We arrived at this restaurant by mistake. We were trying to find a different restaurant that we'd eaten at five years before. As we entered, we immediately knew we were in the wrong place, but we decided to give it a try. We began to read previous reviews and began to get very nervous. As we looked around, the floors were filthy. There were also spots of food on the wall. Although the women's restroom was cleaned, according to my husband, the men's restroom was filthy. The good news...the food was better than average. The service can only be rated as okay since our waitress disappeared after our food was served. Based on the condition of restaurant, I can't help but wonder what's the condition of the kitchen. We will not return.

Things just haven't been the same since Frank left. Their food comes out cold and their service is absolutely horrible. My wife and I went there for her birthday dinner and waited 45 minutes for food while everyone around us was served. When we got a hold of the manager, they were actually the owner of the restaurant, so we thought things would be sorted out. Unfortunately the owner handled the situation very poorly and could've cared less about our business. I would recommend finding another Mexican food restaurant in town instead of giving your business to kachina.

Over the years this place has gone steadily downhill. It looks and feels like it needs a good cleaning. The food was mediocre during my last visit, and the staff seemed apathetic at best. Sorry, Kachina. Agave or La Fonda are both better choices.

This is one of the best places for good, old style Mexican food. The hot sauce is fantastic, chile rellano was very good, and the enchilada sauce had just the right amount of heat. The service was friendly, and the prices were good.

Dirty restaurant. My carne asada plate was ok but my family hated it there food. Service was poor. Prices not bad tho.

I come here every time my family comes up to flag to see me. We absolutely love the food and their salsa is great. Service is fast and they are nice people. Nothing beats Kachina. We will still comeback.

Best meal one night, absolute worst the next. It's a Dump. Off our list.

We ate here yesterday and really enjoyed the food. Their shrimp fajitas were AMAZING. I don't recall what everyone else got, but all five seemed to really enjoy their food, too. The environment isn't anything to write home about, but the food is good enough that I don't care. They still get five stars for the food.

I have driven past this place for years and I should have kept going. The decor is shabby. I ordered the Adobado dinner--it was hard as a rock. I thought I was cutting through bone. I am not kidding about how bad it was The guacamole was a smooth green substance. My stomach is still upset five hours later.

My party came in when it was really packed but the staff was polite and the food once we got it was delicious, I highly recommend the blue corn enchiladas!

I don't understand all of these one star reviews. I have been coming here for two to three years now and I am still satisfied by everything this place has to offer! Yes I will admit that they could use new flooring but that does not take away from the food experience for me. This place has phenomenal avocado salsa, I put that stuff on everything! Usually I do the combination plate and there are enough items for me because I am a vegetarian. This place actually cooks their enchiladas through unlike tacos Los altos. The portions are huge! I always have enough for dinner that night. Their Mexican food is one of the better places in town. Forget salsa brava their salsa tastes like tomato soup compared to here!

Give this place a skip. I agree with the other diners who gave it one star, in that the decor is shabby, the carpets and booths are filthy, and even the plates are worn. The service was indifferent and the food was barely passable. It's particularly sad that this restaurant is a family business with obvious pride in its history, but which hasn't maintained that pride in keeping up the quality.

I lived in Flagstaff for several years and went to Kachina a few times. I always found it to be average Mexican food. The salsa was always good and the rest of the food was decent at least but nothing special. My last almost visit has completely driven me away from ever returning again though. The owner (or maybe manager? but I think owner) was so wildly rude it took all my effort not to verbally destroy her. I pulled into the parking lot the back way (by Babbitt's) and parked. Truthfully I wasn't set on going to Kachina yet, I just needed a moment to scout out the area and come to a decision with my girlfriend. We got out of the car and took about 5 steps from it and I pointed out some surrounding restaurants to her and gave her a little history of the area. Before we could come to a decision a middle aged lady walks up in a way I'd describe as overtly aggressive and says "where are you going?" in a harsh tone. I respond "I don't know yet". She then goes full on B-mode and angrily says "well you can't park here, what do you think you're doing"..etc, to which I politely respond "oh sorry, we hadn't made up our minds yet but no problem I'll move". No big deal, I get it, she doesn't want non-patrons parking in her lot. I hadn't seen any signs saying Kachina parking only so I honestly didn't know. I started to turn to my car to move it since at this point I had been turned off to the idea of eating at Kachina restaurant because of the owner's aggressive manner. The matter was settled there as far as I was concerned but the lady would not relent. She continued "this is my lot! didn't you see the sign!? What do you think you're doing". Well no, I came in the backway and I didn't see any sign. Thanks for trying to be polite about it or maybe even giving me the benefit of the doubt. Some other male that was now flanking her echoed "yeah, she pays taxes for this lot". She continued complaining at me and I just said "sorry" and my girlfriend and I got in our car and drove away. TLDR: Owner/Manager was incredibly rude and continued to be rude even after I apologized for an honest harmless mistake. People like this don't deserve your business considering the surrounding restaurants all have terrific service and are run by decent humans. If you want Mexican food go to La Fonda's instead. Way better prices, drinks, and the owner isn't a jerk.

This is Mexican-American food made on a dare. I learned one thing from stopping through Flagstaff on the way to Colorado. The locals are wonderfully nice, and never ever go to your first find in the yellow pages. There needs to be an exchange of information, recipes and the like from neighboring states and country. Since when was a quesadilla made with American cheese? Maybe that's what makes it Mexican-American food. The green margaritas were sad, the chicken was out of a can and I feared for my daughter's life when we entered and left the bathroom in one fluid motion. I have seen hogans with better plumbing. Nice people though, so there's your one star.

I guess I ordered the wrong thing. As an appetizer, we had the cheese crisp with guacamole. What with the hype this place got in various tour guides, i was expecting homemade guac. What we got was something perhaps out of a squeegee bottle, but it was decent, and probably the best part of the meal. I was attracted to the straight-up bean and cheese burro, as I can never find a burro in NYC without rice in it. The burro had beans and cheese all right, but the beans were grey and the whole ordeal was quite tasteless. We had flan for dessert, and it was good enough, but of a strange, distinctly un-Flan like consistency. And it was garnished with WHIPPED CREAM! A big no-no. Our server was very attentive, asking us if we wanted dessert in the middle of our entree. The bus boy had this tattoo of a 15 in roman numerals on his hand, and I asked what it was before remembering that if he told me too much, he would have to kill me. Thankfully, he mumbled something and then said "I can't tell you any more." The ambiance was pretty much that of a bare-bones southwestern-themed diner, minus the charm.

I recognize most of yous reading my reviews are likely San Diegans...so this one may not help you in the slightest, but in my opinion there is nothing wrong with giving a nod to my dear old college town: I spent my 4-year college career in Flagstaff, AZ. I recently went for a weekend visit and got reacquainted with this little mountain town. A friend's 30th birthday brought me to Kachina on a Saturday night...and I found myself wondering why I recognized the name yet had no recollection of this restaurant. Now I believe mediocrity is the reason this place failed to leave a lasting impression. First and foremost, I must applaud our server who maintained her sanity amidst a bevy of rambunctious, 80's clad peeps. She kept the pitchers of Gatorade looking margarita flowing and had a smile on her face while maneuvering around and between the grouping of tables and wavering/wandering people (bet she was regretting serving up so many tequila shots by the end of the night). Second I pay tribute to the delicious and complimentary salsa served with chunks of real avocado which was spiced perfectly to my liking. The chips were freshly made, crispy and salty. In retrospect I would have been perfectly happy if I would've just gobbled chips and salsa all night. Even with copious amount of alcohol flowing through my body, my taste buds were not nearly numb enough to palate the bean, cheese & rice burrito I ordered. The beans (well, at least I think they were beans) were the color of cement and flavorless; actually cement likely has more flavor than this particular burrito. The cheese inside wasn't melted, which was no surprise considering...um, is there a word for colder than lukewarm but warmer than cool? If so that would describe the temp of my entree exactly. I hadn't had much, if anything, to eat that day so you would think even the grossest of gross would be easy enough to ingest...not so. I choked down just enough to counter the booziness I was feeling and spent the rest of the evening drinking more margarita in attempt to forget about those damn...what I truly hope were...beans in my belly. (okay I confess, I would've continued to drink regardless) So as not to end on a sour note, many of the people in my group (some drunk yet many sober) devoured and enjoyed their meals. I certainly don't discount the possibility that maybe a bean, rice, cheese burrito just isn't their specialty. Plus, the night was so fan-freakin-tastic that all burrito mishaps are forgiven!!! Many thanks to Kachina for the killer buzz and excellent hospitality!

I have had lotsa mexican food in So Cal (LA area) and this was a different type of mexican food but well worth the experience and I would go back for sure! I really liked the salsa, the navajo taco was a first and very very delicioso! The sopapillo bread was also new to me but quite yummy when warmed up with butter and honey!

Your experience at Kachina will vary, depending on what you order. Anything sold under the trademark of "beef" is actually eraser meat. I think they target erasers that are found sitting on sofas and eating Cheetos, and those are the ones they catch because it's easier than having to chase them. The shrimp tacos are better than any I've had in Flagstaff. They sell Pepsi, not Coke.

My chili relleno was disgusting. I went here with 10 other people, and nobody liked their food. To top it off, the ambience sucked. Don't go here!

This is basic home-style, family style Mexican food. The portions are LARGE. They serve very thin chips (hot) with a chunky blended salsa that includes hunks of avocado; they provide generous refills on the chips. We had the chile rellenos and blue corn enchiladas - both very large servings. The pitcher of margaritas was really good - a surprise! Light on that sweet and sour mix that they think makes a good margarita in SOCAL. These were muy bueno!

This place....where do I start? Oh man, I apologize ahead of time for the harshness in this review, but seriously, Kachina. I don't wanna waste too much time so I'll make a list. Food - I was served better Mexican food in Iraq. Cleanliness - this place needs new: floor, decorative theme, silverware, plates, cups, and aprons for all staff. The bathrooms were gross, my girl confirmed the female latrine was worse than the males. Staff - nice Prices - Id rather pay for Taco Bell. Avoid. Go to Salsa Brava! I just spent more effort on this review than whoever purchased this places' food stock and whoever cooked it, combined. Yucky. Haha.

Agree with Caitlin H. I love their avocado salsa. The people are very nice and helpful,. I generally get take out there. A four item combo with beans and rice. There to go order comes with a generous serving of chips and salsa as well as a few of their handmade tortillas. I love their frito tacos, they are pan fried.

This is my favorite restaurant in the world. Same staff over the years. Both salsas are fantastic. Viva La avocado chunks! I love every ground beef dish. Ask for the shredded chicken enchilada "old school style". Save room for the sopapilla or take it to go.

We love Mexican food! Wife and I stopped here yesterday and she had the machaca and eggs, I had the fish taco special. Both were terrible! When we sat down they brought the chips and pico de gallo plus a more picante sauce. The pico de gallo tasted like it had been made at least a week earlier and had no taste at all. The picante sauce tasted like they had mixed a bit of pace brand sauce with tomato sauce. Then came the food. It was extremely bland. The fish tacos had no recognizable fish in it, the rice tasted like rice with tomato sauce and the beans were dry and tasteless. My wife's machaca was dry, and also without any flavor. Also we have never seen machaca made separate from eggs that are scrambled with the meat. They served them separate. But I did like the coffee. After the meal, while paying the bill I was asked how I liked everything. I told them exactly what I am saying here and they acted extremely offended. The woman (owner???) Said that I was very rude and I told her she was impolite to expect me to pay the $23.00 for the meal. She said that they have been in business for fifty years and that they had "thousands of satisfied customers. I told her that they must all be Canadians who don't know what Mexican food is supposed to taste like. Before I would eat there again, I would search for a Taco Bell. This is probably the worse Mexican food we have ever found anywhere in North America!

We were in Flagstaff on vacation and we ate here twice. Why twice with a two star rating? Well, I love Mexican food, even ordinary mexican food. The first meal -- a Taco and Chile Rellano -- was pretty good. The Chile Rellano in particular was a stand out compared to everything else. The second meal was a Chimichanga, and it was possibly the most bland meal I've had at a mexican restaurant. The salsa and hot sauce here is pretty good though, so that kind of covered for it. Based on the food alone, I'd probably go with 3 stars, though in the South West, I would expect mexican food to be among the top notch options. What keeps it at 2 stars is the service. We were a party of 8, so the gratuity was added on automatically. Either because of that, or because the waitress is just surly anyway, our service was bad. We asked for extra chips and never got them; it took forever to get Ketchup for my son's burger; they wouldn't refill the salsa; etc.

I found the place friendly, comfortably "family" and pretty tasty. A good drop-in.

I went here with a Flagstaff local that had nothing but praise for this place, I do not understand why. The only thing I found remotely good was the guacamole. I had what they call carne adovada, it was not like any carne adovada I have ever had before or since. Two overcooked unseasoned pork chops covered in a red sauce, not cut up and marinated like adovada should be, with some meh rice and beans. In conclusion overpriced lousy food, will not go again.

I have been there twice. It is good solid mexican food. The place was clean with tasty salsa. The chimi was great as were the relanos.

The atmosphere in this place is cold and boring, plus the restaurant is dirty. The dishes were dirty and the bathroom was disgusting. To top it off, the prices are extremely high for pretty average Mexican food. I won't be going back.

I had come here with my mom as she knows the owners, the food and salsa was really good. my only thing i was not fond of was a couple of the shrimpies in my burrtio still had the shell on the tail. ehhh. i hate having to eat shrimp and pick stuff out of my mouth gross!! But other than that i cannot wait to go back and try more!

Food, service, and price were great. In a party of seven there were no complaints. If I lived on flagstaff I would visit regularly.

Sticking with 4 stars. Went to meet some friends for lunch, and even though we were a half hour early and informed the hostess, she gladly seated us. The server made sure we had drink refills and chips while we waited, in spite of us tying up his table for longer than usual during lunch. Still love the salsa and my green chile burro grilled. For a moment I panicked when I saw chips and salsa on the appetizer menu for $4.50. "Et tu Brute?" No worries, still free with meals.

This place is owned by the same family that owns La Fonda's, a restaurant everyone but me gushes over and offers up their unborn children for. To me, it's obvious that it's related to La Fonda's because it's too worrying to imagine more than one owner that conceives such bland recipes for a restaurant. Just like La Fonda's, the food is tasteless and boring and tends to lack even salt and pepper. Unlike La Fonda's the atmosphere is that of a nice, sit-down restaurant with a competent and friendly waitstaff (thus the better rating than I gave LF). It's ok. I probably finished my food but certainly can't tell you what I ordered now. Then again, if you like the food at La Fonda's but you don't feel like waiting an hour to eat in a dirty cafeteria-setting, you'd probably like Kachina.

I have been going to Kachina since I moved to Flagstaff in 1994. My visit this past Sunday was a BIG disappointment. We ordered our food to go and were told it would be about 15 minutes. Upon on arrival to pick it up, our 3 combination plates were stacked one on top of the other in a plastic grocery bag. All the other times we have ordered food to go, it was placed side by side in a box so as not to crush the food. When I complained to the young man at the register he only made excuses that they were out of boxes because they had been busy. I told him I would be complaining to management and his reply was OKAYYYYY. When I arrived home with our food it was cold and all the food had stuck to the foil it was covered with. To top it off, the food quality was disappointing to say the least. I don't know what happened to the great service and food Kachina use to serve? Maybe Sunday's are a bad day at Kachina?

I was in Flagstaff for vacation, and this was the closest to the motor inn I was at. I was very pleased with the service and the food. Excellent staff, fast and friendly. My first visit was during lunch, and I retired back to my motor inn. A few hours later, I went there again to meet up with some relatives. Had an entirely different staff for the dinner, but they were just as professional, and curious as the lunch staff. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a place in Flagstaff

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
