I've had consistently good food and friendly service here in the past, but my last visit was TERRIBLE. Not only was the service under-par, but the food was prepared incorrectly. I ordered my tofu extra spicy, and when it was presented undercooked (the tofu was still cold) and covered with a flavorless gravy, I asked to have it returned since I ordered it spicy. Instead of remaking the dish, the owner brought me a dish of garlic chili sauce and told me to make it as spicy as I wanted. As we all know, for tofu to be flavorful, it must be COOKED with flavor. Stirring the sauce around the watery, brown gravy did NOTHING except make me realize this place has no class and even less customer service. To make matters WORSE, the owner sent the waitress back to apologize, even though it was the OWNER who refused to remake the dish and only brought out the chili sauce. NO reduction on the bill, no offer to comp something in the future, not even an extra fortune cookie. I was a dedicated visitor to this establishment, but they lost me on tofu. SAD =(

In flag for a wedding and craving Chinese food. Very good, super friendly service, not too greasy! Good hot & sour soup! Reasonably priced.

Good portion, and the taste of the food did not have much to do with Hunan cuisine (hot and spicy);a family run diner with friendly services just right for a inexpensive meal.

I love it here! Rita is a wonderful lady and the food is delicious. This is NOT Hunan east and has nothing to do with them!!!! Crab cheese puffs are made with love here.

As we all know some dishes are hit or miss at Chinese restaurants, i guarantee if you get the orange chicken with extra sauce you will not be disappointed.

It has become something of a ritual for me and my sister to eat here Tuesday nights and we are never disappointed. It's a great value for the lunch and dinner specials and I would recommend the hot and sour soup, jasmine hot tea, and Mongolian chicken. The staff is also always accommodating and friendly!

There are two Hunan's in Flagstaff, this one is on Milton near Safeway, and the other one is on 4th street near Radio Shack and called Hunan East. They are not affiliated with each other. The legend goes that this is the original one, and that the 4th street one is an imposter. I am sure that there exists some record to make this straight, but in reality, I don't really care. All I care about is the quality of the food, and given my experiences at this place, I must say that it is not my favorite. First, I must say the portions are huge for what you pay for. I got a nice big helping of chicken and broccoli for about $7 and I thought the crab puffs were amazing. The portions were big enough for me to make another meal of, however the taste was just average. I thought that there was a definite lack of sauce, and needed to put soy sauce on it to make it better palatable. Also, the customer service was sorely lacking here and it took a while for them to get water and some of the people who worked here seemed aloof. It isn't a horrible place, but you can find better in town.

We picked up lunch specials after reading reviews on yelp. First of all, the lunch specials are small portions of food with a large portion of rice with 'wontons' but really fried sticks. Meat tasted like it had been sitting out for hours and Fried rice was so desert dry that it didn't even stick together. Later, my husband started to feel sick & laid down. Biggest waste of $20-we would've had a better meal at Panda Express.

Portions are huge, food is average. May eat here again, especially when on a budget.

It's not bad, but also not great. The soup and appetizer wontons and egg rolls were great! The main course was just so-so.

Hunan west is hands down the best chinese food in Flagstaff! $9.95 dinner super meal includes fried rice, entrée, egg roll, two crab wontons, and your choice of soup! The employees and owners are extremely friendly. Overall, awesome place with great food.

It was a only 5 minutes walk to here where I lived during college years. My roommate actually was a waitress here. The manager and staff there are really nice. They actually make conversations with you. Very talkative. It's a good thing. It's a small restaurant. I can't say it's clean...but presentable I guess. The food is pretty good. Love their soup. It is pricey though. Go for the other dishes..spicy dishes!..rather than orange chicken. The fried rice are very good. Apparently, I sorta heard they are somewhat related or competing with China Garden Restaurant. Interesting. Haha

I started coming here after the quality of another Chinese restaurant started getting worse & worse. I've never had a bad dish yet. Both the lunch special meals and the dinner special meals are priced good and filling. I could eat just plates and plates of the cream cheese stuffed wontons and egg flower soup and drink hot tea too.

The food was really good. I had the kung-pow beef. It had a nice pow! My wife had chicken fried rice and she really liked it. The 8.95 special is an excellent deal. Our reason for four stars is organization. We had to wait a bit to get seated while several workers looked at us. Our food (although amazing) came out several minutes apart. This is obviously an established local place and the owner greeted several people by name. We will be back for sure. The food greatly outweighed the negatives. Maybe takeout?

I wish I could have given this place 4 stars, but I cannot. Starting with the positives, the food is very good for the prices. For just about nine bucks you can get a soup, appetizer, and am entry with a side. The hot and sour soup was probably one of the better ones I've had. Now onto the negatives. The decorum of the place is a little out-of-date. It was fairly dark in the seating area and the booths were not at all comfortable. The service also needs to improve. They need to understand orders better and just appear more friendly. I could easily go twenty minutes without seeing my waiter or waitress if I didn't go out of my way to catch their attention. That being said, it is worth giving this place a try. But mainly it's because of their food, not customer service.

I give this place 0 stars!!! My family and I are stopping in flagstaff on our way to CA. I was craving Chinese food so asked the front desk what he recommends and he told us this place. I called in an order picked it up got back to our hotel room just to discover they didn't put in anything to eat with. Ok not that big of deal... We went to the gas station/mini mart and got spoons. We started eating our food and YUCK!!!! It is so incredibly gross!! We got the broccoli beef chicken fried rice. I don't know what people are thinking giving this place any stars! I will never eat here or recommend this place to anyone!

I don't suggest any Chinese come here which want to eat Chinese food. I never come here again. At the photo, we follow the waitress suggestion. But we already not eat something.

Ordered $8 dinner special Hot Sour Soup - orderable Non-Crab WonTon - orderable Tea - Jasmine, tasteworthy Egg Roll - Crispy and dense with cabbage and carrot Service - Excellent Mu-Shu Veggies - Average, small portion, but crispy, mostly cabbage Fried Rice - Gets a C in this University town. Hal said, "The Mu Shu sauce was a small amount, the taste not up to what I'm used to. My meal was very salty in general." Richard, "I give it a three." Me too. There is a Hunan East.

It was good....not great. I had had the Hunan chicken. The chicken wasn't high quality and pretty dry. The crab rangoon was good though.

You sit here! Exclaims Rita, the owner. I love this place, every time I make it up to the pines I want to razz Rita a little. Get the super meal for lunch, awesome way to get full and stuff. I Love this place.

Our continuing quest to find really good Chinese food in Flagstaff continues. And, unfortunately I think we're still looking. Let's start with some good - the service is exceptionally friendly and professional. Lovely folks. The service gets them the third star. The restaurant itself is clean and pleasant, parking is easy. The food was hit or miss, I'm afraid. The orange chicken was different from the way most places prepare it - it wasn't breaded - and actually pretty tasty. The egg rolls were o.k., a little smaller than we're used to. The pork fried rice was pretty bland though, needed a lot of soy sauce to save it. Will we be back? Maybe. Still looking for really good Chinese food in Flagstaff.

This place is hit or miss. We have ordered a variety of dishes on the menu and none were that great ,but my husband and I have figured out what works for us. War Won ton Soup, Pot stickers (are huge and handmade unique for Flagstaff) and BBQ pork. The also provide good customer service. We are from Boston and SF and this place does not compare to the Chinese food in either of those cities, that being said we feel this is the best Flagstaff has to offer and wouldn't tell someone not to go there we have just experienced so much better.

I love Hunan West. We moved to Flagstaff when I was 3 years old and remember going there with my mom when I was about 5 and went there often until I moved. When ever I come back to visit I always have to stop here. The crab cheese wontons are to die for and the hot and sour soup is awesome. My Favorite meal there is in the Hunan Special section of the dinner menu and is call Chin Pi Beef. It is twice cooked beef and I have had a hard time finding an equal in Phoenix.

Went there before a river trip with three friends and we all felt it was very average. The meal deal was the way to go and the crab Rangoon was five stars though.

Flagstaff is not a great town for Chinese food, but if you are in the mood for it, Hunan West is your best bet. The atmosphere is casual and cozy, with many tables crammed into a relatively small, squarish restaurant. The service is great and the food always comes very fast. The prices are absolutely unbeatable. For lunch, you can get a full meal for under $5. For dinner you can get a combo meal for under $8 which includes soup, an appetizer a full entree, and a soda!!! I recommend the General Tsao's chicken (spicy) or the Sesame Chicken (very sweet). The food tastes much fresher, more flavorful and higher quality than the Chinese buffets around town, although this is far from a fancy restaurant.

I give 3 stars for food, and one more for service. I came with my family, who could all speak Cantonese. That earned us extra points with the owners. Both came by and chatted with us about the food, sightseeing, etc. They were also really courteous about keeping our teapot filled and making sure the food was tasty. However, I do see how they can appear a little rude when they're not speaking Cantonese/Mandarin. As for the food, I've eaten a lot of Chinese food when in CA and Asia. The food here isn't bad, but it's not great either. We had tofu (mediocre. We asked for it to be nonspicy, but it would've tasted better if it was spicy), mixed veggies (a bit too saucy), sesame chicken (breaded too thickly. The sauce was tasty though) and Mongolian beef (WINNER). The Mongolian Beef is a must. The meat is tender and beautifully seasoned. Overall, I would come back. I felt very welcomed by the owners and I really want to eat their Mongolian Beef again!

Never going there again. My friend had ordered the egg foo young, and two of my friends tried it, one ran to the bathroom and threw up. Then when we went to talk to the manager about the food, she responded in a rude and condescending manner.

Good place for Chinese food ESP for flag. Good size portions and their soups and egg rolls actually have flavor. Their dinner specials are perfect to share between two. Wish they delivered but take out is fine too.

This place is great for going for a fast meal of decent food at reasonable prices. I would probably have given it 2 stars simply for its food, but our server gets a whole star all to herself! The soups were a bit salty (probably from simmering all day), and the rice was a bit old (we went in around 7:30-8:00). Portions are decent--our friends got the vegetarian chow mein and were very full. Of course, they are both under 5'3 and both less than 110 lbs! So if you aren't in that size range, order more food! My bf and I ordered the $8 special--I was stuffed, he was stuffed after he ate everyone else's appetizers. He's also 6'2 and 200lbs, so if you're in that size range, the $8 may not be enough for you! As for me, I'm 5'7 and not 110 lbs. If you fit in that size range, then the $8 will fit for you!

Good Chinese at a good price. Got all my roommates hooked. Whenever we crave Chinese, it's "who wants Hunan?" The owner is always there and they are very hard workers. The crowd is as casual as it gets, but the atmosphere is comfortable and you can fill your belly for about $10 with their special value menu, which is a great deal!

Been coming here for years - delicious and great value. The owner is always there and dedicated. Pros: - Super Meal: soup, wonton, eggroll, entree and drink for $8.95 - Delicious soup and eggroll Cons: - Sometimes the chicken chow mein is a little too salty. This is the place I measure other Chinese restaurants against. I will keep coming here when I'm in the area!

Best chinese food in flagstaff. My husband and I normally go to china garden because they deliver but thought we would give it a try. At first we were a little iffy because it was so small but we are so glad we tried it. what we got Won ton soup- well flavored broth which is a rarity and homemade dumplings that were so yummy fried dumplings- were great, and about the size of my palm. You could tell they were made from scratch even the wrappers beef with green onion and bamboo shoots- again great chow mein with shrimp- liked that the shrimp were sautéed not just boiled sesame chicken- was yummy but i'd only give it three stars. My husband liked the crunchy outside coating. Our waitress was very nice, the portions were nice sized. We had leftovers of everything. The owner is on site and rang us up, she was very friendly and told me that she had been there for 18 years.

I only go to 2 Chinese food places in Flagstaff, Hunan West, and Hunan East. Hunan West is much better as far as food goes, but is out of the way for me, as i live in Williams and normally am downtown. It is worth a try if you haven't tried it, the lunch specials are good and well priced. I love the Mongolian beef, and wanton soup, but other food is good there also.

I love this place. Best chicken fried rice. I have been eating here for more than 10 years and its always very good. Whenever I'm in Flagstaff it's either Hunan West or China Barn (China Garden). I have not yet found a place in phoenix as good as this one.

So I understand that this might be the best Chinese food in Flagstaff. So you might want to avoid Chinese food all together! The price wasn't too bad but the food was close to inedible. We ordered 4 different dishes and I tried them all. Not even one was decent. Don't waste your money on this place.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
