my order. Other than that, a must eat.

I come from Los Angeles and have lived in and traveled extensively in Mexico. So, I think I have a pretty good idea when it comes to Mexican food. I typically make initial impressions based on a place's salsa. TLA have a salsa bar with about 7 types ranging from "very hot" to mild, which included a cucumber infused salsa verde. I tried them all and they were all excellent and very fresh. Good start. I was with a group and we ordered a bunch of items from torta de carne asada to quesadilla to caldo de pollo. All of them were very good. The owner worked around my gluten free, carb-lite diet and made me chicken fajitas with a nice side salad. The fajitas used chile pasillas instead of gross bell pepper and were excellent. Lots of good shredded chicken breast and very flavorful. I used salsa as the salad dressing and it was all spot on. Plus the owners are very friendly and welcoming and I hear have many items that are off the menu. Ask them! All in all fantastic and authentic Guadalajaran-style food. The decor is cool and they have TVs for sports along with a bar. We will definitely be going back each time we come to Flagstaff.

This is by far the best and most authentic mexican food I've found in Flagstaff. I love their carne asada burritos and their mini tacos are as good as they come! I love that it is family owned and operated, you can taste the love in the food. They highlight specialty agua fresca fruit drinks that are sweet, fresh and delicious. I am so happy the west side of Flagstaff has such a great mexican restaurant the west zone folks : )

This is my favorite Mexican food place in flagstaff. Every dish I have ever ordered has good flavor. I give them kudos for having drinks such as horchata or jamaica hibiscus and being able to get one free refill of those drinks. I recommend the carne asada Burrito or the carnitas plate. Great place to meet up with friends for dinner or lunch.

  • Corey L.

Although skeptical at first, the Mexican food was tasty and traditional. Service was quick and atmosphere is what you might expect for a corner taco joint. The pico de gallo was good, additionally salsa bar was excellent. I had the carne asada taco combo that was served with rice and beans. The carne asada had good flavor and was a good choice overall. The beans were delicious and were most likely made with lard! Overall, it was quick and cheap. It was close to our hotel and definitely looked like a better choice than the greek grill place next door. The next ime I'm in flagstaff, I will be returning.

Honestly the best Mexican food in Flagstaff. Ive traveled all around Mexico and am from California. Ive tried out all the Mexican places in town and tacos los altos (west side) is definitely the best all around. The owner and staff are totally friendly and helpful. They keep the place very clean always welcoming. The food is the some of the best if found outside of Mexico. Their carnitas plate and mix burrito are my favorite items there. Their tortillas are made in house and are delicious. They always have great salsas other specials. I have never been disappointed with anything Ive gotten from there neither has anyone Ive ever eaten there with. Their aguas frescas and horchata are always a great compliment to a good Mexican meal. Portions are hefty but you will have no problem finishing your plate. Great breakfast burritos as well. They serve their breakfast all day too.

FINALLY! Tacos Los Altos opened up another store, in a slowly dieing shopping center behind the Wal-Mart, however, they are BOOMING in both good food and business. This satellite of the main Altos offers a smaller menu, but the food is still great, my only gripe was that the sauce for my Chili Rellenos wasn't that spicy. One free refill on all Mexican drinks, salsa bar, and the same atmosphere all lead to a great experience. If you don't want to ride over to the east side, I suggest trying out this one.

    (4)
  • Ashley D.

Good, cheap, quick Mexican (American) food. Somewhat greasy. The refried beans were flavorless, but the salsa was tasty. The horchata was DELICIOUS. Great value!

    (3)
  • Sarah L.

I forgot to mention that they have really great horchata, but if it's freshly made, it can be gritty. It's better when it's been sitting for a bit and the grit has settled. Don't go for the bottom of the barrel either (you can see it, so you'll know-and it really is in a barrel shaped container). I remember their hours being sort of weird. It's been awhile since I've been there, so I can't remember exactly what they are. I think they're closed on Mondays too, and maybe Tuesdays?

I go to a Tacos Los Altos on EAST Rt 66. Didn't have any idea there was another one. Chile Rellenos. Yum. Carne Asada. Yum. Enchiladas. Yum. This place is a real dive, and that's a compliment. Very cheap, very good. Not your average bland "mexican" food that so many people like. One of my favorite places to eat in Flag.

  • Cindy N.

Rice, beans, chips, tacos are great better than the greasy stuff from La Fonda's & Kachina's. Their chili is mild but not gross, greasy, chunky n over cooked like Kachina's & La Fonda's. BUT not The best Mexican food I have ever tried. U will not find any here in Flagstaff.

  • Mark J.

I haven't eaten from a ton of their menu, but everything I have had has been amazing. Insanely large portions and cheap price tag makes Tacos Los Altos even better. Oh and the breakfast burritos and about as good as they get.

  • Paula D.

I don't normally eat out at Mexican food eateries but this is the best by far in Flagstaff. I love their salsa bar! I always order their amazing bean burrito and crave it on a weekly basis with their red chile sauce ... mmmm. I think I dream about it too. I tried their tacos, one of each, chicken, beef, and fish. I am hooked on the fish tacos. Taquitos are very good too. Always a favorite stop for me. My only suggestion for the restaurant: please have the Jicama drink every other day. We crave it all the time.

  • Emerson J.

This is a good restaurant. If you like beef, get the "Barbacoa". It's big chunks of slow cooked beef in a semi-spicey red sauce, comes with rice, beans, and tortillas. Absolutely Amazing! If you like pork, get the carnitas. Best carnitas in Flagstaff in my opinion. My classic test of a good Mexican restaurant is the "Rice n' Beans" test. Mexican Rice and beans are one of my favorite foods. Tacos Los Altos has incredibly flavorful rice and perfectly cooked beans. The salsa bar is good and the "medium green" on is my favorite. They make their own pickled carrots and peppers which are awesome. Sometimes they sell homemade tortillas. They're a little pricey but so worth it. As others have said, the downside is that chips are $2 and they don't do half orders like the East-Side location.

Cuidado!

Ordered a breakfast burrito and they sent out the wrong food. It was so delicious I couldn't even think to complain or return it. The staff is helpful and nice, and the salsa is delicious!

Finally a good Mexican place in flag! This place is awesome the mini asada tacos are insanely awesome and salsa is way better then east side. Their horchata is also totally awesome !

This was, by far, the best divey Mexican I've ever had. The mixed burrito was amazing, especially to someone that doesn't normally like burritos. I will definitely make this my choice lunch place whenever I'm in town.

Food is good at a great price. It's the little things that make Mexican food good like salsa and tortillas. They got that down. We go mostly for the horchata but they never have it ready when they open or an hour after they open. Gone about 4 different time to find out it isn't ready yet and it's noon.

It was a nice quick little spot to stop and get a bite to eat, it's close to H.E.B. Not the best but it was ok, and a nice change from the other chain of mexican food.

We go here for lunch once in a while. I've tried several items on the menu, and they've all been pretty good. I had the lunch special the other day, which was a burrito with carne asada and cilantro, and it was delicious. The service seems to be consistently pretty good as well.

  • Bryan R.

The sides of beans and rice were excellent. Cheese enchiladas were creamy and savory. The beef burrito was the right amount of spicy. Even the chips and cheese had great flavor. My wife's margarita had the perfectly balanced sip that hits right there in that one spot of the cheek (we're thinking grapefruit and peach were involved).

Good off the beaten path tacos at a fair price. Better than most in Flagstaff. I would suggest if you want more of a sit down place go to La Fonda. For a quick lunch this is the place to go.

Authentic Mexican food. Very good. Got the 3 mini tacos with Asada, adobada, and carnitas. Carnitas is superb. Adobada is good. Asada is decent but not grilled over an open flame, so kinda bland but still good. Good prices. Good spicy salsas. Good service. Better than most Mexican food places around here.

Shrimp tacos and Asada tacos are amazing!!! They let us have free samples of the carnitas. The horchata and watermelon drinks were refreshing. We loved the salsa bar!!!

Great find in Flagstaff--we happened to stay at the Super 8 nearby. I was impressed with how many items are on the menu. I would have liked to eat more than one meal there, but we were leaving town that day. We had the carne asada burrito customized with onion and pepper, the bean and cheese burrito, and the chicken chimichanga. All were very good. We loved the salsa bar. The staff are humble and nice, and it felt like a family-owned restaurant. Go there!

My wife and I ordered two dinners to go with chips. For two enchiladas with rice and beans was 18.00 bucks with tax. A small bag of chips was 2 more dollars. We had a 5 minute drive over to hotel room. The food was cold and tasted OK. Could have had the same at Del Taco for half the price.

    (1)
  • Paula W.

  • Sam K.

Not as good as the real place on 66. Food had no flavor, the salsas all tasted the same. My chicken was so over cooked it was like eating through the sole of tennis shoes. 2 stars mainly because they have alcohol and outdoor seating.

    (4)

    (5)

Where did the flavor go? TLA West used to be great! Bland carnitas and beef tacos. The salsas were watery and not all that fresh. The portions are still huge!! The Students are back, I'll chalk this up to the new semester. I'll be back...hope someone finds the spice rack!

Been coming here for years and it's always good! I honestly miss its warmth at this very minute. Staff is nice and cool salsa bar. Best oaxacan fast food style place in town. Veggie burrito with green sauce really does it for me. Also Dillon rocks!

This is my stop every single time I go to Flagstaff from Vegas. Sometimes 2x during my trip! I cannot get enough of the Horchata and fresh chile bar they have. I love the rice too. I can eat a whole plate of it with some squeezed lime and sour cream. You won't be disappointed!

I visited Flagstaff last week, and enjoyed two meals from Tacos Los Altos. I stopped in on Wednesday for the taco/enchilada combo and was so pleased with the meal that I visited again - the very next day - for the tostada. While they do have a full dining area, including outside seating, most people seemed to be here for the take out. That's the route I went both times, and each time I had my meal in my hands quickly and was headed out the door. They've also got a small salsa/fixings bar so you can load up on your salsa of choice (everything from mild to super hot, along with onions, pickled stuff, cilantro, etc). While everything I tried was good, I highly recommend the tostada!

wow, the review all good and my barbacoa plate looks yummy. Almost had to laugh when the server asked if I need silverware, do people eat refried beans and barbacoa with their fingers? Another chuckel when my server brings the cutest tiny plastic fork. That is where the fun stopped, the first bite of the barbecoa made my mouth pucker like I had just licked dry the rim of a margaretta glass. The salt was so overpowering, it made the meat unedible. I mentioned it to my server who could only say, I am so sorry, would you like me to pack it to go? Where do they find this type of employees? On my way out I told the owner to taste his barbecoa as he should not serve it to anyone else as someone dropped a salt container into it. He also said he was sorry and would look into it. What a waste of close to $10 on my part and the waste of a good customer on their part for fixing the situation the way they did not. Sure looked good but after my whole experience, I won't be back.

Still my favorite in town. Portions could be a LITTLE larger. But thats my only complaint. Good salsa bar, authentic atmosphere (cafeteria style like a lot of indoor Mexican places in Mexico) - flavors are great with the dishes. They stopped carrying Jamaicia and Tamarindo flavored sodas though.....

I feel forever in debited to Tacos Los Altos because it was the first place I ever had a Torta, and a love affair was born. I personally love the Torta with carnitas! I have not had a bad meal here. Their homemade salsas are spectacular and spicy! I also love that you can get a breakfast burrito anytime! So many places stop serving breakfast at like 10:30am, but not here! Those breakfast burritos are also HUGE. I can only handle half, but then I have breakfast for the next day- Yay!

Tacos Los Altos is a fantastic restaurant! Delicious and authentic mexican food. The barbacoa plate is outstanding and their tortas are superb! Even their beans are great. Good daily specials. Salsa bar is top notch with a variety of homemade salsas. Los Altos also serves excellent homemade horchata, jamaica, watermelon, and other seasonal fruit drinks as well as beer and margaritas. Family owned and operated. Friendly staff provides wonderful service. Recently expanded with a bar, plenty of tables and some outside seating. Lines can be long around lunch, but service is relatively quick. Prices are reasonable, slightly higher than some fast mexican food restaurants, however the quality of the food reflects why. Comfortable, family friendly atmosphere. Great for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

My boyfriend and I had Tacos Los Altos for the very first time on Friday! It was the most amazing experience to go along with the friendly staff and the most delicious fresh, food! My boyfriend had the carnita plate which came with fresh hot tortillas and he thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the chorizo breakfast burrito and the tortilla was very delightfu & fresh! We have found our new place for fresh, authentic Mexican food in Flagstaff! We definitely would recommend this place to anyone looking for real Mexican food!

Ok, so I have tried it 3 times. I have only had burritos. I had a carnita's with added beans and it was pretty good. Second time I had a carne asada. I knew that was mistake. The meat was disgusting, watery and just cheap meat. Gross! Super gross. I actually felt sick after eating it. I had carnita's again today and the pieces were too big and slightly chewy and the burrito was distributed badly. Everything was on the one bottom will all the meat at the top. It just does not seem consistent. I will make one more attempt because the first burrito was not bad for Arizona burritos but I know a better place in town I may frequent instead. I think they are cutting corners and that's a good way to loose business. Spend the money on quality product, including carne asada.

I've had many burritos over the years, and TLA has far and away the best. This was my go-to for years after my workout, getting the carne-asada burrito. It's reasonably priced, and if you want a little more food you can get the chips and salsa. If you haven't been here, treat yourself like an adult and try it.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
